Additionally, participating in a practicum or internship can be helpful in gaining more practical experience. Here, you’ll get hands-on learning opportunities and gain valuable networking connections.

If you are considering event management in sports, consider pairing your experience or formal education with a sports management certificate. Examples of sports management certifications include the following:

After days of water-quality concerns caused by heavy rains last week, the men's and women's triathlon dove into the Seine River in a moment that Paris city officials praised as proof its years-long plan to clean the waterway had worked.

Paris 2024 said out of the initial three million tickets bought internationally, 18% were from the U.S. That would mean at least 540,000 tickets are in the hands of Americans before you get into the resale market or other means of entry into events.

The ballot is set for the SportsTravel Awards with winners announced at @TEAMSconference in Anaheim! Voting is open through Aug. 19 so let us know who you think is most deserving. The full ballot: https://www.teamsconference.com/sportstravel-awards

It’s iconic design and standing within the Paris landscape has made it a worldwide tourism attraction for more than a century. But in some ways, the Olympics is giving the Eiffel Tower a moment in the spotlight.

6 Factors That Improve Sports Team Travel

The team must work well together in every sport, but who looks after them when they’re not working? As sports become more global in scope, an increasing amount of time is spent in transit; moving between training, matches and tournaments. It’s no longer acceptable to settle for the disorganized, improvising supplier who promise what they can’t achieve. So, what does that look like? What needs to be assessed? What are the ways to improve sports team travel to help your client succeed on and off the field?

6 Factors That Can Improve Sports Team Travel | BCD Sports

Factors that improve travel logistics

Everyone is taking a cut. The travel and logistics supply chain is littered with intermediaries taking commission here, and charging payment there. Domestically you may have some visibility, and that may be acceptable, but multiply the travel program by just a few countries and suddenly you’re in an unmanageable mess. More professional suppliers will bring consistency across continents, and critically provide transparent budgeting with increased buying power with hotels and transportation providers.

Trains, planes, hotels, motels – all the same thing, right? Far from it. With so much at stake when guiding your teams around the world, you need to ensure the people in charge of logistics get everything right, down to the finest detail ( read this behind-the-scenes account by one of our own ). Timing, preferences, routes, reliability; all critical to the successful movement of people. It’s hard enough to organize a family holiday but doing the equivalent for an international tour of sporting professionals is best left to experts: experienced people and reliable technology that ensure everything goes according to plan.

Organization

If those organizing your team travel are stressed, your team will be too. Don’t accept those who are winging it and unsettling your players before the crucial match. Your team’s travel experience should be serene, relaxed, and even enjoyable. Precise planning will lead to calm organizers guiding your people through a stress-free experience.

The world is an unpredictable place at the best of times, but especially so nowadays. Threats are there in transit and in-country, from pickpockets to terrorists. Although your travel planners can’t eliminate the danger completely, they can minimize it. Protect all your assets, from talent to tickets and everything in between.

If the worst does happen, knowing where your people are at any given moment is key. The advent of modern technology enables pinpoint tracking of your people and equipment. Make sure you have the right team and tech in place to trigger a recovery plan and get back on track.

MVPs, VIPs, SVPs – some demand only the best. The challenge is to balance their requirements with the needs of the team, and to deliver at the level of service they expect. Whether it’s for fans, sponsors or press, a proper managed service will ensure that their experience is second to none.

“[In the Round]… were a huge asset to the project team delivering the event. Their expertise in transport marketing communications for major events was plain for all to see. Whether it was designing the creative advertising campaign, developing appropriate messaging for all audiences, preparing supporting collateral, creating and maintaining the web and social media content or managing the many stakeholder relationships, the two finalist clubs and all local transport partners. We are delighted to have delivered a hugely successful event of which Cardiff, Wales and the UK can be proud. We would like to thank In the Round for the significant part they played in the event’s success and would not hesitate in recommending them for other assignments.”

‘Everybody's just so confused': Olympian explains how pole vaulters travel with their poles

"i'm the center of attention when i walk into an airport with the sticks. that's for sure," sweden's mondo duplantis said., by eric mullin • published 3 hours ago • updated 2 hours ago.

Most track and field athletes could easily fit their uniforms and gear in a suitcase to travel to a competition like the 2024 Paris Olympics . But some have massive poles to worry about.

Reigning Olympic pole vault champion Mondo Duplantis detailed to NBC how he gets his 17-foot poles from one place to another. (Here's a hint: it's not easy.)

The Swedish athlete and Lafayette, Louisiana, native said he first has to find flights that are able to store his bag of poles before paying for oversized luggage fees. Then, Duplantis will draw some confused looks as he lugs the poles through the airport.

Fight erupts after France eliminates Argentina in 2024 Olympics

"It's very difficult to travel with them," Duplantis said. "When I'm in the airport, I'm just yelling, 'excuse me!' like the whole time...And everybody's just so confused. They think it might be skis, but (the bag) is like 20-feet long.

"I'm the center of attention when I walk into an airport with the sticks. That's for sure."

Duplantis, 24, won gold in his Olympic debut at the pandemic-delayed 2020 Tokyo Games , beating out U.S. silver medalist Chris Nilsen. And he'll surely be hoping to pick up another gold in Paris before having to begin the trek back home with his poles.

Equestrian at 2024 Paris Olympics: How it works, Team USA stars, what else to know

Portrait of Chris Bumbaca

Here’s what you need to know about equestrian at the 2024 Paris Olympics .

When did equestrian become an Olympic sport?

Although equestrian dates to Ancient Greece, the sport is actually returning to its Olympic birthplace in Paris.

The 1900 Paris Olympics included equestrian with five events at the Place de Breteuil arena. Women first competed in dressage at the 1952 Helsinki Games, and the sport became fully mixed 12 years later.

The 1908 London Games featured only polo. At the 1912 Stockholm Games, the three disciplines — jumping, dressage and eventing — were included on the program and have been since.

2024 Olympic medals: Who is leading the medal count? Follow along as we track the medals for every sport.

How does Olympic equestrian work?

At the Olympic level, equestrian is a mixed-gender sport across three different disciplines.

In jumping, riders and horses compete against the clock while jumping over obstacles; time penalties are added depending on how many obstacles are toppled along the run.

In dressage, a horse and rider perform a choreographed series of movements around the course set to music, and judges evaluate the fluidity and difficulty. Dressage caught the attention of Snoop Dogg and Kevin Hart during the Tokyo Olympics and sparked many online memes.

Eventing combines dressage and jumping with cross country, which consists of running a long course of natural and designed obstacles. Versatility for both horse and rider is the key to eventing success.

On top of competing individually, all three formats feature team elements. Medals are awarded separately and team competitions are held separately.

The setting for equestrian at Paris 2024 has a historic feel, with the competition taking place at the Château de Versailles.

Horses are subject to testing for performance-enhancing substances. All horses must be at least 9 years old.

Top Team USA athletes in equestrian at Paris 2024 Olympics

Boyd Martin is one of the more popular figures in American equestrian. The 44-year-old competes in eventing and is a four-time Olympian. The eventing team finished sixth in Tokyo, while Martin placed 20th individually.

Laura Kraut is also a four-time Olympian on the jumping team. She earned a team gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Games and a team silver medal at the Tokyo Games.

International landscape for equestrian at Paris 2024 Olympics

Sweden, Germany, France and Great Britain tend to put forth strong teams in all three disciplines. The United States and Australia have also fared historically well in equestrian.

Reigning individual jumping gold-medal winner Ben Maher (Great Britain) is working back from a shoulder injury that could have ended his riding career.

Equestrian at the Château de Versailles during Paris 2024 Olympics

Versailles will host Equestrian and modern pentathlon events. A temporary outdoor arena, flanked by several constructed stands, will be set up on the Etoile Royale esplanade at the heart of the palace’s gardens. Jumping and dressage will take place there. The individual and team eventing cross-country section will be held alongside the Grand Canal at Versailles.

Among the dozens of  track and field events , there are three race walks included in the Olympic program: men's 20km, women's 20km and marathon race walk mixed relay.

Confused about how race walking works at the Olympics ? Here's a step-by-step guide:

What are the rules for race walking?

329 medal events. 32 sports. Endless drama. Catch all the action at the Paris Olympics . Sign up for our free Olympics Headlines newsletter.

There are a few major differences between running and race walking beyond the speed.

In race walking, one foot must always be in contact with the ground. A violation of this rule is called "lifting." In addition, rules state that an athlete's advancing leg must remain straight from the point of contact with the ground until the athlete's passes over it.

Judges observe the race and caution competitors if it appears a competitor is breaking the above rules.

In the men's and women's races, three violations during a race leads to a two-minute penalty. In the mixed relay, three violations results in a three-minute penalty, with an additional minute added on for each violation until the seventh, which results in disqualification.

How fast do race walkers go?

They may be walking, but Olympic race walkers aren't taking leisurely strolls.

Brian Daniel Pintado of Ecuador won the men's 20km in 1:18.55, which comes out to an average speed of 9.45 miles per hour (15.21 kilometers per hour).

China's Yang Jiayu won the women's race in 1:25.54 at an average speed of 8.68 miles per hour (13.97 kilometers per hour).

Olympic race walking schedule

The men's and women's race walks were held on Thursday, Aug. 1, and there is a new event set to debut later at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The marathon race walk mixed relay replaces the men's 50km race walk. It features 25 teams of two -- one man and one woman -- with competitors alternating legs of just over 10km.

The new event will be held at the Olympics for the first time on Wednesday, Aug. 7 .

How good is Team USA at race walking?

The U.S. did not field any race walkers in Paris, a first for the country in its Olympic history since the sport was first added to the Olympic program in 1908, but a few Americans have medaled in now-defunct versions of race walking.

Joseph Pearman earned silver in the men's 10km race walk at the 1920 Antwerp Games and Larry Young earned back-to-back 50km bronzes in 1968 and 1972
