Travel Insurance 101: How Travel Insurance Works

How Travel Insurance Works

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is a plan you purchase that protects you from certain financial risks and losses that can occur while traveling. These losses can be minor, like a delayed suitcase, or significant, like a last-minute trip cancellation or a medical emergency overseas.

In addition to financial protection, the other huge benefit of travel insurance is access to assistance services , wherever you are in the world. Our elite team of travel and medical experts can arrange medical treatment in an emergency, monitor your care, serve as interpreters, help you replace lost passports and so much more. Sometimes, they even save travelers’ lives.

A few things you should know about travel insurance:

  • Benefits vary by plan. It’s important to choose a plan that fits your needs, your budget and your travel plans. Here are definitions of all available travel insurance benefits.
  • Travel insurance can’t cover every possible situation. Allianz Travel Insurance is  named perils  travel insurance, which means it covers only the specific situations, events, and losses included in your plan documents, and only under the conditions we describe.
  • Travel insurance is designed to cover  unforeseeable events —not things you could easily see coming, or things within your control. If, for example,  you wait to buy insurance for your beach trip until after a named hurricane is hustling toward your destination, your losses wouldn’t be covered.

How does travel insurance work?

In most scenarios, travel insurance reimburses you for your covered financial losses after you file a claim and the claim is approved. Filing a claim means submitting proof of your loss to Allianz Global Assistance, so that we can verify what happened and reimburse you for your covered losses. You can  file a claim online , or do it on your phone with the  Allyz ® TravelSmart app .

How does this work in real life? Let’s say you purchase the OneTrip Prime Plan , which includes trip cancellation benefits, to protect your upcoming cruise to Cozumel. Two days before departure, you experience a high fever and chest pain. Your doctor diagnoses bacterial pneumonia and advises you to cancel the trip. When you notify the cruise line, they tell you it’s too late to receive a refund.

Without travel insurance, you’d lose the money you spent on your vacation. Fortunately, a serious, disabling illness can be considered a covered reason for trip cancellation , which means you can be reimbursed for your prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs. Once you’re feeling better, you gather the required documents—such as your airfare and cruise line receipts and information about any refunds you did or did not receive—and you file a claim . You can even choose to receive your reimbursement by direct deposit, to your debit card, or via check.

Sometimes, this process works a little differently. Travel insurance may pay your expenses upfront if you require emergency medical treatment or emergency transportation while traveling overseas. Or, with the  OneTrip Premier and OneTrip Prime plans, you may be eligible to receive a fixed payment of $100 per day for a covered travel delay or $100 for a covered baggage delay . No receipts for purchases are required; all you need is proof of your covered delay.

Many travelers are wondering: Can COVID-19 be considered a covered reason for trip cancellation? And can travel insurance help if you become seriously ill with COVID-19 while traveling? Most of our travel insurance plans now include epidemic-related covered reasons (benefits vary by plan and are not available in all jurisdictions). The Epidemic Coverage Endorsement adds covered reasons to select benefits for certain losses related to COVID-19 and any future epidemic. To see if your plan includes this endorsement and what it covers, please look for "Epidemic Coverage Endorsement" on your Declarations of Coverage or Letter of Confirmation. Terms, conditions and exclusions apply. Benefits may not cover the full cost of your loss. All benefits are subject to maximum limits of liability, which may in some cases be subject to sublimits and daily maximums.

How to choose a travel insurance plan

There’s a wide range of Allianz Travel Insurance plans, each with different benefits and benefit limits. So how do you know which is best for you? To begin, get a quote for your upcoming trip. When you enter your age, trip costs and trip dates, we can recommend a few plans for you. Then, you can compare the costs and benefits of each.

If you’re a budget-conscious traveler who’s traveling in the U.S., you may like the OneTrip Cancellation Plus Plan . It includes trip cancellation, trip interruption and trip delay benefits.

If you want protection in case of medical emergencies overseas, but you have few pre-paid trip expenses, you may consider the OneTrip Emergency Medical Plan . This affordable plan includes emergency medical and emergency transportation benefits, as well as other post-departure benefits, but not trip cancellation/interruption.

If you want the reassurance of carrying substantial travel insurance benefits, the best fit may be the OneTrip Prime Plan . This plan also covers kids 17 and under for free when traveling with a parent or grandparent (not available on policies issued to Pennsylvania residents).

If you’re planning several trips in the next 12 months, consider annual travel insurance such as the AllTrips Prime Plan . It gives you affordable protection for a full year of travel, including benefits for trip cancellation and interruption; emergency medical care; lost/stolen or delayed baggage; and Rental Car Damage and theft protection (available to residents of most states).

How to get the most from your travel insurance plan

Don’t wait too long to buy travel insurance! The best time to buy travel insurance is immediately after you’ve completed your travel arrangements. The earlier you buy insurance, the bigger your coverage window. Also, you must buy your plan within 14 days of making your initial trip deposit in order to be eligible for the pre-existing medical condition benefit (not available on all plans).

Read your plan documents before you leave. If you're not completely satisfied with your plan, you have 15 days (or more, depending on your state of residence) to request a refund, provided you haven't started your trip or initiated a claim. Premiums are non-refundable after this period.

Call us when you need help. If you have questions about how travel insurance works, or how to file a claim, or which benefits you need, please contact us ! Our representatives are available 24/7. If you’re already traveling, and you’re facing a travel crisis or just need some advice, call our emergency assistance hotline .

The Coronavirus pandemic has not only changed how we travel but what we expect from travel insurance providers. The good news is, cover for some COVID-19-related events is available on all Travel Insurance Direct's plans, but the level of benefits varies between them. Here's what you can expect from its top level of cover:

Medical expenses overseas if you get sick with Covid-19 while on your journey Coronavirus travel costs including cover for quarantine expenses and trip cancellation

Some exclusions do apply, however, including costs related to a broadly imposed government quarantine or your neglecting to observe any relevant hygiene, social distancing or vaccination guidelines.

If you'd like to see what else is available, we've compared all the providers that offer cover for COVID-19 .

Travel Insurance Direct offers four policies to choose from, suitable for everyone from travellers on a shoestring to the luxury seekers amongst us. The Works, The Basics and Domestic plans are available for single trips and the Annual Multi Trip plan covers you for as many trips as you like over 12 months.

Even the best travel insurance policy has some things that are generally excluded. With Travel Insurance Direct, these include:

  • An existing medical condition not approved by TID.
  • Being intoxicated by or addicted to alcohol
  • Taking part in a riot or civil commotion
  • Mountaineering using support ropes, abseiling, or rock climbing

  • You riding on a motorcycle with an engine capacity greater than 250cc, without a helmet or where the person in control does not have a valid motorcycle licence

Make sure you review Travel Insurance Direct's policy wording for a detailed breakdown of what isn't covered, found under its list of general exclusions .

The easiest way to make a claim on your policy is online through the TID website. Have your insurance documents ready and follow these steps:

  • Head to https://www.travelinsurancedirect.com.au/Member/OpenSignIn
  • Log in with the email address and password you used when you bought the policy
  • Select "Make a new claim"
  • Answer a few questions and describe what happened
  • Check your email for further instructions
  • Upload your supporting documents
  • Review your claim and submit

Travel Insurance Direct offers a robust suite of travel insurance policies with cover that should be sufficient for most travellers. You've got unlimited overseas medical expenses cover, your choice of cancellation cover and up to $12,000 for luggage and personal effects. Plus, cruise cover is included as standard with unlimited cover for medical expenses including evacuation and repatriation.

TID has automatic cover for 40 existing medical conditions including asthma, diabetes (types I and II) and high blood pressure. If your condition isn't listed then you can still buy a policy but you won't be covered for any claim related to it. On top of that, many of the included conditions aren't covered if you've required hospitalisation or have experienced complications recently.

Where TIDs policies fall short can be found in its general exclusions. ATV or quad riding is out, as is riding a motorcycle with an engine capacity greater than 250cc. Travellers to South East Asia should take particular note, where motorcycle riding is a common form of transport. Policies are only available to residents of Australia under the age of 75 so senior travellers will have to look elsewhere.

Thank you for getting in touch with finder.

If you need to renew your travel insurance with Travel Insurance Direct, kindly contact them directly. Please note that there are policies that allow you to take out travel insurance if you’re already overseas.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

will be travelling to Bali. Does the insurance cover flight cancellation or delay as a result of volcanic ash?

Thanks for leaving a question on Finder.

If you buy a new travel insurance policy for Bali today, you won’t be covered for any volcano-related issues. This is because travel insurance is designed to cover unforeseen issues, and the Mt Agung eruption is a known event. It’s basically like trying to get car insurance after you’ve had an accident, and expecting to be covered.

Now for the good news: you can still get travel insurance for Bali . Should you bother? Definitely, because even if you’re not covered for the volcano, you’ll still be covered for things like medical expenses, cancellation costs not related to the ash cloud, lost luggage, cover for leisure activities and more, depending on the policy you choose.

Cheers, Joel

Hi do you cover volcanic ash

Hello Andrea,

Thank you for reaching out to us.

Currently, no brand in our panel offers cover for the ash cloud in Bali. However, our list of Bali travel insurance would give you an idea of which brands offered to cover in the past. Please continue to check our pages as we are continuously updating them for any new issue statements regarding the ash cloud cover from different insurance providers.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to us again if you have additional questions.

Cheers, Ash

I need to purchase medical cover for my son who just got married to an American and is living in US. What typ of cover is suitable??

Thank you for your question.

You have contacted finder.com.au, a comparison and information service and not actually TID. As a comparison and information service, we are not permitted to provide our users with personalised financial advice or product recommendations.

However, TID offers cover for Australian residents that are already overseas. You may compare TID and other travel insurance brands on our guide about travel insurance for Australians already overseas .

While looking for insurers, please make sure you read the terms and conditions of the policy to learn more and know if it is the right policy for you or not.

Cheers, Zubair

Europe 31 May returning 28 June. Single policy, aged 69. Need pre existing condition of CLL covered. Take one pill, no other treatment, no hospitalisation, not terminal, not against doctor’s advice. No other conditions except minimal blood pressure and under active thyroid, both treated for at least past five years without change. Can you offer a policy?

Please do not use this company. TID ripped me off big time. They do anything they can to avoid paying you, I ended up $20 worse off than if I never claimed, and thousand of dollars in medical expenses they would not pay. Go with anyone else but never TID!!! Clare

Hi Barbara,

Thanks for your question. Many of the brands in our panel offer cover for pre-existing condition. Please review our travel insurance for pre-existing conditions page for more information.

Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. Buying Travel Insurance Directly from the Company vs. Using a Comparison Site

Buying Travel Insurance Directly from the Company vs. Using a Comparison Site

Travel insurance companies offer their products for purchase on their own websites to make it easy for travelers to purchase their plans. You can also use a comparison site, which works the same as a flight comparison site like Expedia or Orbitz, to make your travel insurance purchase.

While each website is designed a little differently, they all ask for a few up-front details about your travel plans: when you’re going, how much it will cost, and where you’re going, before displaying a list of travel insurance plans to fit your needs.

Whether buying directly from a travel insurance company or purchasing through a comparison site, you can get immediate quotes, pay with a credit card, and receive an e-mail with your purchase confirmation and travel insurance plan documents.

No price difference when using a comparison site

You won’t pay any more for your plan if you purchase it from a comparison site versus purchasing it directly from the provider. Similar to your home or auto insurance, a comparison site is an ‘agent’ for the travel insurance company, earning a commission for assisting with your purchase. Either way, the price is the same for you.

Benefits of buying through a comparison site

A comparison site gives you access to many plans offered by a number of different travel insurance providers. Some of the features that make using a comparison engine attractive include:

  • Side-by-side comparisons of individual plans and coverages
  • Send quotes to other travelers by e-mail
  • Review travel insurance company and plan ratings
  • Make plan upgrade selections and see real-time price adjustments
  • Instant access to review plan certificates
  • Purchase immediately and receive an e-mail confirmation and plan documents

The primary benefit to using a comparison site is that you can compare quotes, ratings, and features from many companies offering a variety of products. You won’t, however, have access to every plan offered by every travel insurance provider on the market.

Benefits of buying directly from the travel insurance company

Buying directly from the travel insurance company’s website gives you access to all of the company’s plans at once. Some of the features that make purchasing this way attractive include:

  • Access to the company’s guarantees and customer support
  • Many, but not all, company websites offer plan comparison capabilities
  • Review plan descriptions and exclusions
  • Access to the company’s travel alerts

When you prefer a particular travel insurance provider, buying direct through the company’s website works well. You can start by visiting our t ravel insurance company reviews page for ratings and information.

  • There are benefits to both purchasing directly and using a comparison site
  • If you go directly to the company, you’ll have only their plans to choose from
  • Using a comparison site, you can compare travel plans from a number of companies

Is travel insurance worth it?

The right policy can protect your belongings, your bank account and your peace of mind..

On April 24, 2024, the White House established new rules for airlines , mandating automatic and timely refunds for passengers whose flights had been changed, delayed or canceled . That's a big relief to travelers, but there are still many unexpected situations where travel insurance can be a lifesaver before or during your trip.

"Travel insurance is often an overlooked investment until the unforeseen happens," says Beth Godlin, president of Aon Affinity Travel Practice . "It's designed to give travelers peace of mind and financial protection against travel risks."

A policy doesn't have to be expensive, according to Godlin, to add a layer of protection and security.

How much does travel insurance cost?

  • Bottom line

There are many options in the travel insurance marketplace: Aggregator site Squaremouth lets you get price quotes from different carriers and, because it receives a commission from the insurance companies on its site, users aren't charged any additional fees.

Allianz has both single-trip and annual plans, with a Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) policy that reimburses up to 80% of prepaid, non-refundable expenses. That's more than most similar plans on the market.

In addition to trip cancellation, Allianz's popular OneTrip Prime plan includes travel interruption, emergency medical care and emergency transportation. Children 17 and under are covered for free when traveling with a parent or grandparent.

AIG's Travel Guard® plans are great if you need to customize coverage: The mid-range Travel Guard Preferred plan pays out 100% for trip cancellation and 150% for trip interruption, with up to $50,000 in coverage for medical expenses and up to $500,000 for emergency evacuation. There's even a payout of up to $1,000 if you miss your connection.

Policy highlights

Travel Guard offers a variety of plans to suit travel ranging from road trips to long cruises. For air travelers, Travel Guard can help assist with tracking baggage or covering lost or delayed baggage.

24/7 assistance available

If you're booking a trip with an aggregator site like Expedia , review the details of any travel policy that's offered. Plans are usually based on the elements of the trip (hotel, flight, rental car, etc.) and can differ every time you book.

Travel insurance generally covers your expenses, your belongings and your well-being. When shopping for a policy, look for these benefits:

Trip cancellation

If your trip is canceled for a covered reason, a policy will often reimburse airline tickets, hotel rooms, rental cars, tours, cruises and other prepaid, non-refundable expenses. Covered situations can include illness or injury, the death of a family member or traveling companion, job loss, military deployment and even unplanned jury duty, according to Allianz's Daniel Durazo.

Cancellations can also be covered if a natural disaster, severe weather or airline strike prevents your carrier from getting you to your destination for at least 24 hours.

CFAR plans provide a lot more flexibility and typically reimburse 50% to 75% of your expenses. But they can bump up the cost by about 40%, said Durazo. Policyholders are also still usually required to cancel no later than 48 hours before their scheduled departure.

Trip delay

Should you experience a hiccup in your plans, your policy can provide some relief: Food, lodging and local transportation are usually covered if a delay is due to severe weather, airline maintenance or civil unrest.

"For a traveler to be eligible, they must be delayed for the minimum amount of time listed on their policy," said Squaremouth spokesperson Megan Moncrief. "Some policies are very lenient and provide benefits for any length delay, while others list a length requirement — usually somewhere between three to 12 hours."

Daily payout limits range from $150 to $250 per traveler, according to Moncrief, while the total policy limit can be anywhere from $500 to $2,000. Save any receipts to submit with your reimbursement claim.

Don't miss: The best credit cards with trip delay insurance

Trip interruption

Should you need to cut your trip short due to illness or injury, or if there's a family emergency back home, your policy may reimburse non-refundable expenses you forfeited.

It may also cover the cost of a one-way economy airline ticket home.

Baggage loss

Airlines are required to compensate passengers for luggage lost in transit, but a travel insurance policy may have a higher benefit limit. It could also cover you if your bags, passport or other possessions are lost, damaged or stolen once you've gotten to your destination., The Platinum plan from AXA Assistance USA has a $3,000 benefit limit for lost luggage, well beyond the $1,700 that airlines are required to provide on international flights. AXA has offices in more than 50 countries, with multilingual operators available 24 hours a day to help reschedule flights, book hotels and make other arrangements.

AXA Assistance USA Travel Insurance

AXA Assistance USA offers several travel insurance policies that include travel interruption, trip cancellation, and the option of cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage.

Travel insurance doesn't cover every loss: Cash is not reimbursable and many policies won't reimburse for expensive jewelry or heirloom items. Read your policy carefully to see what is included.

Medical expenses and emergency evacuation

If you travel within the U.S., your health insurance should cover any illness or injury you sustain. If you're traveling abroad, though, your plan may provide little or no coverage. The right travel insurance should cover doctors' fees and hospital bills, Durazo said.

The provider can also help coordinate care and ensure you're at a medical facility that's up to U.S. standards.

An emergency medical evacuation can cost anywhere from $15,000 to over $200,000, Durazo added.

New airline regulations in April 2024

The Biden administration announced on April 24, 2024 , that it had finalized new rules requiring airlines to issue cash refunds to passengers if their flights were canceled or significantly changed, their checked luggage was significantly delayed or if purchased services, like Wi-Fi, were not provided.

Refunds must be automatic and made via the same form of payment as the original purchase. Travelers must be reimbursed within seven business days if the refund is going to a credit card. (Other forms of payment can take 20 calendar days to be reimbursed.)   The new Department of Transportation regulations also require airlines and ticket agents to disclose upfront any fees for changing or canceling your reservation, seat selection, checked bags or carry-ons. The Biden administration has targeted junk fees across numerous industries, including credit card companies. It said the rule will help consumers avoid unneeded or surprise charges that can quickly add up and obscure the real cost of a seemingly inexpensive ticket.

A travel insurance policy typically costs between 4 and 10% of the overall price of your trip. The cost can vary:

  • Plans with higher limits and more optional coverage cost more.
  • A plan with a CFAR benefit can cost up to 40% more.
  • Older travelers typically pay more because there's more of a likelihood of a claim being filed.

Whichever plan you choose, read the fine print so you understand what you're paying for.

While regulations on airlines are becoming increasingly stringent about reimbursing travelers for delayed or canceled flights, that doesn't do you any good if it wasn't the airline that put a kink in your plans. Travel insurance covers numerous scenarios, from medical emergencies to tropical storms. It could be particularly useful if:

  • You've spent a lot on prepaid, non-refundable expenses
  • You're traveling internationally where your health insurance won't apply
  • You're traveling to a remote area
  • Your flight involves multiple connections or destinations

"When deciding if travel insurance is right for you, ask yourself how much you could stand to lose if you had to cancel at the last minute," said Godlin.

If you're not as concerned about risk, your credit card may offer built-in travel protection if you book with that card: Chase Sapphire Preferred® , Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Card and the  *American Express® Gold Card all come with trip cancellation and interruption coverage, among other benefits.

*Eligibility and benefit level varies by card. Terms, conditions and limitations apply. Please visit americanexpress.com/benefitsguide for more details. Underwritten by New Hampshire Insurance Company, an AIG Company.

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

Finding the cheapest travel insurance is often a priority for travelers hoping to protect themselves and their finances while away from home.

But is it better to err on the side of affordable travel insurance or opt for a more comprehensive plan? That depends on your needs .

On average, a comprehensive plan that covers some combination of trip cancellation and interruption costs, medical coverage and baggage protection (and perhaps a number of other things) will cost you 5%-10% of what you paid for the trip, according to NerdWallet partner Squaremouth, a travel insurance marketplace.

That means a comprehensive policy for a trip that costs you $3,000 could run you anywhere between $150 and $300. Factors like the cost and length of your trip, the age of the travelers and how much protection you want can significantly influence what you pay for your plan.

Ultimately, Squaremouth recommends “the least expensive policy that offers the coverage [travelers] need.”

Factors we considered when picking cheap travel insurance plans

We considered a few factors as we looked for the most affordable travel insurance plans.

Price: If your goal is to find cheaper travel insurance, you want the price to be affordable.

Breadth of coverage: The best budget travel insurance is typically going to be a plan that offers a wide range of protections at an affordable cost, ensuring you’re protected with at least some coverage for a wide range of scenarios.

Uniqueness or customizability : While many travel insurance plans have similar protections, some stand out for particular coverage that can be helpful to certain travelers, like those needing to Cancel For Any Reason , those going on a cruise, or travelers with preexisting health conditions. We didn’t spring for the priciest plans with broad, deep coverage; instead, we picked those that meet a sort of budget "sweet spot" when it comes to cost efficiency.

An overview of the best cheap travel insurance plans

We looked at travel insurance quotes for a hypothetical 10-day trip to Italy in October 2023. The traveler is a 40-year-old man living in North Carolina who spent $2,000 on the trip, including airfare.

Reliable but cheap travel insurance providers

1. axa assistance usa (silver plan: $70).

travel insurance direct the works

Why we picked it:

The $500 missed connection benefit is great for cruise and tour participants. It covers additional transportation, accommodations and meal costs when you miss a cruise or tour departure.

Full trip cancellation and interruption coverage, along with up to $25,000 for out-of-pocket medical costs and baggage coverage.

Among the lowest prices we found.

If you’re willing to spend a bit more than AXA's $70 Silver plan, a Gold plan only costs $19 more and gets you deeper coverage amounts and up to $35,000 in collision rental car insurance.

2. Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection (ExactCare Value plan: $56)

travel insurance direct the works

Cheapest plan we found while still offering a wide array of protections.

Includes a preexisting medical condition waiver.

Add-on rental car collision coverage optional for $10 per day. You can pick how many days you want the additional coverage — it’s not all or nothing.

At $56, this plan comes in at less than 3% of the $2,000 trip cost.

3. IMG (iTravelInsured Lite plan: $77)

travel insurance direct the works

Treats COVID-19 like any other illness, which is to say, if your claim accepts flu, strep throat or appendicitis as an acceptable, covered condition, the coronavirus is, too.

Covers costs related to trip interruption up to 125%

Higher than normal limits on dental expenses, at $1,000. If your teeth are your Achilles heel (or your biggest fear), this plan might be for you.

The iTravelInsured Lite plan doesn’t offer some of the bells and whistles that other plans do, like rental car coverage , Cancel For Any Reason coverage or waivers for pre-existing conditions. But you’ll have relatively solid across-the-board trip protections.

4. John Hancock (Silver plan: $93 for a mid-tier plan)

travel insurance direct the works

Mid-level plan (as opposed to a basic plan) at an affordable price for travelers who want more coverage without paying too much.

Includes an optional Cancel For Any Reason add-on for travelers wanting flexibility. It is a bit pricey, at half the cost of the insurance ($46.50 extra for a $93 plan).

Reimburses up to $1,000 for lost baggage , far more than many basic plans.

Add-on rental car coverage for $9 per day.

At $88, John Hancock’s basic (Bronze) plan isn’t particularly affordable. But for just $4 extra, you can tap into the benefits of a mid-tier plan at still less than 5% of the total trip cost.

5. Nationwide (Essential plan: $76)

travel insurance direct the works

Includes a preexisting conditions waiver.

Add-on rental car coverage for $90.

Covers trip interruption at 125% of the trip cost while providing comprehensive emergency medical and baggage coverage.

6. Seven Corners (Basic plan: $75)

travel insurance direct the works

On top of standard trip protections, it includes a relatively affordable Cancel For Any Reason option for $31.50 extra.

If you plan to rent expensive sporting equipment, you might consider paying $10 extra to cover lost, damaged, stolen or destroyed gear.

COVID-19 coverage reimburses you for costs incurred if you have to quarantine .

Rental car coverage comes in at an affordable $7 per day.

Seven Corners’ Basic plan stands out because it offers a little bit of everything, appealing to athletic travelers, those who need affordable trip protections, those who want the flexibility to cancel for any reason and those still concerned about getting quarantined due to COVID-19.

7. Travelex Insurance Services (Basic plan: $71)

travel insurance direct the works

Straightforward: What you see is what you get. This plan’s coverage has fewer rules and caveats than many.

While not sporting the highest coverage amounts, it offers a solid range of protections to ensure you get at least something back when your travel is disrupted or you have a medical emergency.

Offers add-on rental car coverage for $10 per day.

At $71, the Travelex Basic plan’s cost is just over 3% of the $2,000 trip’s cost.

If you want to get travel insurance at the cheapest possible rate, here’s a trick. Put $0 as your trip cost, Stan Stanberg, co-founder of comparison site Travelinsurance.com said in an email.

“When excluding trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage the cost of a travel insurance plan goes down significantly,” Stanberg said.

That means you won’t get reimbursed if you need to cancel your trip or if it gets interrupted. But you may still have access to the plan’s medical, trip delay , missed connection, baggage and other protections.

You’ll often find comprehensive travel insurance plans cost 5%-10% of your total trip cost, according to Squaremouth. This will often get you full trip cancellation and trip protection, baggage protection, emergency medical coverage and often other benefits.

Typically, the more you pay, the broader and deeper the coverage.

For many plans, you can purchase travel insurance up until you depart. However, to get access to the most protections possible, booking two days to two weeks after making your initial deposit is the best rule of thumb.

That means you won’t get reimbursed if you need to cancel your trip or if it gets interrupted. But you may still have access to the plan’s medical,

, missed connection, baggage and other protections.

Travel Insurance 101: How Travel Insurance Works

Maybe you’ve never used travel insurance before. Or maybe you’ve just purchased travel insurance and now you’re scrolling through your policy documents, wondering what it all means.

This guide explains the basics: how travel insurance works, how to choose a plan and how to get the most out of your coverage.

Allianz Global Assistance’s elite team of travel and medical experts can arrange medical treatment in an emergency, monitor your care, serve as interpreters, help you replace lost passports and so much more. Sometimes, they even save travelers’ lives .

A few things you should know about travel insurance:

  • Benefits vary by plan. It’s important to choose a plan that fits your needs, your budget and your travel plans. Here are definitions of all available travel insurance benefits .
  • Travel insurance can’t cover every possible situation. Allianz Global Assistance offers named perils travel insurance, which means it covers only the specific situations, events and losses included in your plan documents, and only under the conditions Allianz describes.
  • Travel insurance is designed to cover unforeseeable events — not things you could easily see coming or things within your control. If, for example, you wait to buy insurance for your beach trip until after a named hurricane is hustling toward your destination, your losses won’t be covered.

How Does Travel Insurance Work?

In most scenarios, travel insurance reimburses you for your covered financial losses after you file a claim and the claim is approved. Filing a claim means submitting proof of your loss to Allianz Global Assistance so that they can verify what happened and reimburse you for your covered losses. You can file a claim online or do it on your phone with Allianz’s free TravelSmart app .

How does this work in real life? Let’s say you purchase the OneTrip Prime plan, which includes trip cancellation benefits, to protect your upcoming cruise to Cozumel.

Once you’re feeling better, you gather the required documents — such as your airfare and cruise line receipts and information about any refunds you did or did not receive — and you file a claim . You can even choose to receive your reimbursement via direct deposit, a deposit to your debit card or a check by mail.

Sometimes, this process works a little differently. Travel insurance may pay your expenses up front if you require emergency medical treatment or emergency transportation while traveling overseas. Or, with the OneTrip Premier plan, you may be eligible to receive a fixed payment of $100 per day for a covered travel delay or $100 for a covered baggage delay . No receipts for purchases are required; all you need is proof of your covered delay.

Many travelers are wondering: Can COVID-19 be considered a covered reason for trip cancellation? And can travel insurance help if you become seriously ill with COVID-19 while traveling? Some of Allianz’s most popular travel insurance plans include epidemic-related covered reasons (benefits vary by plan and are not available in all jurisdictions).

The Epidemic Coverage Endorsement adds covered reasons to select benefits for certain losses related to COVID-19 and any future epidemic. To see if your plan includes this endorsement and what it covers, please look for “Epidemic Coverage Endorsement” on your Declarations of Coverage or Letter of Confirmation. Terms, conditions and exclusions apply. Benefits may not cover the full cost of your loss. All benefits are subject to maximum limits of liability, which may in some cases be subject to sublimits and daily maximums.

How to Choose a Travel Insurance Plan

Allianz Global Assistance offers a range of travel insurance plans that include different benefits and benefit limits. So how do you know which is best for you? To begin, get a quote for your upcoming trip. When you enter your age, trip costs and trip dates, Allianz can recommend a few plans for you. Then you can compare the costs and benefits of each.

If you’re a budget-conscious traveler who’s traveling in the U.S., you may like the OneTrip Cancellation Plus plan. It includes trip cancellation, trip interruption and trip delay benefits .

If you want protection in case of medical emergencies overseas but you have few prepaid trip expenses, you may consider the OneTrip Emergency Medical Plan . This affordable plan includes emergency medical and emergency transportation benefits, as well as other post-departure benefits, but not trip cancellation/interruption.

If you want the reassurance of carrying substantial travel insurance benefits, the best fit may be the OneTrip Prime plan. This plan also covers kids 17 and under for free when traveling with a parent or grandparent.

If you’re planning several trips in the next 12 months, consider annual travel insurance — like the AllTrips Prime plan. It gives you affordable protection for a full year of travel, including benefits for trip cancellation and interruption, emergency medical care, lost/stolen or delayed baggage, and rental car theft and damage protection (available to residents of most states).

How to Get the Most from Your Travel Insurance Plan

Don’t wait too long to buy travel insurance. The best time to buy travel insurance is immediately after you’ve completed your travel arrangements. The earlier you buy insurance, the bigger your coverage window. Also, you must buy your plan within 14 days of making your initial trip deposit in order to be eligible for the preexisting medical condition benefit (not available on all plans).

Read your plan documents before you leave. If you’re not completely satisfied with your plan, you have 15 days (or more, depending on your state of residence) to request a refund, provided you haven’t started your trip or initiated a claim. Premiums are nonrefundable after this period.

  • Travel insurance is intended to cover risks and financial losses associated with traveling.
  • Coverage can include trip cancellation, baggage protection, medical care, and emergency evacuation.
  • When filing a claim, be specific and comprehensive in your documentation to ease the process.

Whether it's a trip across the world or a trip across the state, having travel insurance provides major relief if things go awry. Flight delays, lost baggage, illness, injuries, and other unforeseen events can disrupt even the best-laid plans. With a major disruption comes the potential for unanticipated expenses.

Travel insurance and the coverage it offers can help keep you protected and save you money in the long run.

Travel insurance policies protect travelers from financial losses should something go wrong during their trip. You can customize which coverages you want to include, and there are several to choose from.

"Common types of coverage include trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage protection, coverage for medical care if you get sick or hurt during your trip, and emergency medical evacuation," says Angela Borden, a travel insurance expert and product strategist for travel insurance company Seven Corners.

Travel insurance plans offer nonrefundable payments and other trip-related expenses. While monetary compensation is a primary benefit, there is another valuable perk of travel insurance. It can provide peace of mind.

Your specific travel insurance plan (and its terms and conditions) will determine the minutia and specifics of what is covered. As with most other forms of insurance, a general rule of thumb is the more you spend, the better your coverage.

"Travel insurance can be confusing, so it's best to research a reputable company that specializes in travel insurance and has a long history of successfully helping travelers all over the world," says Borden.

Trip cancellations and interruptions

A travel insurance policy can reimburse you for a prepaid, nonrefundable trip if it is canceled for a covered event, such as a natural disaster or a global pandemic.

Trip interruption insurance covers you if you're already on your trip and you get sick, there's a natural disaster, or something else happens. Make sure to check with your travel insurance providers to discuss any inclusions, coverage, and more.

Travel delays and missed connections

Travel delay insurance coverage provides reimbursement for any expenses you incur when you experience a delay in transit over a minimum time. Reimbursements can include hotels, airfare, food, and other related expenses.

Medical emergencies and evacuations

Typically, US healthcare plans are not accepted in other countries. So travel insurance with medical coverage can be particularly beneficial when you are abroad. Medical coverage can also help with locating doctors and healthcare facilities.

Medical transportation coverage will also pay for emergency evacuation expenses such as airlifts and medically-equipped flights back to the US. Out of pocket, these expenses can easily amount to tens of thousands of dollars. Certain plans may even transport you to a hospital of choice for care.

Travel insurance generally does not include coverage for pre-existing conditions. That said, you can obtain a pre-existing condition waiver, which we will talk about later.

Baggage and personal belongings

Most airlines will reimburse travelers for lost or destroyed baggage, but be prepared for limitations. Travel insurance plans will typically cover stolen items, such as those stolen out of a hotel room. This may not include expensive jewelry, antiques, or heirloom items. Typically, airlines have a few days to recover your bag.

In the meantime, you can make a claim to pay for items like certain toiletries and other items you need to pick up. If your bag is truly lost or you don't get it for an extended period, you can file a true lost baggage claim.

A major perk on several travel credit cards is embedded credit card travel insurance . Typically, you will need to use the specific card for the transaction (at least with partial payment) for travel coverage to kick in.

Each card has specific rules on what exactly is covered. But one of the industry leaders is the $550-per-year Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card. Here's a snapshot of what is covered with this specific card:

  • Baggage delay: up to $100 reimbursed per day for up to five days if a passenger carrier delays your baggage by more than six hours.
  • Lost and damaged baggage: up to $3,000 per passenger per trip, but only up to $500 per passenger for jewelry and watches and up to $500 per passenger for cameras and other electronic equipment.
  • Trip delay reimbursement: up to $500 per ticket if you're delayed more than six hours or require an overnight stay.
  • Trip cancellation and interruption protection: up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip for prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses.
  • Medical evacuation benefit: up to $100,000 for necessary emergency evacuation and transportation when on a trip of five to 60 days and traveling more than 100 miles from home.
  • Travel accident insurance: accidental death or dismemberment coverage of up to $100,000 (up to $1,000,000 for common carrier travel).
  • Emergency medical and dental benefits: up to $2,500 for medical expenses (subject to a $50 deductible) when on a trip arranged by a travel agency and traveling more than 100 miles from home.
  • Rental car coverage: primary coverage for damages caused by theft or collision up to $75,000 on rentals of 31 days or fewer

More protections are included with cards with an annual fee, but there are exceptions. The no-annual-fee Chase Freedom Flex, for instance, includes up to $1,500 per person (and up to $6,000 per trip) in trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage.

However, there are some differences between credit card travel coverage and obtaining coverage from a third party.

"Credit card coverage does not typically provide travel medical benefits," Borden says. "For protection if you get sick or hurt while traveling, you'll want a travel insurance plan with medical coverage."

Whether you get your travel insurance in a standalone policy or through a credit card, it's important to review your plan details carefully. In either case, there may be exclusions and other requirements such as deadlines when filing a claim, Borden notes.

Knowing what travel insurance doesn't cover is as important as knowing what it does cover.

"Travelers should understand that travel insurance benefits come into play only if a covered reason occurs," Borden says. Most standard travel insurance plans won't reimburse you for the following:

Cancel for any reason (CFAR)

Cancel-for-any-reason travel insurance covers a trip cancellation for any reason, not just a covered event. your standard benefits won't kick in unless it's a covered event. For instance, you'll be reimbursed simply for changing your mind about taking a trip.

That said, CFAR travel insurance is not without its downsides. For one, it's more expensive than traditional insurance, and most CFAR policies will only reimburse you for a percentage of your travel expenses. Additionally, CFAR policies aren't available for annual travel insurance .

You can find our guide to the best CFAR travel insurance here.

Foreseen weather events

Sudden storms or unforeseen weather events are typically covered by standard travel insurance plans. There are exceptions to be aware of. For example, an anticipated and named hurricane will not be covered.

Medical tourism

If you're going to travel internationally for a medical procedure or doctor's visit, your travel insurance plan will not cover the procedure itself. Most medical travel plans also won't cover you if something goes wrong with your procedure.

Pre-existing conditions and pregnancy

Those with specific pre-existing conditions, such as someone with diabetes and needing more insulin, will not be covered by most plans. In addition, pregnancy-related expenses will likely not be covered under most plans.

That said, you can obtain a pre-existing condition waiver for stable conditions. In order to obtain a wavier, you will need to purchase travel insurance within a certain time frame from when you booked your trip, usually two to three weeks, depending on your policy.

Extreme sports and activities

Accidents occurring while participating in extreme sports like skydiving and paragliding will typically not be covered under most plans. However, many plans offer the ability to upgrade to a higher-priced version with extended coverage.

Navigating claims and assistance

When a trip goes awry, the first thing you should do is document everything and be as specific as possible with documentation. This will make the claims process easier, as you can substantiate and quantify your financial losses due to the delay.

For example, your flight home has been delayed long enough to be covered under your policy, you'll want to keep any receipts from purchases made while waiting. For instances where your luggage is lost, you will need to file a report with local authorities and document all the items you packed.

Cancellation protection also requires meticulous attention to detail. If you're too sick to fly, you may need to see a doctor to prove your eligibility. If an airline cancels a flight, you'll also need to document any refunds you received as travel insurance isn't going to reimburse you for money you've already gotten back.

Part of the benefit of CFAR insurance is the reduced paperwork necessary to file a claim. You'll still need to document your nonrefundable losses, but you won't have to substantiate why you're canceling a trip.

Each plan should be personalized to meet the insured party's needs. Some travelers prefer to stick to the bare minimum (flight cancellation benefits through the airline). Others want a comprehensive plan with every coverage possible. Before you buy anything, set your destination. Are there any travel restrictions or changes pending? Does your destination country require emergency or other medical coverage?

If the destination airport is known for lost or delayed luggage, travelers should keep important items in carry-ons. Lost or delayed luggage coverage protects insured parties in the event of a significant delay or total loss.

Second, check current credit card travel benefits to avoid redundancies. Savvy travelers don't need to pay for the same coverage twice.

Finally, consider your individual needs. Do you have a chronic medical condition, or do you feel safe with emergency-only medical coverage? Keep in mind, this does not include coverage for cosmetic surgery or other medical tourism. Do you have a budget limit for travel insurance? Asking and answering these important questions will help every traveler find the right product.

Most travel insurance plans are simple, and Business Insider's guide to the best travel insurance companies outlines our top picks. Remember, read your policy and its specifics closely to ensure it includes the items you need coverage for.

No one likes to dwell on how a trip might not go as planned before even leaving. However, at its core, travel insurance provides peace of mind as you go about your trip. While the upfront cost may seem significant, when you compare it to the potential expenses of a canceled flight, emergency evacuation, or a hefty medical bill, it's a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things.

Coverage for pandemics vary from policy to policy. Some travel insurance companies have specific provisions for pandemic-related cancellations, while others may exclude them entirely.

Sports injuries are often covered under travel insurance, but high-risk or adventure sports might require additional coverage or a special policy.

Travel advisories have different effects on your travel insurance depending on your policy. Traveling to a country already under travel advisory may invalidate your coverage, but if you're already traveling when a travel advisory is announced, you may be covered.

Travel insurance usually covers the cost of emergency medical evacuations to the nearest suitable medical facility, and sometimes back to your home country, if necessary.

Many travel insurance policies provide coverage for the cost of replacing lost or stolen passports during a trip.

Election latest: Police to probe potential 'misconduct in public office' in betting scandal - after fiery final TV debate

The Metropolitan Police is taking the lead in a "small number of cases" relating to the scandal around bets on the date of the general election. Last night, Sunak and Starmer traded blows in their final TV debate of the election, as campaigning intensifies with just seven days to go.

As we reported, "money-saving expert" Martin Lewis hit out at the Conservative Party yesterday for tweeting a clip of him talking about a "private" conversation about an unnamed Labour policy that they linked to tax rises.

Asked if that is a sign of desperation, business minister Kevin Hollinkrake replied: "Well, I think if we've tweeted something that's inaccurate, that's wrong. We shouldn't do that.

"We don't need to be inaccurate because the Labour Party has been quite clear. I saw Wes Streeting on Laura Kuenssberg a few, a week or two ago, who said quite clearly the manifesto is not the sum total of its spending plans."

Junior doctors are today beginning a fresh round of strikes in their long-running dispute with the government over pay.

They are asking for a path towards restoration of pay to 2010 levels, which would be a rise of around 35%.

The shadow health secretary, Wes Streeting, has said if Labour wins the election on 4 July, he will meet junior doctors on 5 July to reach a solution, and we asked business minister Kevin Hollinrake if the Tories will do the same.

He replied that government "should always have a discussion, always sit across the negotiation table".

He said an offer to resolve the strike has "already been made", a 9% pay increase was given this year, and there were "discussions about a further 3% on top of that", which he described a "fair figures".

But on the broader demand for pay restoration, the minister said: "What the junior doctors are asking for is 35%, which taxpayers, of course, would have to fund.

"I don't think that's affordable. And it'd be interesting to see what Labour would do in the same situation."

Mr Hollinrake went on to say that the timing of this strike is "interesting".

"I'm not going to judge some of his motivations for decisions. But it is interesting timing, and I regret the decision to strike because we know this doesn't help waiting lists, which we want to bring down.

"We are bringing them down now, but part of the reasons why the waiting lists are as high as they are is partially because of the strike."

We've just been speaking to business minister Kevin Hollinrake, and we started with last night's fiery TV debate.

Sky's Wilfred Frost put to him that Rishi Sunak might have showed what could have been, if not for the various distractions and mistakes.

But Mr Hollinrake said the PM was "clear" that "this is a vote about the future, it's not about the past".

He talked about broader challenges over the last four and half years, such as COVID and the war in Ukraine.

But of Mr Sunak, he said: "You've got somebody with a clear plan, somebody who's proven in the heat of battle, has been able to execute well and put things in place that are important to people - or somebody with no plan and no answers."

He said he understands the "move for change in the country", but in an appeal to the country, added: "It'll be a disaster if Labour will get in. Don't settle for that. Don't settle for that kind of solution. Don't surrender to that."

Frost brought the minister back to the past five weeks and the betting scandal that continues to dominate headlines, and asked if politicians should be banned from betting on politics.

He replied: "I'm not against a ban on politicians banning betting on politics, but I think we should have a proper debate, proper look at this and make a decision that everyone's clear on what's expected and what's allowed and what's not allowed and to make a decision from there."

Jeremy Hunt has donated a further £32,000 of his own money to his constituency party as he tries to avoid becoming the first sitting chancellor in modern British history to lose his seat.

Figures from the Electoral Commission show in the first quarter of this year, Mr Hunt made three donations to the Godalming and Ash Conservatives.

The chancellor gave £7,794 across two separate donations on 2 January, then another £24,451.30 on 8 February.

The 8 February donation is the largest single donation he has made to the local association, which has received £166,457 from him in total since 2014.

The vast majority of that has been cash donations, official records show, though £8,918 of it was non-cash.

Under electoral rules, MPs and candidates can donate to their local constituency accounting unit if they wish.

The Lib Dems said Mr Hunt is "throwing the kitchen sink at keeping his seat", amid warnings he could be ousted come polling day on 4 July.

The Surrey constituency has been a key target seat for Sir Ed Davey's party as they aim to demolish the Conservative "Blue Wall" in southern England.

The final TV clash of the election campaign was an ill-tempered shouting match, at least from Rishi Sunak. Sir Keir was more measured. More prime ministerial, perhaps?

As he had to as the underdog, Mr Sunak went on the attack from the start until the very end and unveiled a new campaign slogan: "Don't surrender…"

He said it no fewer than 15 times during the 75-minute debate. That's once every five minutes.

But just like the England-Slovenia Euros match 24 hours earlier, the result was a draw, 50%-50% exactly, according to pollsters YouGov.

And, some would say, that just like the England game, it was a 0-0 draw really.

Read Jon's full analysis here:

Sir Keir Starmer has accused Rishi Sunak of being "bullied into action" over the election gambling scandal after a question over politicians' "lack of integrity and honesty" in the final TV debate.

As the debate in Nottingham came to an end, the Metropolitan Police released a statement saying it was taking on a "small number of cases" to assess whether some of those involved have committed misconduct in public office (see previous post).

The first audience member to grill the two leaders at the BBC debate said allegations of betting on the election have left many "dismayed".

Sir Keir compared the scandal to 'partygate', saying: "You have to lead from the front on issues like this.

"When one of my team was alleged to have been involved and investigated by the Gambling Commission, they were suspended within minutes, because I knew it made it really important to be swift.

"The prime minister delayed and delayed and delayed until eventually he was bullied into taking action."

Mr Sunak responded: "It was important to me that given the seriousness and the sensitivity of the matters at hand that they were dealt with properly, and that's what I've done."

He added that he is "furious" and "frustrated" over the allegations.

Wednesday's debate was the last before voters go to the ballot box on 4 July. A Sky News snap poll suggests the public viewed their performance equally.

Read more from the debate here:

The Met Police has announced it will take the lead on investigating "a small number of cases" related to the Westminster betting scandal.

A spokesman said the force would "assess whether the alleged offending goes beyond Gambling Act offences to include others, such as misconduct in public office".

The Met is not taking over the entire investigation into bets on the timing of the election, the force said.

"The Gambling Commission will continue to lead the investigation into cases where the alleged offending is limited to breaches of the Gambling Act only," said the police spokesperson.

They added that more details would be provided today.

Good morning!

Welcome back to the Politics Hub on this Thursday, 27 June.

There is exactly one week to go until polls open across the country for voters to select the next government - hasn't time flown?!

There's still plenty that could happen between now and next Thursday, however, and the gambling scandal is very much still dominating headlines.

Here's what's happening today:

  • The Met Police has said it is taking the lead in investigating "a small number of cases" in the gambling scandal ;
  • As a reminder, the key issue under investigation is whether Conservative candidates and officials placed bets on the date of the general election using insider knowledge of when it would be;
  • The force said that while it is not taking over the wider investigation into breaches of the Gambling Act, it will lead on the probe into other potential offences, "such as misconduct in public office";
  • The scandal was a key issue in last night's leaders' debate, with  Rishi Sunak  reiterating that he is "furious" and "frustrated" over the allegations - but  Sir Keir Starmer  accused him of having been "bullied"into suspending two candidates;
  • The debate itself was not the knockout blow the embattled Tory leader needed to fight back in the polls, with YouGov's snap poll concluding it was a 50-50 draw, with Sir Keir Starmer emerging victorious on key issues;
  • Mr Sunak will be out campaigning in the East Midlands and Yorkshire today as he tries to convince voters to back his vision in the final days of the campaign;
  • Sir Keir will be also be out speaking to voters and the media as he tries to carry that 'ming vase' poll lead over the line without dropping it;
  • The battle for seats in Scotland is hotting up, with the SNP, Scottish Tories, Scottish Greens , and Scottish Labour  all on the campaign trail;
  • The Lib Dems  will also be out promoting their call today for an emergency health and care budget within four weeks of the election to increase NHS funding;
  • It comes on the first day of the latest junior doctor strike in their long-running pay dispute - and we expect Green Party  co-leader Carla Denyer to show her support on the picket line;
  • And Nigel Farage  is due to give a speech later before doing some constituency campaigning.

We'll be discussing all of that and more with:

  • Kevin Hollinrake , business minister, at 7.15am ;
  • Bridget Phillipson , shadow education secretary, at 8.05am .

Follow along for the very latest in the general election campaign.

Thanks for joining us for an extremely busy night here in the Politics Hub, including for the final debate between Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer before the general election next Thursday.

You can scroll through the page to catch up with the highlights.

And we'll be back from 6am with all the very latest.
