A masjid is at the heart of any local Muslim community. It provides a place for its worshippers to pray and contemplate as well as being a hub for educational programmes and other everyday services. The role of the masjid is to help people learn more about Islam and to nurture their moral and spiritual development.

By supporting a masjid you will not only earn the reward of providing a community with a house of Allah, but your Sadaqah Jariyah will continue giving benefit for generations to come in sha’ Allah.

Mosques Bring Communities Together by Offering Virtual Tours During Lockdown

This weekend, the Muslim Council of Britain is taking its flagship #VisitMyMosque Day digital, with mosques across Britain offering live virtual tours to members of the public. This will include Imams and mosque leaders sharing what they have been doing to support their local communities during lockdown, with many opening up as foodbanks, delivering hot meals to those in need and supporting their local hospitals with food donations.

Amongst venues that members of the public can visit virtually are Cambridge Central Mosque, Europe’s first Eco-Mosque, that has delivered more than 1,000 food packages to staff at the local Royal Papworth Hospital during lockdown.

In addition, Old Kent Road Mosque in South London, home to London’s oldest Nigerian Muslim community will be offering insights into the #BlackLivesMatter movement and how the mosque positively impacts on the local community, whilst some of the UK’s most northerly mosques in Inverness will be opening their doors virtually too, sharing their experiences of the pandemic and hopes for the future after lockdown.

These tours are taking place as part of the national #VisitMyMosque campaign, facilitated by the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), which would have ordinarily seen tens of thousands of visitors being welcomed by hundreds of mosques across Britain.

Harun Khan, MCB Secretary General said:

“This year, rather than communities visiting their local mosques, mosques have been visiting their local communities, through food bank collections, cooking hot meals, delivering free PPE and more.

“The role that faith communities have played in supporting the most vulnerable in society during the past three months of the coronavirus lockdown has been formidable. As the full impact of the lockdown begins to be felt, mosques and Muslim communities stand ready to continue playing their part in post-lockdown Britain.”

This year’s virtual tour programme is also in collaboration with The Great Get Together, inspired by the late MP Jo Cox, which is taking place during the same weekend. Su Moore, from The Great Get Together campaign, said,  “For this year’s Great Get Together we’re focusing on what we can do, rather than what we can’t do, so we’re delighted that we’ll be able to encourage people to take part in a virtual mosque tour over the weekend.”

Virtual mosque tours will be taking place between Friday 19 and Sunday 21 June. To book to join a tour, visit  www.visitmymosque.org

For further information, images or interviews, please call 0845 26 26 786 or email  [email protected]

  • #VisitMyMosque is facilitated by the Muslim Council of Britain, the country’s largest and most-diverse Muslim umbrella body with over 500 affiliated mosques, educational and charitable associations.
  • This year’s initiative is supported by British Muslim-led charities Penny Appeal, Euro Quality Foundation and the Aziz Foundation, and is also timed to take place at the same weekend as The Great Get Together campaign, inspired by the late MP Jo Cox
