The British band comprised of Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons, and Adrian Utley have made some of the most influential music of the last 30 years.

The English band who take their name from the nearby to Bristol town of Portishead are rightly credited with fusing electronica and experimental rock into a style that has been tagged trip-hop. To be honest that is not a shorthand term they have endorsed and as with soul mates Tricky and Massive Attack , those using it are apt to receive a frosty response. Utilising breakbeats, acid house, soul, funk and jazz the music they create has an ethereal quality with a visceral punch. The combination of Beth Gibbons haunting vocals – she cites Nina Simone , Edith Piaf, Sugarcubes and the Cocteau Twins idiosyncratic singer Liz Fraser as influences – allied to the production and instrumental skills of Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley add up to a remarkable sound.

The emphasis on sonic clarity is bolstered by engineer Dave McDonald who worked with the trio on their debut disc Dummy , a gothic and noir collection that would sweep the board at the fourth Mercury Music Prize in 1995. The spacey jazz melodies and emotional density of “Sour Times” and “Glory Box” did it for the judges. The competition was intense: the Oasis album Definitely Maybe and the Supergrass classic I Should Coco were also in contention. Previous winners were Primal Scream, Suede and M People. Dummy  has since featured in many a select list of great albums of the 20th century and it has lost none of its appeal in the following years. The self-titled Portishead charted high in the US and made #2 in Britain.

Third (2008) expanded their palette with elements of soundtrack, psych surf and a dark take on atmospheric krautrock with the results conjuring shadowy images of the scores to Blade Runner and The Terminator . Despite those denser Sci-Fi textures, Third  became a big seller. Another 2nd place in the UK and a top ten #7 on the Billboard chart heralded a return to live work after a hiatus of nine to ten years. Portishead curated the 2007 All Tomorrow’s Parties fest, embarked on a 2008 European tour and headlined the prestigious Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April that year. The Last.fm free stream of Third  was a groundbreaker in that medium with over 300,000 logging on in the first 24 hours. More awards and kudos ensured gold sales but all their works continue to find their way into discerning collections: the debut has long since gone double platinum. These are high quality, timeless albums that pretty much demand discovery and repay close investigation

Barrow and Gibbons were born in the West Country and coincidentally both had parents who divorced. Adrian Utley, the oldest member, hails from Northampton and he brought along a love of vintage guitars and effects, jazz training and the bouncy grooves of hip-hop. A mutual love for drum loops, sampled breaks, James Brown and Blue Note golden era sounds became the background over which Gibbons’ husky contralto conjured up visions of smoky jazz lounges. Then again one detects layers of ska and swing and the riff from Isaac Hayes ’ “Ike’s Rap 11” on the monumental “Glory Box”. In that sense, Portishead are comparable to the best French house scene makers, always prone to locate the funk button. “Sour Times” samples Lalo Schifrin’s “The Danube Incident”, “Wandering Star” beds in War’s “Magic Mountain” and “Biscuit”, weirdest of all, goes to the root of Johnny Ray’s “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again”.

The sensuous cabaret mood is everywhere on Dummy  and it remains a highpoint of 1994 while the singles “Numb”, “Sour Times” and “Glory Box” are classics in any genre.

The Portishead album showed that brilliant start to be no flash in the pan. The singles “All Mine”, “Over” and “Only You” graced the airwaves with additional horns, Clive Deamer’s click drumming, extra violin, and keyboards simmering perfectly. The outstanding opening track “Cowboys” is one of Gibbons’ most intriguing lyrics: ‘Did you feed us tales of deceit/ Conceal the tongues who need to speak/ Subtle lies and a soiled coin/ The truth is sold, the deal is done….’ Spooky in the extreme, this could be music made by androids.

With extra attention to sonic detail and smart cinematic videos to backdrop their tunes, Portishead’s scratch deck approach translated well in America where they played an epic concert at the Roseland In 1997 accompanied by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and a five-piece horn ensemble. Go Beat released a DVD of that event in 2002 and it’s one of the most stupendous things you will witness.

After three years of touring and various external issues, Barrow put Portishead on hold because he’d grown disillusioned with music in general. In 2002 Gibbons made her solo debut with former Talk Talk bassist Paul Webb using the pseudonym Rustin Man. Out of Season was a quiet success but is an essential purchase for her fans and it also went silver. Meanwhile, Barrow and Utley remained locked in their studios but emerged to produce The Coral’s’ psychedelic gem The Invisible Invasion and enthused by the young Merseysiders energy decided to reactive their own band.

Third eventually dropped in Spring 2008. Using a battery of analogue synths, ancient drum machine FX and even a hurdy-gurdy on “Magic Doors” which would be cleverly remixed later by DJ Green Lantern, the songs are perfectly Portisheadian. Other key tracks are “The Rip”, something Radiohead covered, and the pulsating “Machine Gun”, a number that became huge on the hip-hop and club circuit and would have had Portishead feted as superstars in America, had they been the types to do the social whirl. Given that Third has attained top ten placings in 18 territories it’s apparent that the band remain in demand though they haven’t released anything officially since 2009’s “Chase the Tear”, a fundraiser for Amnesty International UK.

They have enjoyed playing the festival circuits and were rapturously received at Latitude and Benicassim where their set included “Mysterons”, the crowd slaying “Sour Times” and “We Carry On”. Barrow has promised new music is bubbling away but no dates are specified. Don’t worry though because it will be worth the wait. With Portishead it always is.

“We haven’t been to Australia for a very long while,” he tells me, “and the idea of playing a big, corporate festival wasn’t really appealing to us, you know what I mean? These days, most things are sponsored by massive phone companies, to the point where you go to a gig and feel like you’re prey. That is pretty much the complete opposite of what festivals are supposed to be about. The Harvest festival, with the lineup it has, and the place it’s going to be held, seems to have a very specific thing in mind, and that suits us. I don’t want to seem elitist,” he continues, with a wry chuckle, “but would you rather be sharing a stage with Bruno Mars or The Flaming Lips? Of course you’d rather it be The Flaming Lips. You want to be playing to people who know what you’re doing.”

For many years, Portishead simply did not like to play live, but the recording of their third album helped turn that around. “On our first two records, we would play something live, then loop it and treat it and put it onto vinyl, then fuck up the vinyl and sample it for the recording,” he says. “After the second album, though, I started to find that whole process mind-numbingly boring – things needed to change.” Finding inspiration in bands like Can and Kraftwerk, the band fundamentally altered their approach for their third album, leading to a sound less intricate and vastly more immediate. “The music became about tuning and timing,” he tells me. “On our first two records, we were exploring blues through the lens of European soundtrack music, but Third was embedded in psychedelic music and Krautrock.”

Like a good many of the group’s Australian fans, Harvest will be the first chance I get to actually witness Portishead live; I’m very curious, therefore, to know what we can actually expect from the show. “It’s a bit of a machine,” Barrow says. “It’s pretty pounding, but not in a dance kind of way. We can’t just turn up and play a show on any kind of stage and with any kind of sound rig. It’s a very specific set-up. We’ve got to have two PAs – one for Beth and one for us. There’s loads of processing, but it’s all natural and organic. I mean, our show is not us opening up a computer and hitting a button marked Dance Effect 35. It’s all really old gear.”

Barrow and his band-made Adrian Utley treasure their vintage gear, but it can be difficult to keep so many old synths, mixers and pedals in line – that’s where Hugh comes in. “We’ve very lucky, in that we have a Hugh,” Barrow tells me with a laugh. “Hugh is a guy who tours with us who is able to fix absolutely anything in record time, and he spends most of the show with a torch on his head and a soldering iron. There is only one Hugh in the world, and he’s spectacular. He’s very important. I mean, if we arrived somewhere without him and something didn’t work, we’d have to send it away to a shop, and it would be a nightmare. We can’t live without him. Our gear is very temperamental as is – we have to take backups of everything in case it breaks down.”

I have trouble imaging a singer as fragile as Beth holding up in front of a festival crowd, but Barrow assures me that she has it down to a fine art. “Beth’s good,” he tells me. “She’s an incredible singer and songwriter. When it comes to playing live, she has to work really hard to remember where her cues are, but she’s always been like that, and we’ve got it down to a fine art at this point. It’s a bit difficult for all of us,” he continues. “I mean, it still feels somewhat ridiculous being up on stage in front of an audience of 30,000. We’re up there playing our old gear, putting together a 5,000-piece jigsaw puzzle every night, and it can be incredibly stressful, because more than anything, we really want to get it right.”

Before letting Barrow go, I would be remiss if I didn’t ask about the possibility of a new Portishead album sometime in the near future. “I’m going to go back into the studio in January,” he tells me. “What that will mean, I don’t know. I’m not sure whether Beth or Adrian will be up for it at that point, and it’s not like I would try and come up with Portishead stuff without them, but I’ve got to get myself into a place again where I can start writing. I plan to switch everything else in my brain off at that point and focus only on Portishead.”

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell in "Anyone But You."

Anyone But You finally made its Netflix streaming debut, which is exciting news for rom-com fans everywhere. As you watch the movie, you might be wondering where Anyone But You was filmed and if you can visit the breathtaking beaches, cliffs, and other locations in real life.

Loosely adapted from Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing,” Anyone But You stars Glen Powell as Ben, a finance bro who has an incredible first date with Bea (Sydney Sweeney), a law student uncertain about her career. After spending the night, Bea panics and leaves without telling him. When she realizes she made a mistake and returns to his apartment, she overhears Ben saying that she is a “nothing” to him.

Years later, they unexpectedly reunite at a destination wedding in Australia for Bea’s sister, who is marrying Ben’s friend. When their exes show up, they pretend to be a couple—and the rest is history. The film was directed and co-written by Will Gluck, the filmmaker behind rom-coms like Easy A and Friends with Benefits . It was released in December and had an impressive run at the box office, surpassing $88 million domestically and $219 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo .

After its release, the movie went viral on TikTok as audience goers reacted to the film’s credit sequence, which features the cast dancing and singing to Natasha Bedingfield’s nostalgic 2004 hit “Unwritten,” a song highlighted throughout the film. There were also rumors of an off-screen romance between Powell and Sweeney that helped promote the film, as well as the actors’ flirty publicity tour and Sydney Sweeney’s SNL monologue .

Now, Anyone But You is back in the limelight after the film was released on Netflix on April 23, quickly becoming the No. 1 movie on the platform in the U.S. after just one day.

Anyone But You was filmed in parts of Australia around New South Wales and Sydney. Director Will Gluck told The Hollywood Reporter that he wanted the film set in Sydney because he had “really fallen in love with the city” and liked it so much he moved his family there.

“Almost every time you shoot a movie in Sydney, you have to pretend it’s somewhere else and frame out the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. For Anyone But You , I thought, “Why do that?” We actually wrote this movie 100 percent for Sydney — very specific to the destination,” Gluck wrote.

The director continued, “We flew helicopters all over — seeing the city from that vantage point is stunning — and landed one at the Opera House, shut down the Harbour Bridge, filmed at the Queen Victoria Building, and shot for two weeks overlooking Bondi Beach,” he said. “We spent a week on a boat in Sydney Harbour shooting a scene where they’re stranded on a buoy, but you can’t have humans in the water without a shark cage, so we had to have one the whole time. You pinch yourself. It’s so unbelievable we were actually doing these things.”

Here are a few specific Anyone But You filming locations you can visit in person.

Sydney Opera House

The Sydney Opera House is a focal point in Anyone But You. The 20th-century architectural landmark serves as a gorgeous backdrop for big moments, including the end scene when Ben passionately kisses Bea, who is standing at the top of the steps. You can visit the performing arts center for special events and tours.

Marks Park, Bondi

Located in Sydney's northern suburbs, the wedding scene in Anyone But You was filmed at Marks Park overlooking Bondi Beach and the Pacific Ocean. The cliff-top park is open to the public and has fitness stations, a playground, and some shaded areas.

Many of Anyone But You ’s breathtaking beach scenes were filmed around Palm Beach. Director Will Gluck told THR that one of the best parts of filming was on location in Palm Beach, a suburb in the Northern Beaches.

“Our caravans were parked right on the water, and Glen and Sydney and I decided to live there the whole time. We’d shoot all day and all the crew would go home, then we’d jump in the water and have a swim, go to our trailers and have dinner sitting outside,” he said. “It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world, and you normally wouldn’t be allowed to sleep there. It was probably the most fun I’ve ever had filming.”

The historic Jones Bay Wharf is another familiar filming location in Anyone But You. The hidden gem in the Pyrmont district is home to fine dining restaurants, charming cafes, and beautiful views the of the city and Harbour Bridge.

While on their way to collect flowers for the wedding, Ben and his friend Pete are seen walking alongside the Queen Victoria Building. The Romanesque 19th-century building is actually a five-level shopping center with fashion boutiques, jewelry stores, cafes, and restaurants.

The Weeknd

The Weeknd’s postponed tour of Australia is now canceled and ticket owners will be refunded.

The Canadian R&B superstar had initially scheduled an 11-date stadium tour of Australia and New Zealand, winding its way across both countries last November and December.

“The Weeknd ‘After Hours Til Dawn Tour’ for Australia & New Zealand is still in process of being rescheduled,” reads a statement from LN, seen by Billboard . “Whilst we continue to work through the rescheduling process with the artist, tickets for the existing 2023 tour will be cancelled with all ticket holders receiving a full refund accordingly.”

Ticket holders of the The Weeknd’s ‘After Hours Til Dawn Tour’ shows who previously held on to their tickets will be able to access a priority purchase window for the new tour in Australia and New Zealand when announced, the message reads, linking to a priority waitlist . All current ticket holders will receive an automatic refund.

The tour was originally announced last August with just four shows, visiting each of Australia’s big three east coast cities — Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane — and including a single date in Auckland, NZ.

Additional dates were added last September , boosting the itinerary to 11 across both markets.

The Weeknd’s tour is scrapped as Australia’s festivals market navigates turbulent waters. In recent weeks, the 2024 editions of Splendour in the Grass, Mona Foma, and Groovin The Moo, with soft ticket sales playing a part in each story.

The inaugural Soundcheck report, published by Creative Australia, found the climate for operating a festival was a “highly complex” one, with event organizers challenged with myriad issues, from rapidly increasing costs, changing ticket buying behavior and more.

In the U.S., he has landed seven No. 1s on the Billboard Hot 100 and four No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200.

On Australia’s ARIA Albums Chart, published last Friday, April 19 , the Weeknd’s hits collection The Highlights lifts 8-4 in its 167th week on the tally. It’s triple-platinum certified in Australia.

LOS ANGLES (AP) — Grace Kim opened a four-stroke lead Friday in the LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship, shooting a 5-under 66 in tricky afternoon conditions at Wilshire Country Club.

A stroke ahead after an opening 64, Kim had an eagle, four birdies and a bogey to get to 12-under 130. The 23-year-old Australian patiently worked her way around the tree-lined layup, trying not to get frustrated with the bumpy greens.

“I think the less thoughts, the better,” Kim said. “Obviously, during the afternoon round today, we’ve got poa annua greens so just have to stay patient with them. You can kind of see how it can get bumpy, so working with the course and not getting too wrapped up around putts not going in.”

Maja Stark was second after a 69, also in the afternoon.

“I feel like maybe not taking everything so personal because they are a little bit wobbly.” Stark said. “Especially late. Like the whole day pretty much the ball has been wobbling because there has been so many people walking on it.”

The Swede finished second last week in Texas in The Chevron Championship, two strokes behind top-ranked Nelly Korda in the first major of the year. Korda withdrew Monday, a day after her fifth straight victory.

Defending champion Hannah Green of Australia shot a 69 to join Germany’s Esther Henseleit (68) at 6 under. Denmark’s Kristine Pedersen (67) and American Auston Kim (71) were 5 under, and Rose Zhang (69) topped the group at 4 under.

Grace Kim won the LOTTE Championship last year in a playoff in Hawaii for her first LPGA Tour title. She missed the cut in The Chevron , shooting 76-72.

She started play Friday on the back nine, rebounding from a bogey on the par-3 12th with the eagle on the par-5 13th and a birdie on the par-4 14th. On 13, she hit a 5-wood to 10 feet. She added birdies on Nos. 3, 6 and 7 on the second nine.

“I think I’ve got to breathe a little bit,” she said. “I did get a little bit nervous on my back nine, so making sure I don’t rush too much and just staying in the present.
