The only stand-alone event organized and produced exclusively for esports organizers, event-rights holders and destination/hospitality industry representatives.

The explosive growth of esports and its impact on the travel industry will be discussed in a series of education sessions at the EsportsTravel Summit.

The EsportsTravel   Summit was launched in conjunction with the TEAMS Conference & Expo in Orlando in 2017. The Summit was an immediate success because it helped fill an information vacuum that exists for both organizers of esports events and those in the travel and tourism industry who want to understand and profit from the esports phenomenon. Globally, the number of esports enthusiasts is estimated at 191 million people–and growing.

While video games have been around for more than 40 years, a transformation is occurring in the video-gaming space that will elevate the players above the games. Live events are becoming the ultimate forum for skill and achievement for players. And spectators are flocking to the live events because of their interest in the games and the rising prominence of the players. It is this transformation that is creating many new opportunities, including record levels of investment in esports teams and the development of esports specific venues.

Just as the major sports leagues have identified esports as the best way to connect with the next generation of fans, visionary venues, destinations and sports organizations can leverage the esports phenomenon to attract the next generation of visitors and followers.

In 2018, Northstar Meetings Group held the first-ever stand-alone EsportsTravel   Summit , July 17-18 in Las Vegas and will also hold the second annual EsportsTravel   Summit in conjunction with the TEAMS Conference & Expo October 1-4 in Louisville. The Summits’ unique mission will be to continue to educate esports stakeholders on the nexus between venues, destinations, the travel industry and esports. The biggest names in the esports world will be included as presenters.

Welcome to the vanguard of the sports-event industry. Welcome to the EsportsTravel   Summit !

Raleigh hosts Esports Travel Summit as it looks to attract tournaments

Michael Perchick Image

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Local tourism officials, businesses, and universities are taking part in the Esports Travel Summit in Raleigh as they look to draw future events to the state.

"People are here. So, (it's) one thing to hear about it, read about it, even see videos, but actually physically coming in and seeing what they're able to offer and all the great things that we have here, how nice of an area it actually is," said Caleb Smith, co-founder of North Carolina Esports Academy in Cary.

A report by PLAYHRDR Advisors, the Greater Raleigh Esports Organizing Committee and students from the Niner Esports program at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte listed Raleigh as a "Top 5 Major Esports Event Host Destination between 2021 and 2023."

"Raleigh as a destination is just amazing. The team is so involved and dedicated to Esports and this is the state-of-the-art. We would love to see this across the US with all the governments and cities involved as much as Raleigh is. We are hoping to find more opportunities in the future to bring more events to Raleigh," said Jascha Braeker, a Hospitality Manager with ESL FACEIT Group.

Previous Esports events at PNC Arena and the Raleigh Convention Center have generated millions in economic impact, including hotel books, restaurant, and retail sales. The growing presence has also been felt at the university level, with NC State utilizing a $16 million grant from the state to expand its operations.

"We are in the process of developing an Esports arena that will be opening up in a couple of years in Raleigh," said Cody Elsen, NC State's Esports Program Director.

Currently, it's treated as an extracurricular activity.

"We have over 1,000 students that are involved in Esports at NC State right now in the club, but we will definitely do varsity competitive teams at some point with structure, coaching, staff, resources," said Elsen.

Elsen explained they are working to bring events to campus, noting possible locations include Reynolds Coliseum and Hunt Library.

"A lot of the science, technology, engineering and math goes into this. Tons of analytic work, analyzing things within the game and out of the game. Then obviously it's digital, like the marketing side, the business management," said Elsen.

The establishment of such programs is a consideration for students at community colleges looking at furthering their education.

"I teach them soft skills that are leadership, time management, decision making under duress," added Tu Nguyen, the Esports Coach at Guilford Technical Community College "It is 100% a question for every student-athlete I have. They will immediately ask, 'Are there any staff-led or coach-led situations in North Carolina?'"

Drawing events to the region has also allowed students hands-on networking opportunities while allowing them to gain experience.

"What really appeals to me about being this close to Raleigh is that they can come here and there are often volunteer opportunities," said Dwayne Meekins, the Esports Coordinator at North Carolina A &T University.

On Friday, the North Carolina Esports Summit will be held at the Raleigh Convention Center, with NC Varsity Esports + STEM League High School Championship held Saturday and Sunday.

Esports Travel Summit

On December 14th, the world of esports and video-game tournaments got the attention it deserved in the form of EsportsTravel Summit: the “largest gathering of esports tournament and video-game event organizers and the only event focused on the travel side of the esports industry” according to their website. Presented by SportsTravel and hosted by SportsPittsburgh, the event attracted hundreds of esports enthusiasts and aspiring event organizers to listen to more than 30 speakers from some of the biggest names in the esports industry. The speakers discussed goals, beliefs, how to succeed in esports, and how to navigate the tourism boom associated with the surge in the industry’s popularity.

Johnny Weaver of OG Evo Media attended the event and listened to many incredible experts while also sharing his own background of 20 years. In the photo above is presenter Danny Martin, an esports subject matter expert at SMU and co-founder/CEO of Esposure. Danny discussed the collision of education and esports, his own mission in the esports industry, and what aspects of the industry currently need the most focus and help. The 2021 Esports Travel Summit was a massive success with a record-setting number of event organizers and destination representatives, and plans have already been made for Daytona Beach to host the EsportsTravel Summit event of 2022. If it is anything like this year, it’s sure to be great, and OG Evo Media will be there!

Northstar Launches Bid Process for EsportsTravel Summit

As the in-person esports event market continues to grow exponentially, forward-thinking destinations compete to attract them.

2021 EsportsTravel Summit

The Sports Division of Northstar Meetings Group , organizer of the TEAMS Conference & Expo and the recently announced TEAMS Europe , has announced a formal bidding process to identify potential host-city partners for the EsportsTravel Summit , the leading conference for esports event organizers, in 2024, 2025, 2026 and 2027.

TEAMS and the EsportsTravel Summit are the preeminent gatherings for organizers of traditional sports and esports tournaments and events, respectively. The EsportsTravel Summit is the exclusive co-location partner for the United States eSports Federation , while TEAMS is the exclusive home to the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee’s SportsLink and NGB Best Practices Seminar.

“The EsportsTravel Summit was an immediate success because it helped fill an information vacuum that exists for organizers of video game events and those who want to understand and profit from the esports phenomenon,” said Jason Gewirtz , vice president, Sports Division, Northstar Meetings Group and the executive editor and publisher of SportsTravel . “The biggest brands in the esports world attend the EsportsTravel Summit because it’s the only event of its kind that bridges the esports world to the travel industry — the venues, destinations and service providers they need to partner with to produce successful, memorable in-person experiences.”

The EsportsTravel Summit will be held in in Daytona Beach, June 21–23, 2022, and in Toronto, July 11–13, 2023, and again in 2028. The event includes a robust educational program focused on the most important issues facing in-person esports events, as well as a marketplace where esports event organizers and destinations and suppliers interested in attracting their events can meet one-on-one in pre-scheduled appointments.

The announcement of the formal bid process for future years comes as the EsportsTravel Summit cemented several multiyear sponsorships that have been secured or extended during the pandemic. Those deals include multiyear partnerships with (in alphabetical order) ASM Global, the Atlantic City Sports Commission and Meet AC, CSL International, the Dallas Sports Commission, the Daytona Beach Area CVB, Destination Toronto, the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance, the Myrtle Beach Regional Sports Alliance, Populous, the Snohomish County Sports Commission, TripMate and Visit Anaheim.

“The continued support we’ve received from our sponsors demonstrates their steadfast commitment to the future of the sports-related travel industry,” said Shalise DeMott , vice president of sales, Northstar Meetings Group. “The ongoing interest in the EsportsTravel Summit demonstrates that destinations are thinking strategically in regard to developing a playbook for the esports industry, one of the fastest-growing sectors in the sports-related travel industry overall, and a critical sector for reaching future generations of passionate group travelers.”

Destinations interested in bidding for the EsportsTravel Summit have until June 1, 2022, to submit their bids. Interested cities are encouraged to use the time before that date to ask questions they may have about the bidding process. Cities wishing to receive the bidding information should contact either Jason Gewirtz at [email protected] or Shalise DeMott at [email protected] .

After days of water-quality concerns caused by heavy rains last week, the men's and women's triathlon dove into the Seine River in a moment that Paris city officials praised as proof its years-long plan to clean the waterway had worked.

Paris 2024 said out of the initial three million tickets bought internationally, 18% were from the U.S. That would mean at least 540,000 tickets are in the hands of Americans before you get into the resale market or other means of entry into events.

Icymi: esportstravel summit announces raleigh as future host.

Thursday, July 20, 2023, 12pm by visitRaleigh

esports travel summit

GRCVB's Public Relations team released this news item last week, and we're republishing it here in case you missed it.

Raleigh's securing of the EsportsTravel Summit in 2024 is one more indication that our area has become a major hub in the fast-paced and exponentially-growing esports entertainment industry. .............

Northstar Meetings Group  has announced Raleigh as the upcoming host for the 2024  EsportsTravel Summit —the only event of its kind for esports tournament and event organizers. Hosted by  Visit Raleigh , the  Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance  and the  Raleigh Convention Center , the event will be on May 29–31, 2024. The announcement was made on the final day of the 2023 EsportsTravel Summit in Toronto.

Produced by Northstar Meetings Group, the EsportsTravel Summit is the premier business conference focused on esports tournaments and events as well as the role of the travel industry in the continued growth of video gaming and esports. The event facilitates partnerships between esports organizations and the travel industry while providing educational programming, a marketplace with one-on-one appointments and multiple business networking opportunities.

“Raleigh is an ideal host for our upcoming EsportsTravel Summit,” said Jason Gewirtz, Vice President of the Sports Division of Northstar Meetings Group, which organizes the event. “We are excited to get to work with our partners at Visit Raleigh to plan for a dynamic, productive and educational experience for the esports events industry. Our attendees will enjoy seeing how this forward-thinking destination has planned out its esports ecosystem and embraced the future of the events industry.”

Esports at RCC

In 2024, the EsportsTravel Summit will be staged at the Raleigh Convention Center. In recent years, Raleigh has emerged as a leading global host destination for esports, cementing its reputation as a market that celebrates the competitive video game culture and community. The capital city has become a global hotspot for hosting the most diverse national and international game title events and is focused on becoming a leading global destination for esports industry research, development and education.

In the past 12 months, Raleigh has hosted several major esports tournaments, including the 2022 Fortnite Championship Series Invitational, the 2022 Call of Duty Major 1, the 2022 Apex Legends Global Series Championship, the 2023 League of Legends-Spring League Championship Series and the most recent Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Qualifier, with events hosted at the Raleigh Convention Center and PNC Arena. Overall, esports has generated more than 30,000 overnight visitors for the destination, with an average of 19 countries represented per event.

“We’ve watched with great interest for years what Raleigh has accomplished in esports and we are thrilled to bring the EsportsTravel Summit to one of the epicenters of esports in the United States,” Gewirtz said. “Raleigh’s track record in esports and its ability to attract top-tier esports events speaks for itself.”

Greater Raleigh is also home to numerous video game and esports endemic companies, including leading developer Epic Games, technology providers Lenovo, Cisco and NVIDIA, plus open-source software company Red Hat. The region has also created the Greater Raleigh Esports Local Organizing Committee (GRELOC), a local group that has proven paramount to the execution of the local, regional, national and international strategy driving Greater Raleigh’s success in esports and video gaming initiatives.

“Greater Raleigh is excited to host the 2024 EsportsTravel Summit,” said Loren Gold, Executive Vice President of Visit Raleigh. “We are looking forward to welcoming all industry attendees and offering them an immersive and educational experience that only Greater Raleigh can deliver.”

So far so good: After eight months, Summit Prep seems to be meeting the high expectations of its founders So far so good: After eight months, Summit Prep seems to be meeting the high expectations of its founders (April 14, 2004)

** Now in its eighth month of operation, Summit is a charter school with five teachers and a freshman class of 80 students. If the school reaches full enrollment in the 2006-07 school year, Summit will have 20 teachers and a maximum of 400 students in four grade levels. ** About 52 percent of Summit's students come from Redwood City, 23 percent from Menlo Park, 7 percent from Portola Valley and 4 percent from Woodside. Executive director Diane Tavenner says Menlo Park will be more strongly represented in next year's freshman class, which is two students short of the 100-student maximum. The directors recently extended the maximum to 110 to accommodate changes in plans by prospective students. ** The idea for the school began three years ago, when several Portola Valley and Woodside families interested in starting a small, college-prep charter high school asked for a sponsorship from the Sequoia Union High School District. The district turned them down, but the families found a willing district in Tuolumne County, from which they obtained a five-year charter. ** Of the 84 students who enrolled in September, four have left. To succeed at Summit, says Ms. Tavenner, it helps to be well prepared, and to have strong home support and a peer group that respects an academic focus. E-mail a friend a link to this story.

PAX West 2024: What to know about the gaming convention this year

It’s been 20 years since Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik first launched the Penny Arcade Expo in Bellevue; the creators of the popular “Penny Arcade” webcomic (which began in 1998 and is still going strong today) had wanted to attend a convention focused purely on gaming and gaming culture.

Two decades later, the convention now known as PAX West (both a nod to the acronym attendees preferred to call the event and to help distinguish it from the other annual PAX conventions held outside of Seattle) has outgrown its original home and has moved to the Seattle Convention Center (where the event now extends to both the Summit and Arch buildings). According to Jon Peddie Research, a technology research and consulting firm, PAX West 2023 saw 120,000 attendees , making it the largest gaming event in the U.S. (Penny Arcade and Emerald City Comic Con producer ReedPop, which together put on PAX West, stopped reporting attendance numbers for the event after 2011.)

This year’s four-day event, running Aug. 30-Sept. 2, will kick off with a keynote speech by Phil Spencer, CEO of Redmond-based Microsoft Gaming. The head of Xbox will discuss his 30-plus years in the gaming industry at Microsoft, according to event organizers.

Here are some of the highlights of this year’s convention. (For those unable to attend, PAX West will stream from four Twitch channels , focusing on panel content and esports.)

Dungeons & Dragons

What better way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons than by learning how to play the outrageously popular role-playing game? PAX West will have learning sessions ranging from 90 minutes to four hours, catering to those new to the game. (D&D pros are, of course, welcome to join the adventure.) There will also be surprise scenarios throughout the convention in celebration of D&D’s golden jubilee.

Expert panels are a highlight of any PAX, and this year’s event proves no different. A main focus this year centers on explaining the gaming industry to attendees, including getting tips on how to get started from industry veterans, learning about intellectual property rights and networking, and even watching award-winning developers break down what it’s like to make a game live onstage. Other highlights include:

  • A design breakdown of Shadow of the Erdtree, the massive expansion to the acclaimed Elden Ring video game. (Aug. 30)
  • A preview panel of Duskmourn: House of Horror, the latest set for Magic: The Gathering, set to be released in September. (Aug. 31)
  • Capcom, the creator of beloved franchises including Resident Evil and Monster Hunter, will be at PAX West this year to talk about some of the company’s most anticipated upcoming releases, including new content for Street Fighter 6 and Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. (Sept. 1)
  • The PAX Cosplay Showcase, which is open for all ages this year. (Sept. 1)

If you’re looking to get some hands-on time with demos for upcoming games and new tech and hardware, you’ll want to make your way to PAX’s Expo Hall. Exhibitors include Larian Studios, creator of the phenomenal Baldur’s Gate 3 video game; the needs-no-explanation Nintendo of America and The Pokémon Co.; and Seattle-based studios Aggro Crab Games (Another Crab’s Treasure) and Ironwood Studios ( Pacific Drive ).

On a related note: The PAX Rising Showcase, a curated collection of games that’ll be highlighted on the show floor, is always worth checking out. The winners of this year’s showcase haven’t been announced yet, but previous years included Celeste, Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime and Little Kitty, Big City (all of which you should play).

And this is all separate from the hundreds of gaming consoles and PCs you can play on, including space dedicated to tabletop games. (For those looking to flex their gaming skills, myriad tournaments will be happening during the convention, from trading card games to board games to console/PC video games.)
