Lynyrd Skynyrd (formed in 1966) is an American southern hard-rock, country and blues band hailing from Jacksonville, Florida, in the U.S.

The earliest incarnation of Lynyrd Skynyrd, formed by friends Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins and Gary Rossington, performed under the moniker My Backyard, before switching to One Percent in 1968. Two years later the band thanks to headlining a series of local concerts and opening for several national acts, Lynyrd Skynyrd became a popular Jacksonville act, they honed their hard-rock, southern blues style and began to make their studio recordings.

As a result of a successful performance at an Atlanta club Funocchio, which caught to attention of producer Al Kooper, the band singed to MCA in 1972. The band’s debut album arrived in 1973 with members Van Zant on lead vocals, Rossington on lead guitar and rhythm guitar, Collins also on guitar, Ed King on lead guitar, Billy Powell on keyboard, Bob Burns on drums and Leon Wilkeson on bass. The single “Free Bird” from the album earned Lynyrd Skynyrd their first taste of national exposure, notorious for their three guitar attack.

It wasn’t long before the band developed a popular following, with the success of “Free Bird” and opening for the Who on their “Quadrophenia” tour. Lynyrd Skynyrd's sophomore album “Second Helping” was released 1974 featuring the hit single “Sweet Home Alabama”. The album has since been certified multi-platinum and was followed up by 1975’s Nuthin’ Fancy”. “Nuthin’ Fancy saw Burns and King leave the band and replaced by Artimus Pyle. The album was there first to break the Top 10 and performed much better than its successor “Gimme Back My Bullets” released in 1976.

The band maintained its devoted following through well-documented touring and the release of the double live album “One More from the Road”. Three days after the release of the band’s sixth studio album “Street Survivors” on October 17, 1977, the band’s privately chartered plane crashed outside of Gillsburg, Mississippi. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and his back-up singer sister Cassie all died in the crash with everybody else picking up manageable injuries. Due to the event and the media coverage, “Street Survivors” became one of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s biggest and most popular albums, however the band soon broke up after the crash.

In 1987 members Rossington, Powell, King and Wilkeson reunited Lynyrd Skynyrd with the addition of vocalist Johnny Van Zant and guitarist Randall Hall. The band toured relentlessly which can be heard on the double live album “Southern by the Grace of God/Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Tour - 1987”.

The band subsequently released a string of studio albums including “Endangered Species” in 1994, “Twenty” in 1997, “Edge of Forever” in 1999, “Christmas Time Again” in 2000, “Vicious Cycle” in 2003 and “God & Guns” in 2009. In 2012 Lynyrd Skynyrd released the album “Last of a Dyin’ Breed”, it was produced by Bob Marlette and recorded at Blackbird Studios in Nashville, Tennessee, U.S.

Live reviews

Well, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hands down the hardest working band in the land, came to my area. San Francisco. I can't recall the Southern Rockers playing a venue in San Francisco, let alone headlining, since the 70's, at the now, just a memory Bill Graham's Winterland Arena. It was Lynyrd Skynyrd and Bad Co. together for a night in the city by the bay. And what a weekend for the Bay Area to host an event with so much happening in and around the Golden Gate. I live just North of San Fran in the wine country. Usually a pleasant 45 minute drive South on the state route 101. Last night was no exception. I'm sure the boys in the band will be hanging around today to stop in at the 49ers new home in Santa Clara to take in the game vs. the Denver Broncos. I don't recall, but I believe their next performance is in Saratoga tonight which would take their tour bus right by Levi Stadium. What a fantastic state of the art sporting arena that is. Lynyrd Skynyrd, my FAVORITE band in the world, so close to home. A few years back they played at the now closed down resort, Konocti Harbor, in Clearlake, I was fortunate to see them there 2 or 3 times. They played both the outdoor amphitheater and the small, intimate indoor stage. On Superbowl Sunday of all days. Probably THE MOST badass kickass rock-n-roll show I had ever seen. And, I've seen a lot. Skynyrd took the stage immediately following the Denver Broncos and the Greenbay Packers Superbowl game. What a game that was. By games end the crowd inside the Konocti Resort was well lubed and rowdy. Setting the stage for a typical bar room brawlin beer guzzlin fist fightin broken furniture guitar slingin amplifier blowin rock show. Their signature giant Confederate Army flag dropped the lights came up, and BAM! like a ton of led, Gary Rossington's screaming Les Paul Guitar fired right down your throat. I have goose bumps and tears in my eyes right now typing this review. There they were, my hero's. Four feet in front of me. Jamming. Playing ALL the Skynyrd hits. They played for well over an hour. I Idolized Ronnie Van Zant since the day I first received the vinyl album Nuthin Fancy for my 13th birthday. It was 1974. I was use to my older brother smoking weed in his bedroom and listening to Prounced Lehnerd Skinerd in his bedroom and would always put my ear to the wall when the epic Freebird song would play. I would air guitar Allen Collins and his solo. What fond memories. I once drew a picture of Ronnie Van Zant that, I guess was so good, it was stolen from house during a party later in my life. I miss that drawing. Probably THE BEST drawing I have ever done. Forward to 2014, San Francisco, California. Lynyrd Skynyrd and Bad Co. I didn't get to go. AGAIN. This is the 2nd time. First time was 1977. Day on the Green, Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California. Directly across the bay. I was given a ticket the night before the concert. It was my Birthday. It was the last concert Lynyrd Skynyrd would play in California before the horrific and devastating plane crash on October 20, 1977. Lynyrd Skynyrd and Peter Frampton. I couldn't get a ride. Oh, a lot of my friends were there for sure, but I couldn't hook it up. In fact the entire Sonoma County Rocker Army was on The Green for that show. Not me. And my idol was killed shortly after that day. No. Lynyrd Skynyrd at The Warfield Theater in Downtown San Francisco was way over my budget for me to attend. Lynyrd Skynyrd had finally out priced me. Kicked me to the curb. I am disabled now. I live on a measly little SSI income. I can't afford concert tickets anymore. The ticket prices for Lynyrd Skynyrd, in my opinion, were astronomical. Way over "The Workin Man" budget. So much for playin for the fans. So long Skynyrd, you are in a different stratosphere than I am now. I will still listen to every song, on every album you ever made. Even the ones you haven't made yet, because I AM a DIEHARD LYNYRD SKYNYRD FAN! To the core. My blood runs deep in the South. My hair is turning white, my neck has always been red, and my collar is still blue. Gary, carry on the name and your signature sound, I will always be your biggest fan. Johnny you are doing your brother proud. Instead of San Francisco, and spending two, three, or most likely four hundred dollars that I don't have, I drove 18 minutes westward to the little town and my former stompin grounds, Forestville, California. The infamous Forestville Club. Eric Lindell and his band returned to his Little Ol club that he always enjoyed playing so much. A place he calls home in West County. For 20 bucks. What a great show he put on. I danced my crippled self till 1AM. Eric Lindell what a fantastic musician and gentleman. Now that is my kind of venue.

Great show. They sounded great.. just wonderful. And the Forest Hills venue was beautiful and first class. Skynyrd was at the top of their game. Iconic and legendary artists. Amazing show.

Hank Williams Jr was awful though.. odd & confusing act IMO, complete with a carnival-like stage-intro announcement on the PA mentioning how many awards and hits he has (we didn't know any of his "hits"). He constantly told stories about how famous and important he is, who he wrote songs for, his father, etc etc... His act seemed like one long lecture and bio/promo to a captive audience. Strangest parts were when he started-- for some very odd reason-- playing Cat Scratch Fever and Walk This Way covers, and about 30 seconds into each song, stopped to talk more, and never returned to finish those songs, and, also when he took the stool halfway through his show for an "acoustic set", and was basically talking the whole time, barely playing the guitar or any long form songs. After a relatively upbeat first few songs, this "acoustic" set yak-fest just popped the air and energy right out of the place. Maybe this is all why he is still an opening act, and not the headliner. Talked way too much, and couldn't wait for the lame act of this cocky blowhard to end.

Lynyrd Skynyrd can do no wrong. I got to see them and ZZ Top at the Backyard in Austin, Texas. I am young, but I know enough of their music to appreciate them. This was one of the better live concerts I have ever gone to. It seemed like everyone in the crowd knew every word to every song. I distinctly remember the concert as being family friendly but extremely exciting too. These guys may be getting old, but they will keep on rocking until they just can't rock any longer. Not only did they play the hits, but some other great songs too. Hopefully they will keep putting on great shows like this for a while. Lynyrd Skynyrd is a band that everyone should get to see at least once in their life. This was an amazing show and I feel lucky to have been able to see both of these great bands. I have known their music since I was a child, and have grown up hearing their wonderful songs. If you ever get the chance, I would definitely suggest going to see Lynyrd Skynyrd. You will not regret it.

I saw the pre plane crash Lynryd Skynyrd

in Ft Worth, Texas in 1974. They were on top of the world then and the concert was

great. It was the best concert I had ever

been to until I went to the first of 5 McCartney. I was a stupid kid in 10th grade and my buddies and I drove over

from Dallas. The lead singer and leader of the band, Ronnie Van Zant, somehow got

a cut on his forehead swinging the mic stand around. He had blood flowing down

his face the rest of the show. A guy I knew said he went to the band’s room after the show to find out

where the post party was and Ronnie was

getting his head patched up.

Planes have

been the death of many great rock bands beginning with Buddy Holly. I was at Texas Tech at the time and during one of my classes the professor got word somehow and announced to the class about the crash. It was very sad day.

I have not had the chance of seeing the new Skynyrd in concert. After seeing the original I don’t know if I could see the new.

This Concert was so Bitter Sweet! I can honestly say I have seen thousands and thousands of concerts over the years and Lynard Skynard NEVER disappoints. However, this show was by far the VERY BEST CONCERT EVER! It makes me sad to think that I will never experience the Warmth, Excitement, Extreme Fun, & Overall Euphoria as I did on Saturday night, again due to this being their Farewell Tour! I love this band and they love their fans! Simply AWESOME Band! True Entertainment! This band has always been my Husband's Favorite Band and soon after I met him, I realized why. They have climbed hurdle after hurdle with loss and crazy black clouds following their path over the many years that they made their musical way. Yet, they are still on top and saying Farewell! I Love Lynard Skynard!

Saw Lynyrd Skynyrd again Friday night. After 31 years on tour, these guys can still rock out with the best of them. I've seen them in several different cities on several different occasions and have never been disappointed. Friday night at the Amp in Rogers, AR, they proved once again that they are one of hardest working bands out there today. Their farewell tour setup is amazing! They've combined footage of past concerts and family pictures to show where they came from and how they got to where they are now. I hate to see them quit touring, but I'm damned glad I got to see one of their final shows.

Massive Wagons and Status Quo guest starred.

Massive Wagons were good, Status Quo absolute brilliant, amazing song choices and they performed spectacularly.

Lynyrd Skynyrd were out of this world, loved every second. Video background was lovely and showed us again they will never forget thier roots. So grounded and appreciative of all the attending fans. Skynyrd chose the perfect set of songs and everyone was up singing and rocking away. I will never forgot it. A night to remember. Thank you for blessing us last night 29/07/2019 @ SSE Arena Wembley London

Lynyrd Skynyrd was awesome! They played for a solid hour and a half, rocking the house the whole time. No, it’s not the original Lynyrd Skynyrd but you would never know. Johnny Van Zant has filled in admirably for his brother and it was great to see Gary Rossington still playIng those guitar licks. My only complaint is with the parking at the Toyota Amphitheatre. It literally took an hour to park and more than an hour to get out. There has to be better traffic control or people will not make the trip to Wheatland. Rock on!

harryd818’s profile image

It was a great show. They played most of the classics but it was what seemed to be a short set. With over 40 years of material they could have played all night. They could have thrown more picks! I did end up with a drum head and a very sweaty towel from Mr. Rickey! The one bad thing is that the Meet and Greet was not listed when I bought the tickets. I would have loved to do that one. It needs to be publicized when the tickets go on sale so fans can confirm it then.

Lynyrd Skynyrd in Savannah was Great! Really enjoyed the songs and the talent. Unfortunately, was tired by the time they came on. Opening band was poor. Would have been better without them. Marshall Tucker was better, but mostly played filler music to take up time. Neither band did anything to get the crowd ready for Lynyrd Skynyrd. They played solidly for 90 minutes and closed with Free Bird. Awesome!

Gary Rossington continues to have a significant presence and creative influence with the band, while making select appearances on the road.

The rock and roll powerhouse continually tours, and as Van Zant shares, “It’s about the legacy of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and what it stands for, what the fans are all about. There’s nothing like getting out there playing a great show with Skynyrd and seeing people love this music.”  Adds Rossington, “We’re still standing, Still keeping the music going. We wanted to do the guys who aren’t with us any more proud, and keep the name proud, too.”

With a catalog of over 60 albums, billions of streams, and tens of millions of records sold,  Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Lynyrd Skynyrd remain a cultural icon that appeal to all generations.

About ZZ Top:

“That Little Ol’ Band From Texas” has been at it for well over a half century delivering rock, blues and boogie on stage and studio to millions of devoted fans. With iconography as distinctive as their sound, ZZ TOP is globally recognized with their beards, hotrod cars, spinning guitars and that magic keychain, all of which transcend geography and language.

It was in 1969 Houston when ZZ TOP coalesced from the core of two rival bands, Billy Gibbons’ Moving Sidewalks and Frank Beard and Dusty Hill’s American Blues. ZZ Top’s 1973 release, Tres Hombres , catapulted them to national attention with the hit “La Grange,” still one of the band’s signature pieces today.  Eliminator , their 1983 album was something of a paradigm shift for ZZ TOP. Their roots blues skew was intact and added to the mix came their hightech-age trappings that soon found a visual outlet with such tracks as “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Legs” on the nascent MTV. It was one of the record industry’s first albums to have been certified Diamond, far beyond Gold and Platinum, a reflection of sales exceeding 10 million units.

As a touring outfit, they’ve been without peer over the past five decades, having performed before millions of fans over four continents and have been the subject of their own Grammy-nominated documentary titled That Little Ol’ Band From Texas.   The band’s line-up of the bearded Gibbons and Hill and Beard, who ironically is clean shaven, remained intact for more than 50 years.  When Dusty temporarily departed the tour in the summer of 2021, Elwood Francis entered the picture accepting the directive from Dusty to be the perfect choice to stand in on the bass-guitar and now handles the low-end duties for the band for the present as well as into the future.

The elements that keep ZZ TOP fresh, enduring can be summed up in the three words of the band’s internal mantra: “Tone, Taste and Tenacity”. As genuine roots performers, they have few peers. Their influences are both the originators of the form – Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Jimmy Reed, et al – as well as the British blues rockers and Jimi Hendrix who emerged generations before ZZ’s ascendance.

They have sold hundreds of millions of records over the course of their career, have been officially designated as Heroes of The State of Texas, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (by Keith Richards, no less) and have been referenced in countless cartoons and sitcoms. They are true rock icons and, against all odds, they’re really just doing what they’ve always done. ZZ TOP abides!

Watch Lynyrd Skynyrd Salute Gary Rossington at First Show Since Guitarist’s Death

By Joseph Hudak

Joseph Hudak

If you thought the death of Gary Rossington , Lynyrd Skynyrd ’s sole surviving original member, last Sunday would bring the Southern rock band’s 52-year career to a close, you only had to be at the Plant City Strawberry Festival in Florida Sunday night. Lynyrd Skynyrd took the stage a week after their founding guitarist’s death at 71 to play all the hits, from “What’s Your Name” and “Gimme Three Steps” to the one-two show-closing punch of “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird.”

Trump Says We ‘Gotta’ Restrict the First Amendment

Trump campaign asserts right to use foo fighters' 'my hero' at rally, the oasis reunion: six burning questions we have about a possible tour, the man behind the steele dossier is ready to talk.

Last fall, Rossington talked to Rolling Stone about classic bands that carry on with just a few, if any, original members. “I look out and don’t see the original band — it’s strange. And then I look out and see a replacement for me, which is strange. Just hearing the songs without me playing on ’em live is very strange,” he said . “So there’s 101 strange things happening. But to see the younger people enjoying it makes your heart warm.”

Lynyrd Skynyrd’s next show is set for April 29 in Brandon, Mississippi. This summer, they’ll join ZZ Top — who also soldiered on with a replacement after founding member Dusty Hill died in 2021 — on a joint tour. The Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour begins July 21 in West Palm Beach, Florida, and runs through September.

“Nobody could ever fill Ronnie’s shoes”: The second coming of Lynyrd Skynyrd

“I never have, and I never will, because only one man can sing this song on stage, and that’s my older brother Ronnie Van Zant. So you guys sing for us tonight, OK? Can you let him hear you in rock’n’roll Heaven?”

Placing Ronnie’s Hi-Roller hat on a spotlit mic-stand, Lynyrd Skynyrd ’s Johnny Van Zant leaves the stage. The band that remains strike up the instantly recognisable opening chords, and Free Bird rings out. It’s 1987, and with those chords, and an audience singing Ronnie’s words in full voice, Skynyrd returned…

As resurrections go, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s is one of the more surprising. And successful. A full decade after the crash that decimated them and seemingly confined them to the annals of rock’n’roll history, the South rose, phoenix-like, from the flames…

The Starwood Amphitheater, Nashville, Tennessee was jam-packed for Charlie Daniels’ Volunteer Jam, an annual event hosted by the country star to raise funds for muscular dystrophy. Guitarists Gary Rossington and Ed King, pianist Billy Powell, bassist Leon Wilkeson, drummer Artimus Pyle and Ronnie Van Zant’s kid brother Johnny regrouped with the idea of paying tribute to Ronnie and the band he had led.

Time has obscured whose idea it actually was, but it was Gary Rossington who galvanised everyone into action. “That was hard, you know?” he admits, a quarter of a century on. “We didn’t wanna go back out ’cos we didn’t have Ronnie, but I thought Johnny was around singing, and I thought he could sing and sounded like Ronnie. We thought if we could go out and do the tribute to Ronnie with Johnny, we could sound like ourselves. And that’s the way that it went.”

The person who would need most convincing, however, was Johnny. Although he’d released a few albums in his own right at the start of the decade, by the mid-80s he’d reached a pivotal point of his own. Turning his back on the record industry, Johnny was making a sound living being his own boss, freighting goods across the US. Music was in his blood though, and he couldn’t quite let it go. He was still writing songs and recording demos, and the stars would align so that he was on the verge of signing a major recording contract to the tune of a quarter of a million dollars with Ahmet Ertegun and Atlantic Records. Then the phone rang. It was Gary Rossington.

The Atlantic deal was offered on a Monday, remembers Johnny, and it was all in the hands of his lawyers. “On the Friday, Gary called me about being in Lynyrd Skynyrd,” he says. “Within one week, it went boom-boom-boom. That was kind of overwhelming. I was like, ‘Holy crap, I’m just a truck driver!’”

A truck driver, maybe, but one with music in his soul and very deep familial ties to Lynyrd Skynyrd. It was a huge ask: Ronnie was, after all, irreplaceable. Not only in the public’s eyes, but in Johnny’s too.

“I said, ‘I gotta talk to my dad. Then I gotta talk to my brother, my sisters and my mom. I gotta see what everybody thinks.’ Because after the plane crash happened, we were like, ‘This is the end of Lynyrd Skynyrd.’”

Following an emotional meeting of the surviving bandmates and spouses in Bay Meadow in Jacksonville, everyone realised that they didn’t want the plane crash to be the last word in the Skynyrd story. They believed there was a big demand from the fans who wanted to see them play again. The consensus in the room was that they believed Ronnie would’ve wanted them to do it, so the Van Zant family gave their blessing to their youngest son for the one-off tribute tour. But how, and even whether, it would work, was still unclear.

That Skynyrd were getting back together was a surprise for everyone involved, and even more surprisingly, the old magic was still there. “It was fun to start playing again,” Rossington told Classic Rock in 2012. “We had [original Skynyrd guitarist] Allen Collins and Leon [Wilkeson] and Billy Powell. We got everybody left that was alive. And we had our old crew. It was fun to see everybody again.”

The previous year, guitarist Allen Collins had been in a car accident that not only claimed his girlfriend’s life, but also left him wheelchair-bound. But even he was along for the ride, acting as musical director while Randall Hall, his colleague from the Allen Collins Band, stood in for him on stage.

“Allen did the tribute tour with us,” Rossington said. “He had his own bus and it broke his heart, and ours, that he couldn’t come up to play. It was very hard emotionally for him to do that, but we wanted to show the people that we weren’t doing it just for money.

“It was very hard to see him like that, and for him to travel around. He was giving us the OK to do it – he wanted the name and the music to be heard and for us to go about our business. He travelled with us until he just couldn’t anymore. But that was really hard on the band.

Immortalised on vinyl as the double live album Southern By The Grace Of God : Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Tour , the rejuvenated band began to realise that there might be more life in the old dog than just playing some shows.

“It just felt sad breaking up the family again after that one tour,” says Johnny. “Plus, the fans wanted it. So we made a new record and hit the road, and we’ve been at it ever since.”

Carrying on wouldn’t be without its difficulties, though. “It got hard after we started playing and doing a tour,” admitted Rossington in 2012. “Everybody had grown apart and separate, and was kind of grown up. We were only in our early 20s when the plane crashed, so after 10 more years you kind of grow up a little more and mature. Things change. So it was harder then. There was a lot of hard feelings and stuff.”

It wasn’t easy for Johnny, either, living up to the spectre of his brother – leading his band, taking control, remaining steadfast for the original members who were relying upon him. Being in the media spotlight, and handling the sometimes insensitive comparisons and critical appraisal, took its toll. But he (and the band) never gave up.

“Probably about the first three or four years, I was very… I don’t want to say uncomfortable, but I still didn’t know if we were doing the right thing,” Johnny says. “But people kept coming and saying how much Skynyrd affected their lives.” It truly was the power of the fondly named Skynyrd Nation that kept them going.

An early obstacle would be the loss of Allen Collins. Having done his best to support the band, he’d never truly recovered from the car accident, and succumbed to pneumonia on January 23, 1990.

“It was a bad time all round for the band. We were still drinking a lot and doing drugs,” said Rossington. “The songwriting was kinda stifled.”

Assuming a songwriting role for Skynyrd was also initially problematic for Johnny. “I admired what they did – they wrote fantastic songs,” he concedes. “I’ve always had people go, ‘Well, how can you write another Free Bird or Sweet Home Alabama ?’ And I go, ‘You can’t. That was back then. This is now.’ I never tried. Nobody could ever fill Ronnie’s shoes.”

Of course they couldn’t, but following Collins’ death, the band felt ready to think about entering the studio. Randall Hall remained on guitar in Collins’ stead, and this would be the first time that Johnny would sing for the band in the studio. Released in the summer of 1991, Skynyrd’s first album appearance in 14 years kept it simple. Entitled Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991 , it was fairly warmly received, and served as enough impetus to keep the band going.

Touring continued apace until the band reached Canada in August. At which point, drummer Artimus Pyle would be the next to leave the Skynyrd fold, citing issues with drugs and alcohol. There would be animosity from the former drummer in later days, but still Skynyrd found the energy to carry on, with Kurt Custer taking over on drums for the first half of the 1990s.

The Last Rebel came in 1993, and while it was greeted with positive reviews in the rock press, it was decidedly more country-like in tone. But the next pivotal change to Skynyrd would come as Free Bird: The Movie was released. Consisting of footage from a live show shot at 1977’s Day On The Green in Oakland, interspersed with interviews, home movies and documentary material, it highlighted Skynyrd at the height of their powers. It also served as the catalyst for the final piece of the Skynyrd jigsaw falling into place for the new millennium. Rickey Medlocke was now best known as Blackfoot’s lead singer and lead guitarist, but he’d also passed through Skynyrd’s ranks in the very early days, occupying the drum stool back in 1970.

It was a chance encounter that would change the course of Medlocke’s life and significantly contribute to Skynyrd’s upward trajectory. “In 1995 I saw the Lynyrd Skynyrd guys at the premiere for the Free Bird movie in Atlanta, Georgia,” he remembers. “We did an all-star jam, and then in 1996 Gary called me up, I sat down and we played some, and he said, ‘Do you wanna do this?’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ And this was 16 years ago.”

There was no hesitation in Medlocke agreeing to rejoining the band he’d left behind over two decades earlier. “I was looking for something different in my life. So this was really cool,” he says. He kept his commitment to Blackfoot through 1997, but called it a day with the band he’d founded shortly thereafter.

“It was incredible!” exclaims Medlocke about being back in the Skynyrd fold. “You know, I’d missed those guys. I’d always enjoyed playing with that band, so it was great to come back and be playing guitar, because I was the drummer the first time around. To come back in as one of the main guitar players was very gratifying and just an honour.”

It was as if Medlocke had never been away. “We had rehearsed for about a week-and-a-half, two weeks, and the very first gig was in West Palm Beach, the Verizon Amphitheater, in May of ’96,” the guitarist says, proudly. “It was dead on, man. Spot on. It worked. And it’s still workin’.”

Bolstered by Medlocke’s songwriting contributions and renewed enthusiasm, Lynyrd Skynyrd rode out the rest of the 90s with two more albums, the self-explanatory Twenty (referencing two decades since the fateful plane crash) and 1999’s Edge Of Forever , but who could ever have predicted that the dawning of the 21st century and its first decade would see the rejuvenated Lynyrd Skynyrd reach the height of their powers?

As with seemingly everything Skynyrd-shaped though, it wouldn’t be easy ride. The first blow would come on July 27, 2001, when Leon Wilkeson – the band’s stalwart bassist since 1972 – was found dead in his Florida hotel room, chronic liver disease and emphysema claiming him at the age of 49.

“I’m disappointed in Leon,” Johnny told Classic Rock shortly afterwards. “He lived through a plane crash, how can he let booze screw it all up for him?”

Sadly he did, but it didn’t stop Skynyrd. If anything, the loss made them stronger as they headed into the new millennium. Vicious Cycle – an album with an eerily prophetic title given the benefit of hindsight – would drop in 2003, and by mid-decade the band were finally given their due credit as they were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

Kid Rock – who has never been shy of proclaiming his love for the Florida band – took to the stage at New York’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel on March 13, 2006, to induct them alongside Black Sabbath , Miles Davis, Blondie and the Sex Pistols. The touring version of Skynyrd – joined by Bob Burns, Artimus Pyle, Ed King and Honkettes JoJo Billingsley and Leslie Hawkins – tore through spirited versions of Sweet Home Alabama and Free Bird .

It was really 2009’s God & Guns that once again marked Skynyrd out as a force to be reckoned with. But, as is seemingly always the way with this band that defies the odds, it was yet another album to be beset with tragedy.

“I’ll be perfectly honest with you. Number one, it’s the best record I’ve done since I’ve been back with this band, and number two, I think this is the best material the band has written,” Rickey Medlocke told Classic Rock at the time of its release. “I think this is the best record since the original band. And it wasn’t easy to do. It was heavy stress, heavy thoughts every day. We lost members while we were making this record. We had to talk to our bass player, who was too sick to play, on the phone. And it was just killing us. I’m glad we got it out for those boys. And they’re very missed right now.”

They were. Guitarist Hughie Thomasson (who had replaced long-timer Ed King) had left the fold in 2005, but he was still very much a part of the greater Skynyrd family, contributing to the songwriting for God & Guns . A heart attack would take his life in 2007.

And that was far from the end of it. Ean Evans, the man brought in in 2001 in place of Wilkeson, would lose his hard-fought battle with cancer on May 6, 2009. And finally, brutally culling Lynyrd Skynyrd’s original members to Gary Rossington alone, a heart attack would take the life of keyboard player Billy Powell.

“We went through a lot putting God & Guns together,” Van Zant says. “You know, I was there a few minutes after Billy died. I pulled up to his condo, and the paramedics were walking down the stairs. I said, ‘What’s going on up there?’ They said, ‘Who are you?’ I told ’em I played in a band with Billy, and they told me he just passed away. Talk about surreal. I drove home feeling completely numb. I was not expecting it. With Ean, he had cancer. He put up a great fight, and he was a very religious guy. They both were, so at least I know they’re both in a better place now.

“But it was our determination: we really set out to finish this thing. We started the record last year and we said, ‘We’re not just gonna finish it, we’re going to make it something those boys would be proud of.’ And I guarantee you that they would be.”

In 2012, they released a new album, Last Of A Dyin’ Breed - a title that was a poignant as it was defiant. As of today, it’s the last record to bear the Skynyrd name. Gary Rossington - the sole remaining founder member, and a survivor in every sense of the word – passed away in 2023, leaving Johnny Van Zant and Rickey Medlocke to carry the torch without him.

“I’m the last original member, so I feel like it’s my job to keep the legacy alive,” Gary Rossington said in 2012. “All my old buddies, all the original guys – Ronnie and everybody – we had a dream to make it big and be heard, and that’s all I’m tryin’ to do, to just keep it going.”

Lynyrd Skynyrd Rethink Farewell: ‘Maybe It’s Not Our Time to Go’

Lynyrd Skynyrd announced their Big Wheels Keep on Turnin' Tour for 2021 — and detailed a goal to continue with a more "selective" approach beyond a live run previously described as  their "farewell."

The 30-date U.S. trek begins June 13 in Forest City, Iowa, and wraps Nov. 19 in Bossier City, La. Thirteen of the shows go on sale June 11 at 10AM local time, preceded by a presale launching June 9 at 10AM local time. (Fans can access the latter sale via the Lynyrd Skynyrd site and using the code SKYNYRDBIGWHEELS.)

You can see the full list of dates below.

Tesla will open the majority of the dates. Support acts for other shows include Kansas , Joan Jett  and the Blackhearts, Blackberry Smoke , Allman Betts Band and the Marshall Tucker Band .

The tour news arrives over 15 months after the band was forced to table a planned final tour due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We were two shows into the end of the three-year plan for the farewell tour, when the virus hit and everything was just gone,” singer Johnny Van Zant said in a statement. “Once something is taken away from you - music and touring, in our case - you truly realize how important it is and such a part of your life. Music is a great healer, and that’s what we all turn to when things are good or bad. A Skynyrd show is a family affair, and we want these dates to help heal our fans as much as ourselves."

Guitarist Gary Rossington noted that the pandemic "turned [their] world upside down."

"And since that time, we have been talking amongst the band, and realized that music has such a way of healing," he added. "Maybe it’s not our time to go. And maybe it’s our time to lift people’s spirits and lives and bring back some joy and happiness after so much turmoil this past year. We’re still standing, still keeping the music going."

The band played their first show since the pandemic on June 4 at the Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam in Panama City Beach, Fla.

Lynyrd Skynyrd further detailed their touring plans in a new video interview, which you can watch below.

"There's a saying in the music business: You don't retire from it; it retires you," Rossington said. "I have heart problems . I thought I couldn't get around anymore a year or two ago. But I got it all fixed, so now I'm feeling all right."

"We're gonna finish what the heck we started," Van Zant added. "No pandemic's gonna keep us away from that. And we're gonna play other shows, but we're not gonna do as many. I think we're still gonna calm down what we've done. We're not gonna go out and hit it like we have been for 30-some years — 80, 90 shows. We're not gonna do that many shows. We're gonna be very selective."

Lynyrd Skynyrd to play at Florida Strawberry Fest despite passing of band member

PLANT CITY, Fla. — Despite the passing of Lynyrd Skynyrd band member Gary Rossington, the group will still perform at the Florida Strawberry Festival on March 12, event organizers announced Monday.

The band shared Sunday night that the original Lynyrd Skynyrd member and founder of the band died at 71.

“It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness that we have to advise, that we lost our brother, friend, family member, songwriter and guitarist, Gary Rossington, today,” the band wrote on Facebook. “Gary is now with his Skynyrd brothers and family in heaven and playing it pretty, like he always does. Please keep Dale, Mary, Annie and the entire Rossington family in your prayers and respect the family’s privacy at this difficult time.”

The Florida native has cheated death multiple times, according to the Associated Press . Officials have not released a cause of death for the guitarist and songwriter.

“Our Festival has lost a great friend, entertainer, and music icon,” said Florida Strawberry Festival President Paul Davis. “Our hearts go out to his entire family, all his fans and to the thousands of people whose lives he has enriched. We know we will have a special guest and guardian angel watching over this performance.”

The Lynyrd Skynyrd concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on the Wish Farms Soundstage. Tickets are still available for the show .
