Lisbon Airport; an independent tourism guide for 2024

Lisbon has a single airport that handles all international and domestic flights. The airport comprises of two terminal buildings and is conveniently located within the city limits, being only 7km from the historic centre of Lisbon. The main terminal (T1) dates from 1983, and its age and lack of capacity is beginning to show, especially at peak times.

This insufficient capacity is evident in the long queues for passport control, general passenger confusion in the main waiting areas, long walks to the gates and dreadful traffic around the site. These issues are no worse than with any other older European airport, and most passengers who leave enough time and are patient will travel through relatively hassle free.

Lisbon Airport has two terminal buildings: Terminal 1, which handles all arrivals and most international departures, and Terminal 2, which serves as the departure terminal for the low-cost airlines.

Terminal 1 is older, but is generally fine for travelling through, whereas Terminal 2 epitomises everything that is bad about budget flying. There are massive queues for everything, the facilities are basic, and the terminal is unbearably crowded at peak times. If you are departing from Terminal 2, always leave yourself sufficient time to navigate the many long queues – be that for bag drop off, security, passport control, or even getting food at McDonald's.

This article will provide an independent tourism guide to Lisbon Airport, and aims to help you pass through as easily as possible. Info: The IATA airport code for Lisbon airport is ‘LIS’. Related articles: Airport to the city centre – metro guide

Terminal 2 handles departures for the low-cost airlines.

Two essential tips when departing from Lisbon Airport

There are two unique aspects of Lisbon Airport that could impact your departure, which are:

1 -Passport control is located after the duty-free shops . If your flight is departing the Schengen free travel region of Europe (such as the UK, USA or Brazil) you will need to pass through passport control, which is situated after the duty-free area and before the gate. Many visitors have missed their flights by spending too long in the duty-free or food court areas, subsequently getting caught in the lengthy queues for passport control. Therefore, as soon as your gate is called, it is advisable to proceed directly to it.

2 - Many of the low-cost airlines depart from Terminal 2. This terminal is situated 1km to the west of Terminal 1 and has no metro connection. A free shuttle bus service runs between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, departing every 10 to 20 minutes. When travelling to T2 by metro, always factor in this additional stage (which can take 15 to 20 minutes) and always verify your departure terminal before heading to the airport. There can be very long queues to pass through immigration on entering Portugal from outside of Europe at peak times – always try to exit the plane as quickly as possible.

Travel from Lisbon Airport to the city centre

Lisbon Airport is located 6km from the city centre, and there is excellent public transport for onward travel. There are three methods for you to choose from: the metro, a taxi, or a ride-hailing app (such as Uber or Bolt).

Metro The metro provides the best option for most visitors, as it is inexpensive, safe, and there are stations located throughout the entire city. Metro services depart every 5 to 10 minutes, and the airport is connected to the Red Line. A single ticket to anywhere in the city costs €1.80, which is charged to the re-useable ‘Navegante’ card (€0.50 for the initial purchase).

Another choice is the zapping ticket, which loads money onto the ‘Navegante’ card and can be used for all public transport in Lisbon. This is a good choice, as fares are slightly cheaper (€1.47 for the metro) and it means you don't have to be fumbling with cash when boarding trams and buses (as they do not accept card payments). We always recommend having a ‘Navegante’ with €15 of ‘zapping’ credit for a short stay in Lisbon.

The majority of tourists have accommodation close to the historic centre of Lisbon, and within the Baixa, Alfama and Chiado districts. To travel to these areas, you will need to change to either the blue or green metro line at the São Sebastião or Alameda metro stations. The single metro ticket covers the entire journey, and connections are well signposted - making it a hassle-free experience. Related articles: Lisbon Metro

Ride Hailing Apps There are two ride-hailing apps in Portugal, Uber and Bolt, and their fares are much cheaper than regular taxis. There is a single, designated area where passengers get picked up, which is located in the short-stay car park (referred to as P2). This pick-up point is to the north of the arrivals building, just past the Starbucks coffee shop.

Lisbon airport Uber Bolt pick-up area

The entrance to the Uber/Bolt pick-up area

The issue with both Bolt and Uber at peak times is the heavy traffic around the airport. This means pick-ups can take a long time, and drivers will even reject rides. If you find your app continuously requesting drivers and nothing is connecting, it may be easier to take a taxi.

The pick-up area has been converted from the short-stay car park.

Taxi If you are in a hurry, a taxi transfer provides the fastest means of transport, and Lisbon's taxis have some of the cheapest fares in Europe. Unfortunately, taxi drivers have a reputation for overcharging tired or unsuspecting tourists. All fares should be based on the taximeter, but some drivers insist on a set fare. If the driver requests a set fee, make sure this is agreed upon before leaving the airport. At peak times, there can be long queues for taxis, but there will always be a constant flow of taxis arriving.

The basic Lisbon taxi fare is €0.47 per km, with a minimum fare of €3.25. The taxis charge €14.80 per hour for waiting (or €0.25 per minute stuck in traffic!), and there are additional supplements for luggage (€1.60). At night (9pm to 6am), the fares increase by 20% (€0.56 per km), and 7-seater taxis are 20% more expensive. Expect to pay between €10 and €15 to travel from the airport to the historic centre (such as the Baixa district) in a 4-seater taxi at the daytime rate. Advice: If you are travelling outside of the city limits, a taxi will be very expensive; a pre-booked private transfer is a better option.

Terminal 1 - Lisbon airport

Terminal 1 can be a confusing terminal to travel through, due to the numerous minor expansions and alternations that have been made to maximise the usage of every single area. This is a terminal where you must follow the signs (of which there are many) and not the masses of often-lost tourists.

The only real logical thing about Terminal 1 are the gates; the northern gates (designated by an N) are for flights leaving the Schengen region, while the southern gates (S) are for flights within Europe. If you have an N gate, you will have an extra passport control check to go through after the duty-free and shopping area, so always leave enough time.

The departures wing is to the south of the terminal, and the arrivals area is on the eastern side on a lower level. They are connected, but feel like completely different airports - with arrivals being modern and spacious, while departures is older and claustrophobic.

The facilities of Lisbon Airport are typical of a major international airport, with numerous duty-free shops, overpriced restaurants and decent (paid) lounges. It should be noted that there is a huge difference in services and quality between Terminal 1 and the low-cost Terminal 2.

Lisbon Airport is managed by ANA (which is part of the Vinci group), and details of flights, arrivals, and delays can be found on their website: https://www.ana.pt /en/lis/ home

Terminal 2 of Lisbon airport

Terminal 2 was originally constructed for domestic flights, but its role has since changed and it now handles departures for the low-cost airlines.

The building consists of two giant rooms connected by a subterranean security area, and is as basic as you can get for a terminal. Terminal 2 suffers with major queues for everything (often self-inflicted by the low-cost airlines themselves) and a total lack of space once through security. Always give yourself plenty of time and expect a lot of standing around. Once through security, there is a McDonald's for inexpensive food and drinks.

It is not possible to walk from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2, and a free bus service connects them. If you are travelling by metro to Terminal 2, do factor in this extra bus ride as it can add 15 to 20 minutes to the total journey.

The check-in at Terminal 2 on a quiet day. In summer, expect the whole hall to be packed.

Facilities at Lisbon Airport

Internet access: There is free Wi-Fi throughout the airport buildings, but it is often slow (from over demand), especially in Terminal 2. The free Wi-Fi network is called ‘VINCI Airports wifi’ and it requires an email address for the sign-up process. Further information can be found on the ANA website: www.ana.pt/../free-wifi

Currency Exchange: This is located in the Terminal 1 arrivals hall if cash is urgently needed. It is much wiser to exchange currency back at home for better rates.

ATMs: There are multiple ATMs in the arrivals and departure halls, but always check the fees that are associated with withdrawing your cash when using them. Euronet ATMs charge significantly higher fees than regular bank ATMs such as Santander.

Insight: It is always advisable to have some cash with you while in Portugal, as there are many places that won't accept card payments.

Duty-Free: There is a good duty-free area in Terminal 1, but Terminal 2's shopping area is very limited.

Left luggage and lockers: In front of departures are automated left luggage facilities, which cost €9 for 3 hours or €16 for 24 hours.

Lisbon airport Left luggage and lockers

Vat refund: If you reside outside of Europe, you may be entitled to a VAT refund on items costing more than €50 (such as a camera, phone or expensive gifts) from shops that participate in the scheme (called Tax Free Shopping). Further details can be found on the ANA website: https://www.ana.pt/ en/lis/services-shopping /essential-services/ vat-refund

Airport lounges: There are three airport lounges in Terminal 1 and none in Terminal 2. The three options are ABC Airport Business Centre (before security), ANA Lounge and Blue Lounge (both after security). The entry for them is €30, and the ANA Lounge (€35) has shower facilities.

Flight transfers from Terminal 1 to 2

There is no airside transfer from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2, so always plan sufficient time when connecting flights.

To transfer from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2, you must pass through immigration, collect luggage, pass through customs, ride the bus from T1 to T2, check luggage in, then pass through security and immigration.

This can be a very slow process, so always allow plenty of time for flight connections. If you miss your flight, the low-cost airlines will not put you on the next flight and you will have to purchase another ticket.

Airport expansion

Lisbon Airport is the main international and domestic airport of Portugal, handling 14 million passengers a year.

It is one of the most congested airports in Europe and one of the only major airports to have a landing flight path directly over the city. There have been plans for a new airport on the opposite side of the Tejo Estuary at a disused airbase near Montijo or at Santarem for years, but barely any progress has been made.

Informational Guide to Lisbon Airport (LIS) Humberto Delgado

Lisbon Airport Passenger Guide

lisbon airport tourist information

This guide is designed to provide you with essential information to make your journey through Lisbon Airport as smooth and stress-free as possible. From biometric identification to check-in procedures and customs, we’ve got you covered with all you need to know for a seamless airport experience.

Table of Contents

1. Biometric Identification at Lisbon Airport

In an era where security and convenience are paramount, Lisbon Airport has embraced biometric identification technology, offering passengers a faster and more secure way to travel. This cutting-edge technology utilizes unique physical or behavioral characteristics, such as facial features, to verify travelers’ identities. Here’s how you can take advantage of biometric identification at Lisbon Airport:

  • Enrollment: On your first visit, you’ll need to enroll in the biometric system. This involves capturing your biometric data, such as a facial scan, which is then securely stored for future use.
  • Usage: Once enrolled, you can use biometric lanes at check-in, security checkpoints, and boarding gates. Simply look into the biometric scanner for identity verification, streamlining your passage through these points.
  • Benefits: The primary benefits include enhanced security, as biometric data is unique to each individual, and efficiency, reducing the time spent in queues and removing the need for repeated document checks.

Travelers are encouraged to participate in this voluntary program, designed to expedite your journey while ensuring the highest security standards.

2. Check-in Procedures

Checking in is the first step in your journey through Lisbon Airport, and knowing your options can significantly ease this process. Lisbon Airport offers several check-in methods to accommodate the preferences and needs of all travelers:

Online Check-in: Available from 24 hours up to 1 hour before your flight, online check-in allows you to select your seat, print your boarding pass, or receive it on your mobile device. This option is highly recommended for those looking to save time at the airport.

Kiosk Check-in: For those who prefer to check in at the airport, self-service kiosks are conveniently located in the departure hall. Follow the on-screen instructions to check in and print your boarding pass and, if necessary, your luggage tags.

Counter Check-in: Traditional check-in counters are available for passengers who require personal assistance, are traveling in a large group, or have special needs. It’s advisable to arrive at least 2 hours before your flight for domestic travel and 3 hours for international flights to allow ample time for this process.

3. Navigating Through Customs

Navigating through customs is an integral part of international travel, and Lisbon Airport ensures a streamlined process for both arriving and departing passengers. Understanding the customs procedures can significantly ease your passage and prevent any unnecessary delays. For passengers arriving in Portugal, it’s crucial to be aware of what items need to be declared, the duty-free allowances, and which goods are restricted or prohibited.

Upon arrival, you’ll encounter two channels: green (nothing to declare) and red (goods to declare). If you’re carrying goods that exceed the allowances (such as tobacco, alcohol, or new items worth more than €430), or if you’re unsure about your items, you should go through the red channel to declare them. This step is vital to avoid fines or confiscation of undeclared goods. For those traveling within the EU, remember that while there are no limits on what you can buy and take with you when traveling between EU countries, you should carry goods for personal use only.

4. Passports and Visas Requirements

For many travelers, Lisbon Airport serves as the gateway to Portugal and the broader Schengen Area. The passport and visa requirements for entering Portugal vary significantly depending on your nationality, the purpose of your visit, and the duration of your stay. All travelers arriving at Lisbon Airport must present a valid passport. EU citizens can also use a national ID card.

Visa requirements are dependent on several factors. Citizens from EU countries, the EEA, Switzerland, and visa-exempt countries (such as the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand) do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period. However, for longer stays or for purposes such as work or study, a visa may be required regardless of your nationality.

Non-EU nationals should check their visa requirements well in advance of their travel dates. The Schengen Visa, if required, allows for travel within the entire Schengen Area for short stays. Applications should be made through the consulate or embassy of the country that is your primary destination or, if no single country qualifies, the country of first entry.

5. Security Screening Process

The security screening process at Lisbon Airport is designed to ensure the safety of all passengers, staff, and aircraft. Understanding and preparing for this process can significantly expedite your journey through the airport. When you approach the security checkpoint, you’ll be required to present your boarding pass and possibly your identification. Here’s what else to expect and how you can prepare:

  • Personal Items and Electronics: All personal items, including your jacket, belt, and shoes, may need to be placed in a tray for X-ray screening. Laptops, tablets, and other large electronic devices must be removed from your carry-on baggage and screened separately.
  • Liquids, Aerosols, and Gels (LAGs): There are restrictions on carrying LAGs in your hand luggage. All liquids must be in containers of no more than 100ml and placed together in a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag of no more than 1 liter in capacity. Exceptions are made for medications, baby food, and special dietary requirements, but these should be presented separately at the checkpoint.
  • Prohibited Items: Certain items are not allowed in your carry-on or checked baggage, including sharp objects, flammable materials, and some batteries. Check the Lisbon Airport website for a detailed list of prohibited items to avoid delays or confiscations.
  • Body Screening: You may be required to pass through a metal detector or a full-body scanner. Follow the instructions of the security staff, and if a pat-down is necessary, know that it will be conducted by an officer of the same gender, with respect for your privacy and dignity.

Tips for a Smooth Security Screening:

  • Arrive at the security checkpoint with your boarding pass and ID ready.
  • Prepare your liquids bag and electronics before reaching the front of the line.
  • Wear easily removable shoes and minimal metal jewelry to speed up the process.

6. Cash Movement Limits

Traveling with cash or equivalent instruments can be necessary for many travelers, but it’s crucial to be aware of the regulations governing cash movements to and from Lisbon Airport. Within the European Union, there is a threshold above which you must declare your funds when crossing borders:

  • Cash Declaration Requirement: If you are entering or leaving the EU with €10,000 or more in cash (or the equivalent in other currencies), you must declare this amount to customs. This regulation is aimed at combating money laundering and terrorism financing.
  • Declaration Process: The declaration should be made at the customs office, using the form provided for this purpose. It is essential to declare accurately and completely, as false declarations can result in fines or the confiscation of the undeclared amount.
  • Beyond Cash: The regulation covers not only cash but also traveler’s cheques, bearer negotiable instruments, and certain types of gold. Be sure to consider the total value of all such items when determining if you meet the declaration threshold.

Traveling through Lisbon Airport can be a smooth and efficient experience with the right preparation. By familiarizing yourself with the processes for biometric identification, check-in, customs, passports and visas, security screening, and cash movement limits, you can navigate the airport with ease and confidence. Remember, the key to a hassle-free journey is preparation and awareness of the regulations and requirements. Whether you’re arriving, departing, or simply transiting through Lisbon Airport, taking the time to understand these procedures will ensure a more enjoyable travel experience.

Description of Humberto Delgado Airport

Lisbon has one airport that handles all international and domestic flights, the Humberto Delgado Airport [LIS], also called Lisbon Airport. It takes about 20 minutes, depending on traffic. The approximate price for the trip from the airport to the center is about 15 €, including luggage fee.

  • Important: Please make sure that the taxi meter is switched on.

An alternative to Taxis is Uber. However, the prices are slightly lower than regular taxis.

One drawback is that Uber is not allowed to stop outside the arrival terminal, so sometimes it may be tricky to find the pickup location.

Bolt is essentially Portugal’s version of Uber. It is the most popular ridesharing service in the country. Prices are much cheaper than Uber, which is why locals prefer to use Bolt.  You can find more information on Bolt and Uber here.

Tip : We recommend downloading the Bolt app in advance so you can get a quick airport transfer and cheap rides within the city. In addition, you can use the app to use the electric scooters in Lisbon and to  order food .

Transfer inside the airport: There is a free shuttle bus that connects the Terminal 1 Departures area with Terminal 2. It operates from 03:30 to 01:30 the following day and runs every ten minutes. The trip takes only 3 minutes.

Travelers' guide.

Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport

Lisbon's airport is named after a general of the Portuguese Air Force, who founded national airline TAP Air Portugal.

T he major European airlines ( British Airways , KLM , Air France , Lufthansa , Iberia ) have daily flights to Lisbon, and, together with national airline TAP Air Portugal , connect the city to the rest of the continent. Low-cost carriers, such as EasyJet and Ryanair , also have routes to and from Lisbon, and TAP Air Portugal, Delta , United and American Airlines also connect it to the United States (mostly cities on the east coast). The European cities with more flights to Lisbon are Paris, London, Barcelona and Madrid.

Lisbon Airport Terminals

Terminal 1 is for all arrivals and for both international and domestic departures, while terminal 2 is for departures of the low-cost airlines. The two terminals are linked by a free shuttle. Airport facilities include duty-free shops, car rental agencies, a tourist information office, ATMs, restaurants, and cafés.

Shopping at Lisbon Airport

Lisbon’s airport has expanded its shopping area, and there’s a number of international brands by the food hall of Terminal 1. A large duty-free shop is found right after the security screening area. The shopping area of terminal 2 is very limited.

ATMs and Currency Exchange at the Airport

There are ATMs all over the airport, but most are found by the departures and arrivals areas of terminal 1. If you’re traveling from a non-Eurozone country and need more euros than the ATM can give you, there’s a currency exchange office in the arrivals hall.

WiFi at Lisbon Airport

Free WiFi is available at Lisbon Airport, all you have to do is register with your email.

Luggage Storage at Lisbon Airport

There’s a luggage storage facility at the airport, with a 24-hour charge that depends on the amount (weight) of the bags and suitcases.

Car Rental at Lisbon Airport

All major car rental companies are represented at Lisbon Airport, and their offices are located in terminal 1, next to the arrivals hall. It’s not necessary (and not at all recommended) to rent a car if you’re staying in Lisbon, but it can be quite useful if you’re going to many of the beaches in the region and to explore other parts of Portugal. In the high tourist season, expect long lines and waits at these car rental companies, even if you have already reserved a car.

European Union citizens need no visa for any length of stay in Portugal. Visitors from the following countries and territories do not need a visa for visits of less than 90 days (only a passport valid for at least three months after the end of their stay): Albania, Andorra, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brazil, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Macau, Macedonia, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Monaco, Montenegro, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Saint Kitts and Nevis, San Marino, Serbia, Seychelles, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, United Kingdom, United States of America, Uruguay, Vatican, Venezuela. Citizens of all other countries will need a visa.

Transportation from and to Lisbon Airport

The most inexpensive way to reach the city center from the airport is by metro. There are also the special AeroBus service and taxis. The airport is on the red line of the metro, which terminates in the northern part of the city, so for the city center and main tourist areas, you’ll need to connect to the blue or green lines. The fastest means of transportation is therefore the taxi (or a ridesharing car). For complete details, see the guide to transportation from Lisbon airport to the city center by metro, bus and taxi .
