Air Travel ESL Lesson Description

Objective & overview.

This air travel ESL lesson provides activities, PDF worksheets, and digital materials designed for intermediate B1 - B2 students. In this lesson, students will:

  • Learn air travel vocabulary terms
  • Discuss varuous aspects of airport and airfare pricing
  • Learn a variety of phrases related to prices and saving money
  • Use a variety of adjectives/synonyms for “cheap” and “expensive”
  • Use basic modal verbs in the context of air travel

PREVIEW & DISCUSSION

In this activity, students discuss topics about booking flights and saving money when flying . The activity is divided into three parts. In the first part, students imagine themselves in the shoes of Daniela, who is booking a flight. There is an image of her thinking about what to purchase when booking her flight. Students discuss various flight amenities and add-ons , such as seat selection , check-in luggage , in-flight meals , Wi-Fi , and insurance . Students reflect on whether they personally choose to pay for these amenities and add-ons when flying. They also brainstorm other possible options available for purchase when booking a flight.

Next, students will explore strategies and suggest tips for saving money when flying. There is a list of vocabulary terms related to air travel that students can use in their tips. These include: luggage, seats, food/snacks, airline rewards programs, and online flight browsing.

Finally, in Part 3, students engage in a debate-style discussion, expressing whether they agree, disagree, or partially agree/disagree with statements related to air travel. These include topics on Wi-Fi in flight costs, preferences for seating on the plane, and airport pricing.

VIEWING ACTIVITY

In the viewing activity, students watch a news report about air travel , and how it’s changed in recent times. It mostly focuses on the pricing aspect of flying. For example, the reporter in the video talks about how the prices for add-ons, amenities, and even pricing at the airport have all increased. There are some questions about the video that students answer. Then, the second activity is focused on the reporter’s thoughts about seat selection, paying for Wi-Fi on the plane, and airport food pricing. This section concludes with an activity on the reporter’s two suggestions she gives for saving money when flying.

DISCUSSION & VOCABULARY

After watching the video, students discuss a few questions about the video. These include topics such as using a rewards program for flying, and whether it’s fair to charge for so many add-ons in the flight booking process.

In the following part, students imagine that Nikki, a travel vlogger, makes a video on tips to save money when flying. Students must complete the tips using a set of provided vocabulary terms . Through this activity, students learn a variety of vocabulary terms and phrases related to saving money. Some of these vocabulary terms include:

  • to break the bank
  • to cost a fortune
  • to be a penny-pincher
  • to find great deals
  • to be a rip-off

In the last two parts for this section, students browse Nikki’s tips for synonyms for the adjectives “cheap” and “expensive”. They use these synonyms, in addition to some of the phrases, to talk about a product or service they purchased recently.

SHOW OFF YOUR SAVINGS SKILLS!

In this communicative activity, students can work individually or in pairs/groups. They imagine they’re a vlogger (or vloggers). Their goal is to create a video on tips to save money on something. They are provided with a list of options on categories they could choose from, such as food and clothing.

In the second step, students come up with an engaging title for their video and a set of tips. In their tips, students are instructed to use some of the vocabulary they learned in the viewing follow-up section.

Then, students present their tips to the class in the context of a vlog. They’re encouraged to listen to and comment on or ask questions after the other students present their video to the class.

BONUS GRAMMAR

There is a bonus grammar section for this lesson plan that focuses on the usage of basic modal verbs ( can / should / have to ). There is an activity for students to use these modal verbs in the context of sentences about flying, traveling, and saving money.

BENEFITS OF USING THIS AIR TRAVEL ESL LESSON

  • Enhanced Vocabulary : Students will learn and practice air travel vocabulary terms related to amenities, add-ons, and pricing.
  • Critical Thinking : Through activities such as imagining themselves booking a flight and brainstorming strategies to save money when flying, students develop critical thinking skills. They consider various factors in order to make informed decisions.
  • Creative Expression : The activity where students imagine creating a vlog on tips to save money allows for creative expression as students come up with engaging titles, develop tips, and present their ideas in a vlog format.

How to use the air travel ESL discussion questions

It is recommended that you download the air travel ESL discussion questions in PDF format using one of the links above. The best way to encourage classroom interaction is to download and print the air travel discussion questions in the 'pairs' or 'threes' PDF format and then divide the questions by cutting along the dotted lines. This allows students to take turns asking and answering the air travel discussion questions in groups of two or three. Alternatively, you could use the 'cards' format to distribute the questions to any number of students to ask and share.

It is advisable to prepare students for using these discussion questions by first introducing them to the topic of air travel in an interesting and engaging way. An anecdote, quiz question or a related image or video could all be used to achieve this. Depending on the level, it may also be necessary to pre-teach any challenging vocabulary related to air travel contained in the discussion questions.

For more ESL discussion questions, see this site's main page. There are discussion questions on a range of topics including general, grammar and business English topics.

Are you into flying?

Speaking class

Speaking about air travel

photo of the author

LESSON OVERVIEW

This worksheet focuses on speaking about air travel . Students answer different questions, watch and discuss a video . They also read and discuss short stories and create their own.

This is a Speaking Class worksheet. It includes a variety of tasks that let your students practise their speaking skills. This lesson format does not focus on grammar or vocabulary. Learn more about it here.

The worksheet starts with a warm-up. Students look at different types of trips and share what mode of transport they would use in each case. Then, they move on to speaking about air travel. They talk about travelling by plane in their country, about its advantages and disadvantages. They also discuss whether travelling by plane is dangerous and come up with reasons why some people avoid flying.

VIDEO & DISCUSSION

In this part of the lesson students work with the video. At first they read a message in which a friend asks for advice regarding a long-haul flight. Students brainstorm as many tips as they can to share with their friend. After that, students watch the video giving tips on what to do on a long flight and compare them to their ideas. Students answer more questions about the tips and share their own experiences and preferences when it comes to long flights.

READING & MORE SPEAKING ABOUT AIR TRAVEL

Students read three short stories about different situations related to travelling by plane. They discuss how peopl e in each situation might have felt and what they might have done. Students also share if anything similar happened to them and what they did or what they would have done. In the final part of the lesson, students tell an anecdote about one of the given topics (e.g. an incident at the airport, a security issue, a lost document , etc.). The rest of the group tries to guess whether the story is true or not . If students have a lot of experience with air travel, they can tell two stories – one true and one false.

I am fascinated by the big variety of speaking activities! I would appreciate more similar lessons :-). It was creative, inspiring, and great!

' src=

Thanks, we’re happy you like it 🙂 And we have a lot more coming so stay tuned!

' src=

The video alone gives a lot of ideas for discussion and other activities

Sure, you can get creative and do more with the video than a worksheet offers. You can even share your ideas here if you’d like. I’m sure our users will appreciate it 🙂

The material is fine, though the level of the video would be problematic for B1level students. I would label this B2/C1- and even with B2 there would be quite a lot of vocabulary prep (such as Circadian rhythms, jetlag, nauseous etc.)

Other than that, I have subscribed to this site and I have been able to adapt and amend some of the material for my students in Slovakia. It has entailed a lot of work this year, but in my second year, preparation will be reduced by 70%+.

Also, the templates and slide transitions have proven a useful template and spur to learning to using LibreOffice’s Impress (their Powerpoint equivalent) and has enabled me to engage with Impress for other kinds of lessons.

P.S. A very good stimulating video, either for the classroom or homework, is Air New Zealand’s inflight video based on Lord of the Rings. Very useful for true/false questions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOw44VFNk8Y

Hi David! Thanks for your feedback! Since the lesson is a Speaking class, it aims to make students participate in discussion and share their experiences rather than work on video comprehension. That’s why we thought it would be fair to give some of our strong B1 students a chance to talk about air travel.

And thanks for sharing additional resources, we always appreciate it 🙂

Please note that the audio recordings feature a mix of native and non-native English speakers to reflect what passengers will encounter in real-life.

Good functional language lesson. My students were very engaged and lends itself very easily to additional personalization.

The students felt that the language work was long and tedious Q and A

Does this kind of check-in still exist? I always seem to have to use a machine.

Engaging lesson
