Celebrity Cruises Is Having a Buy-one-get-one Sale Right Now — With Cruises Up to 75% Off

The sale must be booked by September 7.

buy one get one free cruise

Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

Calling all cruisers: Celebrity Cruises has big savings on cruises across the world with a BOGO offer that includes up to 75 percent off a second guest.

The sale, which must be booked between Aug. 3 and Sept. 7, is available for nearly all of Celebrity’s sailings from Aug. 3 through April 30, 2025, the company shared with Travel + Leisure . The promotion is valid on cruises that are three nights or longer.

The sale is not available on Alaska Cruisetours or on cruises to the Galapagos.

Travelers who book their cruise with a nonrefundable deposit will receive 75 percent off the cruise fare for the second guest in the same stateroom. Travelers who book their cruise with a refundable deposit will receive 50 percent off the cruise fare for the second guest.

In addition, travelers who book the sale from Aug. 3 through Aug. 8 will also receive an onboard credit of $100 for inside or ocean view staterooms or a credit of $200 for veranda staterooms and above.

Onboard credits can be used to pay for anything from specialty dining or drinks packages to the spa, an onboard shopping spree, or even shore excursions.

Celebrity Cruises , which is part of the Royal Caribbean Group, recently became the latest cruise line to increase the cost of its automatic gratuities . The cruise line now automatically charges travelers in inside, ocean view, and veranda staterooms $18 per person per day, while guests in the Concierge Class and AquaClass staterooms are automatically charged $18.50 per person per day.

The increase amounts to an additional 50 cents per person per day in each stateroom category.

Celebrity will also launch its newest ship, the Celebrity Ascent , later this year, becoming the second Celebrity ship to feature chef Daniel Boulud’s Le Voyage restaurant. The ship will also feature a plant-based tasting menu at the Eden Restaurant — complete with vegan wine pairings.

WHY CHOOSE Norwegian Cruise Lines

Accommodation.

Every Norwegian Cruise Line ship offers a huge choice of accommodation from comfortable, affordable Inside Staterooms to family friendly Staterooms and the luxury of our Suites and Villas. So whether you are travelling solo, planning a romantic cruise for two or holidaying with the whole family, you will always find what is just right for you.

Accommodation Designed for you

When it comes to the time to call it a day, you’ll discover a fantastic choice of accommodation. All of the NCL Cruise ships offer an array of luxurious Suites, many in an exclusive enclave at the top of the ship with its own Courtyard, pool and sun deck – The Haven by Norwegian™. Suite guests also enjoy special extras like 24-hour butler service, concierge service and invitations to exclusive breakfasts and lunches.

Other Norwegian Cruise Line accommodation options include Mini Suites and Balcony Staterooms, Oceanview and Inside Staterooms and a big range of flexible, adaptable accommodation designed with families in mind. If you’re travelling solo, selected ships feature unique Studios with no single supplement. They’re located in a private keycard access complex and come complete with their own Studio Lounge, where you can meet fellow Studio guests over coffee or cocktails. And wherever you lay your head, little luxuries like twice-daily stateroom service and 24-hour room service come as standard.

Imagine dining in a different restaurant and choosing from a tempting new menu every night of your cruise. All of the NCL cruises offer a great choice of dining venues included in your fare, including two Main Dining Rooms, huge buffets, on-deck grills and cafés. A cover charge opens up a world of different cuisines in the speciality restaurants. Think authentic French cuisine, Italian, pan-Asian, American steakhouses, Brazilian and Japanese Teppanyaki, all served in unique venues with a great ambience.

Delectable Dining

Key to the experience is Norwegian Norwegian Cruise Line’s Freestyle Dining with up to 28 tempting dining choices on a single ship. Lots are included in your cruise fare, like up to three Main Dining Rooms, each with a classis or contemporary ambience and a different menu every night. Then there’s the lavish buffet with cooked-to-order dishes and a huge salad bar, 24-hour informal eateries, deck grills and room service around the clock. A cover charge opens up a world of dining choices in their signature speciality restaurants, where authentic cuisine ranges from Japanese Teppanyaki to gourmet French, rustic Italian to a Brazilian Churrascaria and a great all-American steakhouse. And whichever you choose, no fixed dining times and no pre-assigned seating let you set the tone for your evening, taking your seat when and where you choose between 5.30pm and 10.30pm with restaurants open until midnight. You can dress the way you choose, too – resort casual is fine day and night. Norwegian Cruise Line's latest ships take Freestyle Dining into a new era with a fine dining seafood experience inspired by their first celebrity chef, Geoffrey Zakarian. You can also dine alfresco on The Waterfront, the revolutionary oceanfront promenade or at the heart of the action at 678 Ocean Place, the free-flowing atrium.

Destinations

Norwegian Cruise Line will take you to some of the world’s most fabulous destinations, where you’ll have the freedom to explore at your own pace. The multi-award-winning European programme includes year-round Mediterranean cruises from Barcelona, Civitavecchia (Rome) and Venice, taking in grand cities, chic resorts and gorgeous Greek Islands. You could escape for a week, or enjoy the ultimate Grand Mediterranean voyage, taking in such contrasting ports as Venice, Istanbul and Barcelona or seek out the winter sunshine in the Canary Islands and Morocco.

Their Northern Europe cruises take in the best of the Baltic Sea, the Norwegian Fjords, a circumnavigation of the British Isles and an exciting voyage to the North Cape during the summer solstice.

You can also chose to cruise like a Norwegian in the Caribbean, sailing from six exciting ports including Miami, New York City and New Orleans to the Eastern, Western and Southern Caribbean. You could even experience their latest ship, the incredible Norwegian Getaway sailing year-round from Miami to the Eastern Caribbean and the Bahamas. Her sister ship, Norwegian Breakaway, makes her home in New York, sailing to the Bahamas and Florida and to Bermuda.

Many cruises call at Norwegian Cruise Line's own private island, Great Stirrup Cay, where you can cast yourself away for the day, enjoying land and water sports. They're also creating a brand new private island experience, called Harvest Caye and set on the unspoilt southern coast of Belize.

Other destinations include Alaska, where you combine a spectacular 7-night cruise with a land package taking in the Canadian Rockies or Alaska’s Denali National Park; and autumn sailings along the coastline of New England and Canada. And nobody does Hawai`i quite like Norwegian Cruise Line. That’s because the U.S.-flagged ship, Pride of America, is the only cruise ship to call at all four main islands in just one week.

A hot ticket for winter is a South America cruise between Valparaiso and Buenos Aires with highlights including a voyage around Cape Horn, the Falkland Islands and the Chilean fjords.

What's Onboard?

When morning comes, you’ll always find the perfect place to spend your day. You can get wet and go wild at multi-slide Aqua Parks on their latest ships or hit the heights on our climbing walls. Chill by the pool or break a sweat on the multi-use sports courts or in the state-of-the-art gym. Or indulge in some me-time in the luxurious Mandara Spa® with its thermal suites, exclusive body therapies and beauty treatments using the finest natural oils and exotic ingredients.

And when it’s time to go ashore, Norwegian’s great shore excursions are your passport to discovery, adventures and experiences that you’ll remember forever.

Electrifying Entertainment

Norwegian ships are big on entertainment with electrifying nightlife in exciting venues all over the ship. Take in a high-energy music and dance production show in a superb theatre, catch some cool jazz, take to the dance floor or just hop the night the away around up to 22 bars and lounges, each with its own unique vibe and ambience.

The newest ships put on even more of a show with big name headline acts, like Blue Man Group, Legends in Concert® and Broadway blockbusters including Rock of Ages and Legally Blonde The Musical™. You can chill out in a genuine Ice Bar kept at eight degrees below zero, hit the casino and enjoy a cirque-style dinner show with amazing acrobatics and special effects.

Entertainment

When it comes to entertainment, Norwegian definitely have some of the best and most exciting at sea! From Broadway shows, live music and theatrical dining experiences, Norwegian definitely has something for you.

Cirque Dreams

This one-of-a-kind theatrical dining experience takes place in the colourful big top! Feast your eyes on the outstanding acrobats, musicians and aerialists while you enjoy a wonderful dinner.

7 (Legit) Ways to Cruise for Free… That Most People Don’t Know

The only thing better than taking a cruise? What about taking a free cruise? And I’m not talking about secretly sneaking yourself onto the ship when no one is looking or other silly — and illegal — tricks.

Believe it or not, there are ways for you to cruise for free. And while it’s not some free pass to sail whenever and wherever you want, if you know how to play your cards — or get lucky — then it is possible.

We cover some of the most common ways that people score free cruises below. Just know that while all of these ways work, more likely than not you’re still going to have to pay to take a cruise.

Free Cruises Through Loyalty Rewards

buy one get one free cruise

The first way that you can get a free cruise? Well, it will definitely take some time and money, but you can get a free cruise if you stay loyal to the cruise line.

Every cruise line offers up a loyalty program. For every night you sail with the cruise line, you earn points. Usually it’s one point per night, but some cabin types and special offers can get you more for each night sailed.

The more points you earn, the higher your loyalty status, which translates into perks on board. This can be everything from discounts to free drinks, and yes, even free cruises. However, don’t think it will necessarily be easy.

For instance, Royal Caribbean’s Crown & Anchor Society offers up a cruise certificate for a 7-night balcony cabin to its Pinnacle Club level members. To reach that level takes 700 points. It’s the same level for Norwegian Cruise Line.

Gamble Your Way to a Free Trip

You likely know that if you head to Las Vegas and spend enough money, then you soon see offers for free rooms to entice you to visit again. What you may not know is that the same thing happens for cruises. Spend enough onboard in the casino and you’ll be treated like a VIP, including with the possibility of a free cruise.

Now, it is a little tough to call it a “free” cruise, because there’s little doubt that if you’re gambling enough to be offered one of these rooms then you’ve likely spent a decent amount in the casino.

Still, it is a way to get a cruise without opening up your wallet, along with lots of other perks. For instance, the highest levels of the Carnival Players Club can not only get the cruise, but also complimentary parking, Platinum stats on the ship, free drink package, shore excursions, and wi-fi.

Now how much do you have to bet to get free cruise offers? I’m not privy to that information, but I can tell you it’s more than what I spend in the casino.

Cruise Line Sales (Family/Kids Sail Free)

buy one get one free cruise

For most people, the easiest and most sure-fire way to cruise for free is to keep your eyes peeled for a sale. It’s something that can apply to anyone, doesn’t take sailing 700 nights with a cruise line, or gambling tons of money.

But to be sure, there’s no “free” sale where you get on the ship without paying a dime. Instead, cruise lines will offer deals where one person pays full fare, but another person in the cabin can sail for free.

For example, Princess is offering a sale as of this taping where kids — as the third or fourth passenger in a cabin — sail at no additional cost. Margaritaville at Sea is offering a limited time fare where you buy one cruise and get the next one free. So purchase a regular fare and the next trip is free.

If you keep tabs on the sales (we suggest signing up for a cruise line’s email list), then you see these sorts of offers from time to time.

Cancellation/Interruption Compensation

One way to get a free cruise may be something that you don’t want to experience. Most cruises go off without a hitch. But from time to time, issues can come up. For instance, recently a Norwegian Cruise Line ship hit an iceberg in Alaska and was forced to return home to Seattle early. Other issues can range from weather to ship breakdowns, which lead to an interruption of the rest of the cruise.

Whenever there is an interruption or the cancellation of a cruise like this, passengers are usually compensated. A refund of cruise fare is the most typical offer to keep everyone happy, but it’s not unheard of for a credit good for a future cruise to be given additionally.

For instance, when Norwegian Sun clipped an iceberg in Alaska and had to return home, passengers were reportedly give a full refund for that trip, and then a 100% Future Cruise Credit. So while no one wants to have the trip ruined, it’s hard to be disappointed when you get a free cruise out of it.

Travel Agent & Media Cruises

Media credentials

Another way to sail for free is something that I’ve personally been able to experience from time to time. Whenever there is a new ship, cruise lines love to create some buzz around it in order to get people to book. That’s where if you’re a member of the media or a travel agent with a good history with the cruise line, you might score a free cruise.

Now these trips are normally short. They often run just a few days in order to let everyone see and experience the new ship, so it’s not the same experience as a full-fledged cruise. And frankly, if you are there it’s much more of a business trip than anything else.

Even so, there are some unique experiences that these cruises can provide like when I was able to sail on a test cruise for a ship before it began sailing again with paying passengers of the general public.

Credit Card Points

One of the easiest ways to cruise for free? Cash in those credit card points that you’ve been saving up to put toward your cruise.

These days just about every credit card comes with some sort of reward system. I personally use Citi’s Double Cash card. It has no annual fee and I earn 1% on every purchase and another 1% whenever I pay it off.

And if you’re the type that likes to play the credit card rewards game, then there are all sorts of offers for new cards where you can earn hundreds of dollars in bonuses for being a new customer.

It can take some time to earn enough rewards to actually pay for an entire cruise, but even if you’re a moderate spender, having enough for a cruise every couple of years isn’t out of the question.

Sweepstakes Winners

Carnival Cruise Sweepstakes

Finally, if you want a free cruise then you might have to get lucky with a sweepstakes. Sweepstakes have been around forever, and they are still going strong. And while you might not realize it, there are regular contests you can enter to win a free cruise.

Earlier this year Pepsi and Carnival had a contest where 15 winners chosen at random from the entries won a free cruise for two aboard the cruise line to the Caribbean.

Norwegian Cruise Line just wrapped up its annual “Norwegian’s Giving Joy” contest where 100 teachers won a trip aboard its newest ship Norwegian Prima when it sails from Galveston in October 2022.

These sweepstakes might seem like a shot in the dark. And yes, the odds are most likely that you won’t win. Even so, somebody has to win a free cruise and there’s no cost to enter. So why not you?

Would your suggestion include a recommendation that they not double the fare before making the offer?

Haha

You may want to look at the current bookings for both 2021 and especially 2022. For some lines (particularly premium/luxury/expedition), you will find that most popular itineraries are notated: "Wait List"  "Wait List" "Wait List" "Wait List."

I had the same opinion of NavyBankTeacher when we met on a cruise several years ago.Glad that you agree. 😀

Isn't this the business model that Viking used for years?

Oh, I definitely was NOT responding to NBT, who more often than not has a firm grip on the real world.

I do not know why she would think that I live in an alternate reality .Frankly I have no idea what that is .

1 hour ago, CruisingAlong4Now said: Isn't this the business model that Viking used for years?

I do not know anything about Viking .

Why not consider a simpler approach - in stead of two for the price of one: how about just a simple half price sale?  For the same net revenue, the lines could attract many more cruisers - there are plenty out there who can’t afford two for the price of one (considering available vacation time as well as discretionary funds) but could easily afford one at half price - yielding at least the same return to the line.

Mary229

Why?  Their cash problems are not going to be solved by selling air even at half price.  They need something to sell, namely cruising.  Multiple lines have repeatedly said that demand is not the issue that their current bookings have been solid, not strong but solid.

Omg a marketing campaign. And FREE?! This is the best deal ever.

We have only been tracking Viking Ocean for 4 years and have never experienced any of the points raised in the post you quoted:

  • Never seen BOGO cruises, although they did have 2 for 1 deposits, when we booked our last cruise
  • The post you quoted mentioned Inside & Ocean View cabins, which don't exist on Viking, with the lowest being a balcony
  • BoGo Specialty Restaurants - again not even close, as both specialty restaurants are included in the base fare and you can use them as often as you want.
  • Didn't see any cheap watches or t-shirts aboard, and the quality jacket we received is still in mint condition

Not sure which Viking you are referring to, but both the current Viking Cruises and long departed Royal Viking Line are/were quality operations.

NantahalaCruiser

Personally, prefer to buy one for a reasonable price rather than two combined for a reasonable combined price.  BOGO has never enticed me.

Haha.   Right now it is buy one and get a future cruise credit.  Kind of like  "Buy one, get none".

I don't think cruse lines are going to have any problem filling ships.  The issue isn't demand.  It is the pandemic.

BTW, I think I live in the same universe as you.   If it is an alternate one, I like it!   😀

Not my intent to demean Viking's business model or integrity.  Merely stated a fact that Viking used this 2 for 1 business model for their river cruises.  Their oft sent brochures touted 2 for 1.  Hurry up and book now.  It was the standard joke on the river cruise board.  Don't know what your other points are.

On a river cruise in Russia you’ll likely visit two of this expansive country’s most important cities, St. Petersburg and Moscow. St. Petersburg has always been more of a city focused on the arts and Moscow on business and politics. Tolstoy even remarked about this dichotomy in his masterpiece novel Anna Karenina . In St. Petersburg you’ll find the ornate Hermitage Museum, an art museum which was started by Catherine the Great. In Moscow you’ll be wowed by the colorful onion domes of St. Basil’s Cathedral at Red Square. When cruising through Russia you’ll also get a chance to experience the rural parts of Western Russia in Goritsy or the Mandrogi village, which is reconstructed to look just as it did during the 18 th century.

Things to Do on a Cruise to Russia

Adopt the pluck and determination of the Russian people and realize that there is nothing you can’t do on your cruise to Russia. Russia is full of crazy stories, exciting history and beautiful traditions, so drink it in with some unforgettable experiences. A few of our favorite things to do are outlined below:

Russia Cruises Kremlin Palace and Wall in Moscow, Russia

  • Explore the armory at the Kremlin where you can see the stunning royal jewels of the czars and czarinas. Don’t forget to check out the Faberge eggs, intricately decorated and jewel-adorned eggs created in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
  • Visit a wooden church with 22 domes that is made without one single nail. This remarkable building is in Kizhi Island surrounded by other buildings at an open air museum.

Russia Cruises Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia

  • Spend a day discovering the more than 3 million works that make up the Hermitage Museum, which is housed in the Winter Palace, a former home of Russian royals located in St. Petersburg.
  • Though ballet comes from Italy, Russia has made this elegant dance form what it is today. Be sure to enjoy a performance at either the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow or the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg.

Russia Cruises GUM Department Store in Moscow, Russia

  • Enjoy a Shashlik lunch. Shashlik is a Russian variation of a shish kebab which generally consists of grilled beef or cubed lamb that is been marinated and is roasted on a spit often paired with a variety of vegetables such as tomato, onion and eggpant.  This is a popular fast food dish in Russia.
  • Go to GUM, Moscow's exorbitant shopping mall, to shop (or just browse) through one designer store after the other.

River cruise lines offer in-depth visits to Russia where you’ll get a real sense of the nation’s culture – from the big cities to the rural outposts. Each day is packed with history, art and tradition.

Russia: Departure Ports

Russian river cruises either flow north or south, meaning they either start in St. Petersburg or Moscow. Moscow is the current capital of the country, but St. Petersburg used to hold that title and was the home of many of the country’s czars. Both of these large cities offer great art museums and incredible domed churches. No matter where your river cruise starts, you’ll get a real sense of Russian culture as St. Petersburg offers an exploration of Russian history while Moscow is on the cutting edge and looking forward.

If you're angling for an affordable family cruise , you'll be happy to know that several major cruise lines let children sail for free (either regularly or during special promotions). Read on to discover which lines cater to families with kids sail free offers.

Cruise lines where kids sail free

Holland america line, norwegian cruise line, royal caribbean international, costa cruises, msc cruises.

Find your perfect cruise

Deal: Holland America Line is offering a "Kids Cruise Free" promotion on select itineraries in 2025. The offer applies to several itineraries including Hawaii , the Caribbean and the Panama Canal; to qualify, children must be 18 or younger and cruising as third and/or fourth guests in the same cabin as adults. As with similar promotions, taxes and port fees are still required for each child's sailing.

Additionally, kids ages 12 and under eat for half off in specialty restaurants or for free from a dedicated kids menu. Reduced children's rates for shore excursions are also available.

Family-friendly perks: Amenities onboard Holland America ships include kids clubs and youth programs, as well as shore excursions oriented to families with little ones in tow. Plenty of stateroom options can also accommodate larger bookings. The Nieuw Statendam and Koningsdam ships, in particular, feature oversized staterooms with beds for four, a large sitting area and a spacious veranda.

Deal: Norwegian Cruise Line often lets third and fourth guests cruise free on select itineraries. During other promotions, the cruise line will let the third through eighth passengers sail free. Cruises to which this promotion applies are offered all over the world, including Bermuda , the Caribbean and Canada .

Some of the itineraries that qualify for free third and fourth guests also come with complimentary amenities like an unlimited open bar, specialty dining, shore excursions and/or complimentary Wi-Fi. Additionally, some of the itineraries include generous discounts on the total cruise cost , as well as free airfare for a second guest (when booked through the cruise line).

Family-friendly perks: With Norwegian's all-ages kids clubs, family dining, entertainment and activities included in one bundled rate, planning a kid-approved vacation with the cruise line is a breeze. Many Norwegian ships also feature an array of family-friendly staterooms with plenty of extra space. For example, the luxurious Norwegian Prima offers a two-bedroom family villa with a large balcony in "The Haven" – its exclusive area for VIP guests.

Deal: Royal Caribbean offers a "Kids Sail Free" deal several times each year, allowing children 12 or younger to cruise free provided they are the third guests (or beyond) staying in the same cabin as at least two paying adults. Passengers will soon pay more for a Princess cruise. Here's why.

Portrait of Nathan Diller

Travelers can expect to pay more next time they sail with Princess Cruises .

The cruise line is raising its crew appreciation charge starting later this month. Passengers booked in suites will pay $19 per person, per day, up from $18, while fees for guests in mini suites, cabanas and Club Class accommodations will increase from $17 to $18. For guests in all other staterooms, the charge will jump from $16 to $17.

The increase will roll out to its fleet on the same schedule as updates to the line’s Princess Premier package , according to a spokesperson:

  • Enchanted Princess on Aug. 31
  • Majestic Princess and Sky Princess on Sept. 1
  • Crown Princess on Sept. 2
  • Ruby Princess on Sept. 3
  • Grand Princess on Sept. 4
  • Emerald Princess, Discovery Princess and Sun Princess on Sept. 7
  • Caribbean Princess and Regal Princess on Sept. 12
  • Royal Princess and Sapphire Princess on Sept. 14
  • Island Princess on Sept. 25
  • Diamond Princess on Sept. 26
  • Coral Princess on Oct. 17

The charges are automatically added to guests’ onboard accounts but can be adjusted before disembarking. Princess previously raised its crew appreciation rates in February 2023.

Those fees, along with service charges on select purchases, are pooled and “distributed throughout the year in the form of compensation, including bonuses, to crewmembers fleetwide who interact directly with guests and/or behind the scenes throughout every cruise, including those in the Bar, Dining, Entertainment, Housekeeping, Guest Services, Galley and Onboard Revenue areas,” according to the line’s website .

Cruise lines periodically increase gratuity charges, usually in response to external factors like inflation or shifts in economic activity. “You look at the cost of hotels and transportation, fuel and food and everything else, and I think it's really just a normal response,” Danny Genung, CEO of travel agency Harr Travel, told USA TODAY in November . “You know, compensating employees, offsetting costs that have increased.”

Holland America Line also raised its crew appreciation charge in February, following similar moves from lines like Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises.

The idea in theory is quite simple, per the IRS – “You may qualify for a credit up to $7,500 under Internal Revenue Code Section 30D if you buy a new, qualified plug-in EV or fuel cell electric vehicle (FCV). The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 changed, but extended the terms for this credit for vehicles purchased between 2023 to 2032.

That said, you cannot simply go out and buy an electric vehicle and expect Uncle Sam to cut $7,500 off your taxes come April. In reality, the amount you qualify for is based on both your income tax as well as several specifications of the electric vehicle you purchase, including where it’s built. More on that below.

First, let’s take a second to truly understand how the Federal EV tax credit currently works.

First and foremost, it’s important to understand three little words the government slips in front of the $7,500 credit – “may” and “up to.” As in, you may qualify for up to $7,500 in federal tax credit for your electric vehicle. At first glance, this credit may sound like a simple flat rate, but that is unfortunately not the case.

For example, if you purchased a Tesla Model 3 and owed say, $3,500 in income tax for the year, then that is the federal tax credit you would receive. If you owed $10,000 in federal income tax, then you would qualify for the full $7,500 credit.

It’s important to note that any unused portion of the $7,500 is not available as a refund nor as a credit for next year’s taxes. Bummer.

2024 Tesla Prices

The following terms were introduced by the Biden Administration in the summer of 2022 and went into effect on January 1, 2023:

  • The timeline to qualify is extended a decade from January 2023 to December 2032
  • Tax credit cap for automakers after they hit 200,000 EVs sold is eliminated, making GM, Tesla, and Toyota once again eligible
  • That means you can get your credit up front at the dealer, but these terms may not kick in until 2024
  • Two binary pieces separate the full $7,500 credit meaning the vehicle either qualifies for each piece of the credit or doesn’t
  • $3,750 of the new credit is based upon the vehicle having at least 50% of its battery-critical minerals from North America or countries with a free trade agreement with the United States.  This is a list of countries with free trade agreements with the US .
  • The other $3,750 of the new credit is based on at least 50% of the battery components of the vehicle coming from the United States or countries with a free trade agreement with the US
  • Note – these battery requirements have been updated as of May, 2024. More below.
  • The 50% critical minerals requirement increases to 60% in 2025, 70% in 2026, 80% from 2027 onward.
  • The 60% battery components requirement now stays as such through 2025, then increases to 70% in 2026, 80% in 2027, 90% in 2028 and 100% from 2029 onward.
  • Beginning in 2025, any vehicle with battery minerals or components from a foreign entity of concern is excluded from the tax credit
  • Qualifying EVs must also have a battery size of at least 7 kWh and a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 14,000 pounds
  • Subject to other requirements like lower annual income (see below)
  • Revised credit applies to battery electric vehicles with an MSRP below $55,000
  • Also includes zero-emission vans, SUVs, and trucks with MSRPs up to $80,000
  • Includes separate qualifications and limits
  • The federal EV tax credit will be available to individuals reporting adjusted gross incomes of $150,000 or less, $225,000 for heads of households, or $300,000 for joint filers
  • The new credit will also continue to apply to Plug-in Hybrid EVs (PHEVs) as long as they meet the same requirements outlined above

Revamped used electric vehicle tax credit

Used EVs also got revised terms that now offer a credit equal to 30% percent of the sale price (up to $4,000). That should help consumers like yourselves get some change back in your pocket at the end of the fiscal year. As long as you stick to these terms as outlined by the IRS .

To qualify as a customer, you must:

  • Be an individual who bought the vehicle for use and not for resale
  • Not be the original owner
  • Not be claimed as a dependent on another person’s tax return
  • Not have claimed another used clean vehicle credit in the three years before the EV purchase date
  • Modified adjusted gross income must not exceed $75k for individuals, $112,500 for heads of households, and $150k for joint returns

For the used EV to qualify for federal tax credits, it must:

  • Have a sale price of $25,000 or less
  • For example, a vehicle purchased in 2023 would need a model year of 2021 or older
  • Not have already been transferred after August 16, 2022, to a qualified buyer
  • Have a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 14,000 pounds
  • Be an eligible FCV or plug-in EV with a battery capacity of at least 7 kilowatt hours (kWh)
  • Be for use primarily in the United States
  • For qualified used EVs, the dealer reports the required information to you at the time of sale and to the IRS
  • Purchaser must be an individual (no businesses) to qualify for used credit
  • A used vehicle qualifies for tax credit only once in its lifetime

In May 2024, the IRS shared its final rules for the federal tax credit program. The original rules required qualifying vehicles to be assembled in North America alongside gradually higher percentages of battery materials and components to be produced on the continent and in countries with free trade agreements with the US.

Following months of difficulties amongst automakers trying to become compliant to qualify, the US Treasury Department and IRS have relaxed some of those parameters, including the sourcing of graphite, electrolyte salts, binders, and additives… at least until 2027.

This latest news follows an October 2023 update that pertained to the transferring of credits. Per the IRS:

The Internal Revenue Service issued  proposed regulations ,  Revenue Procedure 2023-33  (PDF) and  frequently asked questions  today for the transfer of new and previously owned clean vehicle credits from the taxpayer to an eligible entity for vehicles placed in service after Dec. 31, 2023.

This “transfer” is essentially the ability of a new EV buyer to give the tax credit to the dealer selling them their shiny new EV. In exchange, the dealer can give the equivalent “in cash or in the form of a partial payment or down payment.”

However, all the same eligibility criteria still apply even with a transfer, including the buyer having a federal tax burden.

The buyer must give the dealer all their tax information, which will then be submitted to the IRS. The dealer is not required to verify the information, and therefore, the disclosure falls on the buyer. All the other previous vehicle requirements, like MSRP limits, and for the buyers, like income limit requirements, apply here.

The only requirement that this update allows you to avoid is your tax burden. If, for some reason, you can afford to buy a new car and yet you happen to have a tax burden smaller than the full amount of tax credit you are eligible for, the IRS says that it won’t “recapture” the difference.

Vehicles that qualify for federal tax credits (August 2024)

NOTE: Not every version of the models listed below will necessarily qualify. Please check with your local dealer/seller to determine the eligibility of your specific EV.

Y'all keep reposting this article trying to keep up with the updates to the tax code and I appreciate the desire to be thorough and update old information but I find this format too cumbersome to be helpful. I think it would make more sense to post new articles each time such as "here are the BEVs that qualify AS OF <>".

1) It removes the need to have a section in current article about the old rules that have expired. People can refer to an old article if needed.

2) Because I know the article has been updated many times, I don't feel like I can trust any use of the word "current" in it. I see sentences that say "current" and I have to wonder if that is truly current or if it's an accidental leftover word from when the article was published months ago.

Even ignoring historical guidance, there's too much here. Fuel cell vehicles? BEVs under 7kWh or over 14k lbs? How many people are looking for those/ how useful is it to include this, particularly all lumped into a single article? Maybe that's useful detail but doesn't seem necessary for most consumers.

While I'm on that topic, you can probably split out BEV/ PHEV as separate articles too, because most people aren't cross-shopping them.

Last thought: if it is possible to make a flowchart or an "internet quiz" on whether a car qualifies, that could be very useful. "is it a BEV, PHEV, or fuel cell vehicle..." > "Does it have more than 7kWh battery?"... etc.

NOTE: Not every version of the models listed below will necessarily qualify. Please check with your local dealer/seller to determine the eligibility of your specific PHEV.

The US Department of Energy offers a VIN decoder tool to confirm where a given EV is assembled. Check it out here .

In addition to any federal credit you may or may not qualify for, there are a number of clean transportation laws, regulations, and funding opportunities available at the state level.

We’ve compiled every state rebate, tax credit, and exemption for you and sorted it by state. Whether it’s a purchase or lease of a new or used EV or the purchase and installation of an EV charger, you could get money back, depending upon where you live. Here are all those tax credits, rebates, and exemptions sorted by state.

electric vehicle tax credit

At the federal level, the tax credits for EVs (electric cars, vans, trucks, etc) operate as money back at the end of the fiscal year you purchased or leased your vehicles based on a number of factors. The awarded credit is up to $7,500 per vehicle, but how much you may get back will depend on your annual income, whether you are filing with someone else like a spouse, and what electric vehicle you purchased. For example, if you purchased a Ford F-150 Lightning and owed $3,500 in income tax this year, then that is the federal tax credit you would receive. If you owed $10,000 in federal income tax, then you could qualify for the full $7,500 credit. It’s important to note that any unused portion of the $7,500 is not available as a refund nor as a credit for next year’s taxes. You may also be able to receive money back right away as a point-of-sale credit, but those terms probably won’t kick in until 2024 at the earliest.

As things currently stand, there is a lot up in the air right now. The first table above details all of the electric vehicles that qualify under the terms of the Inflation Reduction Act, including battery guidance. Be sure to check the date at the bottom of each table above to see when it was most recently updated.

As previously mentioned, qualifying terms for electric vehicles became more strict at the start of 2023, and EVs and their battery components must be assembled in North America to qualify. As you can see above, significantly fewer electric vehicles qualify under the new terms, but as time goes on, more and more automakers will adapt their production strategies to operate within North America and start selling vehicles that qualify. American companies like Ford , GM, and Tesla already have EVs that qualify to some extent, but others are sure to follow. We will continually update the list above as we learn more.

Excellent question. Since traditional hybrid vehicles rely primarily on combustion and do not use a plug to charge, they do not qualify for tax credits at the federal level. Credits apply to plug-in electric vehicles which include plug-in hybrid EVs and battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

Yes! Under revised terms in the Inflation Reduction Act. Used EVs will now qualify in addition to new vehicles as previously stated. As of January 1, 2023, qualifying used EVs priced below $25,000 can qualify for up to $4,000 in federal tax credits. There are some terms to note, however: – Used vehicle qualifies for tax credit only once in its lifetime. – Purchaser must be an individual (no businesses) to qualify for the used vehicle credit. – Purchaser may only claim one used vehicle credit per three years. – Used vehicle must be at least two model years old at the time of sale. – The original use of the vehicle must have occurred with an individual other than the one claiming the used tax credit. – Used vehicle must be purchased from a dealer. – Gross income cap of $75k for individuals, $112,500 for heads of households, and $150k for joint returns. – Credit may be applied at the time of sale by the dealer

Yes. Under the new terms in the Inflation Reduction Act, the MSRP of electric vehicles must be $80,000 or less for SUVs, vans, and trucks. MSRPs for all other electric vehicles must be $55,000 or less.

Modified adjusted gross income limits are $150,000 for individuals, $225,000 for heads of households, and $300,000 for joint returns. Any reported annual income below these thresholds should qualify you for some level of tax credit, as long as your new purchase is a qualifying electric vehicle.

Ukraine war latest: Zelenskyy pleads with allies for help after deadly Russian strikes

At least three people were killed this morning after Russia launched a round of air strikes against several cities in Ukraine. Below, watch a Sky News exclusive on the Ukrainian resistance operating behind Russian lines.

  • Russia unleashes missile and drone barrage across Ukraine
  • At least three dead as 15 regions hit - with explosions heard in Kyiv
  • Ukraine says it shot down 102 missiles in 'most massive' attack
  • Zelenskyy pleads with allies for help - as Kremlin issues warning
  • Search under way for military object that landed in Poland
  • Watch: Who are Ukraine's secret resistance?
  • Your questions answered: Can Ukraine advance further inside Russia?

We're pausing our live coverage of the war in Ukraine.

We'll be back with more updates and analysis tomorrow, but before we go, here's a recap of the key developments that took place today.

Russia unleashed 236 drones and missiles in a massive attack on Ukraine. Seven people were killed and 15 regions were struck, with explosions heard in the capital, Kyiv. Ukraine said hypersonic missiles were used in the assault.

Ukrainian officials called on Western allies to provide air defence resources and to allow the long-range use of their weapons on targets inside Russia.

One of the drones likely strayed into Polish territory , leading 100 soldiers to search for the equipment, said Jacek Goryszewski, spokesperson for the Polish army's operational command. NATO condemned this as "irresponsible and potentially dangerous."

"Fierce battles" raged around the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk , according to the general staff of the Ukrainian armed forces. Russian forces made 38 attempts to storm Ukrainian positions near the strategic logistics hub.

The Institute for the Study of War identified areas of the frontline from which the Russian military is likely redeploying forces to Kursk: Northern Kharkiv, Chasiv Yar and western Zaporizhzhia.

The head of the international nuclear watchdog said he will lead a mission to inspect Russia's Kursk Nuclear Power Plant tomorrow amid fighting in the region.

At least seven people have been killed and 47 people injured, including four children, by Russia's bombardment, Ukrainian authorities say.

Some civilian facilities were attacked with cluster munitions, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

Videos posted on social media showed strikes on a hydropower plant, a dam and a water reservoir.

Strikes on power or critical infrastructure were reported in Volyn and Rivne in the northwest; Khmelnytskyi, Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk in the west; Zhytomyr in the north; Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovohrad and Vinnytsia in central Ukraine; Zaporizhzhia in the southeast; and Odesa in the south.

A 69-year-old man in the Dnipropetrovsk region and a farmer in the Zaporizhzhia region were among those confirmed dead.

The other killings took place in the regions of Kharkiv, Zhytomyr and Volyn.

NATO has condemned Russia's "irresponsible" attacks after alliance member Poland reported the likely landing of a drone on its territory.

"Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russian drone fragments and missiles have been found on allied territory on several occasions," NATO spokesperson Farah Dakhlallah said.

"While we have no information indicating an intentional attack by Russia against allies, these acts are irresponsible and potentially dangerous."

There are reports of another wave of drone attacks this evening, a Ukrainian MP tells Sky News.

Ukraine is also expecting more missiles overnight, says Lesia Vasylenko.

Russia is attacking energy infrastructure, leaving regions without water and power, yet the West will not let Ukraine stop them, she says.

"It's a nonsense that Russians are attacking civilian targets inside of Ukraine on a daily basis, using missiles with components from Western countries, and then those Western countries, including the US, are blocking Ukraine being able to defend itself and to destroy the military targets from which these attacks have been launched," she says."

This is not a retaliation for the Kursk offensive, she says, pointing out that this has been part of Russia's strategy since it invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

"'Winters should be dark and cold for Ukrainians': That's that's the message that Russia is trying to convey and this is what they're trying to make real."

She adds: "When it gets really, really cold, it's going to be absolutely unliveable."

But Ukraine is not prepared to "just surrender and see our homes destroyed and see our loved ones being taken into prisons and to torture centres", says Ms Vasylenko.

As Ukraine came under fire from a massive wave of Russian missiles and drones today, beneath the streets of Kyiv, residents sung the city's anthem.

The chorus echoed through the subway, where families took shelter from the bombardment.

The Kremlin said it has seen media reports about the death of Ryan Evans, a British safety adviser working for Reuters, in a missile strike on a Ukrainian hotel.

Moscow said it only targeted military infrastructure in Ukraine. Russia has repeatedly hit civilian targets over the course of the war.

"I'll repeat once again: Strikes are carried out against military infrastructure objects, and, or against targets related to military infrastructure in one way or another," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said when asked about the incident.

Mr Peskov did not say whether he put security advisers who protect journalists in the military category.

"I have read information from employees of the agency that we're not talking about a journalist here, but about some kind of security adviser," he said.

Asked subsequently by Reuters to provide further details and explain his remarks, Mr Peskov did not immediately respond.

Ryan Evans, 38, a member of the Reuters team covering the war in Ukraine, was killed and two Reuters journalists were injured in a strike on a hotel in the eastern city of Kramatorsk.

Like many news organisations, Reuters employs safety advisers to work with journalists deployed in conflict zones.

Mr Evans, a former British soldier, had been working with Reuters since 2022 and advised its journalists on safety around the world including in Ukraine, Israel and at the Paris Olympics.

A worker was killed in a fire that ripped through Russia's Omsk oil refinery, management has said.

Another six workers were injured, the refinery added.

Earlier today, the local governor said seven people were in hospital, with one in a serious condition.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear. Several Russian oil refineries have been targeted by Ukrainian drone attacks.

Some reports on social media said a huge explosion was heard across several districts of the west Siberia city, located around 1,700 miles east of Moscow.

The Omsk refinery processes more than 21 million metric tons, accounting for 8% of Russia's total oil refining volume.

The plant, controlled by Gazprom Neft, said the fire would not affect its production plan.

"Fierce battles are raging" around the eastern city of Pokrovsk, according to the general staff of the Ukrainian armed forces.

Russian forces have made 38 attempts to storm Ukrainian positions near the strategic logistics hub today, with clashes ongoing in 14 locations, it said.

"There remains a tense situation in the Pokrovsky direction," the general staff said, referring to the name for the district.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine has decided to "further strengthen" Pokrovsk after being briefed by his army chief on the situation in the area.

Russian forces have been inching forward for months in the Donetsk region, where Pokrovsk is located.

The advance quickened in recent weeks as Moscow's troops  mounted relentless attacks in the direction of Pokrovsk.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has identified areas of the frontline from which the Russian military is likely redeploying forces to Kursk.

Moscow is drawing troops from northern Kharkiv, Chasiv Yar and western Zaporizhzhia - the latter of which readers may remember was a focal point of Ukraine's counteroffensive last year.

Russian command is resisting pressure to redeploy forces away from its "high priority offensive" on Pokrovsk in Donetsk, said the ISW.

It will "likely continue to draw forces from lower priority offensive operations elsewhere throughout the theatre to defend in Kursk", the ISW said.

The Russian defence ministry says it struck Ukrainian forces with airstrikes at more than a dozen places along the front in the Kursk region today.

Moscow said it also repelled attacks in seven areas of Kursk.

The ministry said it was hunting for Ukrainian sabotage units which had hidden in the forests in an attempt to penetrate deeper into Russian territory.

Russia's attack on Ukraine today was its largest air bombardment, Reuters reports Ukraine's air force commander as saying.

The air force shot down 102 of 127 Russian missiles and 99 of 109 drones, Mykola Oleshchuk said.

Russia has bombarded Ukraine for more than two and half years, and launched attacks on 15 regions this morning.

Mr Oleshchuk said the attack included:

  • 109 Shahed drones launched from Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Kursk, Yeisk, Chauda and Crimea
  • 77 Kh-101 cruise missiles from fighter jets over Volgograd and the Caspian Sea
  • 28 Kalibr cruise missiles from surface/underwater carriers in the Black Sea
  • 10 Kh-59/Kh-69 guided air missiles from fighter jets over Belgorod and Mariupol
  • Six Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles from Kursk, Voronezh and Crimea
  • Three Kinzhal ballistic missiles fired from the Ryazan and Lipetsk regions
  • 3 Kh-22 cruise missiles from the Voronezh region
