Frank Skinner: 30 Years of Dirt

The veteran comic returns to the Fringe with a reliably filthy look back on his life

Andrzej Lukowski

Time Out says

This review is from the 2023 Edinburgh Fringe. ‘30 Years of Dirt’ transfers to the West End in 2024.

A more pedantic soul than Frank Skinner would probably have updated the name of this show to ‘31 Years of Dirt’ after it got postponed last year, or even ‘36 Years of Dirt’, given the title’s a reference to his stand-up career, which began in 1987.

Still, 30 years is approximately correct and (of course) a play on the lyrics to ‘Three Lions’, plus Skinner is not a pedant. Instead, he’s a formidably accomplished raconteur, whose late-blooming success, national treasure status and promise of a filthier live persona all conspire to make him still seem like a relatively fresh prospect for a man now technically past retirement age.

It’s perhaps not a surprise, though, that ‘30 Years of Dirt’ isn’t a rigorously sculpted high-concept exploration of a new area of comedy. It feels like a man with nothing to prove flexing his stand-up muscles for fun. We get a smattering of extremely loosely connected anecdotes from throughout his life, a LOT of audience interaction – he is understandably transfixed by the fact somebody has brought their eight-year-old along and plonked them on the front row – plus a smattering of meticulously worked killer puns that he drops in to show he can.

Still, if it’s laidback, it’s hardly tossed off. The section on his unease at an un-PC sermon delivered by a stand-in priest at his church feels perfectly illustrative of his longevity. He’s entirely honest about the fact he's a card-carrying Catholic, and lord knows it’s too late for him to give himself a woke makeover. But it’s his inescapable, excruciating  awareness of what a hole the priest is digging for himself that really makes the joke – Skinner may have a mouth like a sailor at times, but he’s never been about blundering around doing a bit of blue: he’s much wilier and more thoughtful than that.

Ultimately ‘30 Years of Dirt’ is not a show that’s going to change anybody’s mind about Skinner. It’s not a show in which he’s trying to break any new ground. It’s an hour of Frank Skinner having a nice time being the ruder version of Frank Skinner he’s allowed to be on stage, and I’m pretty sure that’s exactly what everyone in the room wanted (apart from the eight-year-old, who seemed to be having a legitimately bad time).

Comic legend Frank Skinner brings his critically acclaimed new show ‘ 30 Years of Dirt’  to London’s West End for seven nights only, following a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe. This is Frank’s highly anticipated return to the West End since his hit 2020 ‘Showbiz’ residency.

WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING ABOUT ‘30 YEARS OF DIRT’

“a supernatural sureness of touch…just plain funny in a way that few other comics can touch… supremely fast-witted in his interactions with the crowd…exquisitely vivid in some of his turns of phrase: you can sense Skinner the poetry lover in lines” Dominic Maxwell, The Times

“ he’s still got it… a comedy master… a masterclass in crowd work, with Skinner getting spontaneous laughs off every interaction…exquisite one-liners”

Steve Bennett, Chortle

“Skinner is never less than beadily alert…you come away happy that after 30 years Frank’s still dishing his dirt, and happier still that he can dish plenty more besides.”

Brian Logan, The Guardian

“immaculately constructed…Skinner’s crowdwork is as sharp as ever…he can spool out a yarn every bit as entertainingly as prime-era Billy Connolly.”

Bruce Dessau, Evening Standard

EDINBURGH 2023: Review: FRANK SKINNER: 30 YEARS OF DIRT, Assembly George Square

Frank Skinner proves why he is a top name in British comedy.

LATEST NEWS

Walking onto the stage to a room full of cheers and applause, Skinner quips "we'll see" which cracks up the audience. A good start.

As the show goes on Skinner simply talks us through his 30 years in the industry, telling small anecdotes here and there, all the while remembering funny little stories and jokes from time to time. It's a simple concept that proves not every comedian needs some grand narrative or over the top props to get a laugh. Sometimes just saying funny things for an hour can do the trick.

That is not to say that Skinner is not versatile, proving himself as a pro of comedy and brandishing an abundance of versatile jokes and gags. From mime to personal annecdotes to one liners to humour that is at times highly intelligent and at others ridiculously low brow.

With all of this said, it is clear that Skinner's type of humour is one that is of a certain time. Not that it is politically incorrect, but it certainly skews towards an older demographic. This is perhaps most notable when Skinner discusses how you need to be careful in comedy these days and watch what you say. He never makes any disparaging remarks but his routines on the topic seem overly simplistic, something which is made even more noticeable when you have a star like Daniel Sloss discussing the idea of cancel culture and comedy in great depth and with reverence at the very same arts festival. It just shows the difference in both generations and in humour.

With this in mind, Skinner's show probably is one that is for a slightly more narrow audience and won't attract many outsiders from his already large fan base, though for those that enjoy his work then this show is yet another night of top form comedy from one of Britain's biggest names.

Frank Skinner : 30 Years of Dirt runs at Assembly George Square until 27 August.

Frank Skinner announces 2024 tour

30 Years Of Dirt to hit the road

Frank Skinner has announced a 2024 tour of his latest stand-up show 30 Years Of Dirt.

Kicking off in Belfast’s Ulster Hall on March 12, it will follow a two-week West End residency in London’s Gielgud Theatre. It has already played a week at the Lyric Theatre

Skinner launched the show – following on from his 2019-2020 tour Showbiz – at the Edinburgh Fringe in August, having delayed it for a year because of family health issues. Read our review of the show here .

Despite the title, the 66-year-old comic has actually been a comic for 36 years, having decided to spend £400 of his last £435 booking a room at the Edinburgh Fringe in 1987.

This year Skinner was appointed an MBE by the Princess Royal for his services to entertainment.

Tickets to the tour go on sale to his mailing list tomorrow and on general sale from 10am on  Wednesday.

Frank Skinner at Assembly, Edinburgh review: thirty years of mirth

frank skinner on tour 2023

Frank Skinner is the biggest comedian doing a full run at the Edinburgh Fringe this year. So it is only fair that we open our comedy coverage with a review of his new show. As the title 30 Years of Dirt hints , there won’t be too many spoilers here as some of his finest quips are so ribald they are unprintable.

Ribald, but immaculately constructed. A routine about Ronaldo’s six-pack is both puerile and poetic. As Skinner readily admits, he tries to write clean material only for knob gags to keep poking their way in. A sophisticated literary side does poke through too though. He can slide seamlessly from seediness to an Emily Brontë reference.

He might be 66, but Skinner’s crowdwork is as sharp as ever. He eased in by sparring with a front row football fan, repeatedly returning to him as if he was getting pleasure from scratching an itch. Perhaps unsurprisingly for the Three Lions star, soccer as well as lewdness was a leitmotif. When talking about digressing he described it beautifully as “taking the ball to the corner flag”.

While his West Midlands delivery is less extravagant, he can spool out a yarn every bit as entertainingly as prime-era Billy Connolly. One stand-out story involved receiving his MBE from the Princess Royal and boasted a peerless darts joke. Further topics ranged from an awkward encounter with Sir Tim Rice to proposing to his partner and getting rejected.

Discussing the current state of humour and cancel culture he noted sagely that things are more nuanced than when he won the Perrier Award here 32 years ago. As for people being offended by him though, he feels that audiences should know what to expect by now: “if you’re vegan don’t go to the butchers.”

His routines don’t always link, but Skinner is such an engaging talker you barely spot the joins. And actually he has mellowed slightly. I watched an old Skinner set recently and his riff about sex at this Fringe is much more restrained than one he did about a similar sex act when he had a fringe of his own.

He suggested onstage that perhaps some audience members would like his set to go down really badly so that they have an anecdote to tell their friends at work. No chance. Anyone hoping for that would have left this virtuoso display of vulgarity empty-handed.

Frank Skinner: 30 Years of Dirt

Back in the west end by popular demand.

Following two sold out runs in London’s West End at the Lyric Theatre and the Gielgud Theatre, and off the back of a sold out 41-date national tour, comic legend  Frank Skinner  returns to the Gielgud Theatre in the West End this Summer with his acclaimed new stand-up show  ‘30 Years of Dirt’  for 3 weeks only from 5th August.

★★★★★ “A comedian so funny that it’s almost obscene. 30 Years of Dirt is a sparkling tour de force from a craftsman with exquisite control of his art.” - Dominic Maxwell, The Times, 8th February 2024

WHAT THE CRITCS ARE SAYING ABOUT ‘30 YEARS OF DIRT’

“Frank’s still the king of carefully crafted filth… it’s hard to think of another comic more at ease with his audience… He’s a consummate comedy craftsman – one man and his mic, no frills but plenty of thrills.” - Mark Wareham, Mail on Sunday

“Skinner is never less than beadily alert…you come away happy that after 30 years Frank’s still dishing his dirt, and happier still that he can dish plenty more besides.” - Brian Logan, The Guardian

“immaculately constructed…Skinner’s crowdwork is as sharp as ever…he can spool out a yarn every bit as entertainingly as prime-era Billy Connolly.” - Bruce Dessau, Evening Standard

“To deploy the cliché ‘he makes it look effortless’ can’t do justice to how instinctive the mechanics of stand-up are to Frank Skinner… Brilliantly spontaneous crowd work seems to arise as naturally as breathing, which he weaves seamlessly into his material. Without ever seeming to break out of natural conversation, he will build a story with pithy turns of phrase and a perfectly timed symphony of pause, build and release to have you snorting with laughter.” - Steve Bennett, Chortle

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Frank Skinner makes surprising Euros prediction – and defends Gareth Southgate

London Celebrity Sightings - July 10, 2021

Frank Skinner – the man who co-wrote the greatest football anthem of all time in Three Lions alongside David Baddiel – says he just about understands the offside rule. So he’s putting faith in the assumed expertise of Gareth Southgate this weekend.

‘It’s probably the peak of my knowledge,’ he admits to Metro.co.uk . ‘And I’m not just saying this for comic effect.’

The idea does sound comical, as Frank’s lyric ‘IT’S COMING HOME’ (and repeat) has sound-tracked the sport ever since our de facto national anthem hit the charts in 1996.

It’s not that legendary comedian and chart-topping football maestro Frank, 67, hasn’t tried to understand the beautiful game. He really has – more than most.

‘I saw my first football match in 1967 and I’ve been watching football for all that time, live and on television. I’ve read hundreds of books. I’ve read many articles. I’ve had every conversation.

‘I would say over that period, I’ve learned nothing about football. I don’t understand whenever they talk on the telly about flat back fours and three at the back and wing, I have no idea what they’re talking about.’

Gareth Southgate scratching his head

‘If I had watched someone doing origami for 60 years I’d be able to do origami. But I can’t tell you just how little football has sunk in.’

He concludes: ‘I love it, but I don’t understand it. A bit like my partner in that respect.’

So when quizzed about what he makes of the ever-criticised England manager Gareth Southgate, he suspects the lanky fella with the big job knows something we don’t.

‘Gareth Southgate has always been the sort of manager that when he takes his dogs for a walk he leaves them on the lead, and now suddenly people are shocked he’s being careful and not taking risks – but that’s who he is,’ Frank says.

‘Football fans always think, “Just attack! Just wallop the ball up the field! Let’s just score 10 goals!” and I think football professionals laugh at us for being so ignorant and having such simple views.

‘So I’m sure Gareth is thinking, “These people don’t understand the technicalities of the game. I know what I’m doing.” I think he’s pretty confident in his abilities.’

But how is Gareth doing, according to Frank…?

‘I am one of those football fans that think we should just attack,’ Frank chuckles. That’s settled then.

(And by the way, Frank predicts the result of Saturday’s quarter-final match against Switzerland is probably going to be 3 – 1. To us. Of course.)

But while Frank’s contribution to the world of football in Three Lions is a hugely impressive feat, it’s not what he’s most proud of.

‘I’m particularly proud that I managed to stay a comedian for so long because it could have been a two year or five year thing,’ he says.

Frank feels infinitely lucky to have found it. He would never have found comedy if someone hadn’t woken up one day and decided to have sex with a goat. Yes, really…

Frank Skinner with hands in the air on stage

‘I was working at a college of further education and I got sacked – or at least they didn’t renew my contract – for reasons involving someone having sex with the college goat.

‘The caretaker who owned the college goat said that he was going to have it put down because he wouldn’t drink milk from a goat someone had had sex with.

‘I mentioned this to a member of the English department and she said it was typical that the goat was getting the blame, and I said: “We should get a goat support group.” She took tremendous offence at this and they asked me to apologise, but I didn’t. And so they didn’t renew my contract.’

Thankfully, Frank got away from the goat – and the English department – and decided it was time to ‘go for it’ with his comedy. Four months later he was a professional comedian with his own TV show.

‘I spent the first 30 years of my life drifting around, not knowing what I was going to do, getting drunk, wasting a lot of time.

‘I don’t know how many people actually find a job they love. But if you do, you really want to hold on to it with both hands,’ Frank says.

Last year, Frank’s Edinburgh Fringe run of his current show 30 Years Of Dirt was his most enjoyable ever. (He’s still performing it because his shows won’t stop selling out.).

‘I saw an interview with Sylvester Stallone and someone asked him how come he was still in film. And he said: “Just keep swimming,”‘ Frank recalls.

‘He obviously didn’t mean literally swimming. He meant to just keep going. And I’m a big fan of just keep going.’

Frank Skinner is performing his critically acclaimed stand-up show 30 Years of Dirt at London ’s Gielgud Theatre for 3 weeks only from 5 th -24 th August and then nationwide from 26 th September. For tickets, visit www.frankskinnerlive.com

Tour de France 2024: How to watch the cycling Super Bowl, full schedule, livestream info and more

The 111th Tour de France begins in Florence, Italy this Saturday, June 29. The annual long-distance race will bring together some of the biggest names in cycling, including two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard, Tadej Pogačar, Primož Roglič, Remco Evenepoel, Juan Ayuso, Carlos Rodríguez, Adam Yates, João Almeida and Matteo Jorgenson. The Tour De France will cover 2,170 miles across 21 days of racing, finishing in Nice on July 21. This year's Tour will be the first ever to not finish in Paris (due to the 2024 Olympics).

Want to tune into the 2024 Tour de France (AKA the cycling Super Bowl)? Here's everything you need to know about the cycling event, including the odds of who will take home the yellow jersey in 2024, where to stream the 2024 Tour de France and more.

How to watch the Tour de France from the US:

Stream the tour de france.

Tour de France dates: June 29 - July 21

Tour de France TV channel: NBC

Tour de France streaming: Peacock

How to watch the 2024 Tour de France without cable:

Starting at just $6 a month, a Peacock subscription is the easiest way to stream live sports and events airing on NBC, including this year’s Tour de France! On top of access to the Tour de France, the streaming platform is the home of the 2024 Olympics, and the easiest way to stream most live sports and events airing on NBC. You’ll also get access to thousands of hours of shows and movies, including beloved sitcoms such as Parks and Recreation and The Office . For $12 monthly you can upgrade to an ad-free subscription which includes live access to your local NBC affiliate (not just during designated sports and events) and the ability to download select titles to watch offline.

Is there a free Tour de France livestream?

Don’t want to pay for Peacock to watch the Tour de France? UK-based streaming platform ITVX will have a free livestream of their Tour de France coverage throughout the race. To access this free livestream though, you’ll need a VPN.

To watch ITVX from the US, you’ll need to sign up for a good streaming VPN and choose a UK server. From there, you should be able to watch ITVX totally free from the US.

A VPN (virtual private network) helps protect your data, can mask your IP address and is perhaps most popular for being especially useful in the age of streaming. Whether you’re looking to watch Friends on Netflix (which left the U.S. version of the streamer back in 2019) or tune in to a boxing match this weekend without paying the PPV prices, a VPN can help you out. Looking to try a VPN for the first time? This guide breaks down the best VPN options for every kind of user .

Stream free Tour de France coverage

ExpressVPN offers “internet without borders,” meaning you can catch free coverage of the 2024 Tour de France without shelling out for Peacock. All you'll need to do is sign up for ExpressVPN, change your server location to the UK and then find free livestream coverage on one of the streaming platforms mentioned above.

ExpressVPN’s added protection, speed and range of location options make it an excellent choice for first-time VPN users looking to stretch their streaming abilities, plus, it's Endgadget's top pick for the best streaming VPN . New users can save 49% when they sign up for ExpressVPN’s 12-month subscription. Plus, the service offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, in case you're nervous about trying a VPN.

The 2024 Tour de France will cover 3,492km (2,170 miles) across 21 days of racing. The longest day of racing will be Stage 3, Piacenza to Turin, at 229km (142 miles).
