A guide to help you find the best places to see dolphins in cornwall, what species you can expect to see, dolphin fun facts and more, about dolphins, nothing makes you feel quite as immersed in nature in this small county as being in the open sea with cornwall’s dolphins riding the waves with you, cruising at the bow of your boat. the excitement on our coast boat trips when we see a gleaming pod leaping through the water is unparalleled..

These majestic mammals have a special place in our hearts, their intelligence, curiosity, playfulness, and preference for moving in groups, have cemented their status as one of our favourite sea creatures.

If you’re wondering what kind of dolphins you can see in the UK, look no further – in Cornwall we’re lucky enough to be home to the Common, Bottlenose, Risso, Striped, and Atlantic white-sided dolphins. A pod of dolphins can often be found just off the coastline of St Ives , Penzance , Lands End and Hayle .

Are There Dolphins In Cornwall?

We will never tire of supporting Cornwall’s wildlife, and educating locals and visitors alike on the magic of nature on our shores. Over the years we’ve learnt where the best places to see dolphins in Cornwall are. Every year on Coast Boat Trips we see dolphins, and each time makes us just as happy as the first sighting did. We are home to dolphins and porpoises, and their curious natures mean they often come to say hello.

Cornwall is undoubtedly one of the best places to see dolphins in the UK. From the north coast to the south coast, from estuaries to harbours, on calm days you’re likely to see them, but especially with us.

Common dolphins can be seen all year round, and even the bottlenose on the off chance. However, April – September can be the best time of year to see them. Dolphin watching in Penzance is beautifully picturesque, and playful dolphins in Hayle harbour are often spotted.

What Types Of Dolphins Can You Find in Cornwall?

Our main resident dolphins are the Common dolphin and Bottlenose dolphins, of which we have one inshore group and multiple offshore groups. After many years of experience, we’re now a dab hand at recognizing species and often see Risso, Striped and Atlantic White-Sided dolphins too.

Common dolphins are also known as short-beaked dolphins, and remain offshore but come close to shore for feeding purposes. We often spot them in groups, travelling at speed – it’s an unforgettable experience.

A claim to fame this small island (UK) can be proud of is that Bottlenose dolphins in our waters are the biggest of their kind. This is so they can thrive in our chilly waters. They love to swim alongside boats, riding the waves with them.

If you’re keen to see dolphins in UK waters, the South West is your best bet. We’re home to England’s only pod, a resident pod of 29 Bottlenose dolphins. This pod is under threat due to human disturbance, something we ensure would never negatively impact the dolphins or any of the marine wildlife we pass by on our boats .

What Is a Group of Dolphins Called?

A group of dolphins is called a ‘Pod’. Pods can be made up of 2 – 30 dolphins, and much like families in human society, these pods are incredibly multi-faceted, with hierarchies, hunting strategies and communication skills.

Members of the pod can leave and reappear, with exact numbers fluctuating, much like communities of chimpanzees. This is called a ‘fission-fusion’ society. Within the pods themselves, alliances are formed and broken, with males often pairing up with herd females and protecting themselves against other dolphins.

Pods can group together, forming ‘Super Pods’, this can be as many as a hundred or even several thousand dolphins. Safety in numbers! You might think this is rare, but it’s surprisingly common and absolutely spectacular. It can happen anywhere in the world and occurs during times of courtship or when there is plentiful prey, and unlucky anchovies.

Are Dolphins Mammals?

Is a dolphin a fish or a mammal? This might sound like a trick question… Although dolphins live in the ocean all the time, they are mammals for several reasons. Unlike fish, who have gills to filter oxygen into their bodies and breathe underwater, dolphins are warm-blooded and breathe in air through their lungs. This is why they make frequent trips to the surface and grace us with their presence.

Additionally, dolphins give birth to live young and then feed them milk, rather than laying eggs as fish do. Surrounding the dolphin’s blowhole, which acts as a nose, is a small amount of hair, so there you have it – warm-blooded, milk and hair equals a mammal.

Different species of pregnant dolphins carry their offspring from 10-18 months, and research shows that mothers sing their own names to their unborn calves. This signature whistle is taught before birth, and in the following two weeks after birth, and will help the animals to identify each other.

How Long Can Dolphins Hold Their Breath?

The blowhole at the top of a dolphin’s head is the equivalent of our nostrils, it allows the dolphin to breathe oxygen into the lungs. Its handy location, thanks to evolution, allows the dolphins to rest or swim just underneath the surface, exposing the blowhole when breaking the surface. The strong muscles then tightly seal the blowhole, to stop any water from entering the lungs.

On average dolphins are able to hold their breath for several minutes but tend to breathe up to 4 or 5 times a minute. This varies with each species, the Bottlenose dolphin for example can hold their breath for up to 20 minutes! This allows them to dive for food, but otherwise, they’ll come up for air 2-3 times per minute.

coast boat trips dolphins in cornwall 1

How Do Dolphins Sleep?

You might be wondering how dolphins sleep, it’s a question that pops up regularly on our Coast Boat Tours. They will rest in the water, vertically or horizontally, or sleep while slowly swimming in the pod. Dolphins can also enter a deep sleep, where they’ll float at the water’s surface. This is called ‘logging’, simply because they resemble a floating log.

Fascinatingly, Bottlenose dolphins sleep with one eye open. Only half of their brain shuts down, with the opposite eye, with the other half staying awake to watch for predators, and signal when air is needed. Two hours later, they’ll switch over to the other side of their brain – incredible!

Fun Facts about Dolphins

There are freshwater dolphins.

River dolphins are an important indicator of a flourishing river ecosystem. A healthy river population of dolphins suggests a good overall river status, but a declining population is a cause for alarm.

Underwater noise pollution is a real threat to dolphins

They can reach speeds of over 30 mph for brief periods.

Bottlenose dolphins are content cruising along at a slow 2 mph, but occasionally a burst of energy will see them gliding through the water at speeds of 30 mph.

They like to blow bubbles

Dolphins blow bubbles from their blowhole whenever they exhale, expelling the water before breathing air back in. Scientists have also noted that they like to blow bubbles too when they are excited, surprised or curious.

Fishing nets and equipment are a major threat to dolphins

Commercial fishing nets are vast, up to 100km long and baited with thousands of hooks, ropes and traps. Dolphins and whales are all too often casualties of the fishing industry, and the more they struggle against the net the more their dorsal fins and bodies become entangled.

They are very intelligent

You’ll find a worthy competitor in a dolphin, they are quick-thinking problem solvers, great mimics and fast learners. They’ve been shown to be capable of empathy, innovation, grief and joy.

How Long Do Dolphins Live?

There are currently 42 species of dolphins, and their lifespan varies from around 20 years with smaller species, to 80 years for larger dolphins. The largest member of the dolphin family is the Orca (killer whale), and the UK has a resident Orca that on very rare occasions can be seen. The oldest Orca known in the world was appropriately nicknamed ‘Granny’ and was widely photographed over the years. It is thought she was 105 years old when she was last seen in 2016.

Female dolphins tend to live longer than male dolphins, with female Bottlenose living for more than 60 years, compared to the males who can reach their 40s. You might wonder how on earth they begin to correctly age a dolphin. Some have been photographed and monitored since birth, and with others, a cross-section of their teeth, much like trees, gives a good indication.

Not so surprisingly, the Bottlenose dolphin’s lifespan in captivity averages 12 years, with 52.26% of Bottlenose dolphins born in captivity not surviving past the first year. This is a higher mortality rate than in the wild. Whilst it’s hard to be sure why this is, it’s suggested that those first few years in natural social groups and environments in a wild pod are key.

Captivity has a huge impact on the well-being and ultimately the lifespan of these amazingly intelligent, inquisitive animals, and it’s why we’re so proud to champion nurturing the habitats of wild dolphins.

You might have thought the only way to see dolphins was in captivity, but dolphin watching in the UK is a possibility and on our boat trips we give you the best chance to do so. Wild dolphin watching in Cornwall via our unobtrusive boat tours is the best way to experience these incredible animals in their natural habitats, on their own terms.

coast boat trips dolphins in cornwall 4

Where Do Dolphins Live?

Dolphins are water mammals, but with so many species they aren’t limited to any one specific area. They live in the world’s seas and oceans, but some are also native to rivers. Orcas’ size protects them against the harsh temperatures in the Arctic and Antarctic, but other dolphin species also found in cold waters are the white-beaked and hourglass dolphins. Most species prefer warmer waters, don’t we all.

The food dolphins eat depends on their habitat, but they are active predators and eat a variety of fishes, squids and crustaceans, jellyfishes and even octopuses.

Love Dolphins?

Faqs about dolphins, your questions answered about dolphins, what time of year can you see dolphins in cornwall.

We see dolphins all year round in Cornwall, but we do tend to see more from April to September when the waters are warmer. Their distributions are often based upon their food sources, as they follow their food. This means any time of year can be a peak time to see them, but by monitoring the waters at Coast Boat Tours we know where the best opportunities lie.

What Is the Best Time of Day to See Dolphins in Cornwall?

At daybreak, dolphins tend to be more active, especially if the water is calmer than it is at night. Dolphins’ behaviours are influenced by so many factors, from the tide, wind speed, prey and moon cycles.

Can you swim with dolphins in Cornwall?

We’re firm believers at Coast Boat Trips in not disturbing the natural environment and its animals in any way, we are here to be a passive observers. The dolphins in our waters are wild animals and should be treated with respect and caution. Whilst there are still a few places in the world you can swim with captive dolphins, extensive research shows this negatively impacts the health and wellbeing of these mammals. But the experience of seeing wild dolphins from our boats is just as exhilarating and guilt-free.

Pendennis Point, Falmouth guide to watching dolphins, seals, Basking Sharks and seabirds

It may lack the high cliffs and abundant nesting sea birds of other more exposed Cornish sea watching places but it offers almost 360 views of the Fal Estuary and Falmouth Bay.

The site’s ease of access enables the less mobile to have the opportunity to enjoy spectacular sea views and a chance of seeing a variety of marine life.

LR grid reference is SW826316.

Parking is free at the headland although in season or during special events it may become full.

There are seats overlooking the water and place to picnic.

Visitors are requested not to leave litter.

Best places to seawatch at Pendennis Point

A few yards from the car park a path leads around the headland offering sweeping views taking in The Roseland Peninsular, the Fal Estuary mouth and Falmouth Bay across to the Lizard Peninsular.

Regardless of the weather conditions it is worth scanning both the estuary mouth and Falmouth Bay.

It is even possible to sea watch from the comfort of the car!

Small numbers of seals can often be seen at low water lying on rocks around Black Rock in the middle of the estuary mouth.

However, for the best views binoculars or a telescope are recommended.

Closer sightings may be had of individual seals which can turn up anywhere around the rocks at any time of year.

Dolphins and porpoises

The main species are Common and Bottlenose Dolphin which can show up at any time of the year but their appearances are unpredictable.

There is always the chance of seeing either Harbour Porpoises or Risso’s Dolphin.

Occasionally small pods of dolphins will enter the Fal estuary to feed in the Carrick Roads.

Basking Sharks and whales

Basking Sharks have been recorded between May and September but their appearance is dependent on settled weather and an abundance of inshore plankton.

Distant Minke Whale have been recorded and one thought to be this species nearly stranded itself off the nearby beach of Swanpool in 2008.

As recently as 2013 a small Pilot Whale beached itself on nearby Castle Beach .

The small headland does not have nesting seabirds but the surrounding waters attract good numbers of diving birds.

All year round seabirds include Cormorants, Shags, Fulmars, Gannets, Guillemot and Razorbills.

Small numbers of Common Scoter, Eider Duck, Divers and Grebe occur but mainly in the winter.

Best times to see seabirds

During strong onshore south westerly to south easterly winds, particularly between April and October, birds normally further out to sea can be pushed closer to the headland.

Several species of Skua, Shearwater, Petrel and good numbers of Kittiwake occur in favourable conditions.

However, even during onshore winds many birds may still pass by well out to sea so binoculars and a scope are recommended.

Other birds

At low tide the rocks below Pendennis head often have Purple Sandpiper in winter and flocks of Whimbrel may drop in on their spring passage.

Sandwich Tern arrive in April to spend the summer feeding in Falmouth Bay and the estuary.

Peregrine Falcons are regularly seen along with Ravens.

Black Redstart over winter in Falmouth and may be recorded around buildings and the coastal footpaths.

In recent years increasing numbers of Mediterranean Gulls have been seen around the Falmouth coastline. They are commonest between the Autumn and Spring and may often be seen flying past Pendennis Point.

The point is not known for migrants but a few Wheatear often drop in briefly in the Spring.

Where to see dolphins in Cornwall

Cornwall is a haven for wildlife watchers, where the diverse landscape of countryside and coast is home to many creatures. If it’s dolphins you’re looking for, they can frequently be seen off the Cornish coast; whether you choose to charter a boat, take a sea tour or simply chance a glimpse at these creatures whilst walking the coast path, our guide should help to maximise your chances of spotting a pod of dolphins.

Best times of year to see dolphins in Cornwall

There is a chance of seeing dolphins off the Cornish coast for the full 12 months of the year if you’re lucky, but generally, the summer is when sightings are most frequent. For those wishing to head out on a wildlife-spotting boat trip, these typically run between March and November due to the sea and weather conditions, so you may wish to schedule your visit accordingly.

Types of dolphin seen in Cornwall

Common dolphin

Risso’s dolphin

1. Pentire Point, North Cornwall

The National Trust-owned headland of Pentire Point is a fantastic place to watch out for wildlife as bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins and harbour porpoises can frequently be spotted throughout the year. Head to this location by car, parking at the Old Lead Mine and enjoying a 10 to 15-minute walk to the best spot.

Also watch out for:

  • Basking sharks
  • Oceanic sunfish

Stay nearby in Wadebridge .

2. Porthcurno, South Cornwall

The spacious bay and mild climate mean that Penzance is one of the hotspots for seeing sea life in Cornwall and we’d highly recommend Porthcurno as your viewpoint. During the summer months, sightings of pods are common, with a number of them coming close to boats to feed and socialise; a truly magical experience for those on board.

  • Harbour porpoises
  • Minke whales
  • Leatherback turtles

Stay nearby in Porthcurno .

3. Lizard Point, West Cornwall

As the most southerly point of the UK, the tip of the Lizard Peninsula is one of the best places all round for seeing wildlife. 4. Land’s End, West Cornwall

The views at Land’s End are spectacularly beautiful, regardless of whether you manage to catch a sighting. 5. Looe Island, South Cornwall

Just a 20-minute boat ride away from Looe, Looe Island is certainly worth the trip to see the astonishing array of wildlife. • Atlantic grey seals

Stay nearby in Looe .

6. Falmouth Bay, West Cornwall

The deep waters of Falmouth create a rich and productive environment for a wide variety of wildlife, and dolphins are no exception. Sighting numbers have greatly increased over the last few years, meaning that here you’ve got a great chance of getting lucky. Stay nearby in Falmouth .

7. Porthgwarra, South Cornwall

A hotspot frequented by The Sea Watch Foundation, Porthgwarra and the nearby location of Gwennap Head provides a great station to sit atop the cliffs and scan the open seas. 8. Sennen Cove, West Cornwall

Dolphins can commonly be seen from Sennen Cove all year round, but sightings are most frequent between April and October. At high tide, the best view is from the car park, while at low tide, the mammals will sometimes come close to the beach to feed, which is a magical experience for all.

Wildlife Boat Trips & Tours FAQs

Around Cornwall’s coastline whales aren’t seen often, there is one resident that is seen more than others and that’s the Minke Whale , all other whales are rarely seen.

Most likely yes, although we can’t guarantee sightings of the dolphins in Cornwall because of mother nature, we regularly see dolphins on our 2 hour rounding boat trip in Cornwall’s popular town of Padstow.

We don’t often see Basking sharks on our Cornwall boat trips as they’re usually a couple miles offshore but can sometimes drift inshore when the weather suits their conditions. Who knows you might get lucky!

Our boat trips are suitable for everyone but please be aware we cannot control the sea conditions on the day.

If we need to cancel your trip due to rough sea conditions or minimum passenger numbers (4) not being met, we will offer to reschedule you for a later date. If this is not possible, we can issue you with a full refund. Please note: If you cancel a booking yourself, we require 24 hours notice to be able to issue a refund.

Well behaved small to medium sized dogs are permitted on our boats, however, often dogs do not like the sensation of being on a bouncy boat so please take this into consideration.

We take from ages 2 and up (babies are not permitted). Please be advised that our boats travel at speed and can be very bouncy which some young children enjoy but others are not so keen on. Individual children’s suitability is at your discretion.

Access to the boat will either be down steps on the harbourside with a large step down into the boat or using a step ladder from the beach (at low tide). We have taken many passengers with mobility issues and our crew are very accommodating to give assistance where necessary. As long as you can make it up/down a flight of stairs either with or without assistance, you should be fine to access the boat.

Cetacean Researcher

Sam Plowright

I’ve had a passion for the conservation of our marine environment since a very young age after being brought up in Cornwall and around the water and boats in Falmouth, seeing all of the diverse wildlife that the Cornish coastlines have to offer. As a result, I have completed my level 2 powerboats license and a course surrounding the identification of seabirds and marine mammals. All these experiences have led to me successfully applying to join Plymouth University to complete a degree in Ocean Science and Marine Conservation, where I’m now in my second year. My current research involves the beginning of my final year project where I will be looking at the effect of marine traffic on the numbers of common dolphins in Falmouth, which will be using the data that you allow us to collect aboard AK Wildlife Cruises!

I joined the team as a volunteer last year and I have been able to witness some truly amazing sights with by far the most amazing encounter being a collection of different groups of bottlenose dolphins amounting to over 200 in a small area! My aim for this year is to pass on the knowledge that I have around cetaceans to anyone who joins us onboard and promote the education of the conservation needed to a whole host of different communities to protect our vital marine ecosystems!
