The Fox and Hounds

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Just returned from a week in Salou and fortunately the apartment I stayed in was located next to the Fox and Hounds. They offered a wide variety of dishes, all of which were equally delicious and always served quickly and arrived piping hot. Me and... my friend ate here almost every day at least once, sometimes even twice because we loved it so much. The quality, choice and price of the food were spot on. The drinks were very reasonably priced too. All of the staff were very friendly, adding to the great experience of eating there. Can't find a single fault with the restaurant and if I return to Salou I will definitely be back in the Fox and Hounds More

Thankyou for being so kind and visit everyday in our restaurant Hope to see you soon thanks

Came for an Indian on Sunday, was the best Indian I have ever had in my life. Perfect consistency, extremely flavourful and tasty was fantastic. In a great spot not far from shops on wooden walkway area, open late doing cheap drinks and cocktails. Staff... extremely friendly and welcoming we regularly attended for other meals and drinks in the afternoon. Will be coming back on our next trip to Salou! More

food and travel salou

We were a table of 14 service was excellent and our food was amazing, orders varied from curries, fish & chips, pizzas and ribs to name a few. There is a super selection on the menu and we couldn’t fault anything we ate, all plates... were empty which is a super sign. Sam couldn’t have been more helpful once orders were taken starters arrived in about 10 minutes and mains followed not long after. We would highly recommend seeking out this gem if you are in Salou it defo worth it as food amazing and great price. More

Came here after seeing it on Facebook and it wasn’t worth it the steak asked for well done came really pink and tasted horrible like an off butter taste was weird kids jacket potato with beans had about 5 beans on n the spud we... thought would be small was an absolute beast was huge. The lamb chops were edible but wasn’t a great wow factor for a meat lover. The kids pasta came with an explosion of herbs around not needed! Wouldn’t recommend for food but drinks were ok staff was nice though More

Well after all the build up we heard about this place we thought we would treat ourselves for our last holiday meal in Salou. Wish we hadn't bothered. Hearing the best curry in town, we decided to give it a go, all 3 of us... opting for the curry options. 2 x chicken tikka masala 1 x child's butter chicken. Adult portions arrived first (very fast after ordering) we thought how small they were, then the child portion arrived seemed bigger then the adult? We then started eating and we were glad it was a small portion as quite frankly it was awful. The tikka tasted like a tin of tomato soup watered down with a few chunks of chicken thrown in. It was bland, no creamy coconut mildly spiced flavour you expect. We tried our sons butter chicken and that wasn't much better either, slightly more flavour in this with visible herbs/spices but still no better than a micro meal. The waiter asked if everything was OK as we were just pushing the food around not really eating it, he said he could tell from my face we didn't like it. Seemed to keep his distance after that, we pretty promptly asked for the bill and left hungry and very disappointed. If you visit don't be pushed into ordering "the best curry in town" as that's pretty much what the waiters try to push when they give you the menus. Whilst sitting here (various evenings for cocktails) that's all we heard. More

We ate here on our family trip to Salou having heard great reviews previously. We were, however, very disappointed. While the service was good and our host most engaging with our young kids we felt the food did not live up to the expectation. My wife... got a curry which was average at best while I had the burger and chips which again were very forgettable. The kids meals were similar to most other places we ate in with the exception of the sausage and mash. My little girl got one sausage and a spoonful of mash which was unpleasant both in terms of appearance and taste. I have yet to visit a restaurant where just one sausage was given, even as a kids meal? The cost of our meal was on par with other establishments but in comparison to other places we ate at during our stay the food didn’t come close. I certainly won’t be making a return visit. More

Went to fox & hounds last night after reading so many good reviews. I ordered fish, chips & mushy peas. What I got was a plate of frozen food fish was all mushy inside the worst frozen fish I have ever ate. Chips were dry... and I couldn’t even touch the mushy peas. My husband ordered lasagne which wasn’t much better. The food here is bad quality cooked from frozen. Although the staff were really nice. They noticed I wasn’t eating it and didn’t charge me for my meal I was offered to choose something else and free shots but I just couldn’t face it … Please don’t go to fox & hounds there are so many nice places to go to in Salou that have fresh cooked food that is homemade😟 More

Checked reviews and googled good family places to eat. Phoned and booked as I was told it is a busy place. Arrived got seated no bother took drinks order all ok… menu to suit everyone as you will read from others. Pizza was fine. Sausage... and Mash or should I say smash out a packet! Lasagna no meat! Southern fried chick wrap frozen food chopped up… Steak pie was advertised as homemade but looked like one out a foil you would buy frozen.. Food was served fast but wasn’t up to much unfortunately and would recommend. I thought with the staff clearly seeing the wrap wasn’t eaten and we said about it they might have removed it from the bill! Nope! Better places to eat… More

Our group kept coming back here again and again, the servers engage in good banter, and the food is brilliant which doesn't hurt. Normally places that have such a large and varied menu struggle to deliver on quality, safe to say that is of no... issue here the food is packed with flavour and the cocktail pricing makes for a great place to have dinner or just have a little drink of an evening . Sam the man will look after you. More

Visited the Fox and Hounds twice during a recent family holiday to Salou. The first time we had a couple of cocktails and a shared platter which was ok, not bad, but not amazing either. We decided to go back for our final meal of... the holiday and looked forward to ‘the best curry in town’. It was actually the exact opposite! We ordered Chicken Tikka Masala for us, and a Butter chicken for our son. The chicken tikka masala was a really small portion, watery, and tasted like chicken pieces in a slightly spicy Heinz tomato soup! Our son will only ever eat Butter Chicken curries back home and even he left most of it on his plate. Disgusting ‘curry’! If you like cheap and cheerful frozen chicken nuggets and chips type meals then this place will be right up your street. Definitely not for us. Totally overhyped place. More

This place is a glorified kebab shop. Everything comes with chips and salad which consists of lots of lettuce and one cherry tomato. The rest is heated up frozen fried food. They bring you loads of different condiments, presumably to make the food more edible.... Plus the sangria is weak as heck. Avoid unless you want crap food and to be surrounded by fat tattooed English people! More

The Fox and Hound's is a fantastic bar and restaurant on C.de la Rìoja and was one of the many place's we went to on our holiday in Salou. This bar and restaurant has a fine food and drink's range and was really busy when we... visited early in the afternoon on a roasting hot day. The interior is brilliant with a really modern look and feel with many interesting fixtures and features and superb decor and lots of good seating options throughout it's whole interior and a grest outside terrace and on our visit we sat outside as it was so hot. On our visit to the Fox and Hounds we had a Estrella Damm Cerveza Mediterrània an excellent Spanish lager which were served iced cold and where really well priced. This is a brilliant bar and restaurant that's in an excellent area of Salou and is worth going to for a meal or a few drinks.(This is my first review of the Fox and Hounds). Opening Hours. Monday-Sunday-09.30-02.00. More

Had Chicken Tikka and Onion Bhajis to start followed by Chicken Madras, Chicken Tikka Jalfrezi, Pilau Rice and Cheese Naan all cooked by the Madras Chef and were very tasty. Sam the owner and Andrew gave us very friendly service with good advice. If you... like authenic tasty curries then don't miss out in this place. More

So first of all, the man who’s outside is so warm and welcoming and has a funny side to him which is nice. We’ve sat in our same place every time we have came which was every day for lunch and twice for tea. The... cheese and ham toastie was to die for and we had this 4 days in a row. The build your own pizza (we chose pepperoni jalepenos and peppers) also 10/10. Tea time we had the curries and when I say they are the best Indian curries I’ve had I mean it. The meat was so tender it just fell apart. The onion Bahjis were beautiful and came with a selection of dips (mint yoghurt, garlic Mayo and what tasted like mango chutney) All of the men and girl here was so kind and didn’t fail to meet your needs. The food is unbelievable yet so cheap. We had to curries and a naan bread and 2 pints for €36 euro. I’d definitely come back here for the food and the people I can definitely say I have enjoyed coming here and urge people to go here when they are in Salou 🤍 More

We were met outside the restaurant by what feels like the man that runs the show, an excellent sales man, could sell you anything and make u want to buy it. We were then brought to our table where our waiter Andrew helped us for... our lovely evening meal. Over the course of our meal we felt like we knew everything about our waiter Andrew as he was so friendly and easy to talk to. The friendly and funny staff along side with the wide variety of perfect food is a rare thing to get but the men in fox and hound delivered it perfectly. More

Take a break from the excitement and enjoy a meal at one of the park’s many restaurants before heading back to your hotel for the night.

Day 3: Tarragona Day Trip

Take a short train ride to the ancient Roman city of Tarragona, located just a few miles from Salou. Explore the city’s Roman ruins, including the amphitheatre and the aqueduct. Day 4: Aquopolis Water Park Costa Daurada – La Pineda Salou

Cool off on your fourth day by visiting the Aquopolis Water Park, which offers a variety of water slides and pools, as well as a dolphin and sea lion show. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the park’s newest attraction, the King Khajuna, the tallest free-fall slide in Europe. Relax in the sun on one of the many loungers or grab a bite to eat at one of the park’s restaurants.

Day 5: Cambrils Day Trip

Take a day trip to Cambrils, a charming fishing village located just a few miles from Salou. Stroll through the town’s historic streets and sample some of the local seafood. Relax on the town’s beautiful beaches or take a boat trip along the coastline before returning to Salou for the night.

Day 6: Ferrari Land

Visit Ferrari Land, a theme park dedicated to the famous car brand. The park features a range of attractions, including a vertical accelerator ride that reaches speeds of up to 180km/h. Take a break from the excitement and enjoy a meal at one of the park’s restaurants before heading back to Salou for the night.

Day 7: Relax and Shopping

Take the last day of your trip to relax and shop in Salou’s city centre. Treat yourself to a spa day at one of the town’s many wellness centres or enjoy a leisurely stroll through the streets, stopping at local shops and boutiques. In the evening, head to the Paseo Jaume I, a seaside promenade that’s perfect for a romantic stroll or a night out with friends.

In conclusion, Salou is a fantastic destination that offers a wide range of activities and attractions for tourists. With seven days to explore, you can experience the town’s stunning beaches, family-friendly theme parks, and historic sites. So pack your bags and get ready for an unforgettable trip to Salou.

Salou is a large resort town on the Costa Dorada in Catalonia, Spain, 10km from Tarragona and 112km from Barcelona. Its location makes it a great base from which to explore these beautiful metropolitan areas. The golden beaches of Salou have helped make it the most visited holiday resort on the Costa Dorada. Social media brims with pictures of bathers basking in the sunshine on these glowing sands, but is there more to Salou than its beautiful beaches?

Read on to find out!

Getting to Salou

Transit to spain.

Reus Airport (REU) is a 15 minute drive from Salou, but it is small so flying to it can be expensive. The more common method is to fly to Barcelona, a 2hrs 35mins trip from Dublin. Barcelona Airport (BCN) is easy to navigate, but queues can be lengthy so arrive in good time for your return trip. There are two terminals, but most short-haul airlines fly from Terminal 2. This is likely where you will be heading for your return flight.

  • Find Cheap Flights to Salou

Transit to Salou

Assuming you do not hire a car, there are four options here, but avoid getting a taxi due to the costs.

The Bus Plana runs direct to Salou from the airport for €18 each way. You can buy tickets at the machines beside the bus stops, but we recommend purchasing them online through the link below instead. The journey takes approximately 2 hours.

  • Buy Plana Bus Tickets

Catch a train from Barcelona Sants Train Station, connected to the airport via Metro. The metro leaves every 7 minutes and costs under €5 for a single ticket. It takes 20 minutes to reach Barcelona Sants. From here take a train to Salou Port Aventura, which will take around 1 hour 30 minutes. You’ll still be 10 minutes from central Salou, which you can reach by bus or taxi from Port Aventura.

Private Transfer:

If booking a package holiday we recommend booking transfers, especially if you have children with you. Transfers are generally great value here compared to places like Sorrento. They can typically get you to your hotel in under 1 hour and 30 minutes! We book our package holidays through LoveHolidays.ie, who offer very cheap transfers for Salou.

  • Check out Salou All-Inclusive Package Holidays
  • Check out our Travel Guide to Sorrento

Train tickets from Barcelona Sants to Salou Port Aventura cannot be purchased online, and must be purchased at the station.

Where to Stay in Salou

Salou is full of accommodation options catering for every kind of need. We always book our package holidays through LoveHolidays.ie , as they are pretty much unbeatable for price in Ireland right now. Those looking for simplicity without venturing too far can avail of their excellent all-inclusive packages. If cost is a concern then there are plenty of good two and three star hotels and apartments on offer. We usually opt for something in between, with one of their superb four-star hotels.

  • 4 Star Hotel Package Holiday Deals

Hotels in Salou

We stayed half-board at the four-star Hotel Las Vegas . We usually avoid half-board because eating out is a big part of our holidays, but Salou isn’t known for cuisine. The hotel boasted lovely staff and a brilliant buffet breakfast, as well as four pools. One of the pools was a majestic adults only rooftop plunge pool. It came with unbelievable views over Llevant Beach.

Dinner was fine, with a plethora of options for all tastes. The hotel was about a one minute walk from both the resort center and its incredible beach. We would very happily stay here again.

  • Check out Salou Hotels

We often recommend staying further from resort centers (see Sorrento), but stay central in Salou so that you can bring your floats to the beach and back!

Food and Drink

Food in salou.

Prices are outstanding in Salou, with a main course such as a burger costing €10 – €14. There are greeters outside most bars and restaurants, but they are pleasant and not nearly as pushy as in other resorts. There are plenty of nice restaurants like The Roadhouse further from the seafront. You’ll also find the usual staples like McDonalds and Burger King for those pickier eaters.

Ice-cream lovers have their pick of delicious gelaterias to choose from. There are also incredible sweet shops in the center of the resort, selling gigantic sugary treats!

Michaelangelo Supermarkets are everywhere in Salou, and are especially ideal for anyone staying in self-catering accommodation.

Salou isn’t known for food, so go for a half-board package as you won’t be missing out.

A cold glass of Sangria with some watermelon in Salou

Drink in Salou

Hot Beverages:

There aren’t many charming cafés dotted around Salou. There are however plenty of places to get a nice coffee in the morning, but they double as restaurants too.

A beer in Salou costs anywhere from €2 to €4, and cocktails range from €6 to €9. These are some of the best prices in Europe and the cocktails are incredible.

There aren’t a lot of great Spanish Bars, so head to one of the many Irish or British Bars instead. Old Brown Cow is the pick of the British bunch, but don’t let your trip pass without visiting Danny Boy’s . One of the best Irish Bars in the world, its prices are cheap, drinks are good and the live music is incredible! They serve up great craic, as well as showing all the GAA and Premier League matches, in this home away from home.

For something wilder head to Carrer de Carles Buigas , the main strip. It is lined with some brilliant nightclubs for a night of drinking and dancing.

Spain is famous for Sangria, a delicious punch containing red wine and fruits. Although massively popular with tourists, locals don’t actually consume that much of the beverage. It’s not expensive so sample this lovely beverage at least once during your trip.

The tasty Estrella Damm is the beer of choice here, as it is brewed in nearby Barcelona.

Visit Salou from June to August to experience the brilliant madness of the peak season, with averages of up to 31 degrees. Although busy, the resort caters for the numbers really well. The beach is vast so space is plentiful, and the atmosphere created by the crowds adds to the experience. Most of the main attractions in Salou require high temperatures to be enjoyed to the fullest, and the air conditioning here is also second to none.

Avoid April and October as the weather is unpredictable, and in Salou there isn’t much to do if it rains!

Travel and Transport

Travel on foot.

Many of Salou’s hotels and apartments are located close to the beach, unquestionably its main attraction. The roads are lined with good footpaths and the traffic isn’t overly manic, so we advise travelling on foot where possible. It is a safe location, so walking at night in groups is fine.

Public Transport in Salou

Salou is excellently served by some of the best public transport in Spain. Taxis are cheap and also easy to find, with taxi ranks dotted along the beach front. The bus company Plana has stops located all around the resort and connects Salou seamlessly with places like Barcelona, Cambrils and Tarragona. A fun little Tourist Train brings you around the main tourist points in Salou for just €6, and even offers audio guides. Tickets must be purchased on the train, but it does accept card.

  • Check out our Travel Guide to Barcelona

We advise catching these tourist trains on day one of any holiday, as they will show you many great places to revisit later in your trip.

Vehicle Hire in Salou

There are many car hire providers in Salou for as little as €30 per day, but we advise against it. The good footpath infrastructure makes walking a much better option. Traffic gets heavy in the center of the resort, so it may actually be quicker to walk than drive! It can be fun however to rent scooters or bicycles and cycle to nearby Cambrils for a day.

  • Find Cheap Bicycle Rentals

Beauty and Atmosphere

Salou is undeniably picturesque due to its golden beaches and clear blue waters, but the bustling streets at the center of the resort offer another kind of beauty. At night families descend upon this magical land of happiness as they enjoy themselves beneath the beautiful palm trees.

Carrer de Saragossa

The Carrer de Carles Buigas is the main strip where you will find much of the nightlife, but at its terminus sits the family-friendly Carrer de Saragossa. This joyous street is illuminated by an overhead lighting system, and is home to arcades, amusements and plenty of shops. Head there after dinner for a gorgeous stroll with your children or partner.

Font Lluminosa

On the beach side of the Carrer de Saragossa you will find this Luminous Fountain. Erected in 1973, the fountain usually lights up at sunset each evening for a fantastic show, but unfortunately the recent droughts in the area have put a stop to the shows for the time-being.

Carrer de Barcelona

For a more authentic look at Salou, take a stroll down Carrer de Barcelona which starts at the marina. Unlike Carrer de Saragossa, this beautiful street is best explored during the day. It is essentially Salou’s old town, offering a glimpse into what life was like here before throngs of tourists arrived, and contains many brilliant shops and eateries.

Llevant Beach is easily the most popular beach in Salou. Over 1km long and blessed with perfect golden sands, it is easy to see why the Costa Dorada means Gold Coast . Head there after dinner for a romantic stroll as you listen to the gentle waves. At night this beach hums with activity, as parents enjoy a drink at the quaint beach clubs while watching their kids play in the sand or the sea. The glistening lights of the resort in the backdrop make this one of the most romantic scenes in Europe.

The Coastal Path in Salou on a beautiful summer's day with Llevant Beach in the distance.

The Coastal Path

This terrific stroll takes you along 2.4km of beautiful coastline, and even further if you don’t mind venturing away from the sea. Those less fond of long treks should head here anyway, as the area around its origin at the bottom of Llevant Beach is simply stunning. Stroll the wooden walkways as you admire the views of the giant Salou Letters, the Monumento Els Pilons and the splendid Mediterranean sea.

Locals are extremely friendly and bounce well off the Irish banter. Salou is a melting pot of people from Spain, Ireland, Britain and France which makes it the perfect location to pick up new friends. People of all ages take to the streets here after dark and the friendly vibes are palpable! The resort oozes fun and laughter, with the Irish Pubs being particularly enjoyable in this regard.

Those looking for something quieter can head to the beach clubs by the sea, for a quiet cocktail as they watch the tide approaching. Salou somehow manages to have a fun and infinitely relaxing atmosphere simultaneously, ensuring there is something for everyone.

Although it has a great nightlife, Salou is much more family orientated than places like Santa Ponsa or Ibiza.

Things to Do in Salou

Llevant beach.

There are many blue flag beaches along this coastline, but you won’t want to visit the others after you’ve tried Llevant Beach. This accessible gem runs along the main promenade of Passeig Jaume I, and is home to 1km of soft golden sands. Although it gets busy, it is long and wide enough to easily cater for the crowds, so space is no issue.

The shallow sea and minimal waves make this an incredibly safe bathing spot. The Mediterranean water is much warmer than the seas around Ireland, yet still refreshing, with almost no seaweed or rocks to contend with.

The facilities are first class, with lifeguards on duty, sunbeds, parasols, toilets and children’s play areas. The more adventurous can take part in banana boating, rent pedal boats equipped with slides, or even go parasailing!

There are plenty of shower facilities along the beach, but only some of them are switched on due to the ongoing drought in the area.

House of Illusion

The House of Illusion, located at the western end of Llevant Beach, is one of the most unique holiday experiences available in Salou. During the peak season the magic show takes place twice a day, on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday.

Four ticket options are available, ranging from VIP (€90) to Drinks Only (€40), all of which offer unlimited drink refills. On arrival you will be given a seat in Houdini’s Attic, a rooftop bar, while you wait for the show to start. The tickets recommend arriving 30 minutes early, but we recommend coming just 10 minutes early to avoid being coaxed into spending money at the bar, having already purchased a drinks package.

The show takes place in a candlelit theatre, and three of the four ticket options come with a three course dinner. You will be seated at your own private table, where you will witness some close up magic. The show itself is a comedic blend of fire breathing, magicians, illusionists and acrobatics and, although geared more towards children, it is definitely a fun day out for adults too.

  • Buy House of Illusion Tickets

The food is very basic so eat before you visit and just purchase the drinks only package.

Visit Port Aventura Park

Portaventura World is a gargantuan theme park resort, home to two theme parks (Port Aventura Park and Ferrari Land) and a water park (Caribe Aquatic Park).

Port Aventura Park is the main attraction. Spain’s first theme park opens daily from 10:30am to 10:30pm and features shows and over 40 attractions, set across six fun worlds. World famous attractions include Furius Baco (a heart stopping 135km/h roller coaster), and the terrifying Hurakan Condor tower drop. Arrive super early because the queues for rides can be over an hour long at mid-day! There are a plethora of restaurants and shops available, but they can be extortionately expensive.

A one day ticket costs €48 and does not give access to the other parks. Purchase your tickets through the links below.

  • Buy Port Aventura Entrance Tickets
  • Buy Port Aventura and Ferrari Land Entrance Tickets

Get €25 off your ticket for Port Aventura by purchasing special Chuba Chub promotional packs in the supermarkets in Salou.

Visit Ferrari Land

The second theme park at Port Aventura world is also the only theme park in Europe dedicated to the motor giants. It treats you to shows and rides from 2pm until 10pm daily. Like Port Aventura Park, there are shops and restaurants aplenty but they are very expensive. You will have to pay for many of the rides on top of the ticket price, and there are very few adult rides!

A one day ticket costs €19, and does not give access to the other parks. Skip the line by using the link below to buy tickets.

  • Buy Ferrari Land Entrance Tickets

Skip the underwhelming Ferrari Land and visit Port Aventura instead.

Visit Caribe Aquatic Park

50,000 square meters of water sports and aquatic fun awaits you at Port Aventura’s World’s very own water park. Open from 10:30am to 6:30pm daily, it is an exciting mix of petrifying slides, children’s attractions, wave pools and rapids, ensuring there is something for everyone. The queues can be insanely long and there aren’t many shaded areas on a scorching hot day. You’ll also find a mix of expensive shops and restaurants here.

A one day ticket costs €23, and does not give access to the other parks. Tickets are currently only available at the ticket booth.

The queues can ruin this waterpark experience if you don’t plan carefully, with many people resigning themselves to the lazy river for the day!

Visit Barcelona

Barcelona is reachable from Salou via a Plana bus day trip excursion for just €24, which allows 6 hours of exploration time. For more time use one of Plana’s usual bus services to get to there. Alternatively, there are many guided tours to Barcelona from Salou, providing insightful commentary as you travel. Visit Tarragona’s Market to enjoy a coffee or some wine, before exploring the many stalls. Head to the 1km long La Rambla Nova , Tarragona’s main street, featuring shops, restaurants and beautiful sculptures. This promenade is over 160 years old and is traffic free, so it is perfect for a stroll and brings you from the City Centre straight to the sea.

At one end of La Rambla lies the Old Town , home to the Roman Walls, the oldest Roman construction still conserved outside Italy.

Head to Tarragona Cathedral , to explore the largest cathedral in Catalonia. It sits impressively atop the acropolis hill, dominating this part of the city. It costs just €5 for an adult to witness this gothic wonder, constructed in 1334.

  • Purchase Tarragona Cathedral Entrance Tickets

Full menu TheFork – Restaurant Cook and Travel

Enjoyed our visit as usual but made all the more pleasurable by Manuel in the bar who was pleasant, knowledgeable, and who understood exactly what we wanted. His manners and English are impeccable a credit to you

Me and my friend went for dinner here on Tuesday 28th June as the restaurant came up number one on TripAdvisor so thought we would check it out. The food was amazing just as the service, very attentive staff. The only recommendation would be to... translate the pudding menu to English, rather than the staff member trying to translate it. More

My husband and I have just been to this restaurant and found the whole experience very 'interesting'. It was a bit beyond us to be honest. We are used to straight forward menus, starters/mains/deserts. This restaurant does not have a traditional menu. We didn't order... a starter but an unusual starter arrived anyway, it consisted of roasted cheese and quite a bit of chocolate!! Crackling in chocolate!! It was lovely just a bit weird. For the main my husband ordered a burger (it was really the only recognisable thing on the menu) and he loved it. It wasn't a straightforward burger, it had some sort of berries on it, to me it looked like blackberry jam! I chose duck, it arrived in pitta bread and wasn't like any duck I had ever had. It was presented on a hot plate and chicken wire!! Weird as I said previously. For desert we had ice cream with frozen coke and Tiramisu. The Tiramisu is to die for. We also had a pint of beer and two glasses of red wine, beautiful wine, and the bill (which we expected to be enormous) came to €45. It's a beautiful restaurant, the toilets are spotless, the food (if you can understand it) is gorgeous but be prepared to be confused!! Would we go back? Probably not, but only because we are not adventurous enough. We couldn't fault the restaurant only the confusing menu. Not a lot of English spoken by the staff so an explanation of the menu is not really possible. If you fancy a straight forward steak them I would say avoid. If you want to try something unusual then give it a go. More

Regrettably, my experience at Restaurant Cook & Travel was unequivocally one of the worst I’ve ever encountered. We opted for the most expensive and comprehensive tasting menu, anticipating a memorable evening, but were promptly let down. The service was profoundly neglectful, especially from the chef,... who showcased a blatant preference for local patrons over foreigners. Not once did he address us throughout the entire night, while we witnessed prolonged interactions with the neighboring tables, with visits lasting around 15 minutes each. This discriminatory behavior left a bitter taste, overshadowing any aspects of the meal that could have been positive. The atmosphere was tense, and the stark difference in treatment was so blatant it tainted the ambiance. The fact that the restaurant was empty should have been a red flag, a forewarning of the unpleasant experience awaiting us. It is now clear that the lack of patrons is a direct consequence of the poor service and the hostile atmosphere radiated by the staff, most notably the chef. Having been to various fine dining restaurants, this was, without a doubt, the worst experience. It’s disheartening that in 2023 we still have to witness and endure racist and xenophobic attitudes in establishments that should prioritize hospitality and respect to all customers, regardless of their background. In conclusion, Restaurant Cook & Travel was a profound disappointment, marked by neglectful service, a culinary experience tainted by discriminatory attitudes, and an unpleasant environment. I would not recommend this place to anyone, and I will certainly never return. More

The restaurant looks very modern and trendy when you arrive and the menu lives up to the appearance. We opted for the "Round the World" tasting menu - 8 courses for €35. It was certainly very interesting and a little challenging, e.g. a small taste... of gazpacho out of a test tube! While some of the dished worked really well and were lovely others were a little bland despite the over-the-top presentation - lots of dry ice and other gimmicks used. I think the first course was an anchovy on a bed of some form of savoury icecream. The anchovy was very salty and the ice cream was insipid. The sashimi was lovely but the ceviche was a bit lacking in flavor - it needed some extra punch. Prawn in peanut curry sauce was fine but not hugely impressive. Perhaps the most enjoyable course was dessert which was a mixture of small items and was lovely (and the most traditional item all night). The restaurant is trying to be very adventurous but with mixed results. It is certainly not expensive for what they are offering but the overall standard could be better. More annoyingly, the night was let down by extremely poor service all night. Having ordered food, I had to ask for the wine list at least 3 times. In the end, I opted to go for a glass of wine as my OH was not drinking and I didn't fancy a full bottle by myself! It was a real struggle to get refills as the night went on. There was a complete absence of any attempt to explain the dishes when they were presented - this may reflect a lack of English but this was not explained and it was disappointing to have very unusual dishes presented without any attempt at a description of what was being served. At least one course was delivered to the table before the earlier course was even finished! It was almost impossible to get the bill at the end of the evening - the staff were too busy chatting amongst themselves or with other customers. They also have mastered the technique of walking through the restaurant without checking to see if any customers want attention. I suspect that this restaurant aspires to be something special. It does produce some great food but it is not consistent based on my experience. More importantly, the service would want to improve dramatically. Perhaps we hit it on a bad night - the positive reviews on here would suggest so. However, I am not convinced. More

went here based on tripadvisor reviews, found it to be more like a cafe than restaurant and waited an eternity for over priced small portions. wont be back

Overall this place is not bad, but one issue changed my mind completely. I ordered risotto and they brought smth that looked like paella with very specific taste and smell (if you grilled shrimps before you know what I’m talking about). I didn’t eat it... and asked our waiter to take it away (and ofcuz removed it from the check) and can you imagine he called chief of that place and this guy told us if I don’t like then this is my problem. He didn’t take it to kitchen to Inspect the dish etc (how it does at normal places). Then he started to argue (that was very unprofessional) and in the end he said we have to pay in full or police will come. Really? It is not about money, but about attitude. Guys you HAVE to learn how to run restaurant business otherwise leave it! Not friendly, not professional, disgusting place! P.S. And risotto have to be cooked “al-dente” if you know what does it mean. More

Visited this Restaurant this evening with my partner, we chose it after its high recommendation on trip advisor. We were greeted politely when we came in and shown to our table. It was not busy. We waited patiently but were not given any menus for... at least 15 minutes. After receiving the menus it took another 15 minutes for them to take our order and we had to ask for a wine menu which was basically thrown onto the table. After another 10 minutes they took our order for wine. Throughout all this time we were not approached by any member of staff to see were we ok and I had spent most my time looking around to try and get the attention of the four staff that were working. We received our wine and our food came out pretty quick after that. Our mains arrived and as I was about to eat mine I noticed a little insect crawling on my food. I got the attention of the waiter and showed it to him. He didn't seem to understand what the problem and proceeded to get another waiter who maybe was the chef? He said he would get me another dish but made no apologies. At this stage my partner and I had enough after being seated for an hour so I told him we were leaving. He just walked away and we left after receiving no apology. We have never left a restaurant in our lives and would not contemplate doing it lightly but it was the worst experience we have ever had and is completely down to the extremely poor service we received. More

2 adults and 2 young boys. Greated and seated with perfect friendliness and a great recommendation for the wine. Started well with first kids burger arriving and tasting excellent took another 5 mins for my other sons pizza to arrive and then another 10mins for... my wifes. All tasted perfect but it was exactly 48mins later of waiting for my pork curry to finally arrive and to find the centre piece still raw, not perfect as the chef commented as I know how to cook, that ruined it all. No apologies for the delays at any stage by staff even when I went up to politely ask, as we were enjoying everything up to that point and by tasting everyone's good food how would I mind. I still would have recommended and would go back if only they hadn't decided to try charge me for the curry which I had given back uneaten and explained why. They weren't busy tonight so it's not an excuse and they should have been polite enough, even the chef whom I spoke to, to accept their errors. And no I did not pay for the curry in the end but it took a conversation I didn't want to have with the chef first. More

After looking at the positive reviews, me and my partner visited this restaurant. The menus weren’t in English so I was using my phone for translation. Around 4-5 minutes after sitting down, the waiter came to take the drinks order - to which we weren’t... ready. The waiter then preceded to demand to me when we were going to order food and drinks. After this embarrassing situation, we left. Disgusting actually. More

Great place whit nice and good staff and weithers, whit passion for food, and the food was amazing. We had a wonderful evening experiencing new taste and a good atmosphere. We will be back.....

food and travel salou

I think this place is haven for foodies. Very chilled decor and waiters. Exciting menus. The food is so fresh and delicious. The presentation was lovely but the taste was will be remembered. Excellent wines with the waiter guiding us towards a reasonably priced local... wine. Do not miss a trip here if you like food. More

The restaurant is a very modern, contemporary and well lit. The staff were very friendly and found us a table quite quickly as we had not booked. The waiter that took our drink order was very knowledgeable and explained in detail about the drinks. The... menu is quite unique with a variety of foods from around the world, so don't book if you want plain food. Again when the food was delivered, it was explained in detail and the fragrances shared around the table. The price was pretty good too. Well worth a visit More

We have dined in many countries but this restaurant certainly has the WOW! factor. We arrived during the Euro football championship games and asked if the game was showing on their to and if so, to be seated within viewing distance. Immediately taken into the... back area, beautiful bright and fresh decorated, light filled room. The ceiling points into a sky light with 4 projectors up high that project forestry and nature scenes onto the restaurant walls. Then the menu arrived......food from countries all around the globe. Wagyu beef burgers from USA, pizza from Italy, seafood from Asia, etc. But nothing on the menu was ordinary. It was special, food fit for a king. If you appreciate good food, then you MUST visit at least once in your lifetime. The amuse bouche consisted of a platter with a soft, chewy textured crisp , followed by a type of green olive that explodes in your mouth (you're told not to bite it or you'll lose the experience!) then a crispy pig skin coated in dark chocolate and finally a test tube vial of gazpacho soup to wash it all down. The textures were all different. Fabulous! I ordered vegetables in noodles with red prawns from Asia. The presentation of each dish was a work of art. 2 waiters came, the noodles and vegetables were in a salad bowl with an upturned dish over them. The second waiter had a small tray of prawns which he turned on its side to release the juices onto the rim of the bowl. With that the first waiter had released what looked like liquid ice onto the rim and it magnified the aroma of the prawn juice and created a wonderful spectacle, then he lifted the upturned dish to present the food underneath. It all tasted exquisite. We also had the pulled duck, salmon sashimi, heart shaped marguerite pizza - it was the best pizza we ever tasted so ended up ordering a second one. Desserts were all fabulous, had the passion fruit mousse, tiramisu, ice cream selection with what looked and tasted like crushed Coca Cola ice chips on top and a brownie with pistachio ice cream. As other reviews noted, it would be beneficial to have the dessert menu in other languages other than Spanish. The waiters were all male, middle aged and very knowledgeable of their profession, they were amazing. Would highly recommend Cook and Travel. More

The Roadhouse

Ratings and reviews, food and ambience, location and contact.

We have been visiting Salou for several years as a family if ranging ages. We have always visited Roadhouse due to the guaranteed quality of food and drinks, atmosphere and effort and attention to detail displayed by the staff. We were only over for four... days on this visit but managed a couple of meals at Roadhouse. Many Thanks to all the staff, we’ll see you again soon. More

We had a lovely meal at roadhouse. I tried two cocktails they were really strong but thought they could of been more decorative in looks for the price. The food was lovely the children also enjoyed it but could done with more items on the... kids menu like the tacos as my children had to order off the adult menu for choice. Food was nice though . Only visited once as was £100 euro for five of us and that’s like a treat price really More

food and travel salou

Like many others, tried to turn up on Monday and wasn’t able to get in, even outside wasn’t an option so we prebooked at the door for Wednesday. Arrived half hour early, which wasn’t a problem for them and they immediately seated us, taking our... drink order soon after. We initially shared the XL pina colada which was, like all cocktails at the roadhouse freshly prepared and very very good. Plenty of staff around, of which any one of them would respond to drinks and food orders, very attentive but the place did get extremely busy later on and were advising people to wait for tables and/or food orders for brief periods but for me that’s a positive just to set expectations. For mains we both had sirloin steak, cooked to absolute perfection to order of medium-rare. Chips were great quality also, not the frozen French fries you get most other places. The blue cheese dip was lovely, as was the pepper sauce, the overall portion size was large, we both left some chips as we wanted dessert. So, dessert I had the salted caramel cheesecake which was with ice cream, very very good. My other half went for the hot cookie, which was freshly made and made it a double. Was a bit much after such a large main but I saved the day and helped her finish it. We then moved to the bar to keep drinking. Word of warning, if you order a Morgan’s spiced and coke like we did, expecting an easy drink between cocktails be warned it’s a large double shot of alcohol so the 8 euro price tag is warranted but you may want to order a large coke with it instead. Entertainment on the night was also great, the gent was very talented and offered his own spin of multiple well known songs of various artists over the last few decades including Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Blink-182, ZZ-Top, Johnny Cash and many more. Would absolutely recommend visiting, even if you can only get in for drinks and enjoy the entertainment from about 8:30. More

This was our second time to visit Salou and during both trips we spent most of our holidays dining in The Roadhouse. The food is absolutely delicious and they make the most beautiful cocktails. The atmosphere is electric and all the staff are so welcoming... and warm, especially Johnny who makes sure to personally go around to everyone and check in with them. He also adds that personal touch by remembering you from previous visits. There is live music every night, the restaurant is clean and the service is top notch!A must if visiting Salou! More

We visited twice in 2 days, I think that says it all. The food was absolutely delicious and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We were served by owner Johnny who could not have been more attentive and accommodating. We ordered the nachos and... wing and rib combo which were cooked to perfection, the meat fell right off the bone. The full Mexican burger, rodeo house burger and tacos were amazing aswell. This was our second visit to Salou and this was the best restaurant we’ve been to, I couldn’t recommend it more! More

Recently visited this restaurant as a family of 4 and glad we did. Being honest from the front, it doesn't look much. Nothing flashy, it looks like the typical Spanish shop front with the standard mirror finish metal with writing on it above the the... big windows but inside you are transformed to an old style american 'Roadhouse' with a modern twist. Great vibes. Booking in advance is highly recommended as this is an extremely popular restaurant as we found out. We was fortunate to turn up at the right time the evening we did as somebody had not turned up for their reservation and it was kindly given to us instead, however many people after us were unfortunately turned away due to being fully booked. That being said, we had nachos and a combo starter for 2 which consisted of barbecue ribs and wings, mozzarella sticks, cheese and jalapeño croquettes, diced potatoes deep fried potatoes and bruchettas. It was amazing! Great flavours and cooked to perfection even our fussy 7 year old joined in to demolish the starters! We all had burgers for main, our eldest and I opted for the rodeo burger whilst the wife chose the Mexican burger. Our youngest had the kids menu meal of sausage and beans. Again everybody demolished their food whilst everyone made satisfied moans and groans at how good the food tasted, the only negative,if you can call it a negative, is that we was all too full to sample a dessert 😥 which was a shame because picture of the desserts looked amazing. But with four completely empty plates and completely stuffed bellies we just couldn't fit them in. The Mrs washed food down with 2 strawberry daiquiris which also tasted amazing whilst I opted for 2 pints of draught Madri. The total bill was €107 and worth every cent. Highly recommended this restaurant if your after some excellent tasting food that is cooked perfectly! More

We had been to The Roadhouse previously and were really looking forward to returning after a gap of two years due to the Covid situation...we were not disappointed! The food was outstanding as always, the service was spot on, attentive without being overbearing, and the... place has a great atmosphere. I'm vegetarian but I had a great starter and main while my wife enjoyed the fillet steak cooked to perfection. The desserts were amazing as was the wine which was really good value. The Roadhouse is very popular so I would recommend booking in advance as there were a lot of people who turned up without booking but couldn't get tables. Anyway, make sure you visit, we can't wait to return soon. More

We spent a wonderful last evening of our holiday in the Roadhouse .We enjoyed an amazing sharer starter of ribs n wings and patatas bravas and other yummy bits .Coctails looked amazing and the young ones in our group were delighted with choices .I enjoyed... a lovley dry white wine whilst hubby opted for Roadhouse own ale .Brewski as its known .That went down well also. All ordered a different burger from the many choices on offer .Small touches like asking how would you like your pattie cooked made it a much more personal experience. Portions were big and the chips were hand cut .We were to full for a desert ,but noticed they looked amazing .We were treated to some live music from a talented young man .The staff were polite and took time to chat to you . I wish I hadn't left my visit till the last evening as I would have liked to squeeze in another visit . More

We have read many reviews of restaurants and bars offering food in salou and this one always came out one of the best , I can see why. As a family of 4 adults and a 3 year old we wasn't holding much hope of... getting in this evening as we hadn't booked and was pleasantly surprised to get a table , we had to go back in 50 minutes , so we went for a drink around the corner . As we went back we was warmly welcomed and quickly shown to our table where we had a great view of the acoustic guirarist while we chose our drinks . The menu isn't overly complicated and is easy to navigate and make your choice. Plenty of options for the vegetarians in our group . Food came out quite swiftly and was really nicely presented. We had breads , olives , balsamic, ailoi , guacamole for starters and 3 vegy burgers and one meat burger . Food was excellent, really enjoyed the breads and aoli , guacamole dips . Burgers are great , the fries are excellent. If I'm being really picky I wish the balsamic dip was a bit more flavoursome and the black olives would be replaced with a large stuffed queen olive with a little marinade. Like I say I'm being really picky here as it's hard to fault anything at all and that's just my personal taste . All in all great food topped off with fantastic service from really friendly people. 10 out of 10 , will always go back when in salou More

Visited twice as it was so good. You need to book as it gets busy but it’s so worth it. For my daughters birthday they decorated the table and especially made her a gluten free lactose free cake. Great atmosphere, tasty food and live music.... I really enjoyed my gluten free ribs, burger and chips and I even enjoyed a gluten free beer. We can’t wait to return in August. 5 stars! More

We visited the roadhouse twice on our trip to Salou, the first night we did not book the table and got a walk-in, the second night we had booked ahead. First visit We arrived and asked for a walk in, this was facilitated by the... owner who said we could have the table for an hour. This suited us so we took it and sat down to look at the menu. The menu was vast and it is a real family orientated place- lots of choice for big groups. We ordered a sharer platter and two cokes. The food came out quickly. The platter was an ok size, the meats were good but the bockwurst and sauces were not the nicest, just not to our taste. The place was packed, with live music, and staff were run off their feet but our service wasnt impacted, our bill for the platter and 2 drinks came to approx €60, for the amount of food we got vs what we paid it was expensive, however we decided to book in again as we saw other people getting burgers and they looked lovely! Second visit We arrived 30 mins or so early as we wanted to have a drink at the bar, I got a mocktail (bit pricey it was €7.50 for a slushie really) and my husband had a draught beer. The owner came over a while later to tell us our table was ready, we sat down and had a look at the menu. I ordered a nashville burger with chips, husband order a smokie burger with mac and cheese. The burgers were ok, the chicken one was quite bland and lacked flavour, the parmesan chips were lovely though. My husband said his burger was grand, but the mac and cheese was dry and was more like chopped up pieces of spaghetti with cheese. On this occasion we found the service to be a bit slapdash, waiting staff doubling up on asking us if we asked for our bill, but again the owner was passing and said they were down staff and a cover had just arrived. The bill for 1 mocktail and 2 beers and two burgers came to €57, which we found a bit on the pricier side. The waiter who took our payment was lovely and made a good effort. Glad we got to try this place out but would not be in a rush back. More

Dropped in for a delicious lunch yesterday and was wowed by both the food and the service. A group of three of us had one sharing platter to start, followed by a burger each and we were utterly stuffed. The portion sizes are generous and... the quality is excellent. You can tell that everything is prepared fresh on site. The strawberry daiquiri that I coupled with my meal was packed full of strawberries - almost a meal in itself! I wish I had time during my visit to go back and try the steak as the photos of them look amazing on their Facebook. When I return to visit my friends I will definitely be coming back. Thanks to the team for excellent meal! More

Staff immediately welcoming and a warm feeling upon entering. I do recommend booking via their Facebook page (they get back to you very quickly) as it does get busy and is popular, though they were very accommodating and offered alternatives for those who didn’t book.... Both my partner and I ordered the fillet steak, extremely good value for money and the portion size was massive. Extremely tasty steak cooked to perfection and we both agreed it was the best steak we’d ever had. Really nice and relaxed atmosphere, tasty and unique cocktails which you wouldn’t get anywhere else in Salou. If I had to pick any place to recommend it would be Roadhouse, couldn’t fault any aspect of our evening here and you can really tell the owner takes pride in the business which is nice to see :) More

Me and my family went to The Roadhouse during our short stay in Salou and it was lovely. Excellent food and very friendly staff! Definitely recommend if you want some quality food. Me and 2 of my other family members had burgers and they were... lovely, they ask you how you would like your steak and they did deliver! My other family member had mac and cheese. She enjoyed it too. Very family friendly, large portions and overall a great experience. If you’re on a budget and want a cheaper meal maybe don’t go here, but it was good quality so we didn’t mind supporting their business and paying that much. (It was around 15€ per burger meal) More

Was in Salou with family for a weeks holiday and decided to try this restaurant out to celebrate sons 21st. Everyone had steak, mostly fillet, and all I can say is we all thought they were amazing. Unfortunately I can't say that about the service... and that's the reason I've not given 5 stars. When we had finished our meal it was about 15 minutes before we got our bill despite asking a few different members of staff. Would still return though if I was ever back in Salou 😀 More

Popular prescription drug Ozempic seized by Cincinnati CBP

CINCINNATI– Many people know Ozempic for its prescribed use in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Over the last few years, the medication has grown in popularity for alternative means of weight loss with incredible results. Ozempic is Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Cincinnati recently seized 11 shipments packed full of the pre-filled prescription medication.

Ozempic

Officers at the Port of Cincinnati were conducting inspections on freight out of Colombia when they discovered shipments containing pre-filled injection pens containing Ozempic. A total of 11 FDA-regulated Ozempic shipments have been seized so far this calendar year at the Port of Cincinnati, with the first shipment detected in February. Each shipment originated in Colombia and were destined to New York, Massachusetts, and Texas. Most of the shipments held over 100 pre-filled injection pens. Had all 11 shipments been legitimate with FDA approval, they would have had a combined value of $887,000.

Officers reached out to FDA to confirm the drug cannot be imported into the United States without going through the proper steps and presenting the required documentation. Unfortunately, very few online pharmacies are compliant with the U.S. pharmacy standards. This poses health risks to consumers who purchase what they believe is a genuine product at a much lower cost. The product they receive may be inferior. Risks posed by using medications from unfamiliar sources include unknown ingredients, unusual side effects, and lack of effectiveness of the product.

“Prescription drugs that are smuggled from outside the U.S., particularly injectable products that should be sterile, can present a serious health risk to those who use them. The drugs have not undergone the proper import processes and may contain unknown or dangerous ingredients,” said Dan Solis, FDA Assistant Commissioner for import operations. “We will continue to be vigilant at ports of entry to interdict these potentially dangerous products, preventing them from reaching U.S. customers and protecting the public health.”

“Collaborative work with FDA has proven to help combat the soaring sales in E-commerce of illegal medications from overseas entities that fail to abide by the rules set in place,” said LaFonda D. Sutton-Burke, Director Field Operations-Chicago. “One of CBP’s mission priorities is to facilitate lawful trade. Stopping illegal shipments of Ozempic saves consumers a substantial amount of money and potentially dangerous health risks.”

CBP enforces laws for partner agencies including FDA. CBP works jointly with the FDA to combat the importation of illegal medications and beauty products that pose health risks for consumers. If you would like to find out more information, the FDA provides  guidance  on how human drugs can be legitimately imported into the United States.

The Best Kitchen Mats, According to Home Cooks and Bakers

Portrait of Bella Druckman

Unless you’ve worked in a professional kitchen — or perhaps fancy you could after binge-watching The Bear — you might be wondering what exactly a kitchen mat is. It’s not a baking mat, one of those handy Silpat mats that go on top of sheet pans when making cookies. Instead, it’s a cushiony, cloudlike mat that home cooks and professional chefs alike place in high-traffic areas in their kitchen to support their feet and backs while spending hours in front of the sink and stove. (Not to mention that it protects floors from ingredient stains.)

“Standing on a softer surface absorbs and cushions a lot of movement,” recipe developer and cookbook author Erin Jeanne McDowell says, so finding the right kitchen mat — with your desired dimensions, thickness, and overall look — can save your body from aches and pains. That’s why I interviewed a number of home cooks and bakers, cookbook authors, and recipe developers about the mats they use during their full-time days in the kitchen. These mats have withstood the trials and joys of cooking from home, notably hours in front of the stove, dogs with the zoomies, and children with food in their mouths. So whether you prefer a visually appealing mat or just need some extra foot and back support, here you’ll find the best kitchen mats to stand on, according to cooking and baking experts.

KitchenClouds Kitchen Mat

Material : PVC foam Thickness : 0.47 inches and 0.75 inches Size : 17.3 inches x 28 inches, 17.3 inches x 39 inches, 17.3 inches x 60 inches, 20 inches x 32 inches

Recipe developer and cookbook author Caroline Chambers never used a kitchen mat outside of test kitchens for her catering business. That is until she renovated her kitchen and swapped out her cushy LVP flooring for some unforgiving yet visually appealing Saltillo tiles. “At the end of the day of a big cooking day, even at the end of cooking dinner, I noticed that my lower back hurt, my knees would hurt, and I was like, What the fuck is happening? ” she says. It was time for a kitchen mat.

Chambers purchased the KitchenClouds anti-fatigue mat, which fit her support needs but not the aesthetic of her newly renovated kitchen. So she paired it with this rug from Loloi that has anti-slip material on the bottom that keeps it from sliding around. “I can be in the kitchen for 12 hours straight and not sit down once on a really busy development day, and I don’t feel it in my joints or in my back anymore,” she says. And whenever there’s a spill (which is inevitable with three boys who cook with her all the time), she cleans it with a little bit of Folex carpet cleaner .

American Floor Mats Smooth Top Anti-Fatigue Mats

Material : solid vinyl top surface and foam sponge base Thickness : 0.5 inches or 0.75 inches Size : multiple

If you were to enter McDowell’s kitchen, you’d see four kitchen mats that cover almost her entire working space. They’re the fruit of a deep internet search for custom floor mats and can be ordered to suit your preferred thickness and square footage. If you’re like McDowell and are looking for a kitchen-mat set that’s unique to your kitchen, I’d say these are your best bet.

McDowell opted for the 0.75-inch thickness and says, “Even when I shoot videos and photography in my kitchen and I place heavy tripods or other equipment on the mats, those items leave an impression only temporarily. The mats always bounce back!” Not to mention they protect her feet, back, and hardwood floors. And as McDowell says, “A kitchen mat that moves under you is worthless in my opinion,” so these don’t budge unless she picks them up herself. They’ve seen extreme use — “I’m regularly in the kitchen for eight hours or more a day. I also have regular help in the kitchen, and other folks, photographers and videographers, regularly working on them, too,” she says — and the mats only ripped when a mover was bringing in her new fridge. She cleans them with a steam mop or disinfectant spray and then lets them dry in the sun.

KMAT Kitchen Mat 2-Piece Set

Material : PVC material Thickness : 0.4 inches or 0.47 inches Size : 17.3 x 47 inches and 17.3 x 29 inches

Unlike the American Floor Mats option, this kitchen mat can’t be customized to the size of your kitchen. However, it’s the perfect size for culinary content creator Stephanie Rutherford ’s space. She’s had two surgeries on her left foot, so even though this is one of thinnest and most affordable mats on the list, it still helps alleviate her pain from working in the kitchen for six to eight hours a day. The mats work so well in part because she’s placed them in the most trafficked parts of her space — along the island and in front of her mixer — and doesn’t move them around unless she’s cleaning the floors. And while they’ve lost a battle to some errant food dye, the mats are mostly stain free and can be cleaned with a wet paper towel. One thing to note: The mats wear down with time, so Rutherford ordered a brand new set after a few years of use.

Gorilla Grip Anti-Fatigue Cushioned Kitchen Floor Mat

Material : foam Thickness : 0.5 inches or 0.75 inches Size : 17 inches x 24 inches, 20 inches x 32 inches, 20 inches x 39 inches, 20 inches x 48 inches, 20 inches x 60 inches, 24 inches x 70 inches, 17 inches x 24 inches/17 inches x 48 inches, and 17 inches x 29 inches/17 inches x 59 inches

While a kitchen mat hasn’t made our list of best gifts for home cooks (yet!), recipe developer and culinary content creator Justine Doiron received hers as a gift from her fiancé. “He got it for me when I was just starting to really take cooking seriously, when we were living in Hoboken four years ago, because my feet and ankles were hurting,” she says. Unlike some of the other experts I interviewed, Doiron only has one kitchen mat, which she places under the sink to provide cushioning when she does dishes. However, you can also buy this kitchen mat in a set of two and place them in your most trafficked cooking areas, like Rutherford does. When Doiron isn’t standing at the sink, she’s wearing her “ cooking grandma slippers ,” which provide the same support as her kitchen mat. And while she and Chambers share the same unfavorable opinion about their kitchen mats’ appearances, Doiron puts hers in the closet when she has company over rather than topping it with a rug — “It’s a utility product, you know?” she says.

GelPro Designer Comfort Mat Tweed - Antique White

Material : foam Thickness : 0.75 inches Size : 20 inches x 32 inches, 20 inches x 48 inches, 20 inches x 72 inches, 30 inches x 72 inches, and 30 inches x 108 inches

If you’d like a kitchen mat that doesn’t sacrifice on appearance or support, consider fashion designer and culinary creator Peter Som ’s kitchen mat of choice. He purchased two of them — one for the stove and one for the sink — in anticipation of long hours in the kitchen working on his upcoming cookbook. The mats have a textured, woven tweed look to them that he says gives them “a bit more of a home feel, whereas if you’re doing a solid color, that usually feels a bit more industrial.”

The mat wipes off easily and has maintained its antique white appearance, which is important for Som, who is admittedly “sort of a messy cook.” And if you’re worried about tripping, there’s no need to stress: “There’s a really nice bevel along the edge that’s gentle, and that’s really good for non-trippage,” Som says.

House of Noa Nama Standing Mat

Material : High density foam with printed top fabric Thickness : 0.75 inches Size : 22 inches x 36 inches, 22 inches x 52 inches, 22 inches x 72 inches, and 30 inches x 108 inches

For another kitchen mat that challenges the industrial appearance norms, there’s recipe developer and food creator Christine Han ’s mat, which she says is in perfect shape after about three years of use. She has two, which she stands on during her four to five hours in the kitchen on a daily basis and which she says “have stood the test of time.” She was looking for a kitchen mat that would both support her feet and catch food she dropped on the floor. She landed on the standing mats from House of Noa, which she describes as “supple” and are completely wipeable. “I cook with food coloring, I cook with kimchi, red-hot liquid that stains, and I’ve been able to get all of that out,” she says. Though the pattern she has is currently unavailable, House of Noa offers a variety of kitchen mats in different colors and patterns.

Williams Sonoma WellnessMats® Anti-Fatigue Mat - Original Collection

Material : engineered polyurethane material  Thickness : 0.75 inches Size : 3 feet x 2 feet and 6 feet x 2 feet

If you’d like to emulate a professional kitchen in your home, I’d recommend considering chef and Strategist kitchen and dining editor Kiki Aranita’s mat. “Is it fashionable? No. Do my knees care about fashion? No,” she says. “It’s also so much better looking than those commercial kitchen mats with the big holes, so I don’t mind its appearance.” While the mat has one of the higher price tags on this list, Aranita says hers has held up for the past decade, so it’s an investment that should last years — “I clean it by wiping it down with all-purpose spray and a rag, and it’s still like new,” she says. Like Doiron, Aranita finds the mat is most useful for long stationary tasks. For her, that looks like breaking down large, complicated fish, and for her husband, it’s rolling out and shaping pasta for hours on end.

Ruggable Architectural Digest Nerissa Teal & Gold Rug

Material : polyester with a polyurethane water-resistant barrier Thickness : 6mm and 13mm Size : 2.5 feet x 7 feet, 2.5 feet x 10 feet, 2.5 feet x 12 feet

If you’re lucky enough to have a long kitchen like culinary-content creator and cookbook author Jon Kung, Ruggable’s runner rugs are one of your best bets. The mat comes in four variations, two of which are relevant to this article: Flatwoven Standard and Flatwoven Cushioned. Kung has the former because the cushioned version is not available in the dimensions that work for his kitchen — 2.5 feet by 12 feet — but he says the standard version “helps with your joints, your knees, your back, all of that stuff. Just a little extra padding in areas where you’re standing a lot is just very helpful.” However, the more padding the better, so I’d recommend purchasing the cushioned version if the dimensions work for your kitchen.

Unlike Chambers’s mat-rug combo, Kung’s mat has the benefit of the cushion part and the rug part attaching with Velcro — a level of convenience that’s reflected in the higher price tag. However, if it’s within your budget, the Ruggable is ideal because everything stays together until you want to throw the rug part in the washing machine after a big spill. And while Kung hasn’t put it in the washing machine yet (it’s hard to find a machine that will fit a 12-foot runner), he’s found that a vacuum and carpet cleaner work just fine. “I’ve got two very energetic pit bulls that have knocked things off of the counter and onto it before — I imagine that it’s almost like a child equivalent — so they’re pretty resilient, and I think they’re designed to be that way,” he says.

Six Senses Just Opened a New Urban Retreat in Kyoto — Here’s What It’s Like to Stay

The slumber-supporting rooms, foliage-studded courtyards, and sanctuary spa are a masterclass in Zen.

Activities and amenities, family-friendly offerings, accessibility and sustainability, how to get the most value out of your stay.

Courtesy of Six Senses Kyoto

Well-known for its heritage and culture, Kyoto brims with Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples, and well-preserved districts. Despite its deep roots and proliferation of historic landmarks, the ancient Edo capital has indeed evolved since its imperial heyday. The current cultural framework looks different than it did even a few decades back. Today, Instagrammable matcha shops sit astride kaiseki restaurants and artisan studios specializing in kintsugi, and soft serve joints line the main street of Arashiyama.

Situated in the Higashiyama Ward, the new Six Senses Kyoto, which opened its doors in late April 2024, blends past and present in the most exquisite way — honoring its historical surroundings, rolling out industry-leading sustainability initiatives, and creating a serene sanctuary for guests to unwind after temple hopping (or skipping the sightseeing and just blissing out all day).

Inspired by the Heian period — the golden age of art and culture in Kyoto — but designed by Singapore-based BLINK Design Group with a more contemporary, eco-conscious lens, the hotel epitomizes a Zen urban retreat. It’s luxurious yet relaxed and modern, with nods to millennia-old traditions that give it a rich sense of place and soul.

Guests are welcomed with tea, Japanese sweets (determined by the current micro-season), and Zuko (rubbing incense powder), a purifying Buddhist ritual meant to cleanse the spirit and set the tone for a halcyon stay. The five-star property doesn’t demand silence or formality despite the palpable sense of tranquility. The doting staff is warm and always smiling. And there's an undercurrent of levity and whimsy.

Stunning in its simplicity and attention to detail, the biophilic lobby — which opens onto a central courtyard teeming with greenery, water, and rocks  — features stone floors, light wood, and custom artwork. Hanging behind the reception desks, a folding screen made of local Rakuyaki tiles evokes the silhouette of the sacred Mount Kurama, the birthplace of Reiki healing. On the opposite wall, a modern interpretation of scrolls of frolicking animals nods to the first manga.

Folksy fox masks guard each of the 81 luxurious rooms — and cleverly light up to indicate a do-not-disturb preference. Sounds of joy reverberate from the Grow With Six Senses kids club. The restaurants serve fresh, locally sourced cuisine that resonates with applaudable sustainability efforts. The Earth Lab allows guests to connect to local culture, learn, and get creative. Nowhere is the balance of pampering and peacefulness more apparent than the spa, a sanctum of holistic self-care capable of transforming even the most tightly wound traveler into a Zen master.

Here, everything you need to know about Six Senses Kyoto.

Six Senses Kyoto

  • Sustainability is more than just a buzzword; it’s part of the DNA of the hotel.
  • The cutting-edge spa has a watsu pool, biohacking recovery lounge, heated pools, saunas, steam rooms, and an Alchemy Bar.
  • Guests can participate in immersive cultural activities like incense making at the Earth Lab.
  • Bartenders mix cocktails with Japanese whisky and creative mocktails at the emerald-hued jewel box bar.

Every room is consciously designed for comfort and style. All the accommodations overlook nature and have soaking tubs, enhancing the relaxing vibe. One detail I loved is that beautiful panels hide televisions, so you get a tech-free feeling without sacrificing Netflix to beat the jetlag. This aligns with the brand’s portfolio-wide mission to promote a better snooze, as do the bespoke mattresses, temperature-regulating pillows, and organic cotton linens.

Like the rest of the property, peppered throughout the rooms are moments of surprise and delight, such as wooden blocks that spin behind the beds. Care and attention go into every carefully considered detail — even the snacks. The house-made lemon cookies, beet soy sauce crackers, and sweet potato chips hit the spot when you’re feeling peckish.

We stayed in a Premier Suite Garden on the ground floor, a spectacular space with a private Japanese garden for sitting in stillness or napping on the outdoor couch. I will be dreaming of the stand-alone soaking tub for years to come.

Ideal for multi-general families or groups, the Penthouse Suite flaunts three bedrooms (a rarity for a city hotel) and expansive living areas with sweeping views.

Calling the cuisine farm-to-table doesn’t do it justice: The food here is hyperlocal, with virtually everything either grown on-site or sourced from regenerative farms and fisheries within a six-mile radius.

A celebration of the 24 micro-seasons of the ancient Japanese calendar, Sekki, the all-day restaurant helmed by executive chef and Kyoto native Hiroki Shishikura, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The bountiful morning buffet is full of pickled vegetables, fresh-baked pastries, housemade granola and yogurt, and fruit. Guests can also order a la carte dishes. I recommend the dashi maki tamago , a Kyoto-style take on an omelet, and the roasted sweet potato. To wash it down? Pressed juices and zesty shots. In the evening, miso-marinaded Tamba pork and Kyoto wagyu are meaty standouts from the land section of the menu. Veg-forward options include roasted cauliflower with a vinegared leek and turnip tapenade and stir-fried greens from the garden. Seafood fans will happily dive into a plate of scallops with homegrown Manganji peppers and enoki mushrooms. The adjacent café is the spot for coffee, tea, housemade kombucha, and freshly baked pastries during the day.

The second location of the acclaimed, Osaka-based Sushi Oga allows patrons to try an omakase (chef’s choice) of flawlessly cut fish that sits elegantly atop signature red vinegar sushi rice.

In contrast to the rest of the light and airy property, the Nine Tails bar is undoubtedly a visual departure. Jewel tones and dim lighting create a seductive atmosphere for grown-up guests to sip Japanese whisky, creative cocktails, and mocktails.

A chalkboard sign in the lobby details the daily activities, which range from yoga and mat Pilates to sound healing and sustainability tours to origami and Sashiko stitching.

One of the most interesting spaces at the hotel, the Earth Lab, invites guests to partake in interactive cultural workshops — including learning the time-honored Japanese art of Shodo calligraphy and zero-waste furoshiki wrapping.

Complimentary wooden Coco-Mat bicycles are waiting out front for guests keen to explore the neighborhood.

The spa is, without a doubt, the star of a property with so many high points. The bathhouses, separated by gender, call to mind traditional onsen rituals. I spent an hour sweating it out in the sauna and steam room, floating in the hot pools, and cooling off in the cold plunge before my holistic massage.

On the cutting-edge side of things, diagnostic health screening machines give guests data about sleep and stress in minutes. Experts then use the analysis to recommend tailor-made programs. The tech-forward biohacking lounge, equipped with vibration therapy chairs and LED masks, is excellent for a quick wellness hit to combat jetlag and promote recovery or, as most spa-goers do, as an addition to lengthier, bespoke journeys that might comprise shiatsu, a 24k gold facial, a pearl-infused body mask, and acupuncture. There’s also a watsu (aquatic bodywork) pool — the only one in Kyoto. The treatment rooms are impeccably designed and perfectly serene. After rituals, the relaxation room encourages guests to sip tea and move the rake around the miniature Zen sand gardens.

The Alchemy Bar, a hallmark across the portfolio, offers guests the chance to craft DIY beauty products with ingredients plucked from the hotel’s garden. Who wouldn’t want to bring home an exfoliating green tea body scrub? The boutique stocks luxury all-natural skincare lines, handwoven kimonos, and incense from Tenkhodou, a family-run business dating back four generations that supplies ceremonial aromatics to the most sacred temples in Kyoto.

Finding a hotel that feels so polished and peaceful yet caters to families is rare. The way that the property considers its youngest guests impressed me tremendously. Everyone was so sweet and thoughtful to our boys, chatting up Miles about his day and latest drawing and playing peek-a-boo with Leo.

The kids club, called Grow with Six Senses, is on the ground floor and open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Clearly, a parent had a say in things because it’s right down the hall from Nine Tails and Sekki and open late enough for mom and dad to enjoy drinks and dinner with a side of adult conversation. The room itself looks like one of those brilliantly designed playrooms you see on Instagram, but don’t imagine anyone having it in real life. Think wooden toys, books, puzzles galore, yoga mats, and this beautiful butterfly tree sculpture to spur imagination.

Perhaps the most magical element is an interactive play area with a slide and boulder-shaped pillows that mirror the green spaces outside the window. For kids ages 5 to 12, it’s a drop-off situation (hence the suggestion for a date night), but a parent or guardian must accompany younger children. Still — we brought our 3-year-old, and he had the time of his life.

The hotel is designed and built in compliance with local accessibility standards, with one accessible room available.

Sustainability is a driving force behind the Six Senses brand — especially true of its Kyoto outpost. Conceptualized with a profound respect for people and the planet, nearly every aspect of the LEED silver-certified hotel — from the materials and practices used in the construction process to implementing plastic-free policies and to the guest experiences — reflects values of social and environmental responsibility. Visitors can participate in eco-conscious activities like painting Sensu (folding fans) with natural pigments colored by food scraps at the Earth Lab. Kitchen waste is also composted and used as fertilizers for the garden. Part of the hotel’s revenue directly funds forestry conservation and education.

The Higashiyama Ward provides a more relaxing, residential-feeling alternative to the city center. Its narrow lanes are dotted with tea houses, kaiseki restaurants, and pottery shops like POJ Studio . Sanjusangen-do Temple and the Kyoto National Museum are within walking distance of the Six Senses Kyoto. And it’s easy to hop in a car to visit the many other must-see attractions.

Cherry blossom season draws travelers worldwide, which rolls into Golden Week in early May. Book outside this period if you’re looking for fewer crowds and more wallet-friendly rates.

The Six Senses Kyoto is part of IHG’s luxury and lifestyle portfolio. That comes with the perks of the IHG One Rewards loyalty program.
