Belize Gets A New Logo! Yay or Nay?
January 15, 2013 By Lorenzo Gonzalez 24 Comments
After 26 years, the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) gets a new logo.
I set out to find out what everyone thought of the change and the results were interesting. Many are excited for the change, while others criticize it dearly.
Let’s start off with the core positives: the yays!
1. the colors are vibrant and true to the caribbean..
Belize is certainly multi-colored. Both Candice and Lindsey mentioned they love the bright colors and I completely agree with them. If you take a stroll around Caye Caulker or Placencia you’ll unquestionably run into a wide assortment of vivid shades – if it isn’t the colorful houses, picket fences and road signs; it’s the beautiful natural environment.
2. The retro look is awesome.
Brendan said he loves old school posters and Belize’s travel poster looks clean and crisp. This is true, vintage posters are loved by travel enthusiasts and this new promotion will strike a chord with fellow travelers. Kudos to the BTB in going with a classic vibe which definitely takes advantage of this trend. If you want to take a look at a great collection of vintage travel posters, check out Michael’s top picks .
Now for the main negatives: the nays!
1. it’s too unoriginal. aside from it been done before, if you take a look at many other destinations’ logos, you can say it’s actually being done too much..
One country that has perfectly implemented bold colorful text into their logo is Guatemala. However, what really completes their logo is how they include all the major aspects that make Guatemala a great travel destination – the Maya temples, Volcanoes and Lakes. If Belize was following the bold and colorful text path, shouldn’t they have at least included things that make travel to Belize unique?
1. The retro look is cool but it is a miss. It unfortunately looks dated in a bad way.
Ayngelina goes on to say that vintage posters work well for destinations that people are very familiar with, such as London, Paris, and Rome. The issue with Belize is that most people don’t know much about it and as a result, showing a vintage poster with a bird doesn’t inspire people to visit Belize over any other country. And after seeing other vintage travel posters, I am forced to look at Belize’s one and say… “meh, it really isn’t too impressive.” It doesn’t pop like others I’ve come across.
My conclusion
It’s OK but I’m not totally sold on it.
To quote one of my readers, “the beauty of Belize and all its diverseness can’t be captured simply with the toucan.”
I personally love toucans, but the issue is that there needs to be a bigger push to showcase Belize’s culture and nature. So dear BTB, get back to the drawing board and take a hint from the video that Belikin Beer produced – there’s a reason why it went viral.
P.s. I’m certain I won’t miss the slogan: “Mother Nature’s Best Kept Secret.” What are your thoughts about Belize’s new logo?

Nice bird, but the font makes me think of the Philippines. Clean, but not original. Feel lacking.

The Belize logo has been chosen as a finalist for the “One Show Design” 2013 awards, in the category of “Brand Identity – Logo Design.” The Belize Tourism Board and its Advertising and Online Agency, Olson, created the Belize logo as a part of a re-branding of Belize’s identity.

It’s a bit on the plain side, but that’s what a logo ought to be anyway–add too many details, and they get lost. I like how simple it is, and it’s appropriate to include the toucan, as it’s the national bird of Belize and easily recognizable. Truth be told, I’m not sure how many foreigners would even recognize an image of the Mayan ruins–most don’t even know where Belize is located. Still, valid assessment 🙂

I’m not sold on it, either. And the tag line definitely lets them fill in the blank (as in “Discover how to be WHAT?”), but I don’t really like it.

Discover to be what ever you want..let me break it down to you..means discover how be in love..discover how be mesmerize..discover how to be quench etc..when you visit belize..you can discover how to be..when the commercial comes out then i believe you and everybody else will understand..until then discover how to undertand and relax..
Woa! (as I rummage through my ancient files…) I truly hafta laugh. “26 years” you say? Shoot, back when I first started running trips to Belize (in ’85) there WAS no BTB (nor guidebook, nor a single “You’d Better Belize It!” t-shirt) Indeed, few had even HEARD of the tiny nation of Belize (I’d have to say “used to be British Honduras”), not to mention the little civil war going on back then in nearby Nicaragua (indeed, in those days “Central America” was synonymous with “contras” on the 6pm news).
But what’s truly amazing – that new toucan logo is nearly IDENTICAL to my “Imagine Belize” logo back in those ancient times. Too bad all my old brochures are tucked in the dark corners of my 5′ x 6′ storage locker in Seattle – as I now live here in Vietnam.
That’s interesting. Would love to see your logo 🙂
Yep, wish that I had a copy. But bear in mind that in those days, we didn’t have digital, so the only things I have left are a few stray paper brochures I saved from those early days of my tour biz. And even those, are buried in the dark (and by now damp) of my storage locker in Seattle.
Personally, I like the new BTB logo – especially the colors. I think it aptly connotes the playful “No problem, Mon” spirit of Belize. Not sure how you’d otherwise incorporate all the many faces of the tiny nation into a single logo. Logos are completely different than a 1.5 minute video – they’re meant to SYMBOLIZE in the simplest way possible – so as to to be easily memorable. Think: Nike. 😉
The colors are great on the new logo!
Thanks for commenting Micheal!
Nice work on the article. As to what belikin beer said nice line as well but the difference is that belikin did a commercial and not a logo make over. You missed the point. You are comparing apples to bananas. When BTB put out its commercial then you can compare and tell BTB go back to the drawing board..
Note that I mention that they need to make a bigger push towards showcasing Belize’s culture and nature. That’s my comparison to Belikin’s commercial. Take a look at Guatemala’s logo for instance, it features their heritage and natural environment.
Well i believe that bigger push towards showcasing belize will be in btb commercial..i have seen a glimpse of it and from what i saw it’s pretty awesome..

I would love to see it when it’s completed. Thanks for commenting,
Nice balanced article. Also.. cheers for your last line ;), we appreciate it.
That’s a very awesome logo I need to admit. So colorful and shaped nicely ;-). “Like” from me.
Yeah, I love the colors!

The new Belize tourism logo
Basically, the tourism logo of the country serves to represent it. It’s like the national flag, but aimed at tourists, not governments and geography students. The creation of such a design is a massive responsibility and there are always people who are rooting for or against a certain logo design as there is always someone who thinks the design could be improved. A few years back we shared here a logo set of famous tourism logo designs of 50 countries and regions. But designs get old and have to be changed or at least refined.
This is the old tourism logo of Belize:

The new one was announced on 11th January 2013. It may seem similar based on the simplistic logotype of the name of the country and the presence of the toucan. However, it is different. This is the new tourism logo design of Belize and you can find all the information concerning the new design in the video below.

Although the logo design looks nice when presented in a larger size, one must bear in mind that when published in a smaller size the brushes as detail will not be visible. However, the tourism logo is colourful and cheerful. The main geometrical figure used is the circle, and the colours are chosen to represent parts of the nature of Belize.
You can find all the information concerning the new design in the video below.

The best tourist board logos
Ready to travel? Here are the best tourist board logos.
Tourist boards play a vital role in inspiring travellers to visit their destination, whether they’re telling you about the hottest new festivals and bars, or working with celebrities, writers and influencers to spread the word. In order to stand out and represent their country, city or region, they need an eye-catching logo: something that fits the destination and feels modern. It then gets plastered over all kinds of promotional materials, from pens and memory sticks to t-shirts and posters.
Sometimes, they firmly fit the trends of their launch period, perhaps having a distinct ‘ iconic 80s logos ’ feel, but other times they remain relevant for decades to come – see New York or Rotterdam for proof.
We’ve picked the best tourist board logos to give you wanderlust; we looked for the best logos that feel custom-made for the destination, do something a bit different, and would look just as good on a keyring as on a billboard, whether they’re made by the best logo designer or not.
01. PROMPERU (Peru)
This South American country is best known for its archaeology: Machu Picchu, the mysterious Nazca lines, the circular Incan terraces of Moray, and the Temple of the Sun in Cusco. That’s why we’re not surprised to see a hand-drawn wordmark that echoes the creativity of Peru, and has been in place since 2011, courtesy of Futurebrand , for use in tourism and trade. The circular pattern on the letter ‘P’ could also make you think of a fossil, or the curve of a clay pot.
So, what else could they have chosen to incorporate? Peru’s food scene is also increasingly popular, with visitors flocking to taste ceviche (fish cooked in lime juice) and Pisco sours (cocktails with egg white), but let’s face it: those wouldn’t really work in a logo, especially if you’re trying to appeal to vegans. We’re glad they stuck to the archaeological theme and kept it simple.
02. Brand Colombia
Remarketing a country that has had political struggles isn’t easy, but Brand Colombia may have cracked it from a design perspective – this major tourism and business campaign launched in 2012, with a logo that mirrors the country’s eclectic mix. Colombian companies Sancho BBDO and Señor López were behind the identity, whilst advertising partners included JWT .
At the time of the launch, Claudia Hoyos, from Marca País Colombia , said: "Our greatest strength is in our megadiversity… we have many regions, cultures, accents and dialects, many landscapes and different climates."
Get the Creative Bloq Newsletter
Daily design news, reviews, how-tos and more, as picked by the editors.
Therefore, there are different coloured versions of the logo; as Hoyos puts it, "violet represents the variety of flowers we have, especially the orchid, our national symbol," with each region and theme represented by simple geometrical shapes, like a drum for music. Reducing Colombia to 'CO' isn’t just a case of saving space: it shows the ISO country code, recognised all over the world. However, travel industry website Skift didn’t approve, saying the new identity was "all over the place".
03. Turespaña (Spain)
This logo for Turespaña is very much a product of its time, so it doesn’t look as effective today, but we couldn’t resist adding it to the mix – Spain even commissioned artist Joan Miró to design it in 1983. Art tourism is a huge part of Spain’s appeal, with visitors drawn to works by Picasso, Velazquez, Dali and many others, but it was a coup to get Miró on board.
Sadly, Miró was too ill to create a brand new work, so he incorporated elements of other designs to get this result, known as The Sun of Miró, which was revealed to the public in 1984 and has been used ever since. The colourway harks back to the red and yellow of the Spanish flag, while the sun emblem certainly fits the Mediterranean climate. Both the sun and the star were taken from a much earlier poster which – whisper it – was for an art museum in France. If you're in need of an art fix, don't miss our round-up of the best art books .
04. Belize Tourist Board
How does a small central American country make its mark? With a rainbow of colour and nature-inspired details, thanks to Studio MPLS . Here, Belize uses some curved serifs at the top of its letterforms, mirrored by the diagonal first stroke of the 'e'. The overall rounded lettering mimics the number of circles the designers found in their research across the country’s wildlife, landscapes and culture. A toucan perches on the letter 'z', adding character without making the word illegible. As with Colombia, the icon is interchangeable for different regions, which have their own colour palettes; others include a lighthouse (for the Central Coast) and a tropical fish (for the reef).
The typeface has a slightly worn feel, thanks to little inner streaks letting the background show through. The logo can also be presented with the toucan seen separately, and its body and beak has some of those well-worn streaks. This rustic feel fits Belize’s nature-driven tourism, which often includes visits to the jungle and rainforests, and also the "hand-painted weathered signs" that Mike Fetrow, one of the designers, noted.
05. Tourism Fiji
The current version of Fiji’s logo is a vast improvement on its 2013 attempt (which was overly simplistic, forgettable, and burdened with the bland tagline ‘Where happiness finds you’). This much more inventive wordmark, from Australian agency Host/Havas , includes repeated traditional patterns seen on Masi fabric, a Fijian craft. Each motif symbolises a village, family or community.
The Prussian blue also makes this stand out from many other logos – though tourist boards love a bit of blue, this rich shade has real depth. The designs were created by Wati Maraiwai Talavutu, a Masi artist .
The national airline, Fiji Airways, worked with Masi artist Makereta Matmosi to revamp its logo in 2012 when it rebranded from Air Pacific. If this gives you the urge to fly, take a look at our round-up of airline logos .
06. New York Board of Tourism (USA)
It wouldn’t be fair to exclude the most iconic tourist board logo in the world. Milton Glaser’s design for New York has been replicated countless times, even though it says nothing about the city or its unique selling points – it’s simply about loving the place. There’s no trace of the skyline or attractions here; not even a nod to the city’s ‘Big Apple ’ nickname (unless the red heart reminds you of a red apple, in which case you’re probably just hungry). The lettering is set in American Typewriter, which has rounded slab serifs and feels suitably casual for the city that never sleeps. Glaser drew the sketch in red crayon back in 1976, and the original drawing can be found at New York’s Museum of Modern Art.
After 9/11, the logo was adjusted by Glaser to remind residents and tourists how strong New Yorkers can be; he changed the text to read ‘I [heart] NY more than ever’ , and gave one edge of the heart a small scorch mark; you can find this emotive design at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.
Glaser died in 2020, but this year we saw the logo morphed into ‘We [heart] NY’ thanks to Graham Clifford Design. We weren’t the only ones disturbed by the new look, with its cheap-looking 3D heart and thick sans-serif lettering – a misstep that Glaser thankfully never saw.
07. Experience Bengal (India)
Bengal’s wordmark has a similar feel to Belize – thankfully, there are thousands of miles between the two, as this one is in India. However, there are some precise details that mark this logo as a little bit different. The East Indian state has an incredibly colourful and modern logo that flows well and makes its mark against its competitors. It might remind you of a paint chart or a colour wheel, as each letter contains various fragmented shades. The sloping arcs of the 'n', 'a' and 'l' stems nicely elevate the logo by dropping below the baseline, moving it away from a boring straight line to something more inventive.
So, why should Bengal be seen as colourful? In parts of West Bengal, the soil is red; meanwhile, the tea plantations and the Himalayas create dramatic scenery. The state also has its own distinct style of weaving, which appears on saris, and its own art movement, known as the Bengal School, in the early 20th century, as well as a history of Patachitra painting. If you want to apply the chosen slogan, ‘the sweetest part of India’, to Bengali food, that’s pretty colourful too – speciality desserts include amriti, which are spirals of sweet dough fried in ghee.
08. City of Rotterdam (Holland)
Did you guess that Rotterdam is a riverside city and also a port? This logo, covering the wider Rotterdam area, depicts a flowing river bursting through the letter 'R'. What was almost a 2D logo has been enhanced with a drop shadow on the lettering, in the same dark blue as the water, making the green façade of the letter really stand out. It has been in place since 1999, but by 2017, politician Sven de Langen called for this logo to be replaced with the city’s coat of arms and its original motto, 'Strong through struggle'. Thankfully for design lovers and modernists, this has not come to pass.
So, why else is the water theme relevant here? Rotterdam has the largest port in Europe, so water is the key to trade. Plus, many cities in the Netherlands are passionate about sustainability, and Rotterdam is no exception. There’s even a self-sufficient floating farm on the water, home to a herd of dairy cows, which attracted press coverage worldwide; plus, this year, an exhibition called Water Cities Rotterdam , developed by the Niewe Instituut and the architecture firm NLÉ. Whilst the tourism logo lettering is placed in the river rather than floating on top, it definitely shows that water is a key part of life in the city, and this design wasn’t plucked out of thin air.

Things about Belize we’re thankful for as we head into 2022
With the holidays peaking around the corner, November is the time that we find ourselves reflecting about all that happened throughout the year while cringing at those unfulfilled New Year’s resolutions. Ending another year within the reality of a global pandemic has challenged us to reassess our daily routines and discover a meaningful way of living. For some, this was the spark needed to dust off the decade-old bucket list and finally take that once in a lifetime trip!
As 2021 ends, we are thankful for all the things that make this Belize a truly one-of-a-kind destination to live in and visit. Here are a few things:
- Our People : Belizean hospitality is as inviting as the climate. A part of the charm is the ability to find optimism and humor even in challenging times. There is also a genuine friendliness and pride that radiates at the chance to share local knowledge and help newcomers settle in. If you didn’t learn a few must-know Kriol words and slangs from locals did you really get the full Belize experience?
- Culture and Cuisine: With a population of roughly 400,000 persons, Belize actually has a wide mixture of people from various backgrounds and heritage. The result is a mosaic of traditions, customs, festivities and food that is the spice of living and adventuring in Belize. We’re thankful to able to enjoy rice and beans, hudut, cohune cabbage and fan favorite fry jacks (everybody loves fry jacks).
- Barrier Reef : You’ll never stop hearing us boast about the beloved Barrier Reef! It’s not all about its size though. The reef is a haven for all kinds of wildlife. The abundance of marine life and cayes equals unrivaled snorkeling adventures. Bucket-list favorites such as the Blue Hole also forms a part of this world heritage site, need we say more?
- Archaeological Sites : Ancient Maya cities such as Xunantunich have withstood centuries of global phenomena. They continue to reveal to us the complexities of the civilization and societies that existed before. We are fortunate to have these treasures in our backyards, easily accessible within a few minutes or hours.
- Conservation Efforts : This tiny country of only 8,867 sq. miles is leading in efforts to protect its forests and wildlife and its being recognized globally. Recently, National Geographic listed Belize as one of 25 Amazing Journeys for 2022 . The spotlight was on the newly created Maya Forest Reserve. As Belize evolves into a more environmentally conscious and sustainable tourism destination, there is a growing suite of eco-friendly accommodations and nature-based adventures that we can’t wait to share with you.
- Go Slow Vibe : The mantra of the island of Caye Caulker, the go-slow way of living actually extends to most of areas of the country.
