Winter is here and we’re dreaming of sunny skies. Here are our top picks for places where it’s always warm all year round

A travel adventure always feels better when it’s balmy. Yet during the winter months, when travelers are most in need of sunshine, it can be difficult to find guaranteed warm places to visit.

So where is it warm all year round? We’ve compiled a list of 10 warm places to travel, from adventurous locations ideal for solo and group tour travel to relaxing destinations perfect for beach lovers. 

Koh Lanta, Thailand

Choose your own adventure on Koh Lanta. This tropical paradise offers a diversity of activities—and average highs of 87F (31C) all year round. 

Bike along the luscious coast for unforgettable views, scuba in the breathtaking marine national park, and explore the stilted restaurants of Ban Si Raya, the island’s original port. If you love to party, head to Hat Khlong Khong—the island’s hippie beach—when the sun goes down. Koh Lanta can also be enjoyed as part of a Thai island-hopping tour .

Koh Lanta’s climate is warm throughout the year, but the rainy season hits hard from July to October. Visit from December to March for a vacation that is both warm and dry.

Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Discover sun, sea and black sand beaches set against the extraordinary volcanic landscape of Lanzarote. This Canary Island is breathtaking to behold, with its luminous Montañas del Fuego (Mountains of Fire) and lava fields drawing comparisons to martian terrain.

There are plenty of opportunities to delve into the city’s rich history and culture, with major attractions including the Saadian Tombs, Le Jardin Secret, Badia Palace and the ultra-chic Yves Saint Laurent Museum. Marrakesh is also the perfect base from which to explore more of Morocco .

In July and August, Marrakech sizzles under average highs of 98F (37C), while the coolest month is January, with the mercury rising to a comfortable 66F (19C).

Bali, Indonesia

Discover a slice of paradise under the swaying coconut palms of Bali, which is a perennial favorite on any warm places to visit list. This vacation hotspot boasts undeniably chilled out vibes, and serves adventure travelers and sunseekers in equal measure. 

Surfing, scuba and rafting are some of the most popular activities on Bali, thanks to its pristine coastline. Keen hikers find their path among the thickly-tangled tropical vegetation and waterfalls in-land, while wellness enthusiasts indulge in yoga and spas. Bali is hard to beat when it comes to beaches. There’s the famous Kuta beach, surrounded by party spots, luxurious Nusa Dua, and Padang Padang beach, favored by bohemian types. 

The temperature on Bali remains balmy year-round, hovering between 68F (20C) and 89F (32C). However, the island does have a distinct wet and dry season, with May to October generally the best time to visit.

Mirissa, Sri Lanka

Mirissa is perfect for adventurers seeking a laid-back beach holiday off the beaten track. 

Modest guesthouses, bars and restaurants line a powdery crescent beach, with the warm tide lapping the feet of diners. At low tide, a sandbar emerges from the water, laying the trail to a small island. Surfing, snorkeling and whale watching are also on offer.

Mirissa is best enjoyed as part of a larger Sri Lankan adventure, with the historic fort of Galle an hour’s drive away, and surfer’s paradise Matara just 30 minutes along the coast road. Leave the south coast behind to visit the world-famous city of Kandy and take an iconic train ride through tea country to the wellness haven of Ella .

Temperatures in Mirissa fluctuate just a couple of degrees throughout the year, with highs between 84F (29C) and 89F (32C). Frequent rainfall is to be expected from May to November, but these showers typically pass quickly. 

Tourists have flocked to the former Portuguese enclave of Goa for decades to enjoy its vast golden beaches, famous party scene, and mesmerizing sunsets. 

Lounge on one of the island’s luxurious beaches or head to more secluded sands, where refreshments are available from palm leaf shacks. Shopping is a true cultural experience in Goa —there’s the famous tourist bazaar Anjuna Flea market, as well as the newer Saturday Night Market at Arpora, which becomes a hopping nightlife spot as the sun sets. Don’t miss Aswem, a painfully cool spot on the north Goan coast that regularly attracts A-listers to its upscale resorts and clubs among the sand dunes.

Hot weather is guaranteed in Goa, with average temperatures fluctuating from 77F (25C) in January to 86F (30C) in May. Monsoon season typically lasts from June to September, however, which can thwart beach days.

Sal, Cabo Verde

The golden sands of the well-developed Santa Maria Beach are a favored tourist hotspot in Sal, while Ponta Preta Beach offers more rugged scenery, and windsurfers flock to Kite Beach. As the sun sets over Santa Maria, live music, traditional dancing and cocktail bars are to be expected. 

There’s a unique experience to be had at Pedra de Lume—the site of a former salt mine in the crater of an extinct volcano—where the saltwater is believed to have therapeutic properties. Meanwhile, divers flock to Buracona, or ‘The Blue Eye’, where they plunge into a cave filled with blue water brilliantly lit by the sun. It’s also possible to use Sal as a jumping off point to explore Cabo Verde’s other islands .

Sal is one of those rare destinations that is great to visit at any time of year thanks to its dry tropical climate. The mercury rises to an average daily high of 87F (31C) in August, while in February—the coldest month—temperatures peak at an average 77F (25C).

Aruba , Caribbean

Year-round sunshine is just one of the benefits of spending a vacation in this Caribbean haven. Miles of white sand beaches are complemented by incredible wildlife-spotting opportunities and outstanding hikes. The adventure is topped off by Oranjestad—the quaint, colorful capital. 

Nature lovers should not miss the island’s donkey sanctuary, butterfly farm and ostrich farm. Meanwhile, the island’s second highest peak, Hooiberg, is a 587-stair challenge for hikers. Popular beaches include Eagle Beach, Palm Beach and Baby Beach—and Andicuri Beach is a true surfer’s paradise, with limestone cliffs and crashing waves. 

Average highs remain above 86F (30C) throughout the year, and Caribbean hurricanes rarely make landfall on the island.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio de Janeiro is a sprawling, magical city containing a multitude of adventures.

Take a cable car up to the iconic Sugarloaf Mountain for panoramic views over the city, and pay a visit to the giant Christ the Redeemer statue. Embrace nature at the Parque Nacional da Tijuca to see what’s left of the Atlantic rainforest that once surrounded Rio.

Elsewhere, the central neighborhood of Lapa is famed for its nightlife. Its plethora of bars vibrate with samba music, and there’s a huge, loud street party every weekend.

Rio’s hottest months occur from December to March, with average highs hovering around 86F (30C). June to August bring cooler weather, but it’s certainly not chilly—average highs for this time of year sit at around 77F (25C).

Welcome to the gleaming desert-metropolis of Dubai . This ambitious city draws in a wide range of tourists, from luxury lovers in search of seven-star service and sparkling malls, to sporty types looking for their next adrenaline rush on Kite Beach.

Take in the Burj Khalifa and the Burj Al Arab—two of Dubai’s most stunning architectural structures. Soak up the culture at the dazzling gold souk and at Madinat Jumeirah, a modern interpretation of a traditional Arab village.

From June to September, Dubai is scorching, with average highs around 105F (41C), while January is the coolest month, with average highs of 75F (24C).

Travelers face two reasonable responses to the prospect of a long, cold winter: embrace the chill and seek out the most spectacular winter destinations , or follow the warmth – wherever you can find it.

If you’ve had your fill of icy sidewalks and overheated buildings, no one will blame you for choosing option two. And  US travelers don’t even need to leave the country to ditch the scarves and mittens.

Whether you’re after a beach escape, a wildlife adventure or a dose of big-city culture, here’s where to find fun in the sun this winter.

Santa Barbara, California

Just under two hours northwest of Los Angeles , Santa Barbara is a getaway destination perfect for beach strolls and canyon hikes. Celebrity sightings are common here (Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Jennifer Lopez and Oprah Winfrey are among the area’s most notable residents), yet the real attraction is its upscale yet relaxed beach-town energy. Stroll the State St Promenade for unique shops, artisan food and wine stores, plus plenty of outdoor dining options. Follow it all the way to West Beach , where the more adventurous can rent kayaks and stand-up paddleboards and those just out for a great view can stroll Stearns Wharf . 

Phoenix, Arizona

There’s a simple reason 15 Major League Baseball teams relocate to Arizona for training before the real season starts: the weather is simply phenomenal, with  Phoenix getting 299 days of sunshine every year on average. In the middle of summer, when temperatures regularly shoot past 100°F, you might wish for some relief – but the clear-blue-sky, mid-70s days of late winter are ideal for outdoor fun.

If you’re not there for the baseball, you can at least see why it’s called the “Cactus League” at the Desert Botanical Garden , where the succulents and spiny plants of the desert mingle with art exhibitions. Or hit the trail and explore the sandstone formations of Papago Park, or pedal through South Mountain Park, a favorite among trail riders.

The Everglades, Florida

Maybe those baseball teams are onto something: while half of the league is in Arizona, the rest are warming up in Florida . The Sunshine State has the warmest temperatures on the US mainland during the winter, and the warmest national park  (outside of Hawaii ) is the Everglades . Winter is the dry season here, making it one of the most popular times of year for visitors – as well as for spotting wildlife. The drying of the marshes makes animals congregate in smaller areas, and migratory birds are doing just what you’re doing: flying to Florida in search of warmer climes. Drive the Southern Everglades Hwy south until you run out of continent at Flamingo , a great place for spotting manatees.

South Padre Island, Texas

Get to South Padre Island before spring break and you can enjoy  Texas ’ popular seaside resort town at its quietest. With multiple blinds, a viewing tower, and boardwalks through the dunes, the 50-acre South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary  is an ideal spot for watching feathered friends who overwinter here, as well as alligators and sea turtles. Isla Blanca County Park ’s beach is the most popular, thanks to access to shops and restaurants – but you can be rewarded with a bit of tranquility by exploring the dunes of Edwin King Atwood County Park or the long stretches of sand of the North End .

Key West, Florida

At the furthest end of the Florida Keys , Key West  has a celebrated culture that attracts sun seekers from all over the USA. The 7-sq-mile oasis offers famed literary history, fresh seafood and plenty of hopping bars. Don’t pass up the chance to set sail during sunset, visit the Ernest Hemingway House and marvel at the many colors at the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory . 

Palm Springs, California

Palm Springs has its own type of cool going on year-round – but it’s rarely the type that registers on the thermometer. Winter nights can have a bit of the dry cold of the desert, yet the average high temperature never dips below 70°F. Palm Springs as a winter oasis is hardly a well-kept secret, and though it’s high season around the Coachella Valley, the variety of old-school motor court motels and mid-century-modern rentals for private pool parties means there are always accommodations options. For those craving a bit more activity than poolside lounging, breathtaking  Joshua Tree National Park and the oddball charm of the Salton Sea (with sights like the International Banana Museum ) are less than an hour away.

St John, US Virgin Islands

Looking for warm weather and the feeling that you’re a long, long way from home? St John  in the US Virgin Islands  might fit the bill. Virgin Islands National Park covers two-thirds of the island, preserving many miles of shoreline as well as underwater reef habitats. Traveling with kids? Try Maho Bay , known for its shallow, calm waters popular among snorkelers and green sea turtles.

New Orleans, Louisiana

Winter in New Orleans isn’t exactly hot and sunny – January and February average in the mid-60s – but it’s certainly a welcome change from anywhere snowbound, and the crowds are at their lowest just before Mardi Gras swings into town. But since this New Orleans, there’s always a party going on, even in winter.

Bonfires are lit along the levees every Christmas Eve, a tradition that is supposed to help guide the arrival of Papa Noël, the Cajun Santa Claus. The annual Tet Fest thrown by the Mary Queen of Vietnam Church to celebrate the Vietnamese New Year (in late January or early February) is an important day for New Orleans’ large Vietnamese population, and the festive fair is full of delicious eats for all comers. The mild days of winter also make for pleasant exploring of the backstreets on one of the Crescent City’s many bike tours.

Kihei, Maui

The Hawaiian Islands do get more rain in winter, and things do get a bit cooler, it’s true. But let’s be real: the “cooler” winter in Kihei  means an average high of 81°F instead of 87°F, with 276 days of sun a year. So a parka won’t be necessary. There are a few simple tips for visiting  Maui  in winter. Stick to the south and west coasts to maximize your chances of sunny days. Avoid stronger surf by heading to gentler beaches, like Kalepolepo Beach Park for kids or Ulua Beach for top-notch snorkeling. Skip the holiday crowds and seek out a deal in early winter, before spring break. Then sit back, and soak in the sun.

Coastal Georgia

Sun-seekers heading to Georgia  could do just fine by stopping in sensational  Savannah and never leaving. But head just a little further out to the coast and you’ll find a world of barrier islands and twisting waterways to explore. Tybee Island and its popular beaches are just a half-hour drive away – the start of a string of subtropical islands that hug the coast of the Peach State. All feature mild winter weather, and each has its own personality.

Sapelo Island is home to a small village of Geechee, descendants of Africans who were enslaved on the plantations on the island until the 19th century. Nature lovers can book wildlife tours of Sapelo’s estuaries through the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve Visitors Center . Historic, multicultural Brunswick serves as the gateway to Georgia’s Golden Isles, including resorty St Simons, and Jekyll Island, historically a playground for the wealthiest American families.

It’s time to escape the cold and enjoy some nice weather. If you’re dreaming of sunshine and high’s in the 60’s, 70’s or even 80’s, well here you go!

As someone who’s actively checking places off my travel bucket list , I can’t say I’ve been everywhere (yet!) So I recruited some of my fellow travel blogging friends to help create this huge list.

Each destination includes average temperatures you can expect for the area. These temps are what’s normal for January – in the heart of winter when most of us are trying to escape the cold!

Warm winter vacations USA

Starting this list off with a few favorites…but let’s be honest, they’re all fantastic! From beaches to deserts…here we go!

1. San Diego, California

Average temp:  high 66 / low 50

Starting this list off with a bang! San Diego is a delight to visit any time of year, but it’s definitely one of the top warm winter vacations in the USA. With temperatures averaging in the mid-60’s all winter long, it’s a perfect escape from cold weather.

Whether you’re planning a weekend in San Diego or a longer vacation, there’s plenty of things to do to occupy your time. While the ocean temperature is too cold for most people to enjoy it, watching the waves and enjoying the salty air is the perfect activity.

If you’re into Mexican food and culture, be sure to check out Old Town San Diego , which is the birthplace of California. With over a dozen delicious spots to eat, you could literally eat for dayyyyys here. So good!

For a more bougie atmosphere, head on over to La Jolla Cove for an afternoon. Grab dinner and gelato with amazing views of the coast. Downtown San Diego boasts the Gaslamp Quarter, perfect for restaurants and nightlife.

History lovers will enjoy the USS Midway and art fanatics should check out Balboa Park. Of course, beaches are plentiful so be sure to enjoy Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach and Coronado Beach.

2. Sedona, Arizona

Average temp:  high 60 / low 34

With high temperatures hovering at a comfortable 60 degrees in Sedona, it’s one of the best warm winter vacations in the US! The crowds have gone, prices are more affordable and the deep red rock scenes are just as cool.

Sedona is perfect for couples! At night you may want to cozy up by the fire, which many resorts and restaurants have running just for you. During the day, hit the trails! Just make sure to pack your hiking shoes with traction , incase you find any slippery spots on the slick rock surface.

Try the popular Devil’s Bridge or Cathedral Rock for excellent hikes with a good amount of challenge, both worth the views! Or take it easy at Fay Canyon Trail or Seven Sacred Pools.

Perhaps one of the coolest things to do in Sedona is stargaze at night. With the stark backdrop of the nearby cliffs, it’s a perfect spot for it!

3. Puerto Rico

Average temp:  high 84 / low 66

Few destinations within the United States are warmer in the winter than the island territory of Puerto Rico. The island is pleasant all throughout the winter, but January and February tend to have the most consistently pleasant weather, with average highs around 80 degrees and lows around 75 degrees.

Plus, the Atlantic hurricane season has passed by winter, so it’s really the perfect time to visit Puerto Rico. Just be aware that these months also coincide with high season, so it’s best to reserve your hotels well in advance.

Most visitors to Puerto Rico enter through the capital city of San Juan. If you’re just visiting for a shorter getaway, the easiest thing to do is to base yourself out of the historic Old San Juan . Explore the old Spanish fortress, meander the cobblestone streets, and enjoy the many boutique hotels , shops and restaurants.

You can get just about anywhere in Puerto Rico from San Juan, so it’s the perfect base for day trips around the island . Chase waterfalls in El Yunque National Rainforest, the only tropical rainforest in the United States.

Go surfing at La Pared Beach in Luquillo. Visit Culebra and the stunning Flamenco Beach . Take a day trip to Icacos Island from Fajardo. Or go night kayaking in one of Puerto Rico’s bioluminescent bays, or visit the Black Sand Beach in Vieques !

4. St. Croix, USVI (one of the most beautiful places to visit in winter in USA)

Average temp:  high 82 / low 71

A true Caribbean getaway, and yet one of the best warm winter vacations USA is St. Croix. Because it’s a US territory, you won’t need a passport if you’re a US citizen. It makes getting there quite convenient.

A lush, tropical island part of the US Virgin Islands (St. John and St. Thomas are the others you can visit), it’s a picturesque getaway when you’re craving sunshine during the dreary winter.

Visiting St. Croix, you’ll likely spend some time in the town of Christiansted. Hang out on the Boardwalk, marvel at the Danish architecture and grab a bite to eat with an ocean view.

With over 20 gorgeous beaches in St. Croix, you’re sure to have some beach fun, too. Visit the famous Rainbow Beach or the less crowded beaches at Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge.

Go snorkeling, stand up paddleboarding, kayaking or take a day trip to Buck Island. There’s so many things to do in St. Croix, you certainly won’t get bored!

5. Miami, Florida

If you’re looking for the best warm winter destinations in the USA, you have to add Miami to your list. Located in southeastern Florida, this city is blessed with warm weather and sunshine all year round.

In winter temperatures average around 68°F (ranging from the lowest at 60°F and highest at 73°C) and there are as little as 6 rainfall days per month. It’s the perfect warm getaway for the cold December, January and February months.

Miami is ideal also because it has loads to offer. You can spend your days on the beach if you choose to, but there are also lots of exciting things to do in the city. From street art tours to visiting interesting museums… in Miami there is something for everyone.

Discovering the street art of Wynwood is without a doubt one of the highlights in Miami. You can do a guided cycling tour, so as to see as much as possible of the neighbourhood, while learning about the street art from local art fans.

Exploring Little Havana, and learning about the Cuban influence and history in Miami is also an extremely interesting activity.

If you want to try some delicious food you can also head to Espanola Way. Here you will find a lovely pedestrian street, with a distinctive Spanish vibe; with flamenco dancers and cute restaurants offering tasty paella and tapas.

Regardless of whether you’re planning to spend a month or  weekend in Miami , or whether you plan to relax on the beach or discover the history of this unique city, Miami is the perfect warm getaway for this winter.

6. Orange Beach, Alabama (a favorite on this list of warm winter vacations USA)

Average temp:  high 63 / low 42

White sand beaches in Alabama? Yessss please! This area of the USA is often underrated, which makes it the perfect spot for a warm winter vacation. With less crowds than it’s popular Gulf Coast beach counterparts, Orange Beach is great for families, couples, solos or friends’ trips.

Pristine, white sand and temperatures in the upper 50’s and lower 60’s, it’s great for relaxing on the beach. While the water may be a bit too cool to swim, you’ll be able to soak up some rays and enjoy the salty air of the Gulf.

Make sure to check out The Wharf at Orange Beach where you’ll find tons of shopping, dining and nightlife. If you’re feeling active, the biking and hiking trails at Gulf State Park is the perfect spot for you. And before you leave, you’ll want to check out the Gulf State Park Pier, too.

Orange Beach, Alabama offers spots to stay right on the beach for the best views or find budget-friendly accommodations a little further inland.

7. Las Vegas, Nevada

Average temp:  high 59 / low 28

Las Vegas deserves a spot on everyone’s bucket list of places to visit . Picture a getaway filled with gambling, shopping, eating, drinking and seeing the world (or at least, miniature replicas of the world’s landmarks).

Sin City is a verified inferno during summer months, and your visit is bound to be much more comfortable in the milder winter. Traveling to Vegas in January or February ensures you enjoy moderate hotel rates and temperatures in the mid 60s. But make sure to pack a light jacket for when the desert nights cool off! 

Vegas is the ultimate destination for people-watching, and in balmy February weather, you can secure an outdoor table along the Strip to see what all of the city’s locals and visitors are up to. The patios at El Segundo Sol or Lavo at the Palazzo are two excellent options for prime people-watching and delicious eats.

If you’re looking for the best places to visit in winter in USA, look no further than New Orleans! First, let’s talk weather! If you visit NOLA in summer, you are stuck with scorching heat.

Now, you want a warm destination, but you don’t want to be too hot! That is why visiting New Orleans in winter is the perfect time to go. Temperatures range from 60-70’s which is a great temperature for exploring outdoors, visiting historic places and dining on balconies. 

While there is no bad time to visit in winter, January and February are both great months for different reasons! January is Joan of Arc’s birthday and there is a parade each year and Epiphany also falls in January which marks the start of Mardi Gras! 

If you choose February, you will be visiting during Black History month. In a city with lots of Black history, what could be a better time to visit and enjoy some of the Black-owned restaurants the city has to offer.

11. American Samoa

American Samoa is one of the most underrated destinations on this list, and rarely traveled to by US citizens because of it’s remote location. But when you arrive, oh goodness it’s worth every second!

To get to American Samoa in the South Pacific, you’ll need to travel to Hawaii first, with flights operating only twice weekly to the islands of American Samoa. It’s about a 6 hour flight from Honolulu to Pago Pago, American Samoa.

With a warm, humid climate, you can expect to see some rainfall which creates the beautiful greenery on the lush, tropical island. January is the most rainy, so for a warm winter getaway I’d recommend November or late February for more sunshine if you’re looking for that during a warm winter vacations USA.

Be sure to visit the  National Park of American Samoa , which is most certainly an island paradise. Protecting the local nature and ancestry of the Samoa, you’ll learn about the local culture and species that call this paradise home. Ofu Beach is a highlight within the park, so don’t skip it!

Swim in the tide pools at Poloa, take a day trip to Aunu’u, or for the most incredible beaches and scenery, head to Manu’a from the mainland of American Samoa.

If you’re planning a trip to Orlando during the winter and planning to visit the theme parks, try to avoid holiday weekends and school holidays as the lines get long with everyone wanting to enjoy the nicer weather.

One of the best parts of visiting Orlando in the winter is visiting in December and experiencing all of the amazing things to do in Orlando at Christmas . While the theme parks decorate and have lots of amazing events, you can also find free community events featuring Santa, outdoor ice skating rinks, lots of Christmas lights and even “snow”.

13. Mustang Island, Texas (one of the most underrated places to visit in winter in USA)

Located near Corpus Christi is the beautiful Mustang Island. Commercial tourism hasn’t completely taken over the island, leaving more sand and surf to enjoy. In fact, Mustang Island is one of the most underrated spots on this list of warm winter vacations (USA).

Texas beaches are known for their adventure. Driving on a beach here is welcome – and encouraged! Drive up and down the coast to find a perfect picnic spot for the day.

The best place to stay on Mustang Island is Lively Beach . It’s close enough to take a day trip to the Padre Island National Seashore, where you’ll find 60+ miles of beaches to drive and roam on.

Or to the north is Port Aransas, or ‘Port A’ as the locals call it. Check out restaurants and shopping in the quaint downtown area, or the pier for the best views of the coast!

It’s the furthest south in the continental USA and it’s a perfect destination to solve any wintertime blues! Visiting Key West is a fun stop whether you’re planning cruise featuring Key West, a Miami to Key West road trip or a stay at just this island!

Key West has a bit of a reputation for being a party island…and truth be told, it is! There’s a ton of shopping, restaurants and bars. The island isn’t very heavy on beaches, although Smathers Beach is worth a visit.

And of course, tasting the famous key lime pie while you’re on the island. No judgement if you try it at all the restaurants, either…you’re on vacation!

As someone who’s traveled to Hawaii many times, I can tell you with certainty that it’s one of the top winter vacations in the USA. With less crowds than peak summer season, Oahu is home to beautiful sunshine, gorgeous weather and the Pacific Ocean warm enough to swim in.

If you’re up for delicious restaurants and fun nightlife, stay in the popular Waikiki Beach area of Honolulu. If you crave nature and the outdoors to explore, the North Shore sounds right for you.

From visiting icons like Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head, to beaching and Oahu hikes you’ll love , you’ll be saying Aloha to the warm weather Hawaii offers all winter long.

Pro tip: if it’s your first time to Hawaii, I recommend island-hopping to see more! Split your time between multiple islands to see what the others have to offer.

17. Tucson, Arizona

Heading to Tucson, Arizona is one of the best places to visit in winter in USA. It’s fantastic to visit in January or February as it is not a very crowded place and the weather is perfect – warm enough to wear jeans and a shirt or light jacket. 

There are a ton of cool things to do in Tucson, with the highlight being a visit to Saguaro National Park. This is a perfect place to hang out in the wintertime as it has over 30 different hiking trails through the Saguaro cacti. You can easily spend a day or two just exploring the park. 

Other awesome things to do in Tucson include the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, the Pima Air and Space Museum and the Franklin Auto Museum. Wine lovers will love visiting one of the tasting rooms like Sand-Reckoner or heading to Willcox for wineries. 

Food-wise, Agustin Kitchen is one of the best restaurants in Tucson for dinner. Seis Kitchen or Nook are delicious breakfast stops. Also, make sure to pop into La Estrella Bakery for the best pan dulce. 

I recommend staying at Hotel Congress as it’s in a fantastic location and has adorable rooms. You can also stay by the airport to save money. No matter what, there is a ton of fun things to keep you busy in Tucson.

18. Charleston, South Carolina

A great southern escape in the dreary winter is no further than Charleston, South Carolina. It’s common to see 60’s in February, which is a dream for most of the USA!

During the winter in Charleston, one of the best things to do is visit the  Magnolia Plantation and Gardens . It’s the oldest public gardens in the USA, and has won awards over and over. It’s truly stunning, and a great spot to visit, even in wintertime.

Shop, dine and find entertainment in the historic downtown district. King Street is a main stretch where you’ll find beautiful architecture and even better food. 

Of course you can’t visit Charleston in winter without seeing the beach. Although temperatures will be too cold for swimming, it’s still warm enough to enjoy the sights and sounds of the waves. Walk the beach looking for sea shells , or if you’re traveling with young kids, bring sand toys and let them build castles.

19. Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles, California is easily one of the best winter getaways in the U.S. You can enjoy average temperatures of 68-70 degrees and above from the months of January, February, and March. During the winter months in Los Angeles, you will also experience fewer crowds! 

Because of exceptionally warm winter temperatures, this makes Los Angeles the perfect destination to enjoy hiking and beach-going in California. 

Some of the best things to add to your Los Angeles itinerary in the winter include taking a bike ride down the Venice Boardwalk, enjoying a swim at Venice Beach, exploring the Santa Monica Pier, seeing the stars at Hollywood Blvd and taking the famous hike to the Hollywood Sign.  

Other popular hikes to enjoy in Los Angles are at Runyon Canyon and around Griffith Observatory. Griffith Observatory also offers the perfect place to experience the sunset over Downtown Los Angeles and star gazing.

Furthermore, the months of February and March in LA are also when many award shows are happening including the Grammy Awards and Golden Globe Awards. So if you love award season or want to try to have a glimpse of the stars, the winter months in LA are for you!

20. Siesta Key, Florida (one of the top places to visit in winter in USA)

Siesta Key is a strip of land just west of Sarasota, Florida. You won’t find high rise hotels here, instead smaller, family-run hotels, condos and vacation rentals .

Rated one of the top beaches in the USA, Siesta Key, Florida is a gorgeous beach any time of year. December, January and February are exceptionally special because it’s still warm and you’ll get plenty of vitamin D with Florida’s sunshine!

Visit Siesta Key Village for the most shopping and dining options. Ride the free trolley to the many gorgeous beaches and restaurants around the strip. Or get your adrenaline pumping with kiteboarding or parasailing!

Aside from beach activities, some of the top things to do in Siesta Key are devouring Meaney’s Mini Donuts, biking the island or kayaking through mangrove tunnels .

Visit Siesta Key Florida for a weekend or week-long getaway during winter. You’ll be glad you did!

21. Channel Islands National Park, California

One of my favorites on this list of warm winter vacations USA is also one of the most underrated vacation destinations ! The National Park Service refers to Channel Islands NP as “Close to the California Mainland…Yet Worlds Apart.” And it’s so true!

It’s one of America’s least visited National Parks, likely because it requires a ferry ride from the mainland. However the 5 uninhabited islands of Santa Cruz, Anacapa, San Miguel, Santa Barbara and Santa Rosa more than make up for the travel there!

You can opt to ride the ferry back and forth for as many days as you’d like, or you can opt to camp on the islands. Just be sure to book your campsite in advance. Spend your days hiking and kayaking (book a tour in advance), and otherwise enjoying the views.

Pro tip: come prepared. There’s no services on the island for food, trash, etc. Potable water is available at the campsites.

I’d recommend a hotel in Ventura , as it’s the closest to the ferry. With high’s in the 60’s during winter, this is definitely one of the best warm winter getaways in the USA! Visiting the Channel Islands National park could be part of a larger California Coast road trip , or an off-the-grid national park adventure!

22. South Padre Island, Texas

South Padre Island is a popular getaway and one of the best places to go during winter, especially for people who live in the southern part of the US. Situated on the coastal tip of Texas in the Gulf of Mexico, it’s the only tropical island in all of Texas. 

While spring break is an especially busy time to visit South Padre, December is a popular month for those wanting to get away to someplace warm for Christmas break. Many of the hotels fill up, so you’ll want to book accommodations in advance for your vacation there.

While the rest of the country may be experiencing winter weather, South Padre averages a balmy 71℉ and just over an inch of rain for December.

The ocean might be too chilly for some people to enjoy, but there’s still plenty to do there. For starters, be sure to check out the results of the annual sandcastle building contest that are kept for viewing year-round. 

Sea Turtle, Inc. is one of the top attractions where visitors can see them up close and learn more about what’s being done to protect them. South Padre is also a bird watcher’s paradise with a 5-story watchtower at the Birding and Nature Center where you’ll likely see many of the migrating birds to the area.

Winter is also a great time to book a tour out on the water to see the dolphins or take a sunset dinner cruise. South Padre Island is a warm-weather vacation destination that has attractions for just about everyone!

23. Kauai, Hawaii (an absolute favorite on this list of best places to visit in winter, USA)

The most lush and impeccably beautiful of the Hawaiian islands (and my personal favorite), Kauai is a perfect retreat from cold weather. Home to the NaPali Coast and Waimea Canyon, this island is meant to be explored! Its stunning scenery is unparalleled by any other spot in the USA, with its lush greenery and gorgeous beaches.

If you’re looking to relax on the beach – choose another destination on this list. But if you’re up for adventure, try hiking first 2 miles of the the Kalalau Trail , viewing waterfalls up close and personal inside the Waimea Canyon or visiting one of the best snorkeling spots on Kauai .

By far one of my favorite experiences in Kauai was seeing it from the air. Taking a scenic flight through the Waimea Canyon and NaPali Coast is a truly unforgettable experience!

Of course there’s plenty of time for rest, too. Hang out at the palm-tree lined beach at Poipu and watch the sunset. Or see some of the best Kauai beaches on the North Shore.

24. St. John, US Virgin Islands

We’re taking tropical to a whole other level here! St John is the smallest of the 3 major US Virgin Islands, and an absolutely perfect warm winter getaway. The island is covered by over 60% national park and the rest is gorgeous beaches, hiking trails and just a few businesses.

Expect temperatures in the upper 70’s for your stay in the US Virgin Islands over the winter.

Visit the Virgin Islands National Park and check out the ancient petroglyphs and epic hiking trails. Get another look into the island’s past by visiting the Annaberg Sugar Plantation Ruins. And when it’s time for a drink, check out the local brewery – St. John Brewers.

With gorgeous weather, be sure to visit the beautiful Trunk Bay for its pristine beach and turquoise ocean. If you’re up for some snorkeling, check out Watermelon Cay, Maho Bay and Salt Pond.

It can be a little tricky getting to St. John, but it’s sooo worth it! You’ll want to fly into St. Thomas, USVI. From there, you’ll need to take a taxi from the airport to a ferry. The ferries depart every hour, and it’s about a 20 minute ride over to St. John.

Because St. John has been really beat up in recent years with hurricanes, there’s not very many places to stay until rebuilding is complete. For that reason, accommodations tend to be pricey and they book up fast. So book your hotel early!

25. Huntington Beach, California

There’s nothing better than escaping cold, snowy weather for a balmy beach vacation during the winter. Thankfully, Southern California has plenty of beaches that fit the bill – including Huntington Beach!  

Huntington Beach is nicknamed “Surf City USA” because it hosts the largest surfing competition in the world, the Vans US Open of Surfing, each summer.

That said, winter is a great time to visit Huntington Beach – the weather is still warm, with temperatures averaging in the mid-60s, but the summer tourists are gone. This shift leaves the bustling beach town unusually quiet – the perfect time to explore! 

During your trip, enjoy some of the  best things to do in Huntington Beach , like watching the sunset from the Huntington Beach Pier or biking along the beach’s 8.5-mile stretch. When the weather cools off in the evenings, grab a sweater and relax with a beach bonfire at Huntington City Beach. 

When you’re ready to shake off the sand, peruse the surf shops in Downtown Huntington Beach or shop from brand-name designers and local boutiques in Pacific City.

One of the most fun things Austin is known for is their street art. Go on a mural hunt to see how many you can find! Then hang out in the eclectic SoCo District, check out the botanical gardens and watch the sunset on Mount Bonnell.

28. Truth or Consequences, New Mexico

It’s a real town with a funny name. It also happens to be one of the best warm winter vacations in the US, as it’s one of the warmest spots in New Mexico.

With average temperatures in the upper 50’s and mostly sunny, this will feel like a true vacation, especially if you’re coming from a northern climate. 

But real quick, let’s address this funny name. Formerly known as Hot Springs, the town adopted a new name in 1950 when a TV game show was looking for a town to adopt the popular show’s name. And so it did!

Anyway, back to why you should visit in the winter. There are quite a few things to do in Truth or Consequences, and outdoor adventure lead the way. Nearby White Sands National Park is home to some pretty jaw-dropping sights.

Go hiking or boating at  Elephant Butte Lake State Park , which is just a few minutes drive from town. Soak in mountain views at Caballo Lake State Park, or check out the hiking and gardens at Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park.

In town, be sure to visit some popular hot springs, which are fun to experience in a mild winter climate. And of course, catch river views of the Rio Grande, which runs alongside the town.

Expect the traveler’s spirits to rise who escapes winter to soak up the sun on the Gulf Coast. Join the athletic as they run, bike and walk across the Clearwater Memorial Causeway Bridge. Down below gaze at the yachts, boats and sandy beaches.

For sunbirds, Clearwater is a great place to land. It wins numerous accolades including USA Today’s “Top 10 Beach in America.” Clearwater is on the path for migratory birds so birdwatchers will delight. Clearwater is a short drive to St. Petersburg or Tampa Bay for dinner in the city.

Choices of entertainment are endless but be sure to visit the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (home of Winter, star of The Dolphin Tale movie).

Spend an afternoon jet-skiing, parasailing or fishing. Clearwater is a perfect destination December through February but the warmest temperatures are in February. The average high temperatures can reach the low 70s.

Best place to stay? If price is not object, then book Pier House 60 Clearwater Beach Resort . It is just a short hop to the Pier to enjoy marvelous sunsets as well as street performers and craft vendors each night. Or if you want to stay on the nearby island, book the Sheraton Sand Key Resort .

30. Scottsdale, Arizona (one of the hottest on this list of warm winter vacations USA)

Average temp:  high 67 / low 36

Scottsdale, Arizona is a great choice for a warm getaway in winter. The weather averages in the 60s-70s.

There are so many gorgeous resorts in Scottsdale . With heated pools and luxurious spas, you could spend an entire weekend relaxing. Some resorts offer complimentary bikes for you to explore the resort grounds and surroundings.

Be sure to check out Old Town Scottsdale for restaurants, shops and galleries. If you’re a foodie, you’re in luck because Scottsdale is known for having some of the best restaurants around. For more delicious local restaurants, head to the Arcadia neighborhood.

For shopping, head to Scottsdale Fashion Square which is the biggest mall in Arizona and full of luxurious high-end shops. Close by the mall is the Scottsdale Waterfront, which is a stylish and upscale community in the middle of downtown Scottsdale.

Golfing is a popular activity as Scottsdale has some of the best golf courses in America! The Waste Management Open at TPC Scottsdale happens annually in February.

If you’re not a golfer but wanting to get outdoors, there is a variety of easy to strenuous hiking trails around the valley. If you’re feeling adventurous, head to Camelback Mountain or try Scenic Trail for a more kid-friendly hike.

Arizona host 15 MLB professional teams for spring training in stadiums across the valley, including Scottsdale. If you’re a baseball fan, visit towards the end of February to see a game!

If you’re traveling with the whole family, check out Butterfly Wonderland, the largest butterfly conservatory in America. Nearby, you can also visit the OdySea Aquarium.

As you can see, Scottsdale is the perfect place to visit in the winter in USA with perfect weather and tons of fun activities for all ages.

31. Big Island, Hawaii

A popular place to visit as a warm winter destination (USA) is the Big Island, Hawaii. In winter the area is active and filled with events and activities to explore around the island.

Even though Hawaii is a year-round destination, visit in December to get a different vibe to include the Christmas holiday. Festivities includes pageants, Christmas fairs, Christmas parades and other popular holiday events and celebrations around the islands. 

Other popular activities include visiting the  Hilo area attractions if you want to see lush gardens, waterfalls and gorgeous landscapes on the east side of the island.

Doing a fun road trip around the island, visiting the state and national parks or outdoor experience like hiking, snorkeling, scuba diving, horseback riding or sailing. A Big Island tour is one of the best winter road trips in the USA too! It’s truly an open book of adventure depending on your interests and ability to explore around the island!

32. Port Isabel, Texas

If you’re looking for a beautiful warm weather getaway for winter, Port Isabel, Texas, is calling your name. This casual, laid-back Southern Texas town will welcome you with the beautiful Gulf of Mexico and the iconic Port Isabel Lighthouse. With an average daytime temperature of 71.6 degrees F, you cannot go wrong! 

Climb the 75 steps to the top of the lighthouse with a fabulous view. Explore the former keeper’s cottage after you climb to the top of the lighthouse. Pro tip: wear closed-in shoes to help make the climb safely to the top of the lighthouse. A fun fact is that this is the only lighthouse along the Texas coast that is open to the public.

After you explore the lighthouse and the grounds, take a boat cruise. History buffs will appreciate all that the Port Isabel History Museum has to offer. View the murals and learn about pirates and how the area came to be.  

Top-notch Southern hospitality is what you can expect when exploring Port Isabel. The Town Square in Port Isabel, Texas, offers shopping and dining experiences that you will be talking about after your visit. The seafood, tacos and Italian dishes are sure to win you over. 

This small town offers incredible Gulf of Mexico experiences. Plan to spend a couple of days in Port Isabel, or stay for a month! Book a stay at a traditional motel or inn in Port Isabel and enjoy the quiet that this community has to offer.

33. Joshua Tree National Park, California

Average temp:  high 63 / low 38

If you’re looking for a quick winter getaway one the weekend, this is just the place! Joshua Tree National Park is located in Southern California, near Palm Springs.

With average temps hovering around 60 degrees all winter long, it’s going to feel real good to escape the cold! Warm up with plenty of hiking trails in and around the park, as well as many other things to do.

Visit the Keys Ranch to see how families lived in the harsh desert. Hike the Hidden Valley Trail, Arch Rock Trail, Hall of Horrors or Ryan Mountain Trails for fun views of the park.

There are a few other quirky attractions to see while in the area, like the World Famous Crochet Museum, the Glass Outhouse Gallery and the Desert Christ Park.

When looking for places to stay, check into the Sacred Sands or Adobe in the Palms. Be sure to book early because there’s not a whole lot of options really close to the park.

34. Destin, Florida (one of my favorite on this list of warm winter vacations USA)

Average temp:  high 62 / low 46

Ending this list with another Florida beach. They’re popular for a reason! The crisp, white sand on Florida’s panhandle is unbelievably beautiful. And with high’s in the 60’s during even the harshest winter months, Destin is a great spot for a warm winter vacation.

Aside from spending time on Florida’s Emerald Coast, head over to Harbor Walk Village for outdoor activities plus restaurants and shopping. And serious shoppers will want to visit the Silver Sands Outlet mall – it’s one of the largest in the Southeast US with over 100 stores.

Destin is a great destination for couples or families, groups or bachelorette parties. Family-friendly activities like go-karts, arcades and mini golf, not to mention the beach! And for adult-only trips, Destin has a fantastic restaurant and nightlife scene.

As far as hotels go, there’s plenty of Destin accommodation options right on the beach. Or for budget-friendly places, stay a little further off the main strip. Look at nearby Miramar Beach and Seaside if you’re looking to get out of the city a bit.

Sometimes, the promise of a warm-weather vacation is all you need to get you through those cold and snowy winter days. Fortunately, you don’t have to travel far or spend thousands on long flights to find sunshine and hot temperatures. While the rest of the country shivers through frigid temperatures, these domestic destinations are practically tropical, even in the winter.

Personal finance site WalletHub crunched the data to find out where you should head for a warm-weather vacation in The United States this winter. The study compared 69 of the most populated U.S. metropolitan areas across six categories: travel costs and hassles, local costs, attractions, weather, activities, and safety. 

To be considered a warm winter destination as part of the survey, cities must have an average December temperature of 57 degrees or higher. 

These are the 10 best warm-weather winter destinations in The United States.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Keep pool party season going through the winter at Stadium Swim at the Circa Hotel in Las Vegas. All six pools are heated to around 100 degrees, so you can pretend summer never left. 

Aside from the beautiful weather, December is a great time to visit Las Vegas as the casinos go all out with holiday decorations.

San Diego, California

Experience all the fun winter activities without the frigid temperatures in San Diego. Despite the warm temperatures, you can still find outdoor skating rinks where you can spin around atop faux ice right on the beach.

Austin, Texas

With almost 13 miles of trails, the Barton Creek Greenbelt is at its best during the winter months, when temperatures are perfect for hiking—not too cold or hot. Dallas, Texas

Charleston, South Carolina

Throw your New Year’s resolutions out the window if you plan to visit Charleston in the winter because this is the city’s prime season for culinary festivals. During the end of January, the Charleston Wine Festival tempts people out of Dry January.

Or, visit the first weekend in March, when the Charleston Wine + Food Festival offers the chance to sample some of the region’s best cuisine.

San Francisco, California

If you’re hoping to go whale-watching on your trip to San Francisco, winter is the best time to go. From December to May, you’ll have the best chance of seeing the most variety of whale species. Don’t worry—whale-watching boats will have heated cabins.

If Houston’s mild winter weather isn’t hot enough for you, spice things up at the annual Hops n’ Hot Sauce Festival , held on January 20. The event will have lots of local craft beer to sample, along with some of the city’s best food trucks—so you can get a taste of Houston’s finest all in one place.

What better way to start the new year than on a warm Jamaican beach, rum punch in hand? January is actually Jamaica’s coolest month with the average temperature dropping to a still balmy 77°F.

Base yourself in Montego Bay . It may be the tourist center, but with that comes white-sand beaches, inland mountain and forest adventures, laid-back towns, and that infamous ‘no problem’ vibe. To the east at Plantation Cove, the Rebel Salute festival celebrates all things reggae on the 19th and 20th.

Of the many resorts, my pick is the Grand Palladium Resort and Spa . A sprawling all-inclusive resort, it offers private beaches and one of Jamaica’s biggest pools, complete with a wet bar. In Cockpit Country Park, sail a bamboo raft down the Martha Brae through dense tropical forests. Take sundowners at Rick’s Cafe on the cliffs of Negril and watch spectacular high-divers take the plunge into bath-warm waters below.

2. Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico in January is a hotspot for fun and warm weather. And if you’re an American citizen you don’t even need a passport to get there . Basking in daytime temperatures lingering in the low 80s, the capital San Juan sparkles, and nowhere more so than the Old Town. 

Already colorful and atmospheric, it goes into overdrive in January with the week-long Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián . From the 18th-24th, hundreds of artists and musicians and thousands of visitors flood the streets in huge extravagant parades. The balmy evening temperatures ensure the party continues late into the night, every night.

Thankfully, San Juan also offers beaches tailormade for recovery. Get away from the crowds at Blue Flag beach Balneario de Carolina and laze under palm and almond trees. For city chic and convenience, Condado Beach is just minutes from the Old Town. While you’re there take a kayak trip into neighboring Condado Lagoon and keep an eye out for its resident manatees.

3. Saint Lucia

A country of unbridled nature, St Lucia is for me the most beautiful of all the Caribbean islands . That landscape of greens, more than three-quarters of which is rainforest, comes from St Lucia’s impressive rainfall. January, however, is dry season when the rains thin and the sun shines. It’s the best time to take advantage of the island’s many natural assets before February brings peak season crowds. 

The sensible thing to do is hit the beach. Sugar Beach , part of the Viceroy resort , is the island’s most famed and spectacular. Set between the twin Piton Mountains, its white sands are imported in place of the original gray. Save yourself the long walk and resort charges to access it by visiting on a boat trip. My personal pick is Anse Mamin Beach , a dreamy curve of palm-fringed seclusion that’s hard to get to but worth the effort.

It would be criminal to come to St Lucia and miss out on its adventures. Hike Gros Piton , a moderately easy climb, with spectacular views. Zipline through the canopies of Babonneau Rainforest to be at one with the hummingbirds. Or slow things down with a rainforest aerial tram tour. Ascending from the heat of the lowlands to the ecological park in the forest reserve is something you’ll never forget.

The default go-to for warm places in the US in January, Florida is home to beautiful beaches and buzzing cities. On its Gulf Coast, Sarasota flies more under the radar than its neighbors Tampa, Miami, and West Palm Beach . That’s not to say it offers any less in terms of natural beauty, city glitz, and sophistication. Indeed, it’s one of Florida’s most scenic areas .

January sees average temperatures in the low 60s. Highs tend to sit in the mid-70s though, making it warm enough to enjoy many outdoor attractions including the lush habitats of nearby Myakka River State Park. Bring binoculars to spot limpkins and ospreys soaring through the skies above and alligators and turtles slinking through the waters below.

Sarasota city is also a cultural hub ; the 66-acre Ringling Museum Complex is its crowning glory. Now Florida’s state art museum, it’s a showcase for railroad magnate John Ringling’s extensive art collection including the Circus Museum and his extravagant Venetian Gothic home, Cà d’Zan.

5. San Luis Obispo, California

With its Mediterranean climate and lazy, low-key vibe, San Luis Obispo is a California dream in January. Roughly equidistant between the city giants of LA and San Francisco , it couldn’t be more removed from either. That location also makes it a perfect launch point into the wild wonders of Big Sur .

Mild January temperatures make the beaches and trails of nearby Montaña de Oro State Park ripe for exploration. Appetite earned, visit SLO’s downtown to celebrate restaurant month in its many quirky eateries. Find yourself there on a Thursday and the farmer’s market brings live music, barbecues, and a party atmosphere to Higuera Street.

Tranquil and historic, Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is the heart of downtown. Stroll the peaceful gardens and beautifully preserved but unassuming church for insight into its Chumash tribal and Spanish colonial identity. At the other end of the cultural spectrum, Bubblegum Alley is a 15-foot-high, 70-foot-long repository of chewed gum . Something of a tourism icon, its millions of pieces of gum are every bit as disgusting as you might imagine.

6. South Padre Island, Texas

South Padre Island is so popular with tourists escaping cold winter climes that it has spawned its own nickname for them. Winter Texans , as they’re known, have long enjoyed its subtropical climate and diverse wildlife habitats. Its geography is a prime reason for this climatic oddity. A long, narrow barrier island close to the Mexican border, it’s a haven of remote beaches, placid waters, and outdoor adventures . 

Visit Laguna Madre aboard a kayak or SUP to get in amongst its abundant sea life. Join a fishing cruise into the Gulf of Mexico or a dolphin boat tour for a less strenuous aquatic adventure. For pure exhilaration, a horseback ride along the seemingly endless Seashell Beach is hard to top.

South Padre Island is also renowned as a twitcher’s dream. The SPI Birding and Nature Center is a 50-acre paradise of boardwalks, bird blinds, and watchtowers dedicated to avian study. Perfectly positioned along the Mississippi and Central migratory flyways , some 500 bird species regularly flock to its shores. The visitor center and exhibit hall are a deep well of birding insight. Keep an eye out for the useful blackboard out front that lists recent sightings.

7. Palm Springs, California

• Average temperature: 58°F

Cold nights bring Palm Springs’ average January temperatures down into the chilly sub-60s. Daytime temperatures, however, hover around the 70 mark – much more amenable to a warm vacation spot in January. Add the Californian sun and things really start to heat up.

Retro chic Palm Springs is hot in every way, a benchmark of Californian cool . It went from a ’60s Rat Pack hangout to an ’80s retirement town before being reborn in the ’90s. Today its iconic mid-century architecture – stylish hotels and eye-popping private homes – has become a hipster magnet. It’s also a beacon for the LGBTQI+ community.

January is peak season, so expect buzzing crowds across the city. Nowhere is that truer than at marquee events like the International Film Festival and American Express Golf Tournament . For something different, try the historical walking tour that peels back the modern facade to showcase the city’s true glamor.

For walking with a little more strain, hikers should head out into the spectacular surrounding desert landscapes . Coachella Valley (so much more than a music festival), Joshua Tree National Park, Indian and Tahquitz Canyons are all extraordinary.

8. Malibu, California

• Average temperature: 46°F

California’s location on the Sun Belt makes it an oasis among the warmest places in the US in January. Malibu and the Pacific Palisades are particularly lovely, although chilly evening temperatures make it appear far colder than it is. Daytime temperatures usually sit in the 60s and rain is rare .

While it doesn’t deliver the glitz of summer, January is when Malibu’s epic coastline really comes into its own . Surfers flock to the winter swells at aptly named Malibu Surfrider Beach. Yet there’s so much more to Malibu than this one spot that indelibly links it to its surfing reputation.

With 27 miles of stunning coves, caves, and cliffs to discover, January is my favorite time for crowd-free coastal walks. It’s also the height of the whale-watching season. Keep one eye on the ocean as you walk for tell-tale plumes from the blowholes of passing pods. Premium viewing spots are from Point Dume and El Matador state beaches .

Turn your gaze inland for views of the astonishing Getty Villa . Almost as spectacular as nature’s show, it is perched on an ocean-view hillside; a showcase of Greek and Roman art. 

Best warm places to visit in January in Central America

• Average temperature: 71°F

If it’s true winter warmth you seek, head south. January is the start of the dry season in Belize . Daytime temperatures linger in the low 80s and the humidity falls. 

For clear, dry and sunny days head to the Cayes – 450-plus gorgeous islands scattered offshore. Indulge in long, luxurious beach days at 5-star resorts , lounge on palm-fringed beaches, and swim and snorkel magical reefs. For diving, the Belize Barrier Reef is one of the Caribbean’s great dive sites. Further offshore the world-famous Big Blue Hole yawns into the depths, where water turns from luminescent blue to ink black.

I’ve always loved the Placencia peninsula to the south for its raw, unadulterated beauty. Be wary of swimming in the lagoon though. It may be home to friendly manatees but lurking in the depths you’ll also encounter toothier, less trustworthy saltwater crocs.

For a tropical climate, the lesser-populated Toledo District is a great choice. Lush and exotic, you’ll find quiet ancient Mayan ruins among the tropical jungle highlands. Typically, the crowds head for big-name ruins elsewhere at Altun Ha, Xunantunich and Caracol. But in Nim Li Punit you’ll find space to explore a classic period site complete with ruined pyramids and stone tombs.

10. Nicaragua

Several hundred miles south, Nicaragua is blessed with awesome January weather. Less rough and ready than Belize, yet less touristy than its southern neighbor Costa Rica, Nicaragua has it all. 

Untamed beaches fringe the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. Some of Central America’s best surf spots adorn the latter, groomed in January by offshore winds and almost no rain. The prime surf town is San Juan del Sur , but in truth, it’s more about the partying than the surfing. 

Better to head north past the waves of Playa Maderas and stay at Morgan’s Rock Hacienda overlooking Playa Ocotal . A gorgeous and wildly romantic eco-lodge, it puts you in the heart of the area’s extraordinarily biodiverse rainforest.

Got a taste for surfing? Try it inland on the slopes of one of Nicaragua’s landscape-defining volcanoes. Still on the Pacific coast, head north to buzzing León and brace yourself for the nearby Cerro Negro volcano. Rent a specially adapted board and hit speeds of 60mph as you fly down black ash waves. For an added thrill, that ominous sound you can hear is likely the still-active volcano rumbling beneath your feet.

15 Warm Places to Visit in December

Oh, December. The glacial last month of the year stirs visions of snow-covered hills, wooden toboggans, hot cocoa with mini marshmallows and ripping open presents while fluffy powder falls outside. In our youth, December break meant being out of school, frequenting the local skating rink in town and competing against other neighborhood kids in sledding contests. It also meant road trips to visit grandma and grandpa at their residence upstate, or even the occassional weekend at the nearest ski mountain . As we grew older, mulled wine and decadent, spiked eggnog joined the party.

But, of course, there is another way (well many) to spend December still surrounded by friends and family that has nothing to do with freezing temperatures or icy roads.  

It’s time to trade flurries for frozen drinks and put your bikini to good use. In your not-so-distant future, we see hours lazing on the glimmering shores of a far-away beach and eating fresh coconut. We’d deem that the polar opposite of arctic. A favored port for cruise ships, Old San Juan recalls an earlier era with its blue cobblestoned lanes, Spanish colonial buildings and 16th-century structures. In juxtaposition, the contemporary Condado district flaunts resorts, casinos, nightlife and restaurants, which leads us to the food. We're salivating just thinking about heaping plates full of tostones, pasteles and mofongo. Round-trip flights in December will set you back approximately $510. A Spontaneous, 24-Hour Trip To Chicago, Illinois, Created A Core Memory

When I turned 40 , I made a promise to myself that this would be my best year yet. I would get reacquainted with the "me" that existed before becoming a partner, mom, and coworker; I would tap into my truest self and embrace the awesome and wise woman I am. I would travel to the places I write about, alone and with my kids. I would get out of my own way; making "yes, and" my mantra and see where that got me.

It got me to Chicago, Illinois. To a P!INK concert at Soldier Field with one of my favorite people in the world .

My spontaneous "yes and" mindset was put to the test a few weeks ago, when I got a text on a random weekday asking if I'd be up for seeing P!INK the following weekend in Chicago. I thought about it for less than a minute; I was in. I found a cheap (and direct!) flight from CVG to Midway, and Jackie used her budget traveling stealth to secure us a room at the Congress Hotel , a historic hotel right on Michigan Avenue just minutes from the stadium.

Packing for such a quick trip was a breeze; I was able to fit everything into a sleek backpack. I'd never flown into Chicago before; the waters of Lake Michigan are a brilliant cobalt blue and the cityscape -- with its striking architecture and iconic attractions -- is breathtaking. My 10-year-old is super into baseball right now and was delighted at this photo I snapped flying over the White Sox stadium:

I landed around 3 p.m. and took an Uber to the hotel. After a quick shower, we decided to make the most of a beautiful Saturday afternoon and take in the (iconic) views along Lake Shore Drive. Chicago is an incredibly walkable town and it's easy to get around on foot or with public transportation, which kept this trip extremely affordable, especially as we split the bill (and our concert tickets were just $40).

The concert itself was awesome - if you ever get the chance to see P!INK, do it. She put on an incredible show that brought me back to high school in all the best ways. More importantly, though, if you ever get the opportunity to drop everything and rendezvous with a lovely friend for a night in the city, do it. This kind of spontaneous travel makes way for the kind of memories that last a lifetime.

La Palma is the Canaries’ greenest and most unspoiled spot, with pristine night skies ideal for star-gazing and pine-scented air that clears the mind as much as the lungs. It’s also a walkers’ island, where footpath signposts outnumber cars. Rock pools and waterfalls refresh flagging travellers, and the boutique hotel scene is surprisingly sharp. Lighthouse-turned-hotel Faro Punta Cumplida is dressed up with a swimming pool and silk bed linens; in the capital, Santa Cruz de La Palma, Hotel San Telmo , a restored 17th-century building, sets delightful sun-filled rooms around a garden and rooftop terrace.

Where to stay: For a truly memorable stay, bed down in Faro Punta Cumplida , a still-functioning 18th-century lighthouse in the rugged northeast of the island, arguably La Palma’s most enchanting region. Elsewhere, Hotel San Telmo is perfectly-located in the oldest part of Santa Cruz de La Palma.

Seville, Spain

Average March temperature : 21°C

The south coast of Spain is a good bet year-round, but March is a time for Seville to shine. The Andalusian city has warmer temperatures than many popular European destinations, which can become unbearable during the summer months. In spring, you're less likely to face the crowds but can wander around with just a light jacket in hand. Spend your time eating and drinking your way through the city – tapas at El Rinconcillo followed by drinks at one of Seville's many rooftop bars is highly recommended.

Where to stay: Built specially for Seville’s 1929 Expo, Alfonso XIII was commissioned by the then king of Spain, who gave it his own name. Now, The hotel’s 148 rooms alternate Andalusian , Castilian and Moorish decorative styles, making this a beautiful and unusual choice. Meanwhile, Corral del Rey is a 16-room boutique divided across buildings on either side of the narrow street with which it shares its name. Two of the rooms have private pool terraces for a glass of wine while taking a dip.

San Diego, California

For a taste of sunny southern California without the crowds, San Diego can’t be beaten. It’s an eternal beach-bum city with a temperament permanently set to ‘chill’. Join the surfer dudes and VW vans at Ocean Beach, or cycle past perennial volleyball games along the Pacific Beach boardwalk, stopping now and then to sip a homespun brew (AleSmith, Green Flash, Ballast Point). It’s laid-back, yes, but not lazy: there’s plenty of energy in the city’s exploding street art-scene (try North Park, where even utility boxes have been given a paint job). Or get experimental at restaurants such as Wrench and Rodent (‘unorthodox nigiri and sashimi’) and the Gaslamp Quarter’s craft cocktail bars (find Noble Experiment behind a wall of kegs).

Where to stay: Les Artistes in Del Mar, an affordable converted motel with artist-themed rooms: the first-floor 'Gaugin' and 'Diego Rivera' both have baths. Or, if it's a story you're after, few hotels in America can claim as compelling history as the Hotel del Coronado (or ‘the Del’ to those in the know), which celebrates its 135th birthday in 2023. For living like a local, this converted loft should do the trick.

Whitsunday Islands, Australia

Average March temperature : 22°C

It’s peak season here, but with good reason. Longer, sunnier days are ideal for sailing , the best way to explore what are among the world’s clearest waters and whitest beaches. Living up to its name, Whitehaven, in the Great Barrier Reef and only accessible by boat, is covered in bone-white sand. The Whitsundays’ newest, most secluded retreat, Elysian, only has 10 rooms, so even at the busiest time of year, guests have their own piece of Eden. And by rooms, we really mean oceanfront villas , with Australian hardwood interiors and rainforest views. It’s almost impossible to leave, but do try, or you’ll miss out on twilight-yoga classes and swimming in the retreat’s private cove.

Where to stay: Hayman Island , a polished Great Barrier Reef hotel with brutalist architecture and softly sexy rooms. Alternatively, Daydream Island Resort is a breezy, barefoot retreat ideal for families. For something private, this apartment has impeccable views.

Garden Route, South Africa

There’s no better time than spring to meander the Garden Route . We’ve described driving the Western Cape to the Eastern Cape as South Africa’s greatest hit compilation and it’s true: absurdly beautiful beaches, ragged mountains, wine country, virgin forests, inland lakes and amazing wildlife, from whales and dolphins to the Big Five. March is blissfully temperate and falls neatly outside the high seasons. Do it right, and do it slow: the best bits aren’t in the driving but exploring outside the car, whether that’s canoeing through Garden Route National Park or hiking Robberg Nature Reserve’s wild and wonderful cliffs.

Where to stay: Imposing and grand, Ellerman House is both intensely private and incredibly warm, with one of the best private art collections in South Africa. In Hermanus, The Marine has a prime position, and is comfortable and upmarket.

Havana, Cuba

Average March temperature: 28°C

What is it about Havana that’s so enchanting? Is it really just cigars and classic cars? Or is it the sensually rag-tag mix of weathered Spanish mansions, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, punchy food and grande dame hotels? It’s all of it, of course. Tick off old-school experiences, such as sipping Daiquiris in Hemingway’s hangouts, salsa dancing and relaxing in the cigar room at Brando’s favourite, the Grand Packard; then hit up the newer spots: Salchipizza, a bakery from Michelin-starred chef Alberto González; pulled-pork crepes at Belview Art Café.

Where to stay: Casa de Miriam y Sinai is a fantastic first-floor flat oasis of calm and space, with three spacious rooms, one with a street-side balcony, which are spotless and have top-drawer bathrooms. The colourful creative Malecón 663 has individually-decorated rooms, a restaurant, several bars and a concept store.

Mergui Archipelago, Myanmar

Average March temperature : 33°C

There are around 800 islands in Myanmar’s Andaman Sea archipelago, and no places to stay. And that’s exactly what makes it special: it’s accessible, close to the border of Thailand , and yet completely remote. Populated only by the Moken people, settlements are few. Instead, there are just empty beaches, clumps of thick, primeval jungle and untouched coral reefs. The yachties’ version of Shangri-La, one can only visit by boat. With steady winds, clear waters and balmy temperatures, March is a great time for diving, particularly at the ominously named Shark Cave. Others can stick to trekking, getting up close to civets and crab-eating macaques.

Where to stay : With a pool overlooking the beach and horizon, you'll see some of the most impressive sunsets from Victoria Cliff Hotel in Kawthung. On Kyun Pila island, Awei Pila 's outdoor huts feel particularly special.

St Martin, Caribbean

Average March Temperature : 28°C

One island, two nations. That’s the appeal of St Martin, or St Maarten. The Dutch side is the party-hearty bit: casinos, the cruise-ship dock, duty-free malls. Amble to the French side, though, and things get more refined. There’s the pretty town of Marigot, and fine food (L’Auberge Gourmande, in a vintage Creole cottage, is the spot for escargot and veal). Most of the island’s buildings were flattened by 2017’s Hurricane Irma, but it’s been quick to rebuild. Capital Philipsburg is fully restored, and most of the big-ticket retreats have been revamped and reopened. (Belmond La Samanna’s new retro-chic look is a triumph.) Early March sees the Heineken Regatta blow into town with food stalls, bars and live concerts bringing the party to a specially constructed Regatta Village.

Where to stay: Overlooking an idyllic golden stretch of sand, Belmond La Samanna , is a sparkling resort located in St. Martin’s smartest neighbourhood. Those looking for something more private will appreciate this idyllic loft overlooking the perfectly turquoise waters.

Jaipur, India

Average March temperature : 32°C

The Pink City is a must-visit anyway, but come March it’s also the yellow city, the red city, the blue city and every-other-coloured city, due to the Holi festivities. Though you’ll certainly get covered in rainbow powder paint, breathe a sigh of relief that it’s not quite as wild here as in Delhi . In Jaipur, the vibe is more local gathering than en masse mania. Despite India’s signature chaos, there’s always been something very regal about Jaipur – the palaces, the temples, the forts – and you can add hotels to that list, too. Suján Rajmahal Palace just might be the last word in opulence, an actual palace that’s hosted Queen Elizabeth II and Jackie Onassis. It was recently refurbished with lavish, custom-designed wallpaper and fabrics.

Where to stay: Suján Rajmahal Palace is a gloriously revamped hotel with a colourful past. For grandeur, Fairmont Jaipur is a 255-room extravaganza set in terraced water gardens with Mughal-style pavilions and frangipani trees, while larger groups can rent their own castle on Airbnb .

Italy in October (2024): What To Know and Where To Go

If you are considering a trip to Italy in October, rest assured —it’s one of the best times of year to visit. Even travel guru Rick Steves cites October as a month  that combines  convenience with pleasant weather .

Italy is consistently ranked among the world’s most popular tourist destinations. With all its culinary, cultural, architectural, and historical charms, it is never totally devoid of tourists.

But if you have a flexible schedule and can travel during one of the shoulder seasons, October can be an ideal time to go. You have missed the high season (and higher costs) from May to September, and the hordes of summer tourists waiting to visit museums and historical sites are (mostly) gone.  Yet the weather remains generally mild, with sunny days and crisp evenings.

Although October travel is becoming increasingly popular, you’ll encounter fewer tour groups than in the high seasons, allowing you to enjoy a more authentic experience.

The Lures of Italy in October

By October, the oppressive heat and humidity have diminished, making touring much more comfortable. And if you’re heading south, the weather may still be warm enough to enjoy the beaches. 

Fewer tourists mean shorter queues at popular attractions, greater ease in making reservations at popular restaurants, museums, historic sites, and entertainment venues, and lower prices for flights, auto rentals, and accommodations.

Food and wine lovers will delight in the bounty of mushrooms, truffles, and olives and the seasonal wine harvests and festivals throughout the month.

Yummy Food Festivals

October is an incredibly wonderful time for food lovers to visit Italy. Many  food festivals ( sagre)  take place in different towns and regions throughout the country, each focused on a particular food or dish associated with the area.

Here are just a few examples:

• Visitors can indulge in white truffles at the International Fair of the White Truffle in Alba and attend the National Chestnut Fair dedicated to chestnuts (both in the Piedmont region).
• The Porcini Mushroom Festival, celebrating the King of the Woods, is held in Casal di Pari, in the province of Grosseto, and a Porcini Mushroom and Chianina Meat Festival takes place in Castelfranco di Sotto, in the province of Pisa (both in Tuscany).
• The Pizzocchero d’Oro Festival celebrates a unique pasta shape made in the town of Teglio in the province of Sondrio, and the ancient village of Tirano (also in Sondrio) holds an Apple and Grape Festival (both in Lombardy).
• MortadellaBo, the festival of mortadella, takes place on Piazza Maggiore in Bologna (Emilia Romagna), its namesake city.

Because the dates of these festivals vary from year to year, it’s prudent to check with the regional tourism bureaus to learn more about these and other food festivals. (More information about some of these festivals is provided below).

In addition, October is a great time to go foraging for mushrooms or truffle-hunting in the forests.  

Weather in Italy in October 

Average temperatures in Italy in October range between 45°F and 75℉, varying widely by destination. The weather in the south is usually warmer than in the north , but we even caught some beachgoers in  Diano Marina (Liguria) in October. The weather will likely be milder at the beginning of the month than at the end.

Sicily is one of the warmest regions. S icilians consider October to still be beach season, and securing lounge chairs and umbrellas is likely easier. ( Mondello Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Sicily.)

The moderate weather is perfect for those who love the outdoors; it can be ideal for hiking or trekking in the countryside except at high altitudes.

While it may rain, there is less rain than in the spring and far less precipitation than in November through April (November is the rainiest month). Southern regions, like Sicily and Naples, tend to have less rain in October.

Like the U.S., the weather varies considerably depending on which of Italy’s 20 regions you visit. For example, in Milan (in the north), temperatures average between 50℉ and 66℉; in Bari (located in the south), they range from 61℉ and 71℉. (Read about some of the hidden gems of Milan )

And like everywhere else, there are fluctuations from year to year. With global warming, Italy, too,  has seen increases in average temperatures and more extreme weather conditions.

What to Pack for Visiting Italy in October

Because the weather can vary, it’s best to dress in layers and be prepared for fluctuations from day to day and even over the day. Packing a cardigan, denim jacket, or shawl is a good idea if the weather gets chilly.

Men may be comfortable with a long-sleeved shirt, pants, and cardigan (or travel vest ) for extra warmth . Because it won’t be too cold, there’s no need to pack heavy overcoats or boots.

With the weather becoming increasingly unpredictable worldwide, women should bring a few lightweight tops and capri pants in case it turns unseasonably warm. We always take rain jackets and umbrellas wherever we go—just in case.

October holidays in Italy

Two national holidays fall in October:

• Columbus Day, October 12; and
• United Nations Day, October 24th. 

On these days, offices and most stores are closed, so keep this in mind as you plan your visit. In beach resorts or other summer getaways, hotels and restaurants may have closed for the season, so be sure to check openings before you go.

The Feast of Saint Francis (October 4) isn’t a public holiday, but it is observed in many churches, particularly in Perugia. While Halloween is not a traditional Italian holiday, some themed events are often organized for children.

Italy in October: Best places to go

Depending on your interests, no destination in Italy is really off-limits in October, although some have more special appeals than others. Here are some suggestions.

Piedmont in October

Piedmont is known for its International White Truffle Fair , held in Alba every weekend in October. Here, visitors can learn about and taste this gastronomic delicacy. There are chefs’ dinners, cooking classes, wine tastings, and folklore events.

It’s a lovely time to stroll along the Po River , which runs through Torino (known as the country’s chocolate capital), and soak in the city views from another perspective. There are so many  things to do in Turin , and no visit to Turin is complete without a stop at the Royal Palace of Turin, which houses a magnificent collection of art and artifacts from the House of Savoy family. It’s a great time to see the autumn foliage as well.

Piedmont, home of the famous Barolo and Barbaresco wine regions, offers truffle tastings and wine and chocolate events during the month of October. 

Although prices drop in November, you’re more likely to hit rainy weather.

Sicily in October

Sicily in October is a good option for beach lovers. The water temperature may even be warm enough to swim, and the risk of rain is relatively low. Average daily temperatures range between 19ºC and 24ºC.

One appealing option is Mondello Beach , a favorite of many locals. Liberty-style villas and an architecturally stunning bathing station (now housing a restaurant and bar) frame the water. Another seaside favorite is the beach at Cefalu.

The less crowded season is also a great time to explore the multicultural treasures of cities like Palermo, Taormina, and Siracusa. Established in Palermo in 2006, Le Vie dei Tesori is a unique cultural festival that transforms cities and small villages across Sicily into widespread museums with concerts, art exhibitions, and more. In October, visitors can participate in a series of events in Catania, Sciacca, Alcamo, Ragusa (the setting o f Detective Montalbano ), Scicli, and Noto.

Tuscany in October

Tuscany is filled with cultural treasures, including museums, churches, medieval architecture, and well-preserved small towns and villages. The countryside offers verdant landscapes filled with olive trees and vineyards with a tapestry of fall colors as their backdrop.

While large cities—like Florence, Siena, Lucca, and San Gimignano—are crowded with tourists in summer, the crowds thin out a bit in October when kids are back in school, making it a perfect time to tour and visit museums. The Festival of Santa Reparata is held on October 8th each year,  Festival of Santa Reparata . This major historical and cultural event includes a parade through the city’s historical center. 

The Lucca Comics & Games convention, the largest comic festival in Europe, is traditionally held at the end of October.

Some of our favorite smaller towns to visit in Tuscany include San Gusme and Castellina in Chianti (both in the Chianti region), and the beach resorts of Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio , both on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Many food festivals are held in October throughout the region. The olive harvest that produces the region’s extra virgin olive oil and the white truffle season (in San Miniato) begin.  Vino novello , a young and fruity red wine, begins to appear before its traditional release on Saint Martin Day in November.  

Terre di Pisa is a relatively young (and still undiscovered) wine region in Tuscany that is worth exploring.

Val d’Aosta in October

Val d’Aosta , Italy’s smallest region, is slightly off the beaten track. This has left its quaint village more authentic and unspoiled by mass tourism. 

Weather in the Aosta Valley can be glorious in October. The fresh mountain air lures hikers who soak in breathtaking mountain views of the valley with its fall foliage on display.

The region is known for its Alpine foods and wines, including more than 100 varieties of cheese, including the prized DOP Fontina . Many people say that the fondue in Val d’Aosta is the best to be had.

Fall is the chestnut and mushroom (especially Porcini) season and the time for the Vendemmia , the grape harvest. On the last Sunday in October, Chatilion, the region’s “honey capital,” hosts a festival dedicated to its delicious honey . In October, there are also apple festivals in the town centers at Antey and Gressan.

Another unique festival held in Val d’Aosta in October is the Black Bread Festival ( Lo Pan Ner ). Historically only a few families could produce the bread at different times of the year, which involved women kneading the flour, men baking, and children awaiting the tasting.

Umbria in October

Umbria is called the green heart of Italy . Its hills are covered with more than seven million trees,  yielding five different types of olives. In October, the region boasts an average of five hours of sunshine each day. 

While the month of October is low season for tourists, one exception is the town of Assisi, where the country’s largest religious procession, the Feast of St. Francis, takes place.

Each year, the EuroChocolate festival is held in Perugia (the region’s capital and the birthplace of Perugina chocolate ). The event brings chocolate art displays, sculpting, tastings, and street performances to the city. Held since 1933, it is one of the largest chocolate festivals in Europe.

White truffles are showcased at the autumn food festival at the end of October in the small medieval town of Gubbio (featured in the long-running Don Matteo TV series). The festival includes cooking events and meetings with starred chefs. Many religious festivals also honor St. Francis of Assisi on his feast day, October 4. 

Puglia in October

  Puglia, l ocated at the heel of Italy’s boot, has become one of Italy’s most popular tourist destinations. 

In October, the temperature is pretty mild. There is abundant sunshine most of the time, but there can be some rain. It’s a nice time to visit some of the interesting towns and villages in the region, including Ostuni, Locorotondo , Trani, Martina Franca, Galatina , and Alberobello (home of the trulli ).

Wine lovers can enjoy winery visits and tastings of some of the region’s special wines (such as Rosato, the pink wine of Puglia) during the low season when producers have more time to spend with them.

Emilia Romagna in October

October is typically the driest month in Emilia Romagna, the region known for having some of the best foods in Italy. 

In the fall, the region is a foodie’s paradise with food fairs and festivals. The Castel del Rio Chestnut PGI Fest is held every Sunday in the village center. At the beginning of October, the Mostra del Fungo e del Tartufo e Festa dell’Uva (the mushroom and truffle exhibition and grape festival) is held in the streets of the ancient village of Bobbio.

Every year, Tartufesta (the white truffle festival) is held between October and November in the Appennino Bolognese (the hilly area around Bologna). If you are a truffle lover, this National White Truffle Fair in Sant’ Agata Feltria is an event not be be missed. The fragrance of white truffles permeates the air as vendors proudly display truffles and other seasonal products. You can even sit at long tables under a tent and enjoy a prepared meal with truffles.

Music lovers flock to the cities of Parma and Buseto from mid-September to mid-October for the Verdi Festival , and motor enthusiasts can attend the second round of the ACI Racing Weekend in Imola.

No visit to Emilia Romagna would be complete without a stop in Bologna , the region’s capital city. Although the Holy Day is on November 1, a host of weekend activities take place preceding it, both in the city and surrounding villages.

Liguria in October

Wedged between the mountains and the sea, Liguria is known for its agricultural products and seafood. Most tourists flock to the coastal towns of Portofino, Cinque Terre, and Sanremo, but more than 200 small towns and villages are tucked into the mountains further inland. Visiting after the prime tourist season allows you to experience these towns and villages like the locals.

While the weather in Liguria in October is generally sunny, it can get breezy with some rain towards the end of the month.

In the second half of the month, a Science Festival is held in Genoa with exhibitions, workshops, shows, and conferences geared to adults, children, and researchers. In October, the Castagneta and Polenta (chestnut and polenta) festival in Cogoleto showcases Ligurian food delicacies and desserts. 

There are also anchovy festivals in several small seaside towns like Laigueglia in the province of Savona.

The Ligurian hill town of Triora, known as the City of Witches, hosts a yearly Halloween festival.

Veneto in October

An easy day trip from Venice, the weather in the Veneto region can be quite pleasant in October, averaging 65℉. Located in the northeast, Veneto is one of the major wine-producing regions of Italy. In October, the trees and vines are adorned with fall colors.

Visitors to Veneto can enjoy the white truffle and porcini mushroom season in October. It also isn’t too late to see grape harvests (particularly for red and late-harvest wines) during this period. The wine region has more than 90 producers in 18 municipalities that offer tastings and vineyard tours by appointment. 

Asolo (dubbed the Pearl of Treviso and City of 100 Horizons) is perfect for those who love art, history, architecture, and wine.

The Vicenza Opera Festival , held in the Teatro Olimpico ,  is held in  Vicenza (about 35 minutes from Venice by train). It features opera, ballet,  and classical music. Other performances take place throughout the year. This is the city where you can see all the architectural masterpieces of Andrea Palladio.

If you are a fan of architecture, history , and/or culture, the  Regional Institute of Venetian Villas  and the  Association for Venetian Villas sponsor a two-day national event that tells the story of villas through visits, tastings, workshops, readings, performances, conferences,  and exclusive meetings.

Deciding where to go in Italy in October

There are so many places to go that choosing “the” place depends on where you’ve been and what you want to experience. Rain or shine, it’s hard to make a mistake when visiting Italy.

What will air travel be like?

TripIt, my  favorite travel organizing app, released a report on  October bookings , which suggests that October travel to Italy is becoming more popular than in years past.

Reviewing prospective October bookings by TripIt users and comparing them to 2022 volumes, they found a 64% increase in bookings to top destinations (such as Rome in Italy). One takeaway: To avoid hordes of tourists, choose smaller towns. 

A few last pieces of advice: The timing of the grape harvest, which generally takes place in September and October, varies from place to place and depends on weather conditions. So, confirm the harvest dates with any wineries you want to visit. Here are some of the regional wine tastings and tours to consider. 

Similarly, the dates of some religious and cultural festivals fluctuate from year to year. Local tourism offices can provide up-to-date information.

Also, if you are planning to travel, don’t forget that Daylight Savings Time (DST) in Italy ends on the last Sunday of October, so you must set back your watch.

From yesterday Barclays customers with Blue Rewards current accounts will no longer get a free £5 added to their balance every month. Customers may be reluctant to leave due to other perks such as free Apple TV, access to MLS matches, cashback incentives with major retailers and, perhaps most crucially, the 5.12% rate in their Rainy Day Saver.

For this week's Savings Guide, we asked  Savings Champion co-founder Anna Bowes to look at what else is out there in the easy access accounts market.

"Although the top easy access rates on standard best buy tables have dropped to around 4.8% AER, there are still some accounts available, like Barclays, that are paying 5% or even more," says Anna.

"But, there are a number of reasons that you might not be able to access these accounts, or you may feel that it's not worth it.

"One of the more popular tricks of the trade is to offer an account that is exclusive to those who hold, or open, a current account with the bank - just like Barclays.

"Added to that there may be a restriction on the deposit that will earn this top rate - so, with Barclays, it's £5,000.

"Another example is Santander's Edge Saver Account (Issue 2), which is paying a whopping 6% AER, but this rate includes a 12-month bonus of 1.5% AER and the maximum you can deposit and earn interest on is £4,000. Anything over this balance will earn zero interest, so the overall rate you earn will be diluted if the balance exceeds £4,000."

The rewards that come with the Santander account include cashback on household bills worth up to £10 a month, a similar offer with retailers, and no charges for using your card abroad.

As discussed, Barclays Blue Rewards comes with other perks too. 

Anna says: "It's important to check they are perks that you will benefit from before signing up just to have access to an account.

"The bottom line is that some accounts may look head and shoulders above the rest of the market, but there will usually be a reason that they are able to offer such a rate. So it's important to read the small print to make sure you will earn what you expect."

Here's a look at what's out there...

Sainsbury's has started working with police after noticing an increase in the number of fraudulent vouchers being used in its stores. 

The supermarket has recently become the subject of a TikTok trend called "the Sainsbury's method". 

Videos using the term have been posted on the social media platform showing people scanning a coupon several times at the checkout to get money off their shop. 

In one clip, a customer gets into an altercation with a shop worker who tries to stop them using the voucher. 

This video has since been removed from TikTok. 

In another, a person brags about getting shopping worth more than £400 for £6. 

Several videos also encourage viewers to join Discord servers to be sent the reusable voucher.

Other clips have warned people about the risks of using the coupon. 

We've also seen similar messages appearing on X, with people sharing images showing lots of products supposedly bought with the voucher.

In some instances, they have offered to sell others the coupon. 

Sainsbury's told the Money team it had seen an "increase in fraudulent coupons" being used and that there were processes in place to detect and block them. 

In-store detectives have also been tasked with monitoring false attempts, and the supermarket is working with police forces on the issue. 

"We continue to accept genuine coupons and vouchers," a spokesperson said. 

We contacted a number of other supermarkets that use a voucher system to see if they had experienced a similar problem. 

Morrisons told the Money team it was not experiencing any issues. 

We also understand that Asda already has security measures in place. 

Its rewards scheme is app based, with customers getting a unique one-time barcode linked to their account, rather than the same voucher code issued to each person. 

Customers have also been encouraged to be careful before clicking or entering anything online that isn't connected to an official Asda account or an official Asda website.

Tesco did not respond to our requests for comment. 

More landlords are selling up in London, with the number of buy-to-let properties up for sale hitting a 10-year-high. 

Analytics company TwentyCi found 22% of all newly listed homes in July had been available to rent in the last 10 years. 

This compares with 15.6% in July 2023. 

Across the rest of the UK, the number of landlords selling their properties was significantly lower at 9%. 

Chief executive of TwentyCi, Colin Bradshaw, said fears of a capital gains tax increase was one of the reasons for the landlord exodus. 

Capital gains tax is a levy on any profit you make when you sell or "dispose of" an asset, such as shares or a second home.

The amount you can earn in profit before paying capital gains tax is currently £3,000. 

Mr Bradshaw said another factor was expected measures such as the requirement for a minimum emissions rating for rented properties by 2030.

HM Revenue and Customs Data shows private landlords' income fell by 4% from £49.4bn in 2020-21 to £47.44bn in 2022-23. 

One of the biggest falls in income was in London at 12.5%, followed by Scotland at 6.9%. 

Oasis have announced two extra Wembley Stadium shows after their tour sold out over the weekend.

Both Liam and Noel Gallagher, as well as Ticketmaster, came under fire over the initial release - as fans spent hours in virtual queues, and some tickets ended up costing more than three times as much due to surge ticket pricing. The government has launched a review into the practice after the backlash.

Announcing two further dates at Wembley Stadium in September next year, Oasis said there would be a staggered "special invitation-only ballot ticket sale strategy", devised "as a small step towards making amends for the situation".

They said it needed "to be made clear" that the band "leave decisions on ticketing and pricing entirely to their promoters and management, and at no time had any awareness that dynamic pricing was going to be used".

Applications to join the ballot for the September shows will be opened first to fans who were unsuccessful in the initial sale.

The band added: "Inevitably interest in this tour is so overwhelming that it's impossible to schedule enough shows to fulfil public demand," the band's statement continued. "But this ticket sale strategy will make the process far smoother for fans by reducing the stress and time it takes to obtain one of the hottest tickets of our time."

Councils have called on the government to end the Right to Buy scheme for new council homes. 

One hundred local councils have warned the financial model for council housing finances is "broken", with a £2.2bn "black hole" in councils' dedicated budgets expected by 2028.

The councils have called for a complete overhaul of the Right to Buy scheme introduced by Margaret Thatcher in 1980 that allows council tenants to buy their council homes at reduced rates.

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, who  bought her council house through Right to Buy in 2007 , announced at the end of July the government had started to review increased discounts introduced by the former Conservative government in 2012 and will begin a consultation into the whole scheme this autumn.

Only 4% of homes bought under Right to Buy have been replaced, according to charity Shelter, while an estimated 43% of households living in private rented accommodation and receiving housing benefits are in homes bought under Right to Buy.

Boohoo has caused upset among its loyal customers after cancelling accounts and charging them for returns. 

The online retailer has reportedly started closing some premier accounts due to "unusually high returns activity". 

Earlier this year, it started charging premier customers £1.99 for returns - but many shoppers have complained that they were not informed. 

At the moment, a premier subscription costs £7.99 a year, but it usually costs £12.99. 

Subscribers get unlimited next day delivery, paperless returns and access to exclusive discounts. 

Up until the changes, they were also able to return their items free of charge. 

One X user said she was "disgusted" after Boohoo deactivated her account. 

"Because I order multiple outfits for holidays and night outs or (because your sizes are all over the place) I order two sizes of most things... and because I don't keep everything and send them back, you deactivate my account," she said. 

"I've been a customer for 12 years. Disgusting." 

She wasn't the only one feeling that way... 

Others said they would stop shopping at the retailer altogether. 

The Money team looked through the Premier T&Cs - and it does not mention a limit on the number of returns that can be made, or returns at all. 

But, it does state that the company can terminate accounts at its discretion. 

"We may decide to terminate your Boohoo Premier account and you will be given a prorated refund based on the number of whole months remaining in your membership," it states.

"We will not give any refund for termination related to conduct that we determine, in our discretion, violates these terms or any applicable law, involves fraud or misuse, or is harmful to Boohoo's interests or another user." 

Boohoo isn't the online retailer to make this move. 

Earlier this year, PrettyLittleThing, which is owned by Boohoo, introduced a returns fee and started cancelling accounts that sent back several items. 

Consumer expert Helen Dewdney from The Complaining Cow said there was a growing trend of companies doing this, explaining that returns can be costly for those with small profit margins. 

"If a customer is costing a company more by returning more than they are keeping, then it is perhaps understandable why they are having their account closed," she said. 

But, she noted that where a company has offered unlimited free returns for a fee, without detailing any limits, then this could be considered as "very unfair and misleading".

"Under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 there is a fairness test," she added. 

"For a practice to be unfair under these rules, they must harm, or be likely to harm, the economic interests of the average consumer. 

"It could be considered that paying to have unlimited returns was part of the purchasing decision. Boohoo should be clearer in their terms and conditions as regards what the limit is, and should certainly be refunding the fee to anyone who has had their account closed." 

A spokesperson for Boohoo told Money: "We are committed to providing our customers with easy access to our products and upholding a fair return policy.

"However, like many other online fashion brands, it is important that we balance this with our responsibility to discourage repeat returners, which incur a cost for both the business and the environment."

The Co-op is experiencing its highest-ever levels of crime and abuse, with some staff members losing an eye or miscarrying as a result, one of its directors has told the House of Lords. 

Speaking to the Justice and Home Affairs Committee, Paul Gerrard said crime had risen by 44% across its stores and violence had increased by 35%. 

"That level of crime in our stores is 1,000 incidents every single day," he said.

"That is the highest level we have ever seen, levels of abuse are at the highest level we have ever seen and violence has dipped slightly in 2024, but it still a very high level." 

He suggested that organised criminals are behind the surge in shoplifting, saying people are "stealing to order huge volumes". 

In some cases, he said people had entered with wheelie bins and building bags to load up with stolen goods. 

"If one of my colleagues gets in the way, there will be a violent threat," Mr Gerrard added. 

"There might be a knife, there might be a syringe. I've had colleagues attacked with a medieval mace, we've had colleagues lose their eye, we've had colleagues miscarry.

"We spend money to keep the colleagues safe in the store. If an incident happens, then we take a number of measures."

Co-op has been a leading voice in campaigns against shopworker violence and is one of the funders of Project Pegasus. 

The group supports police forces in identifying the organised crime groups operating in their area. 

English football clubs are being warned they will face "enormous opposition" if they try to introduce dynamic pricing for match tickets - after two top sides in Spain confirmed they were adopting the controversial practice.

Valencia and Celta Vigo are believed to be the only European clubs to have embraced the system for this season's matches.

Although there are no suggestions dynamic pricing will be introduced into the English game, there has been growing concern clubs are vastly hiking prices, depending on the level of opposition.

It also comes after the huge controversy surrounding the sale of tickets for  next year's reunion shows by Oasis  - where dynamic pricing saw tickets worth £148 being sold for £355 within hours of release.

The Football Supporters Association (FSA) warned against "greedy owners in football" trying to "exploit supporter loyalty" in the English leagues.

In a statement, the FSA said: "With impeccable timing after the Oasis fiasco, voices in football have started to float the idea of infecting football with dynamic pricing.

"Never underestimate the potential for the most greedy owners in football to try and import terrible ideas from other industries to exploit supporter loyalty.

"Match-goers are already mobilising against the recent wave of price rises and attacks on concessions. Any underhand increases will be met with enormous opposition."

When you've forked out hard-earned money for a holiday abroad, the last thing you want is to be landed with an expensive phone bill at the end of it.

Brexit brought an end to the guarantee of free roaming for UK residents who visit countries inside the EU – but the good news is some providers still offer free services up to a certain point for travellers in Europe.

Here, we take a look at the UK's major phone providers and what they're offering customers when it comes to roaming across the globe...

Vodafone splits its roaming charges into four different "zones".

For pay monthly customers who took out their contract on or after 11 August 2021, how much you pay depends on which zone you're headed to:

Zone A - Ireland, the Isle of Man, Iceland and Norway - no extra charge

Zone B - Europe and EU member states (49 destinations) - £2.42 a day for customers without the Xtra Euro Roam plan

Zone C - 32 destinations including the US, Australia, Barbados and South Africa - £7.39 a day for customers without the Xtra Global Roam plan

Zone D - 75 destinations from Argentina to Uzbekistan and Vietnam - £7.39 a day

All charges are dependent on customers adhering to the 25GB fair usage limit.

Countries outside zones A-D are deemed "rest of world zones" by Vodafone - these include destinations such as Belize, Nepal and Angola. Data is charged for each megabyte (MB) used, with charges typically £1.20 per MB. 

Those with contracts before 11 August 2021 pay nothing for Zones A and B, and £6 a day for Zones C and D.

Unlike some other major providers, O2 hasn't brought back EU roaming charges for customers using up to 25GB data abroad.

That means both pay monthly and pay-as-you-go customers heading to its Europe Zone (more than 40 destinations) are free to call, text and use data as they would in the UK.

For anyone travelling further afield, the charges depend on what plan you're on.

Customers whose contract includes the O2 Travel Inclusive Zone can roam in 27 destinations outside Europe, including Australia, New Zealand, the US and southern American countries.

If it's not part of your plan, you can purchase a travel bolt-on for £6 a day which allows for data roaming in 63 destinations.

Contract holders with O2 Travel Inclusive Zone Ultimate can roam freely in 75 destinations outside Europe.

Three's Go Roam Europe service lets pay monthly customers use their data allowance in 49 destinations at a cost of £2 a day.

Those using the Go Roam Global service (22 destinations outside Europe) pay £5 a day while Go Roam Global Extra (92 destinations outside Europe) comes at a cost of £7 a day.

The charges apply to customers who took their contracts out on or after 1 October 2021 - there are no charges for customers who were with Three before that.

Three imposes a 12GB fair usage cap for all customers on a monthly contract when roaming abroad and 9GB for those on pay-as-you-go.

Anyone with an EE plan that began before 7 July 2021 will have EU data roaming included.

For newer customers, it costs £2.47 a day to use data roaming while travelling in its European zone, up to the 50GB fair usage limit.

For customers heading abroad to Europe for 11 days or more, it's cheaper to add on EE's Roam Abroad Pass which costs £25 a month (it can be cancelled at anytime, meaning you can scrap it after your holiday if you want to).

Customers heading to Australia, New Zealand, Canada or the US and wanting to use their data can select the Roam Abroad Pass as an add-on.

Alternatively, they can pay £6.74 a day for 500MB of data only in Canada and the US, £8.45 a day for 500MB in nine countries including Australia, India and China, or use 150MB of data for £8.45 a day in 45 other destinations including Brazil, Japan and Jamaica. 

Customers can use their phones abroad in 47 destinations without paying extra roaming charges with BT Mobile's Roam Like Home scheme.

If travelling outside Europe, BT mobile customers can use still use their phones but will need to buy a Mobile Travel Data Pass to access their data.

It costs £6 for 500MB that must be used within 24 hours. It covers 12 countries, including the UAE, US, Australia and Canada.

Giffgaff lets customers roam for no extra charge within the EU and other selected locations, with a 5GB fair usage cap. If this is exceeded, roaming is charged at 10p per MB.

Anyone travelling outside the 37 locations in the EU and beyond will have to add credit to their account to use their phones as normal.

They'll also be charged a rate per minute, text or MB, which varies depending on where you go.

Tesco Mobile

Until 2026, anyone travelling to one of Tesco's 48 Home from Home destinations can use their phone as normal with no extra charge.

Roaming charges apply for travel outside these countries - but Tesco will cap data usage at £40 for anyone who hasn't already put in a safety buffer, to avoid anyone coming home to a shockingly high bill.

Generally, data costs around £5 per MB and texts 40p, but costs for calls can vary.

Sky's Roaming Passport Plus lets customers access their UK allowances for £2 a day in more than 55 popular holiday destinations, including EU countries, the US, Australia and more.

The pass is valid for 24 hours. Unused data can be carried over but the £2 charge still applies.

Anyone heading to other far-away destinations will see out-of-tariff roaming charges apply.

If you've got a phone or SIM-only contract with iD Mobile you can use your UK monthly allowances in 50 destinations worldwide, up to 30GB.

Roaming has to be activated beforehand through your online account or the iD Mobile app.

Lyca Mobile

Anyone with a Lyca Mobile SIM can roam in the EU or use data in India as normal up to the 12GB fair usage limit.

What about e-SIMS?

Standing for "embedded SIM", e-SIMS are virtual SIMS that have been built into most newer devices like phones, tablets and smartwatches.

While perhaps not so useful inside the UK and for short EU trips, they could be a way to avoid those hefty out-of-tariff fees for travel further afield.

As they can be activated without a physical card, it makes them particularly useful for overseas trips as you can easily switch between several different carriers if you need to. 

To use one, you'll need to purchase an e-SIM for the country you're heading to and adjust the settings on your phone to allow it to be used.

There are many different providers offering e-SIM services at varying prices for different destinations, making them difficult to compare.

On a similar theme to our last post... The pension pot needed for basic retirement has risen more than 60% in the last three years, two thinktanks have found. 

This means the average pension pot required has risen from £68,300 in 2020-21 to £107,800 in 2023-24. 

Rising housing, energy, food and transport prices have all contributed to the increase, a study by the Resolution Foundation and Living Wage Foundation suggests. 

Researchers say a person requires an average income of £19,300 a year in retirement to sustain a "basic" standard of living. 

However, this figure differs depending on whether a person owns or rents their home, and if they live alone. 

For example, single home-owning pensioners need  £13,500 annually while pensioner couples that own their home need £20,600. 

At the moment, the full rate of the state pension is £221.20 a week, or £11,502 a year.

The rest of the "basic retirement" fund would need to come from other sources such as a private pension with a balance of £107,800. 

To reach the amount needed in retirement, the research found a person working full-time on the Living Wage (£11.44 an hour) would need to contribute 9% of their earnings a year from the age of 25 to 68.

Arrive on the fourth Saturday of September to take advantage of National Public Lands Day, one of the National Park Service's free admission days.

Oahu is Hawai'i's most-visited island and Waikiki is one of America's most popular beaches , so if you want ample room to spread out on its famous shores, visiting during the fall shoulder season is your best bet. In September, the island sees fewer tourists but still offers hot, dry weather and warm water ideal for swimming and surfing. The discounted rates in September will also make your vacation that much more relaxing, and you'll be able to experience one of Hawai'i's biggest cultural events, the Aloha Festivals.

Situated off the coast of Queensland, Australia, this chain of 74 islands are loved for their postcard-worthy beaches and proximity to the Great Barrier Reef. Base your stay on popular Hamilton Island, which features an array of adults-only resorts, or camp under the stars on Whitsunday Island, home to the popular Whitehaven Beach. Must-do activities in the Whitsundays include lounging on the sand, snorkeling, scuba diving and sailing. Luckily, travelers who visit in September will be treated to low humidity and consistently sunny skies with average temperatures resting between the high 70s and low 80s.

Although September technically falls within this Washington park's shoulder season, travelers will still find plenty to love about an autumn visit to Mount Rainier National Park. Depending on your elevation, average temperatures can range from the mid-50s to the low 70s in September, and the region's beautiful fall colors make it a perfect time for leaf peeping . Take advantage of the pleasant conditions by hiking the popular Skyline Trail or admiring the stunning views of Mount Rainier from Sunrise, the highest point of the park that can be reached by car.

One of the world's most impressive national parks , Guilin and Lijiang River National Park in southern China is downright magical in September. The weather is cool and dry, making it easy to enjoy the park's mist-covered karst mountains and rice terraces, along with other highlights like the Reed Flute Cave and Elephant Trunk Hill. And while you'll surely want to explore on foot, a guided boat cruise down the Li River is no doubt the best way to soak up Guilin's stunning scenery.

Visiting Arizona's Grand Canyon during its peak summer season can be risky (high daytime desert temperatures and steep hikes don't mix well). September not only offers a slightly cooler climate but fewer crowds to contend with now that the kids will be back in school. The park's South Rim, which is usually bustling with tourists in summer, sees fewer visitors come September, making it a great time for hiking traveler-approved paths like the Rim Trail. What's more, destinations like the highly underrated North Rim are still open throughout the month.

The capital of Wales is a beautiful destination year-round, but September's mild temperatures (think: highs sit in the mid-60s) and colorful fall foliage make this an ideal time to plan a trip.
