Lethbridge is a city in southern Alberta . It is a commercial hub for the many smaller farming and ranching communities in the surrounding area . It is quiet and on the small side, but has a friendly population. Lethbridge has about 102,000 people in its metro area (2016), and that number is growing fast. The natural beauty of the area is in its starkness. The "coulees" are a valley formed by erosion. The Oldman River runs through this interesting landscape. This valley provides some shelter from the wind, which can be quite strong at almost any time of the year.

Before European settlement of Lethbridge the area was under the control of various Indigenous nations, including most recently the Kainai Nation (called the "Blood Tribe" in older writing) part of the Blackfoot Confederacy. In the late 19th century the main food source and spiritual icon of the Blackfoot peoples, the bison (buffalo), were being wiped out by White American hunters. The Blackfoot turned the Canadian government for help and a signed treaty in 1875 that relinquished control of Southern Alberta in exchange for food rations, medicines, and help to learn farming and ranching. These promises were never fully met by the government, but the Blackfoot were no longer in a position to resist, and the government meanwhile invited thousands of non-indigenous people into the region with the promise of free land and a subsidized railway connection to Eastern Canada. But before the Canadian government could established full control over the area, a booming whiskey trade took root, with Americans illegally importing "whiskey" (poisonous and impure moonshine) to sell to the Blackfoot. One of their main bases was "Fort Whoop-Up" in present-day Lethbridge. The Canadian government created the Mounted Police and famously marched them west in 1878, supposedly to stop the whiskey trade, but also to keep an eye on the Blackfoot.

Soon after this a major coal mining operation started to develop in the coulee regions of Coalbanks. Coalbanks was renamed Lethbridge in 1885. Lethbridge received city status in 1906.

During World War II, many Japanese Canadians and German POWs were interned in Lethbridge. After the war many stayed having established a new life. As a result, you'll see some influences of Japanese and German culture blended with the surrounding Ukrainian, Dutch, Mormon, Native and Hutterite cultures.

Today Lethbridge is undergoing a strong economic boom and as a result many new businesses are cropping up. There is also a large population boom but many businesses are still looking for people to work because there are still so few people to work.

On foot or bike

You can walk or bike around in some stretches of the city, but trying to walk or bike from south Lethbridge to west Lethbridge is a daunting task as you will have to walk Whoop-Up Drive, which translates walking or biking down a hill, into the coulees and then walkingor biking up a steep hill. However parts of Lethbridge are tailor-made for walking or biking around to explore, such as downtown Lethbridge and the actual coulees themselves. The parks around Henderson Lake and Nicholas Sheran Lake provide pleasant spaces for recreation.

Violent crime is extremely rare in Lethbridge, but there are probably a few places you should avoid at night for fear of being hassled for money or robbed. Although safe during the day, several robberies have happened at the Galt Gardens at night. Similarly, you might want to avoid walking downtown near the Coal Banks Inn at night if you are alone. All in all however, Lethbridge is a very safe city and the probability of a crime being committed against you is very low.

Alberta on the Plate

Situated along the Oldman River in the southern part of Alberta, Lethbridge is surrounded by picturesque landscape of vast prairies, rugged badlands, and the Rocky Mountains. Only a day trip away from four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, there are hundreds of years of heritage waiting to be discovered.

Agriculture is deeply woven into the fabric of Lethbridge’s identity. The city’s fertile lands, commitment to research, and dedication to sustainable practices continue to shape its agricultural landscape and contribute to the province’s agricultural success. Known as the “Breadbasket of Canada,” the Lethbridge region boasts fertile soil, favorable climate conditions, and a strong agricultural tradition. With the incredible bounty being grown and raised in the area, it has also become the heart of agri-food production and processing in Alberta, with major processors like McCains, PepsiCo, and Maple Leaf Foods having facilities situated within the city and surrounding area.

That focus on agriculture and food production pours into other aspects of the city’s culture, including the development of the brand new  Agri-Food Hub and Trade Centre .  This world-class facility boasts 268,000 square feet of multifunctional space with state-of-the-art design and technology. With a beautiful view overlooking Henderson Lake, the facility is perfectly situated for visitors to connect and access in-depth local knowledge, stories, and education, and to visit nearby agricultural operations for hands-on experience.  The trade show floor even has outside access doors large enough to bring in farming equipment with ease!

Its name was created from the Japanese words Ni (from Nihon meaning Japan), ka from Kanada or Canada, and Yuko, which translates as “friendship” to mean “Japan-Canada friendship.”

WHERE TO STAY

About the city of lethbridge.

galt museum lethbridge

Life in Lethbridge strikes a balance between the feel of a close-knit small community and the services and amenities of a growing urban centre. Lethbridge is located in the southern portion of the western province of Alberta, Canada and is the centre of a trading area that serves nearly 342,000 people in Alberta, British Columbia and the State of Montana.

Located only one hour north of the Alberta-Montana border, Lethbridge is closer to the U.S. market than any other city in Alberta. Lethbridge is also easily accessible to major markets across Western Canada by road, rail and air. Our proximity to the Foothills of the Rocky Mountains also places us within an hour’s drive to spectacular national parks, UNESCO World Heritage sites and other major attractions.

Living in Lethbridge, you’ll find a diverse population, two modern post-secondary institutions, a thriving arts and culture scene, top-notch recreational facilities all set against a stunning natural environment within a community where collaboration is king.

Lethbridge is two hours south of Calgary, Canada’s third largest city and a major transportation hub for the region, and one hour from the U.S. border. Lethbridge’s location in the heart of southern Alberta also puts it in close proximity to premier attractions like Waterton Lakes National Park, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage Site and Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park. The Oldman River runs through the middle of the city, creating scenic coulees, verdant valley parkland and boundless recreational opportunities.

Lethbridge was established in the late 1800’s in the Oldman River valley as a coal mining community. Originally known as Coalbanks, the name officially changed to Lethbridge in October 1885 in honor of William Lethbridge, an original shareholder in the Northwest Coal and Navigation Company (NCNC).

A local lumber industry emerged when the Galt family, owners of the Drift Mine No. 1 and operator’s of the NCNC, developed a sawmill directly beneath where the High Level Bridge stands today. One of the contributing factors for the “coal town’s” development into a regional servicing hub was the Canadian Pacific Railway’s decision to relocate the Crowsnest line division point from Fort Macleod to Lethbridge.

This was made possible by the construction of the High Level Bridge across the Oldman River valley. By the early 1900’s, agriculture had begun to replace coal mining as the dominant economic activity, and the townsite moved out of the river valley up onto the prairie.

When Lethbridge was incorporated as a city in May 1906, the community boasted a population of 2500 and a well-established downtown commercial area. Rapid growth occurred after the Second World War when increasing automobile usage spurred development to the east, north and south of the downtown.

New areas included the industrial parks on the east side of the city and commercial development east on Third Avenue and southward along Mayor Magrath Drive. By the early 1960’s, these trends had left the historic downtown somewhat isolated on the western extremity of the city and, accordingly, the commercial and cultural influence of the city center began to wane.

However, the City’s decision in the mid-1960’s to make land west of the Oldman River available for major residential development dramatically altered the City’s urban form and helped retain its relevance as the commercial and cultural heart of the community.

Every time we drive into the windy city, better known as Lethbridge, our first view from the top of the coulee is breathtaking. It’s the High-Level Bridge, which the southern Alberta city is known for, stands tall and dark against the green, gold, or white coulees (depending on the season). And we can’t help but stare at the bridge and the trains crisscrossing over the Oldman river valley.

Calgary to Lethbridge Driving Guide Feature

Lethbridge is the third largest city in Alberta and is quite spread out. Living here for over five years gave us plenty of time to explore and find the best things to do. With this guide, it’s going to be easy to have a great time during your visit to Lethbridge!

Acknowledgments

The land on which Lethbridge is located on is Treaty 7 territory and the traditional territory of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot), Nakoda  (Stoney), and  Tsuut’ina .

How to Get to Lethbridge?

Driving from Calgary to Lethbridge is a relaxing 210 km, 2-hour drive through small prairie towns with mountains and foothills on the west horizon. Tucked between the U.S. border and the Rocky Mountains, Lethbridge is a great launching pad to visit various national parks (like Waterton and Glacier), and a curious little place in its own right. Lethbridge is also 167 km from Medicine Hat (approx 1hr 45min) and approximately 300 km from Great Falls, Montana (3 hrs).

About Lethbridge

Lethbridge is split neatly into three sections by Highway #2 (Crowsnest Highway) that bisects the town north and south, as the Oldman River cuts the coulee separating east from west. That means there’s a section in Lethbridge for each point on a compass, except for the east. There’s the Westside which is west of the coulees and the river, the Northside which is north of the highway, and the Southside, which is where the downtown is situated.

Each area has its own charm and list of things to do, but the south is both the oldest and busiest part of the city, making it much denser with history, culture, and opportunities to ‘see it all.’ For most visitors, it’s easiest to stay on the south side, especially if you’ve just rolled into town on a bus and don’t have a car.

However, if you have easy access to a vehicle, there are places on both the north and west sides that are worth the drive!

Downtown Lethbridge

The Lethbridge core is easily walkable, and the historic buildings that dominate downtown make for a great atmosphere.

Downtown Lethbridge, Alberta

There’s a great sense of Canadian and Albertan history in downtown Lethbridge. Many of the buildings that came with the boom in the early 1900s are still standing, including the town’s first public library turned art-gallery. It houses the Southern Alberta Art Gallery (SAAG), the recently renovated Oliver Building, and the old Catholic Charities building (which is currently being completely renovated).

Because of this history, Lethbridge’s downtown core is more interesting and beautiful than most towns its size in western Canada, making getting acquainted a pleasure.

Whether you choose to make the hike on foot, use a bike, or make it easy on yourself and take a car, once you get down into the coulees, the city melts away, leaving you in almost undisturbed nature.

Popson Park & Cottonwood Park

Just a little past the Sundridge neighbourhood on the west side of the city, these two remarkable parks offer a serene slice of nature. Cottonwood is also one of our favourite spots in the summer to catch the sunrise in Lethbridge.

Tourism Lethbridge highlights state of the industry

LETHBRIDGE HERALD [email protected]

Tourism Lethbridge recently released its Power of Tourism infographic, where the organization highlights the state of the industry and how it has impacted Lethbridge within the past year.

Erin Crane, executive director of Tourism Lethbridge, recently told the Herald they continue to improve upon the stats they collect to keep track of the health indicators for the tourism industry within the city.

“We have a long way to go with that information. We’ve just started this process back in 2022 and it’s ever evolving,” said Crane.

She said Tourism Lethbridge is constantly looking at what stats to include and the economic impact of events is one of those, but that stat presents some challenges.

“We’re only as good as the information that we get from people and we’re really trying to work on that process. What events are happening in our city, how many people are they bringing, where are those people coming from,” said Crane.

She said they want to do more with that information by working with partners in collecting the required information to analyze it and have a better idea on how tourism is impacting the local economy.

The 2023 Power of Tourism document shows that the visitor information centre engaged with 4,273 people. Of those, 41.4 per cent were from Lethbridge while 32.5 per cent were from other parts of the province, 11.7 per cent were from the United States, 8.5 per cent were from other parts of the country, 2.3 per cent were international visitors and 3.6 per cent were from unknown origin.

Those statistics reflect an increase of 3.5 per cent compared to the previous year.

Other statistics included in the report show the Lethbridge airport experienced a 32.8 per cent increase in passengers with 42,034 going through in 2023.

Attendance at Lethbridge events shows an increase of 28.3 per cent with 262,495 attending the various events the took place within the year, resulting in an estimated economic impact of $18,901,919.

“We’re running right now a Destination Next tourism assessment survey that has gone out to our stakeholder partners and those in the tourism industry to find out how they’re feeling about tourism and what are some of those things that they want to see from us,” said Crane.

She said the results from that survey may change the look of the infographic showcased in the Power of Tourism document, but so far it is a good indicator of what is happening in the city.

Crane added that they are in communication with various industry partners about tourism strategies and the benefits of tourism for communities across the province.

“Alberta has a lofty goal of getting to a grand total of $25 billion in tourism economy by 2035 and right now we’re not even half of that, so we have a lot of growth that we need to get to over the next 10 years,” said Crane.

She said one thing she has been highlighting among their industry partners, especially their government partners, is the work that they have done around the tourism development zones.

“One of those zones is the Lethbridge to Medicine Hat zone and for the next 10 years that zone has a very high potential to help us get to that $25 billion,” said Crane.

She said some e questions that have been raised in those conversations include how to work together as a community to actualize that.

Crane mentioned one way to increase tourism within the city is by educating frontline staff about what visitors can do while here.

“We’ve been working with our attractions advisory committee around a VIP tour. VIP in our world stands for Visitor Information Provider. There’s so many of them that get asked when visitors come in about what is there to see and do in Lethbridge and sometimes that can be hard if it catches you off guard,” said Crane.

She added that sometimes people just don’t know because they recently moved here from somewhere else and the VIP tour gives them the opportunity to show them what is there to do, so next time they get asked they are able to respond with examples, and perhaps provide their feedback on a particular experience.

“We’ve partnered with the city of Lethbridge for transportation, we’re going to be meeting at Nikka Yuko Japanese garden and then we’re going to go to each one of those attractions to educate and let those frontline employees who often get asked those questions to see it first-hand and experience it,” said Crane.

She said this includes people that work at hotels, retail stores, restaurants and other industries that provide a place for visitors to stop on the way in or out of the city.

ABOUT VULCAN

Welcome to Vulcan:

Third planet from the sun, Country of Canada, Province of Alberta, County of Vulcan.

Vulcan stands proudly on the Western edge of the Canadian Badlands region of Southern Alberta. Surrounded by endless acres of wheat, canola, and barley, Vulcan is only one hour from both the cities of Calgary and Lethbridge.

Over the years, this town of just under 2,000 people has worked hard to take advantage of its name by creating a fun and unique Star Trek-related identity that makes it stand apart from any other small, prairie town.

Today, Vulcan offers a fun and unique tourism experience for visitors and Trekkies alike.

TREK STATION

This one-of-a-kind visitor information centre was built to look like a landed space station in 1998 and is home to a large collection of Star Trek Memorabilia, Gift Shop, and tourist information from around the county and province.

As you enter the building, the stars and nebula of the Trek Station’s floor-to-ceiling space murals will have you feeling that you have stepped into outer space.

You will be greeted by the Trek Station’s friendly crew members who are on hand to answer all of your questions about Vulcan’s association with Star Trek's Spock.

VULCAN TREK WEBSITE (4).png

In November 1995, a Town of Vulcan Administrator brought forward the concept of creating a space-themed tourist station to tap into the growing tourist market interested in Space Tourism, Science, and Star Trek.

The idea quickly grew into a group effort between V.A.S.T (Vulcan Association for Science and Trek), the Vulcan County Economic Development, the Vulcan & District Chamber of Commerce, and the Town of Vulcan.

The Trek Station’s official grand opening was on October 23, 1998. The Station was designed to look like a landed spaceship.   Clever landscaping and fibre optic lighting on the soffit of the center enhance the illusion.

Today thousands of people from all over this world, and beyond, make the Trek to Vulcan to visit this unique attraction. It’s not every day you see a tourist information centre shaped like a spaceship, unless, of course, you find yourself in Vulcan, Alberta.
