Your Questions, Answered

Parents / Alexander Huang

If you plan to breastfeed , a nursing pillow can help you find a comfortable position to feed your baby. These pillows provide the necessary arm and body support during feeding sessions—and they sometimes even double as a tummy time pillow. They come in a variety of styles, patterns, and colors, so we put 16 of them through multiple tests at home with breastfeeding parents to help you find the best nursing pillow for your needs.

Above all, a nursing pillow should be comfortable and supportive, so that all you need to think about is how much you love the little person looking up at you. “My guidance is: Position your body, position your baby, position your breast,” explains Meema Spadola, a postpartum doula and certified lactation counselor. “You’re going to know it’s the right pillow if you're not straining your back to fit the pillow.”

Look for a pillow that fits comfortably around your torso and provides adequate support for both you and your baby. Moreover, note that the cost of a nursing pillow differs by brand, material, features, and more—which we’ve broken down for you here. After using and evaluating the support, quality, ease of cleaning, and value of nursing pillows over a month of at-home testing, we narrowed our list to nine winners that help make breastfeeding experiences easier .

Never allow your baby to sleep on a nursing pillow, as that poses a risk of strangulation, entrapment, and suffocation. Keep all loose objects, soft bedding, and any other items that pose a hazard out of your baby’s sleep space, and be sure they’re alone and placed on their back in their crib, bassinet, or playard for every sleep.

In August 2023, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) released new safety recommendations for proper nursing pillow use, first and foremost warning against using them for sleep in a statement to Parents . Additionally, the CPSC requested new federal safety requirements, including:

  • That nursing pillows be firm enough so as not to pose a suffocation risk;
  • Have wider openings for the adult wearing them, reducing the risk of the baby's head getting trapped;
  • Have no straps for securing infants, which can lead to a false sense that babies are safe to be left alone on the pillow;
  • And have labels warning caregivers of the fall risks and suffocation hazards associated with the product.

Best Overall: My Brest Friend Nursing Pillow

Best for twins: twin z pillow, best for warmer weather: my brest friend original nursing pillow, best adjustable: frida mom adjustable nursing pillow, best looking: dockatot wedge nursing pillow, best washable: snuggle me organic feeding support, best for newborns: ergobaby natural curve nursing pillow, best budget: boppy anywhere nursing support pillow.

Why We Like It: This sizable pillow holds the baby high enough to keep your back in alignment, and it's very easy to remove the cover for machine washing.

But Take Note: The slipcover is hang dry only, and this pillow cannot double as an infant lounger .

Firm, supportive, soft, and roomy—the My Brest Friend Deluxe Nursing Pillow tops our list for several reasons, even if the name is a little silly. We love the wrap-around design with an adjustable velcro strap to accommodate various body types. Most important of all, it has a raised end that supports the baby’s head while they’re nursing. Plus, the spacious pillow had ample room to hold little ones at an ideal height for breastfeeding. While using this at home, our editor loved how the pillow kept her back in alignment during feeding without sacrificing comfort.

This pillow attaches around your waist—and stays put even if you stand up and move around the room—with a silent-release buckle, which we could effortlessly open with one hand. That means you don’t need to worry about a loud sound each time you're done nursing—because who wants to risk waking a sleeping baby? A nearby front pocket was a welcome addition to the nursing pillow, especially since we fit a 40-ounce cup inside it to stay hydrated during nursing sessions. This is where you can stash a baby bottle, too!

The zipper of the slipcover wraps almost completely around the pillow, making it easy to get the fabric on and off for washing (no nail breakage here!). While the cover is machine washable, the company recommends hanging it to dry instead of tossing it in the dryer. One drawback is that the not waterproof, so a major spill or spit-up could reach through to the foam pillow inside if you don't remove it quickly.

In testing we also discovered that you should position the strap to cover its Velcro closure, just to protect your and your baby's delicate clothing. Also note that this pillow cannot double as an infant lounger.

The Details:

  • Dimensions: 23 x 15.5 x 5.5 inches
  • Material: Polyester (slipcover), foam (pillow)
  • Machine Washable: Yes (slipcover)

Why We Like It: It provides great back support for feeding twins, and the cover holds up after many, many washes.

But Take Note: We found we needed an additional small pillow for adult neck support.

If you’re breastfeeding twins, you’ll need a nursing pillow with double the support. The Twin Z Pillow works for breastfeeding, bottle feeding, tummy time, infant lounging, and more. We loved the cushioned area in the middle of the pillow that doubled as special back support for our nursing tester. However, we found a small pillow was necessary behind the head for neck support. Still, there’s plenty of space for babies to lie comfortably in the football-hold breastfeeding position without making nursing more difficult.

A soft polyester slipcover kept the pillow in good condition, and it held up well against several cycles in the washing machine. All stains —there are a lot with twins—washed out of the material easily, and machine washing didn’t sacrifice the plush quality. Bonus: The slipcover is available in several colors, like  blue ,  pink ,  teal , and  green , with the pillow included. You can also buy the slipcover separately in a stunning  navy blue  or  royal purple .

  • Dimensions:  36 x 24 x 8 inches
  • Material:  Polyester (slipcover), pillow (not listed)
  • Machine Washable:  Yes (slipcover)

Why We Like It: It offers great support and stays in place, while the poly

But Take Note: No hook-and-loop strap, Air dry-only slipcover

The My Brest Friend Original Nursing Pillow features the same great support as its deluxe counterpart—our best overall pick—with a few differences. Similar to the company’s deluxe option, the original nursing pillow has a wrap-around design, giving back support while staying in place. Instead of the plush cover of the Deluxe, this version comes with a polyester cover that feels much cooler, making it a great choice for nursing during the warmer months.

While the deluxe has Velcro to keep the ends of the adjustable strap in place around the cushion, this version's strap is more like the strap of a backpack. It does have the same silent-release buckle, however. We love how the company kept the same raised head support for babies on one end of the pillow for a convenient nursing position.

This slipcover is easy to remove for cleaning thanks to a near wrap-around zipper. We followed the manufacturer’s instructions to wash the slipcover in warm water and didn’t notice a difference in quality, but we wish it were safe to toss in the dryer (it’s hang-dry only). We recommend purchasing an  additional slipcover , so you don’t have to wait for the first one to dry.

There isn’t much difference in cost between the deluxe and original My Brest Friend nursing pillows. This has same back support, raised head support for babies, and machine-washable slipcover—all at a lower price. Like the deluxe version, this nursing pillow cannot be used as an infant lounger.

  • Dimensions:  23 x 15.5 x 5.5 inches
  • Material:  Polyester (slipcover), pillow (not listed)
  • Machine Washable:  Yes (slipcover)

Why We Like It: Three inner layers allow you to go from a full, soft pillow, to a shorter, harder one as your baby grows.

But Take Note: We had to wrestle the cover back on after washing.

Finding the right height to feed a baby comfortably can be tricky, but thanks to the unique design of the Frida Mom Adjustable Nursing Pillow, it doesn’t have to be. This pillow has three interchangeable layers and different cushioning levels to ensure that you and your baby are comfortable as they grow and become more experienced nursers. The layers are essentially three foam pillows encased in the T-shirt-like pillow case, allowing you to remove the top layer and then the middle layer as the baby grows bigger. Using different levels had a bit of a learning curve, in testing, but it quickly became a feature we appreciate.

In addition, we loved the removable backrest that provided support while breastfeeding , as well as the adjustable strap—complete with a quick-release buckle—that helps the pillow adapt to different body types. The pillow features a soft, removable cover, though we found it difficult to get the cover back on after washing.

The cover also features several front storage pockets for burp cloths, a pacifier, and other small nursing essentials. There are additional pockets for heat packs ( sold separately ) to provide relief to the back and belly for lower back pain, postpartum uterine cramps, and C-section soreness.

  • Dimensions:  8 x 23 x 16 inches
  • Material:  Polyester and spandex
  • Machine Washable:  Yes (cover only)

Why We Like It: The cover comes in multiple attractive prints that don't scream baby gear.

But Take Note: Its decorative pleats needed ironing after one wash.

This DockATot nursing pillow is so stylish you could use it as decor, and no one would know. The cover is made of velvet and comes in multiple colors and beautiful patterns, and it features a removable tassel that acts as a chic accent to the overall look. While the function of a nursing pillow is more important than the aesthetic, it’s a big bonus when you can accomplish both simultaneously (just look at those pleats!).

We thought the cushion didn’t feel too stiff, and it fit ergonomically around the torso during testing. Because one side of the pillow is higher than the other for nursing purposes, you have to move the pillow to the other side when switching feeding positions. Additionally, those pleats we love so much needed ironing after one wash to replicate the brand-new look.

DockATot is a high-end brand, so the price tag is to be expected. However, because this pillow doubles as home decor, you get a multipurpose pillow for one price.

  • Dimensions:  22.5 x 13.3 x 6.7 inches
  • Material:  Velvet (cover), pillow (not listed
  • Machine Washable: Yes (cover)

Why We Like It: The whole pillow is machine washable.

But Take Note: The material could be softer, and it must air dry until damp before tumble drying.

Considering the inevitable spit-up and leakage that happen during breastfeeding, a nursing pillow has to be easy to clean. Instead of just having a removable slipcover, the entire Snuggle Me feeding pillow is safe to throw in the washer. The company recommends washing the pillow by itself, allowing it to air dry until damp before tumble drying on low. We liked the idea of washing the pillow in its entirety, though waiting on the pillow to achieve the “damp” stage can be time-consuming. Still, even after washing, the Snuggle Me nursing pillow maintained its high-end and modern crescent-shaped look.

The pillow’s fabric is organic cotton, and though it didn’t irritate or bother us or the little one nursing on it, we thought the material could be softer. We found the pillow needed readjusting when switching breastfeeding positions, but overall it felt supportive and firm with some give for the baby’s comfort, too.

Note that the company says this pillow is not safe for sleeping, propping or sitting a baby up, or tummy time use.

  • Dimensions:  20 x 18 x 6 inches
  • Material:  Organic cotton
  • Machine Washable:  Yes (pillow)

Why We Like It: A firmer cushion provides more support for newborns.

But Take Note: The curved shape can feel awkward and might be uncomfortable after a C-section.

The Ergobaby Natural Curve Nursing Pillow contains the word “curve” in its name for an obvious reason—it’s shaped like the letter C to provide several types of support, whether you’re breastfeeding, bottle feeding, pumping, or watching your little one do tummy time. In testing, the C-shape design felt awkward, and the pillow was almost too stiff, though we do appreciate the pillow’s firmness for those breastfeeding newborns who need extra support for their tiny heads and necks. In addition, the pillow's incline pushed the baby’s weight around our tester’s mid-section, so it may not be user-friendly for C-section parents and caregivers.

On the other hand, this nursing pillow had a solid construction and super soft fabric on the inside for babies to rest comfortably. There’s even a handle on top for easy portability and an adjustable waist strap for users to find the best fit.

Like other breastfeeding pillows, this one also has a removable, machine-washable cover, though we found it difficult to put the cover back on after washing. The pillow is also safe to use during tummy time, which we think makes the price tag quite reasonable.

Why We Like It: Compact size, Stretchy belt, Whole pillow is machine washable

But Take Note: Learning curve to find right adjustments, May take longer to dry

Nursing on the go just got a whole lot easier thanks to the Boppy Anywhere Nursing Support Pillow, which is compact and squishy enough to pack in a bag. (The company makes it clear that this product is not for sleep, so it never calls this product a “pillow.”) We found it lightweight yet supportive enough to provide comfort for babies to lie on. There was a bit of a learning curve to find the right positions, but after multiple tries, our editor got the hang of it. The stretchy belt is a triple threat: It holds the support in place during nursing, provides an adjustable fit for petite to plus-size parents, and doubles as a carrying or hanging handle for storage and portability purposes.

The whole pillow is safe to throw in the washer, but if you don’t have a backup, you may find yourself waiting longer for the pillow to dry. Nonetheless, you can’t beat the price of the Boppy Nursing Support Pillow.

  • Dimensions:  15 x 15.5 x 6 inches
  • Material:  Polyester and rayon mesh (cover)
  • Machine Washable:  Yes (cover only)

Nursing Pillows We Also Tested

  • Infantino Elevate Adjustable Nursing Pillow :  This nursing pillow felt well-constructed and was easy to clean, yet it lacked support, and the fabric was scratchy.
  • Blessed Nest Nesting Pillow :  While we loved the high quality and easy-to-clean cover, the pillow didn’t provide adequate support to keep a baby at breast height.

Eight testers evaluated 16 nursing pillows in the comfort of their homes for one month, assessing each on several attributes, including quality, ease of cleaning, support, and overall value. We also consulted with  Meema Spadola , a postpartum doula and certified lactation counselor, to find out what to look for in a nursing pillow.

First, we removed each breastfeeding pillow from the packaging to look for any rips, tears, or loose threads, while examining the quality of the fabric. Next, we washed the pillows or pillow covers (whichever the manufacturer recommended) to determine if the covers were removable, easy to clean, and difficult or easy to put back on.

We took time testing the pressure and softness of the pillow, as we wanted to know if the pillows felt adequately supportive, too firm, or too soft. While we understand a pillow's softness is a matter of personal preference, nursing pillows should always be stable and never so soft the baby “droops” or sinks.

Testers placed the pillow in a way that supported their backs—if it was meant to do so—making sure the baby was lined up against their body to belly and baby at breast level. Testers then breastfed their babies using the pillows, ensuring they didn’t strain their back, shoulders, arms, upper back, or abdominal muscles. Testers then switched sides to see if they experienced any strain. Finally, we carefully considered all other attributes compared to the price of each nursing pillow to assess overall value.

Factors to Consider in a Nursing Pillow

One of the most important factors to look for in a nursing pillow is its size and shape. Breastfeeding can put you in uncomfortable positions, so you’ll want a pillow that fits comfortably around your torso. According to Spadola, the right nursing pillow won’t cause you to strain your back to fit the pillow.

Consider different styles of nursing pillows. For example, some pillows feature a wrap-around design for 360 degrees of support while others resemble a shrimp shape, with one end fuller than the other, which may be a better fit for some breastfeeders. Overall, you don’t want a pillow that’s too bulky, and if you gave birth via C-section, you’ll want one that doesn’t press uncomfortably against your stomach.

The goal of a breastfeeding pillow is to provide you and your baby with stable support and comfort while nursing. However, nursing pillows aren’t a one-size-fits-all when it comes to providing support—the best fit will depend on the needs of you and your baby.

“If you’re straining to get up to the baby’s level or down to the baby’s level, it’s going to be harder for both of you,” says Spadola. “The pillow should put the baby against you. The baby should feel stable and supported, and their face should be against your breast. Your nipple should be resting on their upper lip. The baby should not be bobbling. You should not be hunching over to get to the level of the baby. If you are, that is a crummy pillow.”

Spit-up, leakage, spilled drinks—a lot can happen during breastfeeding, so you’ll want a machine-washable pillow or one with a removable slipcover. When the material is machine washable, it’ll make for easier cleanup for you in the long run. Double-check whether your pillow or cover is machine washable before tossing them in the washer and dryer, as you may ruin the pillow or cover during the process.

Versatility

Many nursing pillows can double as a pillow for tummy time (or even decor). However, it’s vital you check what the manufacturer recommends and follow those instructions. Babies should sleep alone, without pillows, bedding, toys, or bumpers, due to a suffocation risk.  The safest place for a baby to sleep is in a crib, bassinet, or playard that meets the Consumer Product Safety Commission standards.  If a manufacturer states you can use the pillow as an infant lounger or tummy time pillow, ensure you use it during supervised awake time and  never  for sleep.

What kind of nursing pillow is best?

The best nursing pillow provides support for both baby and the user, is comfortable to use, and is easy to clean when accidents inevitably happen. “In terms of softness: that’s a personal thing. The squishiness or firmness should not annoy you,” says Spadola. “Ask if this is a pillow you can use in another context when you are done nursing.”

How do I choose a nursing pillow?

A nursing pillow should fit your torso comfortably while keeping your baby at nipple level for easier breastfeeding and less strain on your back. To continue using a nursing pillow outside of breastfeeding, opt for a versatile one that doubles as decor or an option that works for tummy time use.

Do I actually need a nursing pillow?

While nursing pillows aren’t a requirement, they’re helpful to have on hand for nursing. Regular pillows often lack the firmness and support needed for breastfeeding, so you may end up using two, three, or more to achieve the necessary height for feeding. In addition, nursing pillows feature special designs to cater to the user’s unique needs.

How much do nursing pillows cost?

The price of a nursing pillow depends on the brand, material, and features, like adjustability, versatility, and portability. The nursing pillows we tested ranged from $30 to $139. Expect to pay more for higher-end brands, like DockATot, or for larger pillows.

Travel + Leisure / Emily Johnson

Sitting upright for hours on end or sleeping on unfamiliar pillows can be incredibly uncomfortable, but a reliable travel pillow can make your trip a lot more tolerable. Whether embarking on a red-eye flight, going camping, or looking to get a good night's sleep in your hotel room, the best travel pillows will be comfy, supportive, and portable.

We tested more than 40 travel pillows, looking at traits like comfort, durability, portability, and quality. We narrowed down the best options while using the accessory for road trips, long-haul flights, train rides, and even sleeping at home, making sure each option was comfortable for extended use. After catching some of the best Z's, we rounded up pillow choices for different types of travelers who are looking to get more rest on their future trips.

Best Overall

Infinity pillow travel pillow.

Infinity Pillow

The modular design of the pillow makes it easy to use to support the neck, chin, or back while sitting.

The cushioning is fairly soft, so the support isn't as stiff as memory foam.

Most travel pillows come in one shape and size, so we love that this one can contort in various ways to fit your needs. At nearly 40 inches long, the infinity design (yes, like the scarves worn in the early 2000s) can be wrapped once for less support or twice for the type of neck support found in traditional C-shaped pillows. We used the pillow during an all-day road trip and loved that we could wear it around the neck with a looser or tighter fit depending on how much neck support we wanted.

We also found that it's much easier to travel with the pillow since the closed ring shape makes it easy to wear around the neck instead of having to pack it away or risk it falling off. The bamboo fabric is extremely soft and breathable, so we never felt overheated or constricted, and the pillow is machine washable for easy upkeep after a trip. Our only note is that it's not a firm neck pillow like memory foam options, so it's not the most supportive if that's what you're looking for, but it still offers sufficient cushioning for keeping the neck upright. It also comes in a whopping 10 colors.

Best With Seat Strap

Cabeau tne s3 travel pillow.

The seat strap system keeps the pillow in place to prevent it from slipping around or falling off.

It can feel stiff at first and takes some getting used to.

This soft and supportive travel pillow is the perfect accessory for long trips, whether you're in the car or in the air. The pillow itself can attach to any headrest with adjustable straps to prevent your head from sagging or falling into uncomfortable positions while sleeping. There's also an adjustable chin strap for added comfort and security. The pillow's exterior fabric is soft and cozy yet breathable so you don't feel too hot or constricted — though it can take some time to find your perfect position.

We also love that the pillow case is machine washable. We tested this pillow on a long international trip where it really got tossed around on planes, trains, and buses, so it felt great to wash the cover at the end of the trip, making it feel as good as new. Despite its fairly large size, the pillow is also quite portable as it rolls up into a compact carrying case that you can attach to a bag's exterior or slip into larger backpacks and totes.

Most Supportive

Ostrichpillow go neck pillow.

The pillow has an asymmetrical design that can accommodate neck, chin, and head support preferences.

It might warm your neck if you run hot while sleeping.

The Ostrich Pillow Go Neck Pillow feels like sleeping on a cloud. This travel pillow provided the perfect amount of neck support and comfort when we took it on a flight, allowing us to get more rest than usual. The plush memory foam filling and asymmetric design can be easily adjusted to support the neck, chin, or head with the taller or shorter sides. The materials appear high-quality and luxurious, and it is easy to roll the pillow up to fit inside its compact drawstring sack. The pillow held its shape after being in the bag for long periods of time, which leads us to believe that it will hold up well with prolonged use. The pillow cover is removable and machine washable, but we air dried it to ensure it didn’t shrink (and had no issues putting it back on the pillow). A must-have for those with higher budgets, this pillow allows for better sleep and more comfort on flights.

Aeris Memory Foam Travel Pillow

It’s supportive and firm without feeling too stiff.

This would be best for travelers who know they prefer a firm travel pillow.

We love the comfortable and supportive Aeris Memory Foam Travel Pillow for travelers that like a firmer neck pillow. The buckle strap adjusts accordingly to fit around your neck and offers 360-degree support on the chin, jaw, and back. We loved how you can lean back in the car or plane, and the back of the neck doesn't fall backward. In addition to having exceptional support, the Aeris travel pillow folds into a small ball and easily fits into the included circular carrying case that you can clip onto a backpack or suitcase without being a noticeable nuisance. The travel pillow also comes with earplugs and an eye mask, and features a frontal slip pocket that you can store them in. After a trip, you can unzip and remove the carrying case to machine wash it, although we recommend air drying it to prevent any possibility of shrinkage.

Pluto Pillow Pod

Pluto Pillow

It boasts a cozy hood and built-in eye mask for total darkness even on bright flights.

It's one of the pricer options on this list.

Like the black-out curtains of travel pillows, this option comes with a hood and an eye mask that shields your eyes from any light, which is incredibly useful when you're trying to get some shut-eye on a busy flight. It has a soft neck brace that wraps around the neck with light support, and the hood goes on like a regular hoodie with a drop-down eye mask. Once our head was fully cocooned in the hooded pillow, we found that it was a game changer for travelers who have a hard time falling asleep with light or ambient noise around since it muffles sounds and blocks rays. While the space-helmet-like shape looks quite different from other travel pillows on the market, it's still easy to put on and offers excellent portability. Plus, this newer model features an easy way to clip the pillow to a backpack or luggage handle. One thing to note is that the price point is quite high compared to other pillows on the market, but the unique design and high-quality fabric and construction make it worth it for those with higher budgets.

Gingerlily Silk Travel Pillow

A silk pillow is the way to go to protect your hair and skin throughout your travels.

This pillow is 12 by 16 inches, so make sure you have plenty of room to pack it.

For those who love sleeping on silk pillowcases at home, this mini version for travel is an absolute must. Yes, it can be pricey to buy silk travel accessories, but it's also expensive to ruin a blowout and have to find a salon on vacation (and there's no price to be put on fresh, clean skin). This silk pillow is smaller than a standard pillow at 12 inches wide and 16 inches long, but you can still use it in a hotel bed, and it's perfect for trains, planes, and cars — just make sure you have the space in your personal item bag . After using this pillow for multiple long trips, it still shows no signs of loose stitches, fraying, or pilling. Rather, the pillow feels like it will last without ever going limp or flat.

Best Cooling

Cabeau evolution cool pillow.

The mesh air vents make the pillow breathable to prevent overheating.

It’s made of firm memory foam.

The Cabeau Evolution Cool Pillow is a great pick for travelers who get warm quickly. The pillow is designed to prevent heat from building up when you wear it as mesh vents in between two layers of cushiony memory foam filter in the air. We liked the breathability feature and moisture-wicking fabric and noticed that we didn’t feel overheated while using it on an airplane or road trip. While it took a moment to get situated, once the pillow was in the most comfortable position, it was extremely supportive and firm without feeling too hard. We especially liked the portability of the already lightweight pillow (thanks to its durable carrying case), as well as the mesh pocket for storing small accessories. Even after being rolled up and stuffed into its carrying case, this pillow quickly unfolds back to its original shape.

The Details: Memory foam | 9 x 7 inches | Machine washable | Carrying case included

Best Adjustability

Buyue travel neck pillow.

One side of the pillow has extra cushioning, and you can swivel it around to support any part of your head.

It comes with a drawstring bag to stuff it in, but the pillow still takes up a good chunk of space in a backpack.

With thick cushioning on one side of the pillow, the unique design of this travel pillow makes it easy to get comfortable in a small space where there isn't much wiggle room. No matter which way your head tilts when you sleep, you can adjust this pillow with the largest part of cushioning rotated to support the side or back of your head, or you can turn it to the front to prevent your chin from tipping forward or bobbing around. After testing the pillow on both road trips and long flights, we found that the fabric is breathable and soft for resting your head on, and we love that the cover comes off to toss it in the wash. Because of the thicker side of the pillow, it does take up a bit more space in a backpack, but it does come with a drawstring bag if you prefer to carry it outside of your luggage.

Samsonite 2-in-1 Magic Travel Pillow

It has a modular design to shift from a U-shape to a rectangular pillow, offering versatility at an affordable price.

The neck pillow might not offer enough support for some since it's on the softer side.

This microbead pillow from Samsonite can be used as a neck pillow if you're sitting upright or you can shift it into a rectangular pillow for leaning against a window or laying on a tray table. The handy two-in-one design already gets bonus points for versatility, but the budget-friendly price makes it all the more better. In testing, it was an effortless process to switch from the U-shape to the rectangle shape by flipping the pillow inside out. Made with polyester and microfiber beads, this pillow is shockingly lightweight and feels nearly weightless to carry around an airport. Because the pillow is on the softer side with the microfiber beads, we discovered it's not as supportive as a memory foam pillow, but it still offered enough support to prevent the neck from uncomfortably craning too far to one side.

Best Splurge

Purple harmony anywhere pillow.

This supportive pillow is comfortable enough to sleep on at night and would make any hotel stay feel more luxurious.

At over three pounds, it's quite heavy but feels weightless if you attach the strap to a backpack.

If you're looking for a travel pillow that is just as comfortable — if not more so — than your pillows at home, then this luxurious one from Purple is the one for you. It's a miniature version of the brand's best-selling Harmony pillow, and it boasts the same cooling gel and bouncy, neck-supporting feel as the larger version. During testing, we found this pillow to be noticeably cooling, breathable, and moisture-wicking, which can come in handy for camping. We wouldn't use this pillow during flights because of the plush, rectangular shape that wouldn't work well when sitting upright, but it would be ideal when you're laying flat, like in a hotel room.

It comes with a machine-washable pillow cover, and there is a travel case sold separately . Because this is one of the priciest pillows on this list, we do wish the travel case was included, but we do think it's worth adding on for its carrying straps and compression features. The pillow feels quite heavy on its own, but when you attach the strap to a backpack, it feels weightless to carry. You can also compress the pillow in half if you have the travel case, making it much more portable. Although this is a splurge for a travel pillow, we think it's worth the investment for travelers in search of a comfortable pillow with luxe features like a breathable honeycomb design, a moisure-wicking cover, and strong neck support.

Best Breathable

Sleep number travel pillow.

Sleep Number

The memory foam filling and synthetic fiber exterior let air pass through for superior breathability.

The pillow is large and was cumbersome to carry, especially for light packers.

It can get hot and stuffy on an airplane, so we love that the synthetic materials used to create this Sleep Number travel pillow are light and airy. The memory foam filling is bouncy and lightweight, and the soft fabric pillowcase is cooling enough to prevent overheating while sleeping in a plane, car, or train. We used the pillow on a long-haul flight to Ireland and found it was ideal for leaning your head against the window or on the tray table since the pillow is on the larger side. While the size offers extra cushioning and support like a regular pillow, it did make it slightly annoying to carry through crowded airports since it doesn't come with a compact carrying case. However, it does come with a drawstring bag to carry it separately or you can use the clasp to attach it to backpacks, suitcases, or other luggage.

Best for Camping

Therm-a-rest compressible pillow.

This mini pillow is ultra-durable and fit for rustic adventuring.

It doesn’t offer neck support like a regular travel pillow.

If you’re not a fan of the typical U-shaped travel pillow, the Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow is a great alternative. It resembles the rectangular style of a traditional pillow, and you can compress it down to easily transport it to the great outdoors, making sleeping in a tent more comfortable than ever. The recycled polyester fabric is light and breathable, and the foam filling — made from extra polyurethane foam left over after producing REI’s sleeping pads — provides a soft cushion for your head. We also loved how durable it is, especially for various uses like camping, flying, or taking a nap at home. While the pillow doesn’t come with a carrying bag, it has a toggle strap that you can use to compress it into a smaller size and a built-in cover that you fold the pillow into for protection while traveling.

Other Travel Pillows We Liked

Some travel pillows we tested almost made the cut but didn’t due to a few weaknesses, though they still might make suitable options for some travelers.

Hest Pillow : This standard pillow is on the softer side yet still provides support and comfort while laying on it, but the fabric is slightly itchy, and it’s bulky to carry around, even when compressed.

Cabeau Evolution Classic Travel Neck Pillow : While the memory foam is the perfect balance of firm and soft, we found this pillow to be just a bit too bulky for frequent travel.

Travel + Leisure / Daniela Galvez

Slip Jet Setter Travel Pillow : The silk material is luxurious soft and cooling, but the pillow itself is extremely bulky to wear and difficult to travel with.

Snugl Neck Travel Pillow : Made with soft and supportive memory foam, the pillow is ultra-comfy to use in-flight, but we had a lot of trouble getting it back into the carrying case.

Cushion Lab Travel Deep Sleep Pillow : The comfort level with this pillow is so high that we started using it to sleep on nightly at home. However, it's not very portable, and we had a hard time rolling it up into the case.

Our Travel + Leisure team tested more than 40 travel pillows to find the very best ones for every type of comfort-seekers. To thoughtfully curate this list, we researched and tested popular options, including pillows with the classic U-shape and rectangular ones, too.

Paying close attention to traits like comfort, quality, durability, and portability, we noted various features that stood out to us for both good and bad reasons. We looked for special features such as cooling designs, firmness, softness, or other claims by the manufacturer to check if they rang true. Our favorite pillows also kept their shape after being tucked away into a case and always sprang back into their original form with no signs of damage.

After testing the pillows on journeys like cross-country road trips and long-haul flights, we continue to capture testing notes every few months to update our articles accordingly.

Tips for Buying a Travel Pillow

Prioritize neck support.

When it comes to sleeping in planes, trains, or cars, you should focus on your neck and head support. When your head drops during sleep, it can leave you with a sore neck or even a headache. Your travel pillow should be supportive enough that your neck stays securely upright without feeling as though you're being squeezed.

Portability is key

Whether you pack light or stuff your suitcase full, a compact travel pillow that fits into a small carrying case is ideal for bringing along on trips. Of course, some travel pillows don’t compress, but they should still be easy to clip onto a suitcase or backpack and not bump into too many things if you’re traversing an airport or train station. It's always more convenient when a carrying case is included, especially if it has a luggage trolley sleeve or straps.

Consider the filling material

Travelers who like a firmer pillow should opt for a memory foam filling that can offer more support than an inflatable alternative. Microbead pillows can be just as supportive as memory foam ones, but they tend to be on the softer side and are more suited to travelers that like a little less structure while sleeping.

Think about how you plan to use it

Travel pillows are a relatively broad category, so you'll want to narrow down your intended use and travel habits before purchasing since they come in all different shapes, styles, and sizes. For example, if you often find yourself in the middle seat while flying, you'll want a pillow with lots of head support like a memory foam, U-shape pillow or an infinity style that you can adjust. However, window-seaters might opt for a rectangular pillow for leaning against the plane wall.

Travel pillows aren't just for flights, either. There are also rectangular options that can help make you more comfortable while camping or staying in hotel rooms, rental properties, or even friend's houses that might not have great pillows. They are also a road trip essential for every adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can generally find washing instructions on the tag of the travel pillow when you buy it. Removable covers can usually go through a machine wash, but many of our team members opted to air dry the cover to prevent any shrinkage that could happen in a hot dryer. If a pillow doesn’t have a removable cover, you can spot clean the pillow by using a wet cloth dipped in soapy water.

Most standard travel pillows have a semicircular shape that you wrap around the neck to support your neck, head, and chin. These U-shaped pillows often have memory foam or microbead filling, but there are also inflatable neck pillows. There are unique J-shaped travel pillows that are perfect for supporting the neck and head of someone sitting in the middle or aisle seat. In addition, standard pillows make great travel pillows for certain situations, and plenty of rectangular-styled pillows compress down for better portability.

Most travel pillows will come with carrying cases to compress the pillow, making it more portable. If the carrying case doesn't have a handle, it should still pack down small enough to fit in a personal item such as a backpack or a tote bag. Some pillows have a luggage trolley pass-through sleeve, which you can slip over the handle of your suitcase, while others may have a strap or a clip that you can attach to a backpack to carry it hands-free.

Some pillows are specifically designed to be worn in multiple different ways, but in general, it depends on your comfort preferences. You can wear a travel pillow backward , forward, or you can lean on it in the window seat — the most important thing is finding the most comfortable position for you.

Pluto Pod Travel Pillow: A First-Class Sleep Experience in Economy

Dorie Chevlen

By Dorie Chevlen

Dorie Chevlen is a writer covering home design. Her subjects have included scented candles, makeup mirrors, and—her favorite—popcorn makers.

I fly a lot. That’s a very chic thing to say, and I’m grateful that I can often visit far-flung loved ones and so many corners of the world.

However, the reality is probably less glamorous than what you’re imagining: I usually sit at the back of the plane, by the toilets, hunched over my laptop to meet a deadline, with nothing but a smashed PB&J to nourish me because I will not abide the indignity of paying $6 for a canister of Pringles.

The only respite from this winged hell would be to sleep. Not just to escape the barbarity of the experience but also to recover some of the hours lost to the time zone upon landing. But I’ve never been able to sleep on a flight.

I thought that sleep was a privilege reserved for the first-class passengers in their sequestered cabins, or the pharmaceutically aided, or those lucky freaks who somehow overcome the bright lights, the stiff seats, the crying infants, and the constant overhead announcements. So I took on this assignment with (respectful) skepticism. I agreed to try the Pluto Pod Travel Pillow , a slightly ridiculous-looking contraption that claims to help you sleep in non-ideal environments, such as airplanes.

I tested the travel pillow on an 11-ish-hour flight from Los Angeles to London (and back), which is miserable even in first class but downright inhumane in economy—the perfect laboratory. I could barely believe it, but the impossible happened: I slept nearly 6 hours straight.

Pluto Pod Travel Pillow

An all-in-one neck pillow, eye mask, and hoodie.

This light-blocking neck pillow looks like something an astronaut might wear, and we think it could keep us snoozing in coach even on an economy flight to the moon.

Buying Options

A supercharged neck pillow.

A person wearing a black Pluto Pod Travel Pillow with the eye mask pulled over their eyes.

At first glance, the Pluto Pod Travel Pillow seems … a bit much. It’s essentially a very thick neck pillow with a padded hood, plus a pull-down eye mask. Even rolled up into itself and snapped closed, it makes for a bulky burrito. (Actually, a good size comparison would be a party-size bag of Doritos.) One of our recommended travel pillows , the Trtl Pillow , takes up half as much space.

But what the Pod does with that space is nothing short of miraculous. The neck pillow part of the Pod, which secures in front with Velcro, sits flush against my chin, or the side of my cheek depending on how I tilt, cradling my head gently and securely while snoozing. And since the support surrounds your neck on both sides and the front, unlike the Trtl Pillow, it allows you to lean your head in any position while sleeping without having to adjust.

For those who have tiny heads, like I do, the height of the hood part is adjustable (you just clip the back portion to fold back some of the material). But even worn in its fully extended size, I felt comfortable; it just meant that instead of the pull-down screen covering only my eyes, it covered my whole face. Given that UV rays can permeate plane windows , I figure the more coverage, the better.

Did I feel a little stupid wearing this thing? Absolutely. But if you’re also feeling hesitant, I promise that once you have it on your head, you aren’t going to even see your seat neighbor, let alone worry about their sartorial judgment. The eye mask offers near-complete light blocking, and when it’s rolled up, the sides of the hood basically block out all peripheral vision, transporting you into your own little world.

But it’s bulky (and pricey)

The Pod is great, but even great things aren’t perfect. The first detraction is its bulkiness. We usually avoid recommending single-use travel gadgets like the Pod, because they’re hard to pack and (usually) used only during the flight. But since you can wear the Pod onto the plane around your neck, or else strap it around the handle of your carry-on, it’s a relatively easy-to-overcome hurdle.

For some, the Pod’s price will be the dealbreaker: At nearly $150, it’s certainly not cheap; in comparison, the Trtl Pillow plus the Nidra Deep Rest Eye Mask, our top pick, would cost about $80 in total.

The last issue is one of vanity: It made my hair flat and a little staticky. But who cares? The uninterrupted sleep was worth it.

As I complete this piece, I am booking my usual, miserable red-eye flight to Ohio from Los Angeles for my grandmother’s birthday. In the past, I would have used this as evidence for why I’m the most devoted grandkid—traveling the farthest, suffering the most. But with my Pod in tow, I’m actually looking forward to the journey. Maybe I’ll use it to catch up on some beauty sleep.

Do I Need a Pillow-Top Mattress?

Portrait of Amelia Jerden

I was recently chatting with someone at my yoga studio about which mattress she should buy, and when I asked what she was looking for, she told me that she likes a soft mattress, “like a pillow top.” That connection she made — between softness and pillow tops — is really common. Most people hear “pillow top” and, even without knowing anything about mattresses , can assume it means the bed is softer. That’s a logical assumption and one that I also made before I started writing about mattresses. But having tested dozens of different mattresses of all types, I have often wondered how much of a difference pillow tops really make. They certainly aren’t the only soft mattresses out there — and they seem to be more expensive than other styles. So I am setting out to answer the question of what exactly is a pillow-top mattress, and are they really worth buying?

What makes a pillow-top mattress different from other mattresses?

What makes a pillow-top mattress different from other styles of mattresses is essentially a minor construction detail. A pillow top is an additional comfort layer sewn directly onto the top of the mattress. It’s usually made with foam, fiberfill, or another soft material and is tufted to create a plush and pillowlike surface. It’s as if you attached a mattress topper permanently to the bed. You can usually spot a pillow top by the small, V-shaped cavity between layers of the mattress. The pillow top is stitched so that there are two separate layers (the pillow top and the rest of the mattress), rather than a seamless mattress with all the layers underneath one cover.

Pillow tops were originally added to mattresses to make them feel softer, back when firm innerspring mattresses made up the majority of the mattress market in the United States. According to the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA), innerspring mattresses made up as much as 92 percent of mattress sales in the 1970s and early 1980s. And it wasn’t until the 1970s that pillow tops really started to enter the picture. According to ISPA , in the first half of the 20th century, “mattress producers seemed to be in something of an arms race when it came to making ever-firmer mattresses.” In the summer of 1977, the editors of Bedding magazine started to see a shift toward manufacturers using terms like “gently firm” and incorporating pillow tops, indicating the beginning of mattresses starting to get softer. Innersprings generally have a comfort layer over the coils, but a pillow top is a great way to make one feel much softer, since a bed made primarily with coils tends to lean on the firm side. By the mid-’90s, pillow tops were becoming popular , as customers wanted more luxurious mattresses — and were willing to spend more on them.

Aaron Masterson, founder of Local Furniture Outlet , told me that from his experience selling mattresses over the past 20 years, it’s true that pillow-top mattresses used to be much softer than others. But nowadays, it’s less of a firmness or comfort indicator and more of a marketing tactic. To the average consumer, “pillow top” implies a higher quality, a better value, and a softer mattress. To illustrate the point, he told me that if you put two mattresses next to each other that are exactly the same, but one has a pillow top, most people will be drawn toward the pillow top because of that perceived value. Masterson also pointed out that the pillow-top mattresses on the market today can range widely in how firm they feel — there are even pillow-top mattresses marketed explicitly as being firm. For example, Serta sells its Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress with a pillow top in plush, medium, and firm models. The “pillow top” feature of that mattress doesn’t indicate much about how firm or soft the bed is going to feel; rather, it’s a difference mostly in how the mattress looks. “The biggest change is that pillow top used to be synonymous with softness,” Masterson said, “but now it’s more of a visual.”

Are there any disadvantages to a pillow-top mattress?

The main disadvantage for pillow-top mattresses is the potential of the pillow top starting to sag and wear out before the rest of the mattress. Some advocate against them entirely for this reason. According to a survey by Sleep Like the Dead of consumer experiences, at least 30 percent of pillow-top mattress owners reported sagging or compression within the first three years of owning the mattress. For non-pillow-top owners, 17 percent reported sagging and compression within the same time frame. That’s not a drastic difference, but it does seem significant. Anecdotally, it seems like a common issue — there is lots of discussion on Reddit threads and other forums about sagging pillow tops. One staffer here at the Strategist even ran into an issue with a sagging pillow-top mattress recently. However, it’s worth noting that a lot of durability also comes down to materials and quality of construction (as well as how well the mattress is cared for), whether the mattress has a pillow top or not.

Pillow tops can often be more expensive than other beds. The same Sleep Like the Dead study found consumers reported pillow-top mattresses being 30 percent more expensive on average, compared to non-pillow-top mattresses. It’s easy to see this when you are shopping for a mattress, since brands frequently offer a pillow-top version as an upgrade to a non-pillow-top mattress for an additional charge. However, if you compare across brands, you can easily find pillow-top mattresses that are less expensive than non-pillow-top mattresses, simply because some brands are more expensive on the whole than others.

Another commonly cited con for pillow-top mattresses is that they can’t be flipped, because the pillow top is only on one side of the mattress — and so if you flip it over, you’ll be sleeping on the firm coils. This is definitely a con for the pillow top, but frankly, it’s a con for the majority of mattresses on the market. According to BedTimes magazine , the vast majority of mattresses available now are one-sided and can’t be flipped. From my own experience reviewing mattresses, this rings very true — there are some “flippable” mattresses out there, but most are designed to let you swap between firmness levels (like Layla or the Plank mattress) rather than flip the mattress to increase the longevity of the mattress. So the advice your parents probably gave you to flip your mattress periodically is no longer relevant for most mattresses, pillow tops or otherwise.

Can I just add a mattress topper to my bed?

Probably. If you want a little extra softness or cushioning on your mattress without risking the sewn-on pillow top wearing out, a mattress topper is an easy solution. The only real con for a topper compared to a pillow top is that a topper can shift on the surface of the mattress. But that’s not that big of a deal, especially if you get one with straps to hold it in place. If the topper wears out, it’ll be much easier to replace since it isn’t permanently attached to your mattress. If you want something that’ll give your bed the same tufted, pillow-y effect as a pillow-top mattress, I’d recommend something plush with baffle-box stitching, such as the Coop Retreat mattress topper, rather than a solid slab of memory foam.

What’s the difference between a pillow top and a Euro top?

A Euro top is a specific style of pillow top. It can also be called a tight top, because the main difference is that a Euro top is stitched flush to the rest of the mattress, rather than having the defined cavity that a traditional pillow-top mattress has. This difference in stitching can give the Euro-top mattress a slightly more boxy and uniform look than the traditional pillow top. They may also be slightly more durable, since they are more integrated into the mattress. Sleep Like the Dead found Euro tops offered better edge support compared to traditional pillow tops, and edge support can be a good indicator of durability.

According to Masterson, this difference in stitching means the Euro top is cheaper to manufacture too. This makes sense, as the stitching to make the traditional pillow top requires more intricacy, which in manufacturing generally means a higher price. Given that pillow tops generally have cache as a perceived value-add with consumers and the cheaper manufacturing of the Euro top, Masterson told me that Euro tops have also become more popular as a sort of sub-marketing tactic within the broader pillow-top marketing strategy. It’s basically another way to make a mattress seem more luxurious, but it requires less effort on the manufacturer’s part. On top of that, Masterson said since around 2009, many manufacturers have started simply adding a second tape edge (the thick, raised stitching around the edges of a mattress that hold different layers together) three to four inches below the top tape edge and calling it a Euro top. This again reinforces the idea that a lot of the purpose behind pillow tops and Euro tops is ultimately to provide an appealing visual and a marketing tactic.

Is it worth getting a pillow-top mattress? Who should buy one?

All that being said, just because the pillow top is a bit of a marketing tactic these days doesn’t mean pillow-top mattresses are inherently bad. As Masterson told me, you probably just don’t want to let whether or not a mattress has a pillow top be the reason you buy it. Ultimately, it all comes down to how you feel on the mattress — pillow top or no. I heard the same thing from the CEO and founder of Earthfoam , Karl Shevick, who told me he wouldn’t encourage consumers to take pillow tops into consideration when mattress shopping as it is mainly a “cosmetic detail.” From my own experience testing mattresses, I pretty much agree with Masterson and Shevick. I’ve tried pillow-top mattresses that I thought were really nice and I’ve also tried non-pillow-top mattresses that I thought were really nice. And I’ve definitely tested my fair share of non-pillow-top mattresses that were very soft, so you really shouldn’t feel confined to pillow tops if soft is what you’re after. Even if you like the tufted look of a pillow top, there are plenty of mattresses out there with tufted or quilted covers that aren’t pillow tops. Mattress construction and technology has changed a lot since the pillow top’s rise to prominence in the 1970s through 1990s — I think the balance of support and softness most pillow-top shoppers are looking for can be accomplished through your run-of-the-mill hybrid mattress, which generally utilize individually wrapped coils for a support layer and one or more layers of foam for a soft comfort layer.

Essentially, no one should buy a pillow top mattress, because it’s not a feature that will have any effect on how your mattress feels. The important thing is just to know what you’re looking at and understand that the pillow top is mostly decorative, will likely cost you more, and has some potential of wearing out. If you really want that pillow-top look — go for it. But as Masterson said to me, your sheets are going to cover it anyway.
