What is the line? Explora Journeys

Name of ship? Explora I

Passenger occupancy? 922

Itinerary? Maiden journey; Northern Europe

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for?

The third-largest cruise brand in the world, European cruise line MSC, announced its plans to move into the ultra-luxury market in 2018 and in the years since brought Explora Journeys from ideation to realty. The new arm of the business brings a completely new identity to both the MSC family and the medium cruise category, harkening its design, ethos, and service style more akin to a superyacht or boutique resort, than what is expected for a cruise ship. Explora Journeys has plans to launch five other Explora ships in the next four years.

Tell us about the ship in general

Explora I , which launched in 2023, had years of thought put into the collaborative ship design by Martin Francis, SMC Design, AD Associates, De Jorio Luxury and Yacht Projects. The result offers smart compartmentalized interiors that bleed out into the intentional exterior spaces—creating intimate gathering spaces that never feel overly crowded, or disconnected from the sea. There are four heated salt water swimming pools and over 10,440 sq. ft. of wellness facilities spread across the indoor and outdoor areas of the ship. The wellness slant is noticeable everywhere on board from the spacious spa facilities and the fitness areas (one of which is the first dedicated outdoor fitness space at sea) with the latest Technogym equipment to the turndown amenities, like the Aromatherapy Associates shower essential oils, which I found particularly relaxing. The lobby bar, which is also the first impression of the ship, is a particular stand-out which is in company with The Fairmont Olympic’s The George Bar, The Campbell, and the London Edition lobby bar. The atmosphere is one of elegance. A place where you want to take your time sipping an ice-cold New York-style martini, watching the other guests go by.

Who is onboard?

And what people-watching it is. I was surprised to discover a large variety of passengers, from obviously wealthy middle-aged Europeans akin to those portrayed in Triangle of Sadness and Miu Miu-and-Zimmermann-clad ladies on a group trip to a healthy representation of young, same-sex couples and multi-generational families. With the diversity of passengers, the environment created a welcoming atmosphere in all areas of the boat, most obviously seen at the Astern Lounge during “C’est Chic,” the resident disco night, where—strangely most everyone dressed in white—was two-stepping in one joyous conflation.

Describe the cabins

The Explora I is unique in that it offers 461 ocean front suites, each with floor-to-ceiling windows and private terraces. There are no interior-facing or balcony-less rooms. I was in a “Premier Penthouse,” a mid-tier room that had a separated living and sleeping space with a walk-in closet with a seated vanity and balcony equipped with a table, two chairs, and a chaise. The almost-entirely marble bathroom had a large vanity, a rainfall shower, and—a perk I couldn’t get enough of—heated flooring. The living area had a table for four and a comfortable sectional. The shelves were filled with curated objects, books, and games, creating a home-like atmosphere. My room came with a Technogym bag with a yoga mat, foam roller, and exercise bands, along with exercise classes built-in to the television. Even more impressive is that there was enough room in my suite to comfortably do a yoga class. But I have to say my favorite amenity of the guest room, even though there was a customized bar and Dyson supersonic hairdryer, were the auto-focusing binoculars for viewing the many archipelagos and wind farms in the North Sea.

Tell us about the crew

The crew was extremely discreet and operated in a European service style. There were some standards that I, as an American, could have gone without, such as having the female-appearing members of the party order or being served before the male-appearing ones, but overall the ambition of traditional service was appreciated. The illustrious Captain Serena Melani was seen throughout the ship, speaking with guests and ensuring everything was running smoothly outside of the bridge. Overall, the service was extremely personalized with 640 team members and a 1.25 to 1 guest to room host ratio. My room attendant offered thoughtful touches based on my behaviors, like providing extra water, sparkling and natural, after noticing that I regularly left the provided glass bottles empty and inquired what my favorite spirit was to customize the minibar.

What food and drink options are available on board?

With 11 globally-inspired culinary options available, each focused on sourcing from sustainable and local-to-the-port vendors, it is impossible to go hungry. The most notable of which is Anthology, which brings in guest chefs to create a quarterly tasting menu. During my journey, Michelin three-starred Ristorante Uliassi, located in Ancona, Italy, created an 8-course menu focusing on Adriatic seafood—the pasta with an infusion of fig leaves was exceptional. Other standouts were the steakhouse Marble & Co. Grill and the Asian-inspired Sakura. However, each dining establishment I tried left me satisfied, including the surprisingly excellent all-day dining venue Emporium Marketplace, which had made-to-order wood-fired pizza and an indulgent raw bar. The beverage program is exceptional. The house champagne is Moet & Chandon Imperial, options like Nikka Whiskey and Johnnie Walker are included at the Malt Whiskey Bar, and the wine list offers hard-to-find bottles at a surprisingly fair price point.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting?

The 7,500 sq. ft. spa has nine treatment rooms and a thermal area complete with saunas, steam rooms, a hydrotherapy pool, and even a Himalayan salt cave. I had a muscle release massage on a sea day which effectively relaxed my muscles after the 12 or more hour travels from Vancouver to Copenhagen. The treatment rooms were spacious and the massage included soft stretching and aromatherapy. The thermal area would get pretty crowded during sea days, but I popped in on one port morning and had the area to myself for over an hour.

Activities and entertainment

There was always something to do. Between lounging at the four see-and-be-seen pools there was live music, travel writing workshops, trivia, afternoon tea, pickleball lessons (on the open-air pickleball sports court), wine tastings, and what seemed to be spoken about with the most enthusiasm, the chef’s kitchen. The chef’s kitchen was a cooking class where guests are led in destination-specific recipes like Smørrebrød, where you went home with new skills on how to create a Danish open-face sandwich spread back at home.

How was the experience for families?

I saw many families during my time onboard—families with young children, skip-gen units of grandparents and teenagers, and adult children with their parents. Overall, the atmosphere is similar to one found at ultra-luxury resorts like the Four Seasons or One & Only, so if you are comfortable there with your family, Explora I will be more than suitable. There is the Nautilus Club catered to kids 6 - 17 and 82 suites are connecting for multi-generational families.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

We sailed from Copenhagen, Denmark; Göteborg, Sweden; Oslo and Stavanger, Norway; to Hamburg, Germany. The itinerary was a nice mix of small, lesser-known Scandinavian towns to popular hits like Oslo and Copenhagen. There were many excursions, group and private, available. The food-specific tours were a hit, along with the hike to the popular Pulpit Rock in Norway.

Are there any stand out sustainability or green initiatives about this cruise?

Explora Journeys does not use any single-use plastic on-board and ashore, and has implemented LNG marine fuel, which is currently the cleanest available at scale. The Explora I utilizes high-efficiency and energy-saving appliances, a Baltic Standard wastewater treatment system, and is certified for reduced underwater noise. They are committed to reach net-zero by 2050 and supports environmental causes through the MSC Foundation.

Finally, give a sentence or two on why the cruise is worth booking.

If you want an indulgent, elevated cruise, look no further.

A dreamy cruise

A professional service from start to finish. Linda's communication was the best I have experienced for a holiday. Amazingly responsive and warm in her communications. Our time in Cairo including the luxury Kempiniski was fabulous and our guide Mohammed was amazing. Our time on the Dahabiya Dream felt like being part of one big family. Mahmoud is a champion of a host. Ahmed a legend of hieroglyphics. Joe, Aladeen, Mimi, Adam and all the fantastic crewman are a credit to the company and treated us like Royals. We will always remember our time on your boat as you truly gave us a trip of a lifetime. For anyone considering this company. You will certainly not regret it. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. The Evans clan.

An amazing week on the Dahabiya Dream

What an amazing week we have just had on the Dahabiya Dream. We were assured that it was absolutely safe to go, given the problems in the Middle East at the moment, and that was our experience. We felt totally safe and at no point had any cause for concern. Everything went as smoothly as it possibly could have. The Dream was absolutely wonderful and all the staff so courteous and helpful. The food was excellent, Mahmoud was great, always making sure we were happy and had everything we needed and our Egyptologist Ahmed was also fabulous and incredibly knowledgeable. Both had a good sense of humour and together they helped make the holiday the success it was. Also, I mustn’t forget the 3 nights we had in Cairo. It was absolutely the right choice to have our first day at leisure relaxing in the hotel and then our guide for the rest of the time in Cairo was also excellent. We’ve come away inspired to learn more about Egypt’s incredible ancient civilisation. Thank you to all concerned.

The ‘Dream’ experience.

From the moment we arrived on Dream until we left a week later we couldn’t fault our holiday. The crew were great, every meal was fabulous, cabin extremely comfortable with good shower and loads of hot water. Our guide on board was incredibly knowledgeable and brilliant at getting us round the many temples and museums. With only 12 passengers if you like ‘small’ couldn’t recommend this cruise enough.

Dream Cruise

We have been on Nile cruises several times and this was by far our best experience. The boat is delightful and very well equipped, manned by staff who are very helpful, friendly and professional. We very much enjoyed being in a small group and the sailing experience (mostly tugged) was a welcome contrast with the large cruise boats. Meals and other services very good indeed. They were very flexible and accommodating to personal dietary needs, particularly for one of our friends who is coeliac. Apart from 4 nights on the boat the company organised 9 nights in hotels in Aswan, Luxor and Cairo and all arrangements worked perfectly. If we plan another trip to Egypt we will certainly use Explore Egypt again.

Thank you Alan very much for your feedback. We are very happy that you had enjoyed your holiday with us. Thank you

Cairo and The Nile - just perfect

We travel in March to Cairo and then flew to Luxor for a cruise to Aswan and back. From start to finish, it was fabulous - helpful assistance, knowledgeable guides and great crew - it really was the memorable holiday we wanted for our milestone birthdays. Special thanks for Mohammed, tour manager, and Ahmed, Egyptologist and guide. And Linda who did all the booking and communication. We meet some lovely couples in Cairo who travelled on to Luxor with us, and we all had a great trip. The boat was perfect, we had a private balcony for our room, and the communal dining on deck was perfect. We'll definitely look at the other destinations for 2024!

Such a fabulous week

Such a fabulous week. The boat and rooms are beautiful, the staff very attentive and the food lovely. Our gentle cruise down the Nile was so peaceful watching water buffalo, bird life, fisherman and their families. Our Egyptologist was very knowledgeable and filled us with his passion. The other guests on the boat were great company and we have all exchanged details! If you have the chance go, you will never regret being treated like Kings and Queens…..

Just returned from the most wonderful…

Just returned from the most wonderful holiday on the Dream. What an elegant way to drift down the Nile on a small 120 year old sail boat. We were pampered with freshly cooked eggs for breakfast, welcome smoothies upon our return from an outing, wonderful food and a fantastic helpful crew. The itinerary covered everything you need to see guided by a very knowledgeable guide who brought it all to life. The hot air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings was spectacular and most memorable. Holiday of a life-time

What an amazing experience!

What an amazing experience!! The crew were so incredible and so welcoming and couldn’t do enough for you. We were so grateful for them all for going above and beyond, especially with the older members of our family. Also, we learned A LOT about Ancient Egypt and it was all so interesting. Obviously once we started to hear about the problems in Gaza we were initially worried, but we genuinely had nothing to worry about. We followed the UK government guidelines and as far as we were concerned, if they were happy for us to travel, we were happy to travel and it was soooo worth it. The trip of a lifetime and would highly recommend. Do not let the war in Israel stop you from visiting Egypt. You will regret missing out on all the fun!! It was so great, we have already booked again!!

Everything about this trip was 5 star

Everything about this trip was 5 star. The boat beautiful, cabins comfortable, the food delicious, the staff who went out of their way to make everything perfect. The sites visited are amazing in themselves, but brought to life by our fantastic Egyptologist. Plus the amazing experience of sailing down the Nile! Bravo to all who made it happen! Eileen

What a fantastic experience

What a fantastic experience. We spent an extra two days in Cairo and visited Sakkara. Our brilliant guide Mohammed brought it alive. The Nile cruise was exceptional. Lovely boat, brilliant food. We learnt so much from our first-class Egyptologist, Ahmed. Special thanks must go to Mahmoud, our excellent captain and his wonderful crew. They were so friendly and helpful. Thank you!

A Dream holiday!

Stunning temples, service with big smiles, and total serenity. This is how I would describe our experience on the Dahabiya Dream - what a dream it was! Everything about our time on board exceeded our expectations, from the brilliant food, the company and sense of humour of the staff, to the knowledge and guidance of our wonderful Egyptologist. What experts you all are in the different roles you provide to make the holiday extra special. This started with excellent information and communication with Explore Egypt from day 1 of our enquiry with you. We enjoyed our time in Cairo - the pyramids could not fail to impress! And the Oberoi is beautifully quiet and the perfect place to relax, with the added bonus of the stunning house reef which we enjoyed every day. Please pass our thanks again to everyone. We would not hesitate to recommend Explore Egypt to family and friends.

This is the way to see the highlights of Egypt

Without a shadow of a doubt, this is the way to see the highlights of Egypt. The crew and back office team must have worked so hard to make everything run perfectly...accommodating Covid test requirements, storm conditions on the Nile, special trip requests. Special mentions for Mahmood and Linda. Food excellent. Dahabiya is a wonderful vessel with views so much better that from behind patio doors on a multi-story cruise ship and so much quieter as we were towed/sailed. With so few passengers, fellow travellers could make or break the trip...we considered all on board to now be friends.

Thank you so very much Mr Roberts, it was such a pleasure to sail the Nile with all of you

Why would you go on a big ship?

If you are going to Egypt, and want personal attention, then use Explore. The Dream is a delight, but it's a low-stated luxury. If you want hot tubs, a big cabin, fancy dining and an onboard gym then go on a big cruise ship. But the 9 of us on this boat watched the endless parade of huge cruise liners and just felt smug. Be warned that if there is not enough wind you will be towed as there is no engine on board. But the 'tuggi tuggi' is on a long tow rope, and the engine noise was not an issue. Waking up and opening the shutter so I could sit in bed and watch the Nile go past, with egrets and pied kingfishers right outside was the perfect start to the day.

What a fantastic holiday from start to…

What a fantastic holiday from start to finish. The crew were amazing as was our Egyptologist. None of us had any tummy troubles and the food was very plentiful and really tasty. Nothing was too much trouble. We cannot recommend this trip enough!! We visited so many wonderful places including flying to Abu Simbel. It was so peaceful being on a small boat that could moor where it wanted rather than in a large port. All the transportation was well organised and the transfers were all in air conditioned mini buses. The help given to us before we went was exceptional too. A once in a lifetime trip!

Slipping down the Nile on Dahabiya Dream

Slipping down the Nile on Dahabiya Dream was the most exhilarating, fun, educational and exotic experience. Our gentle, polite, charming crew and guides could not have been more attentive. The food was delicious. All freshly prepared daily. The whole week was the perfect mix of relaxation, history and new friendships. If you are wavering about going, do not hesitate.

A wonderful holiday on board Dahabiya Dream

My wife and I had a most wonderful holiday on board Dahabiya Dream and afterwards in Cairo. The ancient sites that we visited were fascinating and unforgettable. Cruising on this well run Victorian-style dahabiya was for us the perfect way to experience this magical river. The staff were unfailingly attentive, friendly and helpful, the guide was enthusiastic and informative, and and the food was excellent. The holiday surpassed our expectations.

Ideal for great family gathering

WOW! Perfection in every tiny detail... from beauty of the "Dream" to the smiling and expert crew. Our family of 8 senior/retired adults sailed the Nile as titled gentry of old must have done. Only, this was in modern luxury and comfort unequalled. Each member of the entire crew performed duties as the pros they are, with the single goal of making us comfortable, enlightened. informed and HAPPY! The Egyptian culture and magnificent history was alive with Ahmed's enthusiastic and informative description of each site of this rich excursion down the river of dreams. From the fantastic food prepared expertly by Aladdin to the smooth and picturesque voyage, Mahood and his crew ensure our entire venture was flawless. As a family who tries to take a special trip every two or three years, this is the ultimate! Each member fell in love with Egypt and the "Dream." Once more, please.

An unforgettable experience..

First of all, don't let the events in Gaza put you off taking this amazing trip. After reassurance from Linda at Explore Travel & Cruises, and reading FCO advice, we decided to go ahead with the holiday, and never regretted it for a moment. We didn't experience any security or safety problems whatsoever. As for the Dahabiya Dream experience, it was wonderful! This is definitely the best way to cruise down the Nile and see all of Egypt's iconic sights. After 2 manic days in Cairo, it was good to kick back and enjoy a more leisurely pace as we sailed peacefully down the Nile watching life go by. It was definitely an advantage to be able to dock away from all the big cruise ships that travel up and down the river, and certainly made the holiday a more unique and pleasant experience. The boat is comfortably furnished, with the upper deck offering many places to sit, relax or enjoy the sun. There is also a comfortable inside lounge for those chillier days and evenings. Meals were usually eaten on the upper deck, and the food was authentic Egyptian and always first class. But what makes the Dream experience so special, is definitely the staff and crew. They were all polite, welcoming and good fun. Nothing was too much trouble and we were soon put at ease and made to feel part of the Dream 'family'. Our boat manager, Mahmoud, was always attentive and made sure we always had everything we needed. And Ahmed, our very knowledgeable and professional onboard Egyptologist, did an amazing job in introducing us to the complexities of ancient Egyptian history, but always kept us laughing with his great sense of humour. All the trips to see the sights were very well organised and ran like clockwork. If you want a unique Nile experience, book this trip! I will definitely be recommending it to friends and family, and would love to go back one day

Honestly its there in the title DREAM

Honestly its there in the title, Dream. The trip was amazing. The crew onboard were amazing from start to finish making sure we had everything we needed, even giving us a wonderfull supprise dinner on the banks of the nile filled with good food, Music and dancing. The guide was amazing and made the trip that much more enjoyable knowing more about the history of each temple. The boat its self was an amazing 1920s? boat that actually carried some of the early explores over 100 years ago. It was an incredible experience from start to finish, one week was not long enough.

Enjoyable trip

After two years and at the third attempt we recently spent a very enjoyable week on the Dream. We were allocated the William Flinders Petrie cabin which while I wouldn't describe as luxurious was clean, comfortable and well equipped. The upper deck is the USP for the boat, a beautifully furnished space in which to relax and watch the daily life of local Egyptians unfold on the banks of the glorious river Nile. This was the highlight of the tour for us. The food on board was excellent, plentiful and varied. The cocktails superb. The pace of the tour was ideal, starting off gently and building up to the busier days at Luxor, Karnak and Valley of the Kings. We did the optional road trip to Abu Simbel, which is expensive but well worth the long drive. We travelled in a comfortable minibus and had a very competent driver. Although there is no engine on the boat there are two generators which make a low level droning noise which can be disturbing at night. We solved this by using our earplugs. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip which was worth the wait.

Don’t Like Cruising? This New Boutique Ship Could Be Just the Cruise for You

Newly launched cruise line explora journeys designed its vessels specifically with the cruise averse in mind. here’s a first look..

Calling all non-cruisers: Explora Journeys wants you onboard.

You won’t find any buffets aboard Explora I , the first of four ships from Geneva-based cruise company MSC Group’s newly launched cruise line Explora Journeys . Nor will you find any single-use plastics or shows that you need to rush to finish dinner to see. Gone are many of the hallmarks of a typical cruise ship, in favor of a more boutique, tailored experience.

“We’re creating a brand for the future luxury traveler,” said Jason Gelineau, head of product for Explora Journeys, during a media round table discussion in the ship’s Malt Whiskey Lounge in August, as he explained how the cruise line aims to appeal to people who have never cruised before.

I am one of those people. Aside from a journey aboard a 40-passenger ship cruising the Amazon River and an even smaller boat sailing along the Nile, I’ve never cruised. The idea of being stuck aboard a massive, impersonal ship, and herded around by a flag-toting guide on the kind of group tours I routinely have to maneuver around in my hometown of Rome never appealed to me.

Essentially, I am Explora Journeys’ target audience.

And I was skeptical, to be sure. But all in all, I think that for a non-cruiser like me, Explora Journeys offers a nice introduction to cruising—or rather, what the company prefers to call an “ocean state of mind.” When creating the brand, Explora looked not to other cruise ships, but to yachts and luxury hotel brands like Belmond, Cheval Blanc, and Ritz-Carlton for inspiration. It was also consciously designed to feel like a European brand, from the subdued interiors to the entertainment programming and the choice of incorporating European brands like Frette linens, Illy (the well-known Italian espresso brand, which is served throughout the ship at all the restaurants and in the suites), and the first Rolex boutique at sea. Quite fitting, as MSC is a Geneva-based family-run company created by Neapolitan ferry captain Gianluigi Aponte.

Explora I’s maiden journey kicked off in Copenhagen in August 2023 and it’s currently in the midst of a grand world tour. I was able to get a first look at the ship on a sailing from Hamburg to Southampton in August—and these were my main takeaways.

The Explora I lobby features soaring ceilings and a central bar area

The Explora I lobby makes a striking first impression.

First impressions of ’ Explora I ’

Seen from afar, the 922-passenger Explora I cuts a rather sleek silhouette. Upon boarding, I found myself in the lobby, which manages to feel grand and intimate at the same time with its soaring ceilings. The design is sophisticated and timeless, with a muted color scheme and artful touches like an installation by British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare of books from the British Library’s collection wrapped in African fabrics. An art gallery on deck five displays rotating exhibitions of paintings and photographs from the destinations throughout the world where the ship docks.

I was pleased to discover that the ship has plenty of outdoor spaces, including three outdoor pools. Of the total 178,680 square feet of public space, 67,275 square feet (more than a third) is outdoor space. I spent some time relaxing by the Atoll pool flanked by plush sunbeds on deck 10, and though it was a bit too chilly for me on the North Sea, there were plenty of people out there sunbathing. The pools will be a major asset when the ship is sailing in warmer destinations such as the Mediterranean and Caribbean.

As someone who spends a lot of time visiting boutique hotels throughout Europe, and especially loves road tripping, I struggled a bit with the idea of having only a few hours in each port. But I appreciated the similarities between this vessel and land-based resorts and the appeal of not having to unpack and repack my bags at every stop on a trip.

the Sakura restaurant on the new Explora I boutique cruise ship features an elaborate cherry blossom tree decoration above the seating area

The pan-Asian restaurant Sakura was the writer’s favorite onboard dining venue.

Where to eat on ’ Explora I ’

Explora I has nine dining options, in addition to five bars and lounges. According to Gelineau, the idea was not to have one main restaurant but rather a collection of distinct dining outlets, each with its own concept.

Emporium Marketplace is the closest thing to a buffet. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, it has a handful of stations where guests can choose from items like pastries, freshly made juices and smoothies, and eggs made to order. Then there are four sit-down restaurants where you order á la carte. Of these, my favorite was Sakura, the pan-Asian restaurant where I sampled sushi, lobster pad thai, and slow-cooked short rib beef Penang curry. At the Med Yacht Club, I enjoyed Middle Eastern-style mezze and the pasta of the day. Marble & Co. is a European-style steakhouse that serves German and Swedish beef, as well as seafood and caviar. The French restaurant, Fil Rouge, serves breakfast á la carte, unlike the other sit-down restaurants, which are not open for breakfast.

Passengers can grab a more casual meal at the Emporium Marketplace.

If guests are feeling hungry between meals, they can grab a snack and Illy espresso from Crema Café or head to the Gelateria & Creperie by the Conservatory pool to satisfy a sweet tooth.

In addition to these, there are two gourmet options that come with an extra charge: the Chef’s Kitchen and Anthology, the latter of which operates as a sort of pop-up concept with rotating chefs who sign on for a three-month stint. While we were onboard, the chef in residence was Mauro Uliassi of the Michelin three-starred Ristorante Uliassi on Italy’s Adriatic coast. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to try either of these options, but my companions who had the tasting menu at Anthology raved about it. A cooking course at the chef’s kitchen costs €150 per person (US$161, based on current conversion rates), while Anthology’s tasting menu costs €190 per person (or US$204) with an optional wine pairing for €75 per person (US$80). Reservations are recommended for lunch and dinner at all the sit-down restaurants to ensure that they can accommodate all the guests.

Image of a suite on Explora I with a bed, sitting area, and balcony

On Explora I , there really isn’t a bad room, er suite, in the house.

All-suite accommodations

There are 461 suites, penthouses, and residences across five categories on the Explora I . All are oceanfront, with floor-to-ceiling windows and a private terrace with a daybed and dining area. The entry-level suites are among the largest for ocean ships of this size, at 377 square feet. In addition to a comfortable bed, small sofa, bathroom with bespoke bath products, and a walk-in closet, the suites all have thoughtful amenities like a Dyson hair dryer and Illy espresso machine. The most opulent is the Owner’s Residence, which measures 3,014 square feet and has a living and dining area with a fireplace, a private terrace with a whirlpool, and butler service.

Explora Journeys ’ take on shore excursions and sustainability

MSC Group has pledged to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Explora I is equipped with catalytic reduction technology that reduces nitrogen oxide emissions by 90 percent. Like MSC World Europa , future Explora Journeys ships ( Explora III , Explora IV , Explora V , and Explora VI ) will run on liquified natural gas (LNG), which is currently the cleanest marine fuel available at scale and has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by 25 percent. And those same forthcoming vessels will also be hydrogen-powered, according to the company. Explora Journeys’ ships are being designed with an eye toward a greener future. They have a dedicated space for battery storage to allow future hybrid power generation when that technology becomes more widely available.

In Explora I’s staterooms, large glass bottles of water are replenished daily and reusable Explora Journeys-branded bottles are provided so guests don’t need to buy plastic bottles of water onshore. Throughout the ship, LED lights and high-efficiency appliances have been put in place.

For Explora Journeys, sustainability is not only about reducing emissions and energy consumption but also about inclusivity and making sure that the ship doesn’t have a harmful impact on the ports it visits. Inclusivity is especially important to Captain Serena Melani, who told me that 50 percent of the staff working on the bridge with her are female.

According to Sacha Rougier, head of itinerary planning and shore experiences, the biggest challenge is creating itineraries that balance the famous destinations that entice people to book with under-the-radar ports that don’t get more than one ship per week. Though Explora Journeys will go to some ports that suffer from overtourism, like Venice and Dubrovnik, the company will try to avoid the busiest days or find other ways to escape the crowds, by arriving in the evening, bringing guests ashore for night tours, and departing early in the morning before other ships arrive. It is also asking the tour operators it works with to do Travelife’s sustainability courses , which helps tour operators manage and improve their social and environmental impact.

As to be expected with any new brand, there are still some kinks to work out. Though Rougier told us during a media round table that the company wants to avoid big bus tours with headsets, that’s exactly what we found on a shore excursion in Bruges. I did, however, enjoy the chocolate-making workshop and the private visit to Adornes Domein , where we were granted exclusive access to Count and Countess Maximilien de Limburg Stirum’s private mansion, which has been in the family for 17 generations.

A world tour

After crossing the Atlantic this month, Explora I will stop in New York and Canada before continuing south along the Atlantic coast toward the Caribbean for the winter. It will then cross the Panama Canal, head north along the Mexican coast, and spend spring 2024 sailing the Pacific coast and Hawaii. before traversing the Atlantic again to spend summer 2024 in the Mediterranean, Aegean, and Adriatic.

A “hop-on-hop-off” system is not currently in place, but guests can combine multiple journeys, creating extended itineraries. The average starting rate is €650 (US$698) per person per night.

An excellent, well managed and easy trip

We have had an excellent trip on the Dream Dahabiya. We only did half of the cruise, stopping in Aswan where we wanted to stay longer. The company was able to accomodate this perfectly and was super reponsive in all our communications. Our time on the Dream was a delight with a very cohesive , friendly and efficient crew, very well managed by Mahmoud. Delicious and fresh egyptian food . We had very good visits with Ahmed the egyptologist and had good fun with the other passengers. It is a family run company and it show in the personal attention to all details.

The most beautiful way to sail the Nile

To be honest, our trip exceeded all expectations and I cannot express how beautiful sailing down the Nile was. The Dream is gorgeous and I think we all felt like royalty as we cruised along. The tours were great and the knowledge that Ahmed has, and shared with us was without a doubt amazing! He had a way of engaging both the adults and children, and my daughters certainly cannot wait to study Ancient Egypt! The crew were all fabulous and get the balance between being there when needed and giving us time to just relax etc absolutely right. We all made memories we won't forget! Thank you to you all and maybe one day I’ll be lucky enough to return for more fun, laughter and relaxation.

Luxurious, Safe, Amazing. Once in a lifetime experience

I have nothing but great things to say about the boat, crew, AMAZING FOOD, and the second home I could call the Dream. The crew made us all feel welcome and like family for our week stay on the ship. I felt so SAFE on each excursion and every port having a great guide with us in each moment of the trip. Can’t wait to sail with them again!

We had an extraordinary week on the Dream. The crew was extremly caring, the food was tasty, always fresh, the organisation was smooth and effectiv. On the excursions we enjoyed a very likable guide with very good knowledge and the ability never beeing boring. We learnt a lot with fun.

Thank You, it was a pleasure to sail the Nile with you

A Dream in every sense of the word

Just returned from a wonderful week on the Dahabiya Dream. The holiday exceeded our expectations and this was because of the boat and the crew who looked after us. Nothing was too much trouble, we were treated like Kings and Queens as we majestically sailed down the Nile. I could not recommend this highly enough. I wish I was still onboard !!

Date of experience : January 23, 2023

I chose this fabulous holiday largely on the strength of these glowing reviews, all of which I agree with.Although at 81 I was a little anxious about my ability to cope, Mahmoud, Ahmet and the rest of the crew took such good care of us that a week on the Dream has taken years off me! The trip to Abu Simbel was the highlight of my son’s holiday and we loved the balloon ride. The balance of relaxation and activity is very well judged. When you compare the cost of a week on the Dream with that of a similar cabin on board a European river cruise this is amazing value for money, with better food and incomparable service. Thank you to all for such a memorable experience

This is the way to cruise down the Nile…

This is the way to cruise down the Nile in style on a beautiful original sailing boat with mahogany Victorian style bedrooms and a wonderful deck to lunch and dine on in total silence as you watch the noisy vibrating diesel smell of the modern boats and praise your lucky stars you are not on one of those with two hundred passengers ! This boat makes your trip to Egypt highly memorable and we are so glad we did not opt for a cross channel type ferry ! This feels like a private charter yacht and you are treated as such. We opted for the eight night trip and spent two nights in Cairo to see the pyramids and then flew down to Luxor to catch the boat. Would recommend the trip (preferably by land) to Abu Simbel and watch the dawn rise over the sand dunes. In Aswan try and get the company to book you dinner in the Old Cataract Hotel in the Oriental Restaurant down by the river. In Cairo ask the company to upgrade you to a room with a pyramid view.

Don't be afraid to try this, even if you're alone....

I made the rather scary decision to take what, to me, was a once-in-a-lifetime holiday, after losing my husband two years ago. I booked the holiday on the Dahabiya Dream right after my husband died, but ended up waiting two years because of Covid. I was terrified of making such a big trip but Linda helped me through every step and reassured me that I would be taken care of all the way. I can say that I was treated like a queen and had help to navigate the entire process. I loved the whole trip, but my week on the Dahabiya Dream was the highlight. I will never forget the experience and the friends I made. When my holiday ended I was sad to leave Egypt. I'll remember this forever.

A Dream came true....

What can I say? The dream of a cruise down the Nile came true! The Dahabiya Dream exceeded all our expectations in all ways. From our arrival to our leaving, Mahmoud and the friendly and attentive crew looked after us every step of the way. The food was perfect, our cabin was well looked after, the beautiful refreshing drink and scented towels on our return from trips out was a wonderful attention to detail. Ahmed, our Egyptologist was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic, he brought Ancient Egypt to life. We felt that our safety and comfort were top priority for the whole crew and nothing was too much trouble. Also, the whole booking process from initial enquiry through to arrival was so straight forward and Mo made it all so very easy. Thank you for a wonderful experience and I will definitely be recommending this trip to anyone who wants to do a Nile cruise.

The most perfect holiday on the most beautiful boat with the best crew

For many years we wanted to visit Egypt. With the Gaza events we have been wondering if we would go, but the UK Foreign Office advice for Cairo and the Nile showed that it is safe. Linda who has been very professional in helping us organising our tour also reassured us so we decided to go. And we were right: we have felt completely and 100% safe during the whole trip. Not only safe but also welcomed as Egyptians are very friendly. During our 2 days in Cairo and 8 days on the Nile we have seen all the wonders of ancient Egypt that we came for. And they are really worth the trip. We have learned a lot thanks to our guide Mohamed in Cairo to Ahmed during the cruise. Ahmed has a PhD in egyptology and is the most knowledgeable guide one can find between Luxor and Aswan. The silent and slow pace cruise on the Nile offers stunning landscapes, sunrises and sunsets, and the local life (houses, farmers, fishermen, children playing, …) is extremely picturesque. We saw many species of birds (herons, egrets, king fishers, ibis, red kites, …), do not forget to bring your binoculars. Photography is one of my hobbies and the light was absolutely magical. But what has made our trip so special is the Dahabiya Dream and its crew. All Dahabiyas are small ships in comparison with other ships cruising the Nile, but Dream is special in that it is an old ship which has been entirely restored back to its original splendour. The deck, the cabins and the small lounge are absolutely magnificent with all the old wood. We had one of the suite at the back of the boat with a private balcony opening on the Nile: the perfect place for an early morning coffee. The boat never docked with the bigger boats which are very noisy and smelling of gasoil, but always on docking areas reserved for the smaller sailing boats. Last but not least every member of the crew is extremely professional, friendly and helpful. They all go at great length in making the experience a true dream. The boat manager Mahmoud pays attention to every detail, from safety to comfort. Youssef has attended to every of our needs with a smile, while Adam has surprised us every day decorating our room. The cuisine prepared by chef Alaa and sous-chef Mohamed is delicious and varied. We have enjoyed many Egyptian dishes and desserts. While taking care of the boat Captain Mahmoud, Mohamed and Hassan have been extremely friendly. This crew feels more likely a family, and they create a wonderful atmosphere for the guests. We are grateful to everyone at Explore Travel & Cruises for this amazing experience.

Thank you Christophe so very much for your feedback. It was a pleasure sailing the Nile with you and I know the boys on Dream had a great week with all of you. We are so happy you had such a good time. Thank you

One of the best trips of our lives.

Visiting Egypt with all it’s cultural wonders has been a long time dream of ours that came true in March 2023. The experience started a few months earlier when Linda crafted an itineray including all internal flights, hotels and guides in Egypt including the stay at the Dahibiya. She was very responsive and accomodating to make sure the itinerary was optimal for us. I was overwhelmed when visiting the Pyramids, standing face to face with Ramses in Abu Simbel, or admiring tutankhamun’s mask. The highlight of our trip was our stay at the Dream. I don’t know what to write without copying all positive earlier comments since they all reflect back to our experience. The lovely rooms, the beautiful deck, the wonderful food, the interesting visits of tempels and monuments. All were grand. What turned our stay from a cruise into an experience was the staff who with their kindness and attention made us feel welcome and special. Thank you all for making our stay such a wonderfull experience. Our stay at the Dream was one of the best trips we ever made! (And we’ve made a few)

Excellent right from the initial contact

We had high hopes for the Nile cruise beforehand, as the organisation from Explore Egypt had been excellent from the start. We were not disappointed! From our arrival in Egypt to our departure, the organisation went to plan - we were met on time everywhere and the boat schedule was excellent with plenty of time to see the sights. The boat crew were excellent throughout, from the initial warm welcome to our leaving. Mahmood, the cruise manager was friendly, very helpful and professional. He was extremely knowledgeable and was great company at dinner. Ahmed, our guide, really brought the sites we visited to life with his incredible knowledge and friendly personality. This was certainly the way to see the Nile and the sites en route - a small ‘boutique’ boat, beautifully restored and very comfortable. On seeing the large, impersonal cruise boats on the river we knew we had definitely made the right choice with the Dahabiya Dream and would throughly recommend Explore Egypt as the Company to go with.

First Class Trip, fantastic Crew

thanks to everyone involved in making our Luxor to Aswan trip really memorable. It was great that all on board (10 paying guests) gelled as a group. The crew were first class and nothing was too much trouble. The 'natural' remedies worked wonders. Special thanks to Mahmood, Adam and Zac for all they did for John when he was a little under the weather. The boat was wonderful and the welcome and goodbye parties such good fun. Hassen & MeMe ensured that everyone joined in, especially me!! It was a shame that we were unable to 'sail' from Aswan back to Luxor, but the weather was wrong. We Brits are used to that!! All excursions off the boat were extremely well organised and Ahmed was a very knowledgeable and passionate egyptologist. We just hope he fulfils his dream. John & I highly recommend the Dahabiya Dream cruise to anyone who is seeking the personal touch, small group experience. We still miss Mahmood's personal call to the meal table!! If you want to know what it is, you will have to book a trip.

Dream Wonder

Our trip on the Dahabiya Dream was just wonderful. A great way to visit key sites along the Nile in a small group and learn its history with the onboard guide. Our cabin had its own small balcony and was very comfortable. Food on board was fresh and tasty and the friendly crew looked after us very well.

Superb in every way

An absolutely amazing and memorable holiday. Everything ran like clockwork. The hotel in Cairo was superb as was the extension in Hurghada. On board the Dream was a real privilege. All the crew were so lovely, involving us all as a family on board for the week. Our fellow sailors were great company and we all had such fun together. Mahmoud was a great host along with Captain Mohammed , Zak , Mimi and everyone. How our chef managed to create the delicious dishes which were both tasty and varied, beggars belief in a small galley. Our rooms were fabulous and we enjoyed the outside space when sailing. A truly amazing experience sailing along the Nile, watching everyday life as we went by. Ahmed our guide was so knowledgeable and fun, enabling us to gain some insight into the days of the Pharaohs. I hope we didn’t dismay him too much when we gave the wrong answers to his questions ! We all felt so much at home with just the right balance of culture during our stops and sunbathing on the deck. It has given us a real taste for small group cruising; we were so lucky having only 7 of us for most of the journey. It was a delight meeting like minded people, enjoying their company and learning a little about the life in today´s Egypt. Thank you so much Linda also for her excellent communication and organisation. As seasoned travellers ourselves we would highly recommend this to everyone.

The Dahabiya Dream for a magical Nile Cruise

If you have a genuine interest in Egyptology and all things Egyptian a Nile cruise on the Dahabiya Dream is the choice for you. A beautiful replica of a dahabiya sailing boat. With only 6 guest cabins it feels like a private charter. My husband and I with 2 other couples went on the Dream a couple years ago. The experience was amazing. Of course all the sites we visited during our week cruise were magical but staying on the Dream was equally so. To get to spend a week in the comfort of this boat, tasting the amazing local foods served elegantly every day on board only topped by the wonderful staff and crew who took brilliant care of us, shared their stories, humour and lives with us. We learnt so much from the very knowledgeable guest lecturer on board about the history of this very special nation. But we came away with not only a more intense interest in Egypt’s mythology but learnt from this cruise that the true magic of Eygpt is the Egyptians. Highly recommend anyone wanting to cruise the Nile to choose The Dahabiya Dream.

Wonderful experience

My experience on this cruise was nothing short of perfection. I went with my family. Ahmed, the Egyptologist, hosted us through our journeys of ancient Egypt. His knowledge and enthusiasm of the subject was engrossing. Mahmoud is a wonder! He keeps up with everything with so much energy! He seems to be master of everything on this boat. The food was great! Everything was so fresh! Aladin is a wonderful cook! The entire crew took such good care of us. I felt pampered and safe. They all became as family to me It was a teary farewell when the cruise was over. I really felt like this was a home away from home. I will be coming back to see my Egyptian family as soon as I possibly can

Perfect Trip from Start to Finish

From the moment we booked our trip and moved it multiple times (covid) Linda was with us to answer queries, amend the schedule to include our desire to spend time in Cairo. The boat and crew are amazing, friendly and professional. If you want a perfect small boat cruise this is the one to do. The food was varied and very good. I was presented with a birthday cake too. By the end of our cruise we felt we were family. Our guide was very knowledgeable and every question we had was answered in detail. I felt I was a queen for the whole holiday. I can’t wait to return and spend more time with the team.

A Review of Explora Journeys: An Upscale Ocean Adventure

A Review of Explora Journeys: An Upscale Ocean Adventure

Although a fairly recent cruise experience, Explora Journeys is backed by a rich maritime heritage. An Insider feature shares that the  MSC Group —a family-owned cruise ship company—first unveiled the new luxury cruise line in June 2021 and aims to grow its fleet to six ships by 2028. Explora Journeys cruises are perfect for individuals seeking highly-curated and transformational travel experiences. A company statement published in a 2021 Travel + Leisure write-up shared that “Explora Journeys will bring guests to lesser-travelled harbours to enjoy a more authentic experience and a slower pace of travel.”

With that in mind, this review will explore how exactly the trips chartered by Explora Luxury Cruises can provide an upscale ocean adventure.

Table of Contents

Explora voyages.

Explora Luxury Cruises  allows you to take your pick from exceptional destinations. These include Alaska, Africa, and the Mediterranean, and a tour of Northern Europe, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. Each voyage is tailored to highlight different interests, be it culinary, culture, history, or nature.

For instance, select the Explora voyage to Northern Europe, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. You’ll soon be immersed in a sweeping adventure, from the art and culture of Europe’s renowned cities to the culinary delights that await you at each stop. Or perhaps you’re hoping to harness the restorative power of nature during your vacation? Don’t fret, as Explora Journeys offers a journey through Iceland’s fascinating natural sights, which include geysers, glaciers, and wild waterfalls.

Apart from that, this is what you can expect from the other top-of-the-line offerings aboard Explora cruises:

Review of Explora Journey reviews - Europe cruises

Mediterranean & Western Europe

As shared by a 2022 Cruise Lowdown feature, Explora Journey’s Mediterranean destination experiences prioritise your well-being. They provide intimate groups access to one-of-a-kind moments, such as a thrilling Citroen 2CV drive through Normandy, forest therapy near Porto, Portugal, and yoga flow at dusk in Ibiza, Spain. You can book an exclusive visit to the Pope’s summer residence in Castel Gandolfo to cap these activities off. If you’re more interested in arts and culture, you may opt for a private cocktail party at the National Palace and Gardens of Queluz.

Review of Explora journeys cruises - a trip through Alaska

My post,  ‘Best Adventure Travel Destinations Around the World,’  described Alaska as an ideal tourist spot for adventure lovers. This country is dotted with several amazing hiking trails at Denali National Park, but you can also enjoy winter sports like skiing and snowboarding at Fairbanks. However, if you want to elevate your trip to Alaska, then Explora Luxury Cruise has you covered. The voyage immerses you in beautiful landscapes, such as the Mendenhall Glacier, which allows you to observe brown bears and humpback whales. If you’re a history enthusiast, the cruise also provides a tour through Alaska’s various museums and military forts, allowing you to glimpse captivating art and artefacts.

On board the ship

The vessels by Explora Luxury Cruises are equipped with outstanding amenities, including a diverse selection of bars, lounges, restaurants, wellness facilities, onboard entertainment, and four swimming pools. Given these superb features, it’s only right that the staterooms are equally glamorous. According to the Insider article, travellers may pay approximately €430/$470 per night for a two-person Ocean Terrace Suite.

Review of Explora Journey Suites

Ocean Terrace and Ocean Grand Terrace suites in this luxury cruise start at 377 square feet, and they contain a bedroom, a living room, a walk-in closet, and a modern bathroom. These accommodations also offer espresso machines and heated bathroom floors. As a bonus, guests can request daybeds and a dining set should they want to lounge and enjoy the sun on the terrace. Those interested in watching passing wildlife may also utilise the binoculars available at the suite.

Now, if you’re travelling with a loved one with disabilities, then don’t worry. A 2022 USA Today write-up on Explora Journeys states that passengers needing special assistance can be provided with motorised scooters, oxygen therapy, or wheelchairs. You’ll need to inform the company before the final payment to ensure you can secure these items.

World-class features

Aboard Explora Luxury Cruises, you’ll find nine distinct cuisines crafted by the company’s well-travelled and worldly chefs and beverage experts. Interestingly, a 2022 Cruising Journal article shares that Explora I, Explora Journey’s recently unveiled cruise line, will elevate the cruise’s gastronomic fare.

The Med Yacht Club is a homage to MSC Cruise’s home in the Mediterranean. The restaurant is reminiscent of a beachside food establishment— and if you’re a vegetarian, you’ll be happy to know that they have wholesome, plant-based Mediterranean offerings.

Health & Leisure

Explora’s all-inclusive journeys have always prioritised helping guests relax and rejuvenate. You can see this in their state-of-the-art spa thermal area and a wide array of well-being and fitness programmes. Notably, according to a 2022 European Spa report, Explora Journeys has recently unveiled details of Ocean Wellness—an offering aboard the Explora I that includes a Finnish sauna, hydrotherapy pool, and salt cave.

Review of Explora Journeys wellness facilities

Underscoring the desire to promote great health, the ship has outdoor fitness facilities like a running track and sports court. Besides this, the Fitness Centre will contain modern Technogym Artis equipment. If you want to train from the comfort of your suite, utilise a virtual coach via Technogym Bench, which allows you to access a digital library of guided video exercises with trainers.

Explora Cruises Tips

Now that you’re well-versed in the outstanding amenities and experiences that Explore Luxury Cruises provides, below are two important tips that can help you enjoy a smoother voyage:

Since going through customs is mandatory before embarking and disembarking the ship, research the regulations in each country you’re stopping at. For instance, if you’re travelling through the Mediterranean, read up on customs policies in places like Athens, Barcelona, Corsica, Israel, and St. Tropez.

Although it’s ideal to book Destination Experiences before your voyage, it’s understandable to want to enlist in new programmes once you’re fully immersed in the journey. Thankfully guests can book, change, and cancel their Destination Experiences at a designated location onboard. You can also secure two Destination Experiences scheduled within a day, so long as there are at least 30 minutes between the first programme’s arrival back onboard time and the second one’s departure time.

All in all, Explora Cruises is an excellent form of ocean travel that can guarantee you luxe experiences—whether onboard or in any of its wonderful destinations.

A boutique resort at sea: What to expect from new luxe cruise line Explora Journeys

explore travel and cruises reviews

When Explora Journeys CEO Michael Ungerer shares a picture of the lobby in the cruise line's first ship, he gets the same question over and over. "What hotel is that?'" he told USA TODAY in an interview.

That's what the new luxury line from the MSC Group is going for. The brand will launch the first of six planned vessels, Explora I, in the summer of 2023, and is aiming to provide an intimate ocean cruising experience, more like a floating boutique resort than a traditional cruise ship.

That applies to the itineraries, which will take passengers places larger ships may not, as well as the accommodations, which consist of 461 suites designed to feel as homey as they do luxe. "Home away from home is a very overused phrase so we call it 'Homes at Sea,'" Ungerer said.

Where will Explora I sail?

Explora I will sail its maiden voyage on July 17, 2023, from Southampton in the United Kingdom to Copenhagen, Denmark. The 16-day sailing includes stops in Bruges, Belgium; Brønnøysund, Norway; and Skagen in Denmark, according to the line's website .

The ship will sail a diverse collection of itineraries in Northern Europe, the East Coast of the U.S., South America and more, visiting nearly 140 ports in more than 40 countries during its first year of service.

Explora Journeys' sailings will visit a "mix of on and off the beaten path" destinations, Ungerer said.

What can passengers expect from Explora I?

The line will forgo main dining rooms in favor of smaller restaurants and prioritize live entertainment like cabaret performances over flashy, Vegas-style shows, Ungerer said.

Explora I will have six restaurants, including Sakura serving Pan-Asian cuisine, European steakhouse Marble & Co. Grill, and the Mediterranean-inspired Med Yacht Club. There will also be 12 bars and lounges, along with amenities including four swimming pools, private cabanas, a spa, and a running track with sweeping ocean views.

Each of Explora I's rooms, which range from 377 to more than 3,000 square feet, will feature floor-to-ceiling windows, private terraces, and walk-in closets with vanities. The ship's accommodations include 82 connecting suites, well-suited for those traveling with family and friends, according to the line's website .

What else do passengers need to know?

Prices vary depending on the itinerary, but Explora I's 16-day maiden voyage starts at $18,500 for an Ocean Terrace Suite, based on double occupancy. The fare includes food, beverages such as wine and specialty coffees, gratuities, and Wi-Fi, according to the line's website .

Sailing with children: 11 cruises you need to take while the kids are still young

Flights for the entire trip from New York start at $978 for economy and $3,719 for business class, according to Google Flights .

Explora Journeys will have accessible cabins on its ships for guests with disabilities. The line asks passengers "in need of special services during their journey, or needing to travel with medical apparatus, including wheelchairs, motorised scooters or oxygen therapy" to let the line know in writing before their final payment is due, according to its website .

Do not use USAA member perks! There was a mistake in my booking and my money was kept without me staying at the hotel. I will never do this again

Photo of Tom N.

I almost booked a cruise thru USAA's Member Travel Privledges(MTP). There was a savings to book thru MTP but I was speaking with a third party located in Potugal. After putting a hold on a cruise cabin I checked the reviews on the Internet. MTP has 11/2 stars. This is very low considering you must give one star to do any revue. Problems with communication, areangements and general errors on almost all bookings thru MTP. Check them yourself. I immediately cancelled my hold thru Member Travel Services and booked thru AAA. I am surprised USAA would refer members to such an incompetent third oarty but very difficult to send complaint.

Photo of Robert M.

I needed to report fraud against Travel Member Services when this company charged my card without my knowledge. I paid for travel insurance and they added thousands to the paid cruise booking! Beware this is a scam company...not USAA. Reporting them to USAA didn't help one bit and I love USAA! Robert

Worst travel experience ever and we have done over 50 cruises. Took five contacts and 2 1/2 hours with different agents none of whom could answer simple questions and we knew what ship, what date, what room type and it was a family event. The fifth finally got the cruise set up but somehow convinced me to just make the minimum payment ( we can remember only once ever doing that we always pay the full amount up front). Was told they would pay the amount due with our credit card and let us know when it was due. There was more dealing with a second cruise tied in with this cruise but with supervisors lack of response we made it with a different agency in 15 minutes. Now the really bad part. They did not pay the remainder and did not contact us to make payment so the cruise line cancelled the reservation resulting in a loss of deposit, trip insurance and payment to this company amounting to 886.72 dollars. They claimed to have called and left messages and email with no response. I have all emails and phone messages from the dates they gave and none arrived. NO Refunds or even an apology. Ask for a supervisor and was blown off again. Never again USAA dump this scam service company. Clint E

Ellie was my agent. I believe she is in Texas. She was patient, thorough, kind & spoke clearly. She also found the fare I had identified on the website which was lower than the one listed at the time of my call. Her effort saved me $ & made me feel appreciated as a customer. Never thought that spending $3000 would be a good experience; with Ellie it was.

Buyer Beware! Do not jump to purchase the World Wide Protector Plan insurance that USAA offers with their cruise package. You must pay for the plan with purchase of the cruise but have only 14 days to cancel. Over the past 55 years I've trusted USAA to look out for me. So I failed to read the Policy's reviews (read those of customers who make claims) or to examine its details. I'm a. senior (79yr.) who ended up cancelling my trip early because of a physical problem. By cancelling the cruise 120 days before the sail date, Viking only penalizes $100/per person. But the insurance premium (mine was $1891) is totally nonrefundable. Take the time to examine other travel insurance polices before purchasing USAA's offering. Do not trust while succumbing to pressure as I did!

Just plain BAD experience. I received a phone call from Stephanie Gallegos (855) 515-4190 x4041 on 10/17/2022 regarding what I believed to be excessive charges for two staterooms/five people on a cruise I booked 09/13/2022 with Our Vacation Center of Scottsdale AZ (aka OurVacationStore.com, dba USAA Member Travel Privileges). She offered to issue cruise credits into each of our two stateroom accounts. So far: NOTHING. Multiple phone messages have been left for her: NO RESPONSE. I will NOT be conducting business with USAA Travel, Member Travel Privileges, Our Vacation Center or OurVacationCenter.com ever again.

Photo of Kelli S.

Made a reservation for a cruise, the sales person was more concerned about the commission (seriously he said "wow" when he looked the commission and so unprofessional) than helping me. Several mistakes made, one costing me about $1k. In I applied credit that I lost. Have used in the past and had good customer service (8 years ago) Not using again.

Photo of Linda A.

Very deceptive. Their site listed the cruise line's price, and then their price as a $1200.00 savings. However, after booking with USAA, I went to the Princess site. The Princess fare that USAA used as comparison was the upgraded Perks Plus fare. What they sold me was the standard fare without any of the extra perks. And what they charged me was actually the same as the Princess standard fare. However, if I had gone thru Princess, I would have also gotten an on board credit, which USAA did not give e. The agent started out by saying that my USAA vacation credits were about to expire. Unfortunately, I trusted and booked right away. No where in the cost did that vacation credit come into play--no discount, because the cost per room was the same as the Princess advertised price.

Photo of Mitzi B.

I booked two trips through Member Travel Privileges this year. With the first experience, the agent never offered the opportunity to purchase travel insurance and there were long holds while he communicated with the tour company directly. Travel insurance seems important at this time to me -- you never know when a locale will institute new restrictions or whatever. I was shocked when I got my invoice via email stating I had declined travel insurance. There did not seem to be level of expertise or customer service that I normally associate with USAA. So disappointing! I decided maybe I'd just had a rookie agent so I tried again booking another trip for later. This one a cruise. While the agent seemed more knowledgeable, he neglected to apply the savings discount for double occupancy to my booking. That cost me probably $300 - $350. Although I was sure to ask for travel insurance this go-round, again, when I got my invoice it said "travel insurance declined". I was able to clear it up directly with the cruise company - that was my last resort because calls to the agent I dealt with went unreturned. This time, I neglected to ask for a detailed breakdown of the expenses (airfare, travel insurance and per person cruise, etc.) I might have caught the error there, but to say the least, I'm disappointed with the level of service and expect so much more from companies USAA chooses to affiliate with. Very disappointed. Buyer beware and learn from my mistakes if you choose to use this.

Editoral Review of Explore!

Why explore, unforgettable experiences.

On our trips you'll see a mix of famous sights and hidden gems that others miss, or don't even know about. As travelers, we want to experience a country, not merely observe it. We'll take you closer to the country, its culture and people, often in unscripted, spontaneous, impossible-to-replicate ways. You'll come home having seen and experienced the country in a way that other travelers might never have.

Expert local guides

As your resident expert, your guide (or tour leader) will use their insider knowledge and local connections to make the most of unexpected opportunities. You might be invited to watch the sunrise from a lighthouse or to join family Diwali celebrations. They'll be on hand to make sure your trip goes smoothly, taking care of logistics. Our tour leaders are all hand-picked and trained by our experienced team to ensure consistently high standards.

Small groups

Our average group size is just 11; big enough to meet like-minded people but small enough to get to the heart of a destination. All sorts of people travel on our trips; groups are usually a mix of solos, couples and friends. What unites everyone is an adventurous spirit, sense of fun and a desire for real travel experiences. Call us to learn more about the group already booked on a particular trip (age range, solos vs couples etc).

Sustainable Travel

We're committed to reducing our impact on the planet and working towards a sustainable future. Every single one of our trips now has a carbon label, and we work hard to ensure we have a positive impact on the communities we visit.

Accommodation

We carefully select our accommodation to give you a comfortable night's sleep in the best possible locations. The places we stay are every bit as important as the sights we visit and the things we do. Wherever possible we choose small, local and family-run properties. Occasionally, when we want to get off the beaten tourist trail, we may stay in more basic accommodation. Choices are based on what’s available in the places we want to stay; we choose the accommodation to suit the itinerary, not the other way around.

I've traveled on all 5 Disney cruise ships. I have 2 clear favorites, and there's only one I'm not in a hurry to book again.

  • My family and I have been on nine Disney cruises and all five ships.
  • We love the fleet's two smallest ships, Disney Wonder and Disney Magic.
  • Although we had a great experience on board Disney Wish , it was my least favorite ship to travel on.

I've been on nine Disney cruises with my husband and two teenage sons. We've sailed on other cruise lines including Carnival, Celebrity, MSC, and Royal Caribbean , but Disney Cruise Line is always our top pick.

Stellar service, subtle theming, top-notch kids' and teen programs, and a dreamy private island in the Bahamas are some of the reasons we keep returning.

So far, we've been on all five Disney Cruise Line ships — Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wish. We'll soon have more ships to explore, with Disney Treasure planning to set sail in December and Disney Destiny set to embark on its maiden voyage in 2025 .

Out of the five ships we've been on, two stand out as favorites, and there's only one I'm not in a hurry to travel on again.

My favorite ships are Disney Wonder and Disney Magic

Disney Wonder and Disney Magic are my favorite ships in the Disney Cruise Line.

They have nearly identical deck layouts and are the fleet's two smallest ships. Some may see this as a negative, but I prefer the smaller, more intimate size and the ease of getting around the ships.

Disney Wonder also has my favorite Disney Cruise Line restaurant, Tiana's Place. It offers a delicious, Cajun-inspired menu and a fun "The Princess and the Frog" theme. There's even a lively floor show with jazz music.

I love Disney Magic , too, but I thought it was more dated and in need of an update than Disney Wonder.

I also didn't love the Magic's Rapunzel-themed restaurant nearly as much as I love Tiana's Place.

The food at Rapunzel's Royal Table was just so-so, but the entertainment and theming more than made up for it. The in-person appearance of Rapunzel and Flynn, capped by a lantern processional to the tune of "I See the Light," was glorious.

Although Disney Wish was great, it was my least favorite ship to travel on

Although I had a great experience on board Disney Wish, it was my least favorite ship to travel on.

The Wish is unarguably beautiful — everything is sparkling new, and the atrium is decked out with a life-size Cinderella sculpture — but I thought the layout was a little clunky.

I may have felt this way because many of Disney's ships are laid out very similarly, and after nine cruises, we're pros at finding our way around.

Disney Wonder and Disney Magic have nearly identical deck layouts, as do Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Disney Wish, however, is laid out much differently.

Unlike the other Disney cruise ships we've been on, Disney Wish doesn't have a specific area for adults-only lounges.

Instead, the adults-only bars and lounges, which are off-limits to kids after 7 p.m., are scattered throughout the ship. This means the Wish doesn't have that true kid-free haven that the other ships have.

I also found that many parts of the ship, from the dining rooms to the pools, felt crowded

For all that criticism, my family and I enjoyed sailing on Disney Wish . But now that we've crossed it off our list, we won't be in any hurry to jump on board again unless the route is one we can't pass up.

Correction: June 7, 2024 — An earlier version of this story mislabeled a photo of Disney Wish as Disney Wonder.

If you enjoyed this story, be sure to follow Business Insider on Microsoft Start.

I've traveled on all 5 Disney cruise ships. I have 2 clear favorites, and there's only one I'm not in a hurry to book again.

Expat Explore offers great value for all they provide on their trips. Some of the nicest people I know I’ve met on Expat Explore tours. The tour leaders are friendly professionals who know their jobs inside and out and are great travelling companions as well. Expat Explore does all the work, including great bus drivers, hotels, breakfasts, and many dinners, while customers like me just sit back and enjoy some of the best experiences of a lifetime!

explore travel and cruises reviews

I actually did a little bit of travelling before the tour began without an organised tour and at times it got really stressful. I was a lot more tired and there is a lot of work to be done outside the sightseeing. I will definitely be back with Expat Explore. I find comfort in knowing I only have to make it to the coach each day. If the rest doesn’t go to plan, that’s ok because I’ll be on the bus experiencing it with everyone else.

explore travel and cruises reviews

Going somewhere new can be scary because you don’t always know what to expect and there may be language barriers. Travelling on a tour just makes the most sense and is also more affordable. To recreate the same itinerary ourselves would have been more expensive. Group rates are awesome! You always have something to do and plenty of free time to do your own thing. You also meet great people along the way. We also felt very safe with a tour leader.

In fact, we’d settled on Expat Explore before deciding on a destination!

Why Uniworld is the best in the world for river cruises

The cruise line our discerning, nay f ussy, travel editor can't fault

uniworld ship

Offering an exceptional travel experience, even beyond cruise holidays , Uniworld's offering left us in awe after we experienced the cruise line for the first time on a seven-night Venetian cruise on its stunning ship, S.S. La Venezia ( try it with TV's James Martin later this year ).

We're not the only ones to be blown away by the company, either. The boutique cruise line has dozens of awards and accolades under its belt, including the Best River Cruise Line award in the prestigious Telegraph Travel Awards and a top three spot in Travel & Leisure's World’s Best Awards .

There's simply nothing else like it, perhaps because it is a cruise line founded by a five-star boutique hotel brand, which believes 'no request is too large and no detail is too small.' Everything from the service to the food is delivered to impress and once you take to the water with Uniworld , you are unlikely to ever look back.

To give us the most authentic feel for the river cruise line, which attracts only the few in search of extraordinary holidays, we explored the ship from top to bottom (including going below deck in the most luxurious way possible) and spent a week hearing first-hand what guests from, Kent to Australia, thought of the company before we felt confident to declare Uniworld as the world's best river cruise line .

With a high returning guest rate (it's not unheard of to be sailing with guests who are on their seventh or even their 50th Uniworld cruise) and staff who are proud to say "we don't consider ourselves to have any competitors," this is the bucket list cruise line you'll want to tick off again and again.

Read on for our honest review of why Uniworld is the best river cruise line in the world…

The style and decor

uniworld

Stepping onto a Uniworld ship is like entering a boutique hotel - but better. The style is as elegant and refined as it gets, with the finest details and luxury wherever you turn. Uniworld's small ships take inspiration from their destinations, complementing their surroundings while maintaining the sophistication of the brand. Modelled after sister company Red Carnation Hotels, which has the likes of Rubens at the Palace in London and The Oyster Box in South Africa among its collection, the ships are essentially luxury hotels on water.

You won't hear loud announcements and the high staff-to-guest ratio means you're not just a number - they'll remember your name. You can expect the finest decor, with bespoke fabric, original works of art and beautiful antiques. On La Venezia, which you can experience with Good Housekeeping , the fabrics are by Venetian maker Fortuny and the chandeliers and mirrors made from Murano glass.

The suites throughout Uniworld ships have marble bathrooms, and in every room or suite an incredibly comfortable Savoir bed awaits for restful nights on the water.

The destinations

uniworld

While we're almost certain we could enjoy a Uniworld cruise, wherever it's heading, the river cruise specialist does its utmost to bring travellers the most gorgeous locations to explore in style. Want to visit Venice and its islands ? Uniworld will take you to discover the highlights and see the islands many tourists haven't heard of. Fancy experiencing a Nile cruise ? You can tick off the Pyramids, the Valley of the Kings and the sounds and sights of Cairo while enjoying the luxuries of Uniworld.

Or, maybe you have a far-flung cruise in mind? Uniworld's Mekong River cruise in Cambodia and Vietnam takes you to ancient temples and gives you the chance to meet local villagers, while sleeping in five-star surroundings on stunning ship, Mekong Jewel.

The cruise line's Bordeaux , Danube and Douro itineraries are other fantastic itineraries guests keep returning for.

uniworld

We can't praise Uniworld's staff enough and neither can other guests. Guest Deb, from Pennsylvania, who has been on six Uniworld cruises, told us: "Every staff member makes you feel special. They really want to make your experience wonderful." Meanwhile, Joanne, from New Jersey, said: "The staff get to know you quickly and intuit what you want and need. They bring you something before even you know you want it. I don't think you get the same attention at a hotel."

With a 1 to 2.4 staff-to-guest ratio, it's clear that service is a high priority for Uniworld, but as Joanne added, "they're helpful but not in your face."

Wendy, from Warwickshire, told us how she would frequently help herself to the orange water available for guests at the bar and one time made a passing comment to the bar staff about how much she enjoyed the drink. By the end of the day, she found a carafe of orange water in her suite.

Another guest, Charlotte, from New Hampshire, described the staff like a "relative who knows you, knows your likes and your dislikes," saying that it makes the cruise "special."

The incredible excursions

uniworld

While life on board the ship is a joy, stepping off a Uniworld cruise will leave you with fabulous memories you can't miss. Uniworld cruises are packed with carefully-curated included and optional excursions, which include after-hours tours of popular attractions (the perfect way to skip the queues), walking tours that provide a look at local life, and the privilege of meeting working people in their workshops.

During our cruise, we had an outstanding after-hours visit of Basilica di San Marco, one of Venice's most popular sites, where we had the cathedral to ourselves and were able to bask in the tranquility and beauty of this world-famous attraction after the crowds had left.

One solo guest, who wished to enjoy Uniworld's excursions at her own pace, told us that she had booked the same cruise twice, back-to-back, so she could spread out her days and ensure she didn't miss out on anything.

The butler service

uniworld

While you'll be treated to a personalised experience regardless of the cabin you book, suite guests on Uniworld cruises have the benefit of their very own butler who will take this service to another level. Working to the motto that 'no request is too large, no detail is too small,' the suite butlers, trained to the standards required by Buckingham Palace, do everything they can to make you feel important.

Whether you would like a special dinner organised just for you and your loved one, or a private sabering ceremony (a champagne sabering ceremony by the ship's butler at the start of a sailing is a Uniworld tradition), your wish is their command.

While we didn't have any extravagant requests for butler Marko during our time on La Venezia, we knew he was at our service for anything we needed, whether it was a cup of tea brought to our room, or help unpacking our suitcase.

The behind-the-scenes dinner

uniworld

If you've always wanted to see what life is like below deck, Uniworld has the most luxurious way to do it. Its Progressive Dinners (extra charge, with a maximum of 10 passengers) take you to the bridge to find out about life as a captain, from the captain himself. The dinners are usually a surprise so stop reading now if you'd prefer no spoilers...

They might take you into the kitchen to see how the ship's elaborate meals are meticulously prepared. A look inside the steaming hot engine could be part of the tour, as well as a chat with the laundry staff and a peek at the staff room. The best part is tucking into a different dish along the way, culminating with your main meal in the ship's private dining room, all while meeting the wonderful people who make the cruise holiday perfect.

The thoughtful touches

uniworld

Whether its sustainability, guest safety or satisfying your hunger, Uniworld goes above and beyond. You'll find compostable slippers and a gifted water bottle for each guest to stay hydrated while caring for the environment. Breakfasts, lunches and dinners are elaborate enough, with a varied selection and locally sourced ingredients used to create delicious feasts, but if you find yourself feeling peckish in between, the Panini Bar has pastries and fruit you can help yourself to and panini that are made to order.

Another observation we made was the care and attention of the tour managers on the excursions. During our after-hours tour of Basilica di San Marco, the tour manager stood at the entrance of the crypt, with its low ceiling, and warned each and every guest to watch their head as they made their way down the stairs.

Back on the ship, the housekeeping team are nicknamed 'fairies' for being in and out of the rooms without a peep. Then there's the River Heritage Club that rewards your loyalty with complimentary laundry, cocktail parties and savings on your next trip.

It's truly all inclusive

uniworld

On a Uniworld cruise, you can rest assured that everything is included. Premium drinks are part of the package at any time of day and there's an extensive programme of activities throughout the cruise without needing to put your hand in your pocket. Gratuities are included so you don't have to bring extra cash for crew and tour managers), either.

On board entertainment can be enjoyed at no extra cost and Uniworld goes the extra mile to offer an all-inclusive experience that doesn't compromise on quality. The food and drink is excellent, and when it comes to the sightseeing, each group has its own guide for a more intimate tour experience.

Of course, there are ways to upgrade your experience if you wish, with dinners, premium excursions and pre- or post-cruise land extensions available.

You can combine your sailing with amazing land stays

uniworld best river cruise line

As experts in luxurious holidays, Uniworld knows exactly how to make your cruise extra-special and has some amazing river cruises with five-star land or rail options. For example, in India you could enjoy seven nights on the Ganges Voyager II, as well as nights in the Golden Triangle staying in Oberoi Hotels.

Or you could sail the Mekong River for seven nights, before exploring the cities of Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Siem Reap while staying in top hotels.

FIND OUT MORE

Or you can pair a Venice sailing with a luxury Golden Eagle Danube Express journey through the Alps or a two-night hotel stay in Milan with private access to Da Vinci's Last Supper. There are various ways to extend your trip and experience a cruise and land holiday.

You really can't fault it

uniworld

After many conversations with other guests, we failed to find a reason not to love Uniworld. Not only do the staff think of everything a guest could possibly need before they've thought of it themselves, but they continue to look for ways to improve.

We received a feedback form on day two of the cruise (naturally, we struggled to provide anything negative) but one of our new friends told us that she mentioned that she would have liked some Greek yoghurt and additional healthy options at the breakfast buffet. The next morning and every morning for the rest of the cruise, there was Greek yoghurt and a large selection of fruit at the table.

Good Housekeeping has partnered with Uniworld to bring you a selection of cruises exclusive to our readers, including the Ganges and India's Golden Triangle , and Venice with after-hours sightseeing .

The best party cruises have something fun for everyone.

The Best Party Cruises

You won't be bored on a party cruise.

The magic of a cruise vacation is created with culinary delights, exotic ports of call, comfortable accommodations, carefully curated spaces and, of course, parties. These onboard celebrations can take many forms: large dance parties and quiet lounges, family-friendly and adults-only, adrenaline-pumping and relaxing activities, elegant and come-as-you-are events, and entire ships transformed into themed cruises .

Prepare for fun times on the following ships hosting the best party cruises at sea.

Royal Caribbean: Oasis of the Seas

Explore the eastern and western Caribbean aboard Oasis of the Seas , one of the largest cruise ships in the world. On this 6,771-passenger vessel, 18 decks of fun and 2,109 crew members await your next voyage.

  • Bionic Bar: For late-night parties where "mixology meets technology," order cocktails from unexpected bartenders: robots! These two specialized tech creations are well-versed in classic alcoholic and nonalcoholic cocktails, and they can also mix a bespoke drink designed by you.
  • Adrenaline-pumping amenities: Get ready for day and night thrills at four separate venues. Ripcord by iFly is billed as the only skydiving simulator at sea; North Star allows cruisers to snap stunning photos from the tallest viewing deck found on any cruise ship; Sky Pad provides a virtual reality experience while patrons jump on a bungee trampoline; and the Ultimate Abyss, named the tallest slide at sea, plunges 10 stories down.
  • Surprise events: Scattered throughout the ship are several surprise activities that pop up among the scheduled itinerary of events. Join a toga party; boogie at a disco brigade; dress for a masquerade party; or transport back in time at an '80s-inspired extravaganza.

Then, see everyone again at the open-air Mega Deck Party under the stars on the Lido Deck, complete with more dancing, games and giveaways.
  • RedFrog Rum Bar and BlueIguana Tequila Bar: Taste the flavors of the tropics at these two popular venues for drinks, music and good times. Choose from a chill menu of cocktails and specialty beer while you stay cool by the pool.
  • Fun and games: If parties with your friends include spirited competition, this is your ship. In addition to showing off your skills on the basketball court and obstacle-filled mini golf course, play cornhole, sign up for the scavenger hunt and compete in art games. Then, try your luck gambling in the casino, playing bingo, and joining the "Deal or No Deal" onboard game show.
