15 Best Things to Do in Evansville (IN)

Southern Indiana ’s largest city is on an oxbow in the Ohio River, looking across the water to Kentucky.

Home to three NYSE companies, Evansville is a regional center for commerce, manufacturing and higher education, but also culture, with important performing arts venues and museums.

Downtown Evansville resonates with history, keeping many of its early 20th century buildings, and this is fringed by the refined Riverside District as well as Bally’s Evansville, Indiana’s first casino.

Evansville’s also has several reminders of its massive contribution to the United States’ war effort, most memorably a giant WWII-era tank landing ship that is usually docked on the riverfront.

1. Downtown Evansville

You can tell that a lot of love has gone into Evansville’s central commercial district in the last couple of decades.

Today this is a leafy, pedestrian friendly area, flush with culture, entertainment, dining choices and not to mention gorgeous old architecture in a spectrum of styles.

A veteran entertainment anchor is the Victory Theatre, opened in 1921 and the home of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra.

A big chunk of the attractions on this list are downtown, complemented by a smattering of stores you won’t find anywhere else and independent restaurants for all palates.

Be sure to wander south to appreciate the fine architecture in the Riverside Historic District, mostly built in the second half of the 19th century.

The riverfront area west of downtown is now fronted by modern hotels and casinos, with waterfront parks where you can watch the sunset or the famous fireworks on July 4.

2. Evansville Museum of Arts, History and Science

Where downtown Evansville meets the Ohio river bank is one of Indiana’s most storied cultural institutions.

Since it was founded in 1904 this museum has amassed a collection of more than 30,000 objects, dealing with a variety of subjects including fine arts, decorative arts, history, anthropology and natural history.

Among the many highlights there’s European and American painting from the 16th to the 20th centuries, an interactive recreation of a 19th-century rivertown and the Humankind Gallery, shedding light on indigenous cultures in Asia, Africa and South America.

The spectacular Koch Immersive Theater has a 40-foot dome and 10,000-watt digital sound system, while also on the museum campus is the Evansville Transportation Center, exhibiting the history of transportation in Southern Indiana, with impressive railroad artifacts.

3. USS LST Ship Memorial

During World War II industrial production went into overdrive in Evansville, especially on the riverfront a piece of which became a 45-acre shipyard building humongous tank landing ships (LSTs).

Vital to the war effort, these amphibious vessels delivered tanks, trucks, jeeps and troops directly onto beaches during invasions.

It makes sense that today Evansville should be the home port for the only operational LST, still in WWII configuration to be afloat in US waters, and this ship participated in the landings at Sicily and Normandy.

This is on the riverside, conveniently connected to downtown Evansville by the Pigeon Creek Greenway Passage, offering six tours a day when it’s docked in the city.

4. Angel Mounds State Historic Site

By the Ohio River to the southeast of Evansville is the site of a Middle Mississippian town that peaked from 1000 to 1450 C.E..

There was a large permanent community here sustained by the cultivation and storage of corn, leaving behind 12 earthen mounds once topped by ceremonial buildings.

The site was excavated in the mid-20th century by Indiana archeologist Glenn Albert Black (1900-1964), who unearthed more than 2.5 million artifacts here.

His research is the basis for the displays at the engrossing interpretive center, and you can also see reconstructions of Mississippian buildings on the site.

Elsewhere are 500 acres of open land without an archeological purpose, and containing a nature preserve, walking/biking trails and an 18-hole disc golf course.

5. Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden

This zoo on Evansville’s northwest side is open 365 days a year, and has been around since 1928. Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden was one of the first zoological attractions in the country to use moats as a boundary for enclosures, rather than cages.

There are animals from some 200 species here, and perhaps the headline exhibit is Amazonia.

Opened in 2008, this living indoor rainforest habitat has Amazonian species like jaguars, capybaras, squirrel monkeys, black howler monkeys and Cuvier’s dwarf caimans.

At other exhibits you’ll come across zebras, giraffes, lemurs, clouded leopards, Mexican gray wolves and red pandas. The grounds are dotted with charming gardens, and every February Amazonia hosts Orchid Escape, when the jungle environment is abloom with colorful orchids.

6. Bosse Field

Of all the ballparks still in regular use in the United States, this stadium in Evansville is surpassed in age only by Fenway Park and Wrigley Field.

Opened in 1915, Bosse Field was the country’s first municipally owned sports stadium and is named for the mayor at the time, Benjamin Bosse (1875-1922).

Over the last 100+ years, the stadium has been home field for more than a dozen professional times, and since 1995 the main tenant has been the Evansville Otters, who play in the Midwestern Conference of the Frontier League.

This stately old ballpark was used as a location for A League for their Own (1992), and a game here is a must for any baseball purist.

7. Children’s Museum of Evansville

For children up to the age of 12, this interactive museum is housed in one of the most elegant buildings downtown.

The venue is Evansville’s Art Deco former public library, constructed in 1931, and the Children’s Museum opened in 2006.

The museum is made up of a series of open-ended, experiential zones, like Live Well, promoting healthy diet choices, and Work Smart, with stations helping to develop children’s curiosity for mechanics and engineering.

Quack Factory is home to Moe, the museum’s signature, climbable 20-foot duck, while Fantastic Plastic is a peek at Evansville’s plastics industry, combined with a section on recycling.

8. Evansville African American Museum

A little way east of downtown is an important museum dedicated to the history and traditions of African American families, traditions and organizations in the city.

The location is fascinating too, in the last surviving building of Lincoln Gardens, the second housing project established under FDR’s New Deal in 1938.

Inside you can see what it was like to live in the project in the 1930s, in a preserved section of an original apartment, while the remainder of the building is a modern museum.

You can learn the story of the surrounding Baptist town, a thriving black community, and discover key figures and milestones over the last century in Evansville. There are also worthwhile traveling temporary exhibits and shows for local artists.

9. Reitz Home Museum

Awaiting you in the Riverside Historic District is a stunning French Second Empire-style residence built in 1871 for the “Lumber Baron” John Augustus Reitz (1815-1891).

The house has been given a superb restoration, and as well as original period furniture the interiors feature hand-painted ceiling frescoes, molded plaster friezes, patterned parquet floors and silk damask walls.

The Reitz Home was left to a Catholic organization in the 1930s, later becoming the home of Evansville’s bishop, before being donated to a preservation society in 1974.

Tours have taken place ever since, and the house is considered one of the best preserved examples of a Victorian residence in the country.

10. Willard Library

A grand sight to keep in mind downtown is the oldest operating library in Indiana. The palatial building, opened in 1885, is in the Gothic Revival style, with contrasting red brick, white stone and terra cotta.

The library is an independent private institution, and its benefactor Willard Carpenter aimed to “improve the moral and intellectual culture of the inhabitants of Evansville”, making the library free of charge and accessible to all races, classes and sexes forever.

The Willard Library is noted for its extensive genealogy and local history collections, found on the second floor, and it is believed to be haunted by a “Lady in Grey”.

11. Evansville Wartime Museum

We’ve seen that Evansville was a major center for manufacturing during World War II, with several existing factories switching production to weapons, munitions and vehicles.

As well as warships, the city became a center for the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft, rolling out 6,242 P-47s, almost half of the total made nationally during the war.

The factory was set next to the Evansville Regional Airport, and today there’s a museum in a hangar here remembering the city’s astonishing industrial output during the conflict.

The highlight at the Evansville Wartime Museum has to be Tarheel Hal, a genuine P-47 built just a short walk away, along with machinery used in the factory.

12. Burdette Park

This rolling, wooded park by the USI campus was founded in the 1920s, and was developed during the Great Depression by public works programs like the Work Progress Administration (WPA).

In the early 1960s Burdette Park’s aquatic center opened to the public, and this is still one of the largest outdoor pool complexes in the Midwest.

Just the place to cool off in summer, the Aquatic Center has an Olympic sized pool, a family pool with two slides, a children’s pool and a spray park. Burdette Park also has several day shelters that can be rented, as well as fully furnished chalets for overnight stays.

13. Pigeon Creek Greenway Passage

Meeting the Ohio River in Evansville, Pigeon Creek was the southern terminus of the Wabash and Erie Canal, a key link in a shipping route that connected the Great Lakes with New Orleans.

On the banks of the creek and a scenic stretch of the broad Ohio River is a ten-foot wide paved trail for bicycling, walking and jogging.

The Pigeon Creek Greenway Passage connects parks, nature areas, neighborhoods, business districts and visitor attractions like the USS LST Ship Memorial and Evansville Museum.

When we wrote this article the passage was just under seven miles long, but is expected to be part of a 42-mile system of trails encircling the entire city.

14. Ford Center

This impressive arena is impossible to miss in downtown Evansville, and was constructed as part of the downtown’s revitalization in the early 2010s.

A cutting-edge sweep of metal and glass, the Ford Center also has a base of Indiana limestone, which helps to ground it among the historic buildings downtown.

Replacing the old Roberts Municipal Stadium, the arena is a venue for concerts, conventions and WWE events, but also the home of the University of Evansville Purple Aces basketball team (NCAA Division I) and the professional Evansville Thunderbolts of the SPHL.

A few performers from the last few years include Blake Shelton, Kid Rock, Disturbed and George Strait.

15. West Side Nut Club Fall Festival

For a week in October some 200,000 people head to Franklin Street on Evansville’s West Side for one of the largest street festivals in the United States.

The West Side Nut Club Fall Festival has a history going back to 1921, and grew dramatically in the post war years, with ever larger carnival rides and famous entertainers.

Starting on a Sunday and lasting the rest of the week, the festival features more than 130 food booths, talent competitions, tons of free live entertainment, carnival attractions, all culminating with a massive parade on Saturday.

Fried food is dominant here, and if you’re feeling adventurous this is a chance to try the traditional local specialty, fried brain sandwiches.

It’s been serving the city since the 1950’s so it s a bit of a loved favorite here. Located in the historic downtown district It’s easy to find and close to other attractions. 

This museum shows really well how art, science, and history all work together and there is so much to see here so book out a whole day.  

They have displays that show how art imitates life and they have a historical walk showcasing the old Rivertown.

There are permanent and traveling exhibitions and make sure you visit the Koch Immersive Theater for an out-of-this-world movie experience.

Wonder Around The Hartman Arboretum

On the private property of Grant and Jean Hartman is the Hartman Arboretum. Design and planting began in 2001; today, this place is a little oasis. 

There are three main gardens, a wildlife garden, the hydrangea garden, and a memorial garden, You will also find a blueberry patch, a fall color grove, and other delights. 

The Arboretum has about 500 trees of all varieties, including 18 types of Oaks. It’s such a beautiful well-maintained garden and the space is an absolutely lovely place to spend some time.

Read A Book At The Willard Carpenter House

On the National Register of Historic Places The Willard Carpenter House once served as an underground railroad station.

The owner, Willard Carpenter was committed to African Americans welcoming runaway slaves into his home through a tunnel from the river. 

It’s also Indiana’s oldest repository of books, magazines, newspapers, and other materials.

Opened in 1885  Willard Carpenter insisted that it, “be maintained for the free use of all persons who may desire to consult it.” 

It’s a sanctuary for book lovers and scholars alike with researchers and academics regularly using its resources.

Escape To The Wesselman Woods Nature Center

If you looking for a little escape then how about the Wesselman Woods Nature Center. 

It’s a beautiful space of fauna and floral and a perfect escape. 

With a dedicated nature playscape and child-friendly trails, it’s a great place to take the children to stretch their legs. 

The woods provide an environmental education with an emphasis on conservation, education, and research, and equal access to nature.

The woods are also home to Howell Wetlands which is one of Indiana’s biggest urban wetlands.

Reitz Home Museum

Visiting the 1871 home of former lumber baron and philanthropist John Augustus Reitz, and his wife Gertrude is one of the things to do in Indiana if you love architecture. 

Constructed in the style of Second French Empire architecture it’s a beautiful building with wood, stained glass, and authentic furniture.

It’s believed this building is one of the best examples of this period in the USA. 

Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 this house is well worth a visit.

Tours are an hour long and take in all 12 rooms of the building. It is a thing to do in Evansville that will take your breath away.

Old Evansville Courthouse

The Old Vanderburgh County Courthouse as it is also known is considered by architectural historians to be one of the most important examples of 19th-century governmental architecture.

Designed by Henry Wolters of Louisville it epitomizes Beaux-Arts architecture. It was built with local Indian limestone and features marble floors, slate stairs, wrought iron, and a soaring 216-foot bell tower. 

There is currently a campaign to save the clock tower which has a Back To The Future feel about it.

9. Children’s Museum of Evansville

8. Willard Library

First opened in 1855, Willard Library is the oldest operating library in the state of Indiana and one of the only libraries with a charter specifying that it is to be open and remain free to all races and genders.

If not for the books, then a visit to admire the building, its history, and its classic architecture is just as recommended. Just 148 years later, and the Evansville Museum is full of an interesting and eclectic collection of anthropological and natural history artifacts, historic documents, photographs, and fine art that live and breathe Evansville’s history. The museum also boasts an immersive planetarium theater for visitors to enjoy with regular events rotating every month.

3. Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Gardens

This zoo first opened its doors to visitors in 1928 and quickly became a pioneer in its field as the first zoo in Indiana and the first in the country to introduce the use of a moat system: displaying animals in exhibits which resemble their native habitats. Today, a visit to Mesker Park Zoo offers an exciting educational adventure with encounters with over 700 animals representing 186 species from around the globe.

The zoo is organized into 10 exhibits each representing a different part of the world. For rainforest lovers, head over to Amazonia with living plants and more than 150 animals including jaguars, bats, monkeys, Arrau turtles, and capybaras. Future visitors should keep an eye out for the penguin exhibit opening soon.

2. Angel Mounds State Historic Site

Built between AD 1000 and 1450, the Angel Mounds Historic Site was once occupied by a community of approximately 1,000 Native Americans.

Today, the site welcomes visitors to immerse themselves in the roots of modern archaeology in the state of Indiana and explore recreations of important Mississippian structures. Gaze upon twelve earthen mounds as you learn about their traditional use for burials of important tribal members, before taking part in interactive activities such as reconstructing a broken clay pot.

Visitors are also welcome to discover the site following hiking trails through the nature reserve or alternatively get around slightly faster by bicycle. Finish your day by enjoying the site’s 18-hole disk golf course overlooking the banks of the Ohio River for some added fun.

1. USS LST-325

Out of the 1,051 Landing Ship Tanks (LST) built, more than a thousand survived to the end of World War II, but only one welcomes visitors for tours all year round: the LST-325.

Famously dubbed by Winston Churchill as “The Ship That Won the War”, a visit to the last fully operational WWII LST in her home port of Evansville is a rare opportunity to learn about American history and experience wartime history as it happened. Guided tours are available and last approximately 60 minutes, including a visit to the main desk, sleeping quarters, tank desk, and viewing of photo collections.

A floating World War Two museum and memorial ship, the LST-325 is worth an immersive and reflective visit.

Additionally, the vibrant growth of the University of Southern Indiana (established in 1965) has resulted in a strong youth presence and an active and enjoyable nightlife.

The broad economic base of the region has helped to build an economy which is known for its stability, diversity, and vitality. In 2004 Evansville was named an "All-America City" by the National Civic League. In 2008 it was voted the best city in the country in which "to live, work, and play" by the readers of Kiplinger, and in 2009 the 11th best.

Paleo Indians left the Angel Mounds in the area as evidence of their distant civilization, and French explorers performed obeisance in calling the area La Belle Rivière.

Settled in 1812, the city sits on a gentle horseshoe bend on the Ohio River and is often referred to as "River City." One of the most popular attractions in the region is Bally's Evansville (formerly Tropicana and Casino Aztar, the first riverboat casino in the state of Indiana). Evansville is also home to the University of Evansville and to the University of Southern Indiana.

There is no passenger train service to this city.

US Highway 41 bisects Evansville. Interstate 69 (formerly I-164) connects Evansville with Interstate 64, 20 miles to the north. Interstate 69 will eventually provide a direct link to Bloomington and Indianapolis.

Downtown Evansville can be reached via bus lines transiting the classic 1938-era Greyhound bus terminal.

Highway 41 and Interstate 69 (formerly I-164) are the primary North-South routes, while Diamond Avenue and the Lloyd Expressway are the primary east-west routes through the city. Only the Lloyd Expressway takes you completely from one side of town to the other and despite its name, has numerous intersections and stoplights.

• Evansville is a safe town with very few areas that are unsafe even at night. The southern areas of the town are seen as the most rough but are just low-income residential.

Evansville is a Choice Destination, so named by Discover Wisconsin, the nation’s longest running television tourism program. What makes Evansville special? This friendly community has a rich history evident in its architecture, entrepreneurial spirit, arts, recreation and natural beauty. 

Historic 

The Wisconsin Historical Society has stated that Evansville is home to “the finest collection of 1840s to 1915 architecture of any small town in Wisconsin.” More than 300 properties are listed as historic places, and a good share of them are in a highly walkable 5-block district. A key feature is Main Street, lined with reclaimed brick pavers. Several retail buildings facing Main Street have intricate, carved details. Continue on Main Street into the residential district to see stately Queen Anne, Gothic Revival, Prairie School, Bungalow and other styles of homes. Free guidebooks are available and have descriptions and maps for easy, self-guided walking tours.

Evansville has a thriving arts culture. Anchoring one end of the historic downtown district is Allen Creek Gallery, a regionally renowned art gallery representing award-winning pottery, plus textiles, paintings, garden sculptures and other fine art. Plus, more than 80 barn quilts—the popular folk art phenomenon—are concentrated in and around Evansville. A handy pamphlet has maps and a list of the local barn quilts. 

Natural Beauty

Evansville’s most well-known park is Leonard-Leota Park, listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its 1930s-era designed landscape. Established in 1883 and later expanded, the park’s significant landmark is the 28-acre stream-fed Lake Leota, a popular place for birders, anglers, kayakers and more. Other park amenities include a popular 9-hole disc golf course, an outdoor public swimming pool, picnic areas, playgrounds, huge trees, and a photogenic covered bridge that straddles a stream. Near Evansville are Magnolia Bluff and Gibbs Lake, both county parks with scenic views, picnic and wildlife areas, and trails for hiking, cross-country skiing and horseback riding. Gibbs Lake also has a boat landing. 

Another beautiful place, known for its geologically significant terrain, is the Evansville Golf Club, one of the finest public golf courses in southern Wisconsin. The 18-hole, par 72 golf course has a driving range, pro shop and restaurant. 

Shopping, Dining and Places to Stay

The shopping experience in Evansville is enticing. Boutique shops offer vintage and new home furnishings, décor, art, antiques, handcrafted gift items, clothing and even pet-friendly cookies. Friendly, locally owned restaurants satisfy a variety of appetites, whether it is a sandwich for a picnic lunch, or a Friday fish fry, or a family-style dinner.  

Overnight guests are welcome at the local Boarders Inn & Suites , which is conveniently located right off Highway 14 on the east end of Evansville.

Groups are welcome at the crafters’ retreat center, The Grove Retreat , where you will find a creativity room perfect for quilting, scrapbooking and other projects requiring tables and good lighting.

Evansville tourism officials hope three minutes lead to a lifetime of love for the city

EVANSVILLE — Alexis Berggren has a little formula to open people's eyes to the sheer scope and importance of what will happen in Evansville on April 8.

The total solar eclipse — a celestial event that won't be repeated here until long after this generation is dead and buried — is projected to bring 80,000 people to the area for the weekend leading into April 8, a Monday. It's an influx of humanity comparable to the World War II population boom, when the city became a center of wartime manufacturing.

It's Evansville's big chance, Berggren said.

"Tourism is really the beginning of the economic development cycle," said Berggren, president and CEO of Explore Evansville . "When you get a person to visit an area, if they enjoy the area they’ll want to return. And if they return, they might relocate. And if they relocate, they might invest — and if they invest, then they attract more visitors."

Berggren noted studies that show about two-thirds of travelers prefer to visit a place before relocating there. Explore Evansville's projection of 80,000 visitors includes many who likely will be visiting friends and relatives — and many who might not otherwise have ever come to Southwestern Indiana.

Warrick, Posey and Gibson counties, and Henderson County, Kentucky will see some visitors, Berggren said, but "the bulk of those folks are going to be staying in Evansville, eating in Evansville, shopping in Evansville, over those three or four days."

There won't likely be a lot of northerners among them. All told, nearly 500 cities in the U.S. are located on the eclipse's path of totality. Given that Indianapolis is among them, Explore Evansville's marketing has been aimed at parts of Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama and Georgia that are in reasonable driving distance.

Capitalizing: The long view and the short view

Explore Evansville has led the community outreach arm of the city's eclipse preparations for more than a year. Part of that outreach is counseling local businesses on the importance of not only engaging with guests and visitors, but staying in contact with them they leave with an eye toward luring them back.

That can mean requiring email addresses for RSVPs or ticket purchases, or it can be even more elementary than that.

"If they don’t have systems in place like a lot of retailers do in terms of, you know — before you even hand them your credit card, they’re asking for your phone number or your email address," Berggren said. "If (businesses) don’t have those kinds of systems in place, we’ll help them set up QR codes. We can help them set up even simple email forms to capture email (addresses)."

But those are relationships that can take years to build and to pay off. The short view is Explore Evansville's projection that visitors will spend at least $7.7 million on lodging, transportation, retail, recreation and food and beverages in Vanderburgh County alone in the runup to the total solar eclipse.

And that number is "really conservative," Berggren said. She pointed to the experience of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, in 2017.

Evansville was only on the fringes of the "path of totality" traced across the Earth by the moon's shadow as it crossed the sun on Aug. 21, 2017. That year's total solar eclipse was the first such celestial event to hit North America in 38 years.

The Evansville area wasn't in position to see a total eclipse, which happens when the moon completely blocks the sun from the sky. Local residents still bought shareable, reusable and inexpensive protective glasses in numbers that forced convenience stores, sporting goods stores and other suppliers to scramble to meet demand.

And they flocked along with people from other states and nations to Hopkinsville, dubbed the ideal place to watch. As the moon made its trek across the country, it would be closest to the Earth when it passed Hopkinsville. It was the darkest point along the path of totality.

Brigette Jones, director of the Hancock County (Kentucky) Tourism & Visitors Center, recently pegged the 2017 eclipse's economic impact to Christian County, home to Hopkinsville, at $28.6 million.

Jones made no bones about the opportunity that attracting so many visitors represents to a community.

"People have to eat your food and stay in your hotels," she told the Daily Reporter . "They’ll want to buy things and get the T-shirt, and will be looking for something to do. If you own a restaurant or a business or farmland, this is your opportunity to cash in on that."

'It takes that perfect alignment'

Evansville is directly in the narrow Texas-to-Maine path of the total solar eclipse. The sun gradually will be eclipsed by the moon, bringing total darkness for  slightly more than three minutes at 2:02 p.m. in Evansville and six seconds later in Henderson, Kentucky. Henderson is expected to have about two minutes and 30 seconds of totality.

Because Evansville was on the fringes of the path of totality in 2017, Gary Barr said, many area residents may not appreciate how rare and majestic is the event coming on April 8.

There will be partial eclipses in the decades to come and total eclipses elsewhere on Earth, said Barr, an Evansville-based solar system ambassador for NASA and frequent host of eclipse explainer events. But the next total eclipse in the Evansville area won't happen until Oct. 17, 2153.

"People say, 'Oh, I’ll just wait another five years, and it’ll happen again,'" Barr said. "No, it will be past your lifetime before the next one happens in our area.

"It takes that perfect alignment of the moon and the earth and the rotation of the earth to put that mark right over Evansville again."

Planning for all the economic, traffic-related and community outreach implications of such a staggering event is the work of committees that began meeting more than a year ago.

That's how important it is that Evansville get this right, Alexis Berggren said.

The city has received national attention before and can be expected to gain more from the eclipse experience, Berggren said.

"But if this goes well, I think we’re going to gain some really positive sentiment across the region, across the country," she said. "It will only play to our favor as we try to attract more people to the community."
