A travel & lifestyle blog, a complete guide to ahmedabad, gujarat.

My recent visit to Ahmedabad changed my perception of the city. Ahmedabad was never on my priority list. I would have loved to visit here during the Navratri festival to feast on the delicacies and enjoy the festivities. But that would have been it! After experiencing this vibrant city, I recommend everyone to visit this beautiful city. Here is a complete guide to Ahmedabad to help you plan your visit.

Heritage walk , Ahmedabad

Three reasons to visit Ahmedabad!

Ahmedabad is a paradise for architecture and history lovers, art enthusiasts, and foodies!

India is a diverse country with a plethora of impressive destinations to explore. Ahmedabad is neither a hill station nor a beach, then why should you visit this city? Well, here are the three reasons why I loved Ahmedabad or Amdavad, as Guajarati’s love to call it.

•  In 2017, The historic walled city of Ahmedabad is listed as India’s first UNESCO World Heritage City.

•  Blessed by the tranquility of the Sabarmati River, Ahmedabad is the hub of not only the Architectural wonders but many modern-day marvels.

•  Apart from that, Ahmedabad, the former capital of Gujarat, is also known for its finger-licking cuisines.

History of Ahmedabad

Now that we have good reason to visit the city, let us start with the heritage and history of the city. The history of Ahmedabad dates to the 11th century when it was known as Ashaval. After a successful war against Ashaval king, Karna, the Chaulukya ruler, established the city of Karnavati on the banks of the Sabarmati River.

After changing hands from Chaulukya to the Vaghela dynasty, Delhi Sultanate, and Muzaffarid dynasty, subsequently, Sultan Ahmed Shah gained control of the area. He then laid the foundation of a walled city near Karnavati and named it Ahmedabad.

How to reach Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is the largest city in Gujarat!

Being an important economic and industrial hub, Ahmedabad is

well-connected to the rest of the country by various means of transport. Depending on the distance and time, you can opt for the one that suits you.

By Air:

The closest airport to the city of Ahmedabad is Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. From the airport, you can easily get a prepaid taxi to visit anywhere in the city.

  By Rail:

Kalupur railway station is the best option to reach Ahmedabad via rail. Railways connect all the major cities of India with Ahmedabad. From here you can easily take public transport or a taxi to reach any part of the city.

The best accessibility to Ahmedabad via road is through NH 8. From Mumbai, it is just a 9 to 10 hours’ drive which approximately comes to 530 kilometers.

How many days are enough to visit Ahmedabad?

Three to four days are sufficient to explore the beautiful city of Ahmedabad. Given the fact that Ahmedabad has historical as well as urban wonders, the city has thousands of things to do. There is a good chance that one could get lost for more than three days there.

Best time to visit Ahmedabad

Like most of the parts of India, November to February is the best time to visit Ahmedabad as the weather is pleasant during these months. if you are planning to visit Gujarat during this season, Do check out my complete guide to Rann Utsav . Rann of Kutch have to be a part of your Gujarat itenerary.

Best places to explore in Ahmedabad/ Things to do in Ahmedabad

When it comes to the places you can visit in Ahmedabad or things you can do in the city, the list is never-ending. So here I am taking the liberty to filter the best of the places as per my experience. This will save you the overwhelming feeling of where to visit and what to skip.

So let’s hop on!

1. Heritage Walk, Ahmedabad – “Mandir to Masjid”

The best way to feel and experience the historical richness of any place is to walk through its heritage. Given the diverse history of Ahmedabad, the Heritage walk is one of the highly recommended activities. Heritage walk is one of my personal favorites too. Walking past the narrow lanes with the old rustic building teleports you back in time. The colorful houses, temples, and mosques along with the narrow lanes of the marketplace were an unmatched experience.

The Heritage walk is also known as “Mandir to Masjid” is organized by Ahmedabad municipal corporation, it starts from 19th Century Swaminarayan Temple (which is a glorious sight). Takes you to narrow lanes lined by rustic Pols, Kala Ramji Temple, and ends at the famous 15th century Jama Masjid.

There are 3 different walks that you can enjoy depending on the time available and your interest:

Morning Heritage walk – It takes 2 hours and covers 20-22 points

Night Heritage walk – It takes 2.30 hours and covers 16 points

J ain Amdavad Heritage Walk – It takes 2.30 hours and covers 10 points

The Ashram has two parts, the section where Gandhiji lived with his wife Kasturba Gandhi and other followers. The modern section was conceived by architect Charles Correa. Rivers are a lifeline of any city, so is the Sabarmati River for Ahmedabad. The Riverfront project on the banks of Sabarmati River was initiated by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation in 1997. The idea was to preserve the natural ecology amidst the chaotic urban city. This project has ensured the urban forestry and the green cover in the city.

Today Riverfront is the sprawling hub connecting people with nature through multiple activities. The riverfront hosts River promenade streets, parks, general facility hubs, and biodiversity parks. So, if you are looking for some peaceful time, take a walk/cycle along the 11.5 km of Promenade by the riverbank or visit one of the many public parks or visit the biodiversity park with Children. Some points to Keep in Mind

There are a few points that you should keep in mind while visiting Ahmedabad.

1.  While visiting religious places, do dress modestly. Avoid wearing a short dress, shorts, spaghetti tops, etc. Do carry a stole with you.

2. Ahmedabad is a paradise for vegetarians, so don’t forget to try a variety of snacks and Gujarati cuisine. We visited “Gordhan thal’ for lunch, food was mouthwatering and at approx. 350 for an unlimited thali, it was economical too.

3.  Ahmedabad is a dry state. Restaurants or cafes do not serve alcohol. In Gujarat, you need a permit, to buy or consume alcohol (including beer and breezers) in Gujarat. Do check out the process and apply for the necessary permits in advance.

I visited Ahmedabad many years ago but I need to go back again to visit all the interesting places you’ve listed here!

This looks like such an interesting place! The architecture is so beautiful and intricate, and there are so many historical sites!

Yes you are right .it’s so amazing 😊

The heritage walk sounds really cool. And the Akshardham Temple is so pretty!

Heritage walk was my favourite experience

I would love to visit Manek Chowk and be in the hustle & bustle of a true market!!!

Yeah it’s full of colours and rustic vibes..you will love it

The temples look so beautiful, so intricately carved and unique. In fact many of the buildings here are fantastic. The river walk like really nice too

Thanks yes they have a lot to see n explore

Oh my goodness, the whole area looks stunning, but the Akshardham temple really stands out for me – it’s gorgeous! Great post 🙂

Thanks a lot..yes it’s a treasure waiting to be explored 😊

OK, this post bumped Gujarat up on my India list considerably. The combination of history and futurist is exactly right for me, but you rarely get this in a destination, and even if you do, most travel writers (being naturally arts-oriented) don’t notice it or don’t even realise that there are people in the world who are deeply into both. Thank you.

Yeah actually both the aspects of this city attracted me equally 😊 i am sure you will love it too

Sounds like a lovely city to visit! I’m a walker and I love the idea of a heritage walk around the city. Hutheesing Jain Temple and Akshardham Temple look incredible too.

Yes i love walking around the city too 😊

Gujarati Cuisine refers to the culinary preparations of the native people from the state of Gujarat in the western region of India. The Gujarati cuisine is primarily vegetarian, due to the influence of Hinduism and Jainism. The archetypal ‘Gujarati Thali’ is made up of Roti, Daal or Kadhi, Rice, and Sabzi or Shaak, which is a dish made up of different combinations of vegetables and spices, which may be a fried or sauted, and it could be spicy or sweet flavoured. https://www.indianetzone.com/38/gujarati_cuisine.htm

Ahmedabad Travel Guide: Popular Tourist Attractions & Places to See

Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, the commercial hub of Gujarat, is the seventh largest city in India. This business centre of India has attracted many trendsetters and tycoons from the highly competitive field, which makes the city highly evolving, innovative and investing. Beyond the Ahmedabad's commercial persona, the city also boasts a vibrant cultural scene featuring the eclectic influences of its Mughal roots, colonial connections and a pool of Gujarati people. Also, Ahmedabad has many tourism places to visit like Kankaria Lake, Sabarmati Ashram, Calico Museum of Textiles, Hathee Singh Temple, Sarkhej Roza, etc.

Legends say that the city owes its foundation to Sultan Ahmed Shah. While hunting Sultan Ahmed Shah encountered a warren of rabbits on the bank of the Sabarmati river. Astonishingly, the rabbits turned fiercely on his hounds and defended their territory. Considering this as an auspicious sign, Sultan Ahmed Shah built this area as his new capital and named it after himself- Ahmedabad. Till now, Ahmedabad has witnessed the rule of many rulers, starting from Sultanate rulers in 1487, Mughal rulers in 1573, Maratha rulers in 1753 and later was taken over by the East India Company in the year 1818. Until 1960, Gandhinagar was the capital of Gujarat.

A heady combination of combination of Western and Indian influence, Ahmedabad is a cultural melting point. There is a fascinating mixture of places when one goes on a holiday to Ahmedabad. Sabarmati River divides Ahmedabad into two parts - the old city and the new Ahmedabad.

Old City lies on the west side of the river and is surrounded by a 10 km long wall. Maze of crowded bazaars, exquisitely carved temples, gigantic monuments, magnificent gates and sub terrain stepwell, all these things together makes the old city. Bhadra Fort, Jama Masjid, Ahmed Shah's Mosque, Siddi Saiyad's Mosque and Tomb of Ahmed Shah are amongst the highlighted attractions of the Old Ahmedabad. All the monuments, forts, temples, pols and havelis in the western part of Ahmedabad are the testimony to the aesthetic appeal that is inherent in Gujarat.

The colonial period saw the expansion of the city to the west side of Sabarmati, facilitated by the construction of Ellis Bridge in 1875 and later the relatively modern Nehru Bridge. Towards the west side of the magnificent Sabarmati River is the New Ahmedabad featuring some finest examples of the contemporary design architecture of Le Corbusier and the American architect, Louis Kahn. The new city on the west side is nearly all built in the last 50 years. This particular section of Ahmedabad features malls, wide roads, and several major universities.

Ahmedabad is majorly an important educational tourism destination of India. With educational centres like National Institute of Design and Indian Institute of Management, the colleges of the city nurture the best talent in business and art. A lot of industries are also investing in Ahmedabad. The city is the largest business hub in Gujarat and s favourite amongst the famous business giants of India. Owing to its numerous textile mills, Ahmedabad is known to the world as the "Manchester of the East."

People say that Gujarat is the land of legends and Ahmedabad is no exception to this. Sabarmati Ashram, a peaceful ground located on the Sabarmati River's west bank, was the second home to the legendary leader Mahatma Gandhi. His personal articles like spinning wheel, spectacles amongst others are well preserved in Ashram. Sabarmati ashram was the nerve center of India's freedom movement as this was the place where Mahatma Gandhi planned many famous national movements like non-violent, civil disobedience and Swadeshi, which rocked the foundation of British Raj. Mahatma Gandhi's cottage, Hriday Kunj, has been maintained much as he left it and exhibits some of his personal belongings.

Both art collection and medieval castles, Ahmedabad has a sheer wealth of treasures. Museums like Kite Museum, Calico Museum of Textiles, Auto World Vintage Car Museum, Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Museum and Vechaar Utensils Museum can surprise anyone with its beauty and historical significance. People who want to know more about the unique and vibrant culture of the city, a tour to Ahmedabad museums can be a help. Ranging from textile museums to cars exhibitions to utensils display, here one can find many museums.

Kankaria is one of the biggest lakes of Gujarat and stands out as a major tourist attraction of Ahmedabad. Plush multiplexes and malls of Ahmedabad are worth visiting. Cities of Gujarat come to live even at night. The law garden night market is a treat for all the people who want to show some unique traditional clothes. The entire architecture is an excellent illustration of the intelligence of the engineers and architects India had even at that time. Walk in, and you will witness a sudden yet soothing drop in temperature. Breathe in the tranquillity, absorb the beauty of the intricate carvings, make a silent wish and rest for a while before you proceed with your plan for the day.

A tangled mass of factories, mosques, temples and skyscrapers, Gujarat’s commercial hub, Ahmedabad (pronounced “Amdavad”), sprawls along the banks of the River Sabarmati, about 90km from its mouth in the Bay of Cambay. With an extended population of more than 7.2 million, it is the state’s largest city (and was the capital until it was moved to Gandhinagar in 1970) and India’s sixth largest – and a metropolis of appalling pollution, dreadful congestion and outbreaks of communal violence.

Ahmedabad old city

Around ahmedabad.

However, its mix of medieval and modern makes Ahmedabad a compelling place to explore – a wander through the bazaars of the old city is particularly rewarding. The city is packed with diverse architectural styles throughout, with more than fifty mosques and tombs, plus Hindu and Jain temples and grand step-wells ( vavs ). The Calico Museum of Textiles is one of the world’s finest, while Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram is a must-see for anyone with an interest in the Mahatma.

In 2002, a controversial canal project diverted water from the River Narmada into the Sabarmati, which previously had virtually dried up outside the monsoon. This has given the city a cooler feel, but Ahmedabad, which has been plagued by high carbon monoxide levels in the past, has a long way to go before it can breathe easily.

The historic heart of Ahmedabad is the old city, an area of about three square kilometres on the east bank of the river, dissected by the main thoroughfares of Relief Road and Mahatma Gandhi (MG) Road, and reaching its northern limits at Delhi Gate. It’s best to start exploring in the Lal Darwaja area, taking in the squat buildings of the original citadel, Bhadra, the mosques and tombs of Ahmedabad’s Muslim rulers, as well as vibrant bazars and pols – labyrinths of high wooden havelis and narrow cul-de-sacs.

Bhadra Fort and around

The solid fortified citadel, Bhadra Fort, built of deep red stone in 1411 as Ahmedabad’s first Muslim structure, is relatively plain in comparison to the city’s later mosques. The palace is now occupied by offices and most of it is off-limits (some of it, at the time of writing, due to renovation work), but you can climb to the roof via a winding staircase just inside the main gateway. Across from the fort to the east is Alif Shah’s Mosque, gaily painted in green and white. Further on, beyond the odoriferous meat market in Khas Bazaar, is Teen Darwaja, a triple gateway built during Ahmed Shah’s reign that once led to the outer court of the royal citadel. A trio of pointed arches engraved with Islamic inscriptions and detailed carving spans the busy road below.

Sidi Saiyad’s Mosque

Famed for the ten magnificent jali (lattice-work) screens lining its upper walls, Sidi Saiyad’s Mosque sits in the centre of a busy roundabout. Built in 1573, the two semicircular screens on the western wall are its most spectacular, with floral designs exquisitely carved out of the yellow stone. The stonework within depicts heroes and animals from popular Hindu myths – one example of Hindu and Jain craftsmanship influencing an Islamic tradition that rarely allowed the depiction of living beings in its mosques. Women cannot enter this mosque, but the gardens around it afford good views of the screens.

Ahmed Shah’s Mosque

Small but artfully simple, Ahmed Shah’s Mosque was the private place of worship for the royal household. Sections of an old Hindu temple, perhaps dating back to 1250 AD, were used in its construction – hence the incongruous Sanskrit inscriptions on some of the pillars in the sanctuary. The zenana (women’s chamber) is hidden behind pierced stone screens above the sanctuary in the northeast corner.

Jama Masjid

The spectacular Jama Masjid, completed in 1424, stands today in its entirety except for two minarets destroyed by an earthquake in 1957. Always bustling, the mosque is busiest on Fridays (“Jama Masjid” literally translates as “Friday Mosque”), when thousands converge to worship. The 260 elegant pillars supporting the roof of the domed prayer hall ( qibla ) are covered with unmistakeably Hindu carvings, while close to the sanctuary’s principal arch a large black slab is said to be the base of a Jain idol inverted and buried as a sign of Muslim supremacy.

Immediately outside the east entrance of the mosque, the square Tomb of Ahmed Shah I, who died in 1442, stands surrounded by pillared verandas. Women are not permitted to enter the central chamber, the site of his grave, or those of his son and grandson.

Manek Chowk

The jewellery and textile market of Manek Chowk is filled with craftsmen working in narrow alleys amid newly dyed and tailored cloth. Further into the market, to the east, and surrounded by the dyers’ colourful stalls, is the mausoleum of Ahmed Shah’s queen, Rani-ka-Hazira. Its plan is identical to Shah’s own tomb, with pillared verandas clearly inspired by Hindu architectural tastes.

Mosque of Rani Sipri

The small, elegant mosque of Rani Sipri was commissioned in 1514 at the queen’s orders, when her husband ordered the execution of their son for reasons not fully understood. Her grave now also lies in front, sheltered by a pillared mausoleum. The stylish mosque, also known as Masjid-e-Nagira (“Jewel of a Mosque”) shows more Hindu influence than any other in Ahmedabad: its pillared sanctuary has an open facade to the east and fine tracery work on the west wall.

Shaking minarets

The minarets are all that remain of the Sidi Bashir mosque, built in 1452, which was named after one of Ahmed Shah’s favourite slaves. More than 21m high, these are the best existing example of “shaking minarets” – built on a foundation of flexible sandstone, probably to protect them from earthquake damage – once a common sight on Ahmedabad’s skyline, and now useful protection against the vibration of nearby trains.

Hathi Singh Temple

The Jain Hathi Singh Temple is easily distinguished by its finely carved columns. Built entirely of white marble embossed with smooth carvings of dancers, musicians, animals and flowers, this serene temple is dedicated to Dharamnath, the fifteenth tirthankara, or “ford-maker”, one of 24 great teachers sanctified by the Jains.

Calico Museum of Textiles

The Calico Museum of Textiles displays India’s finest collection of textiles, clothes, furniture and crafts. Highlights of the morning tour include exquisite pieces made for the British and Portuguese, an embroidered tent and Shah Jahan’s robes from India’s royal households. There are patola saris from Patan and extravagant zari work that gilds saris in heavy gold stitching, bringing their weight to nearly nine kilos. Other galleries are dedicated to embroideries, bandhani tie-and-dye, textiles made for overseas trade and woollen shawls from Kashmir and Chamba. The afternoon tour includes the galleries of pichwais and other temple paintings and decorations, including Jain statues housed in a replica haveli temple and centuries-old manuscripts and mandalas painted on palm leaves.

Dada Hari-ni Vav

Northern Gujarat abounds with remarkable step-wells – deep, with elaborately carved walls and broad flights of covered steps leading to a shaft – but Dada Hari-ni Vav, just outside the city’s old northeast boundaries, is among the finest. While it’s a Muslim construction, built in 1500, the craftsmen were Hindu, and their influence is clear in the lavish and sensuous carvings on the walls and pillars. Visit around 11am when the sculpted floral patterns and shapely figurines inside are bathed in sunlight. Bai Harir’s lofty mosque and lattice-walled tomb stand just west of the well, while a couple of hundred metres north of the complex is the neglected Mata Bhava-ni Vav, probably constructed in the eleventh century, before Ahmedabad was founded. It’s profoundly Hindu in character, and dedicated to Bhava-ni, an aspect of Shiva’s consort Parvati.

Sanskar Kendra Museum

The Sanskar Kendra Museum is worth a visit, covering subjects such as the history of the city, urban growth, sociological development and the activities of Gandhi and the freedom movement. The Patang Kite Museum in the basement showcases the city’s Kite Festival – the world’s largest.

Sabarmati (Gandhi) Ashram

The Sabarmati Ashram is where the Mahatma lived from 1917 until 1930, holding meetings with weavers and Harijans as he helped them find security and re-establish the manual textile industry in Ahmedabad. In keeping with the man’s uncluttered lifestyle, the collection of his personal property is modest but poignant – wooden shoes, white seamless clothes and a pair of round spectacles. The ashram itself is no longer operating, but many people come here simply to sit and meditate.

The most obvious day-trips from Ahmedabad are north to Adalaj, with its impressive step-well, and beyond to Gandhinagar, with its extraordinary Swaminarayan religious complex. South of town, the lake, pavilions and mausoleums of Sarkhej make a pleasant break from the crowded city, while further south is the ancient Harappan site at Lothal.

Near the mouth of the River Sabarmati, by the Gulf of Cambay, is Lothal, one of the largest excavated Harappan (or Indus Valley) sites. Foundations, platforms, crumbling walls and paved floors are all that remain of the prosperous sea-trading community that dwelled here between 2400 and 1900 BC, when a flood all but destroyed the settlement. A walk around the central mound reveals the old roads that ran past ministers’ houses and through the acropolis. The lower town comprised a bazaar, workshops and residential quarters. Evidence has been found here of an even older culture, perhaps dating from the fourth millennium BC, known as the Red Ware Culture. You can see remains from this period and from the Indus Valley Civilization in the illuminating museum adjacent to the site.

The Indus Valley Civilization

Before the Mauryans took over in the fourth century BC, India’s greatest empire was the Indus Valley Civilization. Sophisticated settlements dating back to 2500 BC were first discovered in 1924 on the banks of the Indus in present-day Sindh (Pakistan), at Mohenjo Daro. Further excavations in 1946 in Punjab revealed the city of Harappa, from the same era. In its prime, this great society spread from the present-day borders of Iran and Afghanistan to Kashmir , Delhi and southern Gujarat . It lasted until 1900 BC, when it was destroyed by heavy floods.

A prosperous and literate society, importing raw materials from regions as far west as Egypt and trading ornaments, jewellery and cotton, it also had a remarkable, centrally controlled political system. Each town was almost identical, with complex drainage systems. Lothal, close to the Gulf of Cambay in southern Gujarat, was a major port. Although much about this complex society remains unknown, similarities exist between the Indus Valley Civilization and present-day India. For example, like Hindus, the Indus Valley people had a strong custom of worshipping a mother goddess, and there is evidence of phallic worship, still popular among Shaivites.

Godhra and Gujarat’s communal violence

The BJP’s landslide victory in the 2002 election was seen by many as a shock, but the events of that year made it much less surprising. After the brutal attack on Hindu pilgrims at Godhra on February 27, 2002, when 58 were killed, riots rampaged across Gujarat. The death count reached almost one thousand, earning Gujarat’s BJP chief minister Narendra Modi the moniker “Muslim killer” for standing by as the violence continued. There were even allegations that the officials “were directly involved” and helped to cover up the state’s involvement. PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee later apologized and announced a US$31 million rehabilitation package, but a political campaign pledging to prevent another Godhra saw Modi go on to a landslide win.

In 2004, however, following protests against biased state authorities, the Supreme Court ordered further investigation into the riots, calling for a reopening of more than two thousand dismissed cases. In 2007, Tehelka magazine published secretly filmed footage of senior Gujarati Hindu politicians, mainly from the BJP, describing their involvement in fanning the riots. The report alleged that Modi ordered the police to side with Hindu rioters and sheltered the perpetrators from justice. Still, he was resoundingly re-elected and his ascension has continued unhindered; on May 26, 2014, he became prime minster, gaining a majority in the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the Indian parliament) – for the first time, for any party, since 1984.

Modi may appear untouchable for now, but others involved in these events have not been as lucky. In 2011, dozens of those guilty of the Godhra fire were convicted and sentenced, and a year later hundreds more of the rioters were convicted, including a former state minister, the first political figure to be officially implicated in the events.

Almost ninety percent of women who work in India are self-employed. Outside the protection of labour laws and the minimum wage, they are subject to exploitation, often by unscrupulous banks and lenders. Ahmedabad, however, has maintained a tradition of self-help since the days of Gandhi, achieving global recognition as the base of the ground-breaking Self-Employed Women’s Association , SEWA. Founded in the early 1970s, SEWA provides legal advice, training, support and childcare, and runs its own cooperative bank.

Following a major slump in the textile industry in 1984, SEWA set up training centres in weaving, sewing, dyeing and printing, providing efficient machinery. This helped to re-establish many women in the textile labour force, providing an outlet for their products. In 1987, a SEWA protest against sati (widow burning) and a campaign to have verbal divorce and polygamy banned in Gujarat resulted in a change in the law. SEWA also strongly opposes female foeticide, which is particularly widespread in Gujarat. With more than a million members nationwide, more than 600,000 of which are in Gujarat, the organization now tackles projects throughout India and overseas.

Ahmedabad India – Your Quick Travel Guide

In a nutshell.

Ahmedabad sits on the eastern bank of the Sabarmati river and is the former capital of the state of Gujarat. Today, Ahmedabad is the commercial centre of the state, and the first city in India to have been granted the UNESCO World Heritage title for its rich architectural history.

Why go to Ahmedabad

Although Ahmedabad is not known for being one of the top tourist destinations in India, the city is a bustling metropolis steeped in rich history and beguiling architectural monuments dating back to the Shah I sultanate period.

Most travellers bypass the state while scurrying from Mumbai to the destinations in Rajasthan , but the homeland of Mahatma Gandhi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi offers something altogether different from the rest of India.

Ahmedabad is renowned for its Bhadra citadel , its imposing Fort and the numerous mosques, tombs, temples and luscious gardens home to unique wildlife. As well as being a city of great historical import, Ahmedabad is famous for its cultural celebrations and observances, which are honoured with profligate festivities and festivals .

Gujarat's tourism industry is largely non-existent, but the state is one of intoxicating beauty which is evident even in the urban city of Ahmedabad, which sits on a relatively flat terrain dotted with ancient ruins and temple-topped hills. The Gujaratis are renowned for their entrepreneurial knack, but with tourism trade being so sparse they’re more keen to showcase their hospitality than sell you something.

It is worth noting, however, that if you’re after some authentic artisan handcrafts, embroidered and woven textiles and artworks Ahmedabad is a place where you will certainly find something to your liking.

When to go to Ahmedabad

The best time to visit Ahmedabad is during the winter season, between November and February, when temperatures range from 15°C to 30°C. The relatively cool climate is perfect for exploring the city, sight-seeing and various outdoor activities. While days are relatively hot, the temperature tends to drop at night providing some much-needed rest from the heat.

Where to stay in Ahmedabad

A vast majority of budget hotels and accommodation options in Ahmedabad are located in the busy, and bustling Lal Darwaja area, nearby the old city.

Most of the budged hotels around the area offer both AC as well as non-AC rooms, 24-hour checkout, some will even provide room service and free Wi-fi. But for a double room with all the aforementioned creature comforts prices average at around INR1000 per night. You will also find cheaper rooms locally, with equally cordial and friendly staff but much less comfortable facilities. Additionally, if you’re planning to stay for more than a night be mindful of the street noise, the lumpy mattresses and squat-toilet bathrooms that may prove to be a great nuisance. A basic room like that will set you back about INR200 to INR350 per night.

Most mid-range and luxury hotels are to be found on Khanpur Road, opposite the east or the west bank of the Sabarmati river, which offers much more salubrious surroundings but is farther away from all the sight-seeing hot-spots. Most of the hotels around the area offer, spacious and airy rooms, with round the clock front desk, excellent continental as well as local breakfast, free Wi-fi; and some also include free airport transfers, laundry services, spa facilities and other amenities upon request. A room at a mid-range hotel or a luxury one will set you back anywhere from INR2000 to INR7000, respectively.

Where and what to eat in Ahmedabad

When it comes to dining Ahmedabad , arguably, has the best range of eateries in the whole of Gujarat.

While there we heartily recommend you try the Gujarati thali, which consists of a multitude of delicious vegetarian dishes accompanied by rice and chapati and finishes with traditional hand-made ice cream. One of these specialties will set you back around INR400 in a clean and modern restaurant. Cheaper options are also aplenty if you look to smaller, local, dhabas.

There are also plenty of options for carnivores, with designated restaurants proffering spicy chicken, mutton, and fish curries.

While in Ahmedabad, we recommend you also try a malpuva, a sweet, deep-fried pancake smothered with saffron syrup and topped with rose petals. It is filling, delicious, widely available and will cost you anywhere between INR75 to INR100. While in Ahmedabad you will also find plenty of South Indian, continental, and fusion-cuisine restaurants; coffee house, ice cream parlous and mock-cocktails stalls. You will, however, be hard pushed to find alcoholic refreshments anywhere, except big chain hotels, as Gujarat is a resolutely dry state.

How to get around Ahmedabad

Getting around Ahmedabad is relatively easy, either by local transport, taxis or rickshaws.

Due to the fact that Ahmedabad is the largest and most populous city in the state, travelling on foot may prove to be difficult.

The local airport is situated just over four miles north of the city centre, a taxi to Lal Darwaja will cost you about INR350, a rickshaw will be half the price, while a local bust will set you back a mere INR10.

The most convenient way to do some sightseeing around the city is by rickshaw . These are widely available and are run by well-informed drivers who, more often than not, tend to speak English. Rickshaws in Ahmedabad operate on a meter-based-system, so do make sure your driver set the meter counter to zero before you set off. Additionally, bargain at will. It is customary, especially if you wish to make several stops along the way. A rickshaw driver may well be regarded as a tour guide, so chose one wisely.

How to get to and from Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad’s airport has regular domestic flights to and from several large India cities, including Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Delhi, Goa, Bangalore, Kolkata, and Jaipur. To get the best deals, and the cheapest tickets, we recommend you book ahead with India’s domestic airlines such as Air India, Indigo, Kingfisher, and SpiceJet. Prices vary according to your destination and time of year, but you can easily get a flight from Ahmedabad to Delhi for as little as INR5000.

The city’s airport also runs international flight to Qatar, UAE, Kuwait, Oman, and Singapore.

Another option to travel to and from Ahmedabad is via train. There is a ticket booking office outside the main train station, with a solitary window which handles tourist quota, proffering tickets to major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Udaipur, Vadodara and Jamnagar to name but a few. Ticket prices vary greatly according to destination and class of carriage but a three AC fare to Delhi, for example, will set you back around INR3000.

There are also regular local and tourist buses that run from Ahmedabad’s ST bus stand (Sabarmati Terminal) to various destinations, including Udaipur, Jaipur, and Delhi. A Volvo bus to Udaipur will cost around INR450, to Jaipur around INR1000 and one to Delhi will set you back somewhere between INR1500 to INR2000. We recommend you either book your tickets through an authorised travel agent, your hotel or directly at the train/bus station to ensure you get to your desired destination without any unnecessary delays or mix-ups.

Is Ahmedabad a safe place to visit?

Ahmedabad is a major city, therefore, it is important to keep in mind that pickpocketing, general scams and minor criminal activities are rife as in any other city in India, and elsewhere. The city, however, is well policed and relatively secure. But please keep in mind that Gujarat is a dry and fairly conservative state, therefore, you are best to keep in line with modesty.

Adalaj Step Well | Among the Best Places to Visit near Ahmedabad within 100 km

Adalaj Step Well | Among the Best Places to Visit near Ahmedabad within 100 km

Step wells are quite a common sight in Gujarat, as they used to be the primary water source for the area before modern day plumbing rendered it out of use. The love of the people of Gujarat for colours and decoration is reflected in these step wells too. They are ornately carved and decorated just like the other architectural wonders in the area.  Adalaj step well is the most famous of all the others in the city. It was constructed in 1499 by Rudaba i, who was the wife of one of the prominent chieftains of the city. Each floor of the step well has intricately carved platforms and galleries that overlook the depth of the octagonal well. Hindu mythology has been vividly showcased through the carving of deities on the pillars on each floor. The shafts of the well are adorned with floral and geometric motifs which are interlaced with figurines that amplify the beauty of the well. The pavilions are lit with diffused lighting in the evening, which adds an intriguing look to the step well. The step well speaks highly of the fine craftsmanship and the architectural brilliance employed in its designing.

On July 8, 2017, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared Ahmedabad as the World Heritage city, making it the first Indian city to bag that title. This paper deals with the city receiving the prestigious title and the challenges that tag along with it. It discusses various policies that can help preserve and restore the heritage houses and the obstacles faced while availing those policies. There are two sides to every coin and hence the “World Heritage” status comes along with its own list of pros and cons. The paper also briefly describes the contribution of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) in task of preserving the heritage structures.

In India, dense historic urban settlements were developed with the intention of provision of spaces for adequate engagement of the people. Public squares and streets became important places of interaction. ‘Historic core,’ especially had public spaces meant for various socioeconomic groups. city is a blend of a harmonious past and a vivacious present. Number of historical and architecturally important buildings were built during Muslim and Moghul rules. One of the first built structures within the walled city is the fort, a citadel founded by sultan Ahmed Shah in 1411 with a huge public square in front, developed for purpose of procession and gathering. This precinct went through various layers of transformation in different eras and now have become vulnerabledue to congestion and encroachment. Though, a need for intervention was felt to bring back the lost vitality of the precinct, it was realized that a comprehensive approach would be the necessity. Conservation and sensitive development approach was taken to tackle this problem through pedestrianization of the precinct, re-routing of traffic and restoration of fort. Larger level traffic and parking issues were also considered beyond the site. Alternative use of fort as tourist information center was considered. Urban design guidelines were proposed for harmonious development in the surrounding area. This proposal was considered for funding under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) and was implemented. Many issues were faced during implementation of project due to contextualization of informal commercial, religious and other cultural activities. Political, social and administrative factors also played immense role in implementation of proposal. Now since Ahmedabad has achieved the status of World Heritage City through UNESCO certification further implementation of this project will be relatively easy due to envisaged strong political and administrative support.

In this paper we address the role of architectural criticism in the conception and practice of modernism in India – since post-independence till the present. India has witnessed a vast difference in the culture of the built environment. And as Modern Style of architecture arose from enormous transformations in the west during the late 19th, and flourished to India, Architectural Criticism says, it’s about time, that a new style of architecture, a style that describes the ‘Indianness’, originates, takes over, describes, and flourishes to bring a new face to the context of Architecture in India.

One could hardly imagine a time more exciting for an Indian architect to start a career than at the close of the 1940s, when India had just gained freedom from colonial rule. In many places around the world this was the time when enormous funds were invested in new and often very novel urban developments that were to provide, for better or worse, the model of metropolitan life for the generations to come. By that time, it was generally believed that architecture and urban planning have the power to shape human habits and inspire worldviews. This was also true for India, and at this particular moment it was crucial for decision makers and for the designers to decide on what style and what planning philosophy should they stake. What should the background image of the new Republic of India be, what values should be put through, what goals should be proclaimed? In my presentation, I am going to focus on these decisive years of modern architecture in India and on its major figures.
