Before you could research and book your travel in an instant on the Internet, you needed AAA Travel. The information superhighway has made DIY travel planning extremely easy, but travel agencies including AAA Travel still exist. If you've grown up in the Internet age, you're probably wondering what is AAA Travel?

If you or you're family booked a flight or planned on driving across the country as a child, it's possible you used an AAA service. Whether you needed roadside assistance, a TripTik, or a travel agent to book your trip, it could've been AAA that was there for you.

Today you might not think you need to use a travel agency because they are too expensive, but travel agents can actually be cheaper because they have access to discount rates.

AAA Travel Agency

What is AAA Travel?

AAA Travel --more commonly known as AAA (pronounced "triple A")--is a full-service travel agency that helps you book some of the following travel expenses:

  • AAA flights
  • AAA car rentals
  • Theme park tickets
  • Vacation planning

Like Costco Travel, AAA lets you book travel online without the help of an agent.

Unlike Costco, non-AAA members can at least book flights, hotel rooms, cruises, and rental cars online without having to purchase a membership plan. If you a find a better rate on AAA than directly from the travel provider or another travel booking site like Priceline or Expedia, you can make your reservation with AAA and save a few bucks.

How Much Does AAA Travel Cost?

There is a free and premium version of AAA Travel. Whether or not you need to pay a membership fee depends on which travel services you need.

While membership fees can change at any time, the current membership plans start at $66 per year and cap at $127.

All membership plans include AAA Travel's popular roadside assistance benefit that makes you eligible for free towing, spare tire replacement, jumpstarting a dead battery, and fuel delivery for your personal or rental vehicles. The benefit levels increase as you upgrade to a higher plan, like you can get a free 100-mile tow instead of a 5-mile tow for example.

As an AAA member, you can also get additional travel discounts on the basic travel purchases that non-members that can book too. And, you get full access to the AAA travel agents for in-person service.

When AAA Travel is Free

You can book the following travel purchases for free online:

  • Rental Cars

As a non-member, you won't have assistance from a AAA travel agent and you won't qualify for exclusive member-only discounts. Basically, the booking experience is like using Priceline or Expedia which can offer better deals than booking directly from the carrier or hotel.

When You Need to Pay for AAA Travel

You will need to spring for a membership if you want these travel services:

  • Discounted theme park tickets
  • Roadside assistance
  • Vacation planning help from an AAA travel agent
  • Maps and Tourbooks
  • Additional travel discounts on flights, hotels, cruises, and rental cars

The two biggest reasons to consider joining AAA Travel are for the vacation planning assistance and additional travel discounts.

Is AAA Travel Really Cheaper Than Others?

AAA Travel isn't always cheaper, but we'll show some instances when they can be. And, you don't have to be a member to book all of these travel types.

You will most likely find the best AAA Travel deals for hotels, vacation planning, and discounted theme park and attraction tickets.

There are some member-only specials for the other travel purchases including cruises and rental cars, but you should still compare the prices with other booking sites first to make sure you get the best deal.

Booking a Hotel with AAA Travel

You can search for hotels online and reserve a room as a non-member. There is a field box to enter your AAA number if you have one to be eligible for an additional discount.

AAA Travel Hotel Search

When looking for a room in Nashville, AAA brings up the listings from several different hotel brands. Sponsored listings appear first on the search but that doesn't mean these are the lowest priced rooms. Continue to scroll down and look for rooms with the "AAA Rate" tag above the price as you can save some money booking with AAA Travel instead of directly from the hotel.

Taking the Sheraton Grand Nashville Downtown for an example. Booking a room with AAA costs $212 per night plus fees and taxes. The exact same room costs $232 if you book it directly through the hotel website. That's an instant $20 savings.

If you're an AAA member that waits until you hit the road to book a hotel room, you can use the AAA mobile app to find hotels en route that offer AAA discounts. You can book online or show your membership card at check-in to apply the discount to your nightly rate. This discount can potentially be in addition to the everyday online discount.

Booking a Flight on AAA Travel

As a non-member, you probably won't find any spectacular discounts on AAA Travel. A quick comparison between AAA Travel and Google Flights shows virtually identical results.

If you're already booking your hotel or another travel purchase with AAA, booking your flight with them can save you time. On a positive note, at least you won't pay any third-party booking fees or a higher rate.

Of course, if you want to redeem your airline miles for an award flight, you still need to book directly through the airline.

Vacation Planning

The primary reason you might consider joining AAA Travel, besides the roadside assistance benefits, is for in-person vacation planning assistance. As the largest travel agency in the nation, there's most likely a local AAA office nearby.

If you don't have the time to thoroughly plan a trip or maybe you're traveling out of the country and don't know which resort to stay at or island to visit. Your AAA agent is a professional travel planner, meaning it's their job to schedule the best trip at the best price.

Your agent will research the different travel options and book your flight, hotel rooms, and any prepaid excursions. By bundling your travel, you might even get a discount because of your AAA membership!

Although your Garmin GPS device or cellphone Google Maps app has made it virtually impossible to get lost when driving to a new place, AAA members can still order TripTiks and travel booklets that can be sent in the mail or accessed online.

By ordering a digital version, you can build an interacting TripTik with up to 12 destinations. AAA updates your guide four times a day with the most current fuel prices, AAA-approved hotels and restaurants that offer member-only discounts, and construction delay information. Much of this information is available online for free if you know where to look for it, but having it all in one place with the AAA TripTik can be worth the convenience.

Is AAA Travel Worth It?

Joining AAA Travel can be worth it if you want access to a full-service vacation planner and exclusive travel discounts. While the internet has made it extremely easy to find the lowest travel prices available, using a travel agency like AAA can save you time which can be just as valuable as saving money.

AAA Travel is best for vacation planning assistance, roadside assistance, and booking select travel purchases at a discount. If the savings exceed the annual membership fee, it's worth joining AAA.

  • Passport:  Aside from AAA travel advisors being able to help you with your  passport renewal or applications , AAA members can also take advantage of getting official passport photos taken at local AAA offices, allowing them to tackle the entire process in one place before sending out the application.
  • Driving:  If you plan to drive while on an international holiday, you may need an international driver's permit (IDP), which AAA can provide to members. For as little as $20*, AAA — one of two organizations to offer IDPs — can set you up for the permit and even provide additional discounts if you obtain it through Hertz.
  • Cruises:  As part of their AAA benefits, members can enjoy the  ease of booking cruises  with a AAA travel agent for free. On top of that, AAA travel advisors have insider access to extras provided by the cruise companies themselves, which are only available to professionals. These include free room upgrades and onboard credit.
  • Insurance:  Many people forget or ignore travel insurance when planning a trip — after all, who wants to get bogged down in the potential negative events of a vacation? Insurance can provide immeasurable peace of mind and will make it easier for your advisors to advocate on your behalf if you ever find yourself in an emergency.

And, of course, roadside assistance is still a signature service offered to all AAA members, no matter where they vacation.

Booking Through AAA vs. Travel Agent

Earning My Ears

  • Jun 8, 2006

Hi all. As soon as package prices come out I'd like to book for next spring. I do have a question about using a AAA agent vs. the travel agent we've been using for years. First, I've already been asking my "normal" agent lots of WDW questions and I feel somewhat disloyal booking with someone else. With that said, I would like to get the best discount possible. We've joined AAA and were told by a AAA agent that they get the best deals and that we'd get lots of perks. Truly, I'm not interested in most of the freebies they throw in (a storytelling session, a coupon for Hard Rock, etc.)--I'm just looking for the best price. So, the question really is--is it better to book through AAA direct, or can my own travel agent just use my AAA# to get us discounted prices? Once the packages come out I can do some comparisons, but I'd like to hear what others have experienced since this is our first family trip and I'm obsessed with planning! Thanks.

Dis veteran.

It is my understanding that you can only book a "package" using AAA discount through AAA. If you want room only you can book through disney or AAA

yellowfish78

yellowfish78

Your regular TA can only book AAA room only discounts. Some people find that it's cheaper to build a "package" by adding room only + tickets to get a good price. AAA Travel Agents are able to offer the AAA discount on packages...so if you want a discounted dining plan for example, you'd have to book with an AAA travel agent . The voucher for Planet Hollywood is actually something that everyone gets for booking a package. The extras for AAA include upgrades in car rentals (if one is needed), Diamond parking (which sometimes is closer), the 10-20% discount on the room portion of the package, there's also a AAA Diamond Card which can give you 10-15% off at the World of Disney, spa treatments, Earl of Sandwich, mini golf, regular golf, theme park tours...you kind of have to weigh the pros and cons. January is also Disney Month with AAA and Disney. Normally extra perks are offered during this time; this year it was a free clock or photo frame box at an $75 value. (For the cruise line, it was a higher stateroom credit than what's normally offered). You'll hear good things and bad things about AAA, but you'll also hear them about any agent really...the key is to find a good agent and just stick with them. Ask if they are a College of Disney Knowledge graduate. See if they've taking the Disney Master's Program in FL. Do you know more info than them? That's really what you got to ask. If you don't like the one agent, ask for another. So once rates come out, price compare and go from there!

Thanks.....I guess I'll just price the trip out multiple ways and see who gives me the best deal!

I would definately do whatever you feel comfortable with. It is good to find someone who will give you the best deals but one that is also nice and helpful. Someone who is always looking and trying to get you the best deals because sometimes the best deals aren't available yet. Make sure you are comfortable with who you choose and you can trust them. And as someone posted, they should be a college of disney knowledge graduate. Have A Magical Day!

Is It Cheaper to Book Disney Through a Travel Agent?

From time to time, Disney releases special promotional rates on hotels, dining, tickets, and vacation packages.  Disney travel agents match the deals that Disney offers through its own website.

Disney travel agents get their clients the lowest possible rates. If a better discount comes along after a trip is already booked, then they will go back into the system and apply the new discount to the trip in order to take advantage of the new lower rate.

Let’s investigate why it’s cheaper to book through a Disney travel agent .

Disney World’s Website vs. Disney Travel Agents – Which is Cheaper?

The internet has made it easy to book your own trip and Disney vacations are no exception. You can just go on Disney’s website, sort through the Disney hotels , select your ticket, and make all your arrangements in one sitting. It’s as simple as that, right?

As easy as that may sound, I wouldn’t recommend just winging it like that.

When it comes to Disney World vacations, there’s a lot to consider. It’s a vast resort, with 4 theme parks, 2 water parks, dozens of hotels, and restaurants galore. There are Advanced Dining Reservations, Genie+ selections, Disney After Hours , Club Level at Disney World , stroller rentals , and the list goes on. Disney vacations are much more complicated than meets the eye!

If you want to do Disney properly, I wouldn’t recommend going it alone, especially if it’s your first or second time.

The most magical Disney vacations are well thought out. You should have good touring plans and your reservations should be in place way ahead of time. Otherwise, you won’t know what to do and see, and you won’t be able to just the lines at the most popular rides or eat at the best restaurants.

A Disney travel agent can walk you through every detail of a Disney World vacation. They can give you tips on where to stay, which rides to prioritize, where to dining, the best location to watch the fireworks, and more.

Once you have decided on where you’d like to stay, and which restaurants and theme parks you’d like to book, then your dedicated Disney travel specialist will book every aspect of your resort stay. They are a Godsend!

How Disney Travel Agents can Save you Money

There’s a common misconception when it comes to Disney travel agents.  Let’s clear that up.

It’s not more expensive to book a Disney trip through a travel agent vs. booking it directly with Disney.    In fact, many trips end up being cheaper.

Disney releases a number of travel discounts throughout the year.  This may include the Free Disney Dining promotion , Room Only discounts (often up to 25% off), or the Play, Stay, Dine, and Save discount. We argued that Disney vacation packages ARE worth the money in our last blog post because they combine a hotel stay with either a ticket or dining discount in one convenient and affordable package.

The price you see on Disney’s website will be the price you pay through a Disney travel agent. In other words, the price is the same regardless of where you book it – online, over the phone with Disney, or with a travel agent.

However, there are times when a Disney travel agent can save you money.

For starters, most Disney travel planners don’t charge their clients any fees to plan their vacations. That means you won’t pay a dime in commission for their services.

Next, you can be confident that your travel planner will get you the best discount. It’s their job to keep updated on Disney’s latest promotions. This means that, while you may overlook one, there’s not a chance that they will.  They’ll make sure you get you the best deals out there and you’ll never pay more than you need to.

Another way a Disney travel agent can save you money is in the re-booking process. If you book your Disney vacation package before a bigger and better discount is released, then you can still get to take advantage of the new promotion.

If applicable, your Disney travel agent will go back into the system and apply the newly released discount to your package. You’ll get the lowest rate and you won’t have to do lift a finger because your Disney travel agent handles everything for you. They provide an invaluable service and it’s completely free!

Yes, Disney Travel Agents Are Often Cheaper

So, to sum it up, the deals you find on Disney’s websites are the same ones that your Disney travel specialist will book for you. However, you yourself may overlook some promotions that the travel agent will be privy to.

Your Disney travel specialist will also rebook your trip to take advantage of any lower rates that may arise after your initial booking, and your dedicated specialist will handle all your planning, hotel and ticket bookings, dining reservations , and answer all of your questions and concerns.

Their services are entirely free and, with their help, it’s likely to end up being a cheaper trip.

After you pay the initial $200 booking deposit, your Disney travel specialist can set up a payment plan to pay for the remainder of the trip (layaway).  This means that you can pay down your balance over the time, as long as you’ve paid in full by the final payment deadline (typically 30 days prior to check-in).

Using a dedicated Disney travel agent is a no-brainer!

Why you need to use a travel agent more than ever now.

Travel agent planning vacation with couple

By Elizabeth Harryman and Paul Lasley

January 20, 2022

Nohora Rueda was all set to take her parents and her 8-year-old son, Elijah, to Hawai‘i for his spring break. They were looking forward to staying at an O‘ahu resort, absorbing Hawaiian culture, and enjoying the sand and surf.

“Then the pandemic hit,” says Rueda, a labor-and-delivery nurse, recalling the sudden upending of her plans. But she had booked her vacation through AAA travel advisor Pam Hardin, whose tenacity led to success. “She managed to cancel everything,” Rueda says, “and we got full refunds on absolutely everything—even the excursions.”

That level of service has distinguished travel agents, also known as travel advisors, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“When travel ground to a halt, one silver lining was the new recognition and respect given to professional travel advisors,” says Theresa Norton, editor in chief of Agent at Home , a travel industry publication. “Those who booked with a travel agent had the counsel of a professional who could cancel or rebook reservations, answer questions, and even make last-minute, lightning-fast arrangements to fly their clients home before borders closed.”

In an age when many people book their own travel arrangements online, the COVID-19 crisis has reminded travelers of the value of dealing with a live person. Here are 4 great reasons to use a travel advisor.

1. Travel advisors help you save time

“When people book online, they’re the ones on the phone—sometimes for hours—trying to get a refund,” says AAA travel advisor Kristin Armitage. “If you book with a travel agent, we’re doing that.”

2. Travel advisors help you save money

Because travel advisors build partnerships with hotels, tour companies, and cruise lines, they often can get discounts that are otherwise unavailable, says Norton. “Plus, they can secure perks, such as room upgrades, free breakfasts, and early check-in or late checkout.”

3. Travel advisors can make rebooking easier

When the pandemic forced the cancellation of a Viking  river cruise  for 2 clients, Armitage got them a future cruise credit amounting to more than the original booking. The clients used that to book another Viking cruise.

4. Travel advisors can handle special arrangements

A travel advisor can help with special needs, such as  obtaining a wheelchair , or  inform you of travel health requirements .  “We let you know if visas or immunizations are required,” says Hardin. “Things you might not know if you’re just booking online.”

Using a travel agent also builds relationships. “She feels like family at this point,” Rueda says.

Hardin concurs: “You don’t get the emotion—the joy—from a computer that you get from a real person.”

Paul Lasley and Elizabeth Harryman produce and host two daily radio shows that are broadcast to a million listeners in 167 countries on the American Forces Network and air on their podcast at  OnTravel.com .

Is the Age of the Travel Agent Dead? No. Here's Why.

aaa vs travel agent

In a nutshell, a travel agent provides value by helping consumers cut through the clutter.

They provide travelers with a unique and personalized experience. Working with a AAA travel agent means you get the inside track from someone who has spent years building relationships within the industry. Studies have shown working with a travel agent saves travelers over three hours of time spent planning per trip. Eureka! Now I have time to get a haircut!

Travel agents are known for their ability to put together the impossible—a vacation that fits needs, wants and budgets. There’s the added security of an expert in your corner when things go awry. For example, dealing with cancelled flights, rebooking hotels or making sure you have a plan in case the storm of the century hits. A travel agent acts as your personal advocate if things go wrong or services haven’t met your expectations.

aaa vs travel agent

So, how do you find a good travel agent?

Talk to friends and family! See if they’re working with someone they love. You can also schedule a call or a meeting with .

And when you do meet them, ask questions like:

• What is the agent’s area of expertise? Some agents specialize in Europe or safari, others cruise and the Caribbean.

• What is your personal travel history? Find out how much "boots on the ground" experience this agent has.

• Have you visited my travel destination?

• How much experience do you have booking travel and excursions to this area?

aaa vs travel agent

I know you want to ask: how much is this going to cost?

Using a travel agent can actually help save money. Travel agents’ pay structures vary, but most of their income comes in the form of some base pay + commission—which is paid by vendors, like hotels, airlines or rental car companies. Some travel agents do charge a nominal fee for their services. However, it can often be more than made up in the savings and added value. In the case of AAA, most branches offer free trip planning services to members, as an added benefit of your membership.

You may think an agent who is commissioned by a third party is not working in your interest. On the contrary, it’s that agent’s hard-won relationships with the travel industry that you are benefitting from. Agents receive special access to deals that you can’t find online. In addition to exclusive pricing, this could mean upgrades in a room, a free spa visit, included breakfast or any number of amenities that will be passed down to you, at no extra cost.

aaa vs travel agent

It’s also worth noting that agents wouldn’t survive without repeat business and referrals.

A good agent will work extra-hard to get to know you and learn your travel style. They want to create the trip of your dreams so you’ll want to work with them again (and tell all your friends and family).

aaa vs travel agent

My advice? Consider bringing a travel agent into your life.

The trips we take with our families and friends are becoming too few, and therefore, far more important. When we do all finally manage to find time to get away with one another, it will be wonderful peace of mind to know you are in good hands. All you have to do is enjoy your trip with the ones you love.

Costco travel deals are just one amazing perk to purchasing a Costco membership. But is it the best? Costco Travel and AAA are both popular travel companies that offer different services. Costco Travel offers cheaper prices than AAA, but is it worth the money? In this blog post, we will compare and contrast Costco Travel and AAA to see which one is the better deal for you.

Costco Travel is a membership-based travel company that offers discounts on hotels, rental cars, cruises, and more. AAA is a non-profit organization that offers roadside assistance, insurance, and discounts on hotels and rental cars. They may have cheaper prices than AAA, but you have to be a member to use their services.

Costco Travel : What is it?

They also offer members exclusive pricing on cruises and vacation packages. It is a great way for Costco members to save money on their next vacation. In the following paragraphs, I will go into greater detail on the benefits, disadvantages, and ease of use regarding Costco Travel.

Costco Travel Benefits

Costco Travel offers a variety of services. Get in contact with a Costco Travel agent to plan your next trip. They will find the best travel deals for any budget and destination . Costco Travel also offers a variety of benefits such as exclusive Costco member pricing, no booking fees, and more.

If you’re looking for someone to plan your vacation, Costco Travel may be beneficial to you. However, this is not always the case. Although the Costco Travel deals are great for some people, let’s explore some of the disadvantages of using this service.

Disadvantages of Costco Travel

Costco Travel is a popular option for vacation planning, but it has its drawbacks. One disadvantage is that Costco Travel is not available in all areas. Costco also offers limited services compared to other travel agencies. Costco Travel also has strict cancellation policies, so be sure to read the fine print before booking your trip.

Overall, Costco Travel is a good option for vacation planning if you’re willing to do some research and are flexible with your travel dates and destination. However, if you’re looking for a full-service travel agency, Costco Travel may not be the best option. AAA has better travel agents when it comes to planning.

Costco Travel Ease of Use

We know that Costco Travel is great for those who are looking for Travel deals. However, it does not matter how good the deals are if no one can access them. In this paragraph we will look at their usability.

Costco members can easily find the Costco Travel website by logging in to their Costco accounts. From there, they can search for hotels, rental cars, cruises, and more. You will find a plethora of Costco Travel deals on their site. You can also see details on membership pricing. Costco executive membership

AAA Travel: What is it?

AAA Travel is AAA’s full-service travel agency, offering AAA members a wide range of personal travel planning services. They also provide travel agents that can help AAA members with all aspects of their travel planning. From booking flights and hotels to renting cars and planning activities, they have you covered!

Benefits of AAA Travel

AAA Travel also offers AAA members exclusive discounts on travel expenses, such as airfare, hotel rooms, and rental cars. In addition, AAA Travel provides AAA members with 24/7 support while they are traveling. They can always reach someone if they need assistance.

Whether AAA members are planning a quick getaway or a world tour, AAA Travel is there to make sure everything goes according to plan.

Here’s an overview of the travel deals you can expect with a membership:

  • Car Rentals
  • Vacation Packages

Disadvantages of AAA Travel

Although AAA Travel may offer a variety of services, but that doesn’t mean it’s the right choice for everyone. AAA Travel has its disadvantages, too. For one thing, AAA Travel can be expensive. AAA Travel also charges for some of its services, which can add up if you use them frequently.

Additionally, AAA Travel may not have the best selection of travel options. You might not be able to find the perfect vacation if you’re looking for something specific.

Finally, AAA Travel isn’t always the most reliable; sometimes AAA Travel reservations get canceled or changed without warning. While AAA Travel has its perks, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons before making a decision.

Cost Breakdown of Each

According to Forbes , AAA Travel offers a free service that non-members can use to book flights, hotels, and rental cars without being a member. However, the real perks of AAA Travel come when you purchase a membership.

Costco Travel perks are not free. However, they do offer a wider variety of perks if you are someone who flies often. The cost of an executive membership is relatively cheap if you travel enough.

Let’s break down each travel agency based on its price and benefits, and use that information to decide which company is the more cost-effective option.

aaa travel

A travel agency that not only plans your trip, but also protects it is AAA. AAA Travel is a AAA service that provides members with access to exclusive travel deals and discounts. There are three pricing tiers: AAA Basic, AAA Plus, and AAA Premier. AAA Basic members receive the lowest prices on AAA-rated hotels, cars, and vacation packages.

Members receive the same discounts as Basic members, plus additional perks like early check-in and late checkout at hotels, and free upgrades on car rentals. AAA Premier members receive the same discounts as AAA Plus members, plus even more perks like complimentary breakfast at hotels and free one-way car rental drops.

The cost varies depending on the tier of membership; AAA Basic memberships start at $59 per year, while AAA Premier memberships start at $99 per year. Whether you’re looking for the best deals on hotels, cars, or vacation packages, they have you covered.

aaa travel benefits

Here’s an annual breakdown of membership costs:

Basic Membership : $55

Plus Membership : $97

Premier Membership : $137

The biggest thing to note is that no matter what tier membership you have, all AAA members get discounts on hotels, car rentals, and other travel. The only travel difference between the 3 tiers is that the plus and premier have options to upgrade for RV benefits, which include $500 towards recreational vehicles, motorcycles, and more.

AAA members can also take advantage of travel agents to assist in the various bookings and reservations that take place when preparing for a vacation. This is a fantastic option that is great for those who have a busy schedule or do not want to plan their vacation.

Using AAA for travel bookings is a great option because it’s free for anyone. However, if you’re looking for more roadside protection or travel often and want to take advantage of discounts, it could be worth it to look into a Plus membership through AAA. It all depends on what you’re looking for in a travel agency.

Costco travel deals

Costco Travel

Every Costco member can access their website to book travel plans and save money.

The website offers a variety of services at a fraction of the cost of other travel websites. For example, you can book a hotel room through them for less than half the price of booking the same room through another website. Even AAA Travel!

In addition, they offers discounts on rental cars and activities such as zip-lining and whale watching. Overall, it’s is an affordable option for traveling that provides great benefits for members.

Costco Travel Deals

The price breakdown of an annual membership :

According to Costco , it costs $120 a year to be an Executive Costco member. But don’t let the high price scare you. If you are someone who travels often, especially someone who books flights and hotels often, you may actually save money (and make money) with this membership.

The Executive Costco membership offers an annual 2% reward for those who spend money on any Costco service, including travel. If you are buying multiple plane tickets a year and booking cruises, hotels, or excursions often, you could literally make money just from being a Costco member!

What’s the verdict?

It depends on what you’re looking for.

If you are someone who travels mainly by road (road trips!), an AAA membership could be a great option for you. Everyone knows that AAA is a sure way to grant everyone peace of mind when traveling by road. Here are some of the benefits that come with having an AAA membership:

  • Flat-tire service (all tiers)
  • Battery jumpstart and replacement service (all tiers)
  • Vehicle lock-out service (covers cost based on tier)
  • Theft reward from $500 to $2,000 (depends on tier)
  • Free emergency gas delivery–complimentary (Premier tier)
  • Trip interruption protection up to $1500 (Premier)

…and more!

However, if you are someone who flies or goes on cruises often, Costco travel may be the travel service for you. At a price of only $120 a year with a 2% annual reward, Costco travel is great for those who find themselves spending large amounts of money on travel-related purchases.

Not only that, but also the 2% reward applies to any purchases made from a Costco business. You can make cash-back on groceries, furniture, and travel! Definitely a good deal.

Which is better?

Both travel agencies are great. Depending on what your needs are, either option could work for you. If you are someone who roadtrips more, AAA would probably be the better option. However, if you are someone who flies or goes on cruises more, Costco is the best option for you.

This is because AAA Travel also offers a variety of perks, including discounts on hotels and rental cars. However, AAA’s benefits far outweigh those of Costco’s benefits if you are someone who is on the road a lot.

If you are a frequent flyer, Costco is the better deal because it offers a wider variety of perks and discounts. It all depends on your specific needs. What do you want in a Travel agency?

Nearly 71 Million People Expected to Travel over July 4th Week

This year’s extended independence day forecast exceeds pre-pandemic numbers, sets new record.

aaa vs travel agent

WASHINGTON, DC (June 20, 2024) – AAA projects 70.9 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Independence Day holiday travel period*. For the first time, AAA looked at the entire July 4 th week, plus the Saturday before and the Sunday after the holiday. This year’s projected number of travelers for that time period is a 5% increase compared to 2023 and an 8% increase over 2019.

“With summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We anticipate this July 4 th week will be the busiest ever with an additional 5.7 million people traveling compared to 2019.”

Share of Travelers by Mode pie chart and Number of Travelers by Mode table

AAA projects a record 60.6 million people will travel by car over Independence Day week – that’s an additional 2.8 million travelers compared to last year. This year’s number also surpasses 2019 when 55.3 million people traveled by car over July 4 th week. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Dallas, Denver, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco are the cities displaying the highest rental demand during the holiday week. The busiest pick-up days are projected to be Friday, June 28, Saturday, June 29, and Wednesday, July 3.

Gas prices are lower than last year when the national average was $3.53. Pump prices will likely continue going down leading up to Independence Day.  At that point, they will likely level off and remain relatively stable until after Labor Day, similar to last year.  An important caveat is hurricane season – underway now – which could affect gas prices should a storm negatively impact Gulf Coast oil production and refining centers.

The number of air travelers is also expected to set a new record. AAA projects 5.74 million people will fly to their July 4 th destinations. That’s an increase of nearly 7% compared to last year and a 12% increase over 2019. AAA booking data shows domestic airfare is 2% cheaper this Independence Day week compared to last year, and the average price for a domestic roundtrip ticket is $800. Airports will be packed throughout the week. AAA recommends arriving 2 hours early, reserving parking ahead of time, and traveling with carry-on luggage versus checked bags to save time and money.

More than 4.6 million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. This category is seeing an increase of 9% compared to last year, but this year’s number is shy of 2019’s figure of 4.79 million. Cruising continues its remarkable post-pandemic comeback. This time of year, Alaska cruises are in high demand, making Seattle and Anchorage top domestic destinations. Cruise travelers are also finding deals this summer. With new ships coming onto the market – and going for a premium – some cruise lines have been offering targeted discounts to fill older inventory for remaining cabins.

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says the worst times to travel by car before and on July 4 th are between 2pm and 7pm. Drivers should hit the road in the morning, and travelers returning on Monday, July 8 th should avoid rush hour traffic in the morning and afternoon.

“Drivers in large metro areas can expect the worst traffic delays on Wednesday, July 3 rd , as they leave town, and Sunday, July 7th, as they return,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. “R oad trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal. Travelers should monitor 511 services, local news stations, and traffic apps for up-to-the-minute road conditions.”

Please note that the times listed below are for the time zone in which the metro is located.

For example, Atlanta routes = ET and Los Angeles routes = PT.

  Top Destinations

This July 4 th week, travelers are cooling off in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska – and by the ocean! Seattle, Vancouver, and Anchorage are top destinations because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Beaches in South Florida, Honolulu, Punta Cana, and Barcelona are in high demand. Historical sites in European cities like London, Rome, Dublin, Paris, and Athens are also popular. The top 10 domestic and international destinations below are based on AAA booking data.

Family Road Trip Checklist

With road trips expected to set a new record this July 4 th week, AAA teamed up with Chicco to share safety tips for families with young children.

  • Check car seat fit. Before you hit the road, check your child’s weight and height to ensure they’re in the right seat and mode of use – especially when it comes to transitioning from rear to forward-facing. Children should remain rear-facing as long as possible for better protection of their head, neck, and spine in the event of a crash. If you are unsure which car seat is best for your child, Chicco offers a car seat comparison guide.
  • Double check car seat installation. Even if your car seat is already installed in the car, it’s worth checking everything is safe and secure. An easy at-home way to do this is with the “inch test.” Simply grab the seat at the car seat belt path and pull side to side and front to back. If it moves more than one inch in any direction, uninstall and start over until a secure fit is achieved. For any questions, utilize the car seat manual, QR codes, or online resources like those offered by Chicco.
  • Secure loose items in the car. Take time to organize and clean up your car before hitting the road. Storage organizers that secure to the back of the driver and passenger seats are simple solutions to make sure everything has a spot, especially loose items that can become projectiles in case of a sudden stop.
  • Be prepared for the unexpected. Pack an emergency kit with first-aid supplies, water, snacks, blankets, jumper cables, and flares. Make sure your phone is fully charged – and keep a charger in the car – to call AAA or request roadside assistance digitally if your battery dies, you lock yourself out, or you need a tow.
  • Map your route. Families with young children should plan for frequent and longer stops along the way. Map out your route ahead of time with AAA TripTik and browse hotels, restaurants, and other activities along the way on AAA Trip Canvas.
  • Bring entertainment. Make sure to place toys and books within reach to keep children entertained. If your kids use tablets or other electronics, make sure the devices are fully charged and pre-downloaded before leaving home. Another fun way to get the whole family excited for the road trip is to create a family playlist of everyone’s favorite songs!

Holiday Forecast Methodology

Travel Forecast

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of May 27, 2024.

Because AAA forecasts focus on domestic leisure travel only, comparisons to TSA passenger screening numbers should not be made. TSA data includes all passengers traveling on both domestic and international routes. Additionally, TSA screens passengers each time they enter secured areas of the airport, therefore each one-way trip is counted as a passenger tally. AAA focuses on person-trips, which include the full round-trip travel itinerary. As a result, direct comparisons of AAA forecast volumes and daily TSA screenings represent different factors.

*Independence Day Holiday Travel Period

For this forecast, the Independence Day holiday travel period is defined as the nine-day period from Saturday, June 29 to Sunday, July 7. Historically, the Independence Day holiday period included only one weekend. This is the first year the Independence Day holiday travel period is a longer timeframe with two weekends included.

As homeowner's insurance prices climb, more Americans ask: Is it worth it?

  • The number of American homeowners without insurance has jumped to 12% from 5% in 2019.
  • The spike in uninsured homes is being driven by a dramatic rise in the cost of coverage.
  • Higher premiums are putting a strain on households already struggling to afford life’s staples.

It was 2019 when Anjali Tierra decided that homeowners insurance wasn't worth the price.

The retired high school teacher, 58, took out a policy in late 2018 after purchasing a three-bedroom home nestled in the Tehachapi Mountains of southern California. She considered the insurance affordable at less than $100 a month, and the coverage brought her peace of mind while living in a “very high” fire hazard severity zone.

But the following year, when Tierra’s insurance provider sent her a renewal notice, she learned her monthly payment had jumped to $350 – more than what she was comfortable paying with the $3,500 she gets each month from her pension. She dropped the insurance policy, assuming she would find affordable coverage somewhere else.

Her search turned up empty. She's been without homeowners insurance ever since.

"Every year, usually in the springtime, I will start to do the research again," she said. "I will just randomly choose an insurance company to see if they'll cover me. And since 2019, I've been rejected by every single insurance company, large and small."

Learn more: Best home insurance

Tierra is among a growing number of American homeowners who are “going bare,” or living without homeowners insurance. A recent study from the Insurance Information Institute found 12% of Americans no longer have home insurance, up from 5% in 2019.

It’s the highest level of uninsured homeowners the industry-funded research group has seen, and follows a dramatic spike in the cost of coverage .

“It is a very concerning trend as catastrophe losses continue to escalate,” said Mark Friedlander, director of corporate communications at the Insurance Information Institute. “It is not feasible for most Americans to pay out of pocket for a significant loss to their property.”

What are the risks of not having home insurance?

Dropping insurance isn’t an option for most U.S. homeowners.

Mortgage lenders typically require proof of homeowners insurance – which covers select damages to the house, its contents and other structures on a property. Homeowners who fail to secure coverage can find their lender charging them for “force-placed insurance,” which can be twice as expensive as other insurance policies and protects the lender rather than the homeowner.

But for the roughly 40% of Americans who own their home outright, homeowners insurance may be viewed as a discretionary purchase ‒ even if industry experts say forgoing insurance often isn't worth the risk.

"You're gambling on whether your property is going to sustain a loss," said Tim Zawacki, principal research analyst for insurance at S&P Global Market Intelligence. "And when you look at things like some of these hurricane forecasts that are out there, and data regarding the frequency of severe convective storms, that's a risky bet."

That hasn't stopped some homeowners from opting to “self insure,” or set aside money to save up for out-of-pocket losses that would have gone toward a premium. Others, like Tierra, focus on mitigation efforts to prepare their homes for potential disasters.

Tierra keeps the area near her home clear of any brush and trees and has installed ember-proof vents on her roof. Still, every fire season without insurance puts her on edge.

“This is my nest egg,” she said. “I do everything I can do possibly to protect my pets and to protect my emotional welfare, but it has been emotionally draining.”

The stress levels households are experiencing around the insurance crisis is “unprecedented,” according to California consumer insurance advocate Amy Bach.

“The majority of homeowners’ net worth is tied up in their homes. You can lose most of your net worth in one severe weather event if you don’t have insurance,” she said.

Bach co-founded the consumer advocacy group United Policyholders three decades ago to counter the wealthy and powerful insurance industry. She says she knows people are getting priced out of homeowner’s insurance from her work on the ground in California.

“The premiums people are getting quoted are insane, $12,000, $18,000, $40,000. They can’t get their minds around it or their wallets,” she said.

Why has homeowners insurance gone up so much?

Insurance companies sought to raise homeowners' premiums by more than 11% last year , according to S&P Global Market Intelligence.

Analysts say insurance companies are trying to keep up with years of big losses as inflation and supply chain disruptions pushed up the costs to fix damaged homes. The Insurance Information Institute reports that insurers paid on average $1.10 for every $1 in premium they collected last year.

Is homeowners' insurance required? Why more than 6 million Americans don't have it

Then there’s climate change, which is intensifying extreme weather. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported 28 billion-dollar disaster events last year, a new record in the inflation-adjusted data going back to 1980.

“You have all these factors combining to result in people paying a lot more for the same amount of coverage,” said Zawacki of S&P Global Market Intelligence.

He expects another double-digit rate of growth this year.

Former Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator Craig Fugate said for some mortgage-free homeowners, dropping insurance may not be a bad decision if they have large enough cash reserves. But people tend to underestimate their exposure and the cost to repair.

"It's a risky decision," he said.

Why are Americans losing home insurance?

The higher premiums are putting a strain on households already struggling to afford price increases on life’s staples, from groceries to health care to automobiles , particularly lower-income households that have depleted pandemic-era savings and are running up credit card debit and falling behind on payments.

At the greatest risk are low-income homeowners and homeowners of color who disproportionately go without homeowners insurance, research shows.

The Consumer Federation of America found homeowners who make less than $50,000 a year are twice as likely as the general population to go uninsured. The consumer advocacy group also found that 22% of Native American, 14% of Hispanic and 11% of Black homeowners have no homeowners insurance, leaving them more at risk than white homeowners.

Age is another significant factor. Older Hispanic and Black households are at higher risk of being uninsured. Older homeowners in general are more likely to leave their homes unprotected than younger ones.

“For many families around the country, their house is not only their home, but also their most valuable financial asset,” said Sharon Cornelissen, director of housing at the Consumer Federation of America. “One major storm or fire can turn an uninsured homeowner into an unhoused family or leave them to live in the wreckage of a damaged, unsafe home.”

That’s what happened to James Mercadal.

The 54-year-old inherited his two-bedroom house in New Orleans after his parents died in 2004. Mercadal had lived in the 7th Ward home his entire life, but was forced to temporarily move out after Hurricane Ida hit the city in 2021.

Mercadal said the damage was extensive. The roof, drywall and various furniture needed to be fixed or replaced, the floors had been flooded, and the home was growing mold. In all, he said roughly $38,000 worth of work was needed.

But as a person who is blind and living on a fixed income, Mercadal couldn’t afford the monthly insurance – let alone the repairs.

“I’m interested in getting the insurance (now),” he said. “But with my income being at $900 a month, I don’t think I will be able to afford it.”

Mercadal has received assistance from the disaster relief organization SBP . Now, after a short stint in Houston after the hurricane, he’s back in his home.

In what states is it hard to get homeowners insurance?

Cornelissen of the Consumer Federation of America said this is a nationwide crisis in the making. Higher-risk areas may face higher costs first, but the rest of the country won’t be far behind.

Yes, coastal disasters hurricanes and wildfires are affecting a growing number of people on the coasts. The U.S. Fire Administration estimates that more than 46 million homes valued at $1.3 trillion are at risk for wildfires, and the top 10 growth states in the 2020 U.S. Census were all hurricane-prone. Some insurance providers are even beginning to pull out of states like California and Florida .

But landlocked states are getting hit harder too, with thunderstorms resulting in an estimated $64 billion worth of economic losses last year – nearly double the losses in 2022, according to reinsurer Munich Reinsurance America .

“This is not an issue restricted to coastal states such as California and Florida,” Cornelissen said.

Still, people underestimate the likelihood that severe weather will affect them, according to Insurance Information Institute research.

A third of homeowners reported that they have been impacted by weather in the past five years, a 2023 survey found . Among the survey population of all homeowners, 59% believe their residence will be impacted by weather risks in the next 10 years, but 25% believe that they will never be impacted by weather risks and another 42% believe they will not be impacted in the next five years.

'I have nowhere to go'

Michelle Gradnigo is a homeowner in the fire-scarred foothill town of Paradise north of Sacramento. In 2018, the Camp Fire − the deadliest wildfire in California history − destroyed more than 90% of the homes there.

Her annual tab for homeowner’s insurance was already high – $3,531 a year – but she budgeted for it. Then in January she got her renewal in the mail. Her premium jumped 500% to $19,310. Her monthly mortgage payment doubled overnight to $8,000.

In a panic, she contacted her broker. She was told if she increased her deductible, lowered the estimated cost to rebuild and bundled her car insurance, her premium would drop by several thousand dollars. That wasn’t enough. She had to pull money out of her retirement account and take on credit card debt for a couple of months just to make the higher payments.

More money for less coverage seemed predatory to Gradnigo. Nothing had changed in the wildfire threat level to her home, she says. Most of the trees are long gone. Her home has sprinklers inside and a fire hydrant outside. She says she turned to the state insurance commissioner and to her local representative. No one would help her.

A health care administrator and retired lieutenant colonel in the Army, Gradnigo, 54, had hoped to move away with her 16-year-old son, but now she says she feels stuck. With runaway premiums and insurance companies dropping coverage for homeowners in high-risk areas, she has watched neighbors slash the asking price to sell their homes.

“If I put this house on the market and it really doesn’t sell, I will know that I have nowhere to go,” Gradnigo said. “It’s despair here. No one is helping us and no one is talking about it.”

Gradnigo dropped Farmers Insurance and purchased fire insurance through the Fair Access to Insurance Requirement plan which offers a limited policy as a last resort for California property owners unable to find affordable coverage. She supplements that coverage with a policy to cover other liabilities such as water damage or theft.

Her out-of-pocket expense is now about $12,000 a year, three times what she used to pay. In addition to the higher bill, she says she no longer has the feeling of safety she once had.

“I know it’s just an insurance company. But when you’ve grown up believing your insurance agents are the people you can trust and hearing the commercials and the jingles and then they just do that to you …” she said, trailing off.

Can I negotiate a lower insurance premium?

There are several steps homeowners can take to try to lower their homeowners insurance.

  • Try bundling home insurance with auto insurance or another policy such as pet or life insurance .
  • Raise the policy deductible, or ask if an insurance agent can help identify discounts.
  • Shop around for a policy as soon as you get a nonrenewal notice.
  • Seek out an experienced insurance broker who can access different options.
  • Reduce the risk of your home being damaged or destroyed in a disaster.
