History [ ]

22nd century [ ].

The Columbia -class was born out of the existing, and proven, NX -class design, and included retrofitted ships such as Enterprise and USS Endeavour . In 2156 , Enterprise was the first vessel to receive the upgraded spaceframe. It was named, at the insistence of Admiral Jonathan Archer , after the first vessel of the NX -class to be lost in action, Columbia . As of September 2162 , the refit Endeavour was the last active survivor of the NX -class. All future vessels would be of the new Columbia -class. ( ST reference : Ships of the Line 2011 , ENT - Rise of the Federation novel : A Choice of Futures )

As part of newly appointed UESPA Chief of Staff Admiral Archer's fleet modernization program, eight new Columbia -class vessels were slated for construction. By July of 2165 , USS Buran and USS Shenlong were completed, USS Apollo and USS Soyuz were expected to launch around October of the same year, USS Ares and USS Charybdis in spring of 2166 and USS Phoenix and USS Valiant by 2167 . ( ENT - Rise of the Federation novel : Live by the Code )

23rd century [ ]

T'Laan's dorm

A model in T'Laan 's room.

Ships of the class received a major upgrade in the 23rd century , and were classified for escort duty. ( STO video game : Reckoning ) [1] In the Kelvin timeline , Cadet T'Laan kept a model of a Columbia -class model in her dorm room. She had recently participated in a mission that led to the rescue of the NX-class starship Slayton NX-05 . ( SA - Starfleet Academy comic : " Issue 5 "

Legendary Columbia class

The refit of the 2280s decade .

In the 2280s decade , the Columbia class received another refit, incorporating Starfleet's art deco-style new outfit. In particular, the appearance of the prototype 's components, the USS Columbia , shared its visual design language with the Oberth -class science vessel . ( STO website : Legacy : Legendary Temporal Operative Escort )

25th century [ ]

In 2410 , and as a result of the Iconian and Temporal Cold Wars , Columbia (NX-02) returned to active service. Columbia and newer sister ships were retrofitted with 25th century technology. ( STO video game : Reckoning ) [1]

Following the Battle of Excalbia in 2411 , the NX class and its two Columbia -class refit designs were overhauled to become legendary temporal operative escorts . This saw a return of the USS Columbia (NCC-2200) to service. ( STO website : Legacy : Legendary Temporal Operative Escort )

Specifications [ ]

The most noticeable difference between the NX and Columbia classes was the addition of a secondary hull which was slung underneath the saucer section . This new hull had a deep rear undercut allowing it to be positioned in the warp field 's secondary node while in flight and a more powerful, circular navigational deflector . It also housed the new, larger warp core which allowed speeds in excess of warp factor six. The extra room liberated in the primary hull by the removal of warp engineering allowed for larger senior officers ' quarters .

The dorsal connector to the saucer was located where the NX's main shuttlebay used to be, so the shuttlepod drop bays were moved to either side of it. ( ENT - Rise of the Federation novel : A Choice of Futures )

In the 25th century, the design of the Columbia -class escort refit allowed its commanding officer to choose from different designs of livery, which could be modified further at starbases . These options were designated Type 0-7, NX, NX Refit, Upgrade and Veteran. ( STO - Klingon War mission : " Welcome to Earth Spacedock ")

Furthermore, the installation of deflector shields from specific factions modified the hull appearance, including shields from the Reman Resistance , the Breen Confederacy and the Dominion . ( STO missions : " Coliseum ", " Cold Storage ", " Boldly They Rode ")

NX

Technology [ ]

As well as polarized hull plating , the Columbia -class featured deflector shields of Andorian design. For a while after the class was brought into service, use of the shields while at warp necessitated an adjustment of the warp field. This adjustment, due to difficulties in reconciling Human and Andorian technology, meant that warp speed was limited to just over warp factor three.

The class was also equipped with a tractor beam of Vulcan origin, but the Andorian shields distorted the targeting system. However all compatibility issues were solved in 2163 by Doctor Tobin Dax and his engineering team. ( ENT - Rise of the Federation novel : A Choice of Futures )

The newly built ships were upgraded with more advanced impulse assemblies and navigational deflectors manufactured by the Rigel based Grennex Aerospace shipbuilding company. ( ENT - Rise of the Federation novel : Live by the Code )

Scott Bakula Returns To Talk Star Trek: Enterprise For The First Time In Years

  • In a rare appearance, Scott Bakula discusses Star Trek: Enterprise on The D-Con Chamber for the first time in years.
  • Fans appreciate Star Trek: Enterprise more today after streaming the series on Netflix and Paramount+.
  • The D-Con Chamber is the revamped version of The Shuttlepod Show, featuring big Star Trek names interviewed by Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating.

Scott Bakula returns to talk about Star Trek: Enterprise for the first time in years when he appears as a guest on The D-Con Chamber podcast on Sunday, August 11, at 11 am PST . The D-Con Chamber is hosted by Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating, who co-starred with Scott Bakula for four seasons of Star Trek: Enterprise . Bakula played Captain Jonathan Archer, while Trinneer portrayed Chief Engineer Commander Charles "Trip" Tucker III and Keating embodied Armory Officer Lieutenant Malcolm Reed. The D-Con Chamber can be found on Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube, and wherever you get your podcasts.

Star Trek: Enterprise aired from 2001-2005 on UPN (United Paramount Network). It was the last of an 18-year run of Star Trek series and films produced by Rick Berman, who co-created Enterprise with Brannon Braga. Enterprise (its original title minus the ' Star Trek ' prefix that was added for season 3 onward) was a prequel launched with lofty ambitions, including the hopes that it could follow Star Trek: The Next Generation and become a movie franchise. Yet despite a bona fide star in Scott Bakula and the show improving greatly in its fourth and final season , Star Trek: Enterprise wasn't the hit in ratings and pop culture impact that TNG was, and UPN canceled Enterprise after 4 seasons .

Interest in Star Trek: Enterprise was renewed when the prequel series streamed on Netflix and Paramount+, with fans who skipped Enterprise during its UPN run now finding a greater appreciation for it.

Star Trek: Enterprise Cast & Character Guide

Star Trek: Enterprise introduced new faces to the prequel series set a century before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series.

Why Scott Bakula's Return To Talk Star Trek Is A Big Deal

Bakula rarely discusses star trek.

Scott Bakula appearing on The D-Con Chamber on Sunday, August 11th, is a big deal for Star Trek fans. Bakula rarely talks about Star Trek after he exited the franchise following Enterprise 's cancelation. Bakula did reunite with his Enterprise cast mates for a roundtable discussion accompanying Star Trek: Enterprise 's Blu-ray release, and Scott also joined William Shatner for his 2011 documentary, The Captains . Bakula usually skips Star Trek conventions, and it's been about a decade or more since Scott joined his fellow Enterprise actors to discuss their shared Star Trek experience and memories. However, Bakula joined his fellow Star Trek luminaries to accept the Peabody Award for the Star Trek franchise in 2024, which perhaps set the stage for his D-Con Chamber guest spot.

It's thrilling that Scott will join Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating to reminisce about Enterprise on The D-Con Chamber.

After Star Trek: Enterprise ended, Scott Bakula's career continued to great heights. Scott was already renowned as the star of NBC's Quantum Leap , portraying time-traveling hero Sam Beckett, before Bakula signed on to become Captain Jonathan Archer of the NX-01 Enterprise. Post- Star Trek , Bakula appeared in numerous TV series, films, and stage productions, including l ead roles in Men of a Certain Age and NCIS: New Orleans. While Bakula has moved on from Star Trek , he remains indelibly connected to the final frontier as Captain Archer, and it's thrilling that Scott will join Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating to reminisce about Enterprise on The D-Con Chamber.

The D-Con Chamber Is The New & Improved Shuttlepod Show

Scott bakula's episode is the d-con chamber's season 1 finale.

The D-Con Chamber is the next generation of the podcast that was formerly known as The Shuttlepod Show . In 2022, Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating launched The Shuttlepod Show, produced by Mark Cartier, as a successful vehicle to discuss not just Star Trek but the lives and careers of their fellow Star Trek actors. With Trinner's probing questions and Keating as the irrepressible raconteur, The Shuttlepod Show hosted huge Star Trek names like Jonathan Frakes, Michael Dorn, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Gates McFadden, and LeVar Burton in its two seasons. Keating and Trinneer then exited The Shuttlepod Show in late 2023 and early 2024, revamping their podcast into a new incarnation.

Now produced by 455 Films, The D-Con Chamber (a fusion of Dominic and Connor's names as well as a nod to the NX-01 Enterprise's infamously sexy decontamination room ) continues with a new look and energy, but Trinneer and Keating's podcast still delves deeply into the lives and careers of its guests. The D-Con Chamber premiered with the biggest name in Star Trek - William Shatner - and its guests have included Star Trek: Discovery 's Sonequa Martin-Green, David Ajala, and Mary Chieffo, and Star Trek: Picard 's Michelle Hurd, Ed Speleers, Peyton List, and showrunner Terry Matalas. Scott Bakula's guest spot marks the season 1 finale of The D-Con Chamber , and his long-awaited Star Trek: Enterprise reunion with Dominic Keating and Connor Trinneer will, no doubt, be one for the record books.

Moskva-Class Cruisers

Separate design teams often attempt to meet a set of ship specifications with completely different, although equally valid, strategies. To fulfill the requirements issued in April 2169 for the successor (NX-223) to the Daedalus class, which was introduced at the end of the Romulan War, Prosser & Ankopitch proposed a ship with an extremely large, spherical command hull attached to a nearly vestigial engineering hull. The proposal from the Mikoyan-Tupolev-Dassault Bureau used a long narrow command hull with a minimal frontal silhouette counterbalanced by an equally long engineering hull.

The engineers at Tezuka-Republic decided that the division of ship's functions between a command/crew hull and an engineering hull was arbitrary and unnecessarily restricted design options. Therefore, rather than gathering all the specified facilities in a single hull, their design TR-223A spread them across two hulls, as in Daedalus , and segregated the SSWR-IV-C warp core to a "bustle" at the extreme aft end of the secondary hull. This bustle could be separated easily and quickly from the rest of the engineering hull in the event of a warp core breach. The now-unpowered warp nacelles would then be shed. In this way, the demands of safety would be met without warp dynamics being degraded either by an excessively large frontal silhouette or by longitudinal warp field imbalance.

Although the Ship Specifications Review Board praised Tezuka-Republic for its creative solution to the problem of admittedly contradictory requirements for extreme safety and improved warp performance, they were forced to disqualify design TR-223A for not precisely meeting contract specifications. Therefore, in October 2171, construction contract NX-223 for Starfleet's new cruiser was awarded to Prosser & Ankopitch for what would become the Wasp class .

However, almost no one was happy with the new Wasp ships. Even before the contract was awarded, voices within Starfleet and within industry had strongly criticized the specifications of April 2169. These critics charged that they would lead to a mediocre, albeit safe, fighting ship. Two separate classes were needed, not a single class that was neither a proper explorer nor a proper warship. When Wasp was finally launched in 2173, her performance during precommisioning trials clearly showed that the critics had been correct. Although the performance problems were related in part to the continuing unavailability of the more powerful Tezuka-Republic Hiryu ("Flying Dragon") mark III warp nacelles, Wasp was obviously not the ship Starfleet had hoped for.

In a second attempt to obtain a reliable and capable warship, new specifications (NX-374) were issued in September 2175, little more than a year after USS  Wasp had entered service. Adding to this sense of urgency were intelligence reports suggesting that the Romulans had either developed or otherwise acquired matter/antimatter (M/AM) reactors. This time the specifications put less emphasis upon safety. The original requirement for completely separate command and engineering hulls was eliminated; instead, any hull configuration was allowed as long as the warp core could be quickly separated from the rest of the ship. Furthermore, requirements for speed, acceleration, and maneuverability both under impulse power and under warp power were increased, as were performance levels for target acquisition, tracking, and servicing.

These new specifications were a clear, albeit belated, admission that the critics had been correct all along: one class could not be expected to serve as both an explorer and a main battleship. In fact, starship technology was not considered sufficiently mature for a single ship to adequately fulfill both mission profiles until 2245, when the Constitution -class heavy cruiser was launched. (The controversy continues even today in the wake of the problems of the Galaxy -class explorer.)

Luckily, the designers and engineers at Tezuka-Republic had not been idle since their disappointing loss of the Wasp contract in 2171. Instead, they had spent their time refining design TR-223A so that their new entry (TR-374A) was markedly superior to what had been submitted 5 years earlier. In particular, the new SSWR-V warp reactor allowed the bustle to be made smaller, lighter, and even more easily separable. Therefore, it was hardly surprising when in November 2176 Tezuka-Republic was awarded the production contract over designs from Shimata-Dominquez, Prosser & Ankopitch, Mikoyan-Tupolev Dassault, Monarch R&U, and Thornycroft/Ebisu for what was to become the Moskva class.

However, engineering prowess may not have been the only factor in Tezuka-Republic's winning of the contract. There were accusations that the delay in delivery of the Hiryu warp engines was an attempt by Tezuka-Republic to prevent Wasp from reaching her designed performance levels. While no conclusive incriminating evidence has come to light, the delivery of the long-awaited engines shortly before the scheduled launch of Moskva in December 2177 is certainly suspicious. Tezuka-Republic maintains that if their submission of 2169 had been selected, its performance would also have not have met design specifications without the Hiryu engines. However, critics charge that TR-223A was not as reliant as Wasp on the type of engine used. Furthermore, once the Wasp contract was awarded, and even after Wasp was launched, Tezuka-Republic certainly made no efforts to accelerate delivery of Hiryu.

These controversies were soon rendered moot as the new Moskva class was recognized as a significant advance in starship design. The most important new feature was Moskva's discoid primary hull. Earlier designs had chosen a spherical primary hull for reasons of economy. Simple geometric relationships dictate that a spherical hull has the smallest surface area for a given volume. Therefore, construction costs are lower and shields are more efficient. Furthermore, institutional inertia had led nearly all exploratory cruisers originating until that time from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the United States Astronautics Agency, the United Earth Space Probe Agency, and its successor organizations to have spherical hulls.

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

The designers of USS  Moskva employed a biconvex disc for several reasons. Their initial motive was to increase hull volume while minimizing both frontal and lateral silhouettes. A warship with large frontal and lateral silhouettes would be at a greater disadvantage in most tactical situations than would be a ship with an increased superior silhouette. However, the discoid hull allowed the traditional radial layout of command hulls to be retained.

More important than these tactical advantages were functional advantages. As was shown with the Wasp class, warp field geometry would have been awkward if a spherical hull with its relatively large frontal area had been used. The discoid hull was also found to channel warp field flow across its upper surface towards the bussard ram scoops of the warp nacelles. This channeling effect improved field efficiency at all power levels and speeds. As the understanding of warp field mechanics was refined, the trend towards saucer-shaped primary hulls would be intensified in later Starfleet vessels.

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

In most respects, the Moskva class continued design and engineering trends established in the Comet and Daedalus classes introduced at the end of the Romulan War. As in these classes, ship functions were clearly divided between a command/crew hull and an engineering/propulsion hull. The bridge was returned to its customary position atop the command hull and the shuttlecraft bay was again placed in the secondary hull. The fusion reactor was centered along the longitudinal axis of the ship, and impulse thrust ports exited immediately in front of the warp bustle detachment seam.

Weaponry was the then-standard mix of fusion-warhead missiles and lasers. New to this class was an early type of ultraphased pulse laser cannon, two of which were mounted in the chin of the primary hull. Although the on-target energy output of this new weapon approached that of early phasers, its power requirement was higher and its range was substantially less. However, subsequent refinements lead to steady improvement and, ultimately, to the development of true phasers in 2202. Although Moskva -class ships were the first to be fitted with phasers in 2204, lasers were still carried by the Moskva class and later classes until the 2220s. Finally, warp capability was supplied by the long-awaited Hiryu mark III drive units.

The first ship of the new class, USS  Moskva (NCC-374), entered service with Starfleet in April 2179. An additional 30 ships (NCC-375 to NCC-404) joined the fleet through 2183. Moskva -class ships gained immediate popularity with officers and crews. First, total laser firepower was increased some 75% over that in the preceding Wasp class. Second, because the ship's mass was more equally distributed along the longitudinal axis than in the Wasp class, Moskva was significantly more maneuverable at both sublight and warp speeds. Finally, the more warp-dynamic design allowed greater cruising and maximum speeds.

The Moskva class had an outstanding safety record. No ships were lost because of mechanical failures. However, an incident occurred aboard USS  Johannesburg in 2186 when a faulty nacelle flow monitor falsely indicated a runaway positive feedback power loop within the plasma flow governor. Believing that a catastrophic warp core explosion was imminent, Chief Engineer Roberta Bocharnikov ordered the warp nacelles and warp bustle to be separated. Although unnecessary, these maneuvers were successful in causing the separated warp core to initiate its automatic shut-down routine. The warp core, nacelles, and the rest of the ship were towed to Starbase 13, where they were successfully re-mated. Despite her supreme embarrassment, Bocharnikov oversaw the reassembly and relaunching of Johannesburg and retained her position as chief engineer.

Although most ships of the Moskva class had left front-line service by 2215, some continued to serve as auxiliaries and training vessels until the 2240s. After retirement from active duty, Moskva -class ships were used as testbeds for many emerging technologies owing to the similarities of their layouts to those of succeeding classes. USS  Moskva was the site of the first successful ship-to-surface transport of a Human being in 2206, and USS  Gato was the first ship to fire photon torpedoes in 2214. In addition, Taurus -class tugs, which entered service in 2182, and Sanford -class repair tenders, which entered service in 2185, were derived from the Moskva class and used the same primary hull and warp drive assembly.

The Moskva -class cruiser USS  Aurora (NCC-377), a participant of the Battle of Eohippus IV, is on display at the Starfleet Museum.

During Comic-Con 2024, Paramount+ released a teaser trailer for the upcoming fifth and final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks , which arrives on October 24, with a 2-episode premiere. There was also a panel discussion featuring showrunner Mike McMahan along with Jack Quaid (Boimler), Tawny Newsome (Mariner), Noël Wells (Tendi), and Jerry O’Connell (Ransom). We have taken a deep dive look at the trailer for an analysis of what to expect in season 5, using what was revealed at Comic-Con to add key context.

One last adventure… but don’t look for closure

Earlier this year Parmount+ announced season 5 would be the last for Lower Decks  on the streaming service. The teaser trailer leaned into this by starting with an homage to the teaser trailer for Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country . Just as that trailer looked back at the adventures of the TOS crew, this new trailer highlights moments from the first four seasons of  Lower Decks with the message “…now you are invited to join them for one last adventure.”

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

All this nice reflection stops with a freeze frame of the USS Cerritos and things get a bit meta with Mariner’s voice interjecting, “Woah, was he talking about us?” adding “Yeah right, we aren’t done voyaging.”

During the SDCC panel, showrunner Mike McMahan revealed that he and his team made the season with the end in mind:

We have something really special coming for you. We got a heads up that this was probably going to be our final season on Paramount+ with enough time to make sure that it really was worth doing. Not only are the episodes hilarious and real Star Trek, the whole time, but there’s some amazing legacy guest stars that come in… I promise you’re going to love it when you see it on air.

However, when a fan asked if season 5 would end like the recent fifth and final season of  Discovery by providing “closure,” he emphatically said “no,” adding:

You’re going to get a closure that feels like the end of a chapter but you’re not getting a closure on the Cerritos or these characters.

Space potholes and an alt-universe Cerritos

According to the official season 5 synopsis The U.S.S. Cerritos has been tasked with “closing space potholes,” as these subspace rifts are “causing chaos in the Alpha Quadrant.” After the opening montage of past seasons, we see the Cerritos approaching one of these subspace rifts.

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

Mariner isn’t impressed, saying, “Man, another quantum fissure? This is like the third one this month. Boo, interdimensional portal.”

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

However, her attitude begins to change when another USS Cerritos emerges and they are hailed by a familiar, but different crew.

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

Changes that can be seen on the alternate crew are the Shaxs has a ponytail, Boimler has a Riker beard, Rutherford has a lot more cybernetic components… and Mariner is in command, saying: “What up Cerritos? This is Captain Becky Freeman.”

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

It does appear that the two crews end up working together as there is a brief shot later of the two Rutherfords hugging, with the alt Rutherford using an extra robotic arm.

Orions at war

The official synopsis said one of the many things the Cerritos crew will deal with in season 5 is an “Orion war.” Season 4 ended with Tendi being recalled back to her home planet. During the SDCC panel Noël Wells teased what we can expect for Tendi this season:

She’s on Orion with her sister. We get to see her on her home planet and what that means for her. There’s going to be blue Orions, from [ Star Trek: The Animated Series ] meeting with green Orions. Also, Tendi will be back at Starfleet at some point.

The trailer gives us a glimpse of some of this Orion-focused story with Tendi and her sister flying a ship and getting into some action.

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

Later in the trailer, there is more Tendi Orion action.

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

Klingon as hell

The synopsis also teases “furious Klingons” and the trailer ends with Mariner and Boimler in a Klingon bar with Mariner definitely getting some Klingons angry. It appears she is reuniting with Ma’ah whom she befriended in the season 4 finale . However, this incited a female Klingon, deriding Ma’ah for “fraternizing with Starfleet humans.”

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

Mariner’s response, “What crawled up her boob window” only incited more anger from Ma’ah.

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

There were more Klingon moments in the trailer including Mariner and Boimler participating in “the Rite of Unending Pain,” and only Boimler seemed to be excited, saying “This is going to be Klingon as hell!”

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

This rite appears to be similar to the Klingon “ Right of Ascension ” Worf endured on TNG.

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

This includes Boimler and Mariner being zapped with Klingon painstiks .

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

No money, no problems?

One more bit from the official synopsis teased “diplomatic catastrophes” and there does appear to be a unique away mission with a visit to what Boimler describes as a “post-scarcity society throwing out all their jewels and crap.”

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

So it appears that season 5 is going to take on Star Trek’s utopian vision of a society without money, and perhaps the inherent contradictions that arise.

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

Domed mission

The official season synopsis did describe “murder mysteries,” which may be seen in a visit to space station with domed environments. Casually dressed Ransom and Billups invite Boimler to join them on what Jack mischievously calls “an undercover mission.”

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

Later the trio can be seen freaking out, and in a river.

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

Mariner (armed with a phaser rifle) and Jennifer also get into some trouble under the dome as they get launched out of a hover car…

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

Alien undercover

Speaking of going undercover, Dr. T’Ana does some classic cosmetic alterations on Tendi, turning her into a different kind of alien.

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

She, T’Lyn, and Mariner appear to be visiting an idyllic pre-warp society.

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

Back to Enterprise ?

Lower Decks is known for making connections to Trek canon, but being in the 24th century has proven to be a limiting factor for McMahan who has said before he has struggled with how he can incorporate Star Trek: Enterprise , which was set in the 22nd century. Last year the executive producer teased he may have cracked the code and we got a hint of that in the new trailer with a shot of what looks like the infamous decon chamber on the NX-01 Enterprise, with Freeman, Tendi, Mariner, Jack, Ransom, and Rutherford in their undies. Rubbing on decontamination gel , Jack says, “Oh yeah, that’s the stuff.”

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

More random stuff

The trailer started with the Paramount logo, but in the Lower Decks style, which is actually a callback to the season four episode “ Parth Ferengi’s Heart Place ” when we first saw this logo in Boimler’s hotel room on Ferenginar.

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

There are a few moments from the new teaser without any context…

Boimler failing to ski

star trek enterprise nx 01 model

Boimler and Rutherford enjoying tropical beverages.

Mariner annoying the gang with her music.

The senior officers go hands in.

A top 5 season!

This is all just the tip of the animated iceberg. During the SDCC panel, Tawny Newsome and Mike McMahan summarized what fans can expect:

Tawny Newsome: Mike and our writers have crammed so many amazing easter eggs and loving references and then just like straight-up jokes and beautiful storylines that stand on their own. It’s a top tier season. In my top five of Lower Decks for sure. Mike McMahan: I think every season is the best season we’ve ever done. But this season is the best we’ve ever done… This is our final season on Paramount Plus… but because we knew it, this season is a celebration of all things Lower Decks and all things Star Trek, so love it.

Tawny also offered this insight into what’s new for Mariner:

Tawny Newsome: Mariner has grown. She’s showing growth. She’s in her growth era. She’s not self-sabotaging anymore. She is a little more mature. She’s still chaotic. She still calls out bullshit, but now she’s got like other ensigns that answer to her. So remember, like when you were a bratty teen and you were giving your parents hell and then maybe some of you grew up and now you have bratty teens giving you hell and you’re like, “How dare you?” I remember this feeling. That’s what’s going on with her.

Jack Quaid offered an intriguing hint that Boimler will get to meet one of his heroes:

Jack Quaid: [Boimler] really took a lot of inspiration from that moment where he finally got to be in the captain’s chair [in season 4]. I got to be acting captain, which was so exciting for a little Boims, very proud of him. Not to spoil too much but earlier in [season 5] he meets someone who he very much wants to be a lot more like and he makes it his mission this season to kind of do everything that this guy does. And that leads to some straight up grade-A hijinks… no, it’s not Kirk. It’s kind of vague, because the surprise is cool.

As for Ransom, Jerry O’Connell said things get a bit serious:

Jerry O’Connell: For Ransom, I will say like a lot of the characters up here, he has a growth season. He grows and not just in his pecs. He grows emotionally. It was very emotional, it was an emotional ride for me this season. I got a little teary eyed. I think people are going to really enjoy it.

He said ‘we’re ending on Paramount Plus’ a couple times…….what does that mean?

I know there’s been efforts to get another streamer to pick it up.

Lower Descks season 5 is at the top of my list of what is coming next (The Adolf Section 31 generic Syfy movie is at the dead bottom).

But this looks awesome! An Orion war is not something I think I needed but I do now. And happy to see both Jen and Ma’ah back. Maybe Mariner and Jen will work out their issues.

Also can’t wait to meet the alt Cerritos crew. It would be cool if they were from the Kelvin Universe actually. And please please please give us some Enterprise and NX-01 this season!!!! That would be (in Tendi voice) fantastic!!! Or (in T’Lyn voice) fascinating.

This show continues to rock! 😎🖖

OMG yed, please give us an Enterprise crossover!! I know he’s been saying he wants to do it and the D con chamber is a fun clue but I won’t get my hopes up until we see T’Pol or Archer on screen.

And it seems weird not to show them since we saw DS9 at the end of the third season trailer. But maybe McMahan just wants to surprise us.

I would also love a Kelvin universe connection too but since this takes place a few years before Romulus is taken out by the supernova it would go against canon. That said I guess technically it wouldn’t completely if there was contact between both universes first. And if it’s the Kelvin universe in the 24th century then Spock and Nero already crossed over in their universe a hundred years ago from their perspective even if it hasn’t happened yet in ours.

But this is why time travel gives Janeway a headache. 😉

I’m just hoping we get a live-action segment with Jack Quaid meeting Scott Bakula. Astronomical odds, but honestly, seeing Archer in animation is fun but not really all that meaningful to me.

I hear you but as you said that’s probably not going to happen.

I’m thinking that Paramount has told McMahan he’ll eventually be allowed to shop the show around…maybe several months after the finale has streamed or once the Skydance deal closes.

Here’s hoping

It would not bother me at all if the franchise simply does 5 seasons then shops the shows around. Get more seasons on Amazon or Netflix, while clearing room in Paramount’s budget for a new series. Maybe not every show gets additional years on another platform, but I could see LDS getting one or two more for sure.

I think this is possible also. McMahan clearly sees the show going several more seasons and many fans want it to continue as well. It would be great if Netflix or even Amazon to at least have the option to pick it up. And those sites clearly want more Star Trek.

To me LDS can probably go another 2-3 more seasons easily.

Kurtzman did say last year there were more surprises, so perhaps one of those will be a Lower Decks film. I think this cast deserves a “big screen” adventure.

“What crawled up her boob window and died?” makes me howl everytime I watch the trailer.

There’s going to be blue Orions, from [ Star Trek: The Animated Series ] meeting with green Orions.

Well…., my favorite is Red Onions, and then Yellow & White Onions, however I am partial to Green Onions, But I’m not to sure about these Blue Onions…, they sound like they are sad…, Onions. : )

they sound like they are sad…, Onions. : )

This made my day… :)

As has become tradition for me, I will rewatch all of Lower Decks before the new season starts. I just love the characters, their chemistry, and the humor so much.

Lol I do that too!!

I thought it was just me. But the seasons feel so short and the episodes are so fun it’s fun to watch it from the beginning. And I haven’t rewatch season 4 at all since it aired.

Can’t wait for the episode where USS Cerrito meets alternate USS Cerrito.

Boob window. Tee hee.

Those costumes never made sense. Also, did anyone ever find the Klingon cleavage alluring?

I hope that the blue Orions are called Or-ee-ons.
