Disney Cruise Gym

Sharing is caring!

Just because you are on a Disney Cruise does not mean that you have to skip the gym. All of the Disney Cruise ships have a gym so that you can make sure that you get your daily work out even when you are sailing.

Let’s explore some of the ways that you can make sure that you keep to your fitness routine while you are sailing on a Disney Cruise.

There are plenty of opportunities to work off some of those calories you may have consumed at the buffet!

This includes not just the Disney cruise fitness centers, but all the other opportunities to keep fit on a Disney Cruise.

disneycruisegyms

All of the Disney Cruise ships have a fitness center. On the Disney Wonder and the Disney Magic, this is located on Deck 9 Forward. On the Disney Fantasy and Dream, the gym is on Deck 11 Forward.

On each of the Disney ships, the gym is part of the adult-only area of the ship and is right next to the spa.

The location of the gym on the Disney Wonder and Magic is a little better than the Dream and Fantasy. This is because on the Classic Ships the gym is right at the front, but on the Dream Class ships, it is to the side.

disneywondergym

For me, it is always better to have a view out directly over the front of the ship rather than to the side.

The gym on the newer ships also feels just about the same size as the ones on the Magic and Wonder. I am not sure if this is an illusion, but the Fantasy and the Disney Dream gym just seem more cramped than the ones on the Magic and Wonder.

Whichever Disney ship you sail on you will find plenty of fitness equipment in the gym. You will find Treadmills, Bikes and Elliptical Machines.

There are also a number of weights machines and a small selection of free weights.

Who Can Use the Disney Cruise Fitness Center?

disneyfitnesscenter

The Disney Cruise Gym is only available for use by those 18 years and older.

I do understand this rule, but it used to be rather annoying when my daughter who is a professional ballerina, was not allowed to work out in the gym. She is now an adult so this is no longer a problem, but there was no way an exception was going to be made, even for a professional athlete.

What Are the Disney Cruise Gym Opening Hours?

Always check your Disney Cruise Navigator to find out the exact opening hours of the fitness center. However, usually, the Disney Cruise Fitness Center is open from 6 am until 10 pm on all of the ships.

The Fitness Center will be closed on Disembarkation Day.

Disney Cruise Fitness Center Classes

disneycruisegym

If you want to take a fitness class on a Disney cruise there are plenty of options. Free classes include Pure Form Pilates, Pure Form Yoga, and Tour de Cycle Spin Classes.

These are all subject to change so go to the gym on your first day onboard to see what is available.

There will be a list of the scheduled times of these classes in the gym. There is limited space available so you do have to sign up in advance.

The sign-up sheet for fitness classes usually goes out the afternoon before the class.

Even if you don’t manage to get a place on the sign-up sheet it is often worth seeing if there is any space available, as sometimes there are no shows.

disneyfitnesscenter

If you are an early bird you should try the Wake Up Stretch class. This is free and is usually held on the sport’s deck unless the weather is not ideal, in which case it will be held in the Fitness Center.

This is a great way to start the day. I have also found it is a great way to meet your fellow cruisers.

There are also plenty of Fitness Seminars.

These usually include such things as advice about losing weight and acupuncture seminars. They can be interesting to listen to, but just be aware that all of these seminars, although they are offered free, are given with an aim to sell you a fitness or spa service.

 Locker Rooms

disneycruisegymlockers

The lockers in the changing room on the Disney Wonder

The Disney cruise locker rooms are conveniently located in the Senses Spa area close to the gym on all of the ships.

There are plenty of lockers to store all of your things. The lockers can easily be securely locked with your own 4 digit code.

Inside the locker, you will find a robe and slip flops. The robes are nice, but the flip flops are not the best, so I usually bring my own if I am going to the Rainforest (see below).

Even if you aren’t going to the gym it can be a great idea to use the showers in the locker rooms.

disney cruise magic gym

The Disney Wonder Sauna inside the Women’s Changing Room

There is also a Sauna in each changing room. This is a really nice free option if you don’t want to get a Rainforest Room Pass.

Disney Cruise Rainforest Room

disneyrainforestroom

The Rainforest Room is definitely not a place you are going to get any exercise, but it is one of the most relaxing places on the ship.

As a reward for your workout, why not get a Day Pass to the Disney Cruise Rainforest Room? Located in the Senses Spa on all of the Disney ships, the Rainforest Room is the place to go if you want the ultimate in relaxation.

Relax on one of the heated stone lounge chairs, recharge in the steam rooms or indulge in an aromatherapy shower.

You can get either a Day Pass or a length of cruise pass. All passes are limited in number so if you want to visit the Rainforest make sure you stop by the Senses Spa desk as early on in your cruise as possible as the passes do sell out.

disneycruiserainforestroom

You can get a length of cruise pass for the Rainforest for either a Single Person.

Couples passes are no longer available.

An 18% gratuity will automatically be added to the Rainforest Room Pass cost .

Disney Cruise Senses Juice Bar

The Disney Fantasy and Dream have Senses Juice Bar which is located between the gym and Senses Spa. This is one of the hidden gems of the Dream Class ships.

Senses Juice Bar is a great place to spend some time post-workout. Or just because you would like to enjoy some time with a healthy drink looking out through the large windows at the side of the ship.

The Juice Bar is one of the quieter places to relax on the Disney Fantasy and Dream. There are lots of options for a healthy juice or smoothie.

For example, Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice is available.

Or the X Press: Restore Harmony and Balance which is a blend of Strawberry, Avocado, Mint, Red Beets, Apple and Goji Berries.

If you want a Tropicale with Strawberry Mango and Orange this is a popular option.

Jogging Track

disneycruiserunningtrack

Each of the Disney ships has a jogging track on Deck 4 which is the promenade deck.

On the Disney Wonder and Magic, the distance one circuit around the deck is 0.3 miles and on the Fantasy and Dream it is 0.4 miles.

The track is rarely busy and it is great that you can run or walk all the way around the deck.

Most of it is pretty wide, but there are narrow sections where you do have to be careful to watch for others.

There is a specific direction which you are supposed to travel so make sure you follow the arrows which clearly show this.

disneycruisepromenadedeck

This area is very well lit at night so you can even use this after dark.

For me, this is a much better way to get in some exercise than going on the treadmill. It is so peaceful being out in the fresh air and this seems to make the distance go that much more quickly.

You will also find Shuffle Board courts out on Deck 4.

Basketball Courts on a Disney Cruise

All of the Disney ships have a basketball court. This is located in the area known as the Wide World of Sports Deck.

On the Classic Ships, this is on Deck 10 Forward and on the Fantasy and Disney Dream, the basketball court is on Deck 13 Aft.

You will also find table tennis tables and foosball tables.

On the Disney Dream and Fantasy, there is also a miniature golf course on Deck 13.

Disney Cruise Castaway Cay 5K

disneycastawaycay5K

If you want a challenge and you are sailing on a cruise which has a port stop at Disney’s Private Island, why not sign up for the Castaway Cay 5K?

The 5K has become one of the most popular Castaway Cay activities. It is open to anyone over the age of 10 who wants to either run or walk the 5K course which takes you on a 3.1-mile course around the island.

Guests younger than 10 can also participate but they will not be eligible to receive the medal for completing the course.

You no longer need to sign up – you just follow the course whenever you want. Ideally do this early as the heat soon makes it more challenging.

The Disney Cruise Castaway Cay 5K is a lot of fun and includes people with all levels of fitness. It gives you a great sense of achievement and you will also get a special medal if you cross the finish line.

The designs of the medals change a couple of times a year so you can keep collecting different ones.

Fitness on a Disney Cruise

There is no excuse not to keep up your fitness program on a Disney cruise, or even to start one. There are plenty of opportunities to burn off some of the extra calories that you will have consumed in the buffet!

Disney Magic Cruise Ship: Complete Guide

It might be the first Disney Cruise ship, but thanks to continued updates (plus a major refurbishment in 2013), the Disney Magic is still a great ship. Onboard you’ll find spacious guest rooms, ample dining, lots of lively activities and entertainment, and plenty of places to relax and enjoy the open ocean. Here’s our complete guide to the Disney Magic Cruise Ship.

Disney Magic Ship Overview

The Disney Magic is the cruise ship that started it all for Disney Cruise Line. With its maiden voyage in 1998, the world was introduced to an entirely different kind of cruising. In an industry that seems to be increasingly focused on mind-numbingly huge mega ships boasting roller coasters, bumper cars, and casinos , the Disney Magic holds its own and offers a unique experience that – while perhaps a bit more low-key – still has something to entertain the entire family.

After stepping onboard to the applause of the Crew and your fellow passengers, you’re immediately enveloped in the grand atrium of the ship, where a statue of Helmsman Mickey makes a popular photo spot. A glance around reveals art deco touches and hints of the sea itself, all invoking the early days of seafaring ocean liners.

How is Disney Magic Different From Other Disney Cruise Ships?

As the first-ever ship for Disney Cruise Line, the Disney Magic broke all kinds of long-standing norms for the cruise industry – introducing fireworks at sea, rotational dining, and many more innovations.

Now, with five ships in the fleet and more Disney Cruise ships under construction , you might think the Magic is a relic of the past. Not so.

The ship receives frequent updates, most recently in 2023 with the addition of a new lounge onboard. Its biggest upgrades came in 2013 when the ship underwent an overhaul so massive that they actually had to put in additional buoyancy capabilities to handle the added weight!

Thanks to this kind of attention, the Magic still has plenty of innovations and unique experiences that can only be found onboard this ship. For example, it’s the only Disney cruise ship on which you’ll find the AquaDunk drop-style water slide (added during the ship’s 2013 “re-imagination”).

The Disney Magic is a sister ship to the Disney Wonder , meaning the two are relatively equal in terms of construction (though similar areas on each ship are themed differently from one another). They’re the smallest ships in the fleet, easily outsized by other Disney ships.

Does the Smaller Size Make Disney Magic Better or Worse?

There are pros and cons to both types of ships, but it’s really going to come down to personal preference.

The smaller size of the Disney Magic means it’s much easier to navigate on foot – you’re just a short walk away from virtually any point on the ship. My wife and I prefer smaller ships such as the Magic for this very reason — it’s great to know that we can get pretty much anywhere onboard with a 5-10 minute walk and not be exhausted when we get there.

On the larger ships, I feel like I have to factor in “commute time” for dinner and shows. For the Disney Magic, it feels like I’m just walking around the corner. This makes the Disney Magic a great option for your first-ever Disney Cruise — it might not feel quite as overwhelming as a larger ship could.

This smaller ship is also able to visit ports that are inaccessible to larger ships, so you’re able to experience some fun itineraries and ports you might not be able to visit on a larger ship. In years past, the Disney Magic would actually sail straight right past the Doge’s Palace in Venice, Italy! (Cruise ships have since been prohibited from doing so, but it certainly was a sight back in the day.)

The Disney Magic has never really felt “small” to me — just “small in comparison.” If you’re more-accustomed to mega ships, you might prefer other Disney ships such as the Disney Dream , Disney Fantasy , or Disney Wish ; on the other hand, you might appreciate the easier access to everything that comes with a smaller ship. It’s worth noting that while the larger Disney ships tend to upsize everything — meaning that theatres, dining rooms, and pools might be bigger — most of the ships still have relatively equal offerings. As an example, the Magic (smaller) and Dream (larger) both have three major restaurants, a night club district, kids clubs, pools, waterslides, a water ride, a spa, and live shows — just with differences in size, layout, and theming.

Disney Magic Staterooms

A bed and couch in a Disney Cruise stateroom, leading to an outdoor balcony verandah

Let’s first focus on your own private room onboard the ship. Your stateroom (passenger cabin) is essentially your hotel room at sea, so it’s an important choice to make!

The Disney Magic has 875 staterooms, most of which offer an outside view via either a porthole window or a verandah balcony. Staterooms on the ship are divided into four primary types of rooms; each of those four types is further divided into multiple categories and subcategories. The type of room you choose is one of the biggest factors in the price of your cruise , because the per-person cost changes as the stateroom category changes.

Here is a consolidated list of the room types offered onboard. They’re listed here generally from least expensive to most expensive, though there may be some price overlap. For a more in-depth look at each of these room types, see the descriptions and photos posted in our Disney Cruise Staterooms article.

Inside Staterooms on Disney Magic

Inside Staterooms have no porthole window and no balcony. They do have a round mirror that sort of looks like a porthole, but all you’ll see through it is your reflection. The standard version of this stateroom is the smallest, while the deluxe version is slightly larger.

The standard version is also the only regular stateroom category on the ship which does not feature a split bathroom configuration; a split bathroom has a toilet/sink in a separate room from the shower/sink, allowing two people to get ready at the same time.

Disney Magic Dining and Lounges

The dining room of Animator's Palate, with oversized art brushes and colorful light fixtures resembling an artist's paint palate.

It’s a well-known fact that cruises feature virtually endless food options , and the Disney Magic is no exception. With three sensational main dining restaurants, an elegant adult-only dining option, and plenty of places to grab a quick meal or a snack on the go, you certainly won’t go hungry onboard this ship.

Rotational Dining Restaurants on Disney Magic

Like all Disney Cruise Ships, the Disney Magic offers rotational dining during the nightly dinner service. This Disney Cruise Line innovation pre-schedules you to visit a different restaurant on each night of the cruise. You’ll have the same waitstaff each night, so they’ll get to know you and your food preferences.

Dinner at these three restaurants is included in the cost of your Disney Cruise .

  • Animator’s Palate

A large video screen on the wall in Animator's Palate

The flagship dining experience on the first four Disney ships (including Disney Magic), Animator’s Palate offers a fan-favorite menu along with a taste of the magic of animation.

Menu-wise, you’ll find Asian, Pacific, and California influences: wild mushroom risotto, black truffle pasta purseittes (a DCL favorite!), butternut squash soup, polenta cake with tomato and mushroom, lemon-thyme marinated chicken, beef tenderloin, and more.

Your dinner also includes a tribute to animation – Drawn to Magic tells the story of how an animated feature comes to life. Much like a cartoon goes from a pencil sketch to ink-and-paint, the entire dining room goes from black-and-white to color during your meal, thanks to a bit of help from Sorcerer Mickey.

On longer cruises, you might also experience Animation Magic , allowing you to draw your own character and see it animated as part of the dinner show! This is one of those amazingly cool experiences that really sets Disney Cruise Line apart from any other offering at sea.

The dining room at Lumiere's, with a scene from Beauty & The Beast on the wall.

Lumiere’s offers French cuisine in an elegant setting. Menu options may include a bacon and mushroom tart, French onion soup, escargot, roast duck, avocado citrus salad, sea bass, and lobster mac-and-cheese. Round out your meal with creme brulee or a delightful Grand Marnier souffle.

Outside of dinner service, Lumiere’s is also an option for breakfast and lunch on most days; you’ll find a more-Americanized menu during those meal periods.

  • Rapunzel’s Royal Table

Disney character Rapunzel reaches for a floating lantern in the dining room of Rapunzel's Royal Table

You’re invited to a special celebration for Rapunzel in the kingdom of Corona! Thanks to a little Disney magic, your night at the restaurant just happens to fall during the celebration of Rapunzel’s birthday and the anniversary of her return to the kingdom. A true royal feast unfolds… stuffed ravioli, ahi tuna tartare, smoked salmon, lemon & thyme roast chicken, prime rib, and the pun-definitely-intended angel hair pasta with sea scallops.

Dinner here includes a show: singing, dancing, the brusque yet lovable crew from the Snuggly Duckling, and a visit from Flynn and Rapunzel! All together, it makes for a fantastic meal with a hint of character dining .

Adult-Exclusive Dining on the Disney Magic

A Disney Cruise is certainly a family affair, but it’s not by any means just for kids. There are plenty of ways for adults to have fun on a Disney Cruise . One of those is to enjoy an adult-exclusive dinner while the kids enjoy the youth clubs.

Reserve a table at Palo for a delightful meal featuring memorable Italian cuisine. The stunning venue includes giant windows overlooking the ocean, providing a perfect backdrop for your meal.

Dinner menu items include butternut agnolotti, seared sea scallops, dover sole expertly fileted at your tableside, tiramisù, and their signature chocolate soufflé. On sea days, a tremendously-popular brunch service is typically offered.

Dining here requires an upcharge and space is usually in high demand; book as early as your onboard booking window allows.

Casual Dining on the Disney Magic Cruise Ship

Breakfast and lunch are casual affairs onboard – and one of the best places to enjoy these meals is at Cabanas.

The buffet-style Cabanas restaurant offers a mix of American, European, and Asian favorites in an all-you-care-to-eat breakfast and lunch served from nearly a dozen food stations.

In the morning, enjoy all the expected items – made-to-order omelets, bacon, sausage, Mickey Waffles, and such – along with international offerings that might include Huevos Rancheros, rice, and miso soup. I myself don’t usually include gravlax on my breakfast menu at home, but enjoy it as a nice change on my cruise breakfast plate. And every cruise I look forward to enjoying a giant bowl of fresh muesli with dried fruits and nuts to start my day (alongside a Mickey Waffle or two).

Lunch at Cabanas is an ever-changing mix of freshly-grilled meats, jumbo iced shrimp and crab claws, burgers, sandwiches, pizza, and more.

Cabanas also offers a dinner service alternative. It’s not buffet style at night – you’ll have a server at your table – but it’s a nice alternative if you’ve had your fill of the main dining rooms on a longer cruise.

Lounges, Bars, and Snacks on the Disney Magic

Disney Cruise Dining - Daisy's De-Lites service window, with a case of sandwiches and fresh fruit | Image © Disney

There’s always a place to grab a quick bite or a refreshing drink onboard. Whether you’re looking for a nibble, just want a soda, or are seeking something with a bit of alcohol , you’ll easily find it onboard. Here are just a few highlights:

An adults-only retreat that focuses on specialty coffees and teas during the day, with cocktails in the evening.

This family-friendly venue hosts interactive events for all ages. Karaoke, trivia, game shows, and even dance parties can be found here on a daily basis.

Daisy’s De-Lites, Duck-In Diner, and Pinocchio’s Pizzeria

For a quick grab-and-go snack poolside, check out these quick service windows. You’ll find pizza, burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, chicken tenders, and even shawarma.

Eye Scream Treats and Frozone Treats

Cool down with all-you-can eat soft-serve ice cream cones (included in the cost of your cruise!), or spend a bit for a specialty smoothie.

An undersea-themed lounge that combines cocktails with live entertainment, such as comedy, music, karaoke, and interactive game shows.

An adults-only piano lounge featuring live music in a classy 1950s Hollywood atmosphere. Enjoy beer, wine, and of course martinis.

  • O’Gills Pub

The Disney Magic’s sports bar. Live matches (when available) are beamed in via satellite to this lively venue. Try the Blarney Stone Tasting Flight, with selections of whisky and Irish coffee.

Soda Station

One major difference between Disney Cruise dining and other cruise lines is that most non-alcoholic drinks are included at no additional cost — no need to purchase a separate drink package ! Located near the pool, this soda station offers unlimited refills all day long.

  • Soul Cat Lounge

Themed to the Disney•PIXAR film Soul . It’s located along the path leading to Rapunzel’s Royal Table, making it a great spot for a pre/post dinner drink and zeppole (fried dough pastry) — all accompanied by live music.

Room Service on Disney Magic

Room Service is included at no additional charge on the Disney Magic – all you’re expected to pay for is a tip for the crew member who delivers the food (and any specialty items you might opt for).

The standard menu typically includes salads, soups, chicken tenders, burgers and sandwiches, and even hot wings.  You’ll also typically find a couple of flatbread/pizza selections and perhaps a pasta dish. Cookies and cake/pie are the standard dessert.

A favorite among Disney Cruise Line’s repeat cruisers is the All Hands on Deck , a plate of assorted cheese, fruit, and crackers. And here’s a secret menu item that’s sure to delight kids of all ages: the famed Mickey’s Premium ice cream bar – yes, the same as those you find at Disney World and Disneyland!

If you don’t mind paying a bit extra, you can add on specialty items such as beer, wine, canned soft drinks, deluxe coffees, juices, and pre-packaged snacks such as candies.

Best Bets for Each Meal on Disney Magic

Below we list each of the main meal periods onboard the ship, and your best options for each.

  • Primary option: Cabanas is the prime breakfast spot onboard with long hours, a wide variety, and all you care to eat. The downside of this location is that its popularity can make it feel a bit hectic at times.
  • Secondary option: One of the three rotational restaurants (typically Lumiere’s) usually offers a table-service breakfast, complete with a server who will bring your food and keep your drinks refilled. The menu is a bit more limited than at Cabanas, but it’s usually a much more relaxed option to start your day.
  • Other options: You can order room service, but be forewarned that the breakfast menu is extremely limited. There’s no “hot breakfast” (eggs, bacon, sausage, oatmeal) on the menu, but you can get juices, coffees, pastries, and cold cereals. Elsewhere on the ship, you can likely find a light pastry at one of the cafes onboard, but don’t expect a filling meal.
  • Primary option: Like at breakfast, Cabanas is the best lunch option thanks to its tremendous selection. Iced jumbo shrimp and crab claws are a signature menu item most days; you’ll also find freshly grilled meats, a wide variety of side items, some interesting international selections, and lots of tempting desserts.
  • Secondary option: If you’re spending the afternoon lounging by the pool, there’s no need to dry off and head inside when a craving hits. Just drip your way on over to one of the many food service windows along the pool deck to enjoy a quick meal.  Options are more limited than Cabanas, but you’ll find enough to satisfy that rumbly in your tumbly with burgers, dogs, sandwiches, and unlimited ice cream cones. These windows often offer extended hours – a great option if you missed lunch hours at Cabanas or need a snack to hold you over until a later dinner service.
  • Other options : Lumiere’s typically serves a lunch option with open seating and waitstaff at your table. Room Service is another good option; your menu options won’t be terribly exciting, but you can still get a filling meal without leaving your couch (well, except to answer the door).
  • Primary option: Your assigned rotational dining restaurant is the heart of Disney Cruise dining. Your dedicated service team follows you all voyage long and will likely become your favorite Crew Members onboard the ship. Add in special themed menus and other thoughtful touches, and you’ll quickly see why this is a highlight of each day onboard.
  • Secondary option: As an alternative to your pre-scheduled rotational dining restaurant, you might opt to experience Cabanas in a totally new way. Dinner at Cabanas is an entirely different experience than the free-for-all buffet-style offerings that are the mainstay of breakfast and lunch. You’ll be seated at a table, and a server will present you a menu that features some of the most popular selections from other restaurants. It’s typically very laid back and it makes for a nice alternative, especially if a particular themed night at your assigned restaurant doesn’t sound like your speed..
  • Other options: Many cruisers enjoy dedicating at least one night of their cruise to an adult-exclusive meal at Palo. Otherwise, you can always grab something from the quick-service windows on the pool deck, or order room service.

Off-hours Eating and Snacking

  • Primary option: For cravings outside the main meal periods, your best bet is the quick-service options on the pool deck. Their generous hours and snacky offerings make them a great choice to tide you over between meals. Individual portions tend to be “snack sized” (such as 2 or 3 chicken tenders and a few fries), so you won’t spoil your dinner. But it’s still all-you-can-eat so you can certainly fill up if you desire.
  • Secondary option: Room Service is available 24/7 (up until about 1:30 AM on the last morning of your cruise), and is the only option for overnight snacking. Whether you’re craving buffalo wings at 4:00 AM (no judgment) or just want some warm cookies and milk at bedtime, room service won’t leave you hungry.

Disney Magic Pools and Water Slides

Image of the Aqua Dunk water slide, with a large clear tube coiled alongside the Disney Magic's distinctive red funnels (featuring a white Mickey Mouse silhouette and blue wave design)

The AquaDunk is a drop-style water slide that’s only found onboard the Disney Magic – not even its sister ship the Disney Wonder has one!

Your adventure begins when you climb the steps to the top of one of Disney Magic’s iconic red smokestack funnels; there, you’ll step into the launch chamber of a 215-foot-long water slide tube. Cross your arms and enjoy the exquisite suspense before the floor drops out from beneath you trapdoor-style, sending you plummeting about forty feet straight down and careening out over the edge of the ship (still safely encased in the clear tube). Seconds later, you’ll splash down in a shallow run-out area that makes it easy to stand up, perform the necessary wedgie extraction (since we’re being honest here), and head out for more fun.

The ride is almost comically short – less than 10 seconds from trapdoor to splashdown – but it’s quite exhilarating.

There’s no additional charge to ride the AquaDunk, but you will have to wait in line (sorry, no FastPass or Lightning Lane here). Lines tend to be longest on Sea Days and shorter when the ship is in port. Riding earlier or later can also help avoid crowds – just don’t forget to check the operating hours each day in the Navigator app.

Guests must be at least 48” tall to ride.

Twist ’n’ Spout

Part of the AquaLab (see below), Twist ‘n’ Spout is a bright yellow double-looping waterslide. You’ll twist and turn over almost 250 feet before a thrilling splashdown. Guests must be at least 38” tall to ride, and adult supervision is required for kids under age 16.

Pools and Splash Pads

The AquaLab on the Disney Magic, with the giant Twist 'n' Spout slide's yellow tubes behind a shallow pool and splash zone

This multi-level water playground is a great place for kids to cool off during their cruise. It includes a small pool, a “beach” with geysers and pop jets, pouring “paint” cans and showerheads, leaky pipes, and the amusing Donald’s Boiler – a familiar-shaped contraption that occasionally drenches everyone. Intended for ages 3+; adult supervision required for those under age 16.

Goofy’s Pool

The main pool onboard the ship, Goofy’s Pool on deck 9 serves as the family pool onboard. In addition to the large main pool, you’ll also find a couple of whirlpool tubs nearby. The giant FunnelVision video screen and a large stage are nearby, so there’s always something to keep you entertained while swimming. Intended for ages 3+ (must be toilet trained), with adult supervision required for those under age 16. This pool is occasionally closed so that it can be covered and used as additional deck space for major events, such as the sail-away party.

Nephews’ Splash Zone

Tiny travelers aged 3 years or younger can splash away the day among a veritable sea of spraying water and pop jets. Swim diapers are required, and children must be supervised by an adult.

Quiet Cove Pool

A serene oasis for the grown-ups. Those under the age of 18 are not permitted in this adults-only escape, not because anything elicit happens there but rather because every age group needs a bit of time to themselves. You’ll find a pool and whirlpool tubs here, along with plenty of lounge chairs and easy access to the adult beverage of your choice.

Disney Magic Kids Clubs and Teen Clubs

DCL Oceaneer Club

You might expect a Disney Cruise to be overrun with children. And while there are certainly plenty of kids onboard, they spend a lot of time in the fantastic kids clubs on the ship so you might be surprised at how few kids you see at times. A substantial portion of Deck 5 is dedicated to those under age 12.

  • Disney’s Oceaneer Club

The Oceaneer Club is the place where your kids will likely spend a large amount of their time onboard. It’s a secure facility accessible only to kids aged 3-10 and trained youth activities staff. Inside there are tons of kid-friendly spaces and activities, and it’s all included in the cost of your Disney cruise! This amazing kids club is one of the reasons we consider Disney to be the best cruise line for children .

Andy’s Room

Kids are immersed in the world of Disney·Pixar’s Toy Story movies in this unique multi-level play area.

Marvel Super Hero Academy

Themed as a top-secret S.H.I.E.L.D. facility, this area gives kids the chance to summon their inner Super Hero (and visit with a few real ones, too!). There’s plenty of time for freeform play, and occasional structured activities.

Disney Junior Area

A favorite of younger Oceaneers, the Disney Junior area features games, characters, and more.

Pixie Hollow

In this enchanted forest realm – home to Tinker Bell and her fairy friends – kids will find everything they need for a game of dress-up, a special craft project, or storytime.

  • Disney’s Oceaneer Lab

A partner facility to the Oceaneer Club, the Oceaneer Lab offers lots of hand-on activities and experiences for kids ages 3-10.

Cruise ship simulators with red stools, large ships wheels, and video screens with docking controls, in the Wheelhouse of the Oceaneer Lab on Disney Magic

Animator’s Studio

Learn how to draw your favorite Disney characters – or just entertain your own creative instincts.

Anyone Can Cook

Learn how to measure and mix ingredients and bake a batch of fresh chocolate-chip cookies.

Captain’s Workshop

Enjoy movies and video games in a spacious play area.

Super Sloppy Science

Meet a world-famous scientist with a penchant for unabashedly messy experiments.

The Wheelhouse

Take the wheel of a large video screen navigation simulator and see if you have what it takes to steer a Disney Cruise Ship.

Tweens and young teens – ages 11 to 14 – have a space all to themselves onboard the Disney Magic. Edge is the perfect place to relax thanks to its moody boiler room feel. There’s a huge video screen, a dance floor, plus plenty of video games and crafts. A mix of planned activities and unstructured free time keeps things interesting.

This teens-only retreat is in one of the coolest places on the ship – right inside one of the iconic red smokestack funnels! Those aged 14 to 17 can enjoy a specialty coffee or smoothie while relaxing with newfound friends. For techy types, there are plenty of TVs, video games, and tablets. Meanwhile, active teens will enjoy dance parties, karaoke sessions, and group activities.

it’s a small world nursery!

The tiniest cruisers are well taken care of in it’s a small world nursery! , an onboard babysitting service for infants and toddlers aged three and younger.

Disney youth counselors watch over the tykes and will also feed them and handle any necessary diaper changes.

This nursery service does require an additional (nominal) fee for each half-hour, with a one-hour minimum. Discounts are available for multiple children in the same family. Advanced reservations are strongly recommended. Note that there are no in-room babysitting services onboard.

Need Answers But Don’t Want To Wait On Hold?

Disney Magic Entertainment and Activities

Stage and seating of the Walt Disney Theatre

Disney is first and foremost an entertainment company – and that concept continues onboard its ships.

Broadway-Style Shows in the Walt Disney Theatre

Each night of your cruise, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a live show in the beautiful Walt Disney Theatre. This includes at least three Broadway-style shows during your cruise, along with other additions (such as family-friendly comedians, magicians, and hypnotists) on longer voyages.

Disney Dreams – An Enchanted Classic

A touching tale of a young girl at the age of not believing – follow along as she learns how to believe in herself thanks to the power of positive thinking along with some help from favorite Disney characters and memorable music.

Tangled: The Musical

A lively musical retelling of Rapunzel’s adventures. Sing along with film favorites and learn a few new songs, too! This live stage adaptation of the popular film is sure to wow you – especially when the mesmerizing puppet of Maximus takes the stage.

Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story

And they all lived happily ever after! But what happened after the end of the Disney classic Cinderella ? This comedy explores the idea of time-traveling (!) wicked stepmothers and stepdaughters (thanks to help from, who else, a wicked Fairy Godfather) trying to destroy the glass slipper and wreck Cinderella’s marriage.

Pirate Night / Pirates in the Caribbean Deck Party with Fireworks

Pirate night starts with the delivery of pirate bandanas to your stateroom – then the party moves to your scheduled dining location for the evening, where a special themed menu awaits. Then, head up to the pool deck for a raucous show with high-flying pirates including favorite Disney characters. Finally, the grand finale (and another Disney innovation) – fireworks at sea!

Note: not every itinerary offers a pirate night, and fireworks may be canceled due to weather.

Disney Movies in the Buena Vista Theatre

First-run and classic favorite Disney, PIXAR, and LucasFilm movies are shown all day long in the Buena Vista Theatre. Best of all? It’s completely free! You don’t even need a ticket – just drop in at showtime and grab a seat.

Sailing during the premiere of a highly-anticipated Disney film? It’ll be shown repeatedly in the Buena Vista Theatre, likely after a huge “PremEAR at Sea” showing in the Walt Disney Theatre.

Disney Magic Spas and Salons

Pedicure chairs face large oceanview windows at Senses Spa on Disney Magic. Senses is offered on all Disney cruises.

If you think a massage is relaxing, imagine a massage while looking out over the ocean! Disney Magic offers a full-service spa onboard the ship, plus many other health and wellness services.

Senses Spa and Salon

Pamper yourself with spa treatments, salon services, and rejuvenation procedures at this restful retreat. Experience Swedish massage, aroma stone therapy, deep tissue massage, facials, acupuncture, teeth whitening, shampoo/cut/style, manicures, pedicures, CoolSculpting, and more. Complimentary non-alcoholic beverages, showers, lockers, sandals, and robes round out the offerings.

Exclusively for guests aged 13-17, this special area of Senses offers treatments to teens. A parent or guardian must accompany the teen for the duration of the treatment ( solo and combined treatments are offered as an option).

Fitness Center

Keep up your workout routine (and burn off the four desserts you ordered at dinner last night) in the Fitness Center. Stay in shape with weight machines, cardio equipment, ellipticals, treadmills, and other equipment; participate in a yoga, Pilates, or aerobics class; or opt for personalized one-on-one training and analysis with a professional trainer.

  • Walking/Jogging Track

I don’t spend much time in the gym, but I do enjoy a nice walk for exercise. The Disney Magic offers a walking/jogging track on Deck 4 that offers close-up ocean views as well as a neat glimpse of some of the heavy machinery that keeps the ship going (should you be into that sort of thing like I am). It’s a great place to take a leisurely stroll after dinner, or take a jog if you’re so inclined. You might even recognize your stateroom host or dinner server – off-duty, of course – out for a run.

PHOTOS: The Fitness Center on the Disney Wish

All Disney Cruise Line ships have an onboard fitness center where guests can exercise during their sailing. The gym on the Disney Wish may be particularly important to some guests because a full outdoor walking track, which exists on the Dream, Fantasy, Magic, and Wonder, does not exist in the same form on the Wish.

The gym on the Wish, officially called the Senses Fitness Center, is located on Deck 5 Forward, just past the Triton Lounge. Hours may vary, but typical operating times are 6:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m., daily. For sailings originating in the United States (which is currently all Wish sailings), the fitness center is available to guests ages 14 and up. Guests ages 14 to 17 must be accompanied by an adult. “Proper fitness attire and athletic shoes” must be worn while you are in the gym. DCL does not codify what this means beyond that language.

Cardio and strength equipment is available. There is also a studio for yoga and fitness classes as well as a stationary bike studio. Check the onboard DCL Navigator app for the schedule during your trip. Some classes are complimentary and others are available for a fee. DCL also offers private fitness training sessions for a fee.

Towels (both cold and room temperature), water, and fruit are available whenever the gym is open.

There are locker and showers at the Senses Spa, which is next to the Fitness Center, but these facilities were not available during the time of our visit. Staff on hand was unsure whether this would be an ongoing policy or was limited to COVID restrictions. Please let us know if you use the gym and then have access to the showers and lockers.

About the Disney Magic

On July 30, 1998, the Disney Magic made her maiden voyage as the first Disney Cruise Line ship.

Since then the Magic has been extensively renovated - or reimagined - in October of 2013.

Even though this is the oldest ship in their fleet, you would never know. Disney is constantly cleaning, maintaining and repainting to keeps things looking brand new and in top condition.

Sailing the Disney Magic is truly Magic at Sea!

How Big is the Disney Magic?

Disney Magic weighs over 84,000 tons and it is 984 feet in length. The ship is the same size as the Disney Wonder , which was introduced to the Disney Cruise Line fleet at the same time as the Magic.

CAPACITY Passengers: 2,700 Staterooms: 877 Crew (aka "Cast Members"): 950

The Crew-to-Passenger ratio equals out to one Cast Member for every 2.8 guests!

  • The Disney Magic is 984 feet long - that is longer than Main Street U.S.A. at Magic Kingdom

Want the Disney Magic Map?

Is that included, disney magic dining, main dining, about disney magic restaurants.

Disney Magic features "Rotational Dining."

On Disney Cruise Line, you'll rotate between three main restaurants, offering you a  different dining experience every night for dinner. Your service crew will move with you.

Here are the three Disney Magic restaurants that are part of the rotational dining.

Lumiere's Restaurant on Disney Magic cruise ship

Image: Disney Cruise Line

Exclusive to the Disney Magic, Lumiere’s is a Beauty and the Beast themed dining room. Here you’ll enjoy American cuisine for breakfast and lunch and French fare for dinner. Come and, as they sing, "Be Our Guest"!

Rapunzel Royal Table Restaurant on Disney Magic Cruise Ship

Rapunzel's Royal Table

Another Disney Magic exclusive inspired by the Disney classic, Tangled . This dining experience is part of the rotational dining and features characters, live entertainment, singing and dancing. RRT is like no other! Also open during breakfast and lunch for non-rotational dining.

Disney Wonder Animator's Palate

Animator's Palate

There is a reason this is such a fan-favorite. Experience Disney animations in real life while you eat. We won't reveal too much here, but check out my Animator's Palate tips here - read tips #43-46.

Casual Dining

Disney Magic Cruise Ship Cabanas Buffet

You'll probably become very familiar with Cabanas on your cruise, because it is the main buffet restaurant. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner (for those who prefer to skip their rotational dining or are late to their Main Dining seating). So much variety here, they serve snacks, appetizers, desserts and entrees of every kind. Various selections will change from meal to meal, while others are constant fixtures on the menu. If you find a favorite dish, (Mickey Mouse pancakes anyone?) this can be comforting for finicky eaters, especially your little ones.

Disney Magic Preludes

EYE SCREAM TREATS

Every kid's dream come true: all the ice cream you can eat. And it's FREE! Hey, it's vacation, so I say go ahead and indulge your craving while on your Disney Cruise.

Along with soft-serve ice cream, you'll find plenty of toppings. My kids may have gone just  a little overboard with the all-you-can-eat (okay me too) but hey...it's vacation!

Disney Magic Frozone Smoothies

FROZONE TREATS

Disney Magic Pete's Boiler Bites

PETE'S BOILER BITES

Disney Wonder Pinocchio's Pizzeria

PINOCCHIO'S PIZZERIA

Disney Magic Beverage Station

BEVERAGE STATION

I tend to spend a lot of time visiting the Beverage Station on Deck 9.

Why? Because the drinks here are FREE. Drink options include water, soda, juices, coffee, tea, milk, fruit punch, lemonade, and hot cocoa.

The bars and lounges on board will charge you extra for sodas, but it is free here. Check out tip #48 on my Disney Cruise Tips to enjoy more free soda.

Disney Magic Room Service Menu

ROOM SERVICE

Brought to your stateroom

Disney Magic's room service menu is surprisingly large. The options are available at any time of the night or day.

To get more advice about Disney Magic room service, read tips 54-59 of my 101 Disney Cruise Tips .

Exclusive Dining

Looking for an adult only meal? Or something that will make your little one beam for days on end? The Disney Magic offers exclusive dining opportunities to fulfill those wishes.

Palo Restaurant on Disney Wonder Cruise Ship

Image: Brownie Bites

This is the Disney Magic's finest dining experience and it is available only for adults.

In our opinion, the Northern Italian menu is worth the premium fee you pay for it. When you top off the delicious kids-free meal with gorgeous seascapes, you have a brunch or dinner to remember.

Reservations are required and there's a dress code as well, please  refer to our Disney Cruise packing list for suggestions on what to wear.

Royal Court Royal Tea on Disney Wonder

Royal Court Royal Tea

Deck 3 at Lumiere's

Little princes or princesses (3 to 12) can join their favorite Disney characters for a tea party. While this tea party has an additional fee, it includes a chance to meet one-on-one with the princesses and take home a few royal gifts.

DISNEY MAGIC ENTERTAINMENT

Each night on the Disney Magic, a signature entertainment event will be hosted in the Walt Disney Theatre.

You'll be treated to performances that are legitimately Broadway-caliber. Other acts that are sometimes shown on stage include musicians, jugglers, ventriloquists, hypnotists, or comedians. Sometimes they show a feature movie – typically something Disney-owned that is new to theaters or is coming soon.

The Walt Disney Theatre is located on Deck 4 Forward.

Tangled the Musical on Disney Magic Cruise Ship

Tangled: The Musical

Tangled  is the story of  Rapunzel's fairytale. The characters from the beloved animated film are portrayed by real-life actors on stage. If you know the movie, you'll get to sing along with the familiar songs.  This show is only shown on Disney Magic.

Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story on Disney Magic Cruise Ship

Twice Charmed: an Original Twist on the Cinderella Story

This musical serves as a sequel of sorts to the classic film Cinderella .  The premise is simple: what would have happened if Cinderella had never put on that glass slipper?

The stepsisters are back with the wicked stepmother, but there's a new bad guy in the mix: an evil Fairy Godfather.

Disney Wonder: The Disney Dreams musical

Disney Dreams

Deck parties.

Sail Away Deck Party on Disney Magic Cruise Ship

Sail-Away Celebration

Frozen Deck Party on Disney Magic Cruise Ship

Frozen Deck Party

On select 7-day cruises, you'll step into the atrium and find it has been converted into a winter wonderland, where you will meet all sorts of characters from Arendelle. This is the start of a day of Frozen-themed activities (scavenger hunt, dinner, evening show, etc).

Disney Magic: Pirate Night! See the shows and fireworks!

Pirate Night

Wear your best pirate outfit to celebrate a full day of activities , character meet and greets, and an impressive deck party. Of course, it culiminates with a bang, as Disney Magic sets off fireworks into the night sky.

Note: some sailings (like some Alaska) don't feature fireworks.

Disney Magic: Marvel Day at Sea

Marvel Day at Sea

On select 5-night cruises, Disney Magic hosts Marvel's heroes, like the Avengers and Spiderman. If your child loves Iron Man or Captain America, he or she will love meeting them in person.

Other events include a movie marathon, a costume night, and special stunt show that features fireworks and incredible stunts on the ship deck.

Christmas & Halloween Parties on Disney Magic cruise ship

Seasonal Celebrations

Character greetings.

Meet and Greet Characters on Disney Magic

Meet and Greets

One of our favorite parts of any Disney Cruise is getting to meet some of our favorite characters.

We take an autograph book ( see our packing list ) and collect as many signatures as we can.

The times and characters available to meet vary, so check the DCL app each day.

Frozen Meet and Greet on Disney Magic Cruise Ship

Free Ticketed Events

These events require tickets (they're free at online checkin):

  • Frozen Meet and Greet
  • Princess Gathering
  • Heroic Encounters
  • Star Wars Character Experience

Tickets are limited so reserve them during online checkin . If they are sold out, visit Guest Services as soon as you get on the ship; there are often tickets available there.

Disney Magic: Disney Character Breakfast

Character Breakfast

On select 7+ night cruises, you can eat breakfast with Disney and Disney Junior Characters. They go from table to table, posing for photos, giving high fives, and saying hi.

DISNEY MAGIC CONCIERGE

Concierge lounge.

Concierge guests will enjoy this luxurious, chic escape from the rest of the ship.

The Concierge Level Lounge allows guests to access the internet, drink a cocktail, watch news or sports on a huge TV, and partake of complimentary beverages and food served throughout the day.

Concierge Sundeck

Connected to the Concierge Lounge, you'll find a sundeck available only to Concierge level guests.

Perched above the Quiet Cove Pool, it's a quiet area for sunning and relaxing.

It offers expansive views of the ocean in virtually all directions, and if you want a soda or snack, just pop back into the Concierge Lounge.

Towels and sunscreen are provided.

OTHER ONBOARD SERVICES

Health center.

The Health Center is available when you're feeling sick, need first aid or have a medical emergency.

The clinic keeps regular daily hours to offer care for non-emergencies. If you have an emergency, the ship has a doctor and nurse on call 24/7.

Tender Lobbies

Guest services.

Got a question or request? This is your place. I have found the crew that manages Guest Services to be very responsive and caring.

They can help you make spa appointments or dining reservations, plan your vacation by explaining activities, ship amenities, and the ship schedule.

Questions with your bill are handled here. You may also request a free crib or diaper genie here. Book these when you first arrive to make sure you get one.

Port Adventures Desk

Onboard sales desk.

Plan and book future Disney Cruises. Why would you book a Disney cruise while on a Disney cruise, you ask? You’d be surprised by how many people do!

It’s all about the perks. It’s pretty much the only way to get a Disney cruise for a discounted price.

Here’s the low down:

  • 10% discount on prevailing rates on your next cruise (concierge-level excluded)
  • Stateroom credit of $100 (3-6 nights) or $200 (7-night cruises or longer)
  • Reduced Deposit on 7-night sailings or longer

You don’t have to decide on a date while on the ship. Just put a $250 deposit down as a placeholder for a future cruise and sail within the next 24 months.

Disney fantasy fitness center.

During a recent summer cruise on the Disney Fantasy, we went to check out the fitness center.  The fitness center is located on Deck 11 all the way forward.  You have to go through the Senses Spa to get to it.  Use of the fitness center is included in the cost of your cruise.  You can also use the showers and locker room as well if you need more space to get ready than is available in your stateroom.  Note that you must be 18 years or older to use the fitness center.

There are several weight machines in the back of the room.

Cardio Machines in the First Two Rows and Weight Machines in the Back

The second and first rows are filled elliptical and treadmill machines that face out towards the ocean.  I found myself getting disoriented a few times while walking on the treadmill if I stared at a point on the water and the ship was moving sideways while I was walking forward.  I just had to avoid fixating on a point on the water and I was fine.

View from the Treadmill

There are also a large amount of free weights and other equipment that can be used for your workouts as well.

Gym equipment on Disney Magic?

I am a personal trainer and I am working with someone who is taking a 10 (12?) day cruise on the Magic in a couple of weeks. I am trying to plan some workouts for her and cannot ascertain from Disney's website whether the fitness center has free weights, bosu balls, resistance bands, kettle balls, and/or weighted balls. If anyone knows, please let me know---it would really help me design some good workouts so she doesn't get killed her first week back (lol!).

Thanks ahead of time,

Kim in Houston

I honetly dont know off hand. I would think, that due to the ship moving and potentally moving in a possibly unpredictable manner, that there would be no free weights onboard. At least not heavy ones.Though I could be wrong.

You could call 1800 9513532 which is the reservations number, and ask. They can find out for you.

YOWmom

Not sure about Disney but both RCCL and Carnival have very well-stocked gyms (including free weights and bosu/stability balls), so would expect Disney to be comparable... In fact, I've found them to be far superior to even the nicest hotel gyms I've been to, so you shouldn't have trouble designing a "challenging" program :)

Thanks! I think I will give Disney a call and if they can't be specific, I'll just plan a workout that uses basic equipment and personal bodyweight.

Yes they had free weights. They also have a variety of weight machines and aerobic machines. Quite a large number and I have never seen the room very busy.

I didn't notice if they had bosu balls, bands, etc. I mainly wanted to get some time in on the recumbent bike :)

Does anyone know if the fitness room is open when the ship is in port?

Does anyone know if the fitness room is open when the ship is in port?   Thanks!

It is open. There's no relation between port days and the spa/fitness center like there is with the merchandise/shutters.

Culinary choices aboard the Disney Magic are sure to please everyone in the family, with diverse menus at themed restaurants. Dis veteran.

The gym has no cost. Occasionally there are free classes like spinning and floor work. We use it almost every day. Lots of treads and a few bikes and other things. Several sets of weights, balls, mats, etc water and fruit set out for you. The treads have TVs. You can bring own headphones or use theirs.

Gym is free. Some classes cost more (not many and will be indicated as such in the navs) but many are free

Disney World Confirms Revival Date for ‘Foundationally Racist’ Attraction

in Walt Disney World

A bustling crowd walks down Main Street USA at a theme park, with festive decorations and shops on either side. In the background, a grand castle with blue and gold spires stands under a partly cloudy sky. People of all ages are enjoying their day at the park.

Walt Disney World Resort is bringing back a recently shuttered attraction after an extended overhaul. This is set to cause a stir amongst the fanbase, as many have called it a “historically racist” attraction. Let’s see what your thoughts are on this.

A ‘Foundationally Racist” Disney Attraction To Make Its Return After Extended Overhaul

The Walt Disney Company recently introduced a new attraction at Magic Kingdom Park, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which officially opened on June 28, 2024. This launch followed previews for cast members and Annual Passholders. The addition replaces Splash Mountain, a change that has sparked criticism from some fans who claim it reflects Disney’s focus on diversity and inclusion at the expense of traditional storytelling.

This sentiment has extended beyond the theme parks, affecting the company’s studio output. Although Disney has not confirmed these allegations, CEO Bob Iger has emphasized the importance of prioritizing storytelling while acknowledging the value of messaging. Disney World and other Central Florida theme parks have undergone numerous updates to address historical issues and promote inclusivity.

Among these attractions is the Jungle Cruise , a historic ride that has been part of Walt Disney World since its opening day 52 years ago. Situated in Adventureland alongside notable attractions such as Pirates of the Caribbean and The Magic Carpets of Aladdin, the Jungle Cruise offers guests a humorous and engaging journey through a jungle guided by a skipper who shares entertaining stories about the landscape and its inhabitants.

According to the latest refurbishment schedule, the Jungle Cruise at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom will reopen on October 18, 2024, following an extended closure . The popular attraction will be out of service from August 26, 2024, through October 17, 2024. During this period, no significant changes to the show are anticipated, although recent permits have been filed with contractor Underwater Engineering Services, Inc. for various updates.

Despite recent enhancements to the Jungle Cruise’s scenes, the ride has not been refurbished significantly since 2017. In addition to the Jungle Cruise closure, Big Thunder Mountain is expected to soon close for refurbishment, potentially leaving the Magic Kingdom without two of its major high-capacity attractions in September. The dates for Big Thunder Mountain’s closure have not yet been announced.

In 2021, The Walt Disney Company announced plans to revamp Jungle Cruise to address its culturally insensitive elements. Since its debut on Disneyland Resort’s opening day in Anaheim, California, the attraction’s problematic aspects have also been present on the East Coast. Originally, Jungle Cruise featured Trader Sam, a shrunken head kiosk, and depictions of African “headhunters,” which drew significant criticism over time, especially following the overhaul of Splash Mountain, which was inspired by the controversial “Song of the South.”

A split image with close-up of a building permit and blueprints on the left, and the Disney Cinderella Castle at Disney World on the right under a cloudy sky.

Disney’s decision to update Jungle Cruise aimed to eliminate “tribal caricatures and negative depictions of native people,” as reported by Variety . According to Smithsonian Magazine , Carmen Smith of Walt Disney Imagineering explained the motivation behind the changes in 2021, stating that Imagineers are responsible for ensuring that the experiences and stories they create reflect diverse voices and perspectives from around the world.

Disney is undertaking significant updates to its attractions to address and minimize negative portrayals of various groups and individuals. While some traditionalists argue that removing these depictions, whether offensive or not, erases history, Disney’s goal is to ensure that its resorts remain welcoming to all guests. The company aims to create an environment where everyone can enjoy their experience without encountering harmful stereotypes or offensive content.

To remain relevant and sensitive to contemporary standards , Disney must continue to update the Jungle Cruise to address historical and cultural insensitivities. The attraction, a long-standing fixture at Disney parks, has faced criticism for its outdated and problematic depictions of Indigenous peoples and other cultures. To align with modern values of inclusivity and respect, Disney will need to revise the ride’s content and imagery further, ensuring that it reflects current social awareness and promotes a positive, accurate representation of diverse cultures.

History of Tomsk Oblast

The development of this region began in the late 16th - early 17th centuries. The oldest settlement in the Tomsk region is the village of Narym, founded in 1596.

The town of Tomsk was founded as a military fortress by the decree of Tsar Boris Godunov in 1604. It was one of the outposts of the development of Siberia.

From 1708 to 1782, Tomsk was part of the Siberian province. In 1804, the town became the center of a separate Tomsk province, which included the current territories of the Altai krai, Novosibirsk, Kemerovo, East Kazakhstan, Tomsk regions and part of Krasnoyarsk krai.

In the 19th century, the growth of gold mining, smelting of metals, fur trade concentrated large capital in Tomsk, triggering a revival of trade. Important transport routes - the Moscow and Irkutsk tracts - passed through Tomsk.

In 1888, the first university beyond the Urals was opened in Tomsk, in 1900 - the Technological Institute, in 1901 - the first commercial school in Siberia, in 1902 - the Teachers’ Institute. By 1914, Tomsk was one of the 20 largest cities in the Russian Empire.

In 1925, the Tomsk Governorate was abolished and became part of the Siberian region. In the 1930s, Tomsk lost its administrative significance. In August 1944, the city became again a regional center.

During the Second World War, dozens of factories, educational, scientific, and cultural institutions were evacuated to Tomsk oblast and became the basis for the further development of the region in the postwar years.

In the 1950s, the first in the USSR nuclear center of the world level was created in Tomsk Oblast - the Siberian Chemical Combine. In the 1960s-1970s, oil production began on the territory of the region, a giant petrochemical plant was built - the Tomsk Petrochemical Combine.

Tomsk Oblast - Features

The length of the Tomsk region from north to south is about 600 km, from west to east - 780 km. Most of the territory is difficult to access because of taiga forests occupying about 60% of the region and marshes (28.9%). The Vasyugan swamp is one of the largest marshes in the world.

The climatic conditions of the southern and northern districts of the Tomsk region are markedly different. Almost the entire territory of the region is located within the taiga zone. The climate is temperate continental. The average temperature in July is plus 24 degrees Celsius, in January - minus 16 degrees Celsius. The climate in the northern part of the region is more severe, winters are longer.

The largest cities and towns of Tomsk Oblast are Tomsk (570,800), Seversk (105,200), Strezhevoy (38,900), Asino (24,400), Kolpashevo (22,200). Lake Mirnoye located in Parabelsky district is the largest lake. The main river, the Ob, crosses the region diagonally from the southeast to the northwest, dividing it into two almost equal parts.

The main industries are oil and gas, chemical and petrochemical, engineering, nuclear, electric power, timber industry, and food industry. All the machine-building and metal-working plants are located mainly in Tomsk and partly in Kolpashevo and Seversk. Oil is extracted mainly in the north-west and west of the region.

The main branches of agriculture are meat and dairy cattle breeding. Agricultural fields occupy about 5% of the territory. Wheat, flax and vegetables are grown in small amounts. Cattle-, pig-, sheep-, and goat-breeding are presented as well as poultry farming. Fur trade (squirrels, sables, musk-rats) and fur farming (silver-black fox) are also developed.

Tomsk Oblast - Natural Resources

Tomsk Oblast is rich in such natural resources as oil, natural gas, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, brown coal (the first place in Russia), peat (the second place in Russia), and groundwater. In the region there is the Bakcharskoe iron ore deposit, which is one of the largest in the world (about 57% of all iron ore in Russia).

Forests are one of the most significant assets of the region: about 20% (more than 26.7 million hectares) of forest resources in Western Siberia are located in Tomsk oblast. The timber reserves amount to 2.8 billion cubic meters.

In the Tomsk region there are 18.1 thousand rivers, streams and other watercourses with a total length of about 95 thousand km, including 1,620 rivers with a length of more than 10 km.

The main waterway is the Ob River. The Ob length in the region is 1,065 km. The main tributaries of the Ob flowing into it on the territory of the Tomsk region are the Tom, Chulym, Chaya, Ket, Parabel, Vasyugan, Tym.

Attractions of Tomsk Oblast

The sights of Tomsk Oblast include the harsh beauty of Siberian nature, the variety of winding rivers and canals, as well as monuments of wooden architecture, and other places that keep ancient legends about this land.

Undoubtedly, it is worth to visit Lake Kirek, one of the most beautiful reservoirs of the Tomsk region. It is located only 50 km from Tomsk. According to legend, a local millionaire drowned his diamonds here during the revolution in 1917.

About 40 km from Tomsk, there is a lake complex of the village of Samus consisting of seven lakes. These lakes are known for their very dark water, which is explained by the streams flowing into them from peat bogs.

Near the village of Kolarovo, located 33 km south of Tomsk, there is Siniy (Blue) cliff. It is a three-kilometer precipice descending to the Tom River. The cliff got its name due to the gray-blue shale that covers it. Several centuries ago, after the founding of Tomsk, a watchtower was installed on the cliff, from which signals were sent to the fortress.

At the source of the Berezovaya River, 40 km southeast of Tomsk, there is such an attraction as the Talovsky bowls, a natural monument of national importance. These are huge natural figures in the form of vessels of oval form, covered from the inside by birnessite - a rare mineral.

There is a tourist attraction of a global scale in the Tomsk region - the Vasyugan marshes, the largest marsh complex in the world. It is also called the “Russian Amazon”, because the Vasyugan marshes are not inferior to the famous South American river by their scale.

To the collection of sights of Alexandrovsky district of the Tomsk region, the most distant from the regional center, we can add Lake Baikal, the namesake of the famous lake, Goluboye (Blue) Lake, Malyye mountains (highlands) in the valley of the Vakh River and the Paninsky reserve, where the ancient burials of the Khanty and Ostyaks are preserved.

On the right bank of the Ob River, more than 200 km from Tomsk, the village of Mogochino is located. St. Nicholas Convent can be found here.

In Tomsk itself, plenty of monuments of wooden architecture deserve attention. In total, there are more than 700 objects, including 109 monuments of federal and regional significance.

Also in the Tomsk region you can visit more than 100 museums (most of them are located in Tomsk). The most popular museums are the Museum of History of Tomsk, the Memorial Museum “The NKVD Investigative Prison”, the Museum of Wooden Architecture, the Tomsk Regional Art Museum.
