5 Absolute Best Things to Do in Monteverde, Costa Rica
By Author Jurga
Posted on Last updated: April 26, 2024
Monteverde is one of the most unique travel destinations in Costa Rica. Located high in the mountains and literally touching the sky, it’s best known for its cloud forest reserve and an array of activities related to it. From zipline canopy tours and bird-spotting to spectacular vistas and waterfalls, there is so much to experience in Monteverde!
But choosing between the sheer number of things to do in Monteverde can be overwhelming. Especially if you read lists of 28 or 47 ‘best’ things to do in Monteverde and you only have a day or two in the area… Plus, so many places offer very similar activities which makes it even more difficult to decide what is worth your time and money the most.
So in this article, we feature only the VERY BEST things to do in Monteverde . This list is based on our personal experience and all the insights gathered after reading countless travel guides, blogs, internet forums, and Facebook groups.
Before our trip, we spent days (!) researching what to see and do in Monteverde and constantly had a feeling that if we chose one place over the other, we would miss out on something else. No other place in Costa Rica required so much research and nowhere else we had so much FOMO as planning a visit to Monteverde…
In the end, we had a great time here and Monteverde became one of our favorite places in Costa Rica. So I want to save you time and share only our absolute favorite places and activities in Monteverde that we recommend the most. I hope that this guide helps you plan a truly memorable trip without wasting more time researching something than actually doing it.
Before we get to the list of top things to do in Monteverde, here are some things you may want to know:
First, most roads around Monteverde are in really bad condition. From what I understood, they kind of prefer to keep it that way to combat mass tourism. So you will need a 4×4 to reach many of the best attractions in Monteverde. If you don’t have a car, you can easily book tours that include round-trip transfers from Monteverde/Santa Elena accommodations.
Second, Monteverde attractions are very expensive. On the other hand, there is a lot of overlap, so you really don’t need to go ziplining at three different places and the cloud forest is just as impressive everywhere. In other words, you won’t miss much by simply focusing on a few attractions, one per activity type.
TIP: Our best advice is to visit one of the nature reserves, do one canopy zipline tour, and visit the most spectacular waterfalls. In addition, you can opt for 2-3 extra activities such as animal spotting at night or a coffee/chocolate tour, based on your interests, time, and budget.
Below, you can find our selection of the best activities in Monteverde with some tips and information on which ones to choose and why.
Here are the best things to do in Monteverde:
1. El Tigre Waterfalls
Let’s start with my personal favorite place in Monteverde – El Tigre Waterfalls .
El Tigre Waterfalls is a private nature reserve with hiking trails and hanging bridges that give you access to a series of waterfalls. There are 4 big waterfalls and a few smaller ones, and it takes about 2-3 hours to see them all. Depending on the weather, you can also go swimming at the waterfalls.
The scenery on this hike is amazing! Also, the views from their restaurant are nothing short of spectacular (and lunch is included with most tours).
The hike goes mostly downhill (with a few steeper uphill sections) which means that you have to get back up to the starting point. If you are an avid hiker, you can opt to hike, but they also have horses or 4×4 vehicles available to bring you back up the hill (highly recommended since it’s very steep with little to no shade).
Good to know: El Tigre Waterfalls are located a bit outside of town and the road to get there is quite steep and not in the best condition. If you don’t have a 4×4 vehicle, it’s best to book a tour that includes transfers .
Otherwise, you can simply drive there and visit on your own, but make sure to make a reservation online before you go.
TIP: We recommend the all-in experience with a waterfalls hike, a horseback ride, as well as lunch (+ hotel pick-up/drop-off). This is the option we chose and it was a perfect mix of amazing scenery and fun activities, plus good food.
2. Zip-lining Canopy Tours
If there is one activity that is considered a must-do in Monteverde, it’s a zip lining canopy tour . While there are many places in Costa Rica where you can go zip lining, none of them offers the same experience as the cloud forest of Monteverde. You are literally flying through the clouds here!
When I was writing an article about the best, bucket list experiences in Costa Rica , my family voted zip lining in Monteverde as #1. Before the trip, I wasn’t even sure if I wanted/dared to go and one of our children is afraid of heights… But we all did it and we all LOVED it.
The difficult part for us was deciding where to go zip lining in Monteverde . This is where I spent hours and hours researching and comparing different options.
The number of zip lines is different, their length, the scenery… Plus, some places include Superman and Tarzan experiences while others charge extra for these thrills. Furthermore, most places where you can go zip-lining also offer other experiences such as a treetop walk on hanging bridges (with or without a guide) etc.
Our choice: After all the research, we booked this jungle zip line tour at 100% Aventura . We chose this experience because it offered the best price/quality ratio for zip lining, including a Superman ride, and Tarzan swing.
Below, you can read a bit more about other options we considered, with some explanation of what they offer.
In addition to zip-lining at 100% Aventura , there are several other good places where you can also have a similar experience. Here you can find some additional info on the most popular options:
- Selvatura Park offers stunning scenery and all kinds of experiences (including sloths, butterflies, reptiles, etc.) and not just zip-lining. We visited here for their amazing hanging bridges. Purely for zip-lining, it’s more expensive than 100% Aventura and you have to pay extra for a Superman ride. On their website , you can find all the different tour combinations they offer (it’s overwhelming). On Viator , you can also book some of their most popular combo tours that include hotel transfers.
- Treetopia is somewhat similar to Selvatura but is located at a lower elevation. It stands out from the other places with its mountain gondola ride. This highly-rated combo tour includes the Sky Tram (gondola), Sky Trek (hanging bridges), and zip-lining, as well as hotel transfers. For more options, see their website.
- Extremo Park is best for those looking for a more extreme zip lining. With 16 ziplines, including a Tarzan swing, and two Superman rides, it’s the best-value option for the biggest thrill seekers. This tour includes all of the experiences offering great value.
3. Cloud Forest Nature Reserves & Treetop Walks
A cloud forest is what makes Monteverde unique, so no visit would be complete without a treetop walk in the clouds . In all honesty, whether you will actually walk in the clouds or not will depend on the weather and on the exact place you visit (= its elevation).
But the ecosystem of a cloud forest is so different than in the rain forests that you will visit at lower elevations all over Costa Rica. So it’s well worth seeing it. That said, you don’t have to visit five different places in order to enjoy it.
There are several nature reserves that you can visit in Monteverde. Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve is the ‘official’ park that was established to preserve the cloud forest and focuses on biodiversity research and education. This park has several hiking trails and one suspension bridge and is quite budget-friendly for Monteverde standards. However, if you want to see birds and other wildlife, do yourself a favor and go with a guide (this applies to all nature reserves).
Good to know: They only allow 250 people inside the park at any given time. So you have to reserve a time slot on their website or be prepared to wait (it can be a few minutes or an hour, and in the high season even longer). Plus, the parking lot is about 0.6 miles (1 km) away from the entrance, so you need to account for extra time to walk or take a shuttle to the entrance.
Alternatively, you can also visit one of the smaller reserves that border the cloud forest . For example, Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve, Curi-Cancha Reserve, or the earlier-mentioned private attraction parks like Selvatura Park or Treetopia.
Our choice: Based on (way too many) hours of research and recommendations from the locals, we chose the treetop walk in Selvatura . The main reason for this choice was the scenery, higher elevation, and the fact that they have 8 hanging bridges. Here, we could literally walk in the clouds, and that was what we were looking for. We also saw quite some birds.
As already mentioned, Selvatura also offers ziplining, plus a sloth sanctuary, butterfly garden, reptiles, etc. So if your time in Monteverde is limited and you want to see as much as possible in one place, you can also simply book one of their combo deals .
4. Night Tours
No trip to Costa Rica would be complete without doing at least one night tour and seeing its nocturnal animals. You will find night tours all over the country, also in Monteverde.
Even if you do a night tour in Manuel Antonio or La Fortuna , we highly recommend a night tour in Monteverde as well. This is because of the difference in altitude, meaning you can see different types of animals in Monteverde.
You can expect to spot tarantulas, scorpions, different types of frogs, snakes, and insects. Monteverde is also home to nocturnal animals like kinkajous, olingos, armadillos, etc. You may also see some birds, like toucans or owls.
Good to know: The sun sets quite early in Costa Rica, so night tours usually have two starting times – one around 6 pm and one around 8 pm.
There are several well-rated night tours in Monteverde and they are all quite similar. Below, you can find more info about the best options and the one we chose.
Our experience: We opted for this night tour at Wildlife Refuge Monteverde . It’s a bit more expensive because it doesn’t include transfers and a private reserve entry fee which you have to pay on the spot. But they limit the number of people to 6 per group and so by booking it for our family of 5 we got a private experience at a much lower price this way.
At the moment of writing, this Kinkajou Forest Night Walking Tour offers the best value for your money for group tours. Their group sizes are capped at 8 people.
It’s always a matter of luck of which animals you get to see, but night tours are always great fun. Our teenagers had a great time as well. We saw so many interesting and unique creatures and made great memories. Highly recommended!
5. Coffee and Chocolate Tours
When looking for things to do in Monteverde, you will stumble upon many other attractions. One more activity that we recommend considering is a coffee and/or chocolate tour.
The Monteverde area has several coffee plantations so you can find several places that offer coffee tours . Please note that some tours are indeed only about coffee!
The most famous of them all is Don Juan Tours Monteverde. They offer two different 3-in-1 tours: a coffee + chocolate + sugar cane tour (during the day) or a coffee + chocolate + night animal-watching tour (in the evening).
If your time in Monteverde is limited, you may want to consider this coffee/chocolate/night tour instead of ‘a regular’ night tour.
Our experience: We opted for the daytime tour and it was very interesting and educational. We learned about the process of making chocolate and even made some of it ourselves – from cocoa beans to actual chocolate. Afterward, we could squeeze sugar cane and try an amazing lemonade our guide made for us. And finally, we learned about coffee and different types of beans and could drink as much locally brewed coffee as we wanted.
They also have a big gift shop if you want to buy some locally-made coffee, chocolate, or souvenirs.
We did this tour with our teenagers and they thoroughly enjoyed it. It wasn’t their favorite activity in Monteverde, but it’s difficult to compete with zip-lining or spotting tarantulas at night ;).
Good to know: If you don’t have a car, you can book the same tour with transportation included .
This sums up our favorite things to do in Monteverde.
In addition, you may want to know that the little towns of Monteverde and Santa Elena are quite nice as well. You will find hip art galleries, cozy cafes, and tons of good restaurants, some with stunning views.
And yes, there is a lot more to do in Monteverde than the most popular places and attractions mentioned in this guide. But if this is your first visit and you only have a day or two, this guide should help you experience the very best that Monteverde has to offer.
Have a great trip!

Monteverde night hike.
We went on an incredible Monteverde night hike with our guide and spotted a ton of amazing species – red-eyed tree frogs, sloths (with baby!), and two different species of viper. Our guide was very knowledgeable and my girlfriend and I had an overall fantastic time.

The provincial capital of Colón, beside the canal's Atlantic entrance, is named for the Spanish-language surname of Christopher Columbus, though the Americans called it Aspinwall in the 19th century.. The city was founded in 1850 by Americans working on the Panama railroad and named Aspinwall for one of the railway engineers. Following completion in 1855, Colon gained in importance, which was furthered by the plans for an isthmian canal. During the time of the French canal attempt, a fire in 1885 burned the city nearly to the ground and left thousands of people homeless. Colon was rebuilt in the architectural style then popular in France. Buildings from that era plus the ones constructed by Americans between 1904 and 1914 are still in use today, although the majority is on the verge of collapse. In addition to its importance as a port, Colon boasts the world’s second largest duty-free zone, known as Zona Libre, which is contained in a huge fortress like, walled-off area with giant international stores. However, most of the merchandise is sold in bulk to commercial businesses throughout the country.

Quepos allows tourists to experience a once in a lifetime nature experience in Manuel Antonio National Park without leaving any of the familiar amenities behind. The close proximity of the park, located just 4.3 miles (7 km) to the south, and a wide array of services makes Quepos the perfect place to visit for those who wish to explore this enchanting area. The amenities available include everything from banks, restaurants, hotels, gift shops, bakeries, bars, a hospital, supermarket and even a post office. The area was once dependent on banana plantations which used to line the surrounding area. After disease infiltrated the harvest, interest transferred to African Palms as the prominent crop. Now, tourism has deemed itself the major economic factor, contributing to just about everything in the area. Quepos lures in many tourists for its fantastic sport fishing. In fact, some have come solely to participate in this world class experience and have never left, but besides sport fishing, many other activities are available. Exploring this maze of wetlands by boat is amazing but not the only way to see crocodiles, monkeys, herons, raccoons and more. This small paradise has the perfect balance between nature and the comfort and facilities someone might need.

Johnny was late did not even apologise for his delay. We had to pay extra admission fee which was not included. His attitude was very casual and was hardly trying to find birds just talking about other things .The guides at the reserve are really good and I saw them taking good pictures with our cameras and really looking for birds and show many more birds than we saw which was only 2 .Extremely disappointed and despite asking Trip advisor for partial refund didn’t receive any reply. - T9892PLjohnm 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Johnny was a fantastic guide and his tour was the highlight of our trip! Johnny was a fantastic guide, with a great sense of humour. We enjoyed both his jokes and excellent knowledge of the animals we were viewing. He took the time to be patient with the younger children in our group; ensuring their experience was as great as ours. He worked hard to find the sloths, snakes and spiders; that our group was most interested in viewing. So far, it’s been the highlight of our trip! Read more Written 12 March 2024
- Tracy M 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Recommend! Very good tour! Rafael, not Johnny, guided us. He was enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and eager for us to have an excellent experience! His English is better than he thinks, btw. There were a few issues before the tour (price changed, Johnny was injured at the last minute,, etc), but Johnny was quick to resolve them all and so very friendly! We saw 19 bird species (no quetzal, but that’s birding…wildlife is not predictable; and it’s a great reason to come back!). Read more Written 8 March 2024
- V909BZdenisea 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointing company but Curi-Cancha reserve is great Nobody turned up to pick us up as arranged. After several phone calls to the company, a taxi picked us up and dropped us at the reserve entrance. We had to pay the entrance fee again as Johnny was not there to confirm we had already paid. No guide was waiting for us. The staff at the reserve said that ‘Johnny Loves Nature’ are known to them as he is unreliable and often late. Another guide eventually turned up (now nearly 2-hours late) and we did get a guided walk around Curi-Cancha. This was very disappointing as we had read good reviews snout Johnny. The guide was really nice but not very knowledgeable. Thanks to another guide we met in the reserve, we were lucky enough to see a female Quetzal. Next time, we will book direct with the reserve and avoid using a company like this. Our entrance fee has never been refunded 😕 Read more Written 2 March 2024

Our group only had 2 people, but our guide Darnel did a great job spotting many interesting wildlife, the highlight for me being an armadillo. He was very knowledgeable about the local fauna and flora, and just the experience of all the sounds and sights at night were something to behold. Monteverde Itinerary: How to Spend 2 Days in Monteverde, Costa Rica
Monteverde, Costa Rica is home to incredibly lush jungles and rainforests. The town of Monteverde, which translates to “green mountain,” is an excellent example of Costa Rica’s impressive biodiversity. Found in northern Costa Rica, Monteverde is tucked away in the Cordillera de Tilaran mountain range, only a few hours from the capital of San Jose. If you’re looking for a fun and unique Costa Rican experience, add Monteverde to your itinerary.
This beautiful town is known for its stunning scenery and diverse wildlife, including a massive Cloud Forest, making the area a popular hub for ecotourism. From hiking to bird-watching, and from waterfalls to canopy tops, Monteverde is a perfect destination for those who love nature and adventure. This 2-day Monteverde itinerary will show you how to spend two days in this one-of-a-kind oasis.
Table of Contents
Is Monteverde Worth the Trip?
In short, Monteverde is worth the trip and a must-visit location for your Costa Rica itinerary . There’s something for you in this mountainside town, from ziplining and nature walks to coffee plantations and horseback riding. A 2.5-hour drive northwest of the country’s capital of San Jose, Monteverde is an excellent destination, even for a short trip. If you can only spare two or three days to explore Monteverde, you’ll be glad you took the time.
How Many Days Do You Need in Monteverde?
With so many adventurous activities to see and do in Monteverde, it can feel overwhelming to figure out how long you want to stay in the area. I recommend at least two days in Monteverde to experience the best of this nature surrounded town. Planning a three-day trip will allow you to see even more of Monteverde’s incredible sights, but two days will work.
When to Visit Monteverde, Costa Rica
With how many jungles and rainforests you can find throughout Costa Rica, it should be no surprise that the country is prone to rainy weather. The rainy season in Costa Rica typically runs from May to November and can lead to trails and roads in the area being closed due to flooding. The best time to visit Monteverde is during the dry season, which generally occurs from November to May. My visit to Monteverde was in late June, and it rained off and on, but I had rain gear and didn’t let it ruin the trip.
How to Get to Monteverde from San Jose, Costa Rica
To get from San Jose to Monteverde, you can take a minivan, a public bus, a private transfer, a taxi, or drive a rental car. Getting to Monteverde will take 2.5 – 5.5 hours, depending on your method of transportation.
Taking a public bus is the cheapest transportation mode but takes the longest transport time. Taking a minivan, private shuttle, taxi, or driving a rental car will cost more but save you time. Choose the form of transportation you prefer and fits your budget, and plan your way to and from Monteverde ahead so you can plan your Monteverde itinerary accordingly.
During my visit to Monteverde, we drove a rental car. Renting a car gave us freedom in our schedule and allowed us the ability to detour to see other things along the way. With many winding dirt roads along the way, you will want to drive a 4×4 to reach Monteverde. To learn car rental tips for Costa Rica, read my guide to Renting a Car in Costa Rica .
How to Get to Monteverde from Liberia, Costa Rica
To get from Liberia to Monteverde, you can take a public bus, a private transfer, a minivan, a taxi, or rent a car to drive. Getting to Monteverde from Liberia will take 2.5 – 3.5 hours, depending on your method of transportation.
2-Days in Monteverde Itinerary
This itinerary for how to spend two days in Monteverde will highlight the best activities and sights in the area.
Monteverde Itinerary – Day 1
Arrive the night before to use this day as your first full day in Monteverde. Get ready for some adventure today.
Zipline Through the Cloud Forest
To start your time in Monteverde, I highly recommend embarking on a ziplining adventure. Ziplining is one of the most popular activities in Monteverde, and for good reason. Going ziplining is a fantastic way to see the area from above, which is hard to experience otherwise. While ziplining, you’ll get sweeping views of the cloud forest and soar through the jungle canopy.
Multiple companies offer ziplining experiences, so take the time to research a couple and see which zipline company fits your budget and the type of experience you desire. During my visit, zipping through the trees and across the valley was a highlight of my Monteverde trip. To learn more about ziplining in the cloud forest and my experience, read my guide to Ziplining in Monteverde, Costa Rica .
After a full day of exploring the cloud forest from above, I suggest ending your first day in Monteverde with a guided night hike.
Guided Night Hike
Night hiking in Monteverde, Costa Rica, offers you the unique experience of exploring the rainforest after dark. There are typically fewer crowds during a night hike, and you have a great chance of spotting some local wildlife. Animals such as monkeys, snakes, and all kinds of tropical birds and insects call the Monteverde area home, and a guided night hike is a great way to encounter these animals in their natural habitat. During my night hike, I saw many tropical birds, snakes, and a tarantula, all at a comfortable distance.
Monteverde Itinerary – Day 2
Today is day two and the last day of this 2-day Monteverde itinerary.
Indulge in Local Costa Rican Coffee and Hot Chocolate
A Monteverde itinerary would not be complete without taking some time to sample the local hot chocolate and coffee offerings. Costa Rica is famous for its coffee and chocolate production, and Monteverde is an excellent place to sample some local varieties.
There are numerous coffee and cocoa plantations throughout Costa Rica, and some in the Monteverde area offer tours. Take a coffee/cocoa tour to learn about their history in Costa Rica while tasting some of their delicious drinks. Many restaurants in Monteverde also serve local hot chocolate and coffee, which is a convenient option if you don’t want to embark on a full-blown tour. During my time in Costa Rica, I did not have time for a tour, but I went to Choco Cafe twice and enjoyed some delicious hot chocolate.
Climb The Tree
For the last activity on this 2-day Monteverde itinerary, I recommend visiting The Tree. The Tree is a Ficus tree, also known as a Strangler Fig, a general term for tropical ficus trees that attach to a host tree and usually “strangle” it to its death. After the host tree dies, the Strangler Fig is often left standing with a hollowed-out appearance. The Tree in Monteverde is an excellent example of this phenomenon, and you can climb up it. You can climb to the top of the forest canopy if you dare.
The Tree is easy to find, just off the main Monteverde Cloud Forest road. After a quick walk through the forest, you’ll soon discover the towering hollow tree, which is very distinctive from all the other trees surrounding it. During my visit to the tree, I climbed up a bit, but the others with whom I visited the tree, climbed up to the forest canopy. It was so cool!
Finished this 2-Day Monteverde itinerary early? Here are more ideas of what to do:
Other Things to Do in Monteverde

Where to Eat in Monteverde
Monteverde is full of delicious and unique restaurants and cafes; these three options are some of the best places to eat during your trip.
Tree House Restaurante
For a unique dining experience in downtown Santa Elena, Monteverde, visit Tree House Restaurante . Built around a massive tree, this fun restaurant is known for its cocktails and atmosphere, including live music. The menu at Tree House Restaurante contains a good assortment of food types, including pizza, pasta, seafood and chicken dishes.
If you’re not up for a full meal, Tree House Restaurante is also a great spot to grab a drink. During my visit, I had a milkshake and dinner, and the vibe of the Tree restaurant was unforgettable. It was my first dining in a tree house.
Restaurante Sabor Tico
Restaurante Sabor Tico is a popular restaurant serving traditional Costa Rican dishes at a great price. This restaurant is also known for its fresh fruit juices, which are refreshing after a long day of exploring Monteverde.
Choco Cafe Restaurant and Coffee House
If you’re looking for a casual dining experience, Choco Cafe Restaurant and Coffee House is a great option. With their menu focusing on coffee and cocoa, Choco Cafe offers fresh, locally-sourced dishes like beef tenderloin and plantains, a classic component in many Costa Rican meals. Choco Cafe is perfect for grabbing a quick bite to eat and offers vegetarian options.
Monteverde is a beautiful area offering some incredibly unique sights and experiences, making it a perfect addition to your trip to Costa Rica. This lush, green region is home to some of the most stunning scenery in Central America and offers so many things to do. Looking to do a night tour in Monteverde? Well, you’ve come to the right place! As a former Costa Rica local and regular visitor to Monteverde, I’ve done my fair share of night tours all over Costa Rica.
In fact, they are one of my favorite ways to see the jungle because what comes out after dark, will truly blow your mind away!
Because I’ve done so many night tours, I know what makes a fantastic tour. It’s not just about where you go but how good your guide is at finding many easy-to-miss critters such as spiders, snakes, frogs, and insects!
Below I’ve done the hard work of reviewing the 5 best night tours in Monteverde, including suggesting my favorite tour and why you should add it to your itinerary!
Quick Pick: Our Top Choice for a Night Tour in Monteverde
Our personal FAVORITE night tour in Monteverde is this Night Walk with coffee and chocolate tour .
Not only was the night tour super interesting, but the information provided was amazing – we loved our guide! We did this tour with a friend of ours, and she loved it as much as we did too.
You can book the exact same tour that we did and LOVED online here with free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour !
The BEST Night Tours in Monteverde
1. monteverde coffee, chocolate, and night tour (best combo tour).
Not only is the Monteverde area home to the cloud forest, but it is also the ideal conditions for coffee and chocolate production. This Coffee, Chocolate, and Night Tour might be my favorite tour we did on this list because you get to experience it all in one day!
We met at the tour office in Santa Elena, which is actually a huge coffee and chocolate farm! It was so easy to get to and convenient.
Here, we got one of the best coffee and chocolate tours in Monteverde as we walked through the entire production process of these two important (and delicious) exports. The whole area is beautiful, and it was insightful to see the process from beginning to end.
The tour then headed into the Santa Elena reserve, where your guide will help spot animals and give lots of information about these nocturnal creatures.
What we love about this tour is it is conveniently located in Santa Elena, and you get to see more than other tours. The guides were very accommodating and executed to share their passion for farming and the biodiversity of the area. This tour gives you a good look at what makes Monteverde so unique!
This 2.5-hour tour can be booked online here for $58 USD. Be sure to reserve your spot before it fills up!
2. 2-Hour Night Tour in Monteverde (the cheapest tour!)
As I found out on this tour, as the sun sets, the cloud forest starts to get more active! This is the best time to begin a night tour. 80% of the animals in the Monteverde cloud forest are nocturnal, so this specific tour is a great way to see wildlife and the forest in its lively state.
Our tour departed at 6 pm, which is the perfect time to begin seeing animals. It only accommodates up to 8 travelers (which we loved), making it for a small group experience where you are able to ask questions and learn about the animals and area!
The highlight of this tour for us was the naturalist guides who have an eye for wildlife – seriously, I wouldn’t have found a thing without them! They always seem to spot insects and critters hidden in the bushes and are able to point them out! You might catch a glimpse of sloths, tree frogs, bats, snakes, and more.
This tour also offered us roundtrip transportation from our hotel in the Monteverde area. Although we often have a rental car, we try to avoid driving at night in Costa Rica. I found the walk on the tour rather easy and it’s suitable for most travelers as long as you can walk around a kilometer.
Hot tip – bring warm clothes even if they are warm during the day. The cloud forest can get cool as the sun sets.
This tour can be reserved online here for only $33 USD per person, and they offer discounts for seniors and children. It is the most affordable of all of the night tours in Monteverde, so it’s a great pick for those on a limited budget!
3. Day and Night Tour Combo in Monteverde (most in-depth tour!)
Seeing the cloud forest during the day is very different than at night, so we love this day-and-night combo tour ! Not only does it give you a whole day of exploration, but it also allows you to experience the area in both ways.
Your tour will start in the afternoon where you will get to choose to visit the Monteverde Reserve, Curi Cancha Reserve, or SkyWalk bridges . Each of these places has tons of wildlife and unique beauty to the area, so you can’t go wrong either way!
Once the sun goes down, you will head into the cloud forest for a natural history walking tour and to spot some animals.
My favorite part of this tour is that it’s completely private. It is just you and your group, plus the guide so you can go at your own pace, get one on one time with the expert, and really tailor it for you!
This tour includes roundtrip transportation from your accommodation, entrance fees, and authentic Costa Rican snacks, which are always refreshing and delicious. This tour lasts about six hours, so you really get to see a lot during that time! It can be booked online here for $238 USD.
4. 2.5-Hour Monteverde Cloud Forest Night Walk (best reviews!)
The Monteverde cloud forest is known as “one of the 7 wonders of Costa Rica”, especially at night! This two-hour Cloud Forest Night Walk tour gives you a great look into this unique ecosystem.
This tour begins by picking you up from your hotel in Monteverde or Santa Elena. You will then head into the Monteverde cloud forest with your expert guide to begin the nighttime trek!
The forest becomes alive at night, making this tour a truly unique experience. Your guide will lead the group to spot all sorts of nocturnal animals, such as raccoons, tarantulas, sloths, olingos, and kinkajous. Many of these critters are local to Costa Rica, so spotting them can only happen here. It is honestly impressive how well the guides know the area and can find tiny insects in the dark jungle!
This tour accommodates up to 15 travelers, which is enough to still feel small, but also gives you the chance to make new friends and share in this incredible experience. It is open to all ages of travelers. It isn’t a strenuous trek, but it is about a two-hour walk, so be sure to wear comfy and warm clothing!
This tour can be reserved online here for $42 USD per person.

5. Monteverde Night Tour at the Monteverde Wildlife Refugee (the original night tour in the area!)
Here is another great night tour that takes you into the nighttime wonders of the cloud forest. You’ll be traveling with a certified tour guide who will share all their knowledge of the nocturnal animals and the biodiversity of the forest.
This tour gives a little more flexibility, as you can choose to depart at 6 pm or 8 pm. Each tour accommodates 10 people, keeping it nice and small so you can really get to know the guide and the area. I personally love small tours, as I feel like I get to ask questions and experience the area in an intimate way!
You will meet your guide at the Monteverde Wildlife Refuge (one of the best wildlife rescue centers in Costa Rica !), which is a 55-acre property dedicated to preserving the biodiversity of the cloud forest. It is home to a variety of bird species, insects, reptiles, and mammals. This location is also one of the first organizations to start night tours! They are experts, to say the least.
You’ll spend two hours exploring the protected area, enjoying the environment, and learning a lot along the way! This tour includes your guide and entrance fees. It is open to travelers ages 5 and older and can be booked online here for $45 USD.

Other Things to do while You’re in Monteverde
- Birdwatching – Costa Rica is home to more than 900 types of birds . There are a couple of tours I recommend, including this specific tour , which involves four hours of birdwatching, typically starting in the early morning.
- Go ziplining – Ziplining is easily a top adventure activity in Monteverde. This ziplining tour has it all ! The three-hour tour includes the Superman zipline, which is the longest and highest zipline in Costa Rica and all of Latin America!
- Selvatura Park – Selvatura Park is a nature and adventure park located inside 850 acres of protected rainforest. This park has a network of hanging bridges above the tree canopy that give you incredible aerial views of the rainforest. Get the chance to explore all the bridges and the surrounding trail with the Selvatura Park Hanging Bridge Tour . This gives you two hours to explore and enjoy the forest from unique viewpoints.
- Go bungy jumping – Bungy jumping is one of the fun Monteverde attractions you have to try … if you’re brave enough! The Extreme Bungee Jumping in Monteverde Tour has a daring jump from over 460 feet (140 meters). That’s the highest in Costa Rica and all of Central America!
- Horseback riding – This is a great way to give your feet a break and explore the Monteverde Cloud Forest on horseback! This Monteverde Cloud Forest horseback riding tour lets you cover a lot of ground as you trek through the farmland and surrounding landscape in Monteverde. Keep an eye out for toucans, parrots, monkeys, and other critters as you experience the rural side of Costa Rica, far from any crowds or traffic.
Where to Stay in Monteverde, Costa Rica
Monteverde may be a small tourist town but there are a surprisingly large amount of great hotels in all budget ranges.
Selina Monteverde – $
If you’re budget traveler or backpacker, there are lots of nice hostels in Monteverde. If you like modern features and outstanding facilities, Selina Monteverde is the best option. The hostel is beautiful, has great reviews, and lots of activities including yoga.
The only downside is Selina is a high-end backpacker hostel. Prices begin at $97 USD for a one-night stay. You can book Selina on Booking.com or here on Hostelworld .
Camino Verde B&B Monteverde – $$
For those well past their backpacking days who can spend a little more, I love Camino Verde B&B Monteverde Costa Rica . This boutique hotel has beautiful rooms, deck with magnificent views, and includes breakfast. It’s a comfortable hotel that comes at a great price.
Rates begin at $176 USD/night. You can check availability and book a room online here .
Chira Glamping Monteverde – $$$
If you’re a luxury traveler I highly suggest choosing what we call a “destination hotel”. These hotels are an attraction in themselves because of the unique experience they offer. In Monteverde one of the best is Chira Glamping Monteverde which offers luxury camping with the option to have your own private hottub surrounded by nature.
The view from the property is incredible! Rates begin at $375 USD/night. You can check availability and book a spot online on Booking.com .
Getting Around Costa Rica
How you choose to get around Costa Rica is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your holiday here! How you do it depends on your budget, travel style, and comfort level.
Renting a Car
Without a doubt, the number one way to explore Costa Rica is in a rental car. We book rental cars on the Discover Cars website as we have had good experiences with them in the past.
One of the things you need to watch for when renting a car in Costa Rica is the mandatory insurance that the government requires you to have. There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book.
Thankfully, on Discover Cars it’s easy to tell apart the companies that include the mandatory insurance and those that don’t. The trick is you can’t pick any car on their website. In the picture below, you can see this rental car, with pick up in Jaco, includes the TPL. That means the mandatory insurance is included in the price. Any cover you get above that is extra.
Of course, I still suggest getting the full coverage offered by Discover Cars, which covers you even more.
You can browse cars on Discover Cars here .
Book Shuttles
If renting a car isn’t in your budget, you don’t feel comfortable driving in Costa Rica , or you just don’t like driving, shuttles are the next best option. There are hundreds of shuttle routes available all over the country, and they are very affordable.
Shuttles in Costa Rica are specifically for tourists and often include pick up and drop off at your selected hotels and airports. The drivers also speak some English, and the vehicles have air conditioning. You’ll also be guaranteed a seat when you book a shuttle (which isn’t the case with the public bus system.)
To get the best price, use the website Bookaway . They compare all the offers and prices of shuttle companies in Costa Rica so you get the best price! Honestly, we have saved so much money using Bookaway!
You can search for shuttles online on Bookaway here.
Lastly, you can use the public bus system. On short journeys, such as from San Jose to La Fortuna or Uvita to Manuel Antonio, this system is great. However, the longer the journey the more hassle and time spent on a bus. It’s undoubtedly best to save the public bus in Costa Rica for short and straightforward trips!
The public buses are definitely the cheapest way to get around Costa Rica, but they are not always very reliable and schedules often change without notice and delays are to be expected. The buses can also be very crowded and hot – so just be prepared!
It’s also good to speak some Spanish if you plan on riding the public bus since most drivers and ticket booth operators don’t speak English.
While there are plenty of fun things to do in Monteverde and Santa Elena, a night tour or night walk should definitely be on the top of your list! Seeing nocturnal wildlife safely in the dark is such a unique experience and one you’re sure not to forget anytime soon.

Monteverde, costa rica’s fun eco adventures – zip-lining, hanging bridges & naturalist hikes.
The pristine Monteverde cloud forests are a wonderland for both nature lovers and adventure seekers. It is one of the most popular regions in Costa Rica for a reason. In this lush environment, you can go zip-lining and walk in the jungle canopy on hanging bridges all in one day. Or if you just want to go on a leisurely naturalist guided walk and learn about the rich flora and fauna that’s great too. I spent 2 days enjoying my Monteverde Costa Rica adventures and love sharing. So, read on to learn more about Monteverde and why it’s one of the most popular areas in Costa Rica.
About Monteverde
Monteverde is a region meaning the ‘green forest” in northwest Costa Rica. It’s lush landscapes of cloud forests on mountaintops is one of the most popular areas in Costa Rica for ecotourism. The biodiversity and wildlife is a nature lovers paradise. It offers many ways to interact with the environment through hanging bridges in the jungle canopy, zip-lining and naturalist hikes.
The weather at Monteverde is very unpredictable and quick to change from being sunny, windy or rainy. But this also means its amazing for rainbows. As visitors it’s important to dress smart and in layers for any weather type. Ponchos are a wise choice because umbrellas do not fare well in the wind. The dry season is February to May.
My 2-Day Experience in Monteverde
I was with Intrepid Travel and organized my time to see as much as possible. The first day I did a combination tour at 100% Aventura Adventure Park for Zip-lining and Hanging Bridges Walk. Then, the next day I did the naturalist guided walk at the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Overall, I enjoyed it but we did catch some rainy days. It is a rainforest after all, so glad I was prepared. I am from Seattle, so this felt like home to me.
Monteverde Costa Rica Adventures Top Things to Do
Zip-Lining and Hanging Bridges Monteverde Costa Rica Adventures
Zip Lin e – 100% Aventura Adventure Park offers 9 zip lines, including the longest line in Costa Rica stretching 1590 meters. They also offer a rappel jump and the biggest Tarzan Swing in Costa Rica, plunging 45 meters (148 feet). I enjoyed my morning here and appreciated that you experience a couple short lines first to practice before taking the long stretch across the valley. For the first time, I tried the superman line and flew through the air face down like superman.
I did the combined tour with 100% Aventura Adventure Park for both the Zip Lining and Hanging Bridges. Their shuttle picked us up at the hotel and took us to the sites.
Hanging Bridges – 100% Aventura Adventure Park offers a guided tour on 8 hanging bridges up in the jungle canopy along a 1.9-mile (3 km) hiking trail. This is one of the best ways to experience the cloud forest high in the trees and get that amazing bird’s eye view. Plus, a naturalist guide points out flora and fauna along the way.
Monteverde Cloud Forest
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is the smallest reserve in the area, however, the most popular because of its virgin forests and biodiversity. Scientists recognize this reserve as having the highest number of orchids on Earth.
We enjoyed our walking tour here with a naturalist guide. I found it amazing for birding and the guide was helpful with the high-powered lens to get a better view. We saw the colorful (through the lens) and elusive Quetzal bird, hummingbirds, white capuchin monkeys, tarantulas and frogs. Plus, all the incredible, lush plant life is omnipresent.
However, at this reserve I experienced overtourism. This beautiful country is popular for a reason. But, in my opinion, there was too many people at this reserve. There appeared to be groups of about 8-10 people every 20 feet. There was no hanging around, because we had to move on for the next group. Overall, in my opinion, Costa Rica is getting to the tipping point of overtourism which negates its whole point of sustainability and ecotourism.
Unique Opportunities for Night Tours or Bungee Jumping
Night Tour – With about 80% of the wildlife in the cloud forests being nocturnal, doing a night tour is a unique opportunity. For nature lovers this is a must to possibly see frogs, sloths, snakes, tarantulas or lizards. Once the sun dips it gets chilly in the cloud forest, so come prepared.
Bungy Jumping – For the adrenaline junkies, there is The Extreme Bungee Jumping in Monteverde Tour. As the highest jump in Central America, this plunges over 460 feet (140 m).
Where to Stay Monteverde Costa Rica Adventures
The main hub for tourism in Monteverde is Santa Elena along with the nearby neighborhood of Cerro Plano. We stayed at the charming Hotel de Jardines de Monteverde in Cerro Plano. It was about a 20-minute walk up and down a very steep hill to the town center. It has a nice restaurant and bar along with rustic, quaint rooms. There was also nice restaurants and stores nearby. Just a couple blocks away, we enjoyed a group dinner at the popular Thomas & Thiago.
Enjoy Monteverde!
Monteverde is a green paradise in so many ways. It provides people an opportunity to immerse themselves in the heart of the rainforest with even a bird’s eye view. Oscar Castillo
My name is Oscar Castillo. For almost 20 years, I have been working in Monteverde as a Professional Bilingual Naturalist Guide, certified by the Costa Rican Tourism Board (License #1090). Since then, I have also worked with leading institutions in fields such as ecotourism, conservation, and environmental education.
Monteverde is unique because of the high level of endemism that makes these forests one of the most biodiverse places in the world. I have been navigating Monteverde’s forests for over 20 years participating in a variety of nature field work, including bird inventory, amphibian inventory, guiding nature hikes, night tours, and birding tours. I am forever in love with nature and would be happy to share the wonders of Monteverde with you.

This was one of the best eco-tours I’ve taken to date. Oscar is a first-rate guide, highly knowledgeable about indigenous wildlife and flora of Costa Rica and Monteverde, and about the specific preserves where you might be able to find specific species you might be hoping to see as well. He’s also just an all-around great person to spend a great day with, and he works really hard to make sure you get the most from your time with him. Highly recommend Oscar!
Josh Pelta-Heller
We booked a night tour and spotted many animals that otherwise we would have never seen. We got to know Oscar as an intelligent, friendly, interested person, with whom we had great conversations with. He is really knowledgeable and has many years of experience in his field. Really cares of providing the best, so passionate about what he does. We would definitely recommend to take a tour with him 🙂 Thanks Nasua Tours! 🙂

Oscar is a gentleman and a scholar. He guided my wife and I on a birding tour thru Curi Cancha Preserve in Feb 2020 and we highly, highly recommend!
He taught us so much not only about birds, their songs and sounds, but also about the flora & fauna of the area as well. His passion was evident from the start of our trip and you can tell from his encounters with the other guides that he is highly respected amongst his peers. Thank you!

Vodka Museum Tour with transport (excursion only)
Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.
Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other
Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.
Moscow Tours centering on Russian History
Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.
Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers
What is the best time to visit moscow.
Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide
How many days are enough in Moscow?
If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.
Do they speak English in Moscow?
As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.
Is it safe to travel to Moscow?
It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus
- Description
- Choose date
Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!
On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:
- The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
- The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
- The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?
