Old Town Ampenan - Mataram Lombok

Is Mataram Lombok Worth Visiting?

Mataram Lombok is the provincial capital. However, even as a capital city, there are still several tourist destinations here. There’s a balance between cultural and modern tourism. In short, you don't have to worry about things to do in Mataram. Here is a short overview of what to do when you visit Mataram Lombok.

Mataram Lombok as a cultural highlight

As the biggest city on the island, Mataram Lombok also has a long history. This means that there are plenty of old and new cultural activities for you to discover. We will cover the most interesting ones in this Mataram travel guide.

Parks and cultural heritage

There are several parks as well as cultural attractions in Mataram Lombok, for instance, Narmada Park and Mayura Park. Both are historical relics of the Balinese Kingdom as part of  Lombok’s history . Mayura Park is the King's resting garden as well as part of the king's palace. So the location is really in downtown Mataram.

Narmada park is 9 km from it. This heritage site is a total area of 10 hectares. It was made as a miniature of Mount Rinjani with several ponds and sacred buildings in it. Meanwhile, Mayura Park is smaller, with an iconic building in the form of a bale (formerly a meeting place and royal court) in the middle of a beautiful pond.

State Museum of West Nusa Tenggara

Due to its extensive history, you will find various relics in the  State Museum of West Nusa Tenggara (Museum Nusa Tenggara Barat) in Mataram Lombok. Historical relics from royal to colonial era are here. It houses a collection of more than 7,000 pieces and covers history, biology, geology, archaeology, culture, ethnography, numismatics, heraldry, philology, and ceramics.

As the state museum, it is the most complete one in the NTB region. In addition to historical objects, they also store objects that people believe as magical items or that possess magical powers.

Islamic Center Mosque

Lombok is known as the island of a thousand mosques. Mataram Lombok features the mother of them all, the Islamic Center. In addition to praying for the Muslims, this immense mosque is also open to tourists, including non-Muslim foreigners.

The architecture and style of the mosque from the outside and inside takes inspiration from the local culture. You can also scale the minaret of the largest mosque on the island with the elevator. Here, you will see the beauty of the city from a height of 99 meters.

Historic centre of Mataram Lombok

Old Town Ampenan is called the old city, because in this area the majority of the buildings still maintain the architecture of the Dutch colonial era. In the 18th century, this area was the capital of the government before being moved to new Mataram.

It is a small area not far from  Senggigi , that you can explore it by foot. However, we recommend travelling with a ‘cidomo’, a typical Lombok horse cart, for the full ancient experience. Most of the buildings were neither rebuilt nor repainted. In this area there are many  Lombok coffee shops that use old buildings.

Natural tourism in Mataram

Next, we move on to the nature of Mataram. It might surprise you, but the city stretches until the sea. Therefore, Old Town Ampenan borders with the beach, while on the other side of the city, you will find hills.

Mataram Beach

Mataram Lombok reaches the coastline in the west. So, while having a holiday in Mataram you can still visit beaches. There are two that you must include in your itinerary when you visit Mataram.

First there is Ampenan Beach. This is not as much a beach as it has a concrete sidewalk up to the water. It used to be a trading centre during colonial times. The beach is famous for its beautiful sunset. There are many local small food stalls to try.

Loang Baloq Beach has an artificial lake in the shape of Lombok island. This beach has a myth, where if you make a wish and tie something to a banyan tree root there, your wish will come true. Similar to the love locks of Paris. The banyan is in an ancient tomb complex of ancient religious leaders.

Mataram also has hills. Gunung Batu Idung can be translated as ‘Nose Hill’. From a distance, the rock at the top is in the shape of a nose. While visiting, you will see small shop facilities, gazebos, toilets and stairs to the top.

It’s a popular place during sunrise and sunset. This is because you get an amazing view of Mataram city. All the way up to where the city meets the sea.

Shopping malls of Mataram Lombok

Mataram Lombok has several large malls. These are perfect if you want to go shopping, or for a relaxing day when you travel to Mataram with family. In these shopping centres you can find international retail brands, as well as indoor playgrounds. These are the malls you can visit:

  • Lombok Epicentrum Mall
  • Mataram Mall
  • Transmart Mataram

Conclusion - Is Mataram Worth Visiting?

Apart from the places above, Mataram Lombok also has several other options such as artificial city parks, water parks and monuments. It is also home to large hospitals, large shops, supermarkets and souvenir shops.

You don't even need to worry about what to eat in Mataram, because there are many choices of food ranging from local to international. In short, Mataram is surely an interesting place to visit. Especially if you are looking to explore the culture of Lombok during your trip.

Even so, don't forget to visit other parts of Lombok. There are still  many destinations to explore . It’s best to look for a place to stay like Amazing Lombok Resort. You can use it as your hub to explore the entire island.

Now that you know where you’re going to stay, you need to figure out how to get to Lombok. When you’re there, you’ll want to know how you’re going to get around.

The most popular way to get to Lombok is by public ferry from Bali. We highly recommend this as it’s an activity all on its own!

When it comes to getting around Lombok, we recommend traveling by ojek , these motorbike taxis are cheap and are perfect for individual travelers. If you’re traveling with a group, hiring motorbikes is not a bad idea either, especially if you’re going to be doing a lot of traveling around the island.

Lombok itinerary

Buses are generally the easiest and cheapest way to get from the airport to your hotel, and they have plenty of space for your luggage.

Taking a bemo is another great way to travel. These are vans with an open back and bench seats along either side. This is how locals travel and is a lot cheaper than many other forms of transport.

You can also hire a car, or just hire a driver, but of course, these are a lot more expensive and in many cases, unnecessary.

Now that you have a better idea of how you’re going to get around the island, you can start looking for the best things to do in Lombok. Let us be your Lombok guide and show you all the activities you simply must add to your Lombok trip itinerary.

Tanjung Aan | Kuta Lombok | Semeti Beach | Selong Belanak Beach

If you’re only spending one day in Lombok, then you need to cram that day full of the very best activities the island has to offer. You’ll spend your first day basking in the sun and exploring many of the best beaches in Lombok. Here are a few epic activities you should be adding to your Lombok itinerary!

Day 1 / Stop 1 – Stroll Along Tanjung Aan

  • Why it’s awesome: Tanjung Aan is one of the longest beaches in Lombok and is eerily similar looking to that of the Caribbean!
  • Cost: Free!
  • Food nearby: Warung Turtle Resto Cafe is just a few minutes walk from Tanjung Aan beach and serves lovely Indonesian food. This beachside cafe has seating right in the sand, making for the perfect island paradise eating spot! Be sure to try one of their seafood dishes, as they’re truly delicious! Enjoy delectable food, while sipping on a thick creamy milkshake, or an ice cold beer. There is no better way to spend the late morning!

While zooming around Kuta on your scooter, be sure to stop at its most popular beach! It stretches for kilometers along the coastline and you might not see another soul! Because Lombok is less crowded than most popular destinations in Bali , you’ll find it a lot more empty, giving you the space to roam freely!

Tanjung Aan, Lombok

Gorgeous turquoise waters will stretch out in front of you, providing you with magnificent views! While strolling the beach, be sure to dip your toes in the deliciously warm waters!

After walking the entire length of the beach, be sure to climb one of the hills on either side. When you get to the top, you’ll be able to enjoy spectacular views of the bay! Be sure to take your camera along for this activity, as you’ll want to capture the beauty of this area and remember it forever!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – Explore Kuta Lombok

  • Why it’s awesome: Kuta Lombok is a much smaller, and less popular version of the Kuta in Bali.
  • Food nearby: Tomato Cafe is a quaint breakfast joint in the heart of Kuta Lombok. You’ll find tasty Asian cuisine and plenty of vegan and vegetarian options! If you can stomach pizza in the morning, we can highly recommend their breakfast pizza. However, if you’re not up for something so cheesy in the early hours, there are a great deal of other healthier breakfast options.

Kuta is a small village in Lombok with so many hidden gems in its grasp. The best way to explore this wonderful area is to hire a scooter for the day. You can zoom along the coastal road, stopping off at a myriad of different roadside stalls along the way.

Riding a scooter can be a great and inexpensive way of traveling around Lombok. Although you don’t need a license to rent a scooter, most travel insurance companies will ask for a valid motorbike license to be able to claim if you crash! Always make sure that you have travel insurance with a motorcycle-riding coverage.

The area is known for its gorgeous beaches and luscious vegetation, so if you’re a nature lover, you’ll adore this activity!

I have stayed a MANY of the best villas in Kuta Lombok during my multiple visits. My favorites always show off the traditional hospitality of the locals. Villas have high-end service, combining comfort and convenience, along with a promise of fun activities and entertainment. I highly recommend them.

Kuta Lombok

Stop off at various spots that interest you and explore a little further on foot. Top hostels in Lombok have staff with the best recommendations.

Chat with the locals; this is often the best way to get to know an area! Don’t forget to ask for advice about where you can find the most interesting and rare things to do in Lombok.

Insider Tip: Be careful when driving your scooter along the roads. It’s a quiet area, so you won’t encounter traffic, but going slowly is still a safer option, as some of the roads are not of great quality.

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Explore Semeti Beach

  • Why it’s awesome: This beach is a little different from the other ones you’ll find around Lombok.
  • Food nearby: Nulle Part Ailleurs is a wonderful restaurant with an island feel. The food is absolutely delicious and the seafood is fresh! Try their incredible chicken teriyaki or their deliciously cheesy pizzas! Neither the food nor the view could disappoint! They also serve great takeaway meals if you’re ready to get back to your hotel.

Semeti Beach is completely different to the other beaches in Lombok ! Instead of white sandy beaches, it has interesting volcanic rock formations that form small rock pools and blowholes.

As you can imagine, the experience you have on this beach is far different from the others. Instead of basking in the sun, you can spend your time exploring the craggy rocks and perhaps taking a dip in one of the many rock pools!

Semeti Beach, Lombok

If you like hopping, climbing, and exploring, this is a great excursion for you! You’ll also get the chance to see a different side to Lombok marine life in the rock pools.

Despite the dramatic scenery, this beach is often not visited by tourists to Lombok. So you’ll find it very quiet, which gives you the perfect chance to explore and investigate as you please!

Day 1 /Stop 4 – Sunbathe at Selong Belanak Beach

  • Why it’s awesome: Selong Belanak Beach is located in South Lombok and never gets overcrowded!
  • Food nearby: Mawi Surf Cafe is one of the many street stalls you’ll find along the road. They serve delicious street food at a great price, and also offer surfboard rental . Be sure to try one of their fresh coconuts, and sip it from the comfort of the sandy beach!

Spend the afternoon basking in the sun at this delightful beach! It’s definitely one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, making it a must-visit during your stay in Lombok.

Many of the beaches in Bali (the neighboring island) are crowded, and there is plenty of litter lying around. You won’t find this to be your experience at Selong Belanak Beach! This beach is a long strip of clean and wonderfully golden sand, perfect for a sunbathing excursion.

Selong Belanak Beach

You’ll also find stalls on the side of the road, just off the beach. Here you can enjoy lovely street food, mainly noodle and rice dishes, as well as deliciously fresh coconuts!

You can rent a surfboard or a sponge board at Selong Belanak, however, the waves aren’t great for experienced surfers. The waves are perfect for beginners, giving them a gentle nudge in the right direction. If you happen to be an experienced surfer, it’s best to save that watersport for another beach.

Senggigi | Sukarara Village | Beleq Village | Tanjung Poki

If you’re wondering what to do in Lombok for 2 days, then you’re going to need a few extra activities to add to your 2-day itinerary in Lombok. On your second day, you’ll be spending time exploring the local villages and getting to know the culture and traditions of the Sasak people . Here are a few extra activities you won’t want to miss out on!

Day 2 / Stop 1 – Sunbathe on Senggigi

  • Why it’s awesome: This part of Lombok, reminds us of a much more peaceful time, before all the tourists came to town.
  • Food nearby: Basilico Authentic Italian Restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy an indulgent mid-morning brunch. They offer an all-inclusive buffet option, or you can order something special off the menu. If you like to dine with an incredible view, this is the perfect place for you.

Of course, basking in the sun is something you should experience every day during your time in Lombok. After all, you are on holiday, it’s your duty to return home with a tan that’ll make the closest of friends jealous!

At Senggigi, you can relax and enjoy the beach that wraps around the coastline! It’s not commercial at all, so you won’t find amenities or street side stalls, but you can enjoy your own company on this gorgeous beach.

Sunbathe on Senggigi, Lombok

The beach gives way to luscious vegetation and palm trees that sway in the wind. We couldn’t think of a better way to spend the last of the morning!

Be sure to take your camera with you , as you’ll struggle to find a more picturesque view if you tried! Turquoise waters and a white sandy beach that gives way to luscious vegetation and a craggy mountain slope!

Day 2 / Stop 2 – Pay a Visit to Sukarara Village

  • Why it’s awesome: The village lies in a completely overlooked portion of the island and holds hidden secrets many tourists will never find out!
  • Food nearby: Keker Restaurant is a colorful beach boma, that serves absolutely delicious Indonesian cuisine. The quality of every dish is incredible, so you won’t want to miss out on this delight for the taste buds. If you’re a fan of fresh seafood, this is a must-visit during your time in Lombok! The food portions are large, the service is great, and the prices are cheap! The view is also spectacular, there are not many places in the world that you can sit in the jungle eating fresh seafood, it really is a treat!

Many tourists don’t know that Lombok has a thriving textile industry, and Sukarara Village is at the forefront of this industry. In many of the touristy areas you won’t even see a glimpse of this industry, so coming to Sukarara allows you to see Lombok authentically!

They make two main types of woven cloth, Tenun Ikat which is made mainly by the men, and Tenun Songket , which is made by the women. Tenun Songket is inlaid with golden and silver threads. These beautiful pieces of cloth are made by hand and should be absolutely treasured!

Pay a Visit to Sukarara Village, Lombok

Be sure to buy one while you’re in Sukarara, or take a traditional weaving workshop, where you’ll learn exactly how the garments are made.

After taking a class, you’ll realize just how difficult this skill is to learn, and appreciate their work so much more!

Day 2 / Stop 3 – Visit Beleq Village

  • Why it’s awesome: If you’re wanting to learn about traditional Sasak culture, you must add this activity to your Lombok itinerary.
  • Food nearby: Pondok Guru Bakti Senaru Cottage and Restaurant is a beautiful restaurant that also offers accommodation. Both are incredible, but if you’re coming for a bite to eat, you’re in for a genuine treat! They have wonderful outdoor seating that provides you with an amazing view of the jungle, and they serve great Indonesian food! Your palate will be nothing less than satisfied by the time you leave!

Beleq is one of Lombok’s many indigenous villages and dates all the way back to the 14th-century. The village has a rich cultural history, as well as plenty of Sasak houses and a village hall. The area is fascinating to explore and makes for a great excursion.

You’ll learn so much on your trip to Beleq Village! You’ll see the ancient traditions of the Sasak people and learn about their history.

Beleq Village, Lombok

The village hasn’t changed much over the years, so it still holds its authentic Sasak ways. There are plenty of tours you can take of the village if you want to learn a bit more, or you can speak to a local. Many of them speak English and would be more than happy to educate you about their way of life.

Visiting Beleq Village is a truly authentic experience that leaves you humbled and in awe. Be sure not to miss out on this truly unique experience!

Day 2 / Stop 4 – See Tanjung Poki

  • Why it’s awesome: Seeing this incredible sight is such a humbling experience! The perfect way to end off your second day in Lombok.
  • Food nearby: Lesehan Terapung Sadewa is a very unique restaurant in the ocean. Yes, I said it, in the ocean. It’s a floating seafood restaurant that is absolutely spectacular. The view could not get better and to be quite honest, neither could the seafood. This is by far the best seafood restaurant in Lombok, and that’s really saying something! For your second night in Lombok, you really need to celebrate by spending the evening at this fantastic restaurant!

The beautiful scenery is not all that Tanjung Poki has to offer. Due to a volcano eruption many years ago, incredible rock formations have formed in this area.

The rough sea has now eroded areas of the rocks away, creating giant blowholes and incredible caves as well as rock pools.

To see how the water interacts with the interesting rock formations is so interesting. You could watch the water for hours! Be sure to take your camera along for this trip, as you’ll want to record the dramatic eruptions of water that take place due to the blowholes in the rocks.

Insider Tip: The best time to visit Tanjung Poki is when it’s high tide. The waves crash against the rocks and water erupts out of the blowhole with brute force! It’s a spectacular sight.

Beachfront Bungalow Pantai Medas

Beachfront Bungalow Pantai Medas

The Beachfront Bungalow Pantain Medas is located on the edge of a farm overlooking the beach.

This tour includes a hotel pick-up, making your life a little easier! After being picked up from your hotel, you’ll travel by car to Gerung City. This is the capital of Lombok and the epicenter of all activity on the island.

You’ll cycle through the city , exploring the government buildings and seeing the many monuments throughout the city, before passing the mayor’s office.

From there, you’ll head out of the city and onto the open road. Your second stop-off will be at the village of Kuripan, where you’ll see the local farmers at work. You’ll see the local people making bricks from clay, and you’ll learn about the entire brick making process.

City and Countryside Biking Tour

You’ll then head out on a 20-minute ride through the rice fields and into a mountainous area, where you can enjoy incredible views of the rice paddies below. You’ll cycle through Hindu villages, where two different tribes live in harmony with one another. You’ll get the chance to get off your bike and chat with the locals before continuing on your tour.

You’ll then come to the main road, where you’ll cross a 100-meter high ancient hanging bridge. It was built during the Dutch colonial period in Lombok. You’ll then cycle through a hand-weaving village, where you’ll see the women creating sarongs with traditional tools.

You’ll also take part in a boat ride across the river, to explore an ancient Hindu Temple, before cycling back to your pick-up spot to head home.

Lombok is relatively safe, however, there are a few dangers you should watch out for during your 2 days in Lombok.

It is advised not to buy alcohol on the island. In Indonesia, alcohol is often diluted with methanol and can be very dangerous! There have been a few deaths caused by this dilution over the past few years! If you want to drink, make sure you buy a sealed bottle and open it yourself. Buying drinks and cocktails at bars in excess is not advised!

There are very strong currents that run between the islands, making it very dangerous to try and swim from one island to another. Although the shallow turquoise waters may be tempting, it is better to stay close to the beach than get washed away!

Drugs are very freely available on the island, due to the lack of police. However, there are VERY strict drug laws in Indonesia, and if you’re found with drugs, you may face the death penalty.

Be aware that petty crime does take place on Lombok island, so keep your belongings safe by making sure your hotel room is locked and the windows shut. It’s also a good idea to carry your most valuable belongings on your person, where you can see or feel them at all times.

Indonesia is a very large country with a very wide territory with thousands of islands on both sides of the equator. Although often classed as part of Southeast Asia, many of the islands are far from the main backpacker routes in Southeast Asia and much of Indonesia is closer to Australia than Thailand, Cambodia or Laos. If you all want to travel to Indonesia, we also have very exciting tourist information, you can see it via the website which we will share here abkhaziya . net

When i was in parts of bali and particularly over toward lombok in gili trawangan, gili air and gili meno, i was constantly woken really early in the morning by the external speakers blasting the prayer. this seemed odd to me given prayer is normally a quiet personal matter. i used to look for concrete buildings distant from noisy places to stay in rather than thatched huts as they are more sound proof and more likely to have air conditioning. i would suggest a rating on each accommodation place indicating how close it is to ferry terminals, nightclubs, temples and main roads for those of us who are light sleepers. recent oppressive laws passed by the blinkered and foolish government of indo (given 80% of their income comes from tourism) do not favour tourism, rather they favour opportunities to extort bribes for not enforcing these ridiculous laws. One can rate the corruption of a police force anywhere by the ratio of how much time they spend looking for or investigating crime and dealing properly with it vs how much time they spend extorting bribes for not doing so. I have lived in places where the latter is all they ever do and they have zero interest in the former! new laws: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-12-06/indonesia-bans-cohabitation-between-unmarried-couples/101739410 i recommend avoiding all the muslim areas of indonesia for both these reasons unless you can get well away from busy areas with temples and police. .

Things to See and Do Around Mataram, Lombok

Mataram City

travel mataram lombok

Mataram is the capital city of Lombok. The city is made up of four towns – Ampenan, Mataram, Cakranegara and Sweta which have grown to the point where it’s difficult to tell where one stops and the other starts but each has it’s own unique personality and characteristics. Ampenan is the historic port town once ruled by the Dutch and as well as featuring many buildings from the colonial era, is home to the State Museum of West Nusa Tenggara, which gives a good overview of Lombok culture. Cakranegara is where locals come to shop for everything from electrical goods and homewares to to fashion and food. It is also home to Lombok’s largest temple, Pura Meru. Sweta, is the main transport hub for the whole island and a great place to find locally made handicrafts – the Sweta market is considered one of the best and most authentic. Mataram City is the administrative centre for Nusa Tenggara Barat, a province that covers Lombok, Sumbawa and the surrounding islands.

pura lingsar

As a centre of government administration, Mataram has many large, impressive public buildings and substantial houses. The main square or “alun-alun” is a popular meeting place and is used for art exhibitions, theatre, dance, and wayang kulit (puppet theatre) performances. In other parts of Mataram, there are a variety of old-style markets and neighborhoods featuring traditional handicrafts such as pottery, basket-weaving and “songket”, hand made sarongs threaded with gold and silver.

Although most tourists to Lombok head straight to the island’s many beautiful beach locations, Mataram nevertheless has a number of interesting and historic attractions which are outlined in the other sections of this blog and is also home to some of the tastiest food you will try in Indonesia. Moreover, it offers a unique insight into an Indonesian city quite unfazed by the march of progress and the rush to overdevelop natural assets and is a great base from which to explore the island and discover its many and varied attractions.

The Old Town, Ampenan

travel mataram lombok

Ampenan is the oldest city in Lombok and as well as being an important port for the spice trade during the period of Dutch rule in the 19th and early 20th century, Ampenan has been a central meeting point for fishermen and traders from all over Indonesia since the early 14th century. Although all port activities were shifted to nearby Lembar in the 1970’s, Ampenan is still a bustling town with it’s mix of colonial architecture and cultures from Indonesia, the Middle East and China still living and trading here, offering a wide variety of shopping food and nightlife.

The word Ampenan comes from the word “Amben” which means “Heaven”. Today, the population of Ampenan city consists of various ethnic communities, such as Chinese, Arabs, Malays and Bugis. On one side of the main street, Yos Sudarso are a number shops which belong to local Chinese traders. On the other side, is a row of shops belonging to the Arab community who sell goods from the Middle East. As you move from street to street you will see evidence of the different communities reflected in what is offered for sale in the shops and especially in the food sold in the restaurants and cafes.

As well as the many Dutch Colonial buildings, and lively trader community, the Museum of West Nusa Tenggara gives a great overview of indigenous Sasak culture and the history of Lombok. Ampenan also has a beach well known for it’s beautiful sunsets. On any given night people flock to the foreshore to eat roasted corn or to sit at one of the many foreshore cafes and take in the gorgeous panorama of sun setting over the sea. One can also see the ruins of an old pier which was built during the Dutch around 1948 -1950. The pier is presently a popular fishing location.

The State Museum of West Nusa Tenggara

travel mataram lombok

The State Museum of West Nusa Tenggara holds a collection of some 7,000 artifacts and offers a comprehensive overview of Lombok History and traditional Sasak Culture.

The collection includes significant works of art as well as traditional crafts such as pottery and basket weaving, ceremonial costumes, weapons and archeological remains.

The Museum is located in Ampenan and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 8am til 3pm. It is open from 8am til 11am Friday to accomodate Friday prayers.

Sweta Market

red garlic in sweta market

The Sweta Market is the largest market in Lombok, offering tourists and locals a lively, traditional market atmosphere with a wide range of genuine, hand crafted items as well as fresh produce including locally grown herbs and spices.

And best of all, as it is a “real” market, ie not geared solely to tourists, prices are unbelievably cheap, especially when compared to similar markets in the tourist areas of Bali. Indeed, many Balinese entrepreneurs buy here to take back and sell at marked up prices.

Locally made pottery, wicker baskets and jewellery are in plentiful supply here as well as songket, traditional hand-woven cloth threaded with gold and silver. The artisans and craftspeople who make these items, are, in many cases women, who come from villages that have been specialising in a specific craft for generations, if not centuries, so you can be assured that you are buying items of real quality.

Many traders will even help with overseas delivery at very reasonable prices.

The Sweta Market is located next to the bus terminal, about 15 minutes drive from Mataram City and is close to the historic town of Narmada. The market is open most days.

Narmada Water Park

https://discoveryourindonesia.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Narmada-Water-Park.jpg

Constructed by King Anak Agung Gede Ngurah Karang Asem in 1727, Taman Narmada is one of the oldest historical sites in Lombok. It is a replica of Mount Rinjani’s summit and the crater lake which, to this day, is still an active volcano. Apparently, as the king became older, he could not regularly perform his pilgrimage to the summit of this 3,726 metre mountain, (the second highest peak in Indonesia, it is a challenge to modern day mountain climbers) so he built Taman Narmada, about 11 kilometres away to the east of Mataram. Inside the park, he constructed the Segara Anakan to represent the mountain and a pool to represent the lake. It is said that the king spent plenty of time in Narmada’s beautiful garden to relax and to worship the Hindu god, Lord Shiva. There is a natural spring by the pool that Hindis believe to be the Fountain of Youth and the site attracts loyal followers throughout the year.

Pura Lingsar

Pura Lingsar is located 8km east of Mataram in the village of Lingsar.

Pura Meru, Pura Terbesar Di Pulau Lombok | Info Lengkap Tempat Wisata di Pulau Lombok Indonesia

Pura Meru is the largest and most popular Hindu temple on Lombok. Built in 1720, the inner court has 33 small shrines to represent each of the 33 villages that came together to build the temple and three thatched, teak-wood  meru  multi-tiered shrines dedicated to the Hindu gods Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The central  meru,  with 11 tiers, is Shiva’s house; the  meru  to the north, with nine tiers, is Vishnu’s; and the nine-tiered  meru  to the south is Brahma’s.  The three meru are also said to represent the three volcanoes considered sacred by Indonesian Hindu’s; Mt Rinjani (Lombok), Mt Agung (Bali) and Mt Bromo (Java).

Pura Meru is located on Jalan Selaparang, 2km from the city centre .

Pura Batu Bolong

Pura Batu Bolong is the oldest Hindu Temple in Lombok and predates Balinese occupation on the island by about 200 years.

It was built in 1533 by the East Javanese rishi (wise man) Dang Hyang Dwijendra.

Dwijendra was a prominent religious figure in his time and founder of Shaivite Hinduism which is the primary form of Hinduism practiced in Bali to this day.

Pura Batu Bolong is located 12km from Mataram near the beach town of Senggigi. It is built on a rocky coastal outcrop and enjoys stunning sunsets and views back to Mt Agung on Bali.

Pusuk Monkey Forest

travel mataram lombok

Pusuk Monkey Forest is situated 30 minutes from Mataram in lush tropical forest between West and North Lombok. The area is a protected natural reserve and the habitat of the native macaque. These small, grey monkeys have become quite tame and accustomed to people. They can be seen along much of the roadside and can be hand fed at the summit, which provides views back to the west coast. If you forget to take your own bag of nuts you can buy some at the summit.

15 Things You Should See on Lombok

Dieser Artikel ist auch verfügbar auf: Deutsch

Lombok: 15 fascinating sights you shouldn’t miss

How to get to lombok, accommodation in lombok – our hotel tips, 1. the gili islands, 2. mount rinjani, 3. senggigi, 4. from senggigi to pemenang, 5. pusuk monkey forest, 7. mawun beach, 8. selong belanak and viewpoint, 9. tanjung aan, 10. pink beach, 11. mosques and hindu temples, 12. waterfalls, 13. sasak culture, 14. traditional markets, 15. mataram, ampenan and cakranegara, lombok: tours and tickets.

Lombok offers many empty and often isolated dream beaches, friendly and interesting people, tasty food and fantastic nature. This year, after a stay of more than two months, Lombok and the Gili islands became my personal favorites – at least so far.

In this article you will find a few must-sees on Lombok.

To get to Lombok there are only two options, the airplane and the boat. Flights operate from many cities in Indonesia to Lombok. But the international airport already welcomes flights from abroad, e.g. from Singapore or Kuala Lumpur .

To find the best and cheapest flights for your trip to Lombok, check out Skyscanner . There you can compare prices, departure times, flight duration and the different airlines.

You can take a boat to Lombok from e.g. Bali, the Gili Islands or Sumbawa. There is a difference between speed boats and local boats, because not only prices but the duration of travel can vary significantly. An overview of different boats can be found on 12go.asia .

Lombok is a relatively large island with almost endless options for accommodations. We personally recommend staying in Senggigi and the surrounding area . A fantastic hotel choice is the Qunci Villas Resort , located right on a secluded, peaceful beach. The resort is beautifully integrated into the tropical surroundings and offers spacious rooms and stunning villas, some of which come with private pools, garden views, or ocean views. Naturally, you’ll find all the amenities you need, including air conditioning, a minibar, a safe, a seating area, and more.

Swimming pool, beach, and rooms at the Qunci Villas Resort (Fotos: Qunci Villas Resort)

The Qunci Villas Resort also features a spa for wellness treatments, three infinity pools, and several restaurants. These restaurants offer a range of culinary delights, including international, Asian, and local cuisine, ensuring that all your dining needs are met. The resort’s prime location is another highlight, with Senggigi just a few minutes away by taxi or scooter, where you’ll find even more restaurants and shops to explore.

Of course, there are also a number of beautiful hotels and homestays in Kuta or other parts of the island that you can book at affordable rates .

3 paradise islands – which seem tiny compared to Lombok – are located only 20 minutes away by boat: Gili Trawangan , the main island, Gili Meno and Gili Air .

The Gilis are very popular for scuba diving and snorkeling but also for relaxing, swimming and partying. Backpackers and tourists visit especially Gili Trawangan often. Over here you can feel the lively reggae-ganja-magic-mushroom-vibe. The Gili islands are a must!

View on Lombok from Gili Trawangan

You can also discover the colorful underwater world of the Gilis by snorkeling on a day trip from Lombok. With a little bit of luck, you can even spot turtles.

View from the Scallywags Gili Trawangan at Lombok, Indonesia

The second highest volcano of Indonesia is definitely one of the highlights of Lombok! You can book multi-day, guided tours to the Crater Lake and even to the top at all touristy spots. The pictures speak for themselves…

View to the top of the Rinjani and the crater lake Segara Anak

Most tourists arrive in Senggigi because many hotels are located over here. It’s also great for going out at night or eating. One of the most popular surf spots for locals and tourists alike is Senggigi Beach.

At this beach the vendors and locals aren’t pushy at all but you can have a nice small talk if you like (mainly about football since Indonesians love football).

Senggigi Beach, Lombok

To explore this road next to the coast it is best to use a scooter, which you can rent for example in Senggigi. One of the highlights is the viewpoint at Malimbu Hill 1 and 2 . It offers a marvelous view over Malimbu and Nipah Beach and the 3 Gili Islands . Check out the other view points and beaches that you can find on this way as well since they are worth seeing, too.

If you leave Lombok with the public boats to the Gili Islands and would take a taxi from the airport or from Lembar (where the public ferry from Bali arrives) you will probably use the very same road (or you tell the taxi driver your preferred route) since this road goes directly to Bangsal , where public boats are leaving.

Setangi Beach, Lombok

Taking a winding road through a breathtaking mountain landscape is the second option to get to Bangsal. It’s were you find the so-called monkey forest, named after the numerous wild monkeys in the jungle and near the street. Feed the hungry and annoying little bastards at the view points if you like.

But be careful and look for your bags, backpacks and such. You can go there by scooter as well, but always “Hati Hati”, like the Indonesian says.

Monkey Forest, Lombok, Indonesia

If you don’t want to explore Lombok on your own with a scooter, you can also visit the Malimbu Hill viewpoints and the Monkey Forest on a guided day tour .

After Senggigi , Kuta is probably the second tourist hotspot on Lombok. It offers beautiful beaches as well and lots of accommodations and restaurants.

From here you can explore the dream beaches of Mawun , Tanjung Aan and Selong Belanak since they are very close by (see below). Even Kuta Beach itself is worth a look.

Turquoise water at Kuta Beach Lombok

Now I will introduce you some of my favorite beaches of Lombok. One if them is Mawun.

Depending on the weekday and the time of the day, this beach with its soft white sand and turquoise water is still mostly deserted. Sometimes the waves are heavier over here. The beach is secluded and located west of Kuta in an almost enclosed bay, which you can easily reach with your scooter as well.

The deserted Mawun Beach in the south of Lombok

I believe I rarely saw such a wide and shallow beach like Selong Belanak somewhere else. You can perfectly surf or swim at this long beach.

I strongly recommend taking a look at the near viewpoint overlooking the beach and the bay. It’s located a bit north of Selong Belanak Beach. It’s still an insiders’ tip and you shouldn’t miss it when you do a scooter tour.

Sunbeds and turquoise water at Selong Belanak Beach near Kuta

Turquoise sea and white sand, the way I love it! Even here you can climb a rock to enjoy a breathtaking view over the two bays and beaches of Aan. A must-see!

View of the second section of Tanjung Aan Beach at Kuta, Lombok

It’s not really an insiders’ tip anymore, but still worth a visit! The drive is quite difficult since in my opinion the streets on the Ekas Peninsula (where the Pink Beach is located) cannot be called streets anymore. At least they are being improved bit by bit every year. If you actually make it there, you will be rewarded with a desolate quiet beach. It is called after its pink sand that consists out of coral.

The view from the near viewpoint is marvelous as well and the also worth seeing cliffs of Tanjung Ringgit are situated close by.

Pink Beach, Lombok, Indonesia

In contrast to Bali, Lombok and the rest of Indonesia are mainly Muslim. That is why you can see and especially hear mosques everywhere. If you book your accommodation in advance, you should inform yourself if it’s closely located to a mosque. Especially around Ramadan it could become very noisy.

Islamic Center in Mataram, Lombok

The Balinese minority on Lombok got its temples like Pura Meru , Pura Lingsar , Pura Narmada or Pura Batu Bolong as well. 2 true insiders’ tips are Pura Gunung Sari north of Mataram and Pura Suranadi .

Most of them are located at the western part of the island in and around Mataram/Cakranegara or Senggigi.

Pura Suranadi, Lombok, Indonesia

Lombok got numerous waterfalls, mostly in the northern part of the island. Among others, there would be Tiu Teja , Tiu Kelep or Sendang Gile . In the center of Lombok you will find a few decent ones as well, for example the Benang Kelambu , Benang Stokel or Jeruk Manis near Tetebatu .

There is no fresher water than this! Drink it, swim or just let the ice cold water hail down your back – superb!

Benang Kelambu, Lombok, Indonesia

The visit of the Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile waterfalls are great to combine, even with an organized tour .

The Sasak are the indigenous people of this island, which today make about 85% of the total population of Lombok. Their culture is fascinating and as a visitor you definitely need to experience it.

Their food known for its spiciness, their handicraft, their music and dances, the typical Sasak houses or a Sasak wedding with (extreme loud) street parade with “Gendang Beleq” musicians you need to experience. There are plenty wedding parades on Lombok, especially on the weekends. Must-see!

By the way, many of the Lombok natives still speak the Sasak language, especially the older. But everyone speaks and understands the official language Bahasa Indonesia. English only helps in tourist spots, which makes a guided tour a great option to get to know the Sasak culture.

The markets are typical Asian with fresh veggies, spices, fish and so much more.

I recommend the traditional market in Ampenan . Every now and then locals look in astonishment at a “Bule” (westerner) since they don’t come often over here. There is no cheaper or fresher place to do food shopping even though as a “Bule” you should consider paying more than a local. It is of advantage to speak a little Indonesian.

For stuff like clothes, jewelry or other souvenirs you should visit the Cakranegara Market (Pasar Cakranegara) in Mataram.

Traditional market in Ampenan, Lombok, Indonesia

Counting around 420.000 inhabitants, Mataram is the capital of Lombok and the province Nusa Tenggara Barat .

Close by you find places like Ampenan where you can still find some old Dutch colonial style buildings. In the district Cakranegara (short: “Cakra”) are a few lovely Balinese temples and the Mataram Mall with its numerous shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants as well as fast food chains on different levels.

Even bigger and more modern is the recently built Lombok Epicentrum mall at the main street Sriwijaya.

I loved Lombok so much! It was so quiet compared to Bali! I think my favorite place of the island was Tiu Kelep! Wow!

You hear a lot about plastics on the beaches and in the water in Indonesia. Is this the case in Lombok and the Gili Islands?

unfortunately yes 🙁

Not everywhere and not in every season. Please don’t generalize.

Hi Marcel, Im coming to Lombok in February and want to swim- is there a place you’d recommend for calm water and a clean beach that also has accommodation. In Bali the west coast isn’t suitable – the east is more protected. is Lombok the same? the east looks undeveloped on the map ? Many thanks for advise, Julie
