41 Awesome Things to Do in Samos (+ Best Samos Beaches)

Here are all the best things to do in Samos, Greece, for your next Greek holiday. If you’re wondering what to do in Samos, here’s everything you need to know…

andreas and the boat

Samos is definitely overlooked by us Brits. Thanks to the likes of Santorini, Corfu, Skiathos, Mykonos and Crete, it’s kind of under the radar. This is good for us in the know that are going though. It means the prices are better, there are less people at the beach, and we can enjoy the genuine Greek charm without it being laid on for tourists.

Picturesque Pythagorio town on Samos island, Greece.

Samos is known for being a rocky island. It’s hilly, very close to Turkey, and is the sixth biggest island in Greece. My brother’s wife, Xanthi, is from Samos, so after hearing all about it, the first time I went was for their wedding. I went back again a year later, and then I went again in 2021 to meet their first baby. I think a Samos trip in 2024 could be next on the cards!

There are lots of things to do in Samos. This holiday guide to Samos will tell you all the best spots to explore, and the most interesting things to do.

Best things to do in Samos

Here are all the activities in Samos for anyone planning a trip there.

things to do in Samos

My top 5 Samos activities

1. relax in pythagorio.

You can’t really go to Samos and not have a night in Pythagorio. The pretty horseshoe shaped harbour is filled with restaurants, ice cream shops and cute places to explore as you walk down. It’s also where a lot of the boat trips go from, and where you’ll find the statue of Samos’ most famous resident, Pythagoras, the mathematician.

eating in Pythagorio

Don’t leave Pythagorio without trying the avocado and egg toast at Pergamonto . It had me looking in all the shops for the pesto they used. Delicious.

The gelato at Storiadolce is a definite do. Get that pistachio with a biscuit in. Ooo yeahhh.

2. The mountain towns

Hire a car from Savvas Rentals and drive up to Manolates, in the mountains. This pretty town makes for a lovely afternoon of wandering about. There are some art galleries, trinket shops and a shaded restaurant too. More on this fun thing to do in Samos below…

3. Visit Psili Amos Beach at Marathokampos

Psili Amos is my favourite beach on the main island of Samos. It’s sandy, which means a lot on this rocky island. It’s also sheltered from the wind which is so prevalent on the north coast near Kokkari. There are sunbeds which you’ll need to buy drinks to use, and it’s a great thing to do in Samos if you have kids with you.

There are also 3-4 tavernas here. I’ve tried two – Stefanakos Tavern at the back, and the one down the side with the octopus hanging out the front. I’ve been there twice in fact as their souvlaki is spectacular, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend the calamari!

4. Spend the day at Proteas Blu

I love Proteas Blu Hotel . I’ve seen a lot of hotel pools in my line of work, but this is my favourite. I love the pool, the beach bar, the beach, the hammocks and the range of comfortable beds too. Proteas Blu is absolutely one of my most favourite things to do in Samos.

It’s definitely one of the best places to stay in Samos.

what to do Samos

My boyfriend and I spent our first anniversary here just lying on the beds on the beach and ordering gin and tonics to the bed, on the beach. It was fantastic.

samos chillin

I’ve never actually stayed here, but phone them up as a courtesy to check and they’ll give you a visitor pass for the day. Well, they always have for me anyway!

Or, you can check out the prices to stay at Proteas Blu Resort on Booking.com .

5. Boat trip with Andreas

Take a boat trip out to Samiopula Island with Andreas and you’ll get to see the south of the island without actually having to drive it.

From the comfort of the boat you can see the beaches, along the south coast and pick your favourite. Samiopula Island is beautiful. The boat will drop you on the south side and it’s a 5-minute walk over the top to the paradise beach. It’s a bit rocky but there were plenty of oldies doing it so as long as you have some good shoes you’ll be alright. I did it in flip flops.

samos road trip

We paid €35 each for a group trip to Samiopula, then a trip to a beach with a BBQ lunch, then a stop in the sea for a jump off the boat and back to where we started in Pythagorio. It was a great day out and totally worth every penny.

boat trip in Samos

The holiday companies might try to charge you €50 but just go direct to Captain Andreas’ boat in Pythagorio – outside the frozen yogurt shop – and you’ll get a better deal direct. Every day it’s a different tour, to a different place, so it could be good to check the day before.

The private beach he takes you to is amazing!

10 best Samos beaches

The beaches are some of the best things to do in Samos, of course. Here are my favourites…

1. Potokaki Beach

samos road trip

Potokaki Beach is one of my favourite beaches on Samos. It’s under the airport runway, which is way better than it sounds. You get to watch the planes go over at close proximity – it’s only around 5 a day so it’s not like you’re lying under the Heathrow flight path or anything.

Feels a bit like Ibiza at the Monday Circo Loco parties at DC10 – anyone? Misspent youth.

food in samos

The sun beds are super comfy here, the sea seems calmer and the Almrya Cafe serves excellent food. This is a great place to stop if you’ve had to leave your accommodation early on your final day in Samos, and you’re waiting for your flight. It’s less than a 5-minute drive to the airport.

2. Kokkari Bay

Kokkari Bay is another great Samos Beach, just round the corner from one of the most popular areas in Samos, Kokkari. You can walk across the top to get there – which is probably the safest option – or you can walk through the sea – watch those tides. This is a bit sketchy but totally possible.

Activities in Samos

I thought it’d be fun at first for me, mum and dad to walk through, but then as I realised how slippy it was my mind changed to working out what kind of a lifeguard I’d be when they fell in.

Parents did me proud.

This is a great beach with comfy loungers and a nice little bay too. Loungers are two for €7, and you can have a massage overlooking the bay too. There’s a restaurant called Basilico which I haven’t tried yet, but I will next time I’m there.

You can also walk out to the rocks and take posing pictures, like I have.

3. Potami Beach

Samos Potami Beach

Visit Potami Beach and you can fit the waterfalls in too – more on that below. Check out the Cafe del Mundo restaurant for a nice coffee with hippy vibes. Next time I go I’d definitely like to spend more time here.

Cafe Mund Potami

On your way to Potami make sure to stop at St Nicholas Church for a stunning view. The church is a slick and beautiful design and looks out over a beautiful beach. This is an iconic view in Samos.

Samos St Nicholas Church

4. Tsabou Beach

There are cool Mediterranean vibes here at Tsabou Beach. To be honest, last time I was there I conked out on the comfy bean bags as soon as I’d finished my (delicious) mango smoothie, and didn’t move again until it was time to leave.

Best beaches in samos

One of the greatest things about Tsabou Beach in Samos is that you can drive your car down right next to the beach, and you don’t have to hike down any cliff faces to get there. And please, order that mango smoothie.

5. Samiopula Beach

walking to samiopula beach

You can only reach Samiopula Beach by boat, so read back to point 5 up there on my list of the absolute best things to do in Samos and you’ll find the details of how to get there with boat captain Andreas. The beach is stunning, and one of the most private you’ll find.

8 best restaurants on Samos

I’ve spent over three weeks eating my way round Samos now, here are the best Samos restaurants I’ve found.

1. Two Spoons in Pythagorio

This official photo from Two Spoons in Pythagorio isn’t an exaggeration – this was the actual chocolate melty thing I had there and when you put your spoon in it, it all oozed out.

There’s also great coffee there, and gelato too.

Food in Samos

2. Prawn saganaki at Primavera

Had this on the first night last time I was in Samos, and it is SPECIAL. Bit of bread to dip in, and yum yum.

Eating is definitely one of the best things to do in Samos!

Update: CLOSED

3. Pizza at G irasole

If you want a good priced dinner while you’re in Samos, but still super tasty, then visit Girasole. You can easily have a pizza between two and they have loads of different flavours.

4. Spinach pie at Grandma’s

I absolutely love a spinach pie. This one at Grandma’s in Kokkari is a delight. That, an iced coffee and a bit of Greek salad – yum.

food in samos

5. Shrimps in ouzo at Meltimi

I’ve only eaten there once but Meltimi is my favourite restaurant on Samos. Located on the beach in Kokkari, its popularity shows. Get there early or book a table for the best one. The staff are lovely, they serve wine in wine glases (usually tumblers in Samos) and the food is absolutely delicious.

food in samos

We had taramasalata and feta in honey for a starter, between the three of us. Then I ordered the Meltimi Saganaki with ouzo sauce which was an absolute delight. Next time I go to Samos I’m 100% going back there.

6. Pancakes at Solid , Samos Town

Phwoooaaar, I mean, look at the size of these pancakes. Yum yum. FEAST.

pancakes in samos

Solid is a really nice cafe on the waterfront in Samos Town. Great coffee too.

7. Mixed dinner at Tarsanas

We accidentally happened on Tarsanas in Kokkari when we were on the hunt for shrimps. We’d only wanted a small dinner but ended up with about 5 appetisers between us. Feta in honey, tzatziki, and all sorts of Greek foodie delights to share.

We had the loveliness of the beach and then Greek and UK music coming from the live band next door. It was a wonderful experience.

8. Almyra Restaurant

This is the fab restaurant on Potokaki Beach that sits under the airport runway. I’d already posted the pics above but I don’t think you can ever get enough gyros, can you?

Historical things to do in Samos

I haven’t actually done any of these as I’ve been too busy on the beaches and in the restaurants, but, I didn’t want to write a list of the best things to do in Samos without a bit of history.

25. Efpalinios Aquaduct

My dad has been to the 1036-metre Tunnel of  Eupalino – he said it very ‘tight’. And with that, I had no need to visit or see it. I’m good with the fresh air thanks.

“The tunnel is the second known tunnel in history which was excavated from both ends, and the first with a geometry-based approach in doing so.” – eupalinos-tunnel.gr
  • 26. Walk through a traditional village like Paleokastro
  • 27. Archeological Museum in Samos Town
  • 28. Natural History Museum of the Aegean
  • 29. Monastery of Panagia Spilani

30. Pythagoras Statue

Oh, I’ve seen this one, many times.

“Pythagoras of Samos was an ancient Ionian Greek philosopher and the eponymous founder of Pythagoreanism. His political and religious teachings were well known in Magna Graecia and influenced the philosophies of Plato, Aristotle, and, through them, Western philosophy.”

You might know him best through his maths theories, mainly, Pythagoras’ Theorem. For any right-angled triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse (the longest side, opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the square of the other two sides.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to understand that to just go and see him on the harbour in Pythagoreio.

Best views in Samos

31. waterfalls at potami.

The waterfalls at Potami are probably one of the most adventurous things to do in Samos. This video below shows them in all their glory. As you can see, these guys have walked through them to get there, which could be a bit risky depending on your stability and swimming skills.

There is another alternative to see the Potami waterfalls. Drive from the road opposite the Church of St Nicolas in Potami, 50m past on the right. It’s cement and at parts gravel, but in good condition. Follow the sign that says Archontisa, have a nice glass of wine or amazing oven cooked food there, and then walk down 50m to see the water falls from the back side.

In the middle of summer there might not be much water to see, but you can still enjoy a look at somewhere different in Samos. I went on my last trip to Samos and we went in the fresh mountain water to the first waterfall, but decided to save the rest for another time.

32. The 3 Villages Walk

Join a hike (or go it alone) through the mountain top Μanolates, Mona Vronta and Drakei villages. I’ve already mentioned Manolates above, but there’s a pretty walk connecting the three.

samos mountain walk

It takes a few hairy hairpin bends to get up there, but once you’re up there it has great views out to see and over Samos.

Spend a few quid on the tourism while you’re up there. There’s a really nice cafe called Kalisti Cafe. Great toilet and tasty fresh orange juice. Would recommend.

samos road trip

You can also pick up a few bits of jewellery, trinkets and art if you need too.

33. From the plane!

Make sure to look out the window when you go in and out of Samos, the views of the coast line are impressive.

34. Mount Kerkis

One year I was invited by my Airbnb host to climb Mount Kerkis but declined when I realised it was two hours up and down. And it was hot.

If you’re really into your mountain views, then sure, go ahead, but go early and take lots of water!

35. Hammocks at Proteas Blu

Proteas Blu

The views from the hammocks at Proteas Blu is definitely one I think about on dark days in England!

Where to go shopping in Samos

36. walk through samos town.

Samos Vathi Greece

In Samos Town you’ll find cute shops, boutiques, trinkets and loads of things to buy as souvenirs and to furnish your home.

37. Visit Kokkari

Samos for your holiday

There are some really nice shops in Kokkari. I could’ve spent a lot of money if I had it. Really lovely jewellery, clothes and art work all over. You’ll also find souvenir shops, body care and fun things for the beach too.

38. Day in Karlovasi

things to do in samos

One of the best things to do in Samos if you’re into shopping, is to visit Karlovasi. There are some nice churches, homey shops, and a nice square to get your lunch. In 2020 the Aegean Sea earthquake shook here, so I don’t think this building looks like this anymore – just to warn you.

Night time entertainment in Samos

Samos isn’t like some of the other islands of Greece with all night music, main strips and clubs. It’s got a certain class to it. Apart from dinner and drinks, there isn’t that much otherwise to do in the evenings. I think you make your own fun here.

evening in samos

39. Boa Vista Cocktail Club

We did go to the Boa Vista Cocktail Club one night, for one. It’s a really cool Tiki bar that looks out over Kokkari Bay. Mum tried her first Margarita and definitely wasn’t into that salty rim. Cocktails are around €10 each which is pretty average for the island, and at least they were made fresh with the finest ingredients here.

40. Watch a film at Cine Rex

Cine Rex is an outdoor cinema showing a mix of recent and not so recent films. Check out that link to see what’s on while you’re in Samos to plan your trip.

41.  Sailing Bar, Kokkari

I really liked Sailing Bar in Kokkari in the evenings, to watch the sunset from. TBH in the week I was there in September I didn’t reallly see a spectacular sunset, just a nice tinge to the sky. Hopefully it’ll be better for you.

How much is Samos?

Island of Samos in Greece map art on white background

Samos is not cheap. You can expect to spend about £3-400 on the flight, and a minimum of £300 a week on accommodation. The average dinner is about €10 with a €3 drink on top. Wine is good value here and if you go into the Bio shop in Kokkari you can get it out of a vending machine.

I spent £870 on my week in Samos in 2019.

  • Flight + baggage = £360
  • Spends in cash on meals, drinks and activities = £330
  • Accommodation = £180 on a one bed airbnb in Kokkari

Getting to Samos

flying into samos

  • 2019 : I travelled with Enter Air, which I wouldn’t recommend as they go via Lemnos (and don’t tell you) so you have an extra stop and it takes longer.
  • 2018 : The first year I went to Samos I flew with Aegean Airlines through Athens – I wouldn’t recommend this either as I had to wait overnight in Athens Airport. Not fun.
  • 2021: I have the once a week flight booked with TUI, for £361. It’s currently showing as £157, which I’m trying very hard to ignore!
  • You could also get a cheap flight to Athens or Mykonos, and then take the ferry from there to Samos.

Hi, I'm Vicky! I wrote this. You can find me on all the social media @VickyFlipFlop. I love a bit of adventure, will try anything once, and have a strong passion for the local food and drink, whatever it may be. I'm here to help inspire you to travel to places a little out of your comfort zone, or at least to explore the usual destinations in a different way. Stay, have a look around, and if you have any questions – let me know below.

Hi Vicky, I’ve been to Samos twice and stayed in Kokkari: short breaks. Nice article and very helpful 👍🏼. Primavera has closed indeed: nowadays there’s Lefteris Corner, a Greek grill restaurant. Very popular among local people which I consider as the best rating one can get.

Just wanted to send you a big thank you for your excellent blog. I’ve found it so useful while staying here in Pythagorian. I’ve had a solo trip here and your recommendations have been most useful. I plan to visit again in the future to visit Kokkari ☺️

Thanks for your message Jacqueline. So glad to hear I helped! My parents and brother and his family are all over there right now – you may have walked past them in the harbour! Pythagorian is wonderful. And yes, go back and visit Kokkari – it’s great there too!

I love Samos ,and I loved reading this ,perfect mate ,good job !

Wow! Hope to try one of these and thank you for sharing.

No worries. Hope you have a great time in Samos!

Love that Mediterranean style living! Just everything about it! Even just the beaches, weather and food would be enough – but there’s also so much fascinating culture and history to absorb and learn about to! I can just imagine strolling through Kokkari and Old Vathi after a lovely seafood lunch now! 😀

Yeah it’s a really beautiful island, and has some great little towns and areas to explore. The boat trip is definitely worth doing!

Journey of Exploration

SAMOS TRAVEL GUIDE

Samos Travel Guide

Samos is a greek island in the Eastern Aegean , very close to the Turkish Coast. It is a popular summer tourist destination with a rich history and stunning coastline.

This guide will tell and also show you with photos everything you need to know about planning your trip to Samos, the best places to visit and things to do and also provide detailed maps and itinerary .

INTRODUCTION TO SAMOS

Why shall you visit Samos?

Samos is one of the greenest islands of the Aegean with stunning beaches and beautiful mountainous and coastal scenery.

An ideal destination for a relaxed holiday in the sun , but also for people looking for something more adventurous or cultural, as it combines beach activities with hiking opportunities, archaeological sights (such as the remains of the large Temple of Hera & the Tunnel of Eupalinos) with picturesque seaside villages , like Kokkari and Pythagorio.

Samos has been famous since antiquity as a centre of culture and trade and also as a naval power during the 6th century BC. Many famous people were born on the island, like the philosopher & mathematician Pythagoras , the astronomer Aristarchus and the philosopher Epicurus . It’s also the mythical birthplace of the goddess Hera.

The capital and main port of Samos is Vathy (or Samos town) and the second port is Karlovasi .

Kokkari Harbour, Samos

BEST TIME TO VISIT SAMOS

The tourist season starts from May to October.

For a beach holiday , the best time to visit the island of Samos is between June and mid-September . It’s dry, sunny and hot, although in September there is a chance of a shower. Also, most of the tourist amenities will only be open during these months.

However, I would avoid the very high season: mid-July to late August , especially the first 3 weeks of August, as the island tends to get very crowded with most Greeks taking their holidays then and prices tend to be higher. Weather can also get very hot, with temperatures over 30°C.

May can be a bit cold to swim in the sea and sunbathe, but it is usually dry and sunny. October is still sunny but with considerably more clouds and potential rain.

Off-season there are fewer ferries and flights and some shops, hotels, and restaurants, especially in the tourist resorts close in October and do not open until May.

For me, the best time to visit will be mid-June or early September with more acceptable temperatures, fewer crowds and lower prices but still possible to swim in the sea.

HOW LONG TO STAY IN SAMOS

Samos is a big island (about 480sqkm), so I would recommend staying on the island at least for a full week if you would like to explore it at a more relaxed pace.

We only stayed there for 5 days, so exploring the island was quite hectic with long drives. Travelling from one side to another can be tiring.

WHERE TO STAY IN SAMOS

The most popular places to stay in Samos are Pythagorio, Kokkari & Kampos Marathokampou (3 main tourist resorts on the island) and to a less extent Ireo and the towns of Vathy and Karlovasi.

There are also other less popular places to stay in various parts of the island like Mpalos, Limnionas, Posidonio & Kerveli.

I will avoid Vathy at the moment since the refugee camp has been placed at the top of the hill by the port and many Greeks avoid staying there. As a result, the town is not as popular anymore as a tourist destination; however, you can find some good deals.

For me, Pythagorio or Kokkari are the best places to stay with a lot of tourist amenities and both are well located to explore the rest of the island.

My recommendation is to stay in Kokkari as it’s a picturesque seaside village with a beautiful beach, a nice little harbour and lots of bars and restaurants. There are a lot of hotels and rooms to rent by the beach at affordable prices. It’s also the best base to explore the island.

Kokkari beach, Samos

Best hotels in Kokkari

  • Lemos Hotel : Very central hotel between the beach and the harbour of Kokkari with nice views from the balconies.
  • Kalidon Hotel : Small but nice central hotel in Kokkari. Good value for money
  • Sunrise Beach : Beautiful hotel situated to the east of the harbour overlooking a smaller bay. 5min walk into town
  • Kalidon Panorama Hotel : For something more luxurious, situated outside of Kokkari with beautiful views and a pool

My second choice will be Pythagorio , another picturesque seaside village with lots of cafes and restaurants. It’s also very close to the airport. The only disadvantage is that the main beach (Pythagorio beach) is about 15min walking distance.

Best hotels in Pythagorio

  • Samaina Hotel : Small but nice central hotel in Pythagorio with nice views of the port from the balconies
  • Lithos Hotel : In the outskirts of the town with nice views towards Pythagorio. 5min walk from the port.
  • Kouros Seasight Hotel : More expensive choice by Pythagorio Beach and next to the airport with a 20min walk into town
  • Naftilos : Best value for a more luxurious hotel with a pool and nice views overlooking the coast. 2 miles away from town and the beach.
  • Hotel Glicorisa Beach : Built on a hill overlooking Glykorisa Beach. With a pool and good restaurant but 2 miles away from town
  • Sunrise Hotel : Located in nearby Ireo. Good value for money and a good base close to Pythagorio

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Entry requirements/visa.

No visas are required for visits up to 90 days for most nationalities.

Opening hours

Shops : 9am –2.30pm Monday, Wednesday and Saturday; 9am–2pm and 5.30pm–9pm Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. In tourist locations, some shops stay open all day from 9am to 10pm.

Banks : 8.30am–2.30pm Monday to Thursday, 8am–2pm Friday

Restaurants : 11am–11pm

Cafes : 10am–midnight

Samos is a safe place and you shouldn’t come across any issues during your stay. However, it’s worth being vigilant in crowded places and tourist areas for any pickpockets or scammers; particularly in Vathy due to the nearby refugee camp.

Travel Insurance

It’s always recommended to get travel insurance before you travel even if a destination like Samos shouldn’t pose any safety concerns. You never know what might happen; better to be fully covered in case of an accident or flight delays etc.

SafetyWing is a great choice for long-term travellers and digital nomads. Alternatively, you can use one of the price comparison websites for cheaper quotes.

The climate is Mediterranean , with mild, rainy winters and hot, sunny summers.

Summer (June to Sept) : Dry, sunny and hot. It can be windy at times, especially on the north coast of the island. Average temperatures are between 20 to 33 degrees.

Autumn (mid-September to November) : It starts to get cloudier, colder and also rainier as the days progress. Average temperatures are between 15 to 23 degrees.

Winter (December to mid-March) : It can get quite cold and windy and also rainy but very rarely snows, only on Mount Kerkis. Average temperatures are between 7 to 13 degrees.

Spring (mid-March to May) : It starts getting warmer and sunnier with average temperatures between 11 to 20 degrees.

You can check historical weather data here .

Greek , but most people in tourist areas speak english and some people speak french, german or italian. In restaurants it’s not unusual to find the menu in 5 different languages: greek, english, french, german and swedish.

The currency is the euro. It’s worth having some cash with you as a lot of small shops and cafes or restaurants won’t accept cards. The best place to exchange some money is through an ATM that can be found in most villages. More tips about exchanging money can be found here .

Samos isn’t an expensive island, but prices are higher during July and August, especially for accommodation. An average twin room will cost 50 to 100 euros per night and a meal at a restaurant around 50 euros for 2 people.

The power plugs and sockets are of type C and F (with two round pins). The voltage is 230 V and the frequency is 50 Hz.

2 round pin plug

Packing List

If you visit in the summertime like most tourists, you won’t need to pack very much, mainly summer clothes & shoes, a hat, sunglasses, flip flops, the essential sunscreen and a swimming suit. However, I will recommend having a light summer jacket , as it can be quite chilly at night, especially in September and May when the wind blows.

For more information on travel gear and what to pack click here .

Internet/Mobile Phone

If not part of the EU, you can buy a SIM card in one of the shops of either Wind , Vodafone or Comsmote (the three main greek mobile providers). Cosmote & Vodafone have the best coverage.

Be aware that if you are on the east coast of the island close to Turkey (e.g. Livadaki, Kerveli, Posidonio), roaming charges may apply as your network might connect to a turkish one. Better to check the network before you connect to the internet or make a call if you are there. This unfortunately happened to me during my stay.

HOW TO GET THERE

Samos International Airport is connected to Athens and Thessaloniki all year round and also to some other greek islands during summer. There are flights from Athens (55min) with Olympic Air or Sky Express, and from Thessaloniki (65min) . During summer, the airport receives charter flights from many European countries.

If you are travelling from Athens, taking a flight can be a bit more expensive than taking the ferry, especially in high season. However, it is much more convenient and definitely recommended if you have limited time in Greece.

For the best website to book your flights, check the link below. Always check prices in advance for the best deals.

Getting from/to the airport

The airport is located about 4km away from Pythagorio. Upon your arrival, you can rent a car (highly recommended) in one of the rental offices at the airport. The airport is the best place to book if you haven’t done it before you arrive.

There is a metered taxi service outside the terminal building. The journey to Vathy is about 20 to 30min and costs €30 euros, while the trip to Pythagorio is only 5min and costs €10 . A taxi ride to Kokkari costs around €45 and €50 to Kampos Marathokampou .

There is also a limited bus service during the day (until 17.00) but only from Monday to Saturday. More information about the bus service can be found here .

It is also worth checking with your hotel as most of them offer airport transfers at an extra charge.

There are ferries from the port of Piraeus in Athens, usually 4 times per week during high season. It’s a 9 to 11-hour long trip usually arriving in Samos in the early hours of the morning (2-4 am). It can be very tiring if you don’t have any cabins booked, which can be expensive, so it’s better avoided if you have limited time in Greece. If you still want to go by ferry without a cabin, it’s advisable to book in advance an airplane-type seat , especially in high season. The ferry from Piraeus usually stops at both ports of Karlovasi and Vathy, but it’s better to check beforehand. The price is usually around €90 return without a cabin.

Samos is also connected with some other islands, including Syros, Mykonos, Paros, Ikaria, Fourni, Chios, Lesvos and Dodecanese islands.

There are also frequent ferry services from Kusadasi to Vathy , so you can easily visit the island from Turkey or go for a day trip . Ferries depart daily at 9:30 AM and 6:30 PM in high season. The trip takes one hour and costs €35 one-way .

For the cheapest site to book your ferry ticket in Greece, check the link below.

Tsabou Beach at sunset, Samos

HOW TO GET AROUND

I would definitely recommend hiring a car if you would like to explore the island .

I always try and rent a car whenever I travel as it just gives you the freedom to plan your trip as you like it and stop wherever you like, as I usually do with too many photo stops along the way.

Car rental for a day is usually 40 euros in high season. Better to book in advance before your travel for the best deals. Also at high season, there might be low availability and the prices can be much higher if you leave it until you arrive. Check the link below to book and compare car rental prices.

There are car rental offices at the airport and ferry ports of the island.

A cheaper alternative to the car is renting a scooter or motorbike if you are comfortable with it, but you need to be more cautious on the road.

Quadbikes can be limited and they are not much cheaper than renting a car, but they can be quite fun.

There are taxi stands in most towns but taxis can be a bit expensive if you plan to go further distances.

Indicative fares of taxi routes :

  • Kokkari to Vathi: €15
  • Kokkari to Pythagorio: €30
  • Kokkari to Karlovasi: €30
  • Kokkari to Kampos Marathokampou: €50

Although public transport is cheap , bus services are not that frequent and can be unreliable . It only connects the main resorts and villages with usually no services at weekends. Therefore, it is not really recommended if you want to explore the island. For more information visit the KTEL Samos on Facebook .

SAMOS EXCURSIONS & TOURS

Boat trip to samiopoula island.

Samiopoula is a little island in the south of Samos with a very beautiful beach with fine sand and clear waters. There are full-day daily excursions from Pythagorio in high season that usually include food within the price; the journey takes about 1 hour . You can see the boat advertising the tour at the harbour of Pythagorio and usually you can book it the day before.

Ferry trip to Kusadasi

If you have plenty of time on the island, you can take the ferry to Kusadasi (1h) in neighbouring Turkey and enjoy this beautiful coastal resort. You can also combine it with an added tour of Ephesus . Be prepared for long queues at the customs entering Greece and Turkey.

Trip to Ikaria or Fournoi

Difficult to be done as a day trip, but it’s worth visiting the other two islands for a longer stay . This will need to be planned carefully according to the ferry connections as there are no daily ferries.

15 Best Things to Do in Samos (Greece)

In antiquity some big hitters lived on the island of Samos, like the philosopher Epicurus, the astronomer Aristarchus and, most famous of all, the mathematician Pythagoras.

You may remember him from the Pythagorean theorem in your school days, and on Samos you can journey to the caves where he is believed to have lived and taught during a self-imposed exile in the 6th century BC. The island is almost touching distance from Turkey, on the other side of the Micale Strait, while its coast is dimpled with coves and natural harbours like the idyllic Kokkari.

As well as being the island of Pythagoras, Samos is also synonymous with a sweet Muscat wine made from grapes grown on high mountain terraces.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Samos :

1. Heraion of Samos

Heraion of Samos

This temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with Pythagoreion, the ruins of the ancient town of Samos.

Begun in the late-Archaic Period in the 6th century BC, but with much older roots, this massive Ionic temple to Hera was the first of Ancient Greece’s large free-standing temples.

It was the third to be built at this location, and was never actually completed, with construction continuing into the Roman Period.

In Byzantine times the temple, obsolete as a pagan place of worship, was gradually dismantled and quarried for its marble.

Only one of 115 original columns is still standing, but you can see their torus-shaped bases in the ground.

Also here and there are architectural elements like the ionic capitals, stones from the cornice and a set of headless votive statues, all labelled with informative signs.

2. Tunnel of Eupalinos

Tunnel of Eupalinos

The ancient engineer Eupalinos was the brains behind this tunnel up the slope of Mount Kastro from Pythagoreio.

Built in the 6th century BC the tunnel was the first in the world to be excavated from both ends using mathematical calculations.

It was built as an aqueduct to convey water through Mount Kastro to Ancient Pythagoreion, so the city could survive in times of siege.

The aqueduct functioned for a whole millennium, and is staggering, both in terms its length (more than 1 kilometre) and when you think about the calculations that made it possible.

When you come you’ll be given hardhats and can choose between a basic (20 mins) and longer visit (1 hour). Whichever you pick, come early as things do heat up in the tunnel.

Kokkari

The fishing village of Kokkari is almost too pretty for words.

The harbour here sees less fishing traffic now, but still has little wooden boats anchored in the water.

Today it is encircled by tavernas and cafes that have terraces filling the narrow quaysides.

From your table you can survey the harbour, which is screened by a mole that pushes out east from a picturesque headland, topped with pines and with houses and clinging to its base.

At the restaurants the water will almost be lapping at your feet as you dine, and people bathe on the narrow pebble beach.

Beyond the two headlands framing the harbour are yet more pebble beaches, to give you everything you could want from one pocket-sized coastal village.

4. Panagia Spiliani Church

Panagia Spiliani Church

Surrounded by cypress trees and looking out towards Anatolia at a height of 125 metres on Mount Kastro is a monastery with a cave church.

The cave is deceptively long, running 100 metres into the mountainside and has been venerated for millennia.

One theory suggests that this is also where Pythagoras hid from the Tyrant of Samos, Polycrates in the 6th century BC (as opposed to the Cave of Pythagoras which we’ll talk about below). Here you’ll see the sanctuary where the marble icon of the Virgin is kept, and just outside is a spring with sanctified water that fishermen would drink from before setting off on voyages.

5. Potami Waterfalls

Potami Waterfalls

Near Karlovasi is a waterfall that feeds a long, narrow gorge with high walls.

To get to the base of the first waterfall you have to wade through the pools on riverbed, and to do this you’ll need sports shoes or even swim shoes as you’ll spend a lot of the time in the water.

Now, if you’re in good shape and know a thing or two about climbing, you can scale the waterfall with the help of a rope.

If not, you can inch up a rickety wooden stairway to be greeted by an isolated taverna.

From there you can take a trail to rejoin the river at a higher point and with a little effort you’ll come to another waterfall five metres high and with a glimmering pool at its base.

6. Metamorphosis Church

Metamorphosis Church, Samos

On the stiff woodland trail by the gorge on the way to the Potami Waterfalls you’ll come to the oldest Byzantine church on the island.

The Metamorphosis Church is from the 1000s, with a cruciform plan and dome, and combining Byzantine and Genoese architecture.

The most exciting element here is the set of marble columns holding up the dome, which have probably been repurposed from an ancient monument.

From the chapel you can battle up the hill to inspect the ruins of a Venetian castle.

In coniferous woodland, with beautiful vistas are remnants of gateways, towers and curtain walls.

7. Tsamadou Beach

Tsamadou Beach

Moments west of Kokkari is an exquisite pebble beach down a crumbling track from the main coastal road.

Tsamadou is the only official nudist beach on Samos, and this applies to the eastern end under the cliffs.

On the remainder of the bay are three beach bars with long rows of sun loungers.

These are recommended as the fine pebble surface might be a bit uncomfortable to lie on.

Fortunately the bar on the western end has sun loungers included in the price of a drink.

The sea is everything people hope from a Greek Island, as clear as an aquarium and on a light slope.

8. Pythagoreio Archaeological Museum

Pythagoreio Archaeological Museum

After exploring the Heraion you can get a more rounded idea of Ancient Samos at the newly constructed museum in the modern city.

There are finds here from a Neolithic settlement atop the Kastro Mountain and the Geometric necropolis of Samos (900 BC to 700 BC). One piece sure to hold your attention is the marble statue of Aiakes (540 BC), who was the father of the Tyrant Polycrates, the dictator that Pythagoras disagreed with.

There’s also an imposing marble sarcophagus from roughly the same period, crafted like a temple.

The museum is arranged chronically and in the Roman and Byzantine galleries there’s a larger than life-sized statue of Trajan on horseback, busts of Claudius and Augustus and a stash of 300 Byzantine coins from 600 AD.

9. Livadaki Beach

Livadaki Beach

Only ten kilometres from Samos Town, Livadaki will seem further because you have to drive a coastal road that hugs the craggy coastline.

Your destination is a beach in the island’s far northeast, managed by a bar and laid with a grid of sun loungers up to eight-deep.

None of that should put you off because the beach is fabulous, and there’s isn’t a single building to be seen on the green slopes around this narrow cove.

The sea is so shallow that you have to wade out 50 metres before you can even swim, and you can borrow a paddleboard from the bar for no extra charge.

10. Archaeological Museum of Vathy

Archaeological Museum of Vathy

If you still have an appetite for ancient Samian culture there’s another repository of artefacts in Vathy.

In amongst the carved ivory and clay figurines there’s some outstanding sculpture from the Archaic Period, the time of Pythagoras and the Heraion.

One thing you can’t avoid is the colossal Ionic kouros (figure of a naked youth), measuring 5.5 metres and dating to the beginning of the 6th century BC. From the same century is the Geneleos group, which are more of the votive statues you can see at the Heraion, made up of five female and one male statue.

Some of the compelling bronze items here include a breast plate from a horse, showing Heracles fighting the three-headed dog of Hades, and a bronze statuette of a horseman.

11. Mount Kerkis

Mount Kerkis, Samos

Samos’ rocky hinterland has 45 signposted hiking routes, but if there’s one natural sight that captures everyone’s imagination it’s the 1,433-metre Mount Kerkis, unavoidable on the western half of the island.

This peak is an extinct volcano and is the second-highest landform in the Aegean.

Mount Kerkis is laced with caves and gorges, and on your hike you’ll be greeted by small chapels and monasteries (Megali Panagia, Moni Evangelistrias Marathokambos). The good news is that that the trail has a lot of cover from the pines on the lower slopes, and you’ll have mountain goats for company with bells ringing on their necks.

Less fun are the big fields of scree near the top, which will test even the most seasoned hikers.

A round trip may take more than half a day, so it pays to be prepared.

12. Cave of Pythagoras

Cave of Pythagoras

At one of the trailheads for an ascent of Mount Kerkis is the possible location of the cave where Pythagoras, the ancient philosopher and mathematician hid from Polycrates in the 6th century BC. There are actually two caves, the larger of which is up the main steps and was used as a classroom and source of drinking water.

At the entrance to this cave is the small white Panagia Sarantaskaliotissa chapel.

The trickier of the two caves to access is Pythagoras’ dwelling, at the end of a tough trail marked by red signs and with a fig tree not far from the entrance.

For both caves the real purpose of a visit is to be able to tell people you’ve been there, and for the spectacular seascapes.

13. Lemonakia Beach

Lemonakia Beach

Next door to Tsamadou is the captivating Lemonakia Beach, which is slightly smaller but matches its neighbour for natural beauty.

Down a 100-metre stairway, Lemonakia feels a lot busier than Tsamadou, maybe because there’s less room.

With a surface of pebbles, the beach is filled with sun loungers and these are a necessity for comfort.

A pair of loungers and a parasol will cost €6 for day.

Don’t forget to bring flip flops or sandals, as the pebbles can be painful underfoot.

Where Lemonakia really shines is in its blue-green water, which is more sheltered than Tsamadou and as clear as can be.

14. Psili Ammos Beach

Psili Ammos Beach, Samos

Far from the other beaches on this list, Psili Ammos is on the Mycale Strait facing Turkey’s Dilek Peninsula, which is only 1,200 metres way.

The name “Psili Ammos” literally means “fine sand”, and that’s exactly what you get here.

So the beach already has an advantage over some others on Samos.

You won’t need swim shoes to enter the water, and looking at the sandy seabed you’ll spot little fish around your feet in the rippling, crystalline sea.

As ever, Psili Ammos is an organised beach and sun loungers cost €6, a small price to pay for the green setting.

15. Samian Wine

Samos Vineyard

In wine circles, Samos is a byword for sweet Muscat wine, and the best conditions for growing these grapes is on the northern slopes, where vineyards are on tight terraces etched into the mountainsides at 600 to 1,000 metres.

At this elevation the “meltemia” north wind has a tempering effect on the scorching summer sun.

But the wind can also be vicious, and for this reasons vintners prune their fines to glow close to the soil.

About 95% of all the wine produced on Samos is Muscat and if you want to see firsthand how it’s made and sample a few varieties, the Vakakis Winey in Karlovasi is the place for you.

If Muscat isn’t up your street, Vakakis also does a couple of red and whites.

samos road trip

Heraion, or else the Temple of Hera, was built c. 570-560 BC on top of previous smaller temples also dedicated to Hera. It was a huge temple with dimensions of 52,5×105 meters and 155 pillars, 18 meters high.

Herodotus, the ancient Greek historian, mentions that the Heraion of Samos was the largest temple in Greece . Today, only one pillar is still standing. According to the myth, the location for Heraion was chosen as Hera was born in that spot (under a wicker tree, the sacred tree of Heraion) and it was there that she married Zeus.

Heraion and the ancient city of Samos (Pythagorion) were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992. Visiting the site is surely one of the best things to do in Samos Greece.

Note that it can be windy here too, which makes Kokkari a very popular surfing destination.

Things to Do in Samos Greece, the Deja Blue Maisonette

Kokkari is a fantastic place to make a base for your Samos vacations. Deja Blue Maisonette ll is a beautifully decorated house in a fantastic location, highly recommended!

6. Explore the Traditional Villages

Samos Greece has more than 30 traditional villages, a good number of them on the mountains, and the rest spread along Samos’ beautiful coastline.

Things to Do in Samos Greece, Ambelos village from a drone

Ambelos is located among abundant vineyards and greenery and if you take the 1.5 km path that starts from here and crosses the chestnut forest, you will end up at a beautiful waterfall.

Things to Do in Samos Greece, Manolates village

Manolates has a paved square surrounded by small taverns and houses with colorful windows. You will love the pottery workshops and jewelry shops whose products are proudly displayed by the locals.

You will find resting points, cafes, and taverns in all villages no matter how small they are. I prefer those villages for my meals as they are quieter and more traditional looking than the coastal ones which are more tourist-developed.

7. Psili Ammos Beach

samos road trip

This is an ideal beach for families with small children as it has calm, shallow waters. It offers nature lovers some of the best things to do in Samos Greece!

As it is surrounded by high pine trees that reach the edge of the coast you get to have shade, which you will highly appreciate during summer. The beach is also easily accessible and has many amenities, such as tavernas, sunbeds, and umbrellas.

From Psili Ammos beach, you can see the opposite coast of Asia Minor, since it is the closest point of Samos to Turkey !

8. Tunnel of Eupalinos (Top Site to Visit in Samos)

Things to Do in Samos Greece, Tunnel of Eupalinos

The Tunnel of Eupalinos – with an opening of 1.80×1.80 meters and is 1,036-metre-long- is very close to Pythagorion town. It is the middle section of the aqueduct built circa 550 BCE. The stunning tunnel was designed by the great architect and engineer Eupalinus for the ancient city of Samos, commissioned by the tyrant Polycrates.

Things to Do in Samos Greece, Tunnel of Eupalinos with visitors

This was a two-way tunnel, dug for 10 years simultaneously from both sides of the mountain, with remarkable precision, which was a significant achievement by the technological standards of the time. Since 1992 it has been classified by Unesco as a World Heritage Site .

Tips for visiting the Tunnel of Eupalinos

  • Children younger than 14 years old are not allowed inside the tunnel .
  • There are 3 routes to choose and you need to have booked your visit in advance, call here at +30 22730 62 813 or email at [email protected].
  • In places the rocky floor is slippery and there is water dripping from the ceiling. For that reason, you will be given a disposal head cover and a helmet for your protection.
  • You must also wear closed anti-slippery shoes .
  • The average temperature will be around 16 C, so you better have a light jacket with you.
  • The authorities of the tunnel strongly advise the following groups not to enter the tunnel: overweight, claustrophobic, with cardiac or respiratory issues, any mobility issues even small ones. If you do wish to go in, you will do so with your responsibility .
  • You are not allowed to carry big bags with you and at route 3 you are not allowed to carry any bag at all.
  • Entrance is €8 to €10, depending on the route you will follow.

9. Mikro and Megalo Seitani Beaches

Things to Do in Samos Greece, Mikro Seitani beach

The Natura 2000 protected area around the beaches of Mikro, and Megalo Seitani, makes them two of the most picturesque beaches in Greece . Quite possibly Mikro Seitani is one of the prettiest beaches on Samos island.

It has high cliffs, crystal clear blue waters, and small caves where the water enters, giving you a sense of total isolation.

Things to Do in Samos Greece, Megalo Seitani beach

In Megalo Seitani – apart from the magical beach – you will be impressed by the view of the Kakoperato Gorge , a very exciting hiking trail.

Neither beach has organized facilities and you will have to follow a 3km picturesque, yet slightly challenging at places hiking trail. You can start from Potami Beach to get there, so make sure you have good walking shoes, salty snacks, 2 liters of water, sunscreen, and a hat with you.

Alternatively, you can go there by renting a boat.

10. Monastery of Panagia Spiliani

Things to Do in Samos Greece Holy Monastery of Panagia Spiliani

The Holy Monastery of Panagia Spiliani is one of the most famous places to visit in Samos Greece. It is located on the hill above Pythagorio, near the exit of the Eupalinos tunnel and the ancient theatre.

The monastery is built inside a cave and is dedicated to the Holy Mother. The specific cave has been used as a place of worship since ancient times. Experts even claim that Pythagoras had a philosophical school at the place where the monastery is built today.

As it is built at 120 meters high, you will also enjoy a wonderful view of Pythagorion and the sea. Free entrance.

11. Hiking Samos

Things to Do in Samos Greece mountainous landscape with yellow flowers

Hiking enthusiasts will find in Samos 32 marked hiking trails of about 240 km for all levels of hiking. This is the longest trail in Greece crisscrossing the island, connecting villages, leading to deserted beaches, high peaks, gorges, streams, dense forests, chapels, and ruins of antiquity.

The highest mountain is Mount   Kerkis or Kerketeas with a peak at 1400 meters.

A detailed description of the Samos Trails can be found here .

12. Livadaki Beach

Things to Do in Samos Greece Livadaki beach from a drone

Livadaki Beach is one of the most picturesque and exotic beaches in Samos, resembling a fjord. It is fully organized in a small bay with shallow, turquoise, warm waters, ideal for children. Restrooms and showers are available for your convenience, and there is no pressure to purchase anything while using the complimentary sunbeds.

How to get there? follow the north-coast road out of Vathy for 10km and you will see the road signs. There is free parking right at the beach.

13. Waterfalls of Potami

Things to Do in Samos Greece, old Byzantine church

On your way to the waterfalls of Potami, you will find the oldest church of Samos . The church is dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Savior and is the most important and best-preserved Byzantine monument of Samos, built in the 11th century CE.

The four marble columns supporting the dome and their Corinthian capitals must come from ancient/early Christian monuments of the region.

Things to Do in Samos Greece, Potami Waterfalls

The hiking trail (around 800 meters long) to the Potami waterfalls is very picturesque inside a forest with small wooden bridges and quite easy to walk.

There are two ways to get to the waterfalls: you can go there by swimming or you can climb (carefully!) a wooden ladder with 170 steps.

If you go with the ladder choice on top you will get to the magnificent stone-built restaurant Archodissa, inside the forested area. From Archodissa you will enjoy a lovely view of the gorge to Potami beach.

14. Pythagoras Cave

Things to Do in Samos Greece, Pythagoras cave with a church

Pythagoras Cave is located at Mount Kerketeas. To reach the actual cave you need to climb quite a few steps (around 340) carved on the rock. This might be tiring if you are walking on a hot day but you can take it slowly. The mountain views are also very rewarding.

Things to Do in Samos Greece,

According to some sources, this is where the philosopher Pythagoras fled to hide when he was being persecuted by the tyrant Polycrates. The entrance is free and the main part of the cave is right behind the tiny white chapel.

15. Potami Beach

Things to Do in Samos Greece, POtsami beach

One of the most popular and beautiful pebbly beaches of Samos is Potami, surrounded by trees with crystal clear waters. With the picturesque little church of Agios Nikolaos right above it, it is also one of the most photogenic beaches of Samos, with a magical view, especially at sunset.

It is partially organized with a beach bar and easy road access, 4.5 km from Karlovasi.

16. Karlovasi

Things to Do in Samos Greece, Karlovassi port with colorful houses and yachts

Karlovasi is the third port of Samos Greece. It is quite a picturesque village with colorful houses, cafes, and taverns along the seafront, great if you are waiting for your ship. The village is quite lively, especially if you go in the evenings to the central square where everyone is strolling or enjoying a drink.

In Karlovasi you can visit the only tannery museum in Greece housed in an old tannery stone building, with free entrance for visitors. You will have the chance to see the tools, machinery, and methods of leather processing, as well as rich photographic historical material.

17. Wine Tasting

Things to Do in Samos Greece, Wine Museum with huge barrels

Samos has been making fine wine since ancient times. However, since the 16th century, when the grape variety Muscat Blanc a Petits Grains or “Moschato” was imported, Samos became world famous for its wines.

A lovely winery for wine tasting that also serves as a cultural center is Vakakis Winery in Megali Lakka. You can contact them to book a visit and taste their wonderful aromatic wines.

samos road trip

If you are a wine lover then you should also visit the Samos Wine Museum in Vathy, which features traditional wine production equipment, photos, and lots of information. The entrance fee is 5€ Including wine tasting. You need to send them a form in advance when you would like to visit here.

Finally for the best view while sipping fine wine you should go to Meteoro Winebar Restaurant Samos in Koumaradei near Puthagorio.

The boats depart from Pythagorio and Marathokampos Bay in the morning and return to Samos at about 16:00.

Where to Stay in Samos

Things to Do in Samos Greece, Nafsika villas sunrise

The  most popular places to stay  in Samos are  Pythagorio, Kokkari,  and  Marathokampo s. There are other places not as popular like Kerveli if you are looking for more quiet areas. They are all coastal areas with great beaches and are touristically advanced.

My best choices for Samos Hotels are:

Nafsika Villas : Surrounded by beautiful greenery and the sea, Nafsika Villas are located on the hillside of Kerveli in Samos. It offers a private beach, garden, and self-catering accommodation with a balcony overlooking the Aegean Sea.

How to get to samos.

Things to Do in Samos Greece, Marathokampos village wigth a tavern and fishing boats

Samos is the Greek island closest to Turkey separated by the narrow Mykale strait, located south of Chios and north of Patmos. You can get to Samos either by plane or by ferry.

Samos Greece International Airport

You can fly to Samos from Athens, Thessaloniki, Limnos, Lesvos, Chios, and Rhodes Islands throughout the year. Additionally, during summer, there are charter flights to Samos from various European countries.

Samos Ferries

Samos has three ports (Vathy, Pythagorion, Karlovasi) and two marinas. Most of the ferries from the Athens port of Piraeus depart for Karlovassi in Samos, while there are also some weekly sailings to the port of Vathi. The trip lasts around 9-12 hours, depending on the vessel and the port.

Getting Around Samos

Things to Do in Samos Greece, a road

Samos is a  big island so I would recommend staying for at least a full week if you would like to explore it at a more relaxed pace. Driving from one side to the other can be quite tiring, especially during summer if you want to see everything quickly.

The best way to explore the island is by renting a car . If you don’t like driving, there are public buses that you can get from any of the ports that go to the most significant areas of Samos. Taxis and private transfers are also available choices.

Best Time to Visit Samos Greece

The islands of the northern Aegean have a smaller season than the Cyclades .

Generally speaking, Samos Island is at its liveliest between June and September. During its peak season, from July to August, it can get busy, especially with Europeans and Greeks. The seawater, which you may find cooler if you have been previously in Crete , is at its warmest in August and September.

You can check historical weather data for Greece here .

What is the Most Visited Place in Samos?

It is Pythagorion village because it combines so many UNESCO monuments (Heraion, Eupalides Tunnel, Pythagoras cave, Ancient Theater) with a traditional seaside village with all kinds of great facilities.

What is a Big Attraction in Samos?

I was impressed by the Eupalides Tunnel, it is an amazing – yet claustrophobic – experience. I also loved the Archodissa restaurant on top of the Potami waterfalls. Their dishes are made in a wooden oven and they are delicious!!

How Long Should I Stay in Samos?

Ideally, you’d stay a minimum of 6 to 7 days to make the most of the towns, the beaches, the sites, and its day trips.

Why Should You Visit Samos?

Because you would love to get to know this part of Greece, so different from any other place in the country. There might be no whitewashed houses here yet the island is stunningly beautiful, and affordable , with mouth-watering cuisine and the locals are super hospitable and friendly.

Short History of Samos

Things to Do in Samos Greece, ancient ruins with wildflowers

According to the legend and historical evidence, Samos was first inhabited during the second millennium BC although there are human traces since the Neolithic era. The first residents appear to be Iones who emigrated from Epidaurus and brought the worship of Hera goddess on Samos.

During the classical Greek years, Samos became a significant commercial trade for exporting wine and ceramics and importing fabrics from Asia Minor. This is where the first Greek bronze statues were made. It participated in the Greek city war against the Persians (Famous Greek Battles against the Persians besides Mykale happened in Salamina , Marathon , and Thermopylae).

Samos remained a prosperous and thriving city during the Roman period. A few centuries later, the Byzantine Empire transformed the island with its strong Christian element of which there is a rich heritage to this day.

Samos took place in the Greek War of Independence in April 1821 and in 1835 it declared its autonomy but became part of Greece in November 1912.

Samos 101: The Beginner’s Guide to Samos, Greece

Greece , Greek Islands , Travel Guides

May 24, 2019

comment 1 Comment

By Ryan Gargiulo

Samos is surrounded by the clear blue waters of the Aegean Sea, just 70 km from the coast of Turkey and a short 1 hour ferry ride away from beautiful little islands such as Fourni.

The Greek island of Samos is known for its rich history and more importantly said to have been the birthplace of Pythagoras (born: 570 BC), a mathematician who gave the world the Pythagorean Theorem .

Interestingly enough, Pythagoras wasn’t the only famous figure to have been blessed to be born on the island of Samos.

Did you know that the philosopher known as Epicurus is said to have been born on the island as well?

Epicurus was the founder of Epicureanism , a school of philosophy which states that to be able to achieve a tranquil state free from fear or bodily pain, one must only seek modest pleasures.

Moreover, Greek mythology also points to Samos as the birthplace of Hera, the goddess of marriage and birth and Zeus’ wife.

Aside from its diverse culture and history, Samos is an spectacular destination with everything you can ask for from white sand beaches, to mountains, and even forests.

Getting ready to plan your trip to the beautiful Greek island of Samos?

If so, you’re in the right place. Let’s get started.

Before You Go: Travel Insurance

When planning a trip to Greece and the Greek Islands your first priority should be to make sure you make a small investment towards your health and well being by considering an  affordable travel insurance policy  for your trip.

Not only will this budget friendly travel insurance policy cover you if your bags are lost/stolen and if your flight is delayed/cancelled, but you’ll also be covered for all medical and injury related issues as well.

Let’s face it. No parents, family or friends want to have to cover the cost of you getting medevaced home from Greece.

Unfortunate things do happen. Especially when you least expect it .

Do yourself a favor and consider purchasing travel insurance coverage for your trip so you can rest assured that you’ll be taken care of in the event of a serious emergency in Greece.

P.S. You won’t believe how reasonably priced this travel insurance is.

Getting to Samos

When it comes to getting to Samos, you’ll have two options to choose from; by air or by ferry.

All flights to Samos arrive at the Samos Aristarchos International Airport which is located approximately three miles from the town of Pythagorion.

The Samos Airport is the only airport on the island and it caters to both domestic and international arrivals and departures.

Below, you’ll find a short list of airlines that fly to Samos:

  • Athens to Samos flights – Olympic Air, Sky Express
  • Local flights – Olympic Air, Sky Express, Aegean Airlines, Astra Airlines
  • International flights – Lufthansa, Air Berlin

My recommendation is to always begin by  researching flights using Skyscanner  before looking into taking a ferry to the Greek Islands.

Begin your flight search now using the Skyscanner booking engine below.

Samos Port

There are two Samos ferry ports where most passenger ferries dock — Vathy and Karlovassi.

Samos Ferry Information:

  • Athens to Samos Ferry: 12 to 15 hours
  • Kusadasi to Samos Ferry: 1 hour

If flights from Athens to Samos are too expensive, the next best way to reach the island would be to take a ferry to Samos.

Please note that a ferry from Athens to Samos will take approximately 12-15 hours depending on the ferry company and the speed of the ferry you choose.

You could also consider cutting down on the time you spend getting to Samos by checking flights from Athens to Kusadasi. From there you’ll be able to take the ferry from Kusadasi to Samos which takes approximately one hour.

When it comes to booking Greek ferries to Samos, one of the most reliable and reasonably priced Greek ferry search engines is powered by a company called Ferries in Greece  (highly recommended), a major greek ferry booking hub that helps more than 35,000 passengers get to and from the Greek islands each year.

You can check prices for the ferries from Athens to Samos and Kusadasi to Samos using the ferry booking engine below.

Things to Do in Samos

The Greek island of Samos is rich in natural beauty, culture, and history — in other words, you’ll be hard pressed to run out of things to see and do in Samos.

Below, you’ll find a short list of some of the best things to do in Samos.

Explore Pythagorion

Pythagorion, or Pythagoreio, is a small town on the island that’s mostly known as the birthplace of the mathematician Pythagoras.

If you’re stopping by Pythagorion during your vacation, be sure to visit the following:

  • Tunnel of Eupalinos – 6th-century underground landmark and museum (Must See)
  • Archaeological Museum of Pythagorion
  • The Statue of Pythagoras
  • The Panagia Spiliani Church

Visit the Temple of Hera

As mentioned above, Samos is also known as the birthplace of the goddess Hera.

Understandably, there’s an ancient temple on the island which is dedicated to the goddess of marriage and birth.

The Temple of Hera dates back to the 7th century and you can still see some of its Doric-style columns when you visit this site.

Hike Mt. Kerkis

At 4,700 feet, Mt. Kerkis (also Mt. Kerketeus) is the second highest peak in the eastern region of the Aegean Sea.

In ancient Greek, “Kerketeus” means “belonging to Circe” who is a sorceress and the daughter of the sun god Helos and the ocean nymph Perse.

It takes about 8 hours to reach the peak (Vigla) and to descend again, but the views are well worth it and the experience will surely be one to remember.

Visit the Church of Panagia Sarandaskaliotissa

The church of Panagia Sarandaskaliotissa was built on top of a cave known as Pythagoras’ cave.

The cave was named as such because this is where the famous mathematician escaped to when he was being persecuted by Polycrates, a tyrant who ruled the island from 538 to 522 BC.

Follow the steps located at the entrance of the cave and they will lead you up to this beautiful place of worship.

Cycle from Potami to Karlovassi, Konstantinos and Kokkari

From Potami, you can cycle to Karlovassi, Konstantinos, and Kokkari and catch a glimpse of some interesting sights along the way.

This popular cycling route will take you along the northern coast of Samos and it takes approximately 40-50 minutes to complete if you cycle straight through from start to finish.

That said, we recommend you take your time and make plenty of pitstops along the way to take photos and videos.

Visit the Karlovassi Waterfalls

If exploring the nature of Samos is something you’re interested in, a visit to the Potami Waterfalls in Karlovassi should not be missed.

The water here is clear, cold and refreshing and it’s the perfect place to cool off on a hot summer day.

Visit the Archeological Museum

There are two major archeological museums that can be found on the island of Samos

One is located in Vathy and the other is located in Pythagorion.

Inside the museums, you’ll find relics and artifacts from centuries past, including statues from the classical era that have been salvaged for preservation from their original sites.

Thermal Hot Springs

Aside from the blue waters of the Aegean Sea which surround the island, tourists also love taking a dip in Samos’ thermal springs due to their healing powers and spa-like qualities.

You can find the main spa in Agios Kirykos. Five of the main thermal springs in Samos are located here.

Things to Do in Samos - Windsurfing in Samos

Windsurfing and Kitesurfing

Due to the strong north winds that cross the island, windsurfing and kitesurfing have become very popular activities in Samos.

If you’re interested in these water sports, there are equipment rental services available at several beaches on the island.

You can find a list of the best beaches in Samos below.

Scuba Diving

The Aegean Sea is rich in marine life, which you can witness first hand when scuba diving in Samos.

There are several dive centers located on the island. One of the most popular scuba diving spots is located off the coast of Pythagorion.

Horse riding

Explore the island’s beautiful landscape by horseback and take a ride through the forests of Samos.

This activity will take you to some of the island’s ecotourism spots and hidden historical ruins.

Best Beaches in Samos

  • Gagkou : Gagkou may be a small beach, but it’s beautiful and is conveniently located. It is surrounded by several local taverns and accommodation options. The beach is lined with umbrellas and sunbeds, and the water is shallow, perfect for visiting families with children.
  • Tsamados : Tsamados (also Tsamadou) is a beach tucked in a bay where nudist beachgoers used to go. While it’s not considered a nude beach anymore, you might still find a few of them around, so if this is something you’re uncomfortable with, you might want to avoid Tsamados. Otherwise, this beach is a gorgeous place to spend a day by the sea in, with taverns and bars close by.
  • Lemonakia : A pebble beach with neat rows of blue umbrellas and sunbeds, Lemonakia is a favorite spot among surfers because the north winds that blow through here bring high waves.
  • Votsalakia in Marathocampos : Marathocampos (also Kampos or Marathokampou) is a 1.9-mile long beach on the southwest coast of Samos. It is a popular spot for water sports like surfing and paddleboarding. Votsalkia in Marathocampos is also known for its vibrant nightlife especially during peak season.
  • Chryssi Ammos : A secluded and less developed beach in Marathocampos, Chryssi Ammos is a nature lover’s paradise. Compared to other beaches on this list, it is relatively quiet, which is perfect if you’re looking to avoid crowds.
  • Psili Ammos : A small beach with soft, fine sand, Psili Ammos is a child-friendly beach located on the coast closest to Turkey. It has sunbeds, umbrellas, as well as areas for playing beach games.

Tip: Most of the island’s major cultural festivals happen during August, like the Wine Festival in Vathy and Pythagorion, the Manolis Kalomoiris Festival in Vathy, and the Ireon Music Festival at Ireo Beach.

Samos Transportation

Getting Around Samos

There are four main modes of transportation when it comes to moving around the island of Samos, Greece.

You can rent a scooter, car, or you can take a taxi and/or ride the bus.

Scooters are a convenient way to get around Samos because it gives you the freedom to choose which areas to explore and allows you to reach destinations which are not always accessible by car.

There are public buses on the island, although their routes and schedules are limited and quite unpredictable at times.

If you have limited time on the island, then we suggest you avoid using this mode of transportation.

Taxis will be handy for when you want to get from the airport to your hotel, but if you’re wanting to explore the island during your vacation, you’d be better off renting a car to move around.

There are car rental agencies near the airport and ferry ports on the island. We highly recommend this option if you’re not comfortable with riding a scooter.

Looking for the the most reputable rental car company in Samos? We always recommend to start by checking prices on RentalCars.com .

Best Time to Visit Samos

Samos weather.

The weather in Samos is generally sunny with low precipitation and high humidity throughout the year.

The summer season is from May to August, with late May to mid-June being the best time for water sports.

If you want to avoid the crowds, the best time to visit Samos is the months of April and May or from late August to early September.

Please note that the weather in Samos can get pretty hot in the months of July and August with the average weather reaching 94°F during the day and 77°F in the evenings.

Like many islands in the Aegean Sea, Samos is an idyllic summer destination, but it is so much more than just an ecotourism spot.

If you’re interested in history and Greek mythology as well, Samos could very well be the vacation of your dreams.

As mentioned in my detailed Greek islands Travel Guide , I always recommend travelers to combine their trips to Samos with a visit to the coast of Turkey, if possible.

I enjoyed your article, The Beginner’s Guide to Samos. My wife and I are considering visiting Samos Oct. 9 for five days. Which village or town would you recommend as a home base for the first time visitor? We enjoy exploring back streets & water fronts, mingling with locals, short hikes, archeological sites, wineries and FOOD!

Many thanks! Glenn Canada

8 Reasons You’ll Fall In Love With This Lesser-Known Greek Island

  • News and Tips
  • Travel With Confidence

It's imperative to feel comfortable and safe while traveling. Medjet provides premier air medical transport and travel protection, providing peace of mind for an affordable price.

Samos is a Greek Island in the Eastern Aegean Sea. It’s separated from Turkey by the mile-wide Mycale Strait. Samos can be reached by direct flight from Athens or by ferry (the trip takes 12 hours). If you happen to be in Turkey, a two-hour ferry runs from the lovely port town of Kusadasi to Samos, a journey which I have made many times whilst living in Bodrum, Turkey.

At just 183 square miles, Samos is one of the smaller Greek islands, but oh, what a variety of sights awaits you here. That is the main reason why I like Samos so much and have returned so many times. Honey, sweet Muscat wine, craggy mountains to hike, beaches to sunbathe and swim, friendly locals, and impressive monuments of antiquity will satisfy any interest and, best of all, they’re within easy reach of each other. On Samos, you really don’t need a guided tour. Follow our suggestions and piece together your own itinerary.

You don’t need to rent a car either; local buses are fun to ride, although the timetables are often a bit vague. If you are stuck, no problem: Call a taxi and it will rescue you.

Although Samos has a thriving nightlife in Vathy, the overall ambiance is one of tranquility, inviting to contemplation. Maybe that’s why famous philosophers and scientists of antiquity including Epicurus, the astronomer Aristarchus, and Pythagoras all lived and taught here. Indulge in the epicurean lifestyle, let yourself be carried away by a full life of simplicity in gorgeous surroundings, watch the stars, taste the wine, float in the sea, or hike the mountain trails.

1. Choose Your Beach

Isn’t it nice to have your choice of beaches? On Samos, you find pebble beaches, sandy beaches, and even one nudist beach if that is your taste . None of them are crowded, all are surrounded by green hills and mountains and lead into the aquamarine blue, shallow sea which makes them suitable for kids if you happen to bring the family.

Psili Amos is the sandy beach, also closest to Turkey, with sunbeds and a beach bar.

Lemonakia is a pebble beach, reached by climbing down a 330-foot staircase, so not suitable for those who need an accessible experience.

Livasaki Beach, at a distance of six miles from Samos Town, is also a pebble beach but features a particularly shallow sea and many rows of sunbeds.

Tsamadou Beach, another pebble beach is the one with nudist bathing restricted to the eastern end.

2. Indulge In Samos Wine

Samos is an island that alternates between mountain ranges and valleys. The two major ranges are Kerkis and Ampelos. On the northern slopes of Mount Kerkis where the land gently slopes toward Karlovasi, you’ll find the famous terraced vineyards that produce the muscatel grapes, from which the sweet Samos dessert wine is made. Visit the UMC cooperative and vine museum to learn everything about the history and cultivation of Samos wine and, of course, to taste and buy to your heart’s content. It is however currently closed to individual visits, so you are better off enjoying tastings at the Vakakis winery.

Historic Eupalinos Tunnel in Samos.

3. Eupalinos, A Tunnel Experience Like No Other

The Eupalinos Tunnel , a masterpiece of engineering constructed in the sixth century B.C., was built to supply the city of Samos with water from the mountains. The excavation and construction were carried out with incredible precision. Nearly two miles long, the water ran through ceramic pipes, which to this day are undamaged and can be seen whilst you walk the tunnel. The full length is not open to the public, but what you can visit is impressive enough. You reach the entrance of the tunnel, located at a distance of nine miles from Samos city, by either walking from the nearest bus stop or by taxi.

Don’t be surprised: It’s just a roped-off square hole in the ground, thankfully marked by signs. You descend shallow but slippery stairs into the depth of the tunnel which is well lit, but low. A word of warning: If you are claustrophobic, this is not good for you. And, if you are overweight, you might get stuck( as a rather big friend of mine did). This tunnel experience is only for fit and slim people.

Cave of Pythagoras in Samos, Greece.

4. Cave Enthusiasts, This Island Is For You

If you like caves, Samos offers two astonishing treasures for you. The first is the Cave of Pythagoras. The famous philosopher and mathematician had to hide from Samos’s tyrant Polycrates and found refuge in a cave on the eastern side of Mount Kerkis. There are in fact two caves close to each other. It’s believed that Pythagoras lived in one and taught in the other. There is also a spring at the end of the first cave that provided him with water. Access to the caves is steep and rather difficult, so this cave adventure is best suited for those who are confident in their fitness.

A somewhat more accessible cave experience is the cave church of Panagia Spiliani . Located on Mount Kastro, this is a monastery and church carved deep into the mountainside. Some believe that this was the hiding place of Pythagoras rather than the cave mentioned above. It is the location of a revered statue of the Virgin Mary with an intriguing legend attached. You’ll have a splendid view over the sea, but to reach the bottom of the cave, you have to negotiate 95 steps.

5. Great Museums For Lovers Of Antiquity

Let’s start with my favorite, the Archaeology Museum of Vathy. Vathy is a hillside suburb of Samos Town. The museum actually consists of two buildings with exhibits that highlight Samos’s ancient history. You can’t miss the massive statue of a Kuros. He stands 18 feet tall, and although he is missing half of his left leg, you will be in awe just because of the sheer size and wonder how the ancient sculptors were able to make and erect such a massive statue.

The Pythagorion Archaeological Museum is located in the modern part of Heraion, so you may combine a visit to the ancient ruins (a sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Hera) with a stroll around this museum, divided chronologically from antiquity to the Romans and Byzantines.

6. You’ll Love The Seaside Villages

Samos town is really pretty with whitewashed houses and a lovely promenade along the harbor where you can see the ferry from Turkey docking as well as some private yachts and other boats. Right on the waterfront is my favorite hotel, aptly named Samos , with a lovely roof terrace and pool. The real beauty queen however is Kokkari . A former fishing village just a few miles from Samos Town, the setting couldn’t be more romantic. Blue and white houses with red roofs tumble down the hillside to a narrow promenade and the harbor where still a few wooden fishing boats are floating on the sea. Two headlands shelter the port, covered with pine trees. And the promenade is lined with taverns and cafes where you can sit on the terraces with the water nearly lapping at your feet and enjoy a glass of Samos wine.

Rocks and water at Potami Waterfalls.

7. Get Wet At A Waterfall

If you want to refresh yourself somewhere other than at one of Samos’ beaches, enjoy nature, and are fit for a hike, make your way to the Potami Waterfalls . Approximately two miles from Karlovasi, you have to drive further until you reach the Potami River. The walk leads along the river until you come to a lake which you have to cross (be prepared for cold water), then you’ll come to a channel which ultimately leads to the waterfalls. Then comes another lake to cross. To reach the top of the waterfalls you have to climb a steep wooden staircase. Not that long ago, there was just a rope to climb up! Even so, it’s only for the very fit, but the reward is just spectacular. Gushing water, crystal clear lakes, and plenty of pine trees await. You can swim in the lakes but getting your feet wet whilst wading through them may be refreshment enough.

8. Gorgeous Walks On Mount Kerkis

If you are into serious hiking, head for the rocky hinterland of Samos around its highest elevation, Mount Kerkis. There are no less than 45 signposted routes, some steeper than others. Along the way, you’ll come across caves, gorges, and chapels and may find mountain goats with bells around their necks as your companions. Beautiful as it is and stunning as the views are, this is only for experienced hikers and it might even be best to go with a guide .

If you are after a lazy beach vacation, skip Samos. There are many other Greek islands that offer just that. Samos calls for people who are fit and into nature adventures and have a keen interest in ancient history, and don’t mind climbing around ruins. For beachier inspiration, consider

Samos: A Greek Paradise

Samos Island

Greece is known for its spattering of islands throughout the Mediterranean, Ionian, and Aegean Sea. There are over 6,000 islands, several hundred of which are inhabited. With azure blue waters, iconic white-wash houses clinging to the side of ocean front cliffs, and delicious cuisine, it’s no wonder these islands are a big part of what gives Greece its mass appeal.

The Greek islands are grouped into categories depending on their location. The Ionian group is off the northwest coast of the mainland, the Saronic group is mostly small islands just off the coast of Athens, the Cyclades are a big cluster of popular vacation islands in the central Aegean, the Sporades are a small cluster off Greece’s northeast coast, the Dodecanese are the farthest south reaching islands along the Turkish coast, and the North Aegean are some of the largest islands that dot the Turkish coast above the Dodecanese.

Each group has a distinct style and every island has its unique charm. My sister and I were fortunate enough to experience all that Samos had to offer for a quick weekend getaway, and we were immediately smitten.

Samos is one of the North Aegean Islands just off the east coast of Turkey. The island is only a 1 hour and 20-minute ferry ride from the Turkish resort town of Kuşadası. The quick trip has made Samos a very popular destination for Turks during the summer months.

I was expecting a typical tourist trap island with jacked up prices, annoying hustle from street venders, and large resorts lining the beaches. I was very pleasantly surprised upon my arrival. Samos was nothing like what I had pictured.

PYTHAGORION

We boarded the ferry at the Turkish port of Kuşadası, cleared passport control, and found a seat on the ferry. After a short, easy ride we arrived at Pythagorion, one of the two port villages in Samos.

After waiting almost an hour to clear Greek customs, we were finally free to find our guesthouse and explore the island .

Pythagorion, for all its popularity, is adorable. A stone road frames the harbor with an unbreaking line of small restaurants, all serving authentic Greek food.

Pythagorion

The main drag runs perpendicular to the harbor road and is home to souvenir shops, cafes, ice cream parlors, more restaurants, and convenience stores. On the other side of the arrival dock, there is a small, pebble beach with lounge chairs provided by a free standing outdoor restaurant.

Pythagorion

Drive or bike a few kilometers outside of town and you’ll find two much longer beaches – Pythagorion Beach and Potokaki Beach – right next to each other.

Pythagorion beach and potokaki beach

The guesthouse was a quick 400 meter walk from the port down a quaint little alley with neighboring restaurant. Studios Iris was one of the most budget-friendly options we could find at 44 Euros/night, but it was comfortable. The accommodation was basic, but the room was a decent size with two balconies, A/C, and kitchenette.

FOOD & DRINK

One of the main goals of the trip was to sample as much Greek food as possible and try some of the famous white wines for which Samos has become famous.

The food certainly did not disappoint, nor did the wine. For three days I lived on Greek Salads , Gyros , Souvlaki, grilled fish , and a refreshing (and potent!) local white wine.

Greek salads

At one restaurant, we ordered what we thought was one glass of wine each for 6 Euros. What was served was two 500ml bottles of 12.5% local brew! A great deal, but there was no way we could each finish one.

Greek white wine

Not to worry – the cheerful waiter assured us it was so problem to take it away. This happened several more times throughout the visit where we left a restaurant toting an unfinished bottle of wine. Talk about great hospitality!

Another must try is Ouzo , the anise flavored, milky-white liquer. It can be drank straight or mixed with water. The taste takes some getting used to, but it’s a traditional Greek drink. Do as the locals do!

Ouzo

GETTING AROUND

Samos is one of the largest Greek islands, so it’s necessary to rent a vehicle to get around. Our plan had been to rent motorbikes, but after asking around to several shops we were disappointed to learn that no one would rent us a bike without a motorcycle license. We later found out it’s actually illegal for a shop to rent a motorbike to somone without a proper license, or for us to operate one. Samos strictly enforces this law.

We rented a car from the friendly staff at Enterprise instead. Our disappointment over the motorbikes soon faded when we discovered the amount of ground we had to cover to do and see what we wanted. Not to mention the windy, mountainous roads and extreme heat would have made the journey via motorbike more difficult. We were thankful for the car’s sun protection and cooling A/C!

DRIVING IN SAMOS

One of the interesting things about Samos is that as soon as you leave the developed coastal villages, the true spirit of the island emerges. Just a few kilometers outside of Pythagorion we started climbing into the mountains, following the curvy roads through the many small villages. Most of the roads are paved, but there are certainly places where only gravel exists.

Samos driving

Driving slow is imperative . The roads are very narrow, and at times not even wide enough for two cars to pass. Much of the road travels along the cliffs and often without guardrails. While this makes for some stunning panaramic views, it could also be diasterous if the driver is not paying attention. I allowed my sister to carry that burden while I snapped some great pictures!

Samos panaramic view

PYTHAGORAS CAVES

One of Samos’ claims to fame are the caves where the great Greek mathmatician, Pythagoras, spent part of his life. He was accustomed to solidarity and prefered to hash out his thoughts and theories in isolation, thereby retreating to these caves.

They are roughly an hour and a half drive outside of Pythagorion along some undeveloped gravel roads. Between the few signs pointing the direction of the caves and Google Maps, we had no problem finding our destination.

Pythagoras cave sign

The only indication that we had actually reached the caves was a small yellow sign perched in front of a sole cafe at the bottom of a gravel road. A short history of the caves and Pythagoras is available inside the cafe. Parking and access is free.

To reach the caves we faced a 10-minute climb up some very steep steps. At the top there was a small, ancient chapel, and as promised, two caves right next to one another. The caves themselves are not overwhelming, however the fact that they are of great historical and cultural significance makes it worth a visit.

Pythagoras caves

POTAMI WATERFALLS

From the caves, Potami Waterfalls are another hour to the northeast side of Samos. The way to the falls is clearly marked on the main road. Street parking is available and there’s no charge to access the waterfalls.

Potami waterfalls sign

Leading to the falls is a very easy, flat, 1 kilometer dirt path through a dense forest.  At the end of the path there are two options to reach the falls. The first is to climb some very steep, ricketty stairs that disappear into the wilderness above. The second is to wade into a shallow pool of water that disappears around the corner of a big rock cluster.

Since we had our bags with us, we decided against getting wet and chose to take the stairs. Soon after our ascent, we reached a treehouse cafe nestled into the cliff side, overlooking the gorge. Carefully decending the otherside, we were again faced with a pool of water. After this point, the only way to reach the falls was to walk through the winding waterway.

Potami waterfalls

We waded in and followed the lazy river in a small set of falls. We continued, scrambling up rocks and climbing rope ladders over small waterfalls in order to reach the bigger falls at the end. At one point we were holding our bags over our heads because the water level was up to our necks!

Now would be a good time to mention that it is best not to take a bag – or anything that can’t get wet – on this trek. Because it will get wet.

Potami waterfalls

We finally reached the big falls, which is about 15 meters tall. What the waterfall lacks in size, it makes up for in the gorgeous natural setting. Not to mention the journey there (and back) was the best part!

KOKKARI BEACHES

After the waterfall adventure, it was time for some sun and relaxation at one of Kokkari’s beautiful beaches. Driving northwest from Potami, we first reached Lemonakia Beach, a gorgeous, sheltered bay with pebble shores, crystal-clear water, and plenty of beach chairs and umbrellas. The scenery here is serene and the vibe is laid-back.

Kokkari beaches

A few kilometers further, we arrived to Kokkari Beach, a much longer strip that runs along the length of the road. There are plenty of cafes and amenities here as well, however we prefered Lemonakia’s more secluded environment.

ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM

There are other ways to occupy yourself in Samos just in case you need a break from the lush greenery, seabreeze, and delicious food.

Just off the main drag in Pythagorion is the Pythagorion Archeological Museum. The entrance fee is 6 Euros and is well worth it.

The two-story museum has a comprehensive collection of ancient artifacts all of which have been discovered in Samos. There are gold coins from 700 B.C., jewelry from the Roman period, and pottery and figurines of the Archaic period dating back to the 6th and 7th century.

Samos archeological museum

The second floor is almost entirely dedicted to a collection of very impressive statues. Displayed out in the open are busts, partial, and full body statues of Emperors, Princes, Gods, Goddesses, and the like. Fascinating and a little eerie!

Emperor claudius

Samos far exceeded my expectations and left me wanting more. With so many islands to discover, I have no doubt I will find myself on Greek soil again in the future. No matter which Greek island you choose to visit, I’m certain you’ll fall in love just like I did.
