2018 Dodge Journey

Select a year

  • Lows Cut-rate interior, poor handling, lacks driver-assist tech.
  • Verdict Practical enough for families on a budget, but not worth reaching for unless it's in the bargain bin.

What's New for 2019?

Dodge does little to make the Journey more competitive for 2019. However, the company has dropped the SXT trim and pared down the lineup to three models: SE, Crossroad, and GT. The change means more standard features and options on the entry-level Journey SE, which can now be had with the V-6 powertrain. Likewise, its front and rear ends have sportier styling as well as new fog lamps and LED taillights. All models are now available with Destroyer Gray exterior paint, among the other color choices.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2019 Dodge Journey starts at $24,740 and goes up to $35,140 depending on the trim and options.

The V-6–powered Crossroad model has 19-inch wheels, black exterior detailing, and a bright-chrome front-bumper accent, leather seating surfaces and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and three-zone automatic climate control. The Crossroad inherited these luxury features from the now-departed Crossroad Plus trim without seeing a hefty price bump, and it now represents the best value in the lineup.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Likes: Available all-wheel drive, comfortable ride on the freeway. Dislikes: Dated and sedated base four-cylinder engine, can only tow up to 2500 pounds, poor handling.

The Journey SE and Crossroad trims come with an underpowered four-cylinder engine and a four-speed automatic transmission that's best avoided. Some extra cash can score you a more powerful V-6 and six-speed automatic transmission, but even that combination lags behind the competition when it comes to acceleration. The optional V-6 engine provides enough oomph in day-to-day driving, but you have to rev it out to get it to move. An automatic transmission that's reluctant to downshift further dulls its real-world performance.

There are not many three-row crossovers that are entertaining to drive, so their ride and handling are graded on a curve. Even so, the Journey's ponderous handling and unresponsive transmission leave it far from getting a good rating from us. The last GT model we drove supposedly had stiffer suspension tuning than other trims, but we were unable to detect it. It wallowed in corners with lots of body roll and imprecise steering. The benefit of this softness, however, is a comfortable ride on the freeway. The Journey's mushy-feeling brake pedal undercuts its decent results in our 70-mph-to-zero braking test.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Neither of the Journey's two engine choices are fuel efficient. The four-cylinder engine has the worst EPA ratings among competitors with similar powertrains. The V-6 model with all-wheel drive that we tested did manage to outperform its EPA estimates in our real-world testing.

Interior, Infotainment, and Cargo

Likes: Standard three-row seating, straightforward controls, available 8.4-inch touchscreen and mobile hotspot. Dislikes: Low-quality materials, no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, less cargo space than other three-row rivals.

The Journey's interior is far from upscale, but its simple controls are user-friendly. Getting anyone to fit in the third row—even children—requires those in the second row to compromise their legroom. Cheap-feeling bits such as a plasticky shifter and hollow-sounding interior door-trim panels are especially egregious on the priciest version. Several luxury features including a power-adjustable passenger seat, cooled seats, and heated rear seats are notable in their absence from the options list.

Although every model features an easy-to-use touchscreen, the system has fewer features than many other Dodge products. Likewise, the larger screen is responsive, but we wish Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were also offered here. There's also only a single USB port up front—not great for the device-happy spawn likely to inhabit the back seats.

Practicality is one of the few areas where the Journey shines: its interior is easily configurable and it has tons of cubby storage for odds and ends, even if its total cargo capacity isn't as large as some competitors. You can fold down the 50/50-split third row and the 60/40-split second row to expand the available cargo space, although the Journey offers the least amount of total cargo space of the vehicles in this class. In addition to the expected compartments in and around the console, there's also a generously sized bin under the front-passenger seat cushion, as well as two large underfloor compartments in the second row.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Overall safety rating (nhtsa).

The Journey's lackluster safety report card reveals that it's not the best choice when it comes to sheltering your precious onboard cargo. Its crash-test results are not great, and—what's worse—it offers none of the advanced driver-assistance technology that is expected in other family haulers. The only available safety feature is rear parking sensors.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Dodge's warranty coverage is average, and Journey buyers won't enjoy complimentary scheduled maintenance.

  • Limited warranty covers 3 years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers 5 years or 60,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance

GT 4dr All-Wheel Drive 2019 Dodge Journey Review

2019 journey new car test drive, introduction.

Introduced as a 2009 model, the Dodge Journey midsize crossover SUV gets a simplified lineup for the 2018 model year. Still appealing to budget-minded families, the 2018 Journey comes with seven-passenger seating. Journey Crossroad models now ride on 19-inch Black Noise aluminum wheels. The optional Blacktop Package is now available on the 2018 Journey SE, as well as SXT and GT versions.  Four value-focused trim levels are offered: SE, SXT, Crossroad, and GT. Front-wheel-drive versions except the GT come with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel-drive models get a 3.6-liter V6 that develops 283 horsepower and 260 pound-feet. It's optional on front-wheel-drive models and standard on GTs.  Every four-cylinder Journey uses a 4-speed automatic transmission, at a time when competitors have turned to transmissions with several more gear ratios (though many have refinement issues with 8- and 9-speed automatics). That's just one of the ways in which the model is clearly behind the times. Fortunately, a 6-speed automatic mates with the V6 engine.  The Crossroad edition, in particular, retains some rugged design features, suggesting off-road potential. In reality, that model is no more capable of off-pavement driving than its mates.  Journey's appeal as a family vehicle is diminished by crash-test scores, as well as a lack of modern, high-tech safety equipment. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2017 Journey a five-star rating in its side-impact crash test, but only four stars overall and for the frontal-impact collision. Rollover prevention also is rated four stars, but that's typical of relatively tall vehicles. The 2018 Journey has been given only a partial crash-test score by the federal government: four stars for frontal impact and rollover. Partial crash-testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety yielded Good scores on side-impact and moderate-overlap frontal tests, but the small-overlaps frontal test for the driver's side earned a Poor score. Headlights also were rated Poor.  As for safety features, only the Crossover and GT trim levels can be equipped with a rearview camera, and it's part of a Driver Confidence Group. Even comparatively common safety features, such as blind-spot monitoring, are not available at all. Neither are adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking.  The Journey was not a class-leading product when it was introduced as a 2009 model, and now it's a dated product. Look for deals on these.

Journey SE ($22,495) has a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, front-wheel drive, power windows and locks, 4.3-inch touchscreen audio with USB, three-row seating, and 17-inch steel wheels. (Prices are MSRP and do not include destination charge.) Journey AWD SE ($26,895) has the V6 engine and all-wheel drive.  Journey SXT ($25,695) adds appearance upgrades, foglamps, alloy wheels, and body-color mirrors. A greater number of options are available. AWD SXT ($29,195) has the V6 engine and all-wheel drive.  Journey Crossroad ($27,895) comes with leather/mesh seat upholstery, an 8.4-inch infotainment system, Bluetooth, unpainted cladding, and 19-inch alloy wheels. Options include navigation and rear-seat entertainment. AWD Crossroad ($31,395) gets the V6 engine and all-wheel drive.  Journey GT ($32,495) has a stiffer suspension, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and comes standard with the V6. A trailer-tow package is optional only for GT. AWD GT ($34,395) gets all-wheel drive.  The Blacktop Package, available on all except Crossroad trim, includes black roof rails, black mirrors and grille, and 17-inch alloy wheels (19-inch on SXT and GT).

The Dodge Journey looks downright dowdy compared with the latest crossovers, a lingering throwback to the past. Journey SE models are distinctly downscale, with untinted window glass and 17-inch steel wheels with plastic hubcaps. Journey SXT trim moves it up a notch with alloy wheels, LED taillights, body-color mirrors, and foglamps.  The Crossroad relies on more rugged looks, not unlike Subaru rivals, but off-road capabilities are no better than other versions. The chrome roof rails and a body kit jazz up the Crossroad a bit. The bright bars front and rear, intended to suggest skid plates, visually stand out too much.  Measuring a modest 192 inches overall, a Journey might fit into some garages that would be tight for a minivan.

Versatile and functional, the well-configured Journey cabin falls short on flair. Trailing most rivals, it's also less spacious than newer crossovers with three rows of seats.  No Journey qualifies as luxurious, by any means. Yet, interior materials are generally good in view of Journey prices. Cloth upholstery in SE and SXT editions feels durable. Easy-clean leather-faced seats are optional on Crossroad and standard for GT. Leather/mesh in the Crossroad is the most enticing choice.  Though it's contoured, with soft edges and good-looking graining, the dashboard can only be called dull. Crossroad and GT trim brings an 8.4-inch infotainment system that's delightful to use. Unfortunately, it's incompatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.  Cabin space is decent, for a three-row vehicle of the Journey's size. Front seats are average, with no height control for the passenger. Two riders fit neatly into the second row, but three will be a squeeze. The bench slides fore/aft, but the seat-folding mechanism trails that of newer crossovers. Children are the best candidates for the third row, which falls short on space.  With both the second and third rows folded flat, cargo space totals 67.6 cubic feet. Raising all seatbacks leaves only 10.7 cubic feet behind the third row. Small-item storage is ample, abetted by under-seat bins in the second-row floor.

Driving Impression

Ride comfort is adequate, though quality varies. Standard 17-inch wheels yield the most supple ride, while optional 19-inchers can produce jiggly responses on troubled pavement.  Journeys handle confidently, though all models suffer considerable body lean when cornering. Hydraulic-type power steering feels natural and centers appropriately during highway driving.  Chrysler's four-cylinder engine isn't strong enough to propel a two-ton Journey with much vigor, and can feel overmatched when carrying several passengers. The 4-speed automatic is a relic from an earlier era, and deserves to be ditched.  Especially with all-wheel drive, the V6 engine is the wiser choice. Acceleration is strong, but the 6-speed automatic can grow confused at times, especially at low speeds.  Journeys trail the competition on noise and refinement. Both engines emit a rumbling that intrudes into the cabin.  Aged transmissions impair fuel economy, which trails most rivals. Four-cylinder models are EPA-rated at 19/25 mpg City/Highway, or 21 mpg Combined. With front-drive, V6 models are EPA-rated at 17/25 mpg City/Highway, or 19 mpg Combined. Estimates drop to 16/24/19 mpg with all-wheel drive.

Considering the number of three-row crossover competitors that are way more refined nowadays, the dated Journey's only real drawing card is its price. Substantial discounts should be available. Even so, standard features are limited, and a Journey feels well behind the times in just about every area.  Driving impressions by Andrew Ganz, The Car Connection. James M. Flammang contributed to this report.

Dodge Journey

Smaller than the typical mid-sized SUV, the Journey is a dated and mediocre performer. It rides decently and is fairly quiet, but that's about all. It suffers from a lack of agility, lousy fuel economy from the optional 3.6-liter V6, a reluctant transmission, and a tiny third-row seat. For the same sticker price of a V6-powered Journey, one can buy the much better Kia Sorento, but hefty discounts are the norm for the Journey. Poor IIHS small overlap crash-test results, subpar reliability and owner satisfaction add to the long list of demerits. Hefty discounts are common, but don't fall for this SUV that's soon to be put to pasture.

Dodge vs. other new car brands, owner reports, 2019 midsized suvs 3-row ratings.

In most cases, automotive warranties are based on the vehicle identification number (VIN), and the warranty will be valid regardless of ownership. The dealership can tell you exactly how much warranty is left.

  • 6-speed Automatic
  • 4-speed Automatic
  • 2.4-liter 4 (173 hp)
  • 3.6-liter V6 (283 hp)

The 2011 reworking brought a much nicer interior and a better V6, but the lack of agility and still-mediocre fuel economy keep it out of the top ranks. Plus it was more expensive than many better rivals. Poor IIHS small overlap crash-test results and below average owner satisfaction add to the long list of demerits. Three row seating became standard for 2018.  Ultimately, we think you'd be better served looking at something else. The V6 engine and all-wheel drive were dropped in 2020 and the Journey finally came to an end.

features & specs

The 2019 dodge journey has dropped entirely off our charts thanks to outdated style, safety, and technology..

The 2019 Dodge Journey posts a low base price and a fairly large cabin for up to seven passengers—and that’s all.

Woefully out of date in terms of safety, the 2019 Journey also doesn’t have much in the way of the latest features, and its styling has grown stale.

At a 2.0 out of 10, it’s one of the lowest-rated vehicles on our site. (Read more about how we rate cars .)

The Journey is still here, despite yearly rumors of its demise: Fiat Chrysler had planned to replace it long ago with a new vehicle, but all the attention’s gone to Jeep instead.

You’d be better off with a Jeep crossover, in any case—any one of them. The Journey still sports the same shape it has since 2009, albeit with an interior upgraded in the 2013 model year.

Powertrains haven’t changed either. The base Journey still sports an inline-4 coupled to a 4-speed automatic, a factoid we’ll be struggling to remember years from now in auto trivia contests. The V-6 model’s much better baked, and the Journey rides well enough, but you can do better.

The Journey’s ample interior presents the best pitch it has for new-car buyers. Four adults fit well, and five can sit inside without resorting to name calling and elbow shoving. The second-row seat slides to adjust cabin or cargo space, and there’s a third-row seat, though it’s sized only for kids.

Where the Journey face-plants is in safety. Crash-test scores are poor; there’s no automatic emergency braking; a rearview camera only became standard when the Feds forced the issue. It’s shy on other features, too; Dodge makes base Journey drivers pay for Bluetooth connectivity, and its 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system isn’t Android or Apple compatible, and won’t ever be.

2019 Dodge Journey Styling

The dodge journey's long in the tooth, and it shows..

Got your acid-wash jeans ready? Then you’re ready for a drive in the Dodge Journey, which hasn’t changed all that much since 2009, and seems almost ready for a throwback comeback, it’s been around so long.

It’s dowdy and we think there’s better for less. We give it a 3 for styling, knocking off a point each for the interior and exterior. (Read more about how we rate cars .)

At one time the Journey’s shape held up well, with its sort-of-Subaru look. The chunky body and squared-off grille complemented other Dodges with its faux ruggedness, even though the Journey isn’t meant at all for off-road driving. Base models get untinted glass and steel wheels, but dressed-up models carry less shame, with chrome roof rails and unpainted body cladding on the Crossroad version giving it its most contemporary look.

The cabin in the Journey is dull, painfully straightforward. The soft contour of the dash gets attractively grained plastics, and it’s not a terrible place to while away the hours and miles; it’s just not inspiring at all. The Journey Crossroad gets the most interesting treatment, with a leather-and-mesh trim.

2019 Dodge Journey Performance

The 2019 dodge journey falls behind most crossovers in performance, but rides reasonably well..

When it comes to performance, the Dodge Journey does best in ride quality. Its base powertrain is outdated, and its strong V-6 couples to an older automatic.

It’s a 4 for performance, with the rating based on the most popular V-6 model. (Read more about how we rate cars .)

The base 2019 Journey struggles for acceleration and attention. It offers a 2.4-liter inline-4 with 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque, and dates back to the last decade in its most recent iteration. It’s grumbly, groany, and not powerful enough to overcome about 4,000 pounds of curb weight. What’s more, on base models, it’s saddled with a 4-speed automatic that’s really a relic. It manages only meager acceleration, and only then when only a passenger or two are on board.

Optional or standard on all Journeys is a 283-hp 3.6-liter V-6 with 260 lb-ft of torque. It’s Dodge’s workhorse engine, and comes with front- or all-wheel-drive configurations and a 6-speed automatic. While better than the 4-speed, the 6-speed still is shy a few gears from vehicles in Dodge’s own family; it’s hardly state of the art. The V-6 puts up feisty acceleration, but the automatic confuses some commands for suggestions.

The Journey rides better than it scoots. It has old-school hydraulic power steering, rather than modern electric steering, so it has something in the way of feedback, with good on-center feel and natural unwind. That’s too esoteric for what it’s supposed to do, but any driver will recognize the comfortable, slightly soft ride it has on smaller wheels and tires, though it tends toward jiggly on the 19-inchers on GT models.

2019 Dodge Journey Comfort & Quality

The 2019 journey is at its best when four or five adults need a ride..

The 2019 Dodge Journey has more space than the average compact crossover, and lots of room for passengers in the first two rows of seats, not to mention their cargo in back.

We give it a 6 for comfort. (Read more about how we rate cars .)

The Dodge Journey’s standard front seats have six ways to adjust their angle and distance from the dash, but passengers don’t get control over their seat height. In the second row, two passengers will find good space and support, and a third might fit for a brief crosstown ride. The bench seat’s best tricks come when it slides on a track; space can be configured for better leg room or for more cargo space. The second-row seats can be fitted with child boosters, too.

The seatbacks fold down to expand cargo room, but the Journey’s slide-away mechanism is rudimentary, which means access to the cramped third-row seat isn’t easy.

In all, the Journey has 67.6 cubic feet of space behind the front seats, but when all the seats are in use, it has only 10.7 cubic feet of room behind the rearmost seat.

There’s plenty of room to store small items, including convenient under-seat storage bins in the second row’s floor.

The Journey isn’t a luxury ride, at all, but the cloth upholstery on base versions seems durable. Leather seats can be fitted to Crossroad and GT models, but we don’t recommend spending any more than you need, if you decide you need a Journey.

2019 Dodge Journey Safety

Safety 1 the 2019 journey is one of the lowest-rated vehicles for safety..

Safety should be a primary concern for any family vehicle, but the aged Dodge Journey just doesn’t compete on this critical scale.

Its limited technology and outdated body structure land at a 1 in this category, the lowest rating we’ve assigned. (Read more about how we rate cars .)

The 2019 Journey comes with a standard rearview camera, finally, but it doesn’t have anything like automatic emergency braking or forward-collision warnings. Fiat Chrysler long ago had planned to stop making the Journey, but it’s been kept around while the company designs new small crossovers. The Journey’s stayed too long at the party, from a safety perspective.

That’s confirmed by its crash-test ratings, which earn it a “Poor” rating for frontal impact protection on the IIHS’ tests. The NHTSA gives it a four-star overall score. It’s more competitive with old SUVs from the 1990s than it is with other new vehicles on sale today.

2019 dodge journey features, the journey lacks the amenities we’ve come to expect in crossovers..

Dodge has dropped the SXT from the 2019 Journey lineup, and added standard equipment to the base model.

The moves aren’t enough to keep the 2019 Journey from a 3 in features. It doesn’t have enough standard gear or options, and it misses out on lots of the latest features that drive sales to better crossover SUVs. (Read more about how we rate cars .)

The 2019 Journey SE costs about $26,000 and has standard LED taillights this year, as well as power mirrors, windows, and locks; a third-row seat; and a 4.3-inch touchscreen audio system with USB port. Dodge sells a CD player, Bluetooth connectivity, and rear-seat child boosters as options.

The Journey Crossroad is the best value of the lot. It wears unpainted body cladding, leather upholstery with mesh inserts, and gets a power driver seat, 19-inch wheels, satellite radio, and an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system that’s not compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Options include rear parking sensors, navigation, and a rear-seat entertainment system.

Spend as much as you can on a Journey—more than $33,000— and the GT model adds heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a stiffer suspension. A trailer tow prep package is available. We don’t recommend the Journey, but we really don’t recommend this expensive trim.

2019 Dodge Journey Fuel Economy

Gas mileage is usually a crossover strength, but not here..

The EPA hasn’t confirmed the Journey’s gas mileage ratings yet for 2019, but they shouldn’t change much, if it at all.

We give it a 3 based on those carry-over figures, but we’ll update this section when data goes live. (Read more about how we rate cars .)

We base the rating of 3 on the most popular Journey, a V-6 with all-wheel drive. The most recent ratings for that version come in at 16 mpg city, 24 highway, 19 combined. With front-wheel drive it’s marginally better, at 17/25/19 mpg.

With front-wheel drive, a 2.4-liter inline-4, and an outdated 4-speed automatic, the Journey’s pegged at 19/25/21 mpg.

Full Edmunds Review: 2017 Dodge Journey SUV

2019 dodge journey gt awd review

Vehicle overview

The 2017 Dodge Journey soldiers on as a relic of the past in many ways. This affordable crossover with available three-row seating debuted back in 2009, and it hasn't received a full redesign since. Its advancing age is most apparent in the engine bay, where the Journey's base engine is getting on in years and lacks the efficiency, refinement and oomph of its more modern counterparts. It also comes paired with an outdated four-speed automatic transmission; smooth-shifting six-speed automatics are now the norm. You can also find fault in the way the Journey drives, as the Journey feels soft and ponderous around turns that most rivals would handle deftly.

One bright spot is the optional V6 engine. So equipped, the Journey accelerates more assertively than most budget-priced crossovers, and fuel economy is barely affected. Throw in the available 8.4-inch touchscreen — a longtime favorite of ours — and the optional third-row seat and rear entertainment system, and you've got a pretty satisfying family vehicle that should still cost less than you expect.

Overall, though, the Journey remains a decidedly mixed bag, so we recommend taking a close look at other models. Our top pick among similar vehicles would be the Kia Sorento. Although it can get rather pricey, it also comes in two- or three-row specification and offers superior handling, features and interior refinement. If you don't need three rows, we'd point you to just about any other roomy small crossover SUV, including perennial favorites such as the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4.

Every 2017 Dodge Journey comes standard with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, active front head restraints, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. Integrated second-row child booster seats are optional. A rearview camera and rear parking sensors are also available, but common safety technologies such as blind-spot monitoring and lane departure warning are not offered.

In Edmunds brake testing, a front-wheel-drive, V6-equipped Journey came to a stop from 60 mph in 124 feet, an average performance for this class.

In government crash testing, the Journey received four out of five stars for overall crash protection, with four stars for front-impact crash protection and five stars for side-crash protection. In crash testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Journey received the top score of Good in the moderate-overlap front-impact, side-impact, roof strength and head restraint (whiplash protection) tests. In the agency's small-overlap front-impact test, however, the Journey received the lowest rating of Poor.

2019 dodge journey gt awd review

The SE comes standard with 17-inch steel wheels, roof rails, heated mirrors, keyless entry and ignition, cruise control, dual-zone manual climate control, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a sliding and reclining second-row seat, a 4.3-inch touchscreen, and a six-speaker sound system with a USB port and an auxiliary audio jack.

Optional for the SE (standard with AWD) is the Flexible Seating package, which adds a 50/50-split third row and tri-zone manual climate control.

Moving up to the SXT adds 17-inch alloy wheels, foglights, a unique front fascia, LED taillights (also standard on the SE AWD), body-colored exterior mirrors and the Flexible Seating package.

The Crossroad adds 19-inch wheels, gloss black and chrome exterior trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, Bluetooth and satellite radio.

The Crossroad Plus expands upon the Crossroad's feature content with tri-zone automatic climate control, LED interior lighting, leather upholstery with mesh inserts, a six-way power driver seat (with four-way power lumbar adjustment), a fold-flat front passenger seat with a hidden storage bin, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, an in-dash DVD player, an SD card slot and a cargo net.

The GT adds the V6 engine as standard, plus different 19-inch wheels, remote engine start, a body-color grille, a sport-tuned suspension, automatic headlights, perforated leather upholstery with red stitching, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, an interior observation mirror, a premium audio system with a subwoofer and a 115-volt power outlet.

Many features on the upper trim levels are available on lower trims via option packages. Other available features (depending on trim) include the Blacktop package (gloss black 19-inch wheels, grille and exterior trim), a sunroof, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, integrated second-row child booster seats, a rear-seat entertainment system and a navigation system.

By default, the 2017 Dodge Journey SE, SXT, Crossroad and Crossroad Plus come with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 173 hp and 166 pound-feet of torque. It drives the front wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 21 mpg combined (19 city/25 highway), a decidedly subpar rating for a four-cylinder crosstour.

Optional on those trims and standard on the GT is a 3.6-liter V6. It's good for 283 hp and 260 lb-ft and is matched to a six-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is standard with the V6 unless you get the GT, which offers either FWD or AWD. The front-wheel-drive GT returns 19 mpg combined (17 city/25 highway), while the AWD V6 models get a similar 19 mpg combined (16 city/24 highway).

We recorded a 7.8-second 0-60-mph time in a front-drive, V6-equipped Journey, which is a sluggish showing given this engine's output ratings. Still, the V6 gives you plenty of punch in most situations.

The 2017 Dodge Journey has two personalities, depending on which engine you choose. The four-cylinder engine is noisy and really doesn't have enough power to get this crossover moving with any sense of urgency, especially when loaded up with passengers. The outdated four-speed automatic transmission can be clunky in normal operation, and it does the Journey no favors in the fuel economy department, either. Accordingly, we'd avoid the four-cylinder entirely and step up to the 3.6-liter V6, which gives you the power you're going to want. Unfortunately, the V6's six-speed automatic transmission can be slow to respond when a downshift is needed.

Around town, the Journey rides smoothly over rough pavement and bumps. However, the steering is on the slow side, and you might find yourself having to make more hand movements than you'd like. When driven harder through turns, the Journey's body leans noticeably. Overall, the Journey feels heavier than many other crossovers and doesn't inspire much driver confidence.

The 2017 Journey's cabin provides generally pleasing materials and textures for the price, while the gauges and dashboard have a functional and contemporary design. In general, Dodge has done a nice job of keeping the Journey's innards up-to-date despite the vehicle's advanced age. Moreover, the available Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment interface is one of the best in the business, thanks to large, easily readable typefaces and icons and sensible menus. Few systems are more straightforward to use or pleasing to the eye.

Families will appreciate the selection of clever storage spaces squirreled throughout the Journey's cabin, particularly the cubby holes in the floor. You'll find a fair amount of legroom behind the front seats, and the optional integrated child booster seats are a nice bonus. Furthering the family-oriented mission is the Journey's widely available third-row seat, which is bundled with a separate rear air-conditioner. This seat is far from adult-friendly, but it's handy if you need to shuttle a couple extra kids to soccer practice.

Lower all the seats and the Journey provides 67.6 cubic feet of total cargo capacity, which is an average capacity among small crossovers.

No, the 2019 Journey is not a good used midsize SUV . It has a user-friendly infotainment system, and the first two rows of seats are spacious and comfortable.
