Best Places for a Solo Trip Around Chennai

Are you looking for best places for a solo trip around Chennai? This article describes the list of places in Chennai to enjoy alone

Places in Chennai to Enjoy Alone

The best trips are those where you are in the driver’s seat, metaphorically of course. You choose your destinations, and you decide the pace. That is what solo travel allows you to do. No restrictions, no holding back. A solo trip around Chennai is the best way to explore the city and the places around it. We have shortlisted a few destinations for a solo travel Chennai trip, get into your rented car, and zoom off.

Beaches and Chennai

The best places in Chennai to enjoy alone are its beaches. And there are quite a few.  Marina Beach  is one of the longest in the world. It is also one of the most vibrant places in the city. Hordes of people visit it every day, and there is never a dull moment. And yet, among all that crowd, you can still find a spot, to sit on the sand and enjoy the waves crashing into the shores.

The memorial built in honour of Karl Schmidt, a European sailor, who lost his life, trying to save a young British girl, is the highlight of  Edward Elliot’s beach . The promenade here has rows of shops, selling food, clothes and jewellery and other artefacts.

Head to the  Covelong beach  for lessons in surfing. And while you are there take a walk through the fishing hamlet, soak in the simplicity of the natives, and when you are done doing that, hitch a ride on a fishing boat, and venture into the Bay of Bengal.

Stop by at  Fisherman’s Cove , a lovely 5-star property, owned by the Taj Group. Enjoy a spa session, or a meal at the hotel, built on the ramparts of a Dutch Fort. The hotel’s sprawling lawns lead to a private beach.

One of the Twelve

The best places for a solo trip around Chennai must include a visit to the Catholic Churches here. These aren’t ordinary Churches, they are unique, for a reason. St. Thomas, one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus, was martyred here, and three places of worship are dedicated to him.

The  San Thome Cathedral  is a Basilica, built on the tomb of St. Thomas. It is one of the three Basilica’s in the world, built on an apostle’s tomb. The other two are St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican and Santiago De Compostela, in Spain, where St. James, the apostle, is buried. The magnificent gothic architecture is impressive. There is a museum in the Church, with a lot of interesting artefacts from that era.

On Little Mount , is a cave, where the apostle is said to have lived. An opening at the back of the cave is believed to be the route that St. Thomas took to escape the locals who had come to kill him. The cave also bears hand and foot impressions, of the apostle. There is a natural spring, in the rocky terrain, that never runs dry, is said to have miraculous healing powers. Legend has it that the spring had emerged out of nowhere, at the apostle's command.

One of the places in Chennai to enjoy alone is on  St. Thomas Mount , the hill shrine. The 17th-century chapel has a lot of relics and is a much-revered place. The panoramic view from the top of the mount is terrific. It overlooks the runway of the Chennai Airport and offers a panoramic view of the entire city.

Explore Mylapore

Mylapore is one of the oldest residential areas of Chennai. It still maintains its old-world charm, narrow streets, old houses and a lot of history. The robust smell of freshly ground coffee beans, sizzling hot vadas and the sights and smells of the colour of flowers, lining the streets, describe the quintessential essence of Mylapore.

The  Kapaleeswarar Temple  takes centre stage. The magnificent temple is dedicated to Shiva. It is an ancient 7th-century temple, with distinctive Dravidian architecture, with a massive gopuram, standing tall. Even after all these centuries, it is still used as a place of worship. And if you enter the temple premises, you will witness the elaborate and enthralling rituals, to the almost hypnotic chants of holy verses, and the clanging of bells. The overpowering smell of incense and the glow of earthen oil lamps add to the mesmerising experience.

Not far from here is the  Ramakrishna Math , built-in the devotion of a 19th-century religious guru, Sri Ramakrishna. Inside you will find a universal temple, a multimedia museum, a shrine dedicated to the guru, and a mandapam and a well-stocked library, which houses books on the life of the spiritual guru and writings on religion and philosophy. Books and CDs on the teachings of the guru are available here.

East Coast Road

The East Coast Road, popularly known as ECR, runs parallel to the coast of the Bay of Bengal. It is a scenic stretch of road, with a lot of interesting things to see and do.

If joy rides and adrenaline rush excite you, then a stop at the  VGP Theme Park  is recommended. The place is also a resort, with cosy cottages and several restaurants on the premises. However, its USP is the private beach that visitors can access.

Art and culture enthusiasts must visit the  Cholamandal Artists’ Village . The exhibits showcase the city’s heritage and culture. Established over half-a-century ago, the village boasts of being the largest and most significant contemporary artists' community in the country.

The Madras Crocodile Bank  is the best place to see different species of crocodiles and alligators in a solo trip around Chennai. The sprawling campus is home to more than 2,400 crocs, gharials and alligators and over 4,000 reptiles, including some of the deadliest snakes on the planet. They have several activities, which promise to be quite an experience, such as night safari, underwater gharial exhibit and feeding Jaws, an enormous crocodile. Jaws has the distinction of being the biggest captive crocodile in India. The property is a natural habitat for some rare birds that nest in the trees.

Go further down the same stretch of road, and you reach Kovalam, a little fishing hamlet, which has gained popularity for being a surfing destination. A surfing school here conducts lessons in surfing. The waters are safe and the trainers experienced – you can learn surfing techniques and get some practice too.

WONDERFUL SOUTH INDIA TOUR With Kerala Tour

WONDERFUL SOUTH INDIA TOUR With Kerala

Wow, what a tour! I was blown away by the beauty of Kerala and the friendly people there. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting South India. The tour was well organized and ran smoothly from start to finish. Our guide was knowledgeable and entertaining, and she made sure that everyone in our group had a great time. The daily destinations were interesting and well worth visiting, and the itinerary allowed for plenty of flexibility in terms of what we wanted to see and do. I couldn't recommend this tour more!

Chennai to Kochi - 9 days Tour

Chennai to Kochi - 9 days

Our guide made the tour special by stopping to show us interesting things along the way as we were a very small group. If we had been a bigger group this flexibility would not have been possible and I think then the tour would have been too many temples. However, the tour as we had it was excellent as we saw a lot of the rural areas and small villages. Note that this tour does not include a tour of Chennai or Kochi so try to stay an extra day before and after the tour to visit these places by yourself. Train ride was great, nothing to fear; hotels all comfortable but out of the city center; guide and driver excellent and the people of India are the friendliest in the world.

Tamilnadu Temple Tour (A Budget Friendly Tour)

I had a good experience with MTA. I wanted to see as many cities and the traditional highlights of Tamil Nadu in a short period of time. On the first day of the trip I made the request if it was possible to visit Mahabalipuram because this was not on the travel itinerary. I also informed them that I have an interest in learning the history of Tamil Nadu. So they included museums aswell. They made the changes for me directly. The tour guide was well versed in Tamil. And has a good understanding of the English language. I had the privilege to converse with him in Tamil. He gave clear and nice instructions. Whenever I had a request let it be an extra stop or questions regarding the beautiful tempels or monuments. He was able to answer all the questions. I made a great friend on the way!

Temples of Tamil Nadu: A Spiritual Sojourn

What people love about tamil nadu solo tours.

By accident there was just my wife and I for our tour group and had the most wonderful nine days with our driver Pandi who was extremely competent and courteous and knowledgeable and helpful in all things. The tour took us to some fabulous places we would not have thought of going if we had planned a trip ourselves and with what were to us the chaotic roads and road rules it would have been impossible for us to do the trip on our own. Well done MTA Destination Experts and well done Pandi.
We visit a 12-day historical South India temple tour and it was the trip of a lifetime. The tour was organized by a reliable and experienced tour operator and they provided us with an incredible experience. The tour included visits to some of the most famous temples in South India, including the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, Brihadeeshwara Temple in Thanjavur, and the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam. Each temple was incredibly beautiful and awe-inspiring in its own way. My favourite was the Meenakshi Amman Temple, which was simply breathtaking. The tour also included visits to the famous Nilgiri Hill Station and the historic city of Mysore. The views from the top of the hill station were simply amazing and the city of Mysore was full of rich history and culture. The tour was well-organized and the tour guide was very knowledgeable about the region. He was able to provide us with valuable insights into the history and culture of South India. The food served during the tour was also delicious and varied. Overall, I had an amazing experience on this 12-day historical South India temple tour. It was an educational and enjoyable experience that I would highly recommend to anyone looking to explore the beauty and culture of South India.
South India tour with a focus on the beautiful state of Kerala. It was a truly unforgettable experience that I will cherish for a lifetime. The tour started in the bustling city of Chennai, where we were greeted with warm hospitality and delicious South Indian cuisine. From there, we made our way to the serene backwaters of Kerala, where we were able to relax and take in the stunning natural beauty of the region. Our houseboat cruise through the backwaters was a highlight of the trip, as we got to witness the daily life of the locals and see the lush greenery and wildlife up close. Next, we visited the hill station of Munnar, known for its tea plantations and breathtaking views. The cool climate and peaceful atmosphere were a welcome change from the bustling cities. We also got to visit a tea factory and learn about the process of tea making, which was a fascinating experience. One of the most memorable parts of the tour was our stay in a traditional homestay in Thekkady. The warmth and hospitality of the hosts made us feel like we were part of their family. We also got to go on a spice plantation tour and learn about the different spices and their uses in Indian cuisine. The tour also included a visit to the historic city of Kochi, known for its rich cultural heritage and colonial architecture. We got to explore the bustling markets, taste local delicacies, and watch a traditional Kathakali dance performance. The tour ended with a visit to Kovalam, a beautiful beach town in Kerala. The golden sands, clear waters, and stunning sunsets made it the perfect place to relax and unwind after a busy trip. Overall, the South India tour with a focus on Kerala was a truly wonderful experience. The itinerary was well-planned, the accommodations were comfortable, and the local guides were knowledgeable and friendly. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to explore the diverse and enchanting region of South India. It truly was a trip of a lifetime.

I will be on my own in Chennia for 3 days in February, any suggestions of what I should see and where to go please

I don't even know where Chennai is. You would get better feedback from the experts in the destination specific forums. Though traveling solo may be high on your mind, the questions are similar to any travelers to Chennai. Those folks would know best, or check out TripAdvisor's 'what to do' day activities for Chennai.

Thanks for the message, I realise what you say but last year I was in Dehli, posted on here and meet up with a single lady for three day, hence my post here this year

Why Tamil Nadu is Best for Solo Women Travelers in India

My Experience as a Solo Woman Traveler in Tamil Nadu, India

chennai solo travel

Soltan Frédéric/Getty Images

Women's safety is often a major concern for female travelers visiting India for the first time, especially those traveling solo. Horror stories are common. However, the reality is that not all of India is the same. While sexual harassment is prevalent in north India, it's noticeably less so in the south. And, in Tamil Nadu, it's almost absent.

Tamil Nadu doesn't usually feature on the itineraries of first-time visitors to India, who prefer to head north and see the famous attractions there . However, if you're a solo woman traveler who's worried about safety and how you'll cope with the challenges in India, Tamil Nadu is recommended as the best place to start your travels.

  • Is India Unsafe for Foreign Women? What You Should Know

My Decision to Travel Around Tamil Nadu

"You should spend more time traveling in south India", a number of people told me. "It's different there."

I was no stranger to south India. After all, I'd lived in Kerala for eight months while I was managing a guesthouse in Varkala . I'd also visited quite a few places in Karnataka , Chennai a couple of times, and infamously drove an auto rickshaw from Chennai to Mumbai . In Chennai, I had noticed that people rarely gave me a second glance, unlike many other places in India where I was often leered at and photographed by groups of men. It was refreshing.

So, on a whim, I decided to embark on a solo trip through Tamil Nadu. I wanted to see some of the state's temples and my husband wasn't interested in joining me. Plus, I wanted to experience what it would be like as a single, white, female traveling alone there and on a budget. I'd already explored most states in India, so I had a lot to compare it to.

Planning the Trip

I planned a whirlwind itinerary: six destinations ( Madurai , Rameshwaram , Tanjore , Chidambaram, Pondicherry, and Tiruvannamalai ) in 10 days. Apart from flights there and back, I would travel to each destination by bus or train, and stay in hotels priced from 500-2,000 rupees per night. I researched, planned and made all my travel arrangements myself -- so I really would be alone. There wouldn't be any tour company or travel agency looking after me. And, I didn't know one word of the language (Tamil), so I wouldn't have any real advantage over other travelers who were new to India.

However, knowing that Tamil Nadu is one of India's more conservative states, I made sure I packed accordingly -- Indian clothes only and all with short sleeves (unlike the sleeveless kurtas I commonly wear at home in cosmopolitan Mumbai ).

It was with some trepidation and the usual touch of paranoia that I arrived at Madurai airport, my first destination, wondering what to expect. How would people treat me and how hard would it be to travel around by myself?

My First Impressions

I threw myself into my adventure by going on a four hour guided walking tour with Madurai Inhabitants the next morning. It gave me a fabulous introduction to the city. The friendliness of people was quickly apparent, including women. They were outgoing and called me over to take their photos. In addition, women could commonly be seen in places usually dominated by men, including sitting by the roadside drinking chai . Some other places I found women were working along side men in restaurants and behind the front desks in hotels.

Within a couple of days, I felt myself relaxing and all tension dissolving. Even though I was alone, I felt secure, safe, and confident. It was a strange and unexpected feeling. People spoke good English and were helpful. I was easily able to find my way around bus stations, which had been one of my biggest concerns. People also tended to mind their own business. They seemed simple and dignified. I felt like I had some dignity too. I wasn't constantly being hounded by shopkeepers or having to keep my guard up against sexual harassment. At one destination, Chidambaram, I didn't see another foreigner the whole time I was there. Yet, I wasn't overtly stared at or bothered.

Did men approach me during the trip? Yes, a few times. Although, more often than not, they wanted to pose for a photo by themselves. Elsewhere in India, I'm used to finding cameras pointed at me instead of the monuments. If the men of Tamil Nadu did photograph me, I didn't readily notice or feel uncomfortable about it. On the whole, they were very respectful towards me.

Why is Tamil Nadu Better for Women?

I carried out a bit of research to try and discover the reason why Tamil Nadu seemed to be a better place for women. Apparently, it can be attributed to as far back as the Sangam era of Tamil literature, from around 350 BC to 300 AD. This literature championed the education of women and their acceptance in the public sphere. They had considerable freedom to choose their own partners, and participated actively in the social life and work of the community. Although there has been a decline in the status of women since then, clearly Tamil Nadu is still well ahead of many other places in India.

I do realize that other women travelers may have a different experience of Tamil Nadu to what I did. However, there were a number of other things I really liked about the state, which all contributed to me enjoying my time there immensely. On the whole, the roads are in excellent condition, and buses are a very convenient and economical way of getting around. The hotels I stayed in were clean, efficiently managed, and represented good value for money. Compared to some parts of India, Tamil Nadu is laid back and uncrowded. The temples are magnificent as well, and their sprawling grounds are peaceful.

I'm looking forward returning! (The only drawback is that I'm not a fan of south Indian breakfasts, but that's a different matter)!

Where to Go in Tamil Nadu

For the sake of convenience, most people fly into Chennai and start their trip there. Then, they head down the coast to Mammallapuram and Pondicherry.

"It’s really nice to have a platform like GAFFL with lots of travelers wanting to do the same as you, a real beautiful cultural exchange. You can meet people so easily and in a trustful way. We were four girls, from French, German and American backgrounds, without knowing each other from before. We spent an amazing week together, 2000km driving, camping on the way. We saw kangaroos, koalas, penguins and pelicans"

Saed

“I have found GAFFL to be an amazing tool for finding similar minded travel partners to embark on an adventure. Through GAFFL, I had organized a trip to Mexico City last month and Quazi joined the trip from Victoria, BC. We spent 14 days of straight exploring, hiking, eating and drinking. Quite an amazing experience - all thanks to GAFFL!”

Scarlett

"I accidentally scrolled across GAFFL and I'm so pleased I did. I met Amaia and immediately decided to road-trip together. It has honestly made NZ so much cheaper to explore as I get to split the costs with someone too"

Is chennai safe to travel, solo travel experience.

Yes, I felt safe exploring and learning about new places and experiences. I highly recommend visiting the Santhome Cathedral Basilica Church; it's an amazing place. Also worth a visit is the Golden Beach near Snow Kingdom, which is one of the best attractions in Chennai. Other notable places include the Jayalalitha Memorial, Marina Beach, ECR Beach, Partha Saradhi Temple, Iscon Temple, Snake Park, Lighthouse, and Guindy National Park. I particularly recommend experiencing the sunrise and sunset at the beach resorts – it's truly better than any other experience. Tamil Nadu is known for its temples and beaches, which are well worth visiting in various locations. I would love to go there again, but the humidity can make it challenging. Apart from that, there are fantastic hotels and affordable accommodation options available.

Is Chennai safe for women?

Pretty safe. Very mild risk of weird stares and looks. But most people are very welcoming. Slight boundary issues are present if you are a foreigner. People might want to invade your personal space a bit, but more from curiosity I would say.

I would rate the safety as a 7 on 10 during day and 4 on 10 during night. The major city areas are usually safe even during night till midnight. Also it's gender neutral and balanced. Connectivity and trasport availability are fine.

Is Chennai safe right now?

United states travel advisory exercise a high degree of caution, canada's travel advisory exercise a high degree of caution, australia's travel advisory exercise a high degree of caution, is chennai worth visiting.

Chennai surprised me! My ₹250/night hostel became my launchpad for exploring temples, museums, and delicious street food. Haggling in markets was a fun challenge, and free museums added to the cultural immersion. The ECR beaches offered serenity, while Matyasri Narayana temple's beachside location was unique. T Nagar's vibrant shops tested my bargaining skills, but the deals were unbeatable!

Solo female travel in india: my honest highlights + lowlights.

There were good times, bad times, and a lot of vomit. Unless you just found me through Google, you probably already know I just spent two months in India . I’ve been talking about little else since! Like anything in life, there were highs and lows of travelling alone in India, though I would say that it was overall an incredibly positive experience.

I have to admit, I ummed and ahhed about solo travel in India and felt a bit nervous. Now I’m back in Chiang Mai, the location of my previous umming and ahhing, India feels like a crazy dream – one I nearly didn’t have. I’m so glad I did it! The only thing holding me back was India’s reputation and the things people say. Stupid really, as I’d been before (with a friend) and should have trusted my own gut rather than the comments of people who hadn’t even been.

Highlight: Feeling safe & secure

I travelled to 8 places during my 2 months in India and felt safe in all of them. Hippie Rishikesh , mountain town Dhramasala , pretty Pushkar and colonial Pondicherry were very touristy and I always knew would be safe. I even felt confident to walk around these places at night (well, like 8pm), something I wouldn’t even do in some areas of London. I initially wasn’t so sure about bigger cities like Amritsar , Jaipur and Chennai, but actually, I felt safe everywhere I went.

Pondicherry

The hostels in India were great and really set you up with a little community. The staff always spoke perfect English and ran day trips and tours so you could do things together, and it was easy to meet other backpackers . India isn’t Southeast Asia and I always exercised caution, trying not to arrive places late at night etc, but I never felt unsafe. The locals I met in India were so friendly and always wanted to chat, learn about you, and offer advice. I don’t have a single bad incident to share with you. Sure, I got a lot of looks from men, but I also got a lot of looks from women and children, because I look different. Oh and don’t get me started on the selfies! Older men in India were generally very respectful. Young modern guys who’d been bought up in forward-thinking communities were very sweet and normal. Deffo not the beer-drinking, leery guys I’d pass on a Saturday in England! The problems in India mainly generally lie in rural areas less touched by modern society. Of course, there are problems in cities, too (like anywhere in the world), but I personally didn’t have any issues. Make sure you stay in good neighbourhoods and be vigilant when in crowded places. Don’t go anywhere private with men you’ve just met, obviously.

Making friends in India

Lowlight: Being sick as a dog

I feel like I’ve gone on about this SO much but I honestly thought I would die in India. Over two months later, I still run to the bathroom after a rich coffee or round of dairy. India, you are something else . My total lowlight of solo travel was crying in a hospital bed strapped up to a drip after three weeks of medical turmoil.

Indian food

The other lowlight that comes with this point is that for the first month of my trip, I could hardly eat anything apart from plain rice and potatoes. Once I went out for dinner with a group who all ate delicious palak paneer, thali and masala dosas, while I ate a plate of plain rice. And still shat myself after.

Highlight: The hostels

I just touched on this above but I was so impressed with the hostels in India. I guess it stems from India being a place that people are traditionally warier about. In hostels in Southeast Asia, you don’t need organised activities or day trips because everyone knows it’s safe and easy to go off and do whatever by yourself. In India, backpackers sometimes band together a bit more and that’s reflected in the hostels. Almost every place I stayed offered daily activities, like walking tours, food tours and beach trips, which ran when enough people signed up. This also made things super cheap because you had people to split the costs with.

Lowlight: The temperature

I mean, this point is really just about what a bad planner I am. In the space of a couple of weeks, I managed to go from the coldest I’ve ever been (swear I didn’t take my furry trousers off for a week, grim) to so insanely hot that some sweat rolled from my forehead into my mouth and I had no energy to do anything about it. From -2 to 42 in a matter of weeks, my friends! It was insane.

Dharamsala India

And even though it was kinda my fault, I still paid the price. The far north, like Dharamsala , was still coming out of its winter when I visited in early March. Had I visited just three weeks later, I think it would have been warmer and quite pleasant. Rajasthan and the south were heading into summer by the time I reached them. Hot AF . Yet, a few weeks prior, they hadn’t been so bad. I mean, you can see the obvious solution. I should have done Rajasthan first, and the mountains towards the end of my trip. Hindsight is a wonderful thing! We live and learn. Though, knowing me, I probably won’t learn. No doubt I’ll go somewhere soon thinking ‘it’ll be fine’ then complain the whole time 😉

Highlight: So many solo female travellers

Holi India travelling alone women

I didn’t expect to be the only solo female traveller in India but I also didn’t expect to meet so many others. I met more solo women travelling than any other group. More than solo males, females in groups, or couples! Once I stayed in a 6-person dorm where every single person was a solo female traveller. And, as far as I’m aware, they all seemed to be having a great time.

Lowlight: Buses/trains getting in at weird times

I heard this quote recently:

When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable.  Clifton Fadiman

It sums up India pretty well. Some of the trains and buses I wanted to catch arrived or left places when it was dark which is usually the golden not-to-do for solo women. I’d think ‘why can’t they just leave earlier and get there before dark?’ but then I’d remember that India wasn’t necessarily catering to me. But sometimes it was a bit frustrating.

Around Southeast Asia, there are plenty of buses basically designed for tourists, but that’s not so much the case in India. Generally, I could avoid arriving in the middle of the night, but I couldn’t always ensure arriving in daylight. I guess sometimes the distances you travel in India just don’t always fit into that 12-hour window!

Highlight: Comparing the North AND South

Pondicherry India

Initially, I planned to just visit the north of India. After seeing some gorgeous photos of Pondicherry , on the south-east coast near Chennai, I decided to spend my last week down in that area. I’m so glad I did! As one of the world’s biggest (and second most populous) countries, there’s so much variety between the different communities. People in the north and south speak different languages and have different climates, cuisines and customs. I think comparing them is a great idea for any trip! It was definitely hotter and more humid down south, and I also noticed it was less conservative. The state of Tamil Nadu is relatively modern and, especially in Pondicherry, women wear shorts and t-shirts like they would at home. My favourite bit was comparing the food, from the heavier curries in the north to the delicious South Indian food. Traditional tiffin breakfasts were the best, made with masala dosa, idli, vada and uttapam, served with mint chutneys. The $1 chicken biryanis I ate for dinner were also so good!

Food in Pondicherry India

Lowlight: Seeing how animals are treated

In India, I couldn’t help but notice how badly animals are often treated. Donkeys and horses would be overloaded with heavy carts with someone standing above whipping them. I’m sure so much else goes on behind the scenes you don’t see as a tourist. I know these things aren’t unique to India. Before and afterwards, I’ve been based in Chiang Mai where all sorts of horrible things go on: The Tiger Temple and elephant riding, for example. Human exploitation, like the Long Neck tribes, is even worse! So it’s not a unique problem to India but I did notice it a lot.

Highlight: Getting around easily with English

Although I don’t want to pull a positive point from the effects of colonialism, India is one of the easiest places to travel with English. With so many different languages spoken in India, and the north and south not sharing any kind of common language, you’ll find English is the lingo franca. In modern cafes and workplaces in Delhi and Mumbai, you’ll find Hindi speakers often even speak to each other in English. In film and TV, people drop in English words and phrases. It makes life super easy for travellers.

Solo female travel in India

Highlight: The prices!

Whoops, we’re finishing with two highlights because India is awesome and there aren’t many lowlights. I only spent £1,100 in 2 months in India and that included a £90 internal flight. I wrote a guide to everything I spent that’ll hopefully help you plan your own India trip on a budget ! I regularly ate dinner for 80p, had masala chai for literal pennies, and paid crazy cheap prices for Grab scooter rides. You can do India on a budget of about £500 a month if you stay in hostels, travel by train or bus, and eat locally. It’s the cheapest place I’ve been for sure.

Thanks for reading!

All in all, India was a banger! Just a shame I was unlucky and got so sick. India isn’t a difficult place to travel as a solo female but I still feel happy and proud of myself for doing it. I mean why not, we should all give ourselves some self-love from time to time! See you next time for more adventures,

My Ultimate Solo Travel Guide to Pondicherry, India

  • March 6, 2021
  • india , solo , travel , wanderer , wanderlust

India’s Little France – Pondicherry is a union territory of India located in Tamil Nadu, and it is officially known as Puducherry. It shares most of its culture from the state of Tamil Nadu. But it has a unique style of its own as it was earlier colonised by the Dutch, French, and British in the 17th and 18th centuries. The houses, cafes, restaurants, churches, and even shops have a French flair which is quite noticeable.

chennai solo travel

Once you visit Pondicherry, you will forget that you are in India as this place looks quite different. The natural beauty and the richly diverse culture of this place are nothing short of marvellous. The locals are spiritually inclined and practice their meditation and yoga diligently – something you should also try during your solo trip to Pondicherry.

Before you get all hyped up and book your tickets, here’s my ultimate solo travel guide to Pondicherry so that you can make the most out of your visit.

How to reach Pondicherry?

If you are travelling from the southern part of India and you wish to travel by road, you can take an overnight bus or book a taxi. You can also rent a car for the entirety of your trip, which will save your transportation costs in the city.

Alternatively, you can reach Pondicherry by train too. The Pondicherry Railway Station is well connected to all major cities in the country and easily accessible too.

The Pondicherry Airport is well connected to the Kempegowda International Airport (Bangalore) and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (Hyderabad), and both of these cities have daily flights to Pondicherry. If you are a foreign traveller, you can take a flight to either of these cities and then reach Pondicherry by a connecting flight.

Best time to visit Pondicherry

The  best time to visit  Pondicherry is from October to March as the temperature ranges from 22°C to 32°C. You can experience the rainfall here in October, November, and December. The climate in January, February, and March are dry with little to no rainfall.

If you do not mind the heat, you can also travel in the summer season. Temperatures can vary from 25°C to 36°C, so keep your sunscreen and hats handy and wear the  required clothing . During the monsoon season, it can rain quite a lot, but it is nothing to worry about – that’s the beauty of Pondicherry weather!

Affordable places to stay in Pondicherry

While in Pondicherry, you can spend peaceful nights wherever you want – hotels, homestays, or even the hotels near the airport. I have compiled a list of affordable places where you can stay during your solo trip to Pondicherry.

  • Ramana Residency, Orleanpet – ₹900 to ₹1200 per night
  • Hotel Ram International, Chathiram – ₹1500 to ₹1800 per night

  • Hotel Bon Sejour, Kuyavarpalayam – ₹1600 to 1900 per night
  • Hotel Atithi, Heritage Town – ₹2700 to ₹2900 per night

Top tourist places to visit in Pondicherry

Pondicherry is known for its French flair, beaches, and ancient temples and churches. Out of the numerous places that you can visit in Pondicherry, here’s a list of my favourites places that I visited during my solo trip.

Sri Aurobindo Ashram

Founded by Sri Aurobindo, this is the most-visited tourist spot in Pondicherry. It is a spiritual ashram that expanded over a few years as more and more disciples gathered to seek spirituality. Not only is this place popular because people try to seek divinity and simplicity in life, but it is also one of the biggest ashrams in the country and the one that you must visit. You can meditate and relax in the ashram, and it usually takes a couple of hours to see the entire ashram. So, I would suggest that you try to visit the ashram in the morning.

It is a township where people from all parts of the world and of all ages live together. Mirra Alfassa established it in 1968 and was a follower of Sri Aurobindo. Many people called her “Mother” out of love. This is such a serene place, and it will bring you immense peace once you visit here. You can meditate and learn some new yoga asanas as well. Make sure you take out a couple of hours to visit this place and don’t be in a hurry to leave while you are here, as it may be considered disrespectful.

Pondicherry Lighthouse

This is one of the major tourist attractions in Pondicherry. It was constructed by the French in the nineteenth century and had a focal height of 48 metres. It gives an amazing view of the city from a great height. Keep in mind that it is open only from 3 pm to 7 pm, but the best time to visit is around sunset. I would recommend you visit the lighthouse on weekdays as it usually gets crowded at other times.

What are beaches made up of? Sand? Well, think again! The Rock Beach in Pondicherry replaces the sand with rocks, and let me tell you – it is beautiful! While there are not any water sports, unlike other beaches, the view from Rock Beach is stunning. You can watch the sunrise, or sunset, or just sit in a café. You can also walk around the beach for as long as you want. Try not to visit this beach late at night as the police patrols the area and asks everyone to get back to their residence.

Paradise Beach

This is a peaceful and relaxing beach that you can reach only on a ferry. You will not be allowed to visit the beach in your private car or a cab/taxi. You will have to take a ferry from Pondicherry, which will drop you on Paradise Beach. While the journey on the ferry is a fascinating one, the beach in itself is even better. Not only does this beach make you feel relaxed from a tiring day, but it is also the perfect spot for your next Instagram post.

The beauty of this beach during sunset will leave you lost for words, and even if you don’t enjoy photography, the sunset will make you take out your phone and click at least a couple of pictures.

Serenity Beach

Golden sand, palm trees, views of the Bay of Bengal – these are some of the features of the Serenity Beach in Pondicherry. Well, the name of the beach says it all. Unlike other beaches, this one is not crowded, and you can have some quiet time here. You can also click some great shots of the sunset or simply take a walk – whatever you like. Not only photography, but the water sports and shopping complexes here are other things you wouldn’t want to miss!

Best places to shop in Pondicherry

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Deepak Gogoi (@deepakgogoi1)

Located on Mission Street in Heritage Town, Casablanca is open from 10 in the morning to 10 at night. You can find everything related to fashion here. From the simplest type of clothing to the fanciest, from loungewear to kurtas and dresses, they have it all here. This place primarily only sells clothes, and I recommend that you take out a few hours to explore it all and get your hands on some traditional clothes.

Serenity Beach Bazaar

Located on Serenity Beach, this bazaar sells a variety of items like clothes, accessories, handicrafts, souvenirs, and a lot more. Make sure you  bargain  a lot here. Because more often than not, the sellers try to charge a lot more than what the item is actually worth. If you aren’t into shopping, buy a  souvenir  or two as this bazaar is quite famous for that.

Where do you find good quality leather items? No, not in fancy malls, but in Hidesign on Jawaharlal Nehru Street. You might think that these items would be made using low-quality leather, but absolutely not. You can find wallets, belts, handbags, all made of high-quality leather and a price cheaper than the big-name brands! If you do not wish to spend a lot of money, you can also buy second-hand products here. In addition to this, you can also find a café on the top floor to fuel yourself if you get tired of shopping.

Muthu Silk Plaza

Located in Heritage Town, this place is a heaven for all solo female travellers. This is your go-to shop to buy anything made of silk. And the six yards of sheer elegance – the saree, that’s the bestseller here. The quality is amazing, and these are an absolute steal. They also sell kids’ wear and men’s wear, just in case you want any of it for a friend or family member back home.

Sund’s Art

If you appreciate and like handmade items, then this place is for you. It is one of the unique shopping places that you’ll find, and I was surprised looking at the variety of handmade items they sell. Located on Aurobindo Street, this place sells all the colourful, fashionable, and trendy handicrafts. I would highly recommend you visit this place as it sells some true masterpieces.

Top places to beat your hunger black and blue!

Café des arts, white town.

This is hands down one of the best cafes in Pondicherry that offers mouth-watering French dishes. You will also find a wide variety of desserts that will find a place in your tummy even if you’re full. This is the perfect place to visit after a long tiring day of sightseeing as it can fill your tummy without burning a hole in your pocket. It is open from 8:30 in the morning until 7 in the evening, and an average meal will cost you ₹300.

Surguru Restaurant, Heritage Town

Is your solo trip to south India even worth it if you don’t eat south Indian food? I tried a lot of dishes here, but my absolute favourite was their dosa. They also serve a variety of French dishes, which are no less than delectable. This can be your perfect spot for breakfast as it opens at 6:30 in the morning and shuts at 11 at night. A bellyful meal here will cost you no more than ₹200.

Appachi Chettinad Restaurant, MG Road

The name says it all – this place is south Indian to the core. It is one of the most popular restaurants in Pondicherry, and it won’t disappoint you. The restaurant specialises in ‘Chettinad’ (a Southern Tamil Nadu region) dishes, as the name suggests, and seafood. It is open from 12 in the afternoon to 3:30 in the evening and then from 7 pm to 10:30 pm. The perfect way to become ₹250 poorer is to eat the Dum Biryani here! Trust me, it is drool-worthy! Also, remember that most Chettinad dishes are spicy, but you can always let any Indian restaurant know about your spice tolerance level!

Les Alizes, White Town

When it comes to beautiful restaurants in Pondicherry, this one tops my list! Located on a rooftop, it offers spectacular views of the White Town. It offers a variety of cuisines, some of them being continental, seafood, and south Indian. Something as simple as appam (a famous south Indian pancake made of rice flour) and mutton curry is a bestseller here. It is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with breaks in between. A meal here will cost you around ₹800.

Fun facts about Pondicherry

  • It has the third-largest Gandhi statue located in White Town, which is about 4 metres tall.
  • It is the only place where you can go scuba diving on India’s East Coast. How cool is that?
  • The famous Rock Beach has rocks, not sand.
  • Pondicherry celebrates its own Independence Day on the 16th of August (the rest of the country celebrates it on the 15th of August!).

And it comes to an end…

Well, that’s it for this blog. I hope this blog helped you understand what Pondicherry has to offer. I would highly recommend you to plan a solo trip to Pondicherry because there is nothing like it, trust me! And if you would like to explore everything that Pondicherry has to offer, click  here .

If you happen to travel to Pondicherry, I would love to know about your experiences in the comments section. And if you have any doubts regarding anything related to Pondicherry, feel free to ask about it in the comments section.
