We also included some of the best Mount Titlis tour recommendations and insider tips that will help you make the most of your day trip to Mt Titlis in any season.

Good to know: We’ve been to Engelberg several times, in summer and in winter , and visited Mt Titlis on various occasions. In this article, we share our experience-based tips for your visit to one of the most popular mountain destinations in Switzerland.

First, you can find all the practical information for visiting Mt Titlis. Further below, you can read about what to do at Mount Titlis and also find some additional tips for how to get the most out of your visit. Read on!

Mount Titlis

What is Mount Titlis

At 3,239 meters above sea level, Mount Titlis is one of the highest mountain peaks that you can easily visit in Switzerland. It’s also one of the most popular day trip destinations in Switzerland, attracting lots of visitors in all seasons.

It’s not very clear to me how high Mt. Titlis actually is. According to Wikipedia, it’s 3,238 meters, whereas the maps of Titlis ski area say 3,239m. When you visit Mt Titlis, there is a sign at the viewing platform at the top saying that it’s 3,020 meters (10,000 ft)… But that’s the height of that place, at the nearby Klein Titlis (3,028 m) and not of Mt Titlis itself.

Whatever the precise height is, the landscape is amazing and it truly feels like you’re standing on top of the world. The 360° views from Mt. Titlis are incredible and if you visit on a clear day, the scenery of countless mountain peaks all around you will take your breath away.

Mt Titlis day trip - tips and practical info

Where is Mt Titlis & How to Get There

Mt Titlis is located near Engelberg, a small mountain resort about 35 km (22 miles) south of Lucerne in central Switzerland. Mt Titlis can be reached by taking a gondola from Engelberg to Stand, followed by a rotating cable car from Stand to Mt Titlis.

Engelberg can be reached by car or by train from Lucerne (see below). Railway connections are very good in Switzerland and so it’s easy to visit Mt Titlis as a day trip from Lucerne, Zurich, or other towns.

You can visit Mt Titlis on your own (you’ll still need to get a Mt Titlis ticket , of course) or with an organized tour (see further below for more information and the best options).

In order to make it easier for you to orient yourself, I created a map of the Mount Titlis area that should give you a much better idea of where everything is and clarify some of the names you’ll see mentioned in this article. Take a look below.

How to Get to Engelberg by Train

Engelberg can only be reached by train from Lucerne. So you’ll need to get there first. From Lucerne, there are regular trains to Engelberg, usually at least once an hour. The train journey from Lucerne to Engelberg takes 43 minutes.

Normally, you don’t have to book a specific train ride and can just take any train, but you may want to double-check that when you buy tickets. If you have the Swiss Travel Pass , it’s also valid for your journey to Engelberg (plus, it gives you a 50% discount on Mt Titlis gondola tickets).

The walk from Engelberg train station to the Titlis gondola takes about 10 minutes. It’s an easy and flat walk. In the high season and on weekends in the low season, there are also free shuttle buses available from Engelberg train station to the Titlis cable car station.

How to Get to Engelberg by Car

Engelberg is easy to get to by car. Take highway E35/A2 from Lucerne in the direction of the Gotthard Pass. Take exit #33, at Stans-Süd.

From there, follow the signs to Engelberg. There is just one road going south and it’s well indicated. From the highway, it’s just about 20 km (12 miles) to Engelberg.

The first half of this road is going through a valley and is flat. Only the last 10 km have some hairpin turns, but nothing to worry about. Even in winter, we never experienced any difficulties on this road. You should know, however, that snow chains are obligatory in case of hard snowfall, although we never had to use ours.

Once in Engelberg, take a right turn to Titlis Valley Station. It’s well indicated from the main road, soon after you pass a small lake on the right. There are several big car parking areas here and there is usually plenty of staff if you aren’t sure where to park or have any other questions.

Best Mount Titlis Tours

As already mentioned, Mt Titlis is a popular day trip in Switzerland and there are tours available from some bigger cities nearby.

Here are the best options that have great customer ratings and the best price-quality ratio:

  • Mt Titlis tour from Lucerne .
  • Mt Titlis tour from Zurich – this tour also includes a guided visit and some free time in Lucerne.

How to Visit Mt Titlis on Your Own

If you want to visit Mt Titlis on your own, it’s perfectly doable (get your tickets here ).

In that case, you’ll first have to get to Engelberg (see above for more info). In Engelberg, take a gondola from Titlis Valley Station to Stand. In Stand, take a revolving cable car – TITLIS Rotair – for the last ascent to Mt Titlis.

Both – the gondola and the rotating cable car are included in the same Mt. Titlis ticket – this specific ticket also includes all the attractions at Mount Titlis itself (unless closed due to weather).

You can get Mt Titlis tickets upon arrival or online in advance. I recommend booking online as that will save you some time, especially on busy days. Often, it’s also cheaper online, especially in the winter season when they work with flexible rates. You can find more information about the tickets further below.

TIP: On your way up or down, you can also disembark at Trübsee (it’s a stop located halfway between Engelberg and Stand). It’s a great destination in itself and has a lot to offer in summer and in winter. I recommend visiting Mt Titlis first so that you can then quietly enjoy all the activities at Trübsee before heading back down. Further below, you can find more info about things to do at Trübsee.

Mt Titlis Tickets

At the moment of the last update, visiting Mt Titlis will cost you 108 CHF (96+12 – see below), plus the cost of getting to Engelberg.

The official ticket price for a return ticket to Mt Titlis is 96 CHF. The Ice Flyer (cable car that you can take once you are at Mt Titlis itself) is an additional 12 CHF and it includes all activities of Glacier Park. If you want to experience everything at the top, the best option is this all-in Mt Titlis ticket .

Good to know: Kids age 5 or younger travel free of charge and kids age 6 to 15 get a 50% discount (free with Junior Travelcard ). Discounts are also available with the Swiss Travel Pass (50%).

For more information about fares and discounts, please consult the official website . On their ‘webshop’ you can also book your Mt Titlis tickets in advance. You can also get the tickets on the spot – there are several ticket machines on the left side before you enter the cable car station. But I’m not sure if it’s the same price there (we always get our tickets in advance), and it’s always so busy. Plus the machine gives you so many ticket options that it might get overwhelming…

PRO TIP: If booking online, make sure to also check prices for Mt Titlis tickets on the GetYourGuide website (if available – this can be seasonal). Normally, ticket prices are the same as on the official site, but sometimes they also offer a seasonal discount that’s not available elsewhere. Plus, if booking with GetYourGuide, you have free cancelation up to 24 hours in advance.

Important! Make sure that you keep your ticket throughout the entire day because you’ll need to scan it multiple times. Also, keep an eye on the indicated times and make sure that you don’t miss the last cable car to get back down to Engelberg. It’ll cost you a small fortune if they have to let it run an additional round especially for you.

What’s the Best Time to Visit Mt Titlis

Mount Titlis is a year-round destination and has something to offer in every season. Weather permitting, you can enjoy all the attractions and great views at any time of the year.

The best time to visit is, of course, on a sunny day when visibility is best, but the time of the year doesn’t matter much.

My personal favorite time to visit is in winter when Mt Titlis itself and all the surrounding peaks are covered in snow. In summer, I prefer the lower green areas around Trübsee or Jochpass. But Mt Titlis is also amazing, especially if you haven’t visited before.

How Much Time Do You Need to Visit Mt Titlis

While visiting Mt Titlis itself and the main attractions on top of the mountain only require 1 or 2 hours, you should count at least 3-4 hours for a visit.

It takes a long time just to get to Mt Titlis from Engelberg and back, plus the wait times for Titlis Rotair can be quite long at times. You’ll need even more time if you are planning to do anything extra like sledding or tobogganing, hiking, or any of the adventurous activities at Trübsee.

When you add up the time for cable cars, activities, lunch, plus your travel time to Engelberg, you’ll quickly realize that you need the whole day for a visit to Mt. Titlis.

TIP: If you don’t have an entire day and are visiting the area in summer, you could also opt to visit Mount Pilatus near Lucerne instead of Mt Titlis. Pilatus is closer to the city and you can visit it in 4-5 hours in total, so a good half a day.

Things to Do at Mt Titlis

Below is an overview of everything that you can do at Mt. Titlis. Please keep in mind that some views and activities are weather-dependent, while some others can be enjoyed in any weather.

Here’s what you can expect to see and do at Mt Titlis:

Amazing Views

Mt Titlis offers some of the best mountain views in Switzerland. TITLIS Rotair , the cable car that you’ll have to take in order to get to Mt Titlis, offers impressive 360° views of the surroundings. This is the world’s first revolving gondola that slowly turns as it goes up, giving you an opportunity to enjoy some jaw-dropping scenery all around you. However, this is just an introduction of what’s to come…

Once on top of Mt Titlis, you have many more possibilities to enjoy spectacular views in pretty much all directions. There is a viewing platform on the top floor of the Mt Titlis Mountain Station, great views from the mountain top itself, and yet another angle from the Ice Flyer chairlift … But my favorite views are probably those that you get from the TITLIS Cliff Walk . Absolutely dazzling!

If you feel like hiking, you can also take a 40-min Stotzig Egg hike that offers some nice views as well. During winter (October – May), part of this trail is on the ski slope and not really well indicated.

Mount Titlis Switzerland

Glacier Cave

Titlis Glacier Cave is a 150-meter-long ice tunnel, located deep under the glacier. The temperature inside the cave is just below freezing point, so the Glacier Cave can be visited the whole year. Just keep in mind that it’s cold and slippery inside, so you need good shoes and warm clothes.

Ice thickness above the cave is between 3 and 20 meters (10-65 ft). The ice inside is said to be up to 5000 years old – incredible, isn’t it!

Every year, the Titlis Glacier Cave is a bit different. Sometimes they have ice sculptures, sometimes it’s lit in different colors. One year we visited, there was an ice sofa standing at the entrance of the cave and Scrat from the movie ‘Ice Age’ was trapped inside the ice. However, the last time we went, the ice tunnel wasn’t nearly as impressive as in previous years. Climate change is clearly visible if you come here every year…

However, if you have never walked inside an ice tunnel, it remains a very special experience. But if you have seen ice tunnels before, I have to admit that the one at Titlis is not that special. We found the ice tunnels at Jungfraujoch and in Zermatt much more impressive.

But then again, it looks different every time we visit and so they may add a few more ice sculptures or other elements and it will be more special again… Either way, it’s definitely a place you have to see when visiting Titlis.

Good to know: Glacier Cave is included in your Titlis ticket. You can access it from Level 1 of the Titlis Mountain Station.

Mount Titlis Glacier Cave

Titlis Cliff Walk

At 3,041 m height and 500 m above the ground, Titlis Cliff Walk is Europe’s highest suspension bridge and one of the best things to do at Mount Titlis.

No matter how many times we walked over this bridge, it remains a special experience. Not to mention that the views are absolutely phenomenal!

The bridge is not wide and stretches over 100 meters. If there are more people walking at the same time, it usually swings quite a bit, adding to the experience and excitement. Don’t worry though, the bridge is well-protected. Also, the sides are properly closed with steel wire, so you can also walk this bridge with young children. Our kids love it!

Good to know: The suspension bridge is also included in your ticket and can be visited free of charge. It can be found next to the Ice Flyer chairlift – both reachable via the exit on the top floor of the Titlis Mountain Station.

Titlis Cliff Walk - Europe's highest suspension bridge

TIP: On the bridge, you’ll see stickers in the shape of the feet. If you stand there, you’ll be looking at a camera. Push the button and it takes a really nice picture from an angle that you wouldn’t be able to do yourself.

You can then review your pictures and buy them if you like at the photography studio inside the main building of the Titlis Mountain Station. A picture will cost you about 12 CHF, and it’s a really nice souvenir to take home.

Of course, you can just take your own pictures at no extra cost.

Mt Titlis with kids - cliff walk

Titlis Ice Flyer is a chairlift located at the top of Mt Titlis, right next to the suspension bridge. It connects the summit to the Titlis Glacier Park. In summer, you can do winter activities here (more info below), and in winter you can ski on the summit.

The views from this chairlift are really nice as you ‘fly’ over the glacier and see it up close. For many people who don’t ski, taking a chairlift is an experience in itself. I personally don’t consider this as something you must-do when visiting Titlis in winter, especially if you have to pay separately for it. If you are skiing in Engelberg, this chairlift is included in your ski pass.

However, if you are visiting in summer, then it’s definitely something you should do. It gives you access to Glacier Park – fun for young and old.

Good to know: If you get a regular Mt Titlis ticket, Ice Flyer isn’t included. You’ll have to pay an additional 12 CHF for it.

Sign to Ice Flyer and Cliff Walk at Mt Titlis

Glacier Park

Accessible via Ice Flyer chairlift, Glacier Park is only open in summer. There is always snow here, even if there is no snow at Mt Titlis itself. In summer, you can go sledding or snow tubing at Titlis Glacier Park.

Good to know: In winter, you can go sledding at another snow park, a bit lower down the mountain, at Trübsee. It’s free of charge and you can sled here as much as you want. It’s not just for kids and you’ll see people of all ages sledding here.

In the past, they used to have sledding and snow tubing at Trübsee, but during our last visit, there were only sleds available. The former snow tubing track is now being used as an exercise slope for beginning skiers. So if you want to go snow tubing, you’ll have to visit Mt Titlis in summer.

Shops, Restaurants & Souvenirs

Just like any other popular place in the Swiss mountains, Mt Titlis has everything a tourist might want. Restaurants, souvenir shops, Swiss chocolate… you’ll find it all at the Titlis Mountain Station.

There is also a photography studio where you can buy pictures that you can take on the Cliff Walk or on the Ice Flyer.

They also have lots of traditional Swiss costumes available. You can dress up and take a ‘typical Swiss’ picture if you want to. It’s not cheap and takes some time. We’ve never done it, but – as touristy as it sounds – the pictures look really nice.

Trübsee Activities

As already mentioned, Trübsee, the middle station on your way to Mt Titlis, is another great place that you definitely have to stop at after visiting Titlis.

In winter, you can go sledding here (see the Glacier Park info above). Usually, they also have snowmobiling and some other fun activities available here, but they differ every year.

For several years, they had an ice igloo and an ice bar here, but then it was gone for several years. The last time we visited, there was an igloo restaurant at Trübsee again. There is also Trübsee Flyer Zipline , but it’s not always open. So you just have to check what’s available on the day when you visit.

If you are staying longer, you can also go skiing , cross-country skiing , snowshoeing , or winter hiking . But if you are visiting Mt Titlis for a day, then you won’t have the time (or the equipment) for this.

Sledding and snow tubbing at Trübsee are free of charge, but you have to pay for all the other activities.

Good to know: Trübsee has a nice Italian restaurant, Lago Torbido, that is open in winter. If you are looking for a really nice lunch, check it out!

Sledding at Trubsee Snow Park - included in Mt Titlis visit in winter

Also in summer, Trübsee is a great place to visit. There are some really nice hiking trails that start in this area. Our favorite is the Four Lakes Hike , but it requires a whole day. Alternatively, you can hike down to Engelberg.

You can also just walk around the lake , row a boat , or take your kids to a playground .

Trübsee Flyer Zipline is also available in summer and they have a variety of other activities that differ a bit every year. I heard rumors of an even more exciting zipline coming soon, so make sure to check it out on your next visit.

Is Mt Titlis Worth It?

With a high price tag and the whole day required in order to properly visit the area, you may be wondering if Mount Titlis is worth a visit. I suppose it depends on how much time you have in Switzerland and what other places are on your itinerary. But if you have the time and the money, yes, it’s absolutely worth it.

Mt Titlis is a really special place that has a lot to offer: incredible views, thrilling experiences, and a big variety of activities to choose from in any season.

And while it might look expensive at first sight, it’s actually one of the more affordable places for a day trip in the Swiss mountains. It’s also a great destination for a longer stay – hiking in summer or skiing in winter.

Good to know: If you are skiing in Engelberg , a ticket to Mt Titlis is included in your ski pass. So if you are looking for a place to go skiing in Switzerland, in combination with sightseeing, Engelberg is a really good choice.

Additional Tips for Visiting Mt Titlis

  • Check the weather forecast . Mt Titlis is not the best destination for a cloudy day. However, if your plans aren’t flexible and the weather isn’t great, I wouldn’t worry too much and still do it. You can still enjoy most of the activities at Titlis and also at Trübsee, no matter the weather.
  • Arrive early so that you can make the most of your day in Titlis. Plan at least half a day for the visit, ideally an entire day if you also plan to do any additional activities at Trübsee or visit Engelberg town.
  • Dress warm . It’s usually very windy at the top. Even in summer, you may want to wear a jacket, gloves, or even a hat. In winter, it’s a must.
  • Wear sturdy closed shoes. You’ll need them inside the Ice Tunnel, but also for walking around on Mt Titlis, the suspension bridge, and any of the additional activities.
  • If you don’t have warm clothing or suitable shoes, you can rent them either at Titlis Valley Station or at Titlis Mountain Station. Needless to say, it’s not cheap.
  • If you are on a tighter budget , you can save some money by bringing your own picnic. Dining at Mt Titlis or Trübsee is really expensive. Drinks cost 5-8 CHF and a simple warm meal 20-30 CHF. There is a supermarket in Engelberg town where you can get some drinks and small snacks.
  • Mt Titlis is located at a very high altitude and not everyone adapts to it very well. It might help to stop at the intermediary stations such as Trübsee or Stand instead of heading straight to Mt Titlis so that your body can adapt to the higher altitude. On the other hand, in most cases, a short visit shouldn’t be a problem. Just make sure that you drink plenty of water – it really helps to adapt to the height. Just in case, you may want to bring something for a headache.

Where to Stay

Most people visit Mt Titlis as a day trip. If you are coming from Lucerne or Zurich, it’s indeed quite easy to do that and there is no need to stay in Engelberg. However, if you have some time to spare, I think you’ll really enjoy staying here for at least one night.

There are lots of nice hotels and accommodation options in Engelberg town . We always stay at Berghotel Trübsee that’s located near Trübsee lake, at the middle gondola station on the way to Mt Titlis.

Staying here allows you to enjoy all the amazing activities and stunning surroundings. We especially love this hotel early in the morning or in the evening. When there are no day tourists around, you can have beautiful mountains all to yourself. Incredible feeling, particularly in summer when you can go rowing on the lake with nobody else around you or watch a sunset above the mountains from the hotel terrace…

Mount Titlis is one of the highest mountain peaks that you can easily visit in Switzerland and it’s also one of the most affordable ones. It’s worth a visit in any season: the scenery is incredible, and there are so many fun activities including an ice tunnel under the glacier, Europe’s highest suspension bridge, snow fun the whole year round, and more.

Mt Titlis is a year round destination and is always open. Cable cars run daily from 8.30 AM until 4-5 PM. It can happen that cable cars don’t operate due to very high winds, but it’s very rare. Once a year (usually in November), they close for maintenance for a few days, but you’ll see if there are any unavailable dates when you book your tickets.

Mount Titlis can only be reached by a series of cable cars from Engelberg via Trübsee and Stand. You can get to Engelberg by car or by train from Lucerne. There are regular trains in all seasons and it takes 43 minutes from Lucerne to Engelberg.

Visiting the top of Mt Titlis will only take 1 or 2 hours, but because it also takes some time to get there and back, you need at least 3-4 hours for a visit. If you have more time, make sure to stop at Trübsee mountain station where you can find many activities such as sledding or snowmobiling (winter), zip line (year round), but also playgrounds, rowing boats, and hiking (summer).

With 3,239 m elevation, there is always snow on top of Mount Titlis. It might melt a bit in the places where most people walk in the warmest months of the summer, but there is always snow on the glacier where you can go skiing in winter or snow tubing in summer. So no matter when you visit, wear good boots and dress warm!

So, this is our guide to visiting Mount Titlis. If you are planning a visit and have a question that we forgot to address in this article, feel free to leave a reply below and we’ll try to help.

Where we will stay in either Zurich or Interlaken

Wednesday 27th of March 2024

Do you mean where to stay for visiting Mt Titlis? The closest big city is Lucerne, but you can also visit from other places. In that case, coming from Zurich the journey will be much shorter than from Interlaken. Have a great trip!

Excellent details. Which is useful to ordinary man to understand the things. If this type of explanation available we can easily round the world economically. Thanks 👍

Glad to help!

Monday 29th of January 2024

Hi Jurga. Just a quick one..otw back from Titlis to Engelberg..say i drop at Trubsee. I can hop on again from Trubsee to Engelberg without any additional charges. Am i rite?

Correct. If you get round-trip tickets to Titlis, you can get off at Trübsee and take the gondola back down to the village after your visit there.

Dear Jurga…really appreciate your time, effort, dedication and love you put on this article. Its really helpful, indeed. I have a clear mind what to expect and what to do. Btw, if i may ask..do you happen to know if any snow activity my family and i can enjoy at Titlis/Trubsee during autumn..(my visit in 13 sept)..tq and wish you always have wonderful days

Hi Sham, there won't be much snow left by September except on the glacier at the very top of Mt Titlis. Normally, they have toboggan there in the summer season.

Monday 22nd of January 2024

Thank you so much for such wonderful information, this has been very helpful for us.

We are planning to travel to Mount Titlis in Mid April (16th). Would the Glacier Park be open then? or would we have to go down to the Snow Park near Trubsee if that's open?

Also, will the Trubsee Lake be completely frozen - can we hike around the lake?

Wednesday 24th of January 2024

@Jurga, thank you so much. Incredibly helpful 🙏

Hi Ayush, the ski season at Mt Titlis Glacier normally lasts until early May so the Glacier Park will likely not be open yet (it typically opens around mid-May, after the ski season ends). However, there may not be enough snow for sledding/toboggan at Trübsee in mid-April anymore. I wouldn't be surprised they would use artificial snow if needed, but I can't tell you this for sure. What exactly is open and where in this 'shoulder' season, will really depend on snow conditions at that time. You can simply ask what the possibilities are on the day of your visit. As for Trübsee Lake, it should still be frozen, but I wouldn't walk on the ice on the lake this late in the season. If you have proper footwear (waterproof hiking boots should be fine), you can always hike around the lake - we have done it in all seasons. Hope this helps.

Mt. Titlis: A Detailed Guide For Visitors

mt titlis guide

The Bernese Oberland is home to many glorious mountain summits that attract travelers from all over the world. One of those is Mt. Titlis, a 3,000+ meter peak towering above the village of Engelberg .

As the home of the first rotating cable car in the world and a chair lift that transports you over a glacier, Mout Titlis is an excellent destination for travelers seeking unique adventures. It’s also a popular destination for skiing, thanks to 82 kilometers of slopes that are covered in snow from October until May.

This detailed guide covers everything you need to know about Mount Titlis, and will help you plan your trip down to the last detail!

Table of Contents

General Information

Where is mt. titlis located.

Mt. Titlis Urner alps

Mount Titlis straddles the border of the Obwalden and Bern cantons. It is a mountain in the Urner Alps range and the highest peak in the range north of the Susten Pass.

At the foot of the mountain is the village of Engelberg, which offers gondola rides to the summit. Engelberg is situated south of Luzern, in the Obwalden Canton.

How to Get to Mt. Titlis

Titlis Rotain Cable Car

The only way to reach Mt. Titlis is by gondolas from Engelberg. One ticket allows you to ride on all the different gondolas that travel up the mountain, and it’s possible to purchase tickets for journeys between the lower stations.

The stages of traveling up to Mt. Titlis are:

  • Engelberg to Trubsee (optional to get out Trubsee station)
  • Trubsee to Stand (must change gondolas)
  • Stand to Klein Titlis (ride in Titlis Rotair, the rotating cable car)

In total, it takes about 20-30 minutes to get from Engelberg to Klein Titlis. The journey is wonderfully scenic, with panoramic views of the glacier and the towering summits. My favorite part of the journey is the ride in Titlis Rotair, the rotating cable car that offers 360-degree views of the Uri Alps.

From Lucerne

Lucerne Train Station inside

Engelberg is most easily accessible from Lucerne. Traveling by public transport means a stop at the lakefront city is inevitable. With that in mind, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to include a half-day tour of Lucerne in your Mt. Titlis itinerary.

How to travel by train

At Lucerne, head to the main train station and board a train to Engelberg. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes, and full-priced tickets for a one-way journey in the second class are 18.2 CHF. The trains between Lucerne and Engelberg run every hour, from 5 AM until 11:30 PM.

An important thing to note is that trains to Engelberg run only from Lucerne. So, if you want to visit Mount Titlis from any other place in Switzerland, the first step is to board a train to Luzern.

How to travel by car

It’s possible to travel by car from Lucerne to Engelberg. Just head south towards the village, and you should arrive at Engelberg in about 40 minutes, depending on the traffic conditions. Parking is available virtually everywhere in Engelberg, with at least 4-5 parking lots close to the bottom station of the gondola.

The parking lot closest to the gondola station has a fee of 5 CHF for an entire day, so it fills up the fastest. The other lots close by charge 10 CHF for a full day.

From Zurich

sbb train in zurich

At Zurich, board a train to Lucerne . They run multiple times per hour from 5:30 AM until 12:40 AM. There are many train connections between Zurich and Luzern, but your best bet is to try and board a direct train because it’s the fastest.

It takes about 40 minutes to travel from one city to another and the tickets are around 27 CHF (full price, second class). Buy supersaver tickets for a specific timeslot a day or two earlier to save money on transportation.

Driving from Zurich to Engelberg takes approximately an hour and 10 minutes, so it’s at least half an hour quicker than the trains.

From Interlaken

Weather on Mt. Titlis

Titlis Mountain Engelberg

Mount Titlis has guaranteed snow between October and May, so it’s one of the more popular Swiss places for skiing in the off-season. Glacier Park constantly has snow, so don’t expect it to be warm at the summit. One thing to note is that there’s quite a bit of fake snow in late spring at Mt. Titlis, so just because you can ski up the mountain doesn’t necessarily mean it’s very cold.

Even in the summer, you shouldn’t go up to Mount Titlis without a hoodie or a lightweight jacket. And if you’re going to go inside the Glacier Cave, I’d recommend a down jacket and gloves. Summer temperatures at Mt. Titlis have been known to rise to 15-20°C, but only on very hot days when it’s 30°C down in Engelberg.

Winter is very cold at Mount Titlis, with temperatures below zero Celsius even during the day. Spring and Fall are warmer, but still get quite a bit of snow, and temperatures can rise up to 10°C.

Also, bear in mind that the temperature in Engelberg is significantly higher than at the summit. You’ll notice it’s much colder already at Trubsee, and by the time you reach Klein Titlis, it’s common for the temperature to be 10-15°C lower than down in the village.

Clear skies are what matters the most when visiting Mt. Titlis. Those are possible even in December, and as long as you’re able to check the weather forecast before the trip and avoid visiting on foggy and cloudy days, you can have a great time at Mt. Titlis.

Best Time to Visit

Mount Tiltis

Any time of the year is a good time to visit Titlis. Most facilities are open year-round, and it generally depends on what you want to do at the summit. October to May is a good time for activities that include snow, so skiing, snowboarding, sledding, etc.

But if you’re more interested in hiking, boating, and summertime fun, plan a trip between May and October. May is probably the best month if you want to avoid crowds; there are fewer visitors interested in skiing and snowboarding, and it’s still early for summertime crowds.

In terms of time of day, it’s best to visit Titlis as early in the morning as you can manage. The sooner you make it up the mountain, the more time you have to enjoy yourself.

Pay attention to the weather forecast, and try to avoid doing the trip on a foggy or cloudy day. Mt. Titlis is best experienced when the sun is shining and the skies are clear.

Time Needed for A Mt. Titlis Trip

Mt. Titlis

The amount of time you need for a Mt. Titlis trip depends on what you want to do at the summit. It’s anywhere from three to twelve hours, but I think five hours is the sweet spot for just the activities at the summit.

Explore the scenery at each of the gondola stations, visit the Glacier Cave, ride in the Ice Flyer, and don’t forget to do the Titlis Cliff Walk. If you enjoy skiing or snowboarding, you can spend time at Mt. Titlis having fun on the slopes.

Also, consider where you’re traveling from. If you’re departing from Engelberg, you need to allocate just 40-60 minutes for transportation up and down the mountain. But if you’re traveling from Interlaken, you’ll spend at least 6 and a half hours on public transportation for a round trip.

Mt. Titlis Activities

Mount Titlis offers loads of ways to stay busy and have fun during your trip. From hikes to flights over the glacier – here are some of the best things to do at Mount Titlis.

Titlis Cliff Walk

Titlis Cliff Walk

The cable car station at Klein Titlis and the Ice Flyer chair lift are connected with a 100-meter suspension bridge built into the cliffs. Crossing the bridge is the Titlis Cliff Walk , and it’s one of the best things to do up the mountain.

Maybe don’t go near the bridge if you’re afraid of heights since it is the highest suspension bridge on the European continent. You can look down the entire time and see just how high up you are, and that might be terrifying to some people. I enjoyed it; the views are awesome on clear, sunny days.

The bridge is often slippery, so you will need sturdy shoes with lots of traction to cross it safely. Also, the Titlis Cliff Walk is often closed in extremely windy weather, so double-check the weather forecast and conditions at the summit before you head to the cable car station.

Ice Flyer chair lift on Mt. Titlis

Riding the Ice Flyer chair lift is my highlight of visits to Mout Titlis. The lift transports you over the Titlis Glacier, offering dramatic views of the glacier and the mountains around you. This is essentially a ski lift that transports skiers to the starting point of a steep downhill run, but it’s open to everyone.

The ride is so fun that the Ice Flyer lift operates even in the summer when there’s no snow on the ground. Well, it’s fun if you don’t have a fear of heights, since you are sitting in a chair, soaring to an altitude of 3,000+ meters.

Tip : If you’re planning to go skiing in Engelberg, you won’t have to pay extra for the Ice Flyer as it is included in the ski pass.

Titlis Glacier Cave

Titlis Glacier Cave

Anyone who purchases the tickets for the Mt. Titlis cable car can access the Titlis Glacier Cave. It’s a 100-meter-long tunnel in the Titlis Glacier, with sculptures carved into the side walls. Walking through the tunnel is an interesting experience and a staple of trips to tall summits in Switzerland.

One thing to note about the Titlis Glacier Cave is that it’s always freezing inside. Even if you visit in the middle of the summer, you’ll need a warm jacket to avoid turning blue inside the cave. The entrance to the tunnel is from the top cable car station, and this should be one of the first fun things you do when you arrive at Klein Titlis.

Glacier Park

mount titlis trip

The Glacier Park at Mt. Titlis is open only in the summer, so it’s an attraction you can visit only during a specific season. There’s always snow and ice at Glacier Park, and it’s the best destination for tubing in the summer. Just keep in mind that, if you’re heading to Glacier Park, you need winter gear (hat, jacket, boots, gloves, etc.).

Accessible via the Ice Flyer chair lift, Glacier Park is the top destination for winter activities in the summertime. And If you’re at Mt. Titlis in the winter and you want to go sledding or tubing, know that you won’t be able to do it at Glacier Park. Instead, head to Trubsee, where a snow park offers loads of ways to have fun.

Mount Titlis is great for hikers

Plenty of hiking trails are available on Mount Titlis, ranging from easy-loop trails to challenging climbs.

One of the best trails in the area is from Klein Titlis to Titlis Summit :

  • Two hours with a detour to Stotzig Egg (3.5 km total)
  • 390 meters elevation gain

Trails to Rostockli are also popular in the area. An easy version is to hike from the Stand gondola station up to the summit. A more extreme trail leads from Rostockli ridge to Engelberg :

  • 5 hours, downhill descent
  • 8.5 kilometers, 1,800 elevation loss

This is a very challenging hike with a steep downhill descent and a good way to save money on gondola tickets while discovering spectacular Swiss landscapes.

Trubsee and Jochpass at the lower slopes of Mt. Titlis offer even more hiking trails. One of the best trails at the Trubsee station is the Four Lakes Hike. Lake Trubsee is the starting point, followed by Englstensee, Tannensee, and Melchsee.

It’s one of the best hikes to do in the area in the summer, featuring stunning panoramic vistas of dramatic peaks and Alpine Lakes. But it takes almost an entire day, so you can only do this hike if you’re staying at Trubsee for at least one night.

An important thing to note is that you need sturdy hiking boots, preferably something suitable for snow, for ascents to the Titlis Peak. The trail is steep and slippery, and shoes with plenty of grip and traction will make your life easier and the hike more enjoyable.

Of course, you can shop while you’re at Mt. Titlis. This is Switzerland after all, and at every corner, there’s an opportunity to spend hundreds of Francs as if it were nothing. At the summit of Klein Titlis is the Swiss Lion store, where you can shop for the best Swiss watch brands. The options here range from Swatch to Tissot, so there’s something for everyone’s budget.

Other shops at the top station of Mt. Titlis are:

  • Chocolate shop
  • Souvenir shop
  • Ice cream shop

An Intersport shop is available at Trubsee, and it’s stocked with all the gear you might need to have fun at Mt. Titlis. If you forgot to pack something, just stop by the store.

Finally, there are plenty of shops in Engelberg. From the local farmer’s market and supermarkets to Mammut and Benetton – whether you want to stock up on Swiss cheese or need new gear for mountain ascents, you can find what you need in the Engelberg stores.

Winter Sports

Mount Titlis in the winter

Titlis is a great destination for skiing and snowboarding because the mountain has snow even in April and May. The Ice Flyer chair lift is particularly good for skiers, as it transports them to the beginning of a very fun downhill run. Plenty of other pistes are available at the summit, and you could spend hours here skiing and snowboarding.

There are 82 kilometers of maintained ski pistes at Mt. Titlis, including the snow parks. The longest run is a 12-kilometer descent with an elevation loss of 2,000 meters. And there are many other things you do for fun at Titlis besides piste skiing and snowboarding:

  • Snowshoeing
  • Winter walking
  • Tobogganing
  • Cross-country skiing

One of my favorite activities at Mt. Titlis is sledding. It’s very fun and it’s included for free with the gondola tickets. You can sled as much as you want, and easily kill a few hours going up and down the mountain. And no, sledding isn’t just for kids, especially with the steep runs with sharp curves that are available at Mount Titlis.

Down at the Trubsee, there are even more fun things to do, from mini bobsleds to electric snowmobiles.

Things to Do at Trubsee

Trubsee Engelberg

A visit to Mt. Titlis isn’t just a gondola ride to Klein Titlis. Exploring the lower gondola stations is absolutely worth it, and Trubsee in particular offers a wide variety of fun things to do.

Winter Activities

In the winter, Trubsee is a popular destination for non-skiers at Mt. Titlis. The Snow Park at this mountain station offers:

  • e-Snowmobiles

All these are available to adults and children from 12-16 years old. There’s a fee to use the electric rides, and you can get discounts for booking multiple rides.

Trubsee even has a dedicated ski school for the youngest visitors. Schmuggli’s Winterland is a place where kids can learn to ski or snowboard, and there’s even a playroom where the little ones can continue to have fun if they get too cold outside. There’s no age limit for the children’s ski school.

At Engstlenalp, a short gondola ride from Trubsee, there’s a dedicated area for intermediate skiers and snowboarders to hone their skills. Head to the Bump Line to practice rollers and steep turns.

Summer Activities

Trubsee Titlis

Trubsee is most popular for boating in the summer. You can come to the lake, rent a boat, and ride around as much as you want. Swimming in the lake is also very popular; the water is quite chilly even in the summer, but you get used to it quickly.

A wide variety of hiking trails is available in the area. Consider an easy loop hike around the lake for a quick adventure, or hike down to Engelberg, for a real challenge.

Trails lead from the village all the way to Trubsee, and they’re exhausting with a steep elevation. But also a good way of saving money on cable car tickets, especially for experienced hikers who are looking for a challenge.

Other popular things to do at Trubsee in the summer are:

  • Mountain biking
  • Kick scooter rides
  • Paragliding
  • Bungy jumping

Trubsee and its surroundings are a vast playground for outdoor adventurers, and there’s a plethora of things you can do to stay busy at the mountain.

Where to Eat

Restaurant at Mt. Titlis

There aren’t too many options for meals at Mount Titlis. In total, there are three places where you can eat:

  • Titlis Panorama Restuarant (table service)
  • Self-service Panorama Restuarant
  • Ice Cream Bar

The Ice Cream Bar is good for desserts, but you can’t eat a full meal there. The other two restaurants are very expensive, as is often the case in the Swiss mountains.

There are a few more restaurants along the way at the gondola station and a variety of different places where you can eat in Engelberg:

Where to Stay

Engelberg Titlis

Engelberg, Luzern, and all the villages in between are good places to stay for trips to Mt. Titlis. Engelberg offers the easiest access to the summit, and you can be at the top of the mountain in under an hour from the moment you leave your accommodation. Consider these hotels in Engelberg:

  • Hotel Hoheneck
  • H+ Hotel & SPA Engelberg
  • Kempinski Palace Engelberg

Many hotels in Engelberg have a minimum stay length of three nights. If you’re not seeing too many options, adjust the length of your stay.

Lucerne has more accommodation options so the pricing is more competitive, and it’s a good place to stay to save some money on accommodation. But the travel time to Mt. Titlis is longer, plus the total cost of the trip is higher. Consider these hotels in Luzern:

  • ibis Styles Luzern
  • Hotel Rebstock
  • Hotel Des Alpes

Kriens and Stans are two villages along the path of the train with good accommodation options. Hotels are cheaper here than in Engelberg, and the travel times are shorter than from Luzern: Some hotels in Kriens and Stans to consider are:

  • Bellpark Hostel Kriens
  • Hotel Sonnenberg Kriens
  • Hotel Winkelried am See Stans

Finally, accommodation is available at Trubsee for travelers who want to spend several days exploring Mt. Titlis.

  • Berghotel Trubsee (open from December-March, and in July, and August)
  • Hüethütte (open from September to mid-June)

What to Pack

When packing for Mt. Titlis, consider the weather up at the summit and how you plan to spend your time. So, say you’re visiting in the summer but you have plans to visit the Glacier Cave – you shouldn’t wear shorts even if it might be 18°C up at the summit because you’ll freeze in the tunnel.

Another thing to bear in mind is that there aren’t too many amenities at the mountain. If you plan hiking and you want to explore the region, you should bring everything you think you might need. I’m talking about food, water, and snacks; while you can eat at restaurants at Mt. Titlis, they are very expensive and the food isn’t ideal for taking with you on a hike.

So, with all of that in mind, here’s a packing list of what you should bring to Mt. Titlis:

  • Sunscreen (especially in the summer)
  • Hiking boots
  • Medicine (to help with headaches and altitude sickness, just in case)
  • Lightweight weatherproof jacket
  • A thin down jacket (so you don’t have to run through the Glacier Cave)
  • Spare pair of socks
  • Backpack with all the essentials

If you’re visiting in the summer and you have plans to go to Glacier Park, you’ll need to wear winter clothes, even if it is 25°C+ in Engelberg.

Tips for Visiting Mt. Titlis

Titlis Cable Car

I’ve got a few more last-minute tips to help you prepare for your trip to Mount Titlis:

  • Glacier Cave and Titlis Cliff Walk are included in the price of gondola tickets
  • Check the Mt. Titlis website for updates on operating hours and possible closures before traveling
  • Wear sturdy shoes with lots of grip and traction – they’re necessary for the Cliff Walk and the Glacier Tunnel, in which you are walking on ice (you can rent shoes at the cable car station but it’s not cheap)
  • If you buy an Engelberg ski pass, Mt. Titlis is included
  • Go to Mt. Titlis early in the morning to beat the crowds and make the most of your day
  • Pack a lunch to bring to Mt. Titlis if you’re on a tighter budget as a main course with a drink will easily cost you 30-40 CHF per person
  • Some people experience altitude sickness when traveling up to Mt. Titlis. Stopping at the lower gondola stations can help you gradually adapt to the difference in altitude and prevent you from getting sick.

Things to do at Mount Titlis ranges from calming sightseeing views to kicking off the snow adventures. Below are the recommended and most popular things to do at Mt. Titlis.

Mount Titlis ROTAIR – The world’s first revolving cable car

Mount Titlis ROTAIR cable car revolves as it ascends from the middle station at Stand up till the summit station at 3020 meters above sea level. Mt. Titlis ROTAIR is the world’s first revolving cable car that revolves 360-degrees during the five-minute journey, indulging you in captivating views of steep rock faces, deep crevasses, and pristine snow-covered mountains.

The Mt. Titlis ROTAIR is among the three revolving gondolas in the world.

Glacier Cave

Nestled ten meters below the surface of the glacier at Titlis station, Glacier Cave is a 150-meter-long walking path of ice in cave-like structure. Right from the walkway to the overarching ceiling and even the sculptures are all of ice – as old as is 5,000 years.

The mystical cave is covered in a soothing blue mood light, and temperature always remains at a chilly -1.5-degrees Celcius, the atmosphere inside is so cold that a wave of clouds appear when you breathe.

The highlight of the Glacier Cave is the meticulously crafted ice sculptures, inspiring awe at 3020 m above sea level.

Titlis Cliff Walk – Europe’s highest suspension bridge

Built along the cliff of Mount Titlis and recognized as Europe’s highest suspension bridge, Titlis Cliff Walk is a high-adrenaline kind-of-new adventure at 10,000 feet above sea level. Even though Titlis Cliff Walk is a simple pedestrian bridge, overwhelming feeling of walking on the suspension while being mesmerized by panoramic views of Alps is an unrivaled experience in itself. On a clear day, you can also glance at the Uri Alps and steal a peek at Italy.

Although media reports its as one of scariest bridges in the world, it is 100 percent safe and practically impossible to fall off the bridge.

Earlier to Titlis Cliff Walk, Salbit Bridge was Europe’s highest suspension bridge, also in Switzerland.

Ice Flyer chair lift

Notch up your experience at Titlis when you feel flying-like moment in the Ice Flyer chair lift. Smoothly and safely, the Ice Flyer ascends over crisp, pristine snowfields and icy depths, where a few crevasses are as deep as twenty meters – a glacier experience you can have only at Titlis.

Ice Flyer chair lift is safe and secure for everyone, even kids. The feeling is surreal when chilly, snowy air hit your face while you journey your way up to activities and park area.

Titlis Glacier Park

You need not to be a seasoned skier to experience the exhilarating adventure of descending at a speed down the piste in snow. The Titlis Glacier Park offers a variety of exciting snow activities for people of all ages.

Snowtubbing is the most sort-after activity, the ultimate alternative sledding experience, that lets you skim the snow as you slide down the piste on a rubber tyre. The journey to the Titlis is truly an adventure in itself. First take the Titlis Xpress gondola to the middle station, then continue your journey in the TITLIS Rotair, the world’s first revolving cable car, all the way to the top.

At 3,062 metres, the summit offers not only a breathtaking 360° panorama of the wide Engelberg valley but also a view straight down into the abyss, with countless crevasses carved into the glacial ice. Things get really cool at the upper station, where a 150-metre-long artificial glacier cave cuts straight into the heart of the Titlis Glacier. The ceiling is covered in ice crystals, the glacial ice shimmers a mysterious blue, and crevasses open up in the roof. If you’re thinking of stepping inside the ice, be sure to wrap up warm, as the temperature under the 20-metre-thick glacier never gets above -1°C! There are a host of fun activities on top of the glacier, too, such as the Ice Flyer glacier chairlift or the glacier park. Crossing the glacier and climbing to the summit is a special experience – naturally only under the supervision of a mountain guide.

Checking the weather on Titlis

To check the weather forecast, we like using Search.ch and MeteoSwiss.ch. Even if the summary forecast shows rain, it might only be raining in the early morning or evening. So best to check the detailed weather animations for precipitation and clouds.

We also suggest checking the Titlis webcams the morning of your visit to make sure the view is clear. You don’t want to pay for this expensive outing if you can’t see anything at the top.

Accessibility for strollers and wheelchairs

The Titlis gondola, cable car and viewing terrace are accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. You do not need to contact them beforehand. But if you wish to visit the glacier ice cave with a wheelchair, you do need to inform the ticket office who can make arrangements for a staff member to assist you.

The amusements on the snow at the top of Mt Titlis are not accessible. The trail around the Trübsee at the middle station is obstacle free and suitable for both strollers and wheelchairs.

Snow is a novelty for many tourists, so you’ll probably see people throwing snowballs and laughing in delight just to touch the snow.

Once, we visited Titlis in July during a heat wave and there was an area set aside for kids, with snowball scoops, a snowman target, and shovels for snow digging. It wasn’t very cold up there, but the snow was wet and slushy. It would have helped to have waterproof shoes and maybe rain pants for our child to keep him from getting so wet.

Soak in the views! In winter, it’s icy cold up there, so dress super warm with a hat, gloves and good winter boots.

The Ice Flyer is a chair lift uses for summer skiing. For an extra fee (CHF 12 in 2020), you can pay to ride down and back up on this chair lift, only worth it as a thrill for tourists that have never seen snow or ridden on a chair lift. I really enjoyed it but my ticket was free because I was doing a site visit for a tour company. I wouldn’t pay for it myself because I ride ski lifts many times a year.

Glacier Ice Cave

From the restaurant, you can enter a 150m long tunnel cut into the glacier. There is no extra fee to visit the ice cave. The floor is ice and very slippery. Thank you for your very useful website! I have a question, can we rent suitable clothes for playing in the snow from there (boots, gloves, pants, jackets etc)? We’re coming from a hot country and I don’t know what’s suitable for the snow and don’t want to buy stuff just for one day.

You might contact the hotel or tourism office in Engelberg to inquire about clothes rental. I’m not aware of this.

Hi, A regional family ticket of the Bern region gives children free entry? Thanks

I’m not sure which pass you are referring to. If you are referring to the Bernese Oberland Regional Pass, it gives you a half-fare discount on the Titlis glacier visit. Children who have a Family Card with the pass ride free with the parent using a valid pass.

I really love your website. Extremely helpful for my upcoming trip. I will be visiting Mt Titlis in first week of May and I realised it is kind of in between season. Do you happen to know whether snow activities are available?

I want to let my 5yo girl try out some snow activities – snowtubing at the Glacier Park (but I am not sure whether it’s open in May), or try out skiing or snowboarding (I see the rental shops are closed by end April).

Thanks in advance!

Hi Wendy. Glad you are finding my website helpful. According the Titlis website, the Ice Flyer chair lift at the top of Titlis is open for winter season through 22 May 2022. It is closed briefly from 4-8 April 2022 for maintenance. https://www.titlis.ch/en/info/general/Timetables (click on the “operating times for walkers” link). However, the page referring to the tubing accessed by that chair lift says the tubing run is only open June to Sept. https://www.titlis.ch/en/activity/detail/TITLIS_glacier_park/4485/60738 It’s very confusing. I suggest using the chat feature on the titlis website and asking them directly. They are usually very helpful.

TQVM for your very informative page about Mt Titlis. Great help for planning my Swiss trip next year.

Mount Titlis: How to visit & Activities

With a proud height of 3,239 meters, Mount Titlis is one of the higher excursion mountains in Switzerland. An incredible 360° panorama and the view of the surrounding peaks on clear days impress visitors from near and far. Whether winter or summer, snow fun on the Titlis is always guaranteed. Find out more about it here!

About Mount Titlis and where it is located

Mount Titlis is one of the most popular excursion mountains in Switzerland and impresses travelers with incredible views. On clear days, the view of the surrounding nature takes visitors’ breath away; in foggy weather, it’s the sea of clouds. At over 3,000 meters, you can leave any bad weather behind and enjoy the sun above the clouds.

At the foot of the mountain massif is the Alpine town of Engelberg. From here, the Titlis mountain can be reached with the help of a gondola and the subsequent cable car. The valley town of Engelberg is located about 35 kilometers south of the famous Swiss city of Lucerne and is easily accessible by car as well as by train.

Peak of Titlis 3020 in engelberg

At different times of the year there are various offers for leisure activities. In summer there is a snowtube cable car and countless hiking opportunities, while in winter sports fans are attracted to the mountain by ski resorts and the eternal white.

All year round, you can visit a piece of eternal ice on the Titlis in the form of the impressive Titlis Glacier. The glacier grotto is reminiscent of times long past, and the nerves of every adventurer are tested on the Cliff Walk. But even the arrival by rotating gondola is an experience in itself. To the delight of all visitors, many of the leisure activities on Mount Titlis are free of charge.

Map of Mount Titlis Area

To help you find your way around the Mount Titlis area we have created this map. The graphic will certainly help you to have a better idea of the area and illustrate some of the names/places we cover in this article.

How to get to Mount Titlis

From engelberg to mount titlis.

From the valley town Engelberg you can take a gondola up to the gondola station “Stand”. On the way there is the middle station Trübsee, where there are restaurants, in winter a snow park and many summer activities. From the Stand station, a rotating gondola continues to the Titlis top station, where a wide variety of offers await visitors. The ride itself is a highlight thanks to the rotating gondola. During the total of 30 minutes, you have a view of the peaks of the surrounding mountains and get a taste of the fairytale panoramic view that awaits you on Mount Titlis.

The rotair gondola leading up to titlis

By car to Engelberg

Engelberg is very easy to reach by car. From Lucerne it is only about half an hour on the highway E35/A2 in the direction of the Gotthard Pass. From exit 33 Stans-Süd you drive about 20 km along a well signposted road southwards to Engelsberg.

The first 10 km of the road run through a flat valley, on the second half a few hairpin bends await you. Note that snow chains are mandatory in case of heavy snowfall or possible snowstorms. Nevertheless, the road is secured and well passable.

After arriving in the beautiful alpine town of Engelberg, you can use clearly visible signs to find your way to the Titlis valley station.

By train to Engelberg

The only way to reach Engelberg by train is from the beautiful city of Lucerne and can therefore be wonderfully combined with a stay in the port city.

Trains depart from Lucerne to Engelberg every hour, and the journey takes just under three quarters of an hour. Arriving by train allows visitors to admire the landscape between Lucerne and Engelberg more closely already from the ground, which is a good contrast to the later view from the bird’s eye view.

Once you arrive at the train station in Engelberg, you can either take the ten-minute walk to the valley station or catch one of the shuttle buses available during the high season and on weekends, and take the gondola up from the valley station.

Leisure activities on Mount Titlis

Enjoy the panoramic view.

The view from Mount Titlis is breathtaking, the sight of the only developed glacier in the area leaves visitors in awe. Even in high summer, you can build igloos or have a snowball fight here at an altitude of over 3,000 meters. The panoramic view of high alpine mountains makes the combination of rock and snow of the surrounding landscape a sensation even in summer.

Scenic landscape along the walenpfad at titlis mountain

In addition to a viewing platform, there is the opportunity to combine the stunning view with a little thrill: The Titlis Cliff Walk and the Ice Flyer invite brave visitors to an adventure at great heights and reward them with breathtaking views.

Titlis Glacier Grotto

The Titlis Glacier Grotto offers visitors a journey back to the long-gone Ice Age, where cold temperatures and snow ruled the world. Through ice up to 5,000 years old, turquoise-lit passages lead up to ten meters below the surface of the glacier. The grotto is a total of 150 meters long, and the temperature is a constant 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Glacier tunner at titlis gletschergrotte

The glacier grotto is easily accessible from the mountain station and can be visited all year round. So even in the hottest temperatures in the valley on Mount Titlis, you can literally walk through the ice. Fortunately, admission is free of charge and fun for the whole family.

Titlis Cliff Walk

Visitors can expect special thrills together with breathtaking panoramic views on the Titlis Cliff Walk. Over 100 meters, the suspension bridge takes travelers 500 meters above the eternal ice. At 3041 meters above sea level, the Cliff Walk bridge is also known as the highest suspension bridge in Europe. Admission is also free and available all year round.

From here, visitors have unparalleled views of the Titlis Glacier and distant landscapes. Even at the height of summer, travelers here can look out over the ice and snow into the green valley and surrounding alpine mountains. An incomparable experience for young and old that should not be missed on a trip to Mount Titlis!

The Ice Flyer is a chairlift that takes guests to the Titlis Glacier Park in summer and sports enthusiasts up to the snowy slopes in winter.

This chairlift lives up to its name – with the Ice Flyer you truly have the feeling of flying over the eternal ice. Again, breathtaking views await visitors with a bit of adrenaline as you fly over the glacier at high altitude. Over frosty snowfields and ice-blue depths, the Ice Flyer carries its guests as gently as a snowflake. From here you can marvel at the crevasses that are up to 20 meters deep.

The Ice Flyer is open year-round and – as long as you’re not afraid of heights – fun for all ages, families and solo travelers. The 12 CHF ticket is valid for one ascent and one descent, making it easy to return to the starting point.

Glacier Park

The Glacier Park is only open during the summer months, from May to August. The snow fun provides a welcome contrast to the hot summer weather in the valley: on the snowtoy track, young and old can slide down the slope on Balancer, Snake Gliss or Zipfelbob. The magic carpet takes them back up to the next round of snow slides. Here, too, admission is free.

Restaurants & Shops

Both at the intermediate “Stand” station and at the top station, there are excellent restaurants to tantalize the palate. The Panorama Restaurant at the summit additionally spoils with fascinating views.

On the Titlis there is a wide selection of stores offering everything from sweets to sports equipment, watches and souvenirs. Divided between the valley, mountain and middle station, waiting times will never be boring anywhere.

Titlis in winter

Titlis has a particularly impressive atmosphere especially at winter time. Since the mountain itself is covered with snow in addition to the glacier, and likewise the surrounding mountain peaks are bathed in the cold white, this reinforces the impression of a journey back to the long-gone ice age. The deeper in winter, the further the snow reaches into the valley until the entire landscape is covered by the white flakes.

Especially the surroundings of Mount Titlis offer breathtaking views of untouched nature. Snowfall on the Titlis starts in October, in some years even as early as September. With the beginning of the winter season the summer activities close and the ski lifts are ceremoniously opened. Skiing down a glacier at an altitude of over 3,000 meters is not to be missed. Therefore, especially for sports fans, the winter months are the preferred time to visit Titlis. Besides skiing, there are also enough offers for snowboarders, snowshoe hikers and ski mountaineers. With the snow fun, there is something for everyone!

Leisure activities at the middle station Trübsee

In summer, you can experience a wide variety of things at the Trübsee mid-station, from rowing boat excursions to exploring mountain flower trails. In the winter months, you can explore the slide park here with the whole family and experience the fun of snow with Snowtube or Zipfelbob. In addition, the Berghotel Trübsee is located here and holds culinary pampering as well as an extra portion of relaxation.

Near Trübsee there are countless possibilities for hiking. Different levels of difficulty invite beginners, advanced and experts alike to an adventure in nature. Accompanying you all the way is the incredible view of the valley and the beautiful untouched nature of Mount Titlis.

Hiking at the lake in Engelberg

One of the most popular, but also most time-consuming hikes at Trübsee is the Four Lakes Hike, which takes up the better part of a day. In keeping with the four lakes that can be admired during the hike, it also takes a total of four hours and is assigned a difficulty level of medium.

Alternatively, you can hike downhill to the valley town of Engelberg or from Engelberg up to Trübsee. With small children it is ideal to explore the one-hour waterfall circuit near the playground.

In addition to the already mentioned slide park, which guarantees fun for the whole family, in winter there is the possibility to ride a snowmobile and explore the surroundings, which is great for families with older children. In addition, there are different activities from year to year, such as igloos, snow bars or the Trübsee Flyer Zipline.

Cable car at Bruni in Engelberg

In addition, there are of course the possibilities of skiing, snowshoeing and ski mountaineering. However, to take advantage of all that the Titlis has to offer, a day trip is not enough, which is why a stay of several days pays off in any case.

In winter, in addition to all the leisure activities, it snows on the Titlis and the whole landscape is covered with soft snow hoods, which is good for the eyes and soul.

Is Titlis worth a visit?

Titlis is a place that must be seen, whether you are a nature, winter or sports enthusiast. In addition to comprehensive year-round leisure activities for the entire family, the mountain offers a panoramic view that will leave you speechless. Cliff Walk and Ice Flyer provide the right thrill and make travelers shrink in awe of the size of the ice landscape. The Glacier Grotto takes visitors on a journey back in time to the eternal ice, and on the slopes of the Glacier Park you can get your pinch of winter fun during the hot months. Mount Titlis is an incomparable experience for everyone and should not be forgotten at all when visiting Switzerland.

Tips for a visit

To make the visit as enjoyable as possible, there are a few things to keep in mind to get the most out of the trip. In a way, every adventure lives on planning: first of all, it is necessary to clarify which activities are on the wish list and choose the travel time accordingly.

Furthermore, you have to pay attention to the weather, as the view is largely determined by the cloud situation. On a clear day, one has the most beautiful view and can perceive even the most distant peaks. However, since the weather on the Titlis can change quickly, it is recommended to spend several days on the mountain to get the most out of the experience.

In addition, appropriate clothing is also indispensable. You should be aware of the minus temperatures on the mountain and not underestimate them even in summer. A water-repellent winter jacket and winter boots are a must.

Attention also because of the altitude! Especially children and elderly people get the alpine location quickly felt.

Early arrival is also recommended to make the most of the day.

  • August 28, 2023 February 22, 2024

Last Updated on February 22, 2024 by Darla Uhl

Titlis is a stunning mountain located on the border between Obwalden and Bern, Switzerland. It is best accessed from the village of Engelberg and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. Although enjoying the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain peaks will be the highlight of visiting Mount Titlis, it offers much more than that. This article discusses 10 Things to Do in Mount Titlis, Switzerland .

mount titlis trip

Overview: Mount Titlis

Mount Titlis is a mountain located in the Uri Alps, standing at 3,238 meters above sea level. It is a popular destination for many international tourists and locals alike, offering many things to do throughout the year. It is also a popular day trip from Lucerne due to its proximity and easy train connections with the Lucerne-Engelberg Express train.

One of the most popular things to do in Titlis is the rotating cable car ride to the summit. Known as the Titlis Rotair , it is the world’s first rotating cable car. While inside, you can enjoy a slow movement offering you changing views of the valley.

Titlis isn’t just a place to go for one hour and come down after having taken some pictures. You’d be surprised that there are many things to do here, from hiking and biking in summer to skiing or sledding in winter.

Without further ado, here are the 10 best things to do in Titlis, Switzerland :

1. Ride the Titlis Rotair

One of the best things to do in Mount Titlis is to ride the Rotair Cable Car

One of the best things to do in Mount Titlis is to ride in the world’s first revolving car – the Titlis Rotair . The Titlis Rotair is a large cable car that revolves slowly so that the passengers can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers. If you are lucky, you might even get a good spot near the window.

Titlis Rotair takes passengers from the middle station of Stand to Titlis , 3,020 meters above sea level. It rotates 360 degrees during the short five-minute trip.

At the top of Mount Titlis, visitors can explore the other attractions on the mountain, all of which are discussed below.

2. Traverse the Titlis Cliff Walk

mount titlis trip

Once you reach the top aboard Titlis Rotair, you will reach the mountain station of Titlis. After stepping out of the building, you will see soon enough the path to Titlis Cliff Walk .

At 3,041 meters above sea level, the Titlis Cliff Walk is a short 100-meter suspension bridge. While walking on this steel bridge, you are treated to stunning views of the Swiss Alps.

mount titlis trip

There is no need to purchase an extra ticket to walk on the suspension bridge. As soon as you exit the building and make your way up the steps, you can simply just walk and enjoy the views. You can see many snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and valleys stretching out for miles even in the middle of summer.

Wearing a safety harness is not necessary before crossing it. Despite its height, the bridge is quite stable. It’s safe for you, so you don’t need to worry.

3. Head to the Titlis Summit Viewing Platform

You can see breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains from the Titlis Summit Station . There is also a viewing platform atop Mount Titlis. As opposed to Titlis Cliff Walk, it is not a suspension bridge.

mount titlis trip

While it is a stable platform rather than a suspension bridge, you’ll need to traverse some snow to reach it. The views from this second viewpoint are also highly recommended.

4. Try the Ice Flyer Chairlift

mount titlis trip

With the Ice Flyer Chairlift , you can enjoy the beauty of snow without having to ski. Riders of the Ice Flyer Chairlift can travel over the glacier in comfort on a chairlift equipped with safety bars. It is one of the most popular attractions on Mount Titlis.

The Glacier Park can be reached by taking the Ice Flyer chairlift in summer. You will be able to do many fun activities here such as the balancer, snake gliss, or the minibob. The Glacier Park is open from the end of May until early July, depending on weather and snow conditions.

Take note that the temperature on the glacier can be quite cold, even in the summer months. Visitors should dress warmly and wear sturdy shoes or boots. I also highly recommend bringing sunglasses because the sun’s reflection off the snow can be glaring.

5. Explore the Glacier Cave

The Glacier Cave is one of best things to do in Mount Titlis

One of the best things to do in Titlis is to explore the Glacier Cave . This icy wonder is truly fun to visit. You will be greeted by a variety of ice formations, colorful lights, and glistening walls inside the Glacier Cave.

Since it is made of ice, the floor is slippery. Those who need extra stability can use the handrails on the side of the glacier cave. Take note that the cave is also cold, so make sure you have warm clothes with you.

There isn’t much time needed to explore the Glacier Cave. But even though it is a short cave, you may want to walk carefully and take pictures as you go.

6. Capture Your Traditional Swiss Photo

You have the opportunity to visit the Titlis Photo Studio and have your picture captured, and adorned in charming Swiss attire. It might be overly sentimental for some, but I think it’s a lovely thing to do to remember your visit.

While dressed in traditional Swiss attire against the stunning backdrop of Mount Titlis, your photo will be captured by the skilled photographers present. You can don traditional Swiss clothing and pose with an Alphorn or a Swiss accordion for added realism.

Within minutes, you will be ready to take home this captured photo as a cherished memory.

7. Dine Amidst Scenic Views

Titlis offers a variety of dining options for visitors to enjoy during their stay. From traditional Swiss cuisine to international dishes, warm meals, and quick bites, you can choose what suits you best.

Here are some of the restaurants available on Mount Titlis:

  • Titlis Panorama Restaurant – The Panorama Restaurant at 3,020 meters above sea level is a serviced restaurant that includes regional specialties, pizzas, and pasta.
  • Self-Service Panorama Restaurant – The Self-Service Panorama Restaurant allows you to choose your meal and bring it yourself to your chosen table. They have an extensive menu and fast service. It is open all year round.
  • Titlis Snack Bar – The TITLIS Snack Bar on the viewing terrace is open in warm temperatures. They sell snacks such as sausages, hot dogs, and sandwiches.
  • Mövenpick Ice Cream Bar – Aside from 20 different types of Mövenpick Ice Cream, this snack bar also sells warm drinks and Asian noodle soups.

There are more restaurants in Trübsee, Jochpass, Gerschnialp, and down the valley.

8. Pick Out Souvenirs at a Shop

For those who love shopping, you won’t be disappointed with Titlis. There are several shops here that you can visit. Aside from a souvenir shop with an assortment of TITLIS-branded products, there is also a watch shop. The Lion Shop boasts an impressive collection of Swiss watches from distinguished Swiss brands.

For those who love sweets, you can also visit the chocolate shop. Here, you can choose from over 300 types of Swiss chocolates.

9. Experience Lake Trübsee

mount titlis trip

Lake Trübsee offers a lot of activities to engage in, ranging from hiking to engaging in treasure hunts, rowing, scooter biking, and even experiencing the excitement of the Titlis Adventure Park.

From Trübsee Alpine Lodge , you can buckle up and fly 500 meters down with the Zipline . In winter, this area is transformed into a Snow Park providing snowboarders and skiers a chance to have fun and enjoy themselves. The park offers a variety of features such as a snowtube, minibob, or balancer.

I wholeheartedly suggest that you stop by Lake Trübsee before descending into the valley. This destination is truly splendid, exuding picturesque beauty and tranquility. The young ones will undoubtedly enjoy the treasure hunt and playgrounds around the lake as well. In winter, fun is also guaranteed with the snow park.

If you would like to read more about Lake Trübsee, you can check out Lake Trübsee in Engelberg Switzerland .

10. Hiking, Biking, and Skiing around Titlis

mount titlis trip

Mount Titlis offers many interesting hiking trails around its extensive network, from easy walks around Lake Trübsee to more challenging hikes such as going over Jochpass.

One of the most well-known hikes is the 4-Lake Hike which will take you from Trübsee via Jochpass to Melchsee-Frutt on the other side of the valley. For those who would rather ride their bikes, there are also bike trails throughout Mount Titlis.

In winter, this whole area boasts 80 kilometers of slopes. The upper portion is snow-sure and opens earlier than lower-lying ski resorts in the region. The ski season on Titlis is from October through May. For those who do not wish to ski, there are also toboggan runs, snowshoe trails, and winter walks especially around Gerschnialp and Trübsee.

Tips for Visiting Mount Titlis

  • Check the weather forecast: Check the weather forecast before you go. Bad weather can impact not only your experience but also cable car and chairlift operations. I suggest going to Mount Titlis only when the weather is good.
  • Buy your tickets in advance: Buy your tickets in advance to avoid long queues at the cable car and funicular stations.
  • Make use of the self-service machine: If you are unable to buy your tickets in advance, you will find a self-service machine at the entrance. Buying your tickets from the machine will spare you the need to stand in line and wait in the queue.
  • Dress appropriately: When visiting the top of the mountain, remember to wear warm clothing due to the temperature drop on the mountain station. It’s also recommended to wear sturdy, comfortable shoes with good traction, as the terrain can be slippery (especially in the Glacier Cave) and uneven.
  • Bring sunglasses: Remember to bring sunglasses to combat the sun’s glare reflected off the snow.
  • Consider guided tours : Guided tours allow you to learn more about the region and its surrounding areas compared to doing it yourself. You might have to pay a slightly higher fee, but the value for money for this experience will be excellent.
  • Respect the environment : Littering, damaging natural features, and bothering wildlife are strictly prohibited. Also, take note of the signs posted and respect the rules.

Guide to Visiting Mount Titlis Switzerland in the Summer

Posted on Published: 08/01/2023

When I was in high school, I had the opportunity to travel through part of Europe with my French class. One of our stops was Mount Titlis, located outside of Lucerne in Switzerland. During that trip, however, we didn’t get to do all of the fun activities at the mountain.

During my recent Adventures by Disney Italy Switzerland trip , our last day’s itinerary included a stop at Titlis Mountain to enjoy the fantastic activities. During our day, we rode up to the top of the mountain, ate a delicious meal, got to see breathtaking scenery, walked through a glacier, and experienced thrills on the IceFlyer and the suspension bridge. Unfortunately during our visit, the Titis Glacier Park was closed.

Getting to Mount Titlis

If you want to experience the Mount Titlis activities, you’ll first need to get to the town of Engelberg. From there, you’ll take cable cars to the mountain.

The closest international airports are Zurich Airport (about 1 hr 30 mins away) and Geneva Airport (3 1/2 hours). We flew through Zurich but started our trip outside of Milan Italy, and ended in Lucerne, Switzerland. Mount Titlis is an easy day trip from Lucerne if you are staying there.

Want to take the train? You can travel from Lucerne to Engelberg on the “Zentralbahn” train. The station is walkable to the base of the mountain in Engelberg, and there is also a free shuttle to the Titlis Valley Station if you’d prefer not to walk. If you are traveling by train throughout Switzerland, the Swiss Travel Pass is a good option.

If you have a rental car, you are able to drive and park at the base. The first hour is free, but then you’ll pay an hourly rate after that.

There’s also the option to book a tour from major Swiss cities. Here’s an example of a highly-rated half-day tour from Lucerne .

Titlis Cable Car above parking lot and town of Engelberg, taken from above

Going Up the Mountain

When you arrive at the base in Engelberg, you’ll find the building to pick up/purchase tickets, as well as restrooms and a snack bar. Inside the building is a gift shop. This is a good opportunity to visit the restroom before starting your journey up.

Once you are ready, you’ll board an 8-passenger cable car to the Stand station. It’s important that you keep your admission ticket safely put away because you’ll need it many times during your time at Mount Titlis. Ticket prices vary based on what you are doing and how far you’ll go up – so make sure you purchase the correct ticket.

Pine trees and turquoise lake in the mountains

For our trip up, we stopped halfway at the Trübsee station in the center. There’s even a hotel in Trübsee called the Trübsee Alpine Lodge for a very unique stay.

We used this time to get acclimated to the changing atmosphere and to enjoy the beautiful scenery. If you do have a few extra minutes, it’s worth getting out at this spot and walking around because it really is picturesque.

Then, you can go back into the building to board the Titlis cable car from Trübsee up to the Stand station. Once you are there, you’ll need to take the TITLIS ROTAIR cable car to the summit station at the top of Mount Titlis.

Red Rotair rotating cable car in the mountains

The TITLIS ROTAIR cable car is a revolving cable car, which rotates 360 degrees during the ascent to the summit. It’s a slow rotation, so I didn’t feel any sort of motion sickness. It accommodates about 60 guests, all standing. While you can stand in the center, I recommend grabbing a spot along the edge so you can see everything along the way.

At the end of your time at the top of Mount Titlis, you’ll go through the same process to go down. It takes about 30 minutes total, each way to get to the cable car station at the bottom. Once you are at the Summit Station, you’ll be about 9,900 feet above sea level.

Summer Activities at Mount Titlis

While Titlis is a popular ski resort in the winter, we visited it in the summer months. Despite the temperature in Central Switzerland, it can be quite chilly at the Summit Station of Mount Titlis. It can be refreshing to experience winter temps, snow, and ice activities while in the middle of the summer. You’ll exit the ROTAIR in the mountain station, a building with shops, restaurants, observation points, and more.

Here are some of the fun winter activities you can enjoy as part of the Glacier Excursion.

Enter the Glacier Cave from the station building, and you’ll go about 32 feet below the glacier surface. The glacier is lit with blue light, with purple lighting toward the end. It is slippery, but there is a handrail to hold onto (don’t forget gloves!).

The Titlis Glacier Cave is a unique walk, with some fun photo opportunities. This includes an ice throne in the center of the cave. It was nice to cool down after some hot days in Italy and Switzerland.

Mountain view from Cliff Walk with snow capped mountains

Next, you’ll reach the entrance of the TITUS Cliffwalk. This suspension bridge, the highest suspension bridge in Europe, is a brisk walk over the gorgeous landscape. It isn’t too scary but does move. In the end, there’s a place where you can take a photo to pick up in the store later.

At the end of the Cliffwalk, you’ll be able to walk down to the Ice Flyer. This open-chair lift offers remarkable and unobstructed views of the whole mountain landscape. Overall, I think this was my favorite thing to do on Mount Titlis because it was just so beautiful.

Mountain, cloud, and lake view from Ice Flyer chair lift

The Ice Flyer chairlift leads to the Glacier Park, which was unfortunately closed during our visit. The Glacier Park offers snow tubing and snow sledding. The opening is weather dependent, so it may be closed when you visit.

There are other activities that you can enjoy on Mount Titlis in the summer. These include things like mountain biking, ziplining, an adventure park, and hiking trails. We didn’t partake in any of these activities while we visited for the day, however.

Food and Shopping at Mount Titlis

The station building at the summit (where the TITUS ROTAIR drops you off), offers shops and restaurants (as well as public restrooms). If you need to take a break, are hungry, or want to do some shopping, you’ll want to spend some time in this multi-story building.

Shops include a chocolate shop, offering different brands and varieties including Lindt and Sprüngli. There’s also a small souvenir shop where you can pick up a reminder of your trip. Looking for a personalized souvenir? At the photo studio, you can dress in a traditional Swiss costume and get a photo printed.

There are also some restaurants and snack stands. If you want some ice cream, stop by the Mövenpick Ice Cream Bar. For more hearty food, there’s the TITUS Snack Bar and the Self-Service Panorama Restaurant.

During our day, we enjoyed lunch at the sit-down Panorama Restaurant. The panoramic view is absolutely amazing, and the food was excellent. It is such a unique place to enjoy lunch.

What to Wear to Mount Titlis

Our trip to Italy Switzerland took place in July, in the heat of the summer. While two of our destinations, Stresa and Lucerne, were forecast to have temps in the 80s and 90s, we also knew that we’d be spending a day at Mount Titlis. It’s hard to pack for cold weather when you know most of your trip will be very hot.

What you bring really depends on your comfort level. My daughter and I each packed a lightweight winter jacket, but ultimately didn’t use them. Instead, we wore long pants, sneakers, gloves, and sweatshirts. Layers are best because it may be hot in Engelberg and will get colder as you ascend the mountain.

If the Glacier Park is open, you may want extra socks. We packed them because we weren’t sure if the park would be open, but didn’t use them. Be sure to have shoes with good grips for the slippery floor of the Glacier Cave. Boots would be useful, but they do take up a lot of space in a suitcase. Sneakers were fine for us and were a lot more practical to have throughout our trip.

Carrying a backpack? You’ll be able to bring it along with you. On the Ice Flyer, you’ll need to wear it on the front. A backpack is a convenient option for carrying along extra layers, as well as a water bottle so you can stay hydrated at the higher elevation to help avoid altitude sickness.

As always, I recommend checking the weather forecast. If bad weather is in the forecast, you’ll probably want to reschedule your visit.

In addition to these essentials, I brought along my Insta360 Go 3 camera – an action camera that I wore on a magnetic pendant (included). I was able to get some great videos in the Glacier Cave, the Cliffwalk, and the Ice Flyer. I’d recommend purchasing the optional magnetic safety cord to keep it secure.

Where to Stay For Your Mount Titlis Trip

In addition to the three hotels operated by the mountain, there are some lodging options in the area. Search the map below for various options.

For our trip, we just visited Titlis for the day, and spent multiple days in Lucerne. This Swiss Alps city is located on beautiful Lake Lucerne and offers so much to do. There are so many top-notch hotels in Lucerne – we stayed at the Renaissance Lucerne .

Titlis Rotair cable car

First ascended in 1739, Mount Titlis lies to the south of Lake Lucerne and is often visited as an alternative to the Jungfrau. It is the highest peak in Switzerland’s Uri Alps north of the Susten Pass, rising to 3,238 metres above sea level.

It is also home to the world’s first rotating cable car, known as the Titlis Rotair , which offers dazzling panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

At the top station, an illuminated tunnel carved through the ancient blue ice of the glacier leads to the Glacier Cave, while for the more actively-minded, there are various hiking trails that start at the end at the Trübsee cable car station.

If that’s not enough, the Titlis Cliff Walk boasts the highest suspension bridge in Europe.

During the summer months, it’s possible to rent a row boat and explore Trübsee lake at a relaxed pace, or zoom across the sky attached to the Trübsee Flyer zipline.

Opting to make the journey from Lucerne to Mount Titlis also gives visitors the chance to get a bird’s eye view of the mountain’s glacier – the region’s only accessible glacier – from the Ice Flyer chairlift.

Operating over both the summer and winter months, when it doubles as a ski lift for the ski run, the Ice Flyer Titlis provides a unique means of getting to the mountain’s free, child-friendly snow tubing and sledging run.

When it comes to warming up, there are a number of cafes and restaurants dotted about the mountain, generally around the cable car stations, which offer hot drinks, snacks, and traditional Swiss mountain cuisine.

Cogwheel train ascending Mt. Rigi with a view down to Lake Lucerne

Sometimes known as ‘the Queen of the mountains’ (Rigi comes from Regina, the Latin word for queen), Mount Rigi is another mountain massif.

It is surrounded by lakes Lucerne, Zug, and Lauerz, and on a clear day, it’s possible to see seven different bodies of water from the top.

The summit, Rigi Kulm , lies 1,798 metres above sea level, in the Schwyzer Alps, due east of Lucerne across the lake.

The mountain claims ownership of not only the oldest mountain railway in Europe, but also the highest standard gauge lines on the continent – the Rigi Railways.

Like Mounts Titlis and Pilatus, Rigi is a popular site for hiking in summer with skiing and tobogganing possible in winter.

Mt. Rigi boasts a hiking area of 90 square kilometres, covering some 120 kilometres of marked trails, which offer various viewpoints with expansive vistas across the region.

The Classic Trail remains popular and leads from Rigi Kulm to Rigi Kaltbad (where you can relax with a hot drink or ice cream, depending on the time of year and prevailing weather conditions) via Staffel.

At just four kilometres in length, with a difference in altitude of only 300 metres and well-maintained paths leading down, it’s a great route for families looking to get a sense of the mountain.

How to get to Mt. Rigi from Lucerne

Classic Rigi Round Trip:

  • Vitznau to Rigi Kulm – cogwheel train
  • Rigi Kulm to Rigi Kaltbad – cogwheel train
  • Rigi Kaltbad to Weggis – cable car
  • Weggis to Lucerne – boat or train

There are a couple of different ways to travel from Lucerne to Mt. Rigi. You can travel either via Vitznau, Arth-Goldau or Weggis.

The first option is to take a train and bus, or boat, to Vitznau which takes about an hour. Services operate year round. You can then board the Vitznau-Rigi-Bahn rack railway to Rigi Kulm (via Rigi Kaltbad).

The second option entails catching a train from Lucerne to Weggis, a gondola lift from Weggis to Rigi Kaltbad, a resort town at 1,400 metres, and then a cable car for the final leg to Rigi Kulm.

Combining route options one and two above results in what is commonly known as the Classic Rigi Round Trip .

The third option is to get to Arth-Goldau which can be reached by train in around 35 minutes from Lucerne. From there the Arth-Rigi-Bahn rack railway transports passengers to Krabel where they join a cable car to travel on to Rigi Kulm.

The Weggis cableway is closed for a short period in November and then again in March/April. Click here for closure dates.

Preparing yourself for the mountains

As each of these mountain peaks lies high above the snowline, and often above the cloud-line, you should not expect that the weather in Lucerne to be indicative of that on the mountains themselves.

While you should prepare for low temperatures, it can get warm on the peaks, particularly in summer, so the best option is to dress in easily added or removable layers.

Gloves, sunglasses, and a warm hat shouldn’t be forgotten, alongside sturdy, closed shoes.

Keep a close eye on the Mount Rigi, Mount Titlis, or Mount Pilatus weather before considering any trip into the mountains.

Many hotels in Lucerne, as well as the Tourist Office, have webcams showing live video from the mountain summits.

These live-streamed images can help you to determine if the Mt. Pilatus, Mt. Rigi or Mt. Titlis weather is suitable for a day trip.

Visiting Mt. Titlis, Mt. Pilatus and Mt. Rigi from further afield

Private tours to all three mountains are also available from Lucerne, Zurich, Interlaken and other destinations in Switzerland.

From Zurich to Mount Titlis: 3 Best Ways to Get There

Written by Diana Bocco Updated Jan 20, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Whether you're visiting the mountain for some active snow fun or for the amazing Alpine views, Mount Titlis is one of the best high-altitude destinations in the country all year.

The easiest way to get from Zurich to Mount Titlis to get the most out of your trip is to join a guided tour , as these usually combine all the major activities in the area into a full day — tickets and equipment rental included — where you can skip the lines and get right into the action.

For independent travelers, the train offers great views and a chance to experience a different side of Switzerland. By car is another alternative.

To help you plan your trip — no matter how you choose to reach your destination — here are the best ways to travel from Zurich to Mount Titlis.

On This Page:

  • From Zurich to Mount Titlis by Tour Bus
  • From Zurich to Mount Titlis By Train
  • From Zurich to Mount Titlis by Car

1. From Zurich to Mount Titlis by Tour Bus

TITLIS Rotair cable car on Mount Titlis

There are no public buses you can take to get you to Mount Titlis, so if you want to reach the mountain on a bus, you'll have to find a tour one. A good option is the Mount Titlis Snow Experience Day from Zurich tour, which lets you experience the best of the mountain and spend a day playing in the snow before you head back to Zurich.

The tour departs at 9:30 from the Sihlquai Bus Terminal in Zurich, where an air-conditioned vehicle with a multilingual guide will pick you up for a nine-hour adventure, including the best of the Mount Titlis and the lakes around it.

The first few minutes of the drive take you through the streets of Zurich, where you'll see the Albis Pass mountain pass and drive along the shores of Lake Lucerne, also known as the Lake of the Four Cantons because of the four sharp bends that define its shape.

Here, you'll stop at Lake Lucerne for a photo opportunity. Lake Lucerne is surrounded by steep mountains and has soft greenish-blue waters. After your guide points out some of the most important landmarks around —including the covered wooden Chapel Bridge and the 17 th -century Baroque Jesuit Church — you'll have an hour to discover the Old Town center and the beautiful shoreline before you continue on to the next stop.

Your next stop is Lake Trubsee , accessed by an aerial cable car. Here, you'll spend 60 minutes playing in the snow — borrow skis to slide down the mountain or grab a snow tube for some easier fun if you can't ski.

After an hour of fun, you'll be on your way again to take the TITLIS Rotair, the world's first revolving cable car , to the top of Mount Titlis. During the five-minute-long ascent, the cable car rotates a full 360 degrees, allowing all-around panoramic views over the snow-covered peaks before you reach the summit station, over 3,000 meters above sea level.

Take in the impressive mountain views for 60 minutes before you take the cable back down. After this, your driver will take you back to the original departure point in Zurich.

2. From Zurich to Mount Titlis By Train

Engelberg valley and Mount Titlis

If you're traveling on your own, the best way to reach Mount Titlis is by train. The journey takes just under two hours and offers some stunning views along the way — lakes and waterways, snow-kissed mountain peaks, and charming little mountain villages all make for great photo opportunities.

Trains depart from Zürich Hauptbahnhof station every hour starting at 6am. You'll need to catch the Zentralbahn train and get off at the Lucerne station 45 minutes later. Here, find the train to Engelberg, which leaves every hour on the hour.

The one-hour journey from here to Mount Titlis offers awe-inspiring landscapes of vast mountain ranges, picturesque flowering valleys, and some of the country's most dramatic scenery.

Once you arrive at the station, you can catch Bus No.1 right outside. It's a free shuttle that will bring you right to TITLIS valley station, at the foot of the mountain. On a nice day, walking the route is a better option — it's just 10 minutes away on foot, and you'll get to breathe the clean mountain air and snap some shots along the way.

Tip: Leave from Zurich early in the morning to enjoy a full day on Mount Titlis. With so many things to see and do on the mountain and almost four hours spent just on transportation, an early morning train is the only way to truly make the most of your visit to Mount Titlis.

Another reason to allow several hours on the mountain is that foggy, cloudy days don't allow for great visibility of the stunning surroundings — and the longer you spend on the mountain, the higher the chances the weather will clear up even on an overcast day.

3. From Zurich to Mount Titlis by Car

Titlis Cliff Walk, Europe's highest suspension bridge

If you're up for the adventure of exploring completely on your own, you can rent a car at Zurich airport and find your way to Engelberg and then to Mount Titlis.

The fastest route between the two points is via highway A4/A2 . There's 91 kilometers between Zurich and Mount Titlis – about one hour and 15 minutes driving in good traffic conditions. You will need a GPS for this route, as there are plenty of name changes, half exits, and turns along the way, and it's not very clear which one gets you to your destination.

On the way, you'll cross Lake Lucerne, which has plenty of public parking spaces available — including a large one at the railway station — so you can stop at any point for some great photo opportunities. This is also a great stop for an early lunch or dinner on your way back to the car.

The pleasant drive gets a little tricky in the second half, as winding, icy mountain roads can be difficult to maneuver in winter. The breathtaking views along the way more than make up for it — but the roads are often narrow once you're driving up the mountains, so no stopping for pics here. If you're arriving in winter, make sure you have some experience driving in icy winter conditions before renting a car.

Once you reach Engelberg, you must park your car at the TITLIS valley station (parking is per day, not per hour, and costs double in winter) and continue the rest of the way up the mountain using a cable lift — cars are not allowed at the foot of the mountain, and much of the center of town is pedestrian-only, so be ready to explore on foot.

How To Get From Lucerne To Mt Titlis And Pilatus – A Detailed Guide

  • By Katie Mac
  • December 20, 2016

UPDATED JUN 2022. Lucerne is unique because it where you can blend a cityscape with outdoor adventure. During the day you can take a cable car to the top of the Swiss Alps and explore the most epic, out of this world scenery. Then, in the evening, you can stroll through one of the most charming cities and sit down at a nice restaurant for fondue. It is the best of both worlds. Here’s my guide on how to get from Lucerne to Mt Titlis and Pilatus with all the tips you need to be prepared for some epic adventures. I hope this can help you plan your own day trips!

Here's a solo female travel guide with everything you need to know about how to get from Lucerne to Mt Titlis and Pilatus.

Use a Tell Pass for public transport

This tip is first because it saved me a lot of money!

I recommend getting a Tell Pass which is a public transport pass. I got mine from the information office at the Lucerne train station.

This will cover all of the costs of your public transport to and from the summits of the mountains. It costs about 120 CHF ($125 USD) for 2 days.

It’s super convenient because when you go to and from AND up and down the mountains, all you need to do is show your pass instead of buying a ticket at each leg of the journey.

Best of all though, it is much cheaper than buying the tickets separately.

Here’s the Tell Pass website for more information .

mount titlis trip

Getting from Lucerne to Mt Titlis is easy and scenic!

How to get from Lucerne to Mt Titlis

  • Train from Lucerne to Engelberg station
  • Cable car to the summit

It’s easy to get to Mt Titlis from Lucerne using the train.

The journey will take you approximately 45 minutes. From there, walk the short distance towards the cable cars which will take you to the summit.

For the cable car section of the journey, it was very simple to follow the signs on the way up and any time I was unsure, the staff were very helpful.

If you get the Tell Pass I mentioned earlier, then you just need to show that at the first cable car station and they will give you a pass for the cable cars.

Lucerne to Mt Titlis

Outdoor activities at Mt Titlis

Once you get to the top you have many options available to you. The building is very well signed to help you find your way.

If you want to see more of the impressive views on the mountain, take the Ice Flier .

On this, you can sit down, let your legs hang, and cruise above with birds-eye views to leave you speechless.

There is also the Cliff Walk which was unfortunately closed the day I visited. It’s Europe’s highest suspension bridge so if it’s open when you visit, it’d be a cool thing to do.

mount titlis trip

If you don’t want to do the extra activities, just being outside on the top of the mountain is quite an incredible experience.

There is room to walk around so you can get a couple of nice photos of the views and play in the snow. You can also hike, hit the slopes on your skis, or even try tubing at the Glacier Park.

There’s a lot to do and a little something for everyone.

Lucerne to Mt Titlis

Indoor activities at Mt Titlis

I recommend the indoor Glacier Cave which even has flowers frozen in large ice blocks. It’s a walk-through attraction and doesn’t cost any extra to see so worth taking the 5 minutes to go through.

After you’re done outside, you can move indoors to get a sweet treat from the chocolate shop, take some photos in authentic Swiss costumes, or get some lunch from the cafeteria.

Word of warning, this is a touristy area and the food is quite expensive so be prepared for that. For example, I got a 600ml bottle of water which cost about 5 CHF (about $5 USD.)

mount titlis trip

How to get to Mt Pilatus from Lucerne

  • Bus from outside Lucerne to Mt Pilatus

To get there from Lucerne, just take the bus from outside the Lucerne station.

It is the #1 Kriens bus on the opposite side of the road, heading away from town. The ride took about 15 minutes and there was an announcement for the Mount Pilatus stop so it was very easy to get there.

*If you search the public transport options on Google Maps and enter from Lucerne to Mt Pilatus, it’ll come up as about 4 hours. Don’t freak out, it’s factoring a 4 hour walk from the station instead of the cable car up.*

From the bus stop, walk a couple of minutes to the cable cars. This path is very clearly signed and easy to follow.

As with Mount Titlis, if you get the Tell Pass pass you need to show it to the staff at the cable car entry and they will give you a scan card to get you to the cable cars.

The cable car journey to get to the summit was nothing short of epic!

The views you get as you ascend through the clouds are beyond incredible and seem to go on forever. It is so awe-inspiring that it feels as though you are leaving the world below and moving to a whole new, heavenly world.

mount titlis trip

How to get to Mt Pilatus on the cog railway

Alternatively, you could get to the summit by taking the world’s steepest cog railway.

For this, take the train from Lucerne to  Alpnachstad station . It is closed during winter so if you visit in winter, take the bus. I could see the railway from the summit and it looked like it would be a really fun journey.

Prior to visiting, I had read that many people will take this option to get to the summit, then return via the bus or vice versa.

mount titlis trip

What to do at Mt Pilatus

Mt Pilatus seems more of a lookout style when compared with the activity heavy Mount Titlis, though there are still some winter snow sports to do on this mountain as well.

In my opinion, the views are must-see. They’re even better to see later in the day.

When the sky changes colors around the blanket of clouds that hug the mountain peaks, it’s hypnotizing. I feel as though my photos do not do the views justice at all.

But, hopefully, they give you a taste of the beauty to be seen.
