The ultimate guide to Leeds

By Emma Russell

Things to do in Leeds the ultimate guide

Brexit may have ruined Leeds’ chances of being officially dubbed European Capital of Culture in 2023, but there are plenty of reasons why Yorkshire’s largest city deserves that title and, of course, a visit. The city attracts bands and DJs from around the world, and has enough music venues for every night of the month, whatever your calling. It hosts food festivals, a thriving craft beer scene, and has vintage shops to rival Shoreditch. Amidst grand Victorian architecture and gritty post-industrial streets, this often-overlooked Northern town has found its feet, emerging as a hub of creativity.

THE MUSIC SCENE

Leeds has a rich musical history fostering goth, punk and indie scenes in the now defunct venues of The Cockpit, Brunswick Terrace, Queens Hall and low-budget The Duchess of York, where Nirvana played early on in their career. As evidence of the massive regeneration of the city, that last one is now a Hugo Boss store, but there are still plenty of places that nurture talent, old and new.

Opened in 1913 as a working men’s club for the community, the Brudenell Social Club was saved from bankruptcy in the 1990s and transformed into one of Leeds’ most-loved venues. It retains its working men’s club interiors – carpeted floors and leather stools – but now hosts big-name acts (Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand and Kate Nash have all played here) alongside the more obscure. The clientele is a delightful mix of locals who have been visiting for more than 50 years perched beside the students who dominate the Hyde Park area of the city, plus anyone else who fancies a cheap pint. Nearby, the three-year-old Hyde Park Book Club is more Gen Z with craft beer and weekend brunches served up in a space that was once a popular fancy-dress shop, on busy Headingley Lane. It puts on live music and DJ sets most nights, and hosts spoken-word poetry and discussion groups centred around philosophy and politics.

In the Northern Quarter, Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen (pictured above) is the epitome of hipster cool. But its eclectic furnishings, rooftop with beach huts and deckchairs, pop-up food stalls and craft ale-focused bar are all sideshows to the 300-capacity events space that hosts everyone from New York hip hop legends to local jazz , pop, synth and rock acts. For something a little lower key, Outlaws Yacht Club has all kinds of DJs playing on a vintage 1970s sound system.

A trip to Leeds isn’t complete without hitting the town. Warehouse parties at Canal Mills and Mint Warehouse bring in party-scene big names, while more intimate gigs are played at Wire . Or check out beats by collectives such as the Cosmic Slop soundsystem, who raise funds with their monthly events in the Grade II-listed gallery space of Hope House in aid of MAP (Music & Arts Production) Charity.

THINGS TO DO AND SEE IN LEEDS

FOR ARTY TYPES

One of the latest additions to the Leeds art scene is The Tetley (pictured above) , a contemporary art gallery housed in an Art Deco former brewery . More established spaces include the Henry Moore Institute , founded by the artist and his family in 1977 to showcase one of Europe’s largest collections of sculpture, and The Leeds Art Gallery (pictured below) next door. Stop by for 20th-century British art and cake in the gallery’s Tiled Hall, an amazing former reading room that has impressive vaulted ceilings covered in mosaics and turquoise-tiled walls.

Artists have also painted impressive murals on buildings around the city. Athena Rising stands at more than 150 feet and is the UK’s tallest, while Graeme Willson’s Cornucopia depicts a classical Roman goddess and Leeds history on the side of a fish and chip shop near the Corn Exchange. Hidden in basements and former industrial buildings are plenty of lesser-known galleries too. If you’re after something a little more DIY, check out Left Bank Leeds, Basement Arts Project and Sunny Bank Mills , or experience a live art event at CLAY .

FOR FILM BUFFS

Buy a tiny paper ticket from the red and white booth at the Hyde Park Picturehouse , the only gaslit cinema still operating in the UK . It’s terrazzo foyer floor and faux-classical columns will take you back to another era. It shows everything from arthouse and independent movies to big new releases and reruns of classic films around the holidays and since 1987 the cinema has hosted the Leeds International Film Festival.

SHOPPING IN LEEDS

Victorian architect Cuthbert Brodrick’s influences are all around the city. He’s best known for the Leeds Town Hall, and the landmark domed Corn Exchange (pictured above) . The latter is now home to independent shops and food stalls that include the Plant Point , for a millenial-thrilling selection of botanicals, or if you’re inspired by earlier eras, visit West Yorkshire Cameras, Released Records , and All Blues Co .

THE BEST FOOD MARKET

Gone are the days when Michael Marks, a Polish refugee who opened a market stall in the city, would recount his slogan 'Don't ask the price, it's a penny.’ His store, Marks & Spencer, is now a staple name in homes across England, while Kirkgate Market (pictured above) lives on as one of the largest covered markets in Europe . Today though, Leeds is fostering a new kind of food scene with festivals , new restaurant openings and bars , proving the Northern town has more to offer when it comes to food and drink .

The ever-growing community of independent coffee shops and artisan roasters here include Laynes Espresso (pictured above) near the train station, North Star Coffee by the docks, House of Koko in Chapel Allerton, plus La Bottega Milanese and Mrs Atha’s , both on quiet backstreets off the main shopping drag. With exposed brick, wooden floors, and an eclectic mix of furniture and crockery, as well as a mouth-watering selection of cakes and snacks, Mrs Atha’s is the perfect spot for breakfast and a sugar fix too.

THE BEST RESTAURANTS IN LEEDS

The Ox Club (pictured above) is the new kid on the block and has elevated Leeds’ food scene by producing award-winning contemporary British fare that uses seasonal Yorkshire produce. Neighbourhood classics include Salvo’s (pictured below) , a buzzing trattoria run by the Dammone family, who have served Italian and Sicilian favourites to queues of Leeds locals since 1976. There’s also The Reliance , which cooks up masterful yet hearty creations in a rustic setting. The Arts Café makes great tasting food from seasonal ingredients and local produce in a room where the walls are adorned with work by up-and-coming artists (the space also puts on six weekly exhibitions ).

THE BEST BARS IN LEEDS

Leeds’ craft beer scene is thriving and best experienced at local favourite North Bar or Bundobust (pictured above) , where you can pair your beer with a selection of modern Indian street food. For something more traditional, there’s Whitelock's Ale House , a former marketman's pub that’s perfect for an ale on a cold day — it’s the oldest in the city, founded in 1715, and still retains an impressive old wooden bar and stained glass windows. Trendier hangouts include The Brunswick and Headrow House , or wander down Call Lane at the weekend for a real taste of Leeds fun.

Drop off was easy. Taken straight to the main departures entrance. Returned back and was told to be at the same place as drop off. Within 4 mins the Bus arrived. Checked back in to collect car keys given and told where it was parked. Could not have been any easier!! Thanks

Extremely easy and pleasant to deal with, very friendly.

Everything was brilliant, the driver even dropped us at our car after getting keys because of the weather, a big thank you all.

Excellent, my wife and I spoke about this being the best parking experience we have had.

Very smooth hassle free experience, minimum waiting around. I would use again, highly recommended.

The service was superb, from arrival to collecting my car at the end of holiday. Personnel were friendly, professional in their service and most helpful. I will be using this service again on my next travels out of Leeds/Bradford in October. Thank you for making the start and the ending of my holiday hassle free.

  • A lot to love about Bali

by Cassy x | Jan 30, 2023 | Bali , Travel

bali-holidays-cc-travel

A Bali blog. It’s a long one ????

We flew Singapore to Bali with Singapore airlines just over 2 hours in Business class this service was BRILL.

On arrival we paid for the VIP meet & Greet worth EVERY PENNY! The Queues were around 2/3 hours for immigration, visas passport control etc with the Vip you are met off the plane and ushered through a VIP section I think it was about £25pp the same VIP staff member stays with you and helps with everything including walking you to a driver if you book the VIP with my contact. We were in the taxi from arrival within 40 mins compared to the 2/3 hour queues and checks.

If you don’t book a VIP service even locating your driver if you have one looked tricky as about 150 people holding name signs in arrivals it’s a bit overwhelming.

The driver you can use for any trips and to get you around Bali you can reach them via Watsap and were super reliable highly recommend you use them.

Visa is around £27pp on arrival and they glanced at our Covid vaccines ( we’ve had 2 and no tests etc required )

Pack tissues and hand gel is a top tip.

Our first stop was Sanur in a serviced Villa, The Villa was HUGE if I am honest a bit too big for us two but it was great, a tad too far from Sanur front we walked it but was very dark coming home. Sanur has a nice front with lots of bars and eateries nothing too lively just a nice vibe, as you can imagine lots of shops selling tourist tat, massages galore and some nice beach bars where you can sit in the sand. We booked a trip to Nusa Penida from here its about 30 mins ferry from Sanur we booked a driver with a tour of the west it was packed with Tourist and felt more about getting the right picture for your facebook rather than enjoying the island, too busy for us and I wouldn’t go back. Not for the faint hearted or injured as the roads are very uneven so not a comfortable ride.

We then moved to Ubud and stayed at the Viceroy this was a SUPERB HOTEL highly recommend this place and our villa was breathtaking with views into the jungle & a free shuttle to town. Ubud was special it’s famous for a reason you have to see it to believe it I loved the vibe here its more a hippy , back packers & spiritual it’s a Vegetarians & Vegan haven loads of funky bars and quirky places to eat and SOOO CHEAP! Lots of trendy bars too and this was a little more costly but still not expensive. We visited one of the Coffee Plantation and had a tour and sampled some of the Teas and coffees this was great and really interesting. We also did a Cycling Tour from the Hotel to the Rice fields and that was great.

So much to do here from Giant Swings over plantations, Temples galore, Shopping, ATV, Rafting, Walking, Cycling, Animal Attractions ( we didn’t do this it makes me sad ☹ )

From Ubud we moved to Seminyak and stayed at the Oberoi This is a more traditional older Hotel its over 40 years old and feels a little tired but it was due to be refurbished then Covid hit , the staff and breakfast was great and right on the beach. Seminyak is very lively and appeals to families who like lively and younger crowds wanting funky beach clubs without paying the Ibiza price tag lots of restaurants and shopping and also some more higher end Shops here too I was surprised how many top brand shops there is plus a champagne bar. Something for everyone here. Sadly the beaches are not great as plastics are a problem here and lots of litter on the beach is swept up daily some of the Hotels are doing a clean up job but it’s very sad to see what is happening with litter from the sea. Apparently in the summer May – Sep it’s much better and the beach is protected for the Turtles ???? it seems to be winter is a problem when the sea is rough and they have rain.

For our last 2 days we stayed at Raffles Bali in Jimbaran Bay. What can I say WOW this place is the height of luxury and intimate service it was impressive. The room was incredible. Walk or taxi into into Jimbaran bay. Plenty of beach restaurants and shops the tourist shops plus the further you get in the bigger shops.

The Bali people have nothing so will tout you for Taxis, shopping, fans and the normal lookie lookie style products as well as more traditional products.

The traffic is unbelievable so a 30km journey might take 1.5 hours to 2 hours it’s mental. The smell of incense is literally everywhere and will always remind me of Bali. I also loved the temples and the Bali traditions it’s mesmerising passing all the temples as each family has their own in their grounds.

Washing is super cheap so get it done before you come home we paid the equivalent of £1 per kg for washed and pressed who wants to wash when you get home when it’s so cheap. Shop around though or barter as they will try charge you more. We found the places with prices printed more reasonable than those picking figures out of the air.

Pack light and relaxed it’s not a dressy place so you need very little most people out in shorts and vests only hotels or the snazzy restaurants people get dressed up really. Leave the heels at home as it’s sliders , flip flops or trainers all the way the streets are so uneven you would literally break your neck ( unless eating in the hotel ) I’ve not straightened my hair or worn any make up in 2 weeks it’s just so relaxed ????.

It’s back by popular demand — Delta and American Express unveiled the next iteration of the limited-edition Boeing 747 Delta SkyMiles Reserve Card on the heels of the overwhelming response from Card Members when first launched in 2022 .

The new limited-edition cards are cloud-white in color and made from two Delta Boeing 747 aircraft 1 that were retired after more than 27 years of service and feature each plane’s history, including their first and last flights, tail number and number of miles flown.

The new limited-edition Delta SkyMiles Reserve Cards are cloud-white in color and made from two Delta Boeing 747 aircrafts that were retired after more than 27 years of service and feature each plane’s history, including their first and last flights, tail number and number of miles flown.

The card is available exclusively for new and existing Delta SkyMiles Reserve and Reserve Business Card Members from April 25 through June 5, 2024, while supplies last. The new design comes after recent enhancements made to the Delta SkyMiles American Express Cards to improve the travel experience and deliver everyday value to Members, both in the air and on the ground.

“At Delta, innovation and experience are at the core of everything we do,” said Prashant Sharma, V.P. of Loyalty at Delta Air Lines. “Each card carries the legacy of countless journeys and embodies the spirit of exploration that drives our customers and all of us at Delta. When combined with the recently upgraded benefits, these cards provide a nod to our storied past and symbolize the elevated experiences our customers can expect in their future travels.”

In 2022, Delta and American Express launched the first iteration of the limited-edition Boeing Delta 747 Card design, one of the most iconic airplanes in aviation history. The new design is made with 33% metal from a retired Delta Boeing 747 plane and has a white glossy finish, which is inspired by clouds.

American Express Reserve Card

“We’re bringing back one of our most popular Card designs ever with a new look honoring the ‘Queen of the Skies,’” said Jon Gantman, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Cobrand Product Management at American Express. “Given the strong response from customers with our first Card design, we wanted to find another exciting opportunity for aviation enthusiasts and Card Members to have a piece of aviation history in their wallets.”

The Delta SkyMiles Reserve and Reserve Business American Express Cards offer premium travel benefits for Delta loyalists, including an enhanced Companion Certificate each year after renewal 2 , an MQD Headstart that helps you get closer to Status, miles accelerators, access to exclusive reservations through Global Dining Access by Resy 3 , and more.
