As an ocean lover, the Abrolhos Islands off the coast of Western Australia are a must do for anyone visiting the Geraldton Mid West region. With a rich history and an abundance of natural beauty, the Abrolhos Islands are not well known outside this area. Consequently visiting the islands is an amazing experience that not many tourists have done. If you have heard of the Abrolhos Islands, or if you are looking for a day trip, a fishing trip or a 5 day cruise to experience some of Western Australia's incredible marine life, this is how to do it!

Why Visit The Abrolhos Islands

From the migrating humpback whales that inhabit the waters around the islands between July and October, to the vibrant coral coast, the Abrolhos Islands are slice of Australia you won't find elsewhere. While the islands are visited by eco tourists, fishermen and ocean lovers, some seasons are better than others for specific pursuits such as fishing or whale watching.

Regardless of the time you choose to visit, you'll be rewarded with stunning landscapes, unique wildlife encounters, and a range of activities to suit every adventurer. Whether you're a wildlife enthusiast, a history buff, or simply someone looking for a unique getaway, the Abrolhos Islands have something for you.

Immerse Yourself in Nature at the Abrolhos Islands

Located approximately 60km off the Geraldton coast, the 122 islands in the Abrolhos archipelago are a true nature lover's paradise. The islands are home to a diverse array of marine life, including colourful coral reefs, a variety of fish species, and an abundance of seabirds. Whether you're snorkelling in the crystal blue waters, watching the local cray fishing fleet, or simply taking a sunset stroll along the pristine beaches, you'll be constantly surrounded by the islands' natural beauty.

Explore the Marine Parks and Wildlife on Offer

The marine parks of the Abrolhos Islands offer a unique opportunity to explore some of Australia's finest marine biodiversity. With over 35 species of breeding seabirds such as noddies, shearwaters, and terns, the islands are a haven for bird watchers. The seabird breeding season is a great time to visit, with large bird colonies taking over the islands and filling the air with their melodic chatter, or noisy squawking, depending on your opinion.

The islands are also home to a variety of marine species. Whether you're snorkelling one of the reefs or casting a line to catch a baldchin groper, you'll be amazed by the diversity of the marine life in the area. The islands are also the northernmost habitats of the Australian Sea Lion, a species classified as ‘vulnerable', making it a significant site for wildlife conservation.

On land, the Abrolhos Islands are equally rich in flora and fauna. More than 140 species of native flora, including heath, dwarf shrubland, saltbush and mallee, can be found here. For the fauna, Tammar Wallabies and bush rats are among the mammals that call these islands home.

The islands' earliest European settlers left a significant imprint on the islands' maritime history, further enriching the tapestry of the islands' natural and cultural landscape. I have friends from Geraldton who come from fishing families that lived for the cray season every year on islands called “Little Rat” and “Big Rat”.

Whether you're a nature enthusiast or a casual traveller, the Abrolhos Islands offer a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a world where nature thrives. While these islands don't offer the postcard palm tree tropical terrain that you might expect, they are a very unique environment and not to be discounted. While the flora is scrubby and harsh, it is unique in itself and supports a thriving animal and bird population.

Snorkelling and Diving the Many Reefs Available

When you think of the Abrolhos Islands, one of the first things that comes to mind is the stunning coral reefs. Almost as vibrant and diverse as the Great Barrier Reef, these underwater ecosystems are teeming with life. If you head out on the fishing or tourist boat, you can have the privilege of snorkelling amongst the reefs, experiencing a world unlike any other.

Among the many marine species you may encounter, the baldchin groper stand out with its distinct blue hue. These fish are friendly and curious, often coming close to divers. Other species of reef cod can get massive in these waters and I'm not going to lie, when one wants to check you out, it can be a little intimidating.

The Australian sea lions also offered a memorable experience. These endearing creatures are known for their playful nature, often showing off their swimming skills. The sight of the endangered Australian sea lions, in particular, was a reminder of the delicate balance of nature and the importance of conservation efforts.

The Management of The Abrolhos Islands

For many years the Abrolhos was used primarily by the local cray fishing fleet. The cray season on the Abrolhos saw families descend onto the island groups of Wallabi, Easter and Pelsaert for months at a time. Schools ran on the islands and the boats who worked this area built camps that were constructed to make life easier for those captains and deckhands who worked the waters. Living on a boat is tough but when you entire family can join you for the season, life got easier and everyone got happier.

Supply boats ran regularly, delivering food and necessities and taking the cray fish back to the Geraldton co-op for processing. It was a life that many Geraldton children grew up with and our generation were the last to really experience it like that.

The natural significance of the area along with the limitation of both catch numbers and licenses resulted in the area coming under a high level of protection in the mid to late 1990s. WA Fisheries wanted to protect the cray population and started reducing pot licenses, which in turn reduced the fishing vessel numbers. While it wasn't a popular decision in the area at the time, it has resulted in this incredible slice of Western Australia being very well protected.

While fishing still exists, the number of camps and who is allowed to stay during the season is very heavily regulated now. I know local families who have had 3 or 4 generations of family spend time at the Abrolhos every year, that now are not able to bring Grandma over for easter because she isn't a necessary worker on the boat. The rules are very strict, but they have resulted in the absolute protection of this amazing archipelago.

Revealing the Rich History of Abrolhos Islands

The Houtman Abrolhos Islands has a rich history. Located about 60km off the Geraldton coast, the islands are steeped in a fascinating past that stretches back hundreds of years. The islands are made up of three major groups, namely the Wallabi, Easter and Pelsaert groups, each with its unique historical significance.

The tragic Batavia Story is perhaps the most well-known historical event associated with the islands. This tale of shipwreck, mutiny, and survival has forever marked the islands, adding an intriguing layer to their allure. Apart from this, the islands are also known for their cray fishing and pearling industries. The industries have been a significant part of the islands' history, providing livelihoods for the locals and contributing to the regions' economic growth.

The Abrolhos Islands are not only a meeting place for tropical and temperate sea life but also a convergence point of cultures and histories. The islands' marine life, which is one of the State’s unique marine areas, has played a significant role in shaping the islands' history and way of life. The islands are a dream destination for those who love diving, fishing, or snorkelling. If you're into photography, you'll have a blast capturing the stunning scenery and vibrant marine life.

As a traveller, I find it fascinating to learn about the history of the places I visit, however I'm embarrassed to say that despite living in Geraldton for a few years I didn't really know the full story of the Batavia and the story of its wreck.

The Dark History of Houtman Abrolhos Islands

The Houtman Abrolhos Islands harbour a stark and haunting past. The islands were named after their ill-fated discoverer, Frederick de Houtman, a Dutch explorer who encountered treacherous coral reefs surrounding the islands in 1619. However, the islands are more notoriously known for the tragic events that unfolded a year later with the infamous shipwreck of the Batavia.

In 1629, the Batavia, a ship from the Dutch East India Company, was wrecked on Morning Reef in the Wallabi Group of the Abrolhos Islands. The shipwreck survivors, about 300 in total, found themselves stranded on the desolate islands. What followed was a horrific tale of mutiny, murder and survival that claimed the lives of more than half of the survivors.

The ruthless leader responsible for the massacre, Jeronimus Cornelisz, was eventually brought to justice by the ship's commander, Francisco Pelsaert, whose name was given to one of the main island groups (and a popular nightclub in Geraldton for a few years in the 80's).

The eerie remnants of the Batavia shipwreck and the subsequent massacre can still be seen and felt today. When you visit the Abrolhos Islands, you can book a tour to visit the site of the Batavia shipwreck and learn more about this dark chapter of history. The islands, despite their grim past, have turned into a symbol of resilience and regrowth.

The Houtman Abrolhos Islands National Park was established in 2019, making it one of the newest national parks in Australia.

Today, the Abrolhos Islands are also known as the “Galapagos Islands of the Indian Ocean” due to their rich biodiversity.

Despite their gruesome history, the Houtman Abrolhos Islands have transformed into a beacon of hope for nature and wildlife conservation. A visit to the Abrolhos Islands will not only give you an insight into a dark past but will also showcase the remarkable resilience of nature and the importance of environmental preservation.

The Pearling Industry on the Abrolhos Islands

From afar, the Abrolhos Islands might seem like nothing more than a huddle of squat islands, but they have a rich history that's worth exploring. The islands have been a hub of pearling activities since the late 1990s.

Each year, the crystal blue waters surrounding these islands become a meeting place for tropical and temperate sea life. Among the diverse marine life, you'll find an abundance of oysters that produce some of the finest pearls in the world. These pearls have been an alternate source of income for local divers and the area is now know for its black pearls.

Pearls harvested on the Abrolhos can be purchased at local Geraldton jewellers “Latitude Jewellers” or at Chimere Pearls also located in Geraldton city centre.

Adventures and Activities on the Abrolhos Islands

Visiting the Abrolhos Islands is a dream come true for any adventure seeker. These islands offer a plethora of activities that will keep you captivated and yearning for more. Whether you are a nature enthusiast, a history buff, or a thrill-seeker, the Abrolhos Islands have something for everyone.

Take a Scenic Flight and Day Tour To The Islands

There’s no better way to appreciate the beauty of the Abrolhos Islands than from the air. Shine Aviation (Geraldton Air Charter) offer an unbeatable aerial view of the islands. Each flight takes off from Moonyoonooka Airport in Geraldton and flies over Western Australia’s famous coastline, providing stunning views of beaches, townships, bushland and cliffs before coming to the island chain.

These scenic flights offer the fastest and most efficient route to the Abrolhos Islands. Landing on East Wallaby Island, I was immediately awestruck by the otherworldly landscape that greeted us. The landing strip is red dirt and it's hard to correlate that to the amazing scenery you just viewed from the air.

The advantage of this day trip over a simple scenic flight is that you land on one of the islands and get to explore the island at your leisure, either by swimming in the crystal clear waters of Turtle Bay or taking a leisurely walk around the island. The pilot takes you on a walk around the area and offers some great info on the island, flora and fauna as well. At $440 its not cheap but it is really worth it.

Brad and I took his mum who it turned out had been involved in reporting on the impact of the small shelter that was built specifically for the day trips. It was so cool for her to see the outcome.

While the ocean is beautiful, you need to be aware that the Indian Ocean is COLD! Its not Canada cold but it is cold water so while you have time for a snorkel and it is really worth it – its not the warm water of the east coast.

If you don't have the time to do the full day tour, consider one of these options which are both scenic flights over the islands, one also taking in the pink lake at Port Gregory as well.

Pink Lake Port Gregory

Pink Lake and Abrolhos Flyover Tour

  • Reserve Now & Pay Later option
  • From $490 AUD so not cheap but it is a plane tour .
  • 2.5 Hours in duration
  • Cancellation up to 24 hours before departure.

Scenic flight over the Abrolhos Islands

Abrolhos Islands Scenic Flyover

  • From $320 AUD so a more affordable option
  • 1 Hour in duration

There are flights from Perth but they are expensive – as you would expect. Check out all the day tours that Viator has to see the Abrolhos Islands.

Fishing Tours and Trips to The Abrolhos Islands

There are a few operators that do day trips or live aboard multi day trips to the Abrolhos for fishing.

Apache Charters offer a 6 night fishing charter starting at $2250 per person + gst. They operate from the end of February to the middle of may and depart and return from Geraldton Marina.

Blue Horizon Charters offer a similar trip to the Abrolhos that can be customised for between 3 and 6 days. They cater to groups so if you have some friends who are also keen get in touch with Blue Horizon for more info.

Another local company Pelican Charters offers both fishing and diving trips on their boat the Livewire a jet boat built for the offshore oil and gas industry. A jet boat means they can get in to much shallower waters so you can have a much more comprehensive experience. Get in touch with Pelican Charters to enquire about visiting the Abrolhos with them.

Cruise the Abrolhos Islands with Eco Abrolhos

This is going to be my next Abrolhos adventure. These cruises look amazing! All their cabins are ensuited so you and your nearest and dearest have great privacy. They offer different levels of cabins and even cater to solo travellers! Cabins start at just over $3000 for their 5 day trip which operate as a fly out boat back, or vice versa. The food looks amazing as does the itinerary. Check them out and see if this is suitable for you.

Planning Your Visit to Abrolhos Islands

Planning your visit to the Abrolhos Islands is easy, considering how inviting the coast of Western Australia is all year round. However, the hottest months are between December and February, make them less favourable for those who prefer cooler weather.

On the other hand, between July and October, you have the chance to witness the majestic migrating humpback whales that inhabit the waters around the islands.

Most fishing charters have specific seasons so be sure to check with them before booking your trip.

Geraldton will be the jump off point for most of the trips to and from the Abrolhos and getting to Geraldton is easy. Its a 4 hour drive north of Perth which if you take the coastal route, means you will get to see the small towns of Lancelin, Cervantes and Jurien bay on the drive.

Accommodation In Geraldton

Geraldton has quite a few decent hotels, however I would recommend The Gerald for your stay. Its a great hotel with a good roof top bar for sunset drinks and its right in the middle of town for access to all the food and restaurants. The Ocean Centre Hotel is also in the centre of town, however it is a little tired these days. They may have had a refurbishment since I last stayed so maybe check them out as well.

Weather Conditions in Abrolhos Islands

The Abrolhos Islands experience a Mediterranean climate. This means that the sun is often shining, making the islands a great destination for most of the year. However, the seasons do bring some changes in weather and sea conditions.

During summer, the temperature ranges from 30 to 40 degrees Celsius and can peak as high as 45. While Geraldton may see these extreme conditions (usually in February) the islands are always cooler. The sea is usually calm, with the warm temperature making it the perfect time for water activities such as snorkelling and diving. This is also when the marine life is most vibrant, offering a stunning display of colours beneath the surface.

Autumn sees a slight drop in temperature, ranging from 22 to 29 degrees Celsius. The sea remains relatively calm, with the cooler water attracting a different array of marine life. This is a great time for fishing enthusiasts as many species are more active during this season.

Winter brings cooler weather, with temperatures ranging from 10 to 20 degrees Celsius. The sea can be a bit rougher during this time, but it's still a great time to visit for those interested in the rich history of the islands, or for bird watchers as many species migrate here during the winter.

Spring sees a gradual rise in temperature, ranging from 20 to 28 degrees Celsius. The sea conditions start to calm down, making it a good time for those looking to explore the underwater world.

Best Time to Visit Abrolhos Islands

The timing of your visit to the Abrolhos Islands can greatly influence your overall experience. Being a tropical paradise off the coast of Western Australia, each season offers a distinct charm. However, I've found that there are certain periods in the year that are especially spectacular.

The summer months, from December to February, are hot but this can be a great time for snorkelling, swimming, and exploring the underwater marine life.

During the autumn months from March to May, the temperatures cool down a bit, and the wildlife is usually more active during this period, making it a great time for bird-watching and wildlife photography.

Winter, from June to August, is the off-peak season, however this is when the whales migrate. From the giant Blue Whales to Humpbacks and even Whale Sharks this is the season to see them. They migrate from May to December from the colder waters of south west WA to the Kimberly in the north. This is an experience you won't want to miss. Read my story on patting a wild whale for my own incredible experience.

Wrapping up the Abrolhos Island Adventure

I couldn't believe that I had left it so long to visit the Abrolhos. I really wish I had spent some time on the islands with some of my cray fishing friends when I was young, however seeing it now it all its glory, protected for future generations is the best way to see it now.

One of the highlights of my trip was the time I spent in the water at Turtle Bay. The pristine, turquoise waters, teeming with colourful corals and diverse marine life, reinforced my love of Western Australia. It was so cool snorkelling just a few metres from the shore, and while it was DAMN cold – it wasn't horrible. The bay was also the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a picnic on the beach and some sun to warm us up again afterward..

If you are in Western Australia and you’re seeking an adventure off the beaten path, Abrolhos Islands is the place to be. Even just for the day…

Had our first booking cancelled because they decided they didn't have enough people booked (fine print said nothing about this), re organised all our accommodation and holidays and re booked. Received an email confirming the day before then when we turned up 7.30 in the morning we were told the tour was cancelled again! Extremely poor business ethics. Read more Written 19 April 2022
  • 902geoff 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointing end to a fantastic adventure. We recently stay for 3 nights on The Sea Shack at the Abrolhos islands. Staff were very welcoming and made us all feel welcome from the moment we stepped of the plane. In true Batavia coast style the wind was up but living in the area we were aware of what the conditions could be like. Even with the weather not playing nice a vast array of sightseeing, snorkeling and fishing was offered, along with fantastic food and company. We did manage to get a couple of fishing trips in and prior to leaving we were assured by email that we could keep the fish we caught. On the day we left myself and another guest were asked if we would fillet the fish and that it would be divided up amongst the guests. Well that was not the case. We ended up with two fillets of fish each and a couple of Cray tails, with the rest of the fish going into the freezer on the boat.Very disappointing after catching 10 nice fish and being asked to also rig lines and help out on the boat. I had messaged family and friends while onboard saying that they need to do this charter. Knowing that some of these people wouldn't be as polite as myself not taking home the fish they caught I have since advised against doing the trip. Read more Written 3 March 2022

Food was excellent and never ending. Being cealiac it is always a worry but Tori did an excellent job and I was completely fine. Fishing in the shallows from a tinnie when we were allowed to fish. The Tinnie had no safety equipment. What fish we did catch was used for dinner & we went home with nothing. We motored our to where the pots were, and laughed and carried on as one after another craypots were hauled aboard and divested of multiple (legal!) crays. After the see-sawing over the swell, and back at land sharing out the catch, the team at AA were very accommodating and showed us over the whale watching boat. With a coffee!! Cruise to the intriguing Houtman Abrolhos archipelago to explore far-flung fishing communities, captivating coral gardens and a very dark past.

Sixty kilometres off the edge of Western Australia , an island smaller than a footy oval is the last place you’d expect to find a thoroughly decent espresso. But at 3pm each day, Pete Scarpuzza heats up a shiny pot on the stovetop and waits for friends to come. Like clockwork, locals wander to the weathered cottage for a chinwag, exchanging smiles and stories for a fresh cup of caffeine.

Only seven people reside on Basile Island, and that’s when it’s busy. Usually, there are only three. The woolly cray fisherman and his brother Nino are carrying on a tradition set by their father, one of the first fishermen to colonise this remote archipelago of 122 islands, named the Houtman Abrolhos .

Few people even know these specks exist in the ocean, off the state’s mid-point. As rare visitors, we’re welcomed with an elbow to the ribs, and told our invitation here is one way of freshening up conversation among the island regulars.

We’re on a five-day exploratory cruise and, as espresso cups are handed around, we hear that Eco Abrolhos’ 32-person catamaran is the only tourism vessel permitted to stop at Basile. It’s partly to do with the chocolate cake our hosts bring along, but mainly it’s about the connections made over the 30 years they, too, fished these waters. “We took it for granted, and eventually we looked at it and thought, ‘It is pretty special’,” says Eco Abrolhos’ owner Jay Cox, a big bear of a man with the booming voice of a market auctioneer. Jay and his wife Sonia raised two kids on the islands; son Bronson is our skipper. “It’s just pristine. It’s the remoteness, the wildlife,” says Cox senior. “It grabs you.”

This is a special time for the islands, since 2019 marked 400 years since a Dutch merchant sailor came across the flat crusts of land en route to the Spice Islands of Indonesia. Captain Houtman spotted the archipelago 151 years before Captain James Cook arrived on the east coast of Australia.

Abrolhos is believed to be a Portuguese term meaning ‘spiked obstructions’ – a fortuitous descriptor of these harsh, coral-rimmed islands that barely peek above the waterline. Numerous ships subsequently ran aground, including the one named Batavia, whence the aftermath of treachery and murder still produces goosebumps – and skeletons. But more on that later. For now, we’re blissed out on the Swiss Family Robinson-style existence of the past eight decades.

We tramp down a raw-wood jetty and take in Basile’s row of boxy, fibro shacks decorated with shells, buoys and frayed rope. Nicknamed Little Italy, this stretch is painted at first sympathetically, in turquoise, cobalt and emerald, before things get louder with red, violet and fluorescent green. “When the wives and kids began living on the islands, the colours followed,” says Pete, who is among the last of the 150 fishermen who once called the islands home.

Until a decade ago, abodes linked by white, coral paths led to community clubs, tiny schools and over-sea drop toilets that fanned around the landforms like fingers on a hand. Twenty-two of the islands bustled with close-knit, communal life. “We had power generators in the early days, rainwater tanks, bucket showers and kerosene fridges,” recalls Jay. “You had to write letters; there was no phone or internet. When I first started going out with Sonia, I’d have to wait five days for the carrier boat to come out with the mail. You say things in letters that no one else sees.”

Back then, the islands would buzz from March to July; now, a quota-style measuring system of the cray catch means it’s not worth leaving the mainland for long spells. Instead, most keep to the mainland around Geraldton and fish to market demand.

geraldton

Crayfish fishing camps are dotted throughout WA’s Abrolhos Islands.

Jay may have farewelled his commercial fishing days, but his passion for seafood remains strong. Each morning, pots are pulled, and mealtimes are a showreel of the ocean’s bounty: decadent crayfish pizza, creamy seafood chowder, surf and turf, and even chunky crayfish dip.

When we snorkel over coral gardens in the glass-blue water and spot wafting rock-lobster feelers, it’s hard not to think of how they might be repurposed. The marooned crew of the Batavia probably had similar thoughts. By night in 1629, the pride of the Dutch fleet hit reef, stranding more than 250 survivors on the islands. With little fresh water, barely any food and no natural shelter, the ship’s commander left to seek help. While he rowed to Indonesia, a gang of mutineers slaughtered some 126 men, women and children – Australia’s first mass murder. Their aim was to keep the scarce resources, and the heavily laden ship’s loot, for themselves.

When we set foot on the Island of Angry Ghosts, its pristine inlet of white sand, crystalline water and a playful sea lion seems an incongruous match for the horrors meted out here. But as we walk along coral rubble that tinkles like glass, the sun beats down and thoughts wander to those people, stuck in a place that’s as barren and bitterly inhospitable as it is beguiling.

We pass low shrubs that claw at our legs and stop at a stone jail where the ringleader, Jeronimus Cornelisz, was held before being tortured and hung as punishment for his staggering crimes. He ordered the killing of more than a third of those shipwrecked; their skeletons continue to be unearthed, most recently by archaeologists in 2017.

batavia shipwreck

An anchor from the Batavia Shipwrekc on Abrolhos. (Image: Paul Hogger)

The Batavia shipwreck was officially discovered in 1963, but gnarly Abrolhos fishermen claim they found it earlier. The reef can’t be snorkelled during a fierce swell, but we strike a calm day and splash in. I barely notice the colourful schools of parrotfish as enormous anchors loom into view, scattered on the sea floor like pick-up sticks. I count seven, their hefty curves covered in coral. I kick my flippers towards the submerged vessel. There’s nothing left of the vessel but a scar in the ocean floor, cutting through the coral in the shape of a ship’s bow. It’s eerie the sea has never reclaimed the impact zone.

Nearby Big Pigeon Island is home to one of the last remaining community clubs, where beers start at $5 and dinner is advertised on the whiteboard: $8. There are fewer than a handful of punters inside. One of them, known simply as Spags, claims he was the first to swim over the Batavia wreck, when he was 15 years old. “I found rosary beads, a silver pot, all sorts of things. I gave most of it to the museum,” he says.

A silver coin hangs around his wrinkled neck. When I point it out, he says it’s the only piece of salvage he kept. The markings are German, with a picture of Roman King Ferdinand on it, forming evidence the Dutch ship traded with many ports on its global journey before it ended here.

As we dinghy back to our mothership, the molten copper hues of sunset reflect in the ocean, engulfing sky and sea. As darkness takes hold, we see a dozen sharks floating in the blue space at the back of the boat. Like everything in the Abrolhos, the scene is brutal and beautiful in one.

Getting there

The five-day Eco Abrolhos cruise departs from Geraldton, a 4.5-hour drive north of Perth, or an hour’s flight with Qantas. Abrolhos cruises run February to May and September to October.

The Gerald is an impressively chic boutique hotel in Geraldton’s heart. The town’s main shopping street, beach and esplanade are less than a minute’s walk away.

Eating there

The Gerald’s nautically themed rooftop bar, called The Old Man And The Sea , dishes up tasty, wallet-friendly share dishes – go for the fish tacos.

Playing there

Stop in at the free-entry Museum of Geraldton for an encompassing history of the Batavia and other shipwrecks along the coast.

I am one of 10 members of The Marmion Angling and Aquatic Club Dive section that is going to the Abrolhos islands next week on Seaestar boat charters for a week of diving, underwater photography and fishing. This is my second visit to this local gem of islands. The underwater environment is simply beautiful.

Your guide to Geraldton and the Abrolhos Islands

Travel & Touring  |  WA Things to Do

15 March, 2022  By: Julie Hosking

Often overlooked as little more than a pit stop on the way to somewhere more exotic, Geraldton is an attraction in its own right and a gateway to the amazing Abrolhos Islands.

Not all roads lead to Geraldton but there is more than one way to drive to the regional city from Perth, each with its own appeal.

Only have a few days up your sleeve? Hit the Brand Highway and you’ll cover the 420km in about four hours. It’s not the most scenic of routes but it is the quickest.

For a prettier and more leisurely road trip, take Indian Ocean Drive. As the name suggests, it hugs the coast so there is plenty of opportunity to get out, stretch the legs, have a dip at one of the pristine beaches or explore one of the attractions along the way. This route will add about half an hour to your journey, more if you head off the main drag to take in sights such as the spectacular Pinnacles, but it’s worth doing in one direction.

Lighthouse near the sea

If you’re heading to Gero (as the locals call it) in late winter or early spring, consider taking an inland route. This is the time to stop and smell the wildflowers that transform the Mid West into a sea of brilliantly coloured carpets. The more eastern Wildflower Way takes you north from Perth, through Dalwallinu, Perenjori and Mullewa before looping around to Geraldton; while the newer Midlands Route weaves through Coorow, Three Springs and Mingenew.

In and around Geraldton

No matter how you choose to get there, Geraldton  is worth the fuel. Its Mediterranean climate means the sun is shining more often than not, though the winters are cooler and the wind that whips in off the sea can take you by surprise – it’s a favourite with wind and kite surfers for good reason.

Often used as a base to explore the stunning Coral Coast, or as a pit stop heading north, Geraldton has much to offer those who linger. With a laidback country meets cosmopolitan vibe, you get all the charm of somewhere regional with the benefit of a vibrant nightlife, dining, shopping and arts scene.

Person walking on boardwalk

Accommodation is as varied as your budget. For those who prefer a little luxe, the Gerald Apartment Hotel is a well-appointed four-star hotel that’s just a few steps from shops, restaurants and Geraldton’s fabulous foreshore. Or just enjoy a couple of drinks in the hotel’s rooftop bar overlooking the foreshore, before retiring to one of the more wallet-friendly holiday parks.

Wherever you choose to stay, swing by the visitor centre, in the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery (GRAG), to get tips on where to go and what to do.

There are bushwalking and biking trails to explore year-round, while in the summer, water sports are the go. Thrillseekers can jump on a jetski or jetfoil, kayak or standup paddleboard, while wind and kite surfers head to Point Moore or Separation Point, which is also a popular spot for surfing. Or you can simply relax in the shade by the foreshore, while the kids lap up the impressive water play zone.

There’s also plenty to do indoors. Aside from GRAG, where you can wander around an ever-changing array of exhibitions and pick up some local art, don’t leave town without visiting the Yamaji Art Centre. Named for the local Aboriginal people, it’s also 100 per cent Aboriginal owned and operated, providing support for artists in a range of mediums, including painting, textiles and weaving. The talent on display is breathtaking.

As the day ends, head up the hill to Mount Scott to pay your respects at the HMAS Sydney II Memorial. This stunning tribute to the 645 sailors who lost their lives off the WA coast in World War II - its domed Sanctuary sculpted with 645 seagulls - is a poignant place to watch the sun set, grateful for their sacrifice.

Memorial sculpture at night

If you want to know more about the ill-fated voyage, visit the impressive Shipwrecks Gallery at the Museum of Geraldton. This treasure trove of history also gives insights into the region’s most infamous shipwreck, on the Houtman Abrolhos Islands.

The 'Galapagos' of the Indian Ocean

Ever heard of Frederick de Houtman? The Dutch navigator first laid eyes on the islands that bear his name more than 400 years ago, but you could be forgiven for not making the connection given almost everyone simply calls them ‘the Abrolhos’.

What is widely recognised is the importance of the 122 islands about 60km off the Geraldton coast. Such is the biodiversity of the Abrolhos, which stretch some 100km, they have been described as ‘the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean’.

RELATED: 10 island adventures in WA »

The State Government declared the pristine environment a marine national park in 2019, with funding devoted to managing sustainable tourism to the Abrolhos.

Houtman marked them as ‘Abrolhos’ on his charts, in what is believed to be a contraction of the Portuguese ‘abre os olhos’ or ‘open your eyes’, after almost colliding with the archipelago. Something the crew of the Batavia should have heeded a decade later, when the Dutch ship ran aground in June 1629 carrying 322 people and untold riches.

The story of the shipwreck and its bloody aftermath has been retold many times since, but it is by no means the only vessel to run afoul of the islands. More than 60 have officially met their end in the archipelago, including the Zeewijk almost 100 years after the Batavia.

Today, it’s one of the many reasons to visit the Abrolhos. Experienced divers can explore the Batavia shipwreck site, depending on the weather (the islands are replete with glorious diving and snorkelling spots) while history buffs can visit Wiebbe Hayes Stone Fort, Australia’s oldest surviving European building, and learn more about the brutal mutiny that claimed the lives of more than 100 men, women and children.

It is hard to believe something so heinous could happen somewhere so beautiful.

Diver exploring a wreck

Getting out to the Abrolhos

Divided into three main clusters, the Wallabi, the Southern or Pelsaert (after the Batavia’s captain) and Easter, the Abrolhos is best visited when the wind drops in autumn or during the milder spring, though all tours are weather dependent.

There are air and sea charter tours from Geraldton to the islands, though much of the land is off limits to protect its biodiversity. If you need some guidance, check in at the Geraldton Visitors Centre and book ahead to ensure a berth.

Aerial view of islands

As there is no accommodation on the Abrolhos, the best way to get the most out of this magnificent corner of Western Australia is to book a cabin on a boat and hang around for a few days with someone else doing the navigating.

Eco Abrolhos offers a five-day tour aboard a luxurious 32-passenger catamaran (each cabin has its own suite), where you’ll be spoilt onboard while exploring the islands. Run by Jay and Sonia Cox, former crayfish operators who lived on the Abrolhos for decades, they know the marine wonderland inside out and will take you to fish, walk, swim, snorkel and explore shipwrecks. Starting from $2700pp twin share, this books up quickly for private charters, too.

Abrolhos Adventures’ more rustic Sea Shack charter boat, which sleeps 10, offers a four-day tour for about $3000. You can sightsee on one of the tenders, take off on a jetski or standup paddleboard, fish and pull up cray pots, as well as explore the beauty of the islands.

Jetty with boats

If you don’t have the time – or the sea legs – for a boat, take to the skies. Geraldton Air Charter offers a full or half day ‘Shipwreck Special’ that takes you out over the islands for a bird’s eye view before landing near Turtle Bay to enjoy snorkelling or a guided walk.

Shine Aviation also runs a similar tour, for about $420 per adult, that provides stunning aerial views as well as time in Turtle Bay. Or pay a bit extra to fly over the famous Pink Lake, north of Geraldton, before heading out to the Abrolhos.

For about $300, you can enjoy a 90-minute scenic trip, enough time to snap hundreds of impressive shots of the watery wonders below.

Back on the mainland, if you want something a little more tangible to remember your island adventure, treat yourself to an Abrolhos pearl. While pearling is a relative newcomer to the Abrolhos, the rich corals and pristine waters work their magic on the black lip oysters, creating gems with a natural lustre in a stunning array of colours. Not unlike the islands themselves.

Eco Abrolhos

Eco Abrolhos

Operated by: Eco Abrolhos Cruises

At 35 metres in length, the Eco Abrolhos can accommodate just 32 passengers in twin share cabins on Western Australia's Kimberley Coast. She is a multi-hull vessel supporting four levels of operating decks. This expedition ship is an ideal size with her 17 en suited cabins, all of which are air-conditioned.

Eco Abrolhos offer comprehensive 13 night expedition cruises through the Kimberley, of which there are just eight for the season – four from Broome to Darwin (or vice versa) and four from Wyndham to Broome (and vice versa). The experienced Australian crew pride themselves on showing each and every guest a complete cross-section of all that the magnificent Kimberley has to offer. The cruises start and finish on the spring tide (new and full moon) to provide guests the maximum “WOW” factor at critical tidal areas like Montgomery Reef, The Horizontal Falls and the King George and Berkeley rivers – all of which are at the start or end of the expedition. The neap tides in the centre of the trip allow for better fishing and longer stops at the tide-dependent swimming holes and shore-based hikes. The Kimberley's 11-metre tides mean that this forward planning is a very important aspect of the Eco Abrolhos itinerary.

Eco Abrolhos cruises with four custom-built, high-powered tenders, each seating eight guests in comfort. The folding front stairs make boarding easy for any age. Fishing is also available throughout the expedition and there are options for both trolling and bottom fishing for quality table fish, which will be expertly prepared by the ship's professional chef. With guided Indigenous rock art tours, scenic gorge and waterfall experiences, bird watching, treks, freshwater swimming holes, incredible sunrises and sunsets, two optional helicopter flights and a complimentary fast boat ride through The Horizontal Falls, The Eco Abrolhos’s 13 night cruise certainly covers the very best that the Kimberley has to offer.
