How to apply for Sri Lanka visa extension online – A step-by-step guide

Published: January 1, 2022 4 Comments

Sri Lanka Visa Extension Online

You can apply for a Sri Lanka visa extension from within the country from the comfort of your hotel room. The entire procedure to extend the visa is online, from application submission to payment to receiving the extension.

To prevent tourists from gathering at the immigration office in Colombo, Sri Lanka Immigration and Emigration is encouraging tourists to use their online visa extension portal.

The online visa extension portal is clean, simple and quite easy to use. It takes about 10 minutes to fill the application. About 2 working days to process the extension and another working day for the payment.

For any reason, if you cannot extend your visa online, you will have to go to the Immigration and Emigration office in Colombo or you have to take the help of an agent.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

How long is the visa extension valid for, when should you extend your visa, how long does it take to process the visa extension, how much does the visa extension cost, step 1: registration, 2a. application, 2b. group member / dependent, 2c. confirmation, 2d. success, 3a. payment details, 3b. proceed with the payment, 3c. terms and conditions, 3d. confirm payment details, 3e. card details, 3f. thank you for your payment, 3g. payment success, step 4: visa endorsement, appendix 1: how to reduce the file size to 50kb or less.

Sri Lanka ETA allows you to stay up to 30 days in Sri Lanka. You can extend your visa twice from within the country, once for 60 days and again for 90 days.

The maximum time you can remain in Sri Lanka continuously as a tourist is 180 days.

If you exhaust your two allowed extensions, you will have to leave the country.

You can extend your visa anytime after you have entered Sri Lanka on your ETA. You don’t have to wait till the last minute.

I suggest extending your visa at least a week before your current visa expires as the extension procedure takes a minimum of 3 working days.

The online Sri Lanka visa extension process takes about 3 working days. It takes 2 working days to process your visa extension application and 1 working day to process your visa extension fee payment.

The Sri Lanka visa extension fee is $60 USD for the first extension and $90 USD for the second extension. A convenience fee of $2.5 USD will be charged if paying by a Visa/MasterCard and $1.5 USD if paying by American Express.

How to Extend Visa in Sri Lanka

extend visa in Sri Lanka, Visitor Visa extension

/ Last Update : 2023/05/31

Extend visa in sri lanka.

If you’re looking to extend your visa in Sri Lanka, it’s important to note that obtaining the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arrival is a mandatory requirement for all travelers

How can I extend my Sri Lanka visa?

There are two methods to extend your Sri Lanka visa:

In-Person Application:

To extend your visa, you need to submit an application to the visa section of the Department of Immigration & Emigration (Head Office). This can be done by visiting the department in person.

Online Application:

Alternatively, you can also apply for a visa extension through the online visit visa extension portal called e-Visa Extension. This provides a convenient and efficient way to extend your visa without the need for an in-person visit.

Can I apply for another visa before it expires?

If you are a tourist who entered Sri Lanka within the landing endorsement period granted by the authorized officers at the port of entry, you can apply for a visa extension before your current visa expires.

How many times can a tourist visa be extended?

In the first instance you can get an extension of up to 90 days from the date of arrival.

Secondly, another 90 days summing up to 180 days from the date of arrival.

Documents Required for Extending a Visit Visa:

If you have obtained a short-term visit visa, you must acquire the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before entering Sri Lanka. Foreigners should not enter the country without obtaining an ETA.

For a Tourist Visa, the following documents are needed:

✓ Return air ticket. ✓ Address and telephone number of the place of accommodation. ✓ Completed application form with a photograph of the applicant. ✓ Valid Passport. It is compulsory for the applicant to be present during the application and collection of the visa. This requirement is applicable only for those submitting applications at the Department of Immigration and Emigration (Head Office).

For a Business Visa, the following documents are required:

✓ Completed application form with a photograph of the applicant. ✓ Request letter from the business institute/company/agency to extend the business visa. ✓ Valid Passport. ✓ The relevant person or an authorized representative from the business institute should be present to collect the visa. By following these guidelines and providing the necessary documents, you can smoothly extend your tourist visit visa in Sri Lanka.

Thank you for the great Guide!

We are planning to travel to Weligama for 60-80 days and will have to get the ETA online. Is it going to be a problem if we indicate the tickets back with dates that are after 60 days, rather than 30 days that ETA visa will be for? Also, does it make sense to go to the immigration office right away after arrival and extend visa, or better to come later?

Thank you for your comment. Already answered your question. Please ready below

I recently extended my visa for another month. Arrived at 8:30 and had my passport back at 11:30 which I was quite impressed with (I expected to be there all day). I wasn’t asked for proof of funds nor a return flight – not to say they won’t of course.

I have a similar question to Bryony! In January, I got my visa extended until the 20th April. I went to Thailand for a week to see a friend and came back yesterday. I was surprised to find out that I needed to buy another 30 day visa at Colombo airport to come back in. Is my original three month visa extension now invalid? Ie do I need to get my 30 day visa (the one I had to get yesterday) extended again? Or am I still ok to stay until the 20th April? I’m somewhat confused, would really appreciate your help! Caroline

Hi Caroline,

Let me explain you which is not explained anywhere on the internet. When you apply for online visa (ETA) or On Arrival Visa, you get a 30 day visa with dual entry. However, if you extend it before expiring (ie within first 30 days of your arrival), then you dual entry option gets cancelled automatically and if you leave the country, your whole visa gets cancelled as well. In that case you are considered a new traveler and you will have to get a new visa to re-enter the country. So, in your case, you will have to get a new extension to your new visa if you would like to stay until April.

However, since you get a dual entry with your online 30 day visa, you can leave and re-enter the country during first 30 days of your arrival as long as you have not extended it. Hope this helps and clear !

Ah thank you for your help! I had assumed it was double entry because the ETA was. Oh well! Glad you are here to clarify things!

Yes, your visa gets cancelled if you leave the country whilst on extension. So, you will need a new visa to re-enter the country if you leave for UK in between. However, since you get a dual entry with your online 30 day visa, you can leave and re-enter the country during first 30 days of your arrival as long as you have not extended it.

Got it, thanks so much for taking the time to explain. This is a really useful blog post!

Hi Briony ! its pleasure to help you !! Have a nice trip !!

I don’t have an outbound flight as yet, has this typically been a problem for people trying to extend their visas?

We recommend you to take it with you to avoid unnecessary time waste and rejections.

Somebody asked the same question above but it hasn’t yet been answered — I will be going to the office to get a visa extension for my family (wife and 2 kids). Does anyone know if everybody needs to be there at the office, or if I can just bring their forms, photos and passports? Thx!

Hi Team I was in SriLanka recently (with my wife) for 6 weeks holiday. I extended my visa for another 30 days just before the 30 day current visa, through someone known to immigration office. I paid him 25000Rs for both of us. Is this the correct amount or not. I believe he robbed our money. Please let me know what is the correct amount in total for 2 of us. Thanks Sunil

Dear Sunil, Thank you for reaching to us. We feel sorry about the situation you ran into. Please provide us a little more information. What is your residential country. tks !

Hi, I’m also interested in knowing if it is possible for only me to be present to apply for extensions for our whole family (me, my husband and our baby). I imagine the long wait will make my 6-month-old infant quite cranky and it would be nice to avoid that. Also is it possible (and if yes, then what is needed) to extend the stay beyond 90 days? We would love to stay for 115 days in total.

Is a flight out required for the extension?

Hi Daniel, We recommend you to take it with you to avoid unnecessary time waste and rejections.

This is fantastic advice. We plan to stay in Sri Lanka for 80 days so we went to the immigrant office on Monday at 2pm just after we arrived in Sri Lanka, but unfortunately they could not process the extension that day. ( A note that although they state they are open until 4pm, they actually stop taking applications at 2pm). We had to leave early the next day to head south and will now have to go back to Colombo to apply. My question is do you know if my wife and daughter have to be present to apply for the visa extensions or can I make the trip back to Colombo myself with their passports and forms? This would save them having to making the trip as well…

Usually They advice everyone to attend the extension process personally. But let us check your case with them and get back to you.

Super helpful, bookmarked! Since it seems so easy to extend your visa, why is there such a strict requirement to show an outward ticket when you arrive? I am coming to SR in a few days and I don’t know how long for – but I have to buy a plane ticket out which I am not planning to use. Do you know of any way round this problem?

Thank you for the helpful post.

Dear Mike, I feel sorry to hear if you found any inconvenience to arrive. Please let us know your country to give you some tips.

I am here on a 30 day tourist visa but I have a flight back to china at the end of the 30 days (Oct-10) my flight coming back to Colombo is not until the (Dec-10) can the extension start when I get back on(Dec-10)?

Also I will be leaving for 8 days (Dec-22-30) for Christmas

What is the most cost effective way to handle this?

Best option would be to come back using a new entry permit rather than extending visa as extension starts immediately after your entry permit (if 30 tourist visa you already have) expires. There is no option to start the extension on the desired day. In your case extension will start Oct 10th and end on Dec 10th as an extension is given for 2 months. So, come back using a new entry permit and extend the new visa accordingly if you wish to stay longer.

we only have one day (Monday) to extend visa, flying Monday late night out of colombo. is it feasible to say that a visa extension can be gotten within ONE DAY? Otherwise we have to arrive in Colombo on Thursday to get it on Friday as office is closed on the weekend. thank you. We would waste 5 days just to get this visa early. We cannot get it when we arrive as we have an ayurveda treatment starting right away and will be picked up at airport in the middle of the night.

it depends, but mostly you may get the extension within one day.

Great guide, thanks. We plan to travel Sri Lanka for 35 days, but only plan to stay in Colombo a few days when we arrive, and then return just before we leave. Do you know if it possible to get the visa extension at the beginning of your stay in Sri Lanka, so we do not have to return to Colombo in the middle of our stay? Thanks

Hi Holger, at the moment It is possible. it could be changed without prior notice. So, we recommend other guest to check if there is new regulation implemented at their time. Hope this helps !!

It is quite a comprehensive article with all the required documents, instructions on the process and map inside the office. sri lanka tourist visa extension online

I am traveling to SL for a total of 44 days this July and August. I have taken a gander at the visa application process and I think I can enter with the multi day visit visa, and should then extend it. I’ve likewise observed that I can download and print the shape for extending the visa on-line.

Does anybody know where I have to go to process the augmentation? Are there offices that will help with this (for a charge obviously!) and any thought if extending is costly?

You have to visit the immigration and emigration office in Colombo as mentioned in the article above. There can be some individuals who help with the process but not official places. So, we can’t recommend anyone and I think it is not that difficult to get it done yourself if you follow our article above. Please refer to this link for the cost of extending visa

Really great information here, I have to read. A visitor wishing to remain over 30 days in Sri Lanka, may apply for an augmentation. The Short Visit visa might be extended up to 90 days from the date of landing in the primary instance and further 90 days at the second instance.

Thank you for your feedback!! it`s a pleasure to hear the guidance is helped

Great informative article for everyone :). While Sri Lanka offers an approach to get a 30-day Tourist Visa online, getting it extended isn’t as helpful. With a specific end goal to extend your stay in Sri Lanka as a tourist, you should by and by visit the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo and apply for one.

Thank you for taking the time to write a comment. I`m really glad if it could help you !!

Sri Lanka may be known as the teardrop isle (due to its distinctive shape), but the country’s refreshingly straightforward visa system shouldn’t be a source of too much anguish for travelers.

Here’s our guide to navigating the entry requirements for visiting Sri Lanka as a tourist, with information on visa types, costs, and how to apply for one.

Who needs to apply for a visa for Sri Lanka?

With the exception of citizens from Singapore , the Republic of Maldives , and the Republic of Seychelles , all travelers will require a visa to visit Sri Lanka. Fortunately the process for acquiring one is relatively straightforward.

Applying for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)

For trips to Sri Lanka of up to 30 days, visas (also known as ETAs) can be obtained from the government’s Department of Immigration and Emigration website . The application involves completing a simple form and making an online payment, with no need to submit passport copies, documents, or photographs. An application is also available upon arrival.

It costs US$50 for a double-entry, 30-day tourist visa (US$20 for residents of Afghanistan , Bangladesh , Bhutan , India , Nepal , and Pakistan ). Two-day transit visas are free and only necessary if you plan to leave the airport. There is also no charge for tourist visas for children under the age of 12.

It’s possible to check the status of an ETA online. Once approved, print out a copy of the ETA approval notice to show immigration officials on arrival in Sri Lanka. For an ETA to be valid, you must arrive in Sri Lanka within three months from the date of issue.

ETAs can also be applied for through travel agents and in person at Sri Lankan embassies or consulates ahead of a trip. Embassies can offer longer visas, such as those granting entry for 90 days.

In addition to an ETA, visitors to Sri Lanka need to make sure they have a passport valid for at least six months from the date of arrival, a confirmed return ticket and sufficient funds to meet their expenses during the stay.

Can I apply for a tourist visa on arrival in Sri Lanka?

A limited facility runs at Bandaranaike International Airport (Sri Lanka’s main international airport), offering ETAs on arrival. These visas cost more than those obtained before travel (US$60; or US$25 for residents of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, and Pakistan). It’s also worth noting if your visa application is unsuccessful for any reason, you will be returned to your original destination.

How do I extend a tourist visa in Sri Lanka?

You can renew a 30-day tourist visa up to three times once in Sri Lanka. The initial extension is usually granted for 60 days, and the maximum length of a tourist visa is 270 days. Visitors wishing to apply for an extension should make sure they do so before their current visa expires and must ensure their passport is valid for at least two months after their intended stay.

Applications can be submitted via the online visa extension portal . The fee depends on your nationality and length of stay. Contact the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo should you need further advice on extending your stay.

Not sure if Sri Lanka is worth it? Check out these 10 Amazing Reasons to Visit in 2024!

Yes, absolutely! Since 2012, anyone planning a trip to Sri Lanka must have a visa. It doesn’t matter where you’re from or how long you’re planning to stay; you simply can’t travel to Sri Lanka without a visa.

The only exceptions to this rule are Sri Lankan dual citizens, certain children under specific conditions, and holders of Diplomatic or Official Passports.

Now, the type of visa you’ll need for your Sri Lanka adventure depends on why you’re visiting Sri Lanka in the first place. Are you planning a romantic honeymoon, looking to work remotely, or just passing through?

No matter your reason, here’s a quick rundown of the types of visas available in Sri Lanka:

  • Tourist Visa : Ideal for exploring Sri Lanka for up to 30 days, with the option to extend your stay for 6 months.
  • Transit Visa : Perfect for those quick layovers in Colombo . It’s completely free and grants a 48-hour stay with a single entry.
  • Residence Visa: Designed for longer stays in Sri Lanka for work, investment, or educational purposes.
  • Business Visa : Tailored for work-related visits , such as attending meetings or workshops.

For me, as a solo female traveler looking to explore this beautiful country, the tourist visa is the perfect fit.

It gives me enough time to discover all the top things to do in Sri Lanka , with the added perk of being able to slip out and back in once during those 30 days (thank you, double entry!).

There are four main ways to get your Sri Lanka tourist visa, and I’ll walk you through each of them in detail later on:

  • Apply online by yourself.
  • Apply online through a third party.
  • Apply in person upon arrival at the airport.
  • Apply in person at your country’s Sri Lankan embassy or consulate.

The ETA, short for Electronic Travel Authorization, is your official permission to visit Sri Lanka for a short period of time.

It’s not a separate type of visa; it’s an online system that lets you to apply for a Tourist, Business, or Transit Visa.

Throughout this guide, I’ll mainly focus on the Sri Lanka tourist visa. However, you might hear me refer to it as “Sri Lanka Visa” or “Sri Lanka ETA” – for our purposes here, they’re pretty much the same thing!

Usually, no, it’s not. Most travelers need to pay a fee ranging from $20 to $60 for a tourist visa.

There’s one exception though— the transit visa, which comes at absolutely no cost! Oh, and here’s another perk— all visas are free for children of any nationality under 12 years old.

The cost of your visa will depend on a few factors: your nationality, the type of visa you’re applying for, and how you choose to apply.

You should always check out the Official Sri Lanka Visa Website to get the most up-to-date information, but here’s a quick summary:

For Most Nationalities

  • Tourist visa online: $50
  • Tourist visa on arrival: $60
  • Business visa: $55
  • Transit visa: Free

For SAARC Countries

  • Tourist visa online: $20
  • Tourist visa on arrival: $25
  • Business visa online: $30

Before diving into your Sri Lanka adventure, let’s make sure you have everything you need for your visa application:

  • A valid passport
  • The address of your first-night accommodation in Sri Lanka
  • A reliable payment method, like a valid credit or debit card for the visa fee

That’s all it takes! No passport copies, documents or photographs are required. How convenient is that?

Do I Need A Plane Ticket To Apply For The ETA?

No, there’s no need to book flights in advance. When applying for your visa, you only need to know your intended arrival date.

Do I Need Travel Insurance To Get The Sri Lanka ETA?

While travel insurance isn’t a requirement for applying for the ETA or even entering Sri Lanka, I highly recommend it.

It offers peace of mind and can be a lifesaver in handling any unexpected issues that may come up during your Sri Lanka adventure. Also, if you’re traveling solo in Sri Lanka, don’t forget to pack some safety essentials!

As you get ready to enter Sri Lanka, make sure you have the following essentials to breeze through emigration:

  • A valid passport with at least six months’ validity and two empty pages.
  • Printed ETA (though usually available on arrival, your airline might request it before boarding).
  • Proof of return or onward travel plans .
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay.
  • Accommodation address for your first night in Sri Lanka.
  • Sri Lanka Arrival Card (usually provided on the plane or at the airport, now available online ).
  • A pen (handy for filling out forms).

Note: While I’ve never been asked for proof of return or sufficient funds, it’s always better to be prepared!

Absolutely! Sri Lanka offers an online visa application system, making it incredibly convenient for travelers like you and me to apply for a visa from anywhere in the world with internet access.

Gone are the days of embassy visits or waiting in airport queues! (though, those options are still available if you prefer!)

Getting a Sri Lanka visa online is easier than you might think! Just fill out a straightforward online form, pay the visa fee, and then await the approval email, typically arriving within 24 hours.

The best part? You don’t need to involve a third party. The entire process can be completed in less than 10 minutes, right from the comfort of your own home.

Alright, now, let me walk you through exactly how to get your Sri Lanka tourist visa online

Step 1: Enter the Official ETA Website

First things first, head straight to the Official ETA Website . Choose your preferred language, navigate to the “Apply” section, and agree to the basic terms and conditions.

Now, pick the type of visa you need. If you’re traveling solo, go for “Tourist ETA – Apply for an individual”. If you’re traveling Sri Lanka with family or friends, click on “Tourist ETA –Apply for group”.

IMPORTANT: Always double-check that you’re on the right website to avoid being charge extra by unofficial platforms.

Step 2: Fill Out the Application Form

Get comfortable and fill out the application form with all your personal and travel details .

Make sure to answer “No” to the three questions at the end, or you won’t be able to move forward.

Keep in mind that the form is available only in English , and you just need to fill in the sections marked with a red asterisk.

Step 3: Double-Check Your Information

Once you’ve completed the form, take a moment to review all the information you’ve provided on the next page.

It’s always worth the extra time to ensure everything is correct.

Why? Well, if you happen to spot an error later on, you’ll need to submit a brand new visa application – and yes, that means paying for it again!

Step 4: Pay the Sri Lanka Visa Fee

Ready to proceed? Great! Now, it´s time to choose your preferred payment method and settle the Sri Lanka visa fee.

Remember, the Sri Lanka tourist visa fee is non-refundable, even if your application is denied.

Step 5: Keep an Eye on Your Inbox

Keep an eye on your inbox for an email confirming they’ve received your application.

This email just confirms they’ve got your application, not whether your visa’s been approved.

And don’t forget to jot down the reference number they give you; it might come in handy later for any questions or status checks.

Step 6: Wait for the Response – Visa Approved!

Now, sit back and wait for another email – this one will let you know if your visa’s been approved or denied.

Usually, it takes 24-48 hours for a Sri Lanka visa to get approved, but sometimes you get lucky, like I did – got mine in just 15 minutes!

Step 7: Print Our Your Visa

So, your visa got approved – that’s awesome news! Now, make sure to print out the entire email containing your visa approval and keep it safe with your other travel documents.

You might be wondering, why bother printing it if it’s already linked to my passport?

Well, here’s the thing – while Sri Lanka’s immigration office usually doesn’t ask for it, your airline might want to see it before you board your flight.

And why is that, you ask? Because, if for any reason you’re denied entry upon arrival, your airline would need to arrange your return trip home – and believe me, they’d much rather avoid that headache!

Step 8: Touchdown in Sri Lanka

Finally, once you land at Bandaranaike International Airport (Colombo), make your way to the immigration officers’ queue and hand over all those important documents we talked about earlier.

The immigration officer will then stamp your passport with the duration of your visit – just make sure to double-check that it matches what you applied for!

With all the paperwork sorted and your luggage collected, you’re officially ready to start exploring Sri Lanka!

Keep Reading: Exactly What To Do If Your Luggage is Lost or Stolen At the Airport

Absolutely! If you haven’t had the chance to arrange your visa beforehand, don’t worry – you can always get your Sri Lanka visa at Colombo airport upon arrival.

Here´s everything you need to know on getting your visa upon arrival in Sri Lanka:

  • As soon as you touch down, make your way to a small office located just a few steps away from the immigration counter.
  • Once there, the process is similar to filling out the online application – have your passport ready, complete the ETA application form, and pay the visa fee.
  • If everything goes smoothly and your details check out, your Sri Lanka visa application will be approved, and you’ll be issued an ETA valid for 30 days.
  • Finally, head over to the Immigration gates, where you’ll present the ETA, the immigration paper, and your passport – just like you would if you had applied for the ETA from home.

In my experience, the Sri Lanka ETA is a much better option than the visa on-arrival.

Why? Well, consider this: the airport queue for the visa on arrival can be painfully long, and it’ll cost you an extra $10 compared to applying online.

What’s more, if your visa is rejected last minute , you’ll be denied entry to Sri Lanka and forced to return home.

On the other hand, applying online is a breeze. In just 10 minutes, you can have your visa sorted without needing any advanced tech skills.

For all these reasons, I wholeheartedly recommend taking care of your tourist visa online before embarking on your Sri Lanka adventure.

Another option for getting your Sri Lanka visa is by heading over to the Sri Lanka embassy or consulate in your country.

The process is quite similar to what we discussed earlier, with the main difference being that you’ll need to wait about 3 working days for the Embassy to process your visa (though sometimes it might take longer, so always apply well in advance!).

Once approved, you’ll also need to swing by in person to pick it up.

Sure, my top choice for applying for the Sri Lanka visa will always be doing it online by myself. It’s cheap, it’s faster, and above all, it’s safe.

But if English isn’t your first language or you run into any issues with payments or sending documents on the official website, there’s no need to stress.

You can always opt for a third-party service like Ivisa.com , which handles everything for you for a fee of less than 20 USD (17 euros).

Just enter your travel dates, personal info, passport details, and payment method, and they’ll take care of the rest.

The maximum stay on a Sri Lanka tourist visa is 30 days. But, if you’re not ready to leave the country, you can always extend your visa

With your first extension, you can add another 60 days (that’s 2 months) to your initial 30-day visa, giving you a total of 90 days (or 3 months).

Then, for your second and final extension, you can tack on another 90 days, reaching a maximum stay of 6 months from the day you first set foot in Sri Lanka.

Oh, overstaying your visa in Sri Lanka is definitely something you want to avoid! It can lead to some serious consequences, including hefty fines and even deportation.

Always make sure to apply for a tourist visa extension in advance or leave the country before your visa expires.

Believe me, a few extra days in Sri Lanka are not worth the potential trouble (or the money you might have to pay in fines!) .

Well, here’s the good news: unlike some other Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, in Sri Lanka, you don´t have to leave the country to extend your visa.

Let me walk you through the whole process step by step:

Extend Your Sri Lanka Tourist Visa Online

First things first, I’d highly recommend trying to extend your Sri Lanka tourist visa online. It’s super convenient and saves you the hassle of making a trip to the immigration office.

All you need to do is provide your passport and nationality details, fill in the visa extension information, and submit your application online.

Once it’s verified, you’ll receive an email with a link to pay the visa fees, and your visa extension will arrive in your inbox.

However, if for some reason the online platform isn’t working or you never receive the email with the payment link (which can happen sometimes!), things can get a bit tricky.

In that case, you might need to head over to Colombo , specifically to the Department of Immigration and Emigration. Here are the details:

  • Address: Suhurupaya, Subuthi Dr, Battaramulla, Colombo, Sri Lanka. (Google Maps)
  • Opening Hours: Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:15 pm.

Extend Your Tourist Visa in Person in Colombo

Once you’re there, follow this step-by-step guide:

  • Go directly to the Visa section on the 4th floor to avoid the long queues of Sri Lankans trying to renew their passports.
  • Head to the “Token Issuing Counters” in AREA C to receive a form to fill out and attach a passport-sized photo.
  • Present the completed form along with your original passport to receive a token number. Make sure to keep this number handy throughout the process.
  • Wait in the designated waiting area (AREA B) until your token number is called.
  • When your number is called, enter an office where you’ll submit your documentation and answer some basic questions.
  • Return to the waiting area in AREA C.
  • At the “Visa Issuing Counter,” collect your documents along with the payment receipt for the visa extension fee.
  • Proceed to the “Cashier Counter” to pay the visa fee . You can use a credit card or the ATM available in the building.
  • Return to the “Visa Issuing Counter” with the payment receipt, and receive your documents with the visa extension stamped in your passport.

With these steps, you’ve successfully extended your visa and can get back to enjoying all that Sri Lanka has to offer.

How much does it cost to extend your Sri Lanka visa? Well, the exact price isn’t readily available online, not even on the official website.

However, last time I checked, extending your visa for one month typically costs around $100.

But the good news is that you could get a two-month visa extension for the same price!

Still, $100 can really add up, especially when you’re keeping a close eye on your budget during your Sri Lanka adventure. So, you should take a moment to consider whether it’s truly worth the investment if you’re only planning to stay for a few extra days.

If you ever find yourself extending your visa in Sri Lanka, here are some things you should know:

  • Arrive Early : Aim to get there before 10:00 am if you want to complete the process in a single day.
  • Be Patient: Be prepared to spend at least 4 hours .
  • Bring Correct Documents : Make sure to bring exactly the same documents you used to enter Sri Lanka, along with any extra supporting documents for the visa extension
  • Passport Photo: You’ll need a passport photo, which you can easily get downstairs for 500 Rs.
  • Pack Snacks: Bring along snacks, water, and something to pass the time while you wait.

Bonus Tip: If you need snacks or drinks, you’ll find a restaurant downstairs and a shop on the same floor.

You can apply for an ETA from 90 days up to 24 hours before your arrival . This gives you a window of three months from the date your visa is issued to enter Sri Lanka.

However, to avoid any last-minute panic attacks, I always recommend applying at least one or two weeks before your intended travel date.

If your visa application is rejected , don’t panic .You’ll receive a referral notification and should contact the nearest Sri Lanka Overseas Mission for assistance.

Unfortunately, the visa fee is non-refundable , so you won´t get your money back.

Indeed it is! With a Sri Lanka tourist visa, you’re free to exit and re-enter the country once within those initial 30 days.

It’s handy if you plan to explore other countries in Asia, like Cambodia or Japan , and then return to continue your Sri Lankan adventure.

If you’re just passing through Sri Lanka and staying within the airport, you don’t need a visa. But if you plan to step out during your layover in Colombo, you’ll need a free transit visa.

To be on the safe side, I’d suggest going online and getting this visa before your trip .

Just remember, it only allows you to stay for up to 2 days, and you can’t extend or change it to another type of visa later on.

And there you have it – your stress-free guide to getting a Sri Lanka visa in 2024. I’ve tried my best to cover all your questions!

Sure, dealing with visas can feel a bit overwhelming at first, but trust me, the experiences waiting for you in Sri Lanka are totally worth it.

Sri Lanka Tourist Visa Policy in 2024

Every traveler planning a visit to Sri Lanka is obliged to secure a visa, either upon arrival or through prior arrangements. For those embarking on a journey for tourism, the mandatory requirement is an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This authorization grants a complimentary 30-day visa period and the flexibility of double entry, commencing from the initial arrival date in Sri Lanka and valid for 30 days.

In October 2023, Sri Lanka updated its tourist visa policy 2024 to offer free visas to nationals of seven countries: China, India, Russia, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. This visa waiver is for a maximum stay of 30 days and can be obtained upon arrival or through an online application. The free visa waiver initiative continues until March 31, 2024, and allows for double entry from the date of first arrival in Sri Lanka after October 24, 2023.

Once in Sri Lanka, tourist can extend their stay without leaving the country. Extensions are usually provided in three-month blocks, with a maximum total extension of up to 270 days from the entry.

How to Apply for Sri Lanka ETA Online?

Any traveler planning a short visit to Sri Lanka must obtain an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) in advance. Upon arrival, the applicant may be granted a 30-day ETA, with double entries permitted from the first entry date.

To apply for a Sri Lanka ETA online, follow these steps

  • Go to the “Apply” option on the official website of Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration & Emigration .
  • Fill out the form with the required details, such as personal information, passport details, and travel plans.
  • Pay the processing fee with a valid credit or debit card.
  • Submit the form and await a confirmation email, which usually arrives within a few hours.
  • Print the received ETA approval notice to present to the immigration officer upon arrival in Sri Lanka.

As a reminder, residents of China, India, Russia, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia are exempt from the ETA until March 31, 2024, and will receive a free visa on arrival or through an online application.

The ETA is initially valid for 30 days from the date of arrival but can be extended up to six months. To do this, you will need to apply for an ETA visa extension Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan govt introduces simplified e-visa process to attract Tourists

Sri Lanka | Photo: canva

Sri Lanka has launched a more user-friendly e-visa system designed to appeal to travel enthusiasts. A new visa portal has been unveiled to streamline the visa application process, aiming to boost tourism in the country.

The new e-visa system replaces the existing Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system. Travellers arriving by air or sea for leisure or business purposes can now apply for an e-visa online. However, individuals from Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Syria are not eligible to apply through this online system; they must apply directly via the embassy.

To apply for an e-visa, users need to register an account on the Sri Lanka e-visa website and upload their passports and recent photographs. Payment of the e-visa fees is made online. Applicants will receive an application number upon submission, which can be used to check the status of their visa application.

Travellers entering Sri Lanka with an e-visa are required to carry a photocopy of the visa.

Last year, Sri Lanka introduced visa-free entry for citizens of several countries, including India. This scheme was in effect until March 31, 2024, and was widely utilized by Indian tourists keen to explore Sri Lanka's attractions.
