Europe is the birthplace of the bicycle, though exactly where it was first invented is up for debate (the French contend the inventor was a Frenchman, the English say he was one of theirs, and the Scots throw in a claim, too). Cycling culture runs deep in Europe, making it one of the best destinations for a two-wheeled tour. The locals will not only respect you on the road, they’ll also embrace you in the pub, taverna, or café for taking the time to explore their countries in such a civilized manner.

The trips listed below are fully supported, meaning they include vehicles en route to pick you up if you need help and mechanics to fix your bike if it breaks. The tour guides have extensive knowledge of the area and can, if necessary, offer encouragement during a long day. Here are six trips to put on your calendar.

The Napoleon Expedition

How's this for a European vacation: Follow the route of Napoleon's 1812 Russian Campaign on two wheels.

Paris to Moscow: Ride & Seek Bicycle Adventures

This epic 45-day, 2,736-mile route from Ride & Seek Bicycle Adventures roughly traces Napoleon’s 1812 Russian Campaign. It begins in Paris with a spin down the Champs-Élysées, followed by aperitifs under the shadow of the Arc de Triomphe before departing for Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Russia—through rolling vineyards, deep forests, medieval villages, and historic cities. As you enter Moscow on the last day, know that you’re guaranteed a much warmer welcome than the diminutive Corsican received when he triumphantly ended his march in Red Square. Note: If 45 days are more than you can commit to, the tour is composed of six one-week stages, so you can do as many (or as few) as you like.

Details: $14,745 for entire tour, $2,605 for each stage; prices based on double occupancy. Fully supported/guided. Includes breakfasts, some lunches, and most dinners.

l’Etape du Tour

best cycling tour europe

France: Trek Travel

Each year since 1993, more than 10,000 cyclists have registered for l’Etape du Tour, a one-day event that allows amateurs to ride one of the mountain stages of that year’s Tour de France while the pros have a rest day. On this five- or seven-day guided tour from Trek Travel , each day features routes that were stages in previous Tours, culminating in a guaranteed spot in l’Etape du Tour, which in 2015 will be a 87-mile day climbing Col de Chaussy, Col de la Croix de Fer, Col du Mollard, and a summit finish at La Toussuire. This year, Trek team rider and 2010 Tour de France winner Andy Schleck will ride along with guests for the entire week.

Details: $4,699 for seven days, $4,199 for five days per person; prices based on double occupancy. Fully supported/guided. Includes breakfasts, some lunches, and most dinners.

Land’s End to John O’Groats

best cycling tour europe

United Kingdom: Peak Tours

Starting from the very southwest tip of England and ending almost 1,000 miles away in the northeast reaches of Scotland, this 14-day ride from  Peak Tours  rolls through patchwork-quilt farmlands in the south, craggy mountains and pristine lakes of the Lake District, and the barren moors of northern Scotland. Whenever possible, the route avoids main roads in favor of lovely flowered country lanes and quiet back roads that lead to out-of-the-way villages and centuries-old inns.

Details:  $2,400 to $3,486, depending on choice of accommodations. Fully supported. Includes all breakfasts and lunches; dinners are on your own.

The Danube

best cycling tour europe

Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary:  Experience Plus

There’s a good reason the Danube River is one of the most popular rides in Europe: Almost anyone can do it. There are no hills to speak of, and most of the riding is on a network of paved paths that follow the river as it passes through the Eastern European countryside and two of Europe’s most storied capitals, Vienna and Budapest (there’s a rest day in Vienna). This 13-day, 526-mile ride (named by National Geographic Traveler as one of the “50 Tours of a Lifetime”) from Experience Plus  begins in Germany and winds past impressive Bavarian monasteries, verdant Austrian vineyards, and pristine Hungarian villages before ending in the imperial gem that is Budapest.

Details:  $5,500. Fully supported/guided. Includes use of a 27- to 30-gear titanium bike or an aluminum tandem with e-bike option, all breakfasts, and half of your dinners.

Sacred Sites of Greece

best cycling tour europe

Peloponnese: Cycle Greece

Cycle Greece ’s eight-day tour (one of Bicycling magazine’s “best tours” in 2009) travels through arguably the most beautiful part of mainland Greece and offers both long (358 miles) and short (237 miles) options. Stretches in the saddle are broken up by stops at some of the Greek’s most famous sites, including the Olympic grounds where the first games commenced in 796 B.C. Also included are tours of Epidavros, the most famous healing center in the classical world, and the ancient city of Mycenae.

Details: $2,340, based on double occupancy. Fully supported/guided. Includes use of a Specialized 27-gear road bike, entrance fees and private tours of several sites, and all dinners (with house wine).

Dalmation Coast

best cycling tour europe

Croatia:  Backroads

“The Mediterranean as It Once Was” has been Croatia’s tagline for years. The country touts its beautiful beaches, lavender and olive groves, and mashup of Roman, Byzantine, French, Ottoman, and Slavic architecture. Backroads ’ six-day tour island hops from Brac to Hvar (the Cannes of Croatia) to Korcula. The leisurely length (106- or 192-mile options) means there’s plenty of time at the end of the day for a dip in the gorgeous blue-green sea. The final day is spent in historic Dubrovnik, the “Pearl of the Adriatic.”

Details: $3,998 to $4,598, depending on dates; based on double occupancy. Fully supported/guided. Includes all meals except two lunches and one dinner.

7 Scenic Bike Tours in Europe for Every Level

While seeing a destination by train might be one of the most romanticized ways to travel, there’s nothing quite like feeling the wind in your hair as you cycle across the continent. Because many European countries are bike-friendly, there’s no better place to embark on a multi-day journey that blends physical activity with plenty of sightseeing. We scouted seven best bike tours in Europe with varying difficulty levels, from an easy ride through France’s Champagne region to an advanced route through Norwegian fjords.

Land and Sea along the Dalmatian Coast with Butterfield & Robinson

Length: 8 Days | Difficulty: Difficult

Mix your cycling with some sailing on this eight-day journey down Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast between Split and Dubrovnik. While you’ll bike by day through the hills and cliffs of both mainland Croatia as well as some of its islands—the country has more than 1,200 of them—you’ll relax at night aboard a luxury yacht that has a sauna and a Jacuzzi. Some of the island highlights include the bustling port of Hvar Town, a popular spot with the yachting crowd; the stunning national park on the island of Mljet; olive groves on the sparsely populated island of Vis; and the 8th-century walled Korcula Town.

Champagne, France

Champagne, France with DuVine Cycling + Adventure Co.

Length: 4 Days | Difficulty: Easy

If you’re a cycler who loves to imbibe (not while on your bike, of course!), this beginner-level tour with DuVine  Cycling + Adventure Co. is for you. After all, what could be more magical than taking a spin around the Champagne region of France, visiting some of the domaines that produce your favorite bubbly? You’ll begin your journey in Reims (home to a famous cathedral where the kings of France were once crowned) before venturing out to the countryside to see historic World War I sites before arriving in Épernay, where Moët et Chandon is produced. Afterwards, your route winds through the Marne River Valley to see elegant châteaux and eventually stops in Hautvillers, home of Dom Pérignon.

Best for mid-level riders, this tour with REI begins in Shannon, then crosses the Burren on the way to the iconic Cliffs of Moher. You’ll take a brief stop at Father Ted’s house for tea, then ferry over to the Aran Islands, exploring Inis Oírr and Inis Mór both on bike and on foot. A ferry brings the group to Connemara, where you’ll cycle through mountains, bogs, and beaches. Finally, you’ll ride to Kylemore Abbey and Ballynahinch Castle to tour the historic sites before heading to Galway.

From there, the winding route takes you along the Romantic Road in the Lustrafjord; across the Sognefjellet mountain pass, the highest in Northern Europe at over 4,600 feet; past the Nigardsbreen and Bergset glaciers; and to the farms of the village of Fimreite.

Baltic Land and Sea with Backroads

Length: 9 Days | Difficulty: Easy

In just nine days, you’ll cover five different countries on the Baltic Sea during this Backroads tour , which combines cycling and cruising. The journey begins in Denmark, where you'll tour cosmopolitan Copenhagen before biking out into the countryside and eventually the shore. After sailing across the sea to Tallinn, Estonia, you’ll spend a day exploring the medieval city and biking through woodlands and beaches. Next up is St. Petersburg, Russia, where you’ll not only see the city by bike but also by kayak through its many canals (it’s not called the Venice of the North for nothing). Then, you're back on a boat bound for Helsinki, Finland, a city comprising more than 300 islands and plenty of bike paths that crisscross them. Finally, you’ll reach Sweden, first at the port city of Visby, where you’ll cycle along coastal routes, before concluding in Stockholm.

13 best cycling holidays in Europe (and beyond)

In this article I share our pick of the best cycling holidays – in Europe and around the world.

This article is a bit different to our usual “best of” picks that are fiercely independent. That’s because this article shares the trip I would pick from the cycling tour operator clients we worked with in 2022.

You’ll find a mixture of big and small cycling holiday providers but they’re all businesses I’ve come to know, respect and whom I’m proud to call clients.

They would be the people I would turn to if we were looking for help with organising a cycling trip in Europe (or beyond) for 2023.

See what you think; read on and find out our pick of the best cycling holidays in the world!

This article features our clients but none have paid to feature here. You’ll find information on our relationship with our clients in our disclosure policy and website terms. Operators are listed in alphabetical order within each section.

2. Sports Tours International

Support from Sports Tours International at a gran fondo sportive

In my mind, Sports Tours International have always been the benchmark for sportive trips and spectacular cycle holidays in Europe. So getting to work with them was a bit of a dream!

Sports Tours have many competitors but there’s no one else that has been offering such a broad range of Europe cycling tours and holidays to cycling events for the last 45 years. Whether you want to go to the Maratona dles Dolomites or the Étape du Tour, the Marmotte Alps, Srade Bianche or Amstel Gold, you can do it with Sports Tours.

They’re official VIP tour operator to the Tour de France and five monuments of cycling. That means they offer VIP access and hospitality on every stage either as a day option or as part of their fully supported multi-day tours.

They also offer custom tours for cyclists and spectators. Basically if you’re looking for the best cycling holidays in Europe that are focused around a sportive, Sports Tours International have got your back!

All the major cycling events in Europe – and many of the less major ones too!

A VIP trip to the Tour de France

Having spoken at length with Clément Cicuto, Sports Tours International’s General Manager for Europe, I’m confident we’d have an awesome time on whichever of their Tour de France trips we went for.

Perhaps though, one of the big mountain top spectacles would be my first choice. The opportunity to ride the closed roads just ahead of the event and mingle with the movers and shakers of the cycling world in the VIP tent, would be pretty out of this world!

Cycling in Mallorca on a cycling climb

David Harwood was a latecomer to cycling, but has made up for it by setting up SunVelo with his co-founder, the former pro Alistair Irvine. Together they’ve built a great reputation for their popular Mallorca cycling holidays, which offer guided rides at four different group levels during spring, autumn and winter.

SunVelo’s ethos is all about getting groups off the beaten track and away from the ticklist routes. They are rigorous about their quality and training standards and have ride leaders who foster community and camaraderie on the road. That’s a big part of what keeps cyclists coming back year after year.

And finally, I love the flexibility of what SunVelo offers – you can book anything from four nights upwards, with no fixed start dates.

Mallorca and Switzerland

Spring Season in Mallorca

If you’re looking for the best places to enjoy cycling in Europe you really can’t miss Mallorca.

Sun Velo’s Mallorca Cycling Spring Season runs from 24 March 2023 to 12 June 2023, with four varying level guided groups each day depending on what you fancy. Stay for a minimum of four nights in a four-star superior hotel with half board accommodation.

It’s a trip for the endurance style road riders looking for iconic climbs, never-ending switchbacks and stunning mountain scenery. Arrive in a group or travel solo and meet new friends, with daily distances from 70 to 145 kilometres – but that doesn’t mean you can’t bring the family too, as non-cyclists are also welcome with discounted rates.

Maybe they should bring a bike just in case though, when they see you experiencing your ultimate cycling holiday in Europe, the FOMO will be fierce.

4. austria: roadbike holidays.

Cyclists cycling by a lake in Austria

I love the simple concept behind Roadbike Holidays: provide cyclists a platform where they can find hotels that are truly road cyclist friendly.

Being listed on roadbikeholidays.com really goes deep. This is no flimsy, easy to pass test. Roadbike Holidays check in person that the hotel complies with the comprehensive list of services they expect each one of their hotels to provide (and when we turned up at two in Slovenia without any warning, we really did find these things).

The idea is that the hotel will do it all. So they’ll provide everything from your routes, to guiding, to bike hire if you need it. So it’s a road cycling holiday that’s entirely centred on the hotel providing everything you need.

Where they operate

Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Slovenia.

A stay in Austria’s Salzburger region

For a relaxing break with bikes, we’d choose to come to Roadbike Holidays’ hotel near Salzburg.

The region has got a distinctive mixture of sparkling lakes, impressive mountains and culture that promise a road bike experience you won’t forget. There are lakes, and small hills with some really nice rolling cycling tours. You can mix it up with some harder riding too; not so far from here is the famous Grossglockner Alpine Road.

Roadbike and Triathlon Hotel Mohrenwirt is a four star hotel that’s completely targeted to cyclists.

The hotel owner is a passionate athlete who competed in the Ironman Hawaii. They offer guided tours, have great Canyon bike rental and offer great healthy (but substantial) meals too.

Just 300 metres from the hotels is a private swimming beach at Lake Fuschl with a heated 25 metre outdoor pool (free entry for hotel guests). It’s a great place for a holiday.

5. Finland: Saimaa Cycle Tour

Cyclist cycling through Lake Saimaa, Finland

“Wow” was the first word that came to mind when I first saw the photos and videos that Juho Suikkari and Lieven de Rycke sent me of their new event in Finland.

Once they started talking about cycling through a continuous sunset on silent roads, past pure, freshwater lakes that are home to incredible wildlife, I was sold.

Admittedly this is not a cycling holiday as such (it’s a 295 kilometre cycling event). But if you’re coming all this way, chances are you’re going to stay a few days and turn this into a holiday.

Saimaa Cycle Tour

The Saimaa Cycle Tour has to be one of the best and unforgettable cycling challenges you’ll ever experience,

Can you imagine riding on silent roads into a continuous midnight sunset, alongside the world’s most beautiful lake landscapes?

Finland doesn’t have mountains but it makes up for that with a magical natural landscape of interconnected freshwater lakes.

Last year 1,700 cyclists took part and with three different distances, (300, 85 or 38 kilometres), this once in a lifetime experience is accessible to everyone.

Oh, and at the finish line area you get a meal ticket to have fresh smoked salmon from one of the nearby lakes. Just saying.

6. France: Alpine Cols

Three cyclists are cycling coaching on a hilly road

Alpine Cols are based in the French Alps and Marvin and the team have  been running coaching camps in the French Alps for the last ten years. Their focus is providing camps that offer top quality coaching on top of a really great cycling holiday.

They have two level of camp – an introduction to the Alps and a Gran Fondo performance camp. Both offer active coaching that share the skills cyclists need to ride quickly and safely in the mountains. Usually the rider to coach ration is less than 1:5, so you know you’ll get great attention. Accommodation is in comfortable 3 or 4 star hotels which are well known to the team. In the evenings they offer technical training sessions.

France (plus an early season camp in Tenerife)

Gran Fondo performance camp

Alpine Col’s Gran Fondo performance camp is intended to help cyclists with previous experience in the mountains to get ready for their next event. There’s not many companies out there that offer this quality, focused kind service and we love the look of what Alpine Cols offer here.

7. France: France Bike Trips (by Vélorizons)

Col de Galibier, France

These guys know cycling holidays in France inside out. It’s what they live and breathe.

France Bike Trips are a small outfit, run by a French team that are based in France and have excellent English. They know France like the back of their hand – whether you’re on a road bike, gravel bike, mountain bike, touring bike, or have kids in tow…

I came across them because I used them twice in 2020 for self-guided family cycling holidays when all the other tour operators I contacted were shut; only after that did they become a client.

Words that come to mind: flexible, reliable, knowledgeable.

Route des Grandes Alpes

I think we may have found the best cycling holiday in France… It’s every road cyclist’s dream to follow in the footsteps (or pedal strokes) of the Tour de France, and with the Route des Grandes Alpes tour, you can!

This unforgettable eight day bike tour in France takes in the very best “cols” of the iconic French multi-stage race. Cross the French Alps by pedal power from Lake Geneva to the Côte d’Azur, experiencing some of the most mythical and world famous mountain passes in road cycling.

You’ll feel like a pro with the support vehicle nearby, and having all of your kit carried for you apart from what you need for the day’s ride. Choose from two different routes each day depending on your fitness, weather and preferences.

8. Spain: Girona Cycling

Hotel and cycling camps area of Spain

Strictly speaking, Girona Cycling SL are not a cycling tour operator at all. They run a cycling hotel and training base near Lake Banyoles, just north of Girona. However, I think they’re at home in this list because they offer such a comprehensive service that staying with them will allow you to have a cycling holiday, assuming that’s what you’re looking for!

Girona Cycling SL is run by Gareth and Fiona and I’m a big fan of the energy and passion they put into what they do. Just speak with them and you’ll immediately get a feel for their dedication. As Fiona says, “When other training camp companies plan a camp in this area, they ask for our help and guidance. We are here to help. This is a vocation not a job for us.”

Between them, this dynamic team offer everything from sports massage to yoga, cycle coaching and bike fitting. They are also passionate about sustainability and run their whole outfit at a fraction of the carbon footprint most hotels run at. Importantly, most guests don’t even notice!

Girona province, Spain

A week in June, staying at their countryside idyll. If we were looking for a holiday, we’d keep things leisurely: pick their brains over breakfast about the best route for the day and then head off into the Catalan countryside, ensuring we were back to cool off in the pool before temperatures got too feisty.

If we were after a more hardcore cycling camp, we’d make sure we got organised and liaise with them before arriving to match our training plan with rides they could suggest: we’d get them to pick rides to match our training goals (from their catalogue of 150 GPS routes!) and then ensure the post ride routine included some deep stretching and breathing work on top of the all-important pool time!

9. Spain: Sierra Sports & Tours

Cyclist with Sierra Sports and Tours in Spain

Paul d’Andrea runs Sierra Sports & Tour and is originally from Australia but has lived in Spain for many years. What I think is great about Paul is that he is at the heart of his business and is a meticulous kind of a guy, the sort of person you can trust to do what he says he’s going to do.

Sierra’s trips are definitely worth considering if you are looking for flexibility with your trip as they offer many different kinds of trip within Spain. Sierra are also great for small groups (four or more) wanting a bespoke experience without a big premium. Paul is extremely open about his pricing – you can read more about their fully-guided, self-guided, partially-guided and private trips here.

Self-guided tour of Girona and the Costa Brava

This cycling trip takes you to Girona and through the beautiful regions surrounding it. You can choose between 6, 9 and 12 night packages that take in classic climbs and coastal regions as well as inland lakes and mountains.

Sierra will take care of all the hotel bookings and luggage transfer so all you need to do is ride. You can choose any start date between 1 March and 31 October and there’s a 24 hour contact number in case of emergencies.

10. Switzerland: Kudos Cycling

Cyclists climb the Sanetsch Pass, Switzerland

Anthony is a Brit who’s lived in Verbier since 2014. Switzerland is home and speaking to him, you can tell he absolutely loves it.

Anthony gets what cyclists want from their precious holidays and also knows how to provide it.

I’ve always felt Switzerland is a bit of black hole when it comes to knowing where to go and where to ride. Anthony’s knowledge and passion for Switzerland will help you right out of that hole in double-quick time!

Switzerland

Introduction to the Swiss Alps

If you’ve never ridden the Swiss Alps before, Kudos Cycling’s Intro to the Alps tour is – not surprisingly –  the perfect introduction!

This six day tour is thoughtfully designed to build confidence and skill on alpine roads, with tailored training rides and routes on quiet roads and through undulating vineyards before building up to bigger challenging climbs.

With the help of professional coaches you’ll become an expert in managing the weather and terrain, to explore the beauty of the region in a safe and friendly group environment.

You’ll get a branded Katusha cycling jersey in your Kudos Cycling welcome pack too, as a permanent memento of your cycling holiday in the Swiss Alps.

11. UK: Pedal Britain

Cyclists in Cornwall

Darren Ball set up Pedal Britain to fill a particular gap – he wants to help cyclists do point to point tours in a way he would like to do them himself if he was on a cycling holiday.

In practical terms, that means things like not being forced to ride at a particular pace and it means guides that really care (and aren’t just having a holiday themselves!).

I love the fact he places such importance and recognition on the fact that these are routes and challenges people plan and aim for for months (if not years) and he wants to do them “right”. For example he knows someone probably won’t do a Land’s End to John O’Groats more than once in their life and so he wants to ensure he gives his clients a fantastic experience.

UK including Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

Land’s End to John O’Groats

As far as bucket list cycling holidays in the UK go, Land’s End to John O’Groats has to be it. Pedal Britain’s fully guided and supported 16 day tour has 14 days of cycling across the UK’s most spectacular landscapes.

You’ll cover an average daily distance of 116 kilometres with a total of 10,568 metres of climbing, making unforgettable memories along the way.

Ride from Cornwall onto Dartmoor and over the Severn Bridge into Wales, before heading north into the Lake District and crossing the border to Scotland. The higher you ride the more wild and rugged it gets.

Don’t worry about carrying your stuff, as Pedal Britain will do that for you. All you really have to do: ride, sleep, eat repeat!

12. bike tour japan.

Bikes by a beach in Japan

When I first started talking to Rob from Bike Tour Japan, my first thought was “this guy really knows Japan”.

Throughout our various conversations I really liked the fact his emphasis is on creating holidays that show cyclists the best that Japan has to offer – not necessarily just the most famous parts.

His flexible attitude towards creating holidays that fit in with his clients’ schedules and budgets is also impressive. After all, if you’re going to travel across the world for what might be a once-in-a-lifetime trip, you want to make sure you’re in the right hands.

Tour of the Japanese Alps

With a name like ‘Japanese Alps Tour – Epic Volcanoes & Ancient Roads’ and 3,200 metres climbing over 160 kilometres, you know it’s going to be up there with the best cycling routes in the world.

This eight day tour is Bike Tour Japan’s “most challenging and ambitious cycling adventure” taking in the breathtaking mountains of central Japan.

Get through the gruelling climbs (including Mt Norikura, the highest road in the country), and you can enjoy the ridiculous descents (60 kilometres on the way back down from Mt Norikura!) before recharging your tired legs in the ancient outdoor hot-spring baths

There’s a reason it’s been given a 5/5 difficulty rating… and a reason we 5/5 want to ride it.

13. Bici Bucerias

Beaches on Banderas Bay Mexico perfect for post ride recovery

I love what Bici Bucerias offers; the chance to get shown around a beautiful corner of Mexico by local cyclists that know the best roads, beauty spots and places for coffee.

Bici Bucerias is run by Joel and Gillian who have lived here for many years. With them you can do anything from a food tour by e-bike to a challenging, multi-day ride through Mexico.

One of Bici Bucerias’ many day rides from Bucerias. Depending on how we were feeling, we’d select between a moderate 2.5 hours to a 10+ hour gruelling ride over gravel, asphalt and cobbles to Las Palmas and the infamous La Bufa climb.

Special mention

And finally, they’re not exactly a cycling holiday provider, but I do just want to finish by mentioning our friends at Bike Van . Their gorgeous camper vans are custom fitted with fantastic bike storage and allow cyclists the opportunity to have a cycling holiday almost anywhere they fancy! You can read more about what they do in our article with them here.

It’s been a lot of fun putting this list together and it reminds me how grateful I am to have worked with such a range of fantastic businesses this year.

The best destinations for bike tours in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland

The beauty of starting a bike tour in your home country is that you don’t have to take a flight and you can decide how far you want to ride. Along the Elbe bicycle route, for instance, you can ride specific sections of the route, such as Magdeburg to Hamburg or Dresden to Prague. This makes planning easier and is perfect for those with less experience or a smaller budget for their summer vacation . Let’s take a look at a few of our favorite bike tours in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Germany: Berlin to Copenhagen

Germany: munich to lake garda, austria: vienna to budapest, austria: graz to maribor.

  • Switzerland: Andermatt to Konstanz
  • Duration: 9 days
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Highlights: The Berlin Wall Trail and the ferry crossing to Denmark

Fun fact: Copenhagen is just 650 kilometers from Berlin. Although this route is long, it’s also easy thanks to the flat geography of northern Germany. The ferry from Rostock to Gedser also lets you knock a few kilometers off the total trip. The Mecklenburg Lake District offers pure relaxation, while Denmark’s impressive bridges will get your heart going – the wind is strong when you’re high above the waves. If you'd like to extend your trip a little, the Swedish city of Malmö is just 40 minutes away from Copenhagen by train.

  • Duration: 8 days
  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
  • Highlights: Ötzi the Iceman at the South Tyrol Museum of Archeology in Bolzano and Buonconsiglio Castle in Trento

From the Isar River across ice-age glaciers to the crystal-clear Lake Garda, this tour is themed around water — in all its forms. Not only that, it takes you through three countries. On this 375-kilometer route, you’ll traverse the Alps, biking through the Tyrolean Inn valley toward Brixen and Bolzano through to Riva del Garda, a picturesque town on Lake Garda. Some of the more challenging sections, such as the Brenner Pass climb, can be tackled by bus or by train.

  • Duration: 7–8 days
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate
  • Highlights: Žitný ostrov, the Roman fort Celamantia and Esztergom Basilica

The Danube bicycle route is approximately 275 kilometers long and leads you along the blue Danube from Vienna to Budapest, via Bratislava. The route will take you through riparian woodlands and to UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites and idyllic villages such as Szentendre, Hungary. For fans of nature and history, it’s the perfect bicycling vacation. You can plan your bicycling trip yourself or book it as a complete package including hotel and luggage service for less than €600, depending on what kind of offers you find.

  • Duration: 3–5 days
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Highlights: Steirisches Vulkanland and Ptuj, the oldest city in Slovenia

On this 234-kilometer circular bicycling route, you’ll ride through some of the most beautiful wine regions that Austria and Slovenia have to offer. Plus, enjoy wonderful sights, from Graz’s Old Town to the banks of the Drava River. Be ready for some steep climbs around Jeruzalem! If your legs are a little too sore when you reach Maribor, you can take the train back to Graz in about an hour and for less than €10.

Switzerland: Andermatt to Konstanz

  • Duration: 5–6 days
  • Difficulty: Very challenging
  • Highlights: Chur Old Town and the Rhine Delta

The entire Rhine Cycle Route stretches from the Swiss village of Andermatt to Rotterdam in the Netherlands. It’s no surprise, then, that the 1,500-kilometer route is split into stages. The first stage, from Andermatt to Konstanz, goes through the Swiss Alps and reaches heights of 2,044 meters, so bicycling expertise and plenty of stamina are a must! The effort is certainly worth it though: Once you complete the tour, you can enjoy a boat trip on Lake Constance or take it easy on the beach.

The best destinations for bike tours in Europe

There are few things to plan before getting onto your bike. Choosing a destination can actually be one of the biggest challenges. That’s why we’ve put together a list of our recommendations for the best countries and routes for your bicycling vacation.

Croatia: Split to Dubrovnik

France: champagne , belgium: bruges to amsterdam, italy: pisa to rome, greece: athens and the peloponnese .

  • Highlights: The islands of Hvar and Korčula

With its varied architecture, olive groves, and historical cities, Croatia is a relaxing and picturesque destination for your bicycling trip. The Adriatic Sea is perfect for swimming, and rugged cliffs offer awe-inspiring views. On the Dalmatian Coast, wineries, fishing villages, and medieval sites are waiting to be explored.

  • Duration: 6 days
  • Highlights: Routes along the Marne River and the Moët & Chandon wine cellars

It should come as no surprise that France is one of the most popular travel destinations for gourmands and wine connoisseurs. Here, you can ride from one winery to the next, passing lavender fields and stopping off in one of many picturesque cafés.

Fans of extreme bike tours will love the L’Étape du Tour, a one-day event where amateur cyclists attempt one of the Tour de France’s mountain stages.

  • Highlights: Kinderdijk with its 19 majestic windmills

Bike tours in Belgium are particularly well suited to beginners or families with children – and for good reason. The landscape is almost entirely flat, and the country’s infrastructure is extremely bike-friendly.

Take a detour to the Netherlands to check another destination off your bucket list. The country’s bicycling network features a junction number system and is more than 32,000 kilometers long. Discover historical towns, old churches, breweries, and the beauty of the Dutch coast.

  • Duration: 7–9 days
  • Difficulty: Moderate to difficult
  • Highlights: The Via Francigena and the medieval city of Montalcino

If you’re looking for a European destination for your bike tour, then you should definitely consider Italy. The country’s diverse geography means that you can choose between beaches, lakes, mountains, and ancient cities — or some of each.

You can also discover part of the Via Francigena, a long pilgrimage route leading from the English city of Canterbury over the Swiss border and toward Rome.

  • Highlights: Poros and the Aegean Sea

Don’t be put off by the summer heat — Greece is worth exploring by bike. This bike tour will take you to sites of the ancient world and wondrous sandy beaches that are perfect for cooling off in the sea.

Take a few days to explore the capital city of Athens before continuing on to the Peloponnese, where bicycle routes snake past the historical sites of Mycenae and Sparta.

How to plan a bike tour in Europe

When it comes to planning a successful bike tour, planning and preparation are crucial. The questions below should help you get ready for your trip:

Do I want to do a guided bike tour or an individual one?

The first thing you should think about is whether you prefer to go on a guided tour or go solo.

Individual tours let you set your own pace and take your time to do some sightseeing. It will just be you, and you should be comfortable discovering new places on your own.

Guided tours, on the other hand, are better if you want to be in a group and have a local tour guide. You’ll have a little less flexibility, but you’ll be able to socialize more easily.

Will I be taking my own bike or will I rent one?

The choice of renting a bike or bringing your own depends on various factors such as logistics, costs, and personal preferences. Many guided tours include bike rental in the package.

If you want to take your bike with you on a flight, you need a specially sized box or bag. There are also certain providers, such as Pamyra , who can organize transportation for you for a fee.

If you prefer to save yourself the transportation expense and rent a bike, do some research on local providers to compare prices and availability.

What should I bring on a bike tour?

The next step is to organize the basic equipment for your bike tour. This checklist will see you safely on your way:

  • Bicycle luggage rack
  • Handlebar bag
  • Rain protection
  • Front and rear lights
  • Reflective vest
  • Bicycle lock
  • Bicycle repair kit
  • Bicycle bags, including refillable water bottles

It’s common for a transporter service to be provided on guided tours. This means that there’s always someone to call on in case you get a flat tire.

Before booking a tour, you should always check what is and isn’t included. You can find a comprehensive bike tour checklist on the ADFC website.

How to plan a bicycling vacation with the family

It’s time to swap the screens for fresh air and nature! A bicycling vacation is a great way to get your kids outside and to spend time together as a family. Vacations abroad also give even young kids a taste of foreign languages, cuisine, and cultures.

If you’re planning your first family bicycling vacation, make sure to choose easy terrain and shorter routes. Don’t forget to give yourself plenty of time for breaks and a variety of different stops. If you want a challenge but other members of your family don’t, you can organize e-bikes for those who are less enthusiastic about cycling. That way, you can all tackle those trickier routes together.

And don’t forget about travel insurance . Having the right travel health insurance will take a lot of the potential stress out of a family vacation.

How to plan a bicycling vacation in a group

Group bicycling vacations are great for getting together with your friends or meeting new people who share your interests. There’s something for everyone, too: Tours are offered all over Europe, so you can get to know your companions better over regional delicacies and a glass of wine after a day’s ride.

There are various websites that let you enter specific information and destinations to find the right trip options for you. We recommend the route planner Komoot , which also has an app for when you’re out on the road.

Do I need insurance for a bicycling vacation?

It’s always worth having bike insurance in Europe if you’re using your own bike. It’s frustrating enough if your bike gets stolen, damaged, or lost. But if you’re left covering the costs, then it can really ruin your perfect bicycling vacation.

Not sure where to get bike insurance? N26 Insurance lets you protect what’s important to you. Simply open the N26 app, go to the Explore tab, and choose the insurance that’s right for you.

How do I plan a bike tour overseas?

Choosing your destination is one of the most important parts of organizing a bike tour. Be sure to pick a trip that will match your/your group’s abilities. It’s also a good idea to choose somewhere that you’re keen to explore. Next, try and get in some cycling prep before you leave so you build up your stamina for the real deal. Finally, set a budget and savings goal , so you can pay for the trip you want without any stress.

How do I plan a day bike trip?

A day trip is a great way to squeeze in some cycling time, or to introduce the hobby to friends or members of your family. Try googling “cycle routes near me” for inspiration—and make sure the length and terrain of the route is suitable for everyone joining you. Don’t forget to plan stops for snacks, toilet breaks, and lookout spots to take in any views. Circular routes are convenient to minimize taxis or public transport. Finally, check the weather, as you’ll want to make sure you have suitable clothing.

How far should I cycle daily on a bike tour?

The right daily distance for your bike tour will depend on your fitness and how often you cycle. While you might want to take on a challenge, you don’t want to injure yourself and not be able to enjoy the vacation. It’s a smart idea to do several shorter days during your bike tour, rather than just a few longer days. The average cyclist should be able to take on about 60km a day. If you’re more experienced, you could try a bit further and build up from there.

How should I train for a cycling holiday?

To make sure you’re ready for the physical challenges of a bike tour, it’s best to start training early. Regular, manageable cycling sessions are best. If you can get into the great outdoors, that will help prepare you for the real thing. If that’s not an option, a stationary bike at home or at the gym is still helpful. Don’t forget to stretch and add rest days to give you time to recover. Make a note of the distances you cover and try to add a little more each week, until you reach your target.

How can N26 help me prepare for my bike tour?

N26 is the perfect bike tour companion. For those truly epic, once-in-a-lifetime destinations, you want to leave your itinerary to the experts. Whether your dream is to see the Big Five on an African Safari, trek tall mountains, explore European cities, or something even wilder, a group tour is the easiest way to do it.

However, picking the wrong group tour company is the quickest way to ruin your trip. Make sure you choose a tour company that aligns with your goals and travel styles. Do you want an intimate group tour or do you prefer to make lots of new friends in a big group? Does the price line up with what you like (luxury vs. budget)? Is the itinerary going to all the places you want to see?

We’ve done the research and found the very best group travel tour companies for 2024 for every type of traveler.

5 of the best walks in Europe – The Great Walks of Europe

Hiking in the Alps

Going on an overseas holiday is always exciting, especially these days as most of us have been waiting a long time to do it. But what if you’re after a more meaningful travel experience than lying by the pool? For anyone seeking a truly rewarding vacation, the  Great Walks of Europe offer a powerful journey of rediscovery after the emotional and spiritual challenges of the past few years.

Guided group walking tours  with an experienced leader are about much more than simply walking from point A to point B. They provide income for locals in regional towns, many of which have been hit hard financially by border closures, and offer not just physical but also mental health benefits. When you walk with a group, the journey is shared, and the way ahead is easier with friends by your side.

Intrepid’s Great Walks of Europe offer a sustainable way to see some of the world’s most spectacular scenery, with the wind in your hair and the sun (and a smile) on your face. With your luggage transferred from one point to the next and an expert leader to guide the way, all you need is a pair of good walking shoes, a daypack and a sense of adventure to enjoy the following European walks.

Here are 5 of the best walks in Europe

1. mont blanc (the easy way).

Perhaps surprisingly, you don’t need to be an expert hiker to tackle mighty Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe. On a small group  Mont Blanc Highlights  tour with an experienced International Mountain Leader, it’s possible to cut out the tiring climbs without missing a moment of the region’s scenic beauty. With an ingenious combination of cable car rides and local knowledge, your leader will share the magic of hiking Mont Blanc with the group.

On daily walking adventures from your home base at a historic hotel in the heart of Chamonix, surrounded by snow-capped peaks, you’ll hike along the foot of the Bionnassay glacier, cross a Himalayan style suspension bridge, and see the rocky needles of Mont Blanc piercing the sky above. With a free day in Chamonix halfway through the trip to rest your legs and discover the region your way, this centre-based trip offers the perfect mix of time spent together and apart and is a hit with adventurous solo female travellers.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT MONT BLANC WALKING TRIP FOR YOU

2. Camino de Santiago

best cycling tour europe

Can’t decide whether you want a cultural odyssey, physical challenge, religious pilgrimage, or the chance to hang out with interesting travel companions? The Walk the Camino de Santiago tour was created especially for you. This seven-day life-affirming small group hiking adventure takes in the final section of Spain’s Camino de Santiago, the most iconic part of the trail. Walking through traditional countryside, quaint hamlets, Roman ruins and more, you’ll fuel up on traditional Galician specialties like polbo a feira octopus in Melide, cheese in Arzua and sample Queimada, which involves casting a spell so special powers are transferred to those who sip the local brew.

Your journey ends in the ancient city of Santiago de Compostela where you’ll collect your official Camino de Santiago certificate, the Compostela, which is only available to those who complete the minimum 100km (62 miles) of this iconic Great Walk. Time your arrival for before noon and you can enter the cathedral and participate in the pilgrims’ mass where the names of all those who have collected their Camino certificates in the last 24 hours are read aloud – including yours.

3. Hadrian’s Wall

best cycling tour europe

Hadrian’s Wall is one of the most classical long-distance hikes in the United Kingdom, rightfully earning its place within the Great Walks of Europe. The ancient Roman ruins of Hadrian’s Wall, the largest section of which is located in the spectacular Northumberland National Park, are Britain’s largest archaeological feature and stretch along an unbroken 135 km (84 mile) footpath from one coast of England to the other.

With an experienced local guide sharing stories along the way, history comes alive and the miles fly by on the Walk Hadrian’s Wall Highlights tour as you walk from the western outpost of Carlisle to the eastern reaches at Heddon-on-the-Wall near Newcastle upon Tyne. You’ll be walking at a reasonable but not strenuous pace, on a well-designed itinerary that uses the region’s prevailing winds to give you a boost along the trail. With a day at leisure to explore the charming town of Cholleford and plenty of time to take photos along the way, this seven-day walking tour celebrates the unique beauty and history of this walk in equal measure.

4. The Dolomites

best cycling tour europe

Hiking in the Dolomites  is a Great Walk that’s popular with travellers from around the world. This eight-day round-trip guided group tour departs from Venice, one of Europe’s most iconic cities and the perfect spot for an extended pre- or post-tour stay to make your holiday last longer. After a couple of hours’ drive, you’ll arrive in the Italian town of Dobbiaco which is the perfect jumping off point for some of the Dolomites best walks which take in the sheer rock walls, deep valleys and lush pastures of the northern Italian Alps.

Highlights include the Three Peaks of Lavaredo loop, a full day walk which is widely regarded as the Dolomites’ most scenic hike, and Europe’s most incredible naturally formed earth pyramids. After a well-earned sleep in on the penultimate morning of the trip, you’ll settle back to enjoy a ‘merenda Tirolese’ picnic, a traditional meal eaten by farmers, overlooking sparkling Toblacher See lake with a glass of Schiava, a typical wine from the region, in hand to toast your amazing Dolomites adventure.

DISCOVER SOME OF ITALY’S BEST ACTIVE ADVENTURES

5. Tour du Mont Blanc

Lace up your hiking boots and get ready for one of Europe’s most famous and most beautiful long-distance treks. Hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc is Intrepid’s most popular Great Walk of Europe and features more snow-capped peaks, lakes, glaciers, and mountain pastures than you can point a camera at.

With daily luggage transport and comfortable accommodation ranging from historic hotels to scenic alpine huts to look forward to at the end of each day, this is your chance to tackle one of the more demanding Great Walks of Europe with an enthusiastic and encouraging International Mountain Guide by your side (and cable car rides along the way to make your journey easier). If you’re fit and in good health, the Tour du Mont Blanc shouldn’t be missed – but there’s a catch. If you want to do this walk any time soon, you’ll have to get in quick as many departures have already almost sold out!

Start from Bucharest , travelling northward through the Carpathian mountains to Transylvania, and make a mandatory stop at Bran Castle (claimed to be the old stomping grounds of Dracula himself).

Take the Transfagarasan mountain road, one of the most scenic routes in the world, towards the age-old cities and countless castles of Sibu, Brasov and Sighisoara. Then set course to the unexplored architectural gems of Timisoara.

Carry on towards the tranquil hot springs and hip ruin pubs of bustling Budapest, and be prepared to stay at least a few days. Depart for Bratislava – a capital full of surprises – from where it's only an hour further to the coffeehouses and eclectic architecture of Vienna .

  • Best for: Anyone looking for a break from the conventional tourism of western Europe.
  • How long: 7–12 days.
  • Insider tip: Exercise caution when driving through tunnels. Though the weather outside may be fine, tunnels are often slippery.

Start in Braga , before driving south to the medieval town of Guimarães , a UNESCO World Heritage site. Then it’s onward to the breathtaking "second-city" of Porto , though it's nothing less than first-rate. Check here for the best places to stay in Porto .

Drive east to the vineyards and steep valleys of Penafiel and Amarante before hitting the coastal road to the vast white beaches of Figueira da Foz - among the best beaches in Portugal . From here it’s on to Peniche, Ericeira and then Lisbon : the country's vibrant capital that's on course to beat out Berlin for Europe’s coolest city. Check out the best areas to stay in Lisbon as well as the best places to eat to match your taste.

Drive south to Sagres , Arrifana and Carrapateira. After soaking up the sun on the picturesque shores of the Algarve, wrap this road trip up in the Mediterranean dreamland otherwise known as Faro .

If you’ve still got itchy feet when you reach Faro, take the ferry from nearby Algeciras in Spain to Morocco . Imagine the satisfaction of parking your ride in the desert village of Merzouga, before exploring the Sahara – that's right, it would feel awesome.

  • Best for: Beach bums and oenophiles.
  • How long: At least 10–14 days.
  • Insider tip: As Portugal is among the more affordable destinations in Western Europe, this can be an especially great trip for travellers on a budget .

6. High-altitude adventure on Germany's Alpine Road

The Alpenstrasse, or Alpine Road, is your ticket to a bonafide Bavarian odyssey: a safe route through the unforgettable vistas of Germany 's high-altitude meadows, mountains, crystal-clear lakes and cosy village restaurants. Start lakeside at Lindau on the Bodensee and head to Oberstaufen for a therapeutic beauty treatment in the country’s “Capital of Wellness”.

Venture eastwards to the Breitachklamm gorge, where the river Breitach cuts through verdant cliffs and colossal boulders. Carry on to the town of Füssen – famous for its violin makers – stopping along the way at any quaint Alpine villages you please. The iconic Neuschwanstein Castle , the same structure that inspired Walt Disney to build his own version for Cinderella, isn’t far off either - one of those places even more beautiful in winter.

Speaking of winter, hit the slopes of Garmisch-Partenkirchen for some serious skiing if the season’s right. Stop at Benediktbeuern on your way to the medieval town of Bad Tölz, then up through the stunning wilderness scenes of the Chiemgau Alps before ending in the regional capital of Munich . If you’re missing the mountain roads already, carry on to Salzburg in Austria and stop in the ice caves of Werfen on the way.

Lindau to Oberstaufen

  • Best for: Outdoorsy types.
  • How long: 5–8 days.
  • Insider tip: Give your road trip an extra purpose and pack your skis or snowboard. Garmisch-Partenkirchen ski season starts early December and ends early May. In the summer months, you can go hiking or climbing instead.

Start in Athens and take the coastal roads south through the Athenian Riviera to Sounion, situated at the tip the Attic peninsula. Watch a sunset at the Temple of Poseidon, then drive northward through mythic mountains to the fortress of Kórinthos before posting up in the legendary city of Mycenae (home of Homeric heroes).

If you’re craving a luxurious seaside stay, look no further than the resort town of Nafplio. If not, carry onwards through the unforgiving landscapes to Mystra, the cultural and political capital of Byzantium.

Want more? Then it’s on to Olympia, sporting grounds of the ancients, and the mystic ruins of Delphi. Loop back towards Athens, approaching the city from the north.

  • Best for: Sun-worshippers,and anyone who’s ever read Homer or watched overly action-packed flicks such as Troy and 300 .
  • How long: 5–10 days, though it’s easy to trim a version of this road trip down to a long weekend.
  • Insider tip: If you’re parking in central Athens keep an eye out for coloured parking spaces – these are reserved for locals, so if you park here you’ll get a ticket.

Leave the hectic pace of England ’s capital London behind. Make for Oxford, home of the world’s oldest English-language university, and a place of storied pubs where the likes of J.R.R Tolkien and Lewis Carrol regularly wet their whistles.

If you’ve got the time, it’s a quick drive to the cottages of the Cotswolds - check our guide to the prettiest villages to visit . If not, cruise up to Stratford-Upon-Avon, birthplace of Shakespeare.

Take the two-and-a-half-hour drive north to Manchester for a city fix and watch a football match. Carry on north to the Lake District National Park, one of the most beautiful places in England . Drink in the scenery that inspired England’s finest romantics, then head across the Yorkshire dales to the quirky medieval lanes of York, founded by the Romans nearly 2000 years ago.

From there it's north again past tiny villages to the majestic wonders of Edinburgh . If you’re craving the rugged comforts of the highlands go to Stirling, Inverness, or the Western Isles – worth the drive indeed. And if you are going by electric car, check out this great guide to plan your electric car road trip in Britain .

London to Inverness

  • Best for: Locals that want to feel like foreigners, and foreigners that want to feel like locals.
  • How long: 5–10 days.
  • Insider tip: Destinations like Stratford-Upon-Avon and York (not to mention London) are true tourist hotspots in the summer. Plan your road trip for spring or autumn and you’ll enjoy the beautiful scenery along with fewer crowds.

Hit the gas in the Sicilian capital of Palermo, the biggest historic centre in Italy after Rome and arguably the country’s most chaotic metropolis.

Adventure onwards along the Tyrrhenian coast to the golden sands of Cefalù – a great holiday spot for families, with a mellow medieval town centre to boot.

Get to the island’s heartland and the ancient city of Enna. Surrounded by cliffs on all sides, and built atop a massive hill, you'll feel as though you've walked on the set of Game of Thrones . Head southeast to the shores of the Ionian Sea and dock in Siracusa, once the most important in the western world while under ancient Greek rule with much of its historic architecture intact.

Then it’s up to Catania for a trip to molten Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano on the entire European continent.

Finish the trip in Messina, or ferry across into the Italian province of Calabria where rustic mountain villages, friendly locals and the idyllic sands of Tropea and Pizzo await – refreshingly devoid of foreigners.

  • Best for: Anyone looking for a truly authentic Italian experience, and of course, hardcore foodies.
  • How long : 6–12 days.
  • Insider tip: Remember that southern Italy can get very hot in July and August. Avoid the heat of the day with a leisurely lunch (go easy on the wine if you’re driving!) and travel in the early morning or evening instead.
