Real-Life Travelers Find ‘Firsts That Last’ in North Carolina

They embraced unexpected firsts, too. Their first time flying kites and paddling a kayak. Their first time climbing a lighthouse. Their first time reveling in the sense of freedom that comes from living so fully in the moment that cell phones and notebooks were out of mind’s reach.

“Peyton and I could connect with each other without any phones or iPads,” said Craig, who serves in the Ohio Army National Guard. “We actually got to have a good time together without any distractions.”

With the April 2 launch of the “Firsts That Last” campaign, Visit North Carolina documents real-life travelers who come to the state for the first time to experience a first in their lives. The concept taps the power of firsts to create memories that last.

“Firsts are like magic in the way they stir our souls,” said Wit Tuttell, executive director of Visit North Carolina. “They create powerful memories. North Carolina is an endless source of experiences that add richness to a traveler’s life story.”

The public will first meet Craig and Peyton plus the other sets of travelers in print and digital ads and in 30- and 60-second spots, which will be shown on TV and in movie theaters. The ads also refer people to VisitNC.com to view two-minute films with a story arc.

The website also includes itineraries. Craig and Peyton journeyed to the Outer Banks to see the ocean , a trip that tightened their bond as they experienced other firsts — flying a kite, climbing a lighthouse and seeing wild horses that roam the beach. Newlyweds Chris and Andrea Beall , who are blending a family with five children in Auburn, Alabama , explored waterfalls and other wonders in forests near Brevard , Mills River and Saluda . New York musicians Zac Zinger and Tomo Akaboshi traveled to Chapel Hill , Benson and Saxapahaw for a moonshine experience in which they savored serenity at local farms and the fruit of the land at tables and tasting rooms.

The travelers, who were recruited through agencies that specialize in finding real people for projects that require authentic voices, bring essential truths about travel to life.

“With ‘Firsts That Last,’ the experience itself is just the beginning,” Tuttell said. “When you see the videos of Peyton and Jazmene and the other travelers, you appreciate the positive effects travel has on our lives. It satisfies a vital need to feel excitement or tranquility or closeness with those we love, and it helps us to discover things we never knew about ourselves. We want people to explore the many firsts they can find in North Carolina . The memories are sure to last.”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Visit North Carolina is launching a new film campaign, aiming to bring more visitors to the state as tourism bounces back.

Visit North Carolina's 'Firsts That Last Film Series’  seeks to show the meaningful experiences travelers can have here. The series is based on people's true experiences on their first vacation to North Carolina.

"Seeing is believing so our goal with these films is to make them see how important it is that they choose North Carolina for their next upcoming trip and what it will mean to them and their friends and family that they bring with them,” Scott Peacock, director of marketing for Visit North Carolina, said.

Visit North Carolina is hoping these short films, made in partnership with documentary filmmakers across the state, capture the interest of tourists and create a connection to North Carolina.

According to Visit North Carolina, 80% of North Carolina’s first-time travelers return to the state. Enduring connections explain why so many of North Carolina’s first-time travelers return to the state again and again,  according to Visit NC Director Wit Tuttell.

"There's really no other place that can offer you any kind of experience that you might want on the East Coast, and that's why North Carolina, we feel, offers a great opportunity for those first memories and those first experiences that will last a lifetime and make you want to come back to North Carolina year after year after year,” Peacock said.

The state is looking to rebound from the devastating toll COVID-19 took on tourism in 2020. Visitor spending in North Carolina dropped 32% in 2020 amid the pandemic to $19.96 billion, according to Visit North Carolina.

Through it all though, North Carolina managed to hang on to its spot as the fifth most visited state in the country, behind New York, Texas, Florida, and California, thanks in part to its destinations with outdoor activities.

"We were able to kind of gain that market share, you know, that we maybe lost from the urban areas in the outdoors and nature that we have to offer where restrictions don't matter as much,” Peacock said. “You don't have to wear your mask, you know, at times when you're out in the, you know, hiking in the wilderness or when you are on the beach, etc."

ALSO ON WCNC CHARLOTTE : 'It's a good time to get in the market' | There might be some good news for those looking to buy a home

Peacock said urban areas like Charlotte are making a strong comeback this year, with business travel, conventions, festivals, live music concerts, big events, and more resuming once again.

Charlotte is expected to be featured in the next few months in the 'Firsts That Last Film Series.' The series can be viewed on VisitNC.com.

2019 nc travel guide leads to ‘firsts that last’.

visit nc firsts that last

RALEIGH, N.C. (December 17, 2018): From a come-to-life cover to a 57-item bucket list, the “ Official 2019 North Carolina Travel Guide” inspires travelers to seek first-time experiences that create enduring memories in destinations from the mountains to the sea. The guide was released today in print and digital editions.

“The ‘ Firsts That Last ’ theme goes beyond highlighting North Carolina’s historic firsts to celebrating the personal firsts that come with traveling across the state,” said Wit Tuttell, executive director of Visit North Carolina . “People will forever connect place with a first sip of Cheerwine or moonshine, hearing music and tracing its genes to where it’s performed, or riding into the scenery on horseback. It’s all about immersing yourself in the moment and discovering something new.”

Travelers can take more inspiration from sweepstakes that embody the guide’s three covers, which come to life via the free augmented reality app Layar . The app launches 20-second videos that show gliding from the dunes, indulging in craft cocktails, and rappelling down a waterfall. The correlating sweeps, which run through December 2019, are prized with:

  • An Outer Banks stay with hang-gliding lessons and passes to Wright Brothers National Memorial.
  • A Raleigh getaway with destination dining, craft beer and cocktails and jeans from Raleigh Denim.
  • A trip to the Polk County foothills for ziplining, rappelling, rafting and wine tasting.

The guide fashions a meeting place for dreamers and trip planners alike. Vibrant photos and text capture the energy of North Carolina’s urban centers, explore the charms of its nooks and crannies, turn on the appetite for farm-grown fare and artisan chocolate and point the way to distinctive shopping. The pages lead to regional directories that list accommodations and attractions in hundreds of destinations. A two-page map lays out major roads, bodies of water, parks and cities and towns.

The “Official 2019 North Carolina Travel Guide” is free. The 176-page print edition is available at the state’s nine Welcome Centers ; it can also be ordered at VisitNC.com and 800-847-4862 (800-VISITNC). Readers can also link to a digital magazine version at VisitNC.com . The digital version, which includes all three covers, is enhanced by information pop-ups, a social media share feature, search functions and clickable URLs. Responsive design technology automatically adapts the digital guide to desktop, mobile and tablet devices for a seamless, user-friendly experience, no matter how readers access it.

The 2019 Travel Guide, the official guide for North Carolina’s state tourism office, was produced by Meredith Travel Marketing. It was financed by private industry support from 78 advertisers. Listings for the 875 attractions and 2,750 accommodations and campgrounds were provided for free. The self-mailer format for the 500,000 printed copies reinforces the green initiatives of Visit North Carolina, which is part of the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina. The EDPNC is contracted by the N.C. Department of Commerce to recruit new businesses, support existing and start-up businesses, connect exporters to global customers, and attract travelers from all over the world.

Tourism remains one of the state’s most vital industries with economic activity and employment generated in each of the state’s 100 counties. In 2017, domestic travelers to North Carolina spent $23.9 billion, which accounts for 225,170 jobs for North Carolinians. State and local tax revenues, as a result of visitor spending, topped $1.2 billion in 2017. The effect of the tax revenue is $512 in annual household savings for the state’s residents. North Carolina ranks sixth in total person-trip volume by state behind California, Florida, Texas, New York and Pennsylvania.

NC tourism slogan 'Firsts that last' showcased in new travel guide

Rappelling in Polk County is depicted on one of three covers for the new "Official 2019 North Carolina Travel Guide" released Tuesday in print and online by Visit North Carolina, a tourism development program of the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina.

One of three covers to the just-released tourism guide to North Carolina features rappelling in Polk County.

According to a press release, the new guide "inspires travelers to seek first-time experiences that create enduring memories in destinations from the mountains to the sea."

"The 'Firsts That Last' theme goes beyond highlighting North Carolina's historic firsts to celebrating the personal firsts that come with traveling across the state," said Wit Tuttell, executive director of Visit North Carolina. "It's all about immersing yourself in the moment and discovering something new."

The "Firsts That Last" slogan and theme was first announced by Visit North Carolina in late April.

One of the new guide's three covers features "a trip to the Polk County foothills for ziplining, rappelling, rafting and wine tasting," according to the group. The other two covers depict hang-gliding on the Outer Banks and a Raleigh restaurant.

The covers are linked to a free augmented reality app called Layar, which launches 20-second videos of each of the three tourism sites.

Broadslab Featured in VisitNC Campaign

We have been sitting on some very exciting news for a few months that we are finally ready to release. The North Carolina state tourism office, officially the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina (EDPNC), has announced their annual marketing campaign called "Firsts That Last". The Johnston County Visitors Bureau (JCVB) is pleased to announce that Broadslab Distillery in Benson, NC was chosen as a participating tourism partner in this campaign.

If you've been following our Meet the Makers blog series, or you've been a fan of Johnston County for more than a few years, then you've heard us talk about Broadslab and owner Jeremy Norris. Jeremy is a Benson native that epitomizes what it means to be authentic, welcoming, and dedicated. Broadslab Distillery is a labor of love for Jeremy who runs a dirt-to-bottle operation - farming the corn, making the mash, and distilling the shine all on his farm just a few miles from Exit 79 off I-95. Jeremy is also a fifth generation moonshiner and his recipe is a result of hard work across each of those generations.

It's no wonder that Jeremy was selected this year to be featured by VisitNC in their media efforts to entice visitors to explore everything North Carolina has to offer. The "Firsts That Last" campaign is about experiencing something for the first time, one of the key reasons we all travel. In these videos including Jeremy, real visitors (not actors) Zac and Tomo from Brooklyn experience NC's Peidmont region for the first time - tasting moonshine, visiting a farm, and eating local cuisine.

Jeremy's participation in the campaign includes TV commercials, digital videos, print, trade, social media, and public relations. Jeremy recently traveled to New York City with the JCVB's Marketing and PR Manager, Ashby Brame, for a VisitNC media event. The annual event is a chance for VisitNC tourism partners to network with NYC media outlets and freelancers to discuss travel story opportunities. Jeremy was one of the guests of honor this year and we are so pleased with the reception he got.

Be sure to take a moment and watch the videos embedded above in this blog. We know they will make you want to Visit North Carolina and we hope they will also make you want to visit Johnston County and Jeremy over at Broadslab !

Ashby Brame

Ashby Brame

Ashby Brame is a Johnston County native who lived all over the state of North Carolina from mountains to coast, before settling back in JoCo. She loves sharing the ways in which this county is evolving into a fun visitor destination and an awesome place to call home. Ashby hopes her blogs about history, hospitality, delicious food, beer, and moonshine encourage people near and far to give JoCo a try.

Bernadette Peters’ Guide to Solo Adventures in Sylva and Western NC

It’s all right here in Jackson County: Post-work hikes and sunsets, mountain bike trails just minutes away, plenty of bodies of water to cool off in and a culinary scene to boot.

Bernadette Peters here! Once I discovered Western North Carolina years ago, I simply could not wait until retirement to move here – so I didn’t. In 2011, I moved to Sylva and opened City Lights Cafe downtown, and I now work as the town's Economic Development Director. Over the past 14 years, the trails, rivers, lakes, views and restaurants have become my companions if friends aren’t around or if I want a quick adventure after work. Now they can be your companions, too!

All about the outdoors

I'm never bored with all the scenic adventures in my own backyard. Just take a look:

Woman taking selfie with three friends and a dog in kayaks on mountain lake

  • Ela Lake/Reservoir near Whittier : This is perfect for a quick after-work paddle. There are no motorboats and lots of wildlife like cranes, otters and eagles.
  • Wolf Lake  near Wolf Mountain : For a long day on the water (it’s 183 acres), you’ll find me here. Taking a picnic is the best and most refreshing fun!
  • Western Carolina University trails : The seven local trails here give me a great workout after work.
  • Fire Mountain Trails : Typically a weekend stop, these 11 miles of multiuse trails are free to use, offer a variety of features and interlace through NC’s Great Smoky Mountains.
  • Tsali Recreation Area : It’s named one of the top places in the country to ride for good reason: It has 40 miles of trails over four loops, plus unreal views of Fontana Lake and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
  • Jack Rabbit : With 15 miles of trails, this place is good for both experienced riders and beginners.

Woman standing on rock smiling at camera with beautiful mountains in background

  • Waterrock Knob Trail : Someone pinch me – I still can’t believe this is one of the nearby options I get to visit on a regular basis. It’s a steep hike from the parking lot to the top of Waterrock Knob, but you’ll be rewarded with views from the highest point on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
  • Panthertown Valley : If I have the day, I sometimes like to head here for these rugged, backcountry trails.
  • Shining Rock Wilderness : A handful of peaks exceed 6,000 feet in elevation at this 18,000-acre wilderness area, and my favorite trails here are Art Loeb and Sam Knob.
  • Cullowhee Falls (aka Glenville Falls or High Falls) : It’s not easy to find but it’s a serene, 2-mile out-and-back hike along the river. About eight times a year, there is a release of the dam, resulting in the most powerful waterfall in the state – it's a sight to watch! I love swimming in the pools and deep holes to cool off, or just lying on the rocks, listening to the water.

Additional Sylva and Jackson County highlights

The small-town progressive community is what drew me to Sylva in the first place. If you’re here for the weekend, pop into a few of my favorites:

  • Friday Concerts on the Creek : Summer weekends in Sylva start here with music, great food and locally brewed craft beer.
  • Western Carolina University events : Great art displays, live music or film festivals are often on display here in the evenings.
  • Finding your outdoor needs : Everything you need for adventure can be found at Black Balsam Outdoors , Motion Makers Bicycle Shop and Tuckaseegee Fly Shop .
  • Downtown Social District : Enjoy a local craft beer or other beverage and go shopping, head up to the top of the courthouse for amazing views or hang out at the local park.
  • My go-to restaurants : You’ll often find me at Breadheads Tiki Shack , Meatballs Pizzeria or Martha’s Place in Sylva, fueling back up after my adventures.

New ad hits North Carolina Republican Mark Robinson for anti-abortion comments that women didn’t keep their ‘skirt down’

Mark Robinson speaks points while speaking

North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein, a Democrat who is running for governor against Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, plans to launch his first two television ads on Tuesday, one of which attacks his opponents’ views on abortion in the high-stakes battleground race , according to a campaign official who shared the ads exclusively with NBC News.

One 30-second ad , titled “Listen,” features Robinson, who has been an outspoken critic of abortion rights, talking on a Facebook Live stream in 2019 and railing against the procedure, the campaign official said.

“Abortion in this country is not about protecting the lives of mothers,” Robinson says in the clip used in the ad. “It is about killing the child because you weren’t responsible enough to keep your skirt down.”

The ad, which is part of a seven-figure buy by Stein’s campaign, also features Robinson appearing to say if he was governor and had a “willing” state legislature, he would sign legislation into law that bans abortion “for any reason.”

The Robinson campaign argued the ad took those comments out of context. In the  interview from 2023 featured in the ad, Robinson went on to say banning all abortions would not prevent them from happening and that he’d want to pass a “heartbeat” bill, which would ban abortions after roughly six weeks of pregnancy.

The spot also features Robinson saying: “For me there is no compromise on abortion. It makes no difference to me why or how that child ended up in that womb.”

Stein, who has been an outspoken supporter of abortion rights, has vowed to defend access to the procedure and women’s reproductive freedoms.

“This November, North Carolinians will have a stark choice between a safer, stronger North Carolina with Josh Stein or Mark Robinson’s focus on stripping women of their reproductive freedoms and a vision for division that will kill jobs,” Jeff Allen, Stein’s campaign manager, said in a statement. “Over the next five months, we are prepared to make sure every North Carolinian knows the stakes of this race — and we’re just getting started.”

When asked for comment about Stein’s attacks on Robinson’s abortion stances, Mike Lonergan, the communications director for Robinson’s campaign, said Robinson is “pro-life” because of the “painful and difficult” experience he and his wife had when they decided to get an abortion in 1989. Robinson has since said the decision to have an abortion was “wrong.”

“He’s said that as governor he would sign a heartbeat bill with exceptions for rape, incest and when the life of the mother is in danger,” Lonergan said in a statement of Robinson. “Lt. Gov. Robinson also wants to turn North Carolina into a destination state for life by doing more to support women that choose life; like improving our foster-care and adoption systems; and preserving access to IVF.”

Lonergan also attacked President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party as a whole for their stances on abortion.

“Biden, Stein and the Democrats are recycling their same old playbook they used in 2022,” Lonergan said in the statement. “It failed then and it will fail now. North Carolina voters don’t support the Biden-Stein agenda of taxpayer-funded, late-term abortion on-demand. That’s extreme and out of step with our state’s values.”

The second ad from the Stein campaign Tuesday focuses on his work on rape kit backlogs and the fentanyl crisis as North Carolina attorney general.
