Milan Transport Tickets and Travel Cards

Milan Transport Tickets and Travel Cards

One-way tickets, 24 or 72-hour passes, weekly travel cards... discover all the types of ticket and transport cards available in Milan .

All the tickets and travel cards are valid for all of Milan’s means of transport: urban buses , trams , Milan Metro and urban trains.

You can purchase the transport tickets in the various metro stations, in the off-licenses and in any of Milan’s parking meters. From 2020 you'll have to load tickets onto an electronic card, RicaricaMi, of personal use.

Most useful tickets for tourists

Single ticket.

A single ticket covers areas Mi1, Mi2, and Mi3 and is  valid for 90 minutes since it is first punched into the validating machine. You can change metro lines during this time, but you cannot leave the metro station and then come back and use the same ticket . The price of a single urban ticket costs € 2 ( US$ 2.10).

24-hour travel card

The one-day travel card is valid for 24 hours since it's first punched into a validating machine. This means that if you validate your travel pass at 1:30 pm you can use the transport until 1:30 pm the next day. It covers areas Mi1, Mi2, and Mi3 and costs  € 7 ( US$ 7.50) .

72-hour travel card

The three-day travel card permits unlimited travel and is valid for 72   hours since it's first validated, costing € 12 ( US$ 12.90).

Ticket for your luggage

You'll sometimes have to buy a separate ticket for your luggage, depending on its size, and note that if you have more than one suitcase, you might not be allowed to get on the metro, tram, or bus.

The suitcases which can be carried onboard are very similar to the dimensions of the ones allowed on an airplane. The small ones (50 centimeters) are allowed on for free and the larger ones (50 x 90 centimeters) must have their own Luggage ticket. Suitcases over 90 cm are not allowed on Milan’s public transport, so you might want to think about taking another means of transport because you could be fined if your luggage is too large.

Other tickets and travel cards

10 standard tickets.

The price of 10 standard tickets is € 18 ( US$ 19.30), which saves you a little money compared to if you were to purchase 10 separate single tickets. This ticket can only be used by one person.

Weekly 2x6 ticket

This travel card is not very useful for visitors. It allows you to travel twice a day for 6 days during the same week for € 8.40 ( US$ 9).

Evening ticket

This ticket gives you unlimited access from 8 pm until the end of the service . The price of the ticket costs € 3 ( US$ 3.20).

Special tickets for the Fiera Milano (Rho Fiera)

A ticket to the Fiera Milano on Milan Metro’s line 1 costs € 2.55 ( US$ 2.70) per journey. This ticket will allow you to change lines and take other means of transport for 105 minutes after first validating it.

Travel Cards

As well as the already mentioned tickets, Milan’s public transport system also has weekly, monthly, and annual travel cards. These cards are not so useful for tourists unless you're planning on staying in Milan for over a week, as the card itself costs € 10 ( US$ 10.70).

TIP: When making online purchases, the next calendar month becomes available for selection. For instance, if you make a purchase on November 3rd, you'll be able to select December. However, if you make a purchase after November 15th, you'll have the option to buy for January instead. Therefore, if you need to top up for the current month, it's advisable to purchase an empty card and refill it at ticket vending machines or authorized ticket resellers.

In-person purchase

Go to any ATM point office. You will need:

  • a passport-sized photo

Pick up an application form  Richiesta di rilascio tessera elettronica and fill it in with your personal data. Date and sign the form. Go to a counter, pay 10€, and get your card. You can ask the operator directly to top up the monthly or yearly fare.

To skip the queue, book your call number in advance through the app .

  • Read more on the ATM website
  • the application platform for your pass

When issued, the electronic card is “empty” and should be charged with your chosen travel card. You can top up your card with a monthly pass or an annual pass :

  • At automatic machines inside metro stations
  • At any tobacconist’s or newsstand that sells transportation tickets
  • Online on the ATM website or on the ATM app and then on the dedicated machine next to the metro turnstiles

To travel within the urban area of Milano (Mi1 zone) you can choose from these 4 options:

  • monthly pass for under 27: € 22 (valid for unlimited journeys during the month of validity)
  • annual pass for under 27: € 200 (valid for unlimited journeys for one year)
  • ordinary monthly pass: € 39 (valid for unlimited journeys during the month of validity)
  • ordinary annual pass: € 330 (valid for unlimited journeys for one year)

An Urban Travel Card allows you to ride across the whole ATM urban transportation network (within the borders of the city), as well as the urban portion of the S suburban railway lines (Trenord and Passante Ferroviario) departing from Cadorna, Garibaldi, Porta Venezia, and other underground stations.

Metro stations within the urban fare limits: Molino Dorino and Sesto Marelli on line M1, Cascina Gobba and Famagosta on line M2.

Towns surrounding Milano, (e.g.San Donato, Segrate, Gessate, Rozzano, Sesto San Giovanni, Corsico, Novate Milanese, Monza) are out of the urban fare: a suburban pass must be purchased depending on the number of zones travelled (from Mi1 up to Mi9 zones).

Go to ATM Fare System website  and select Zones and fares tables from the menu to see all the travel passes available (annual or monthly passes for young people under 26; weekly, monthly or annual ordinary passes).

You can always book a slot and show up at an ATM point to choose the right pass for you with the help of an operator.

At the start of your journey and every time you change the vehicle, you should tap your card on the electronic card reader at ticket barriers in the metro stations or on board of buses and trams.

The readers can also sell tickets to credit card holders: to avoid unwanted purchases, keep separate your pass from your bank cards when tapping it!

To obtain a new card please go to an ATM Point with a valid ID.

  • If your card is stolen, you should report it to the police and show the report at the ATM counters.
  • If you lose your card, you will need to fill in a lost card declaration form available at ATM Points and hand it to ATM staff.

In both cases, there is a charge of 15€ for the issue of a new card.

Use the app to get live updates on the transportation network status, and to grab your call number for the ATM Point counters to get your pass.

To book your call number for a new card, click on the "ATM Point" button, then choose "Ordinary services", "New card request", choose date and time slot, and confirm until you get your ticket. Show up some minutes in advance at the ATM point, skip the queue and your number will appear on the call screens at the time of the booking.

You can use the app to book a line ticket also for other operations, listed in the "type of appointment " menu, e.g. buying a replacement card in case of loss or theft.

Milan Public Transport - Tickets and Travel cards

Milan is a vibrant city with several attractions and historical landmarks. Getting to these places is made easier with the Milan public transport. If you are in Milan for a short visit or staying here for a longer duration, buying a ticket or travel pass is necessary to use the metro, trams, and buses provided for public transport. The tickets and travel passes are offered by Azienda Trasporti Milanesi (ATM), the organization that manages public transport within Milan. ATM is owned by the Milan municipality (Comune di Milano) and through its subsidiaries, it even operates the Copenhagen underground.

What are the various available tickets/travel cards?

There is a wide variety of tickets and travel passes available. These passes/cards range from an ordinary ticket valid for 90 minutes up to an annual travel card of 1 year. Before going into further details about each available card type, we need to know about the fare zones in Milan. There are 8 fare zones roughly concentric in shape representing Milan and neighboring municipalities. With the urban zone representing the city center, other zones are named Mi3, Mi4, and so forth, up to Mi9. There is an increment in fare as we move further up the zones. To keep it simple, only Urban zone fares are discussed going forward. More details on the entire fare system are on this ATM webpage .

  • Ordinary ticket lasting 90 minutes from the time of first validation and costs 2.20€
  • Daily pass valid for 24 hours from first validation and costs 7.60€
  • 3-day pass valid for 3 consecutive days from the day of first validation up to the end of service on the third day. Costs 13€
  • Weekly travel card valid only from Monday to Sunday of the same week and costs 18.50€ (for the Mi1-Mi3 zone)
  • Monthly travel card valid for one calendar month and costs 39€
  • Annual travel card valid for 12 consecutive months and costs 330€

Which ticket/travel pass should I buy?

So this will be mainly based on the duration and how often one uses public transport. If you are in Milan for a short visit of 1 day or a few hours, go with the ordinary ticket. If you plan on using public transport multiple times throughout the day, then the daily pass might be the better option.

For anything more than a day, a travel pass is worth your while. For a short trip of 2-3 days in Milan, a 3-day pass would work out best. As you can avoid buying the ordinary ticket multiple times due to its limited validity of 90 minutes. If the travel duration is slightly longer than 3 days, a weekly pass might be a good choice. Although, be aware that even if the weekly travel card is purchased mid-week, say on a Wednesday. It will only last up to the Sunday of the same week. Depending on the duration and day of the week, it is useful to decide between a 3-day pass and a weekly travel card.

On the other hand, if you are in Milan for more than 2 weeks, the monthly travel card works best. Likewise, for anything more than 9 months annual travel card is preferable. Although the fares for the monthly and annual travel cards might seem high, various concessions and subsidies are available. The discounts on travel cards in Milan are based on age and income. Children under the age of 14 are allowed to travel for free on public transport. For people under the age of 27, the monthly and annual travel card costs 22€ and 200€ respectively. Give this page a read if you want to know more about the reduced-rate travel card in Milan. It might be particularly useful if you are a student in Milan who uses public transport for your daily commute.

Why do I need a travel card?

The travel pass would save you the hassle of buying a ticket before every journey. It is convenient and allows you to travel at any time. The travel card gives you access to buses, trams, and the metro. As long as you are in the Urban zone and the travel card is purchased for the same zone, it can also be used for accessing suburban railways. Also (mainly 😄), since public transport in Milan is not free. Although in all seriousness, transportation costs in Milan are comparable or slightly lower than its counterparts like other major cities around Europe.

How do I get a travel card?

Travel cards are charged to an electronic card. The electronic card can be obtained from ATM points, newsstands, tobacconists (Tabacchi), and bars. ATM points are designated offices within the subway stations and help carry out most operations. They are currently in the metro stops - Duomo, Centrale, Cadorna, Loreto, Garibaldi, Romolo, and Zara. Advice would be to book an appointment beforehand through the ATM app at any of these ATM points closest to you. The Electronic card is issued after filling in the Card Request Form along with a passport photo and valid ID proof. At ATM points, electronic cards are handed in immediately while there is a waiting time (around 2 weeks) if submitted through other outlets. The electronic card is valid for 4 years and costs 10€.

The electronic card obtained is empty to start with and will have to be charged based on your travel plan of choice like monthly or annual. The charging of electronic travel cards in Milan is through ATM points, automatic ticket machines at the stations, and other outlets like newsstands and tobacconists. Do not forget to validate your ticket before the start of your journey. Without stamping, tickets are considered invalid and could lead to fines. Likewise, travel cards are validated through the totem poles that are present in every station before using them the first time of their recharged plan. In case the electronic card is lost or stolen, a new card will be issued for a charge of 15€, and upon presenting a valid ID document.

Now that you know of various available tickets and travel cards for using Milan’s public transport, I hope it makes your planning and commutes much easy. If you are in Milan for a short visit then purchasing a single ticket or daily pass is a good choice. However, buying individual tickets each time you wish to travel becomes an inconvenience over long periods. Furthermore, having a travel card will be a better option economically for frequent users.

  • No queue to buy tickets
  • Please note: contactless payment is only accepted on ATM transport services

Travel by metro

  • Touch your card on the re ader to open the orange ticket gate at the start of your journey
  • Touch out at the end of your journey to exit

Always use the same device or contactless card to touch in and out at the orange ticket gates (even where validation to exit is not required). If one reader doesn’t work, try another one. Every station is equipped with at least two gates enabled for contactless payments.

In Milan, on buses, trams and trolleybuses

If you travel only within Milan or between Milan and zone Mi3:

  • Touch your card on the reader when you board
  • Touch out at the end of your journey only if you travel on one of these routes: 121, 130, 140, 165, 166, 327. The cheapest fare will be applied

Just like other surface lines, you don't need to touch out at the end of your journey.

Always touch out beyond Milan urban fare limits

If you travel

  • between Milan and another municipality
  • outside the Milan urban area, within other municipalities

always touch you card on the reader at the start and use the same card to touch out at the end of your journey. If you don't, the cheapest fare cannot be applied.

How to get the cheapest rate

  • Use the same card at every transfer.
  • Always use the same card especially if you make several journeys during the day. After the fourth one, the system applies the daily fare.
  • Touch out if you travel on one of the surface lines listed above.
  • Touch out at the end of a journey made beyond the Milan urban area.

Contactless cards, Apple and Samsung Pay

  • Contactless bank cards issued by Mastercard, Visa, American Express, Maestro and VPay can be used to pay as you go for travel. Prepaid Postepay cards issued by VISA and PagoBancomat debit cards are not accepted.
  • You can use mobile payments ( Apple Pay , Samsung Pay and so on) with devices associated with a bank card such as phones, watches or other smart devices.

Please let us check

You just need to show the card or the device that you used. All our ticket controllers are equipped with a digital device that verifies the transaction and makes sure the passenger is eligible to travel.

When are charges applied?

The charges might be applied a few days after the date of your journey depending on your bank’s transaction procedures.  You can see the charges in the reserved area of the ATM website (you have to sign up).

:: FAQ - 1) Travelling using contactless payment

What happens if i don’t tap out when leaving the station.

The system calculates the correct fare only if you tap in and tap out when leaving. If you don’t tap out the system recognizes where you entered but not where you exited or vice versa, therefore an extra cost will be applied which will be the maximum fare for where you entered to the furthest station. You must tap out when you leave even if the barriers are open.

What happens if, before getting off above ground transport, I don’t tap out?

On some lines running in Milan and surroundings, you must tap both in and out before getting off, this is because the fares can change depending on zones travelled. If you don’t tap in when getting on and tap out when getting off, the system can’t understand the trip travelled therefore cannot apply the best fare. In the paragraphs at the beginning of this page you can find a list of the lines that you must both tap in and tap out before getting off.

What happens if I change device during my journey?

The system can’t calculate the best fare because it is not able to understand that the journey has been done by the same person. Always use the same device for the whole journey: the same physical card, the same digital card, the same phone or the same watch.

What happens if after one try the barriers do not open?

Check the color of the card reader’s light, if it is red then it could be one of the cases named in the FAQs.

Do you need to register to pay contactless?

No, you don’t need to register but we do suggest that you register on atm.it and save your card: from your personal area you can see all payments and details from your trips.

Can I use the same card for other people to travel?

No. Any card or device can allow only one passenger at a time.

:: FAQ - 2) How much does a ticket cost?

Are there any commissions.

No, no commissions, you only pay the fare for the journey .

How is the ticket cost calculated?

The contactless system applies the cheapest fare. If you only take one trip , the system applies the cost of one ordinary ticket (fare based on how many zones travelled). If you take more trips within the duration of the ticket, the system will still apply the ordinary ticket price and nothing else. E.g., If you take multiple trips in the Mi1-Mi3 zone within 90 minutes, the system will apply the €2.20 fare because the fare permits multiple journeys so long as they are within the 90-minute ticket duration. If you take multiple trips throughout the day, from the fourth trip the system will apply the day fare as opposed to 4 standard tickets.

Does the cheapest fare get applied on a weekly and monthly basis as well?

No. For now, the system calculates the cheapest fare on a daily basis (24 hours from your first journey).

What is the daily fare?

7.60 € if travelling in zones Mi1-Mi3. You can find the daily fares for the other zones HERE .

:: FAQ - 3) Paymets

When is the payment taken.

The cost of the ticket is calculated the day after. The payment could be taken up to three days later (depending on the card circuit or bank). Extra costs (those applied when the system hasn’t been used correctly) are taken at least 4 days later.

Where can i see the payments?

On this site on your personal area. There you can see your payments and find out what they refer to by looking at the payment detail by the cost. Alternatively, you can see payments on your bank statement, they can be recognized by the payment detail “Cless Ticket ATM Milano”.

FAQ - 4) Extra costs or unknown payments

What is an extra cost.

It is a cost that is applied when the system cannot understand the exact journey taken during your trip.

In what cases are extra cost payments taken?

CASE 1. You used a card at the start but not the end of your journey , or you used one device to start your journey but a different device to finish your journey . In these cases the system cannot understand your exact journey therefore the maximum fare is applied as if you travelled to the furthest point from where you started your journey. CASE 2. On the metro you didn’t tap in when starting your journey but you tapped out upon leaving . In this case, the system cannot understand the starting station, therefore a total cost of 5€ is applied and taken in two separate payments on different days: 2.20€ (ticket cost) + 2.80€ (extra cost)

When and how are the extra cost payments taken?

Extra cost payments are taken at least 4 days after the journey in a separate payment . For this reason you will see more payments for the same journey.

Where can i see the extra costs paid?

In your personal area on this site , if you have registered your card. You can recognize the extra cost by reading the payment description. If you have registered your card in your personal area on this site, you can recognize the extra cost by reading the description by the payment amount. Alternatively, you can go the an ATM Point with your card or device used alongside an ID card to be able to see your payments.

How much are the extra costs?

For the Metro

  • +1.30 € if you tapped in at a station in Milan but didn’t tap out.
  • Between +0.50 and +1.80 € if you tapped in at a station outside of Milan but didn’t tap out.
  • 5 € If you didn’t tap in when entering. The total is the sum of two payments on different days: 2.20€ (ticket cost) + 2.80€ (extra cost)

For trams, buses and trolleybuses

  • +0.50 € on lines travelling in zones Mi1-Mi3, if the journey finishes within zone Mi3
  • between +0.40 and +1.30 € on these lines: 121, 130, 140, 165, 166, 327

I payment was taken for 1.30 euro for a journey that i didn’t take! Why?

Most likely it is an extra cost for a previous journey taken even days earlier that you didn’t tap out when leaving. To learn more check the answer above. If you have registered your card in your personal area, you can see the extra cost by reading the payment details. Alternatively, you can go to an ATM Point with the card used and your ID card to be able to check your payments.

An unrecognized payment was taken and i haven’t travelled recently! Why?

Most probably it’s an extra cost from a journey taken even days ago which when entering or exiting you didn’t tap your card at the metro or when getting off above ground transport. Not following the steps, the system applies an extra cost as it cannot determine the correct journey taken. If you have registered your card on this site you can recognize the extra cost by reading the payment description next to the amount. Alternatively, you can go to an ATM Point with the card used and your ID card to be able to check your payments.

I received an SMS from my bank saying that ‘’a payment of XX euro has been authorized”. Why?

It is a pre-authorization payment by the banking circuit and not dependent on our system. Depending on the circuit, amounts between 2 and 10 euros. The circuit with then take the correct fare based on it’s operations (payment cancellations/refunds…)

Why doesn’t my card work?

  • The card isn’t part of the accepted circuits
  • The card is insolvent (the account doesn’t have enough funds for the transaction, the card is blocked or other reasons)
  • The card has expired
  • The card is part of the accepted circuits but it isn’t contactless .

FAQ - 5) Virtual cards on phones and watches

Do payments work using apple pay, samsung pay and other banking services on phones, watches and other devices.

Yes, the system works with all devices where a card has on an accepted circuit has been registered. WARNING: Physical cards and virtual cards cannot be swapped during the same trip. You must use the same device (referring to the same card) if you want the cheapest fare.

Can i register my virtual card in the personal area of the ATM website?

No, this isn’t possible.

How can i see ticket payments made using a virtual payment (Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, etc.)?

Currently it’s not possible to do so via your personal area on this website (It will eventually be possible once standards have been defined). You can request ticket payments at one of our ATM Points. Remember to bring your ID and the device used to pay.

FAQ - 6) Where can and can’t you pay using contactless payments

What public transport can i pay using contactless.

All ATM lines that have been equipped with contactless readers (metropolitan, bus, tram, and trolleybuses) across all of the STIBM fare area. Contactless is not accepted on other operator’s services like Trenord trains, nor railway lines (S lines).

Can i use contactless payments on railway S lines?

No, contactless payments for now, are not in service on S lines, trains that pass the railway or trains of Trenord or other operators. So, if you entered the metropolitan using a contactless payment and you need to change to get one of the S lines at one of the interchanging stations (Porta Venezia, Repubblica, Garibaldi or Dateo) you must exit the metropolitan tapping out at the contactless barriers, then buy a new ticket for the S lines.

:: FAQ - 7) Ticket checks and fines

What do i do if a ticket inspector asks to see my ticket.

You simply show them the card or device used when tapping in.

Who says that when checking my card that data privacy isn’t violated?

The ticket inspector’s handhelds maintain the anonymity of the cards data .

::FAQ - 8) Sicurity

Is there a risk that my card could be cloned.

No. Our card readers are all POS certified by the authorizing banks . Our system satisfies all security standard required for any contactless payment operation.

In no way does ATM memorize the card or card owner’s details.

:: FAQ - 9) Refunds

I got to my destination but the turnstile is broken, how do i get out.

If a turnstile doesn’t work, try using a different one. All metropolitan stations have at least two contactless turnstiles to leave.

All contactless turnstiles were broken and i left without tapping out. Will I have to pay an extra cost?

When you don’t tap out an extra cost is automatically applied . To ask for a refund please read the answer to the question below.

When can you get a refund?

When turnstile breakdowns or contactless reader problems have happened that prohibit you finishing your journey. In these cases, you need to go to an ATM Point with the card and an ID card to verify the case.

How can i request a refund?

  • Bring the card and the device used to travel to an ATM Point or the customer support office in viale Stelvio 2. Our staff can check travel dates and times to check payments.
  • If the payments are unrecognized, fill in this form . You will be contacted by our Customer relations office.

We recommend keeping all documents and details from your journey: ATM doesn’t keep contactless card details.

What to i need to bring to ask for a refund?

  • A valid ID card
  • The card and device used (the card has to be in the name of the person asking for the refund)

How is the refund paid?

Via bank transfer or tickets.

Transport in Milan: How to move around the city

' src=

Milan is a big city and moving by car, especially during rush hour, can be a really stressful experience. Luckily, there are other ways to move around, most of them provided by the Milan Transport Company (ATM).

The first paragraphs are dedicated to the public transport (subway, public buses, trams, etc..) with information about hours, prices, discounts for students and so on… But you can also find information about bike sharing, car and scooter sharing, taxi and also airports… In short, everything you should know about transport in Milan!

The Milan Metro can’t be compared to those of the biggest European cities like London, Paris, Berlin or Madrid. Nonetheless, it is t he most efficient one in Italy.

It is made up of four lines (MM1 red, MM2 green, MM3 yellow and the MM5 purple), plus a rail link made up of 5 suburban lines (S1-S2-S5-S6-S13) covering more than 80 km. Two metro lines are under construction and should be completed in the next few years.

The Milan Metro is opened every day from 6.00 am till 00:30 am.

SURFACE TRANSPORT

In addition to the metro, Milan has a good bus & tram network system serving both the urban and suburban areas. The metro is the fastest and usually the best option, but surface transport is comfortable and efficient especially for short distances.

Many people prefer it also because it allows them to enjoy many of the city sights.

TICKETS AND FARES

Tickets can be purchased at ATM Points, ticket machines and authorized bars and newsstands. You must validate your ticket at the machines onboard. Be careful, you can’t purchase tickets on board , so you need to get one before you enter.

If you are buying it for a metro ride you can print it with your PNR at an automatic machine in any metro stations.

NIGHT TRANSPORT

Since 2011 Milan has been served by a night bus network which is active from 0:30 am to 6 am. Many other bus lines allow passengers to move around the city when the regular daily transport is closed.

Three lines replace the metro serving all the stations and work all week and weekend nights. (M1, M2, M3). In addition, N90, N91, N25 and N26 travel by night every day of the week including weekends.

The other lines follow the route of their daily counterparts and they just work on the weekends (Friday and Saturday). These are N6, N15, N24, N27, N42, N50, N54, N57, N72, N80 and N94. Y ou can use night transport with only one ticket which you can buy from parking meters during the weekend. Travel Cards are also allowed.

Find more info in this map.

Uber is a famous American drivers service but in Milan is not a common service. Due to the fact that only NCC ( Noleggio Con Conducente ) drivers are able to enlist as Uber drivers, there aren’t nearly as many of them around as you might have expected to be. The cheapest solution is to take a taxi (sharing one will be the very best option).

Taxis are the most comfortable but also expensive way to move around Milan. Base fares can vary depending on the hour and the day of the week. Weekdays from 6 am till 9 pm it’s 3,40 €, Saturday, Sunday and holidays 5,60 €, while at night (from 9 pm till 6 am) it’s 6,70 €.

The basic rates are 1,12 € per km and 29,19 € per hour.

If getting a taxi is the only option you have we suggest you try to find someone to share it with.

BIKE SHARING

Since 2008 Milan has had a public bicycle transport system designed for short distances- called BikeMi. You can pick up a bike at one of the almost 300 stations around the city and leave it at any other station. The service is fully automatized and works 24/7. To use BikeMi you need a subscription that can be purchased online at www.bikemi.com , at any ATM point, or for only daily and weekly subscriptions you can call (toll-free number 800 80 81 81) and use your credit card or wap ( wap.bikemi.it ). The fares for the subscriptions are:

  • Annual: 36 € (12 € if you already have an ATM Travel Card and you are Under 27)
  • Weekly: 9 €
  • Daily: 4,50 €

With your subscription you can use a traditional bike anytime you want for free, for up to 30 minutes for each ride. After the first 30 minutes, a fare of 0,50 € for every 30 minutes is applied, for a maximum limit of 2 hours. After that, it will cost you 2 € per hour.

For electric bikes , a part of the annual subscription, you would pay 0.25 € for the first 30 minutes, 0,50 € for the second half an hour, 1 € for the third one, and 2 € for the fourth one.

Note that exceeding the 2-hour maximum limit 3 times blocks the subscription.

If you want a bike for a long term rental you can have one with Swapfiets . This company offers traditional and electric bikes and allows you to use them for one or more months and receive technical assistance for free at any moment.

CAR-SHARING

In Milan, there are different companies that offer a car-sharing service. You can rent a car with a smartphone app and pay it per minute just for the duration of your trip. It is halfway between car rental and a taxi ride and it’s widely used in Milan, in fact, you can even enter in the “Area C” and park on yellow and blue zones without additional costs . From 2015 you can also rent a temporary scooter from Enjoy with the same process of renting a car.

The most famous car-sharing companies are:

  • E-vai (electric cars)

SCOOTER-SHARING

If you are looking for a scooter the most famous sharing companies are:

ELECTRIC SCOOTER-SHARING

During the last years, we assisted at a new way to move around the city, using the e-scooters. In Milan you can find many companies offering this service as a sharing one:

  • Bird Milano
  • Bit Mobility
  • Helbiz Milano
  • Wind Mobility

DRIVING AROUND

If you want to use a car, keep in mind that in the center there is a congestion charge named “area C” . The fee is 5 € and it’s applied to every vehicle entering the city center on weekdays from 7.30 am to 7.30 pm . The access is free only for hybrid or electric vehicles and scooters. When you have to park your car, remember that white lines mean “free parking”; yellow zones are reserved for residents, while blue lines denote “pay and display” : pay for a ticket from the dispensing machine and display it clearly in the front windscreen.

Milan is served by three airports: Linate, Malpensa and Orio al Serio. Linate is the closest to the city center and you can reach it by bus (73 or X73) with a simple ATM ticket.

Malpensa is the second biggest airport in Italy and it’s located in Varese province. You can reach it by coach from Central Station (10€) or by train from Cadorna Station (Malpensa Express one way: 13€, round trip 20€, you can buy the ticket here ).

Orio al Serio is located in Bergamo province and it’s famous for its great offer of low-cost flights. You can get there by coach from Central Station (10€).

You can book your ticket to (and from) the airport online easily from the Milan Airport Transfer page here.

In the metro and on some buses you can pay directly with cards and contactless devices . Girls and boys under 14 ride free on Milan’s public transport.

  • Ordinary ticket (2.20 €) Valid for 90 minutes from the first validation with unlimited bus, tram and metro usage in three areas of the city  (Mi1 – Mi3) and 21 neighouring cities. Rho Fieramilano is included in the ticket fare. You can make more trips on surface vehicles and even on the subway by entering, exiting and re-entering the turnstiles.
  • Evening ticket (3 €) Unlimited bus, tram and metro usage from 8pm until end of service.

Bus drivers are not allowed to sell bus tickets. Owners of an Italian SIM card can  text a message to the number 48444 containing the word  ATM to get a regular ticket (2.20 euros).

For more information regarding Milan’s public transport system, please refer to  ATM – Azienda Trasporti Milanesi: www.atm.it Open daily 7.30am-7.30pm. Tel: +39 800 808181

Don’t throw your ticket!

Remember that underground tickets should be validated two times: before entering the underground line and after the ride.

If you want to know the best way to reach the places in which you are interested, try Giro Milano website , while if you’re experiencing problems getting around Milan with public transportation (strikes or doubts) you can tweet your questions to the customer care service @atm_informa  (Mon-Fri, 7am-8pm). They also tweet real time news on ATM services. Finally, if you need to get on the Malpensa Express it’s better if you check for strikes on Trenord’s Twitter account  @Trenord_Press .

Ratings and Reviews

It is a good start, unfortunately only sells tickets for traveling within the city limits.

The Giromilano section is great, but once you've found out which route to take... you can only buy tickets to travel within the city limits, which can easily bought at any vending machine. The App does not allow to purchase all the other tickets (extra-urbani) which are rather difficult to find.

Essential for Milan

This is the best public transportation app I’ve ever used in the States and abroad. With this app, there’s no need to purchase paper tickets for street level tram travel (show inspectors app screen to prove valid time remaining). For underground metro, we used the PNR codes to print out physical tickets or used the QR scanner via iPhone to use directly at the turnstiles. The journey planner provided accurate navigation routes. The app links directly to PayPal or credit card, which saved us from fishing for loose change every time we used public transportation The instructions in English are accurate and thorough. I only wish American public transportation authorities would develop a similar and effective app. This is essential for travel in Milan.

So you need to register on a mobile phone with email and phone, dig into your junk folder to verify the address, open a web browser to do that, then login again in the app. Choose from a badly described ticket options, which then moves you to a bank transaction page with too many fields, which doesn’t remember details, so you have to re-enter each time. The only nod to 2022 is the FaceID login, everything else is from the dawn of the internet, slow, not scaling, not using anything like apple/google logins/payment options, saving tickets to wallets, opening verification links in the app and not browsers, collecting information it doesn’t use like a phone number.

Along with much of Europe, Italy and its vendors and restaurants are moving quickly toward cashless payments in 2023. Still, cash will come in handy if you want to leave a tip for exceptional restaurant service or if you want to purchase local produce at your neighbourhood market. Some taxi drivers may not accept digital payments. Some shops even offer discounts - or sconto - for paying in cash.

Monito's guide to ATMs in Italy will help you find the best ATMs to use in Rome, Florence, and elsewhere, and what fees you may be charged. We will also detail out a few debit cards and multi-currency cards like Revolut , which I have used to avoid unnecessary charges when using ATMs on my travels in Italy.

How to Find ATMs in Italy

ATMs — called bancomat — in Italy can be found at airports, touristic centres, or banks in cities and towns all across the country.

The best way to find machines that accept your foreign debit cards and credit cards in Italy is to use an online ATM locator for Maestro and Mastercard , Visa , American Express , and Discover (Credit cards in Italy should work so long as you have a 4-digit PIN code).

Now, let's have a look at the main Italy cash machine providers below:

Free ATMs to Use in Italy

Italian bank branches host ATMs machines. BNL (Banca Nazionale del Lavoro) is the only Italian bank that currently participates in the Global ATM Alliance , which is a global network of banks that waive international ATM access fees.

For free ATM withdrawals in Italy, find a participating BNL ATM branch here:

  • BNL (Banca Nazionale del Lavoro) Global Alliance ATM locator (free)

Italian Bank ATMs

Other Italian banks will charge cash withdrawal fees to tourists and other users outside their ATM network. Check if your home bank is connected to a bank network in Italy. For example, Unicredit is an international bank, active in 13 countries, that may offer privileged ATM access to non-Italian Unicredit customers.

To find ATMs in Rome, ATMs in Florence, and others across the country, have a look at these locators:

  • Unicredit ATM locator
  • Intesa Sanpaolo ATM locator
  • Crédit Agricole Italia ATM locator
  • Banco BPM ATM locator

Avoid Euronet ATMs in Italy

Euronet is a widespread ATM network throughout Europe that often places its ATMs in city centres and near touristic areas. While convenient, these ATMs are notorious for charging higher usage fees than banks. They also lure their users into hidden exchange rate margin costs, which we will discuss how to avoid later in this article.

While these ATMs are a better option for getting euros in cash than a bureaux de change at an airport, Euronet still remains near the bottom of the totem pole of recommendations by Monito experts.

What Are the ATM Fees in Italy?

When you withdraw ( ritiro in Italian) cash from ATMs in Italy, you will be charged a usage fee unless you are a client of the ATM's bank network. In addition, you can be charged other sneaky fees. Before we learn how to avoid these ATM fees, let's quickly walk through what they are.

ATM fees in Italy will come in any combination of the following three ways:

  • Basic cash withdrawal fee
  • Currency conversion fee, or ‘ exchange rate margin ’
  • Dynamic currency conversion fee

1 — Cash Withdrawal Fee

As stated earlier, you should not be charged this fee if you withdraw Euros from a Global ATM Alliance member, like BNL.

However, if you withdraw from any other Italian bank or from a private ATM operator, such as Euronet , then you should expect to be charged this fee.

2 — Currency Conversion Fee, or ‘Exchange Rate Margin’

The exchange rate margin is a hidden fee that applies when travellers spend with non-local currency (i.e. using your debit card linked to your British (£) bank).

At any given time, there is a so-called “ mid-market exchange rate ” — this is the real exchange rate that you can see on Google, xe.com, or here on Monito. The local provider — who is taking your pounds, for example, and giving you back Euros — will rarely use this rate. Instead, they may do the math at a rate of 1% or 3% higher than the market rate . They’ll keep the difference .

Many Italian ATMs at banks will exchange your currency at an exchange rate around 1% weaker than the real mid-market rate . Euronet will often exchange your currency at an even weaker rate.

Revolut: Best Way to Get Cash in Italy

A reliable option for avoiding currency conversion fees is to open a multi-currency account and get yourself a travel card. Withdraw up to $400 monthly without being charged ATM usage fees from Revolut (though third-party ATM fees and weekend surcharges may apply).

3 — Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC)

dcc dynamic currency conversion

A DCC is a special kind of currency conversion fee that allows you to complete a transaction in your home billing currency instead of the local currency (€) — and this fee is always optional .

When you make a purchase from a local Italian merchant, this fee will be charged by your card company like Visa or Mastercard. When withdrawing from an ATM, this fee is charged by the ATM operator.

The exchange rate they will charge is not only higher than the market rate but is also often significantly worse than a traditional bank’s exchange rate (we’ve seen margins of up to 8% and 10%).

The long story short: always choose to pay in the local currency . In the case of Italy, this is Euros (EUR).

Should I Pay in Local Currency (€) or My Home Currency in Italy?

If you have ever travelled to a country that didn't use your home country's currency, you've probably been prompted by ATMs and payment machines to choose to pay in either the local currency or your home currency.

As we will discover in this article, you should always choose to pay in the local currency — Euros (EUR), for the case of Italy .

3 Tips When Using an ATM in Italy

While ATMs at well-established banks are usually transparent about their fees, other operators deliberately use confusing layouts and wordings to charge you more. ATM fees can be frustrating to understand especially if communicated by a machine in a foreign language.

To keep your travels as stress-free as possible, we have three simple tips for you to keep in mind before you handle transactions in cash.

Italy Amalfi Coast

Tip #1: Pay in the Local Currency (€) When Withdrawing From ATMs in Italy

As stated before — pay in the local currency ( € ) and avoid paying in your home currency.

If you're a frequent traveller, then you'll be familiar with paying at a shop, restaurant, or ATM, and being presented with a choice: Pay with the local currency or your home currency. If you chose to give your home currency to Italian merchants or ATMs, then they will apply the dynamic currency conversion (DCC) to convert that into Euros.

This percentage is almost always higher than the exchange rate that would apply if you had paid in the local currency (€).

Merchants are often unaware of what a DCC even is, as the profit margin will go into the pockets of the ATM operator or your card company. Be aware that you don't need to be travelling abroad to encounter DCC fees. You can often find them when shopping online or even when making PayPal payments.

Companies that offer multi-currency card services also include Revolut , Monzo , and Monese , which operate across most of the globe and in the world's most used currencies. Be sure to check our 2023 review to discover whether these services might make sense for you for your next trip abroad.

Chianti Vineyards in Tuscany, Italy

Tip #2: Don’t Use Bureaux de Change as an Alternative

Bureaux de change kiosks, whether at airports or in city centers, will charge any combination of fixed fees, poor exchange rates, and commission fees. We once found that Travelex Champs-Élysées, bureaux de change in Paris, charged a 16.6% margin when exchanging 500 US dollars into Euros.

ATMs often remain a better option than bureaux de change to obtain cash. Even still, Italian ATMs will apply exchange rate margins to your cash withdrawals.

This is why we recommend using a travel card to get cash. They are built to avoid currency conversion fees.

Tip #3: Use a Multi-Currency Card Instead of a Traditional Card

Just because you have a bank that waives foreign ATM fees does not mean that it also waives exchange rate margins . Plan ahead by getting a travel card , which gives you the live market exchange rate.

There are usually three types of travel cards: prepaid travel cards, debit travel cards, and credit travel cards.

Types of Travel Cards

  • Debit Cards: Innovative digital platforms like Revolut , Wise , or N26 offer travel debit cards that have a multi-currency function. They will normally convert your money using the real exchange rate for a one-time fee for the service. You will then be able to manage your current balance from their mobile apps. With your multi-currency cards, you can pay in the local currency like a local .
  • Credit Cards: You can also find credit cards made for international payments offering good exchange rates and low fees to withdraw money abroad. Capital One, for example, is one of the only companies in the United States that charges 0% international transaction fees when spending with their cards. However, you will pay interest on your ATM withdrawals each day until you pay them back — so try to avoid withdrawing cash with credit cards.

A reliable option for avoiding currency conversion fees is to open a multi-currency account and get yourself a travel card. Withdraw up to $400 per month without being charged ATM usage fees.

Plus, by loading Euros onto your Revolut Card prior to your trip to Italy, vendors and merchants will assume you have a local account when you present your card. The machine will never apply exchange rate margins nor will it ask you to do a dynamic currency conversion.
