Cool Cruiser

I cruise on Celebrity, and I have often wondered about the rank, color and insignia on officers' epaulettes and the various neckerchiefs worn by chefs .  I put this together (based on various sources) to give me a better idea of who is who and who does what.  Can anyone confirm the information here?

Sorry, I have no clue about ranks and epaulettes and the various neckerchiefs worn by chefs.

I always thought a white towel worn over the arm identified the person with the most important rank on a cruise ship.

Every company has slightly different insignia for ranks & ratings.

Colours - shipping companies that use colours to differentiate departments, normally use:

  • No colour - Deck & Security Dept
  • Purple - Engineering/Electricians/HVAC
  • White - Hotel
  • Red - Medical
  • Green - Used to be Radio Officers, but now tends to include electronics types
  • Traditional Merchant Navy will have a diamond incorporated into the stripes for those with Certificates of Competency (Deck & Engineering), however others just have straight stripes
  • Master - on commercial ships must come from the Deck Dept and traditionally has 4 stripes. However on cruise ships, you may see variations to differentiate from Staff Captain
  • Staff Captain - some have 3.5, others have 4 stripes
  • Senior Deck Officer - 3 stripes
  • Senior 2nd Officer - 2.5 stripes
  • 2nd Officer - 2 stripes
  • 3rd Officer - 1 stripe
  • Cadet - normally 1 very thin stripe running the length of the epaulette

When I started out I worked for BP … they had RN style curls, but 3/8 inch as opposed to the RN 1/2 inch. If memory serves me correctly the ER staff had red, but it was that long ago and my brain has faded accordingly 😵 ‍ 💫

Apparently this is not allowed (mistaken identity?) but they were given some kind of permission due their war efforts?

Am I correct in thinking that P&O just had plain stripes? No diamonds at all?

Affirmative, P&O had a dispensation from many years ago that they used the wider stripe, without the diamond.

That has been my experience as well.

That is what I recall seeing for a Cadet Officer on HAL rather than what was shown by the OP for an Apprentice Officer.

Celebrity Edge to Feature All Female Leadership Team

  • November 19, 2019

celebrity cruises 3rd officer

Celebrity Cruises has announced that that the Celebrity Edge will feature an all-female leadership team for a March 8, 2020 departure, marking International Women’s Day.

Celebrity Captain Kate McCue will be at the helm of the 2018-launched ship for the week-long sailing from Port Everglades. Port calls include San Juan, Tortola and St. Maarten.

Celebrity is curating unique specialty programming, including evening gallery exhibitions and art auctions featuring female artists, celebrating the female form; collaborating on an exclusive design with luxury jewelry designer Reout Kallati; hosting special events, such as a cinema series featuring iconic and impactful female directors, leads and inspirational narratives; and other dedicated onboard programming, including Women of the World-themed trivia challenges, Fearless Female Officers vs. Guests Pool Volleyball tournament, and a Q&A panel with the ship’s inspiring female leadership team.

Additional specialty programming is still to be announced, including a moderated discussion panel with current confirmed special guests including artist and child prodigy Autumn de Forest and fashion designer Mary Frances; unique networking opportunities and more, all with the goal of inspiring a new generation of young girls and women to continue pushing boundaries and breaking barriers, according to a company statement.

“We are all passionate about closing the gender gap,” said Celebrity Cruises President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo. “Over the last few years, we have worked hard to diversify the crew on board and bring more women than ever into our industry. None of this could have been possible without the leadership and shared vision of the extraordinary men and women I work with every day, led by Patrik Dahlgren and Brian Abel – who take this challenge to heart and have made it possible. We are fortunate to have many incredible, experienced and beyond-qualified women who have worked tirelessly to achieve these positions. And we also celebrate the many men who continue to support them and help champion having more women crew onboard.”

Senior Vice President of Global Marine Operations for Royal Caribbean Cruises Patrik Dahlgren, who has spearheaded Celebrity’s bridge diversification efforts under the leadership of Lutoff-Perlo, added: “Since 2015, we have raised the percentage of qualified women on our navigational bridges from 3% to 22%. Now, we hope this all-time industry-high will continue to grow; we just need more women to raise their hands for careers at sea, especially in engineering.”

“Excitement does not even begin to describe how I’m feeling about working alongside these incredible, barrier-breaking women on Celebrity Edge for this truly historic sailing,” added Captain McCue. “I am inspired every day by the amazing women we have working throughout this organization – both on land and at sea. They’re proof that there’s power in diversity.”

Among the officers are Captain McCue, First Officer Rachel Arnold and Second Officer Nicholine Tifuh Azirh.

Celebrity’s History-Making Cruise Changed the Way I Saw International Women’s Day

By Betsy Blumenthal

International Women's Day Celebrity Cruises

The band struck up a handful of familiar chords before the singer crooned a low, “Let’s go, girls,” the telltale drop to Shania Twain's late-nineties female empowerment anthem, “Man! I Feel Like a Woman.” Suddenly, everyone around me was dancing.

It was Sunday, March 8, 2020—International Women's Day—and we were in the Grand Plaza aboard Celebrity Edge , honoring the first night of the ship’s historic, seven-night sailing . For the first time in cruise industry history, the ship’s bridge and hotel officer crew was staffed entirely by women (27 of them, to be exact) with Captain Kate McCue , the first American woman to lead a mega cruise ship, at the helm. It would also be the last celebration of its kind for a while: A few days later, the world shut down because of the coronavirus, and the cruise industry was forced to hit pause.

The ship had departed from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, earlier that afternoon amid rough winds, with stops planned throughout the week in San Juan, Puerto Rico; Tortola, in the British Virgin Islands; and St. Maarten, before circling back to Fort Lauderdale. The destinations offered plenty to be excited about, but the ship was a draw in itself: Debuting in late 2018, the 2,900-passenger vessel's sleek design , complete with whimsical common spaces by Spanish interior designer Patricia Urquiola and staterooms by British interior designer Kelly Hoppen, felt like an appropriate venue for a week that promised to deliver fresh, forward-looking ideas through its programming.

A speech by Celebrity's President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo was the final flourish to the day’s celebrations, which included a “Purple Party Farewell”—a send-off from Fort Lauderdale christened with clusters of Suffragette-purple balloons—and Mardi Gras -like beads of the same shade swinging around passengers’ necks. The week ahead was full of scheduled appearances by women like Icelandic violinist Greta Salóme; and Kellee Edwards, the first Black woman to host her own show on the Travel Channel; along with a “Female Film Series” that screened movies like Captain Marvel . The gift shop, meanwhile, sold tote bags festooned with inspirational quotes from Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani girls' education activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner—and the ship’s godmother.

But looking past the branded merch and decor, it became clear that the company's efforts toward gender equality were worthy of celebration. Since becoming president and CEO of Celebrity Cruises in 2014, Lutoff-Perlo has ballooned the percentage of women working on the fleet's bridge teams from three percent to 28 percent. It's all part of an ongoing initiative to inspire more women to enter the maritime industry —one that has long been male-dominated and notoriously inhospitable to women. (One of the most enduring sailors' superstitions holds that having women on board brings bad luck, angering the seas and dooming the journey.) According to a survey conducted for BIMCO/ICS's 2015 Manpower Report , women represent just two percent of the world's 1.2 million seafarers—those working on cruise ships, to fisheries, to Ports Authority—a figure that makes Lutoff-Perlo's achievements all the more noteworthy.

International Women's Day Celebrity Cruises

The ship's history-making bridge and hotel officer team poses for a photo with Celebrity Cruises President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo in the Grand Plaza of Celebrity Edge.

The cruise wasn't only available to women; one English gentleman I met during that first night's celebrations told me he was on his second consecutive Celebrity cruise and had booked it without knowing about the special programming. But for many guests, the choice was almost certainly intentional. Over coffee the next morning, watching the waves foam and ripple beside me, I eyed a woman at the next table over sporting a “Got Consent?” t-shirt, and I knew there must be women—53 percent of whom accounted for the cruise's 2,294 guests—who had booked this for a reason.

The next day, at a panel featuring the officers and Lutoff-Perlo, I found what I'd been looking for: a group of five women who’d joined the trip for the express purpose of celebrating women at sea. Almost all captains, they had guided vessels spanning sailboats and United States Coast Guard ships. Most of them had come to know one another in 1990 through Sea Sense , now a St. Petersburg, Florida-based sailing and power-boating school founded by Captains Carol Cuddyer and Patti Moore back in 1989. They’d all booked the International Women's Day cruise nearly as soon as it was announced in November 2019; Joanne Braz, a recreational boater with a family history of maritime jobs, got wind of it before passing word along to the rest of the group. After years of dealing with misogyny and outright harassment out on the water, they were all reveling in the moment.

“It’s been hard for women to advance in the maritime industry,” Cuddyer said. “I wanted to support that.” So excited was Cuddyer that throughout the cruise, she monitored the movement of the ship itself, running the length of it several times to watch as Captain Kate pulled away from port. She'd already logged nearly three miles on her pedometer as we left Fort Lauderdale.

“It’s really a worthwhile cause, and I’m so blown away by it—by the caliber of the women, by the fact that they’re there,” Moore said. “This is what we’ve worked for for 40 years, [by] telling women, ‘you can do this.’ Things are changing, and being able to see this huge change for an industry that we’ve been so interested in all our lives—it’s thrilling.”

Another member of the group, Captain Deborah Jacobs Purves, now an artist based part-time out of Boone, North Carolina, had dyed a chunk of her silvery hair suffragette purple to commemorate the occasion. (Her Etsy shop, She Shellz by Captain Deb , trades in nautically inspired jewelry, and her toes are perennially painted red and green, for port and starboard.) At 27, with no schooling, she said, she became the first woman licensed to sail from Puerto Rico . Captain Genie Williamson, who got her license in 1979, and enjoys commandeering smaller, 60-foot vessels—better for working with students and minimal crew, she says—was there, too.

The cruise brought the past into conversation with the present. Elizabeth Wakesho Marami, a now-32-year-old Kenyan woman who was set to join Celebrity Edge in May as a Second Officer, was also on board the ship as a guest. (She had previously served as a Third Officer at another cruise company; because of COVID-19, her start date was pushed to July 2020.) She snagged the role after sliding into Captain Kate’s DMs looking for a fresh dose of motivation, and instead found herself with a job offer. She also runs her own blog and Instagram account, Against the Tide , where she shares the stories of other seafaring women.

Celebrity Cruise International Women's Day

The cruise drew seafaring women who were thrilled to witness the all-female bridge and officer team. From left: Captain Deborah Jacobs Purves, Captain Patti Moore, Captain Genie Williamson, Second Officer Elizabeth Wakesho Marami, Joanne Braz, and Captain Carol Cuddyer.

The event was, it became clear, a venue for seafaring women to come together, to share in their struggles and celebrate their successes. When I asked Lutoff-Perlo that weekend whether this same cruise might happen again, she demurred—she didn’t want to muddle the memory of the event by trying to recreate it. A year on, as COVID-19 has wreaked havoc across the world, the cruise, for all its happy connotations, has come to serve as something of a bittersweet mile-marker; it was the last time Lutoff-Perlo would step onto a ship until this past January, when she finally toured Celebrity Apex, the brand's newest addition . “It was such a special moment in time, and even though we've been going through this over the last 11 months, it doesn't diminish the magnitude of it and the specialness of it in any way at all," she says.

When I called up Williamson at her home in Sarasota recently to talk about the experience, she had just received her first vaccination shot. She's had a Celebrity Cruises trip from Boston to Quebec City booked that she's now had to cancel twice—a circumstance that makes her look back at last year's cruise all the more fondly. “I miss [being on the water] so much," she says. "I feel so fortunate that we got to go on that cruise, because it was the last [one] before the world changed. It was such a positive week—and just a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful trip.”

And in spite of the wrench the pandemic has thrown into the cruise industry's operations, the brand's efforts at gender equality haven't ground to a halt, either. “We are still committed to diversity and inclusion,” says Lutoff-Perlo. “We're still pushing ahead as much as we can; it's a little difficult when we're not sailing, and we don't have the need for as many people on our bridge and in certain roles as we did before. But our goals haven't changed and our focus hasn't changed.”

This past year, two of the women on that sailing were promoted, along with another three female officers in the fleet. Celebrity also partnered with the nonprofit organization Girls Who Code, whose founder, Reshma Saujani, is the Godmother for Apex , in January 2020, to add beginner coding activities on their ships as part of their STEM effort to grow the pipeline of women in the space.

“It's not only how much we do for gender equality, but also the environment that we create on board for these women to be successful,” says Lutoff-Perlo. “It's one thing to bring women into an environment that historically has not had many of them, if any of them. It's another thing to create an environment where they feel welcome and where they are nurtured, where they can succeed and get promoted—and achieve not only their personal, but their professional aspirations.”

In an industry first, Celebrity Cruises has announced that an all-female bridge and officer team will set sail to mark International Women’s Day on March 8, 2020 under its #BRIDGEthegap initiative.

It comes at a time when the industry is still heavily male-dominated, with just 2 per cent of the world’s mariners women.

CELEBRITY CRUISES CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY HAVING ACHIEVED 32 PERCENT FEMALE BRIDGE OFFICERS IN AN INDUSTRY WHERE LESS THAN 2 PERCENT OF MARINERS ARE WOMEN

MIAMI  (March 8, 2022) – With a long history of championing diversity and inclusion, Celebrity Cruises today set a new benchmark in the cruise industry, announcing that one third of its bridge officers are now female, in an industry where less than 2% of mariners are women. As a display of its commitment to equality, advancement and the accomplishments of women, the brand is changing its global “X” logo to “XX” on its social media channels in honor of the female chromosome for International Women’s Day. Celebrating all those who identify as female, this symbolic display supports this year’s #BreakTheBias international theme.  The “XX” logo was also projected onto Celebrity Beyond SM , the company’s highly anticipated luxury flagship under final construction at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France in preparation for its April 2022 debut and set to be helmed by female captain Kate McCue. When Captain Kate maneuvers Celebrity Beyond from the shipyard, she will become the first female Captain to start up a mega cruise ship and the first female Captain to “take out” a ship from Chantiers de l’Atlantique in its 160-year shipbuilding history.  Having a penchant for rising above the industry norms, Celebrity has made maritime history for its progressive thinking and barrier-breaking initiatives. In 2015, President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, a catalyst for change in the 200-year-old industry, appointed Captain Kate McCue as the first – and still only – American female captain, starting an intentional effort by the brand to attract more women to the industry and into leadership roles across its fleet.  The cruise line further captured the world’s attention on International Women’s Day 2020, when the first all-female bridge and officer team led by Captain Kate departed on a history-making sailing on board the award-winning Celebrity Edge . Made up of 26 women representing 16 different countries, the all-female bridge and leadership team reunited virtually on International Women’s Day 2021, one year after their glass ceiling-shattering achievement, to reflect on the historic sailing and discuss the challenging year that followed amidst the coronavirus pandemic.  Then, on June 26, 2021, Captain Kate led the Celebrity fleet – and the industry – back into operation when Celebrity Edge became the first cruise ship to sail with guests from a U.S. port in more than a year due to the global coronavirus pandemic. “Looking back at how far we’ve come in six years is quite extraordinary, and speaks volumes to the leadership and shared vision of the talented men and women I work with every day,”  said Celebrity Cruises president and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo. “Now, we have incredible women from 19 countries and at all levels of maritime leadership to encourage girls to consider this awe-inspiring industry that opens up the world with the transformative power of travel. We are so proud to pioneer this path and keep at this work so everyone who dreams of a career on board a cruise ship - whether they identify as male or female - encounters a new standard across the seven seas.” “Being a part of this movement, and standing beside my fellow officers both male and female, is definitely an accomplishment I’m extremely proud of. One of my greatest joys is to be able to pay it forward both by example and with opportunities for well-deserving individuals who previously may not have had chances to get their foot in the door,” said Captain Kate McCue. “I truly believe that if you can sea it, you can be it.” When Captain Kate takes the helm of Celebrity Beyond this spring, she will be surrounded by an accomplished nine-person Bridge team, including four female officers: Chief Officer Rachel Arnold (UK); Second Officer Dionysia Giapappa (Greece); Third Officer Gifty Adu Gyamfi (Ghana); and Third Officer Antonina Kolodziejczyk (Poland).   For more information on Celebrity Cruises’ work to #BridgeTheGap in the cruise industry, visit https://www.celebritycruises.com/about-us/celebrity-cares/international-womens-day .
