Great Barrier Reef Cruise Highlights

Port douglas.

Visit this charming seaside resort town, where you’ll find restaurants, cafés, and boutiques along chic Macrossan Street. Port Douglas is a popular starting point for trips to the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree National Park. A visit here would not be complete without taking a trip to the rainforest, where you can zip-line through the trees and visit the Wildlife Habitat to learn more about native Australian animal species such as kangaroos, wallabies, and crocodiles.

Islands of the Great Barrier Reef

Experiencing the Great Barrier Reef isn’t just about seeing colorful coral and schools of fish. You’ll also find tiny isles and islands located along the reef, many of them with dreamy white sand beaches. The Whitsunday Islands are especially popular, particularly the swirling sands of Whitehaven Beach.

On a Great Barrier Reef cruise, you’ll experience some of the world’s most spectacular snorkeling. Slide into the crystal-blue waters to swim alongside fish in shades of shimmering green and electric blue. You'll find colorful coral gardens and plenty of opportunities to see marine life such as stingrays and sea turtles in their natural habitat in one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth.

Great Barrier Reef Vacation Ideas Fit For Thrill-seekers

Australian vacation: voyage to the best places to visit.

Planning An Adventurous Australian Vacation

W hen you think of Australia, your imagination probably conjures up images of endless sandy beaches, Chris Hemsworth look-a-like surfers and cosmopolitan Sydney Harbor . I'm here to confirm that yes, this is all true about Australia. If you think a vacation is only complete with adrenaline-pumping activities, Australia is the ultimate destination for you. Thrilling water-based experiences abound from coast to coast, whether you want to swim with sharks, leap out of a plane onto a palm-fringed beach or surf record-breaking waves. If you want to savor several water sports in one destination, it's time to plan a Great Barrier Reef vacation .

Willis Island, Australia Sea Turtle

However, it's essential you know just how vast the Great Barrier Reef is, as it stretches over 1,800 miles along the Queensland coastline from Cape York to Bundaberg. To put it into perspective, it's greater in size than the United Kingdom , Netherlands and Switzerland combined. The only living structure visible from space, it's home to nearly 3,000 coral reefs, 600 islands and over 1,500 fish species. Therefore, there are a few different destinations to choose from, each offering a treasure trove of wild experiences.

When planning the perfect Australian vacation , another thing you need to know is when to visit. The best time of year to explore the Great Barrier Reef is from May to October. This is the dry season in Northern Australia, and the minimal rainfall leads to improved water visibility and better diving conditions. But when you're out of the water, you can still expect temperatures to hover around a perfect 70 degrees. Meanwhile, the wet season can include heavy monsoonal rain and stingers lurking in the ocean, so stinger suits are strongly recommended and available from retail stores across Queensland.

The City Of Cairns Is The Heart Of The Great Barrier Reef

Clown fish hiding in an anemone. Australia

The most popular base for millions of reef visitors is Cairns , but for good reason. Firstly, Cairns and its neighbor, Port Douglas , are home to the closest reef access from the mainland. In fact, you can be snorkeling on the reef just 30 minutes off the shoreline.

Channel your inner Nemo as you snorkel beside vibrant tropical fish, coral and marine life like sea turtles on the Great Barrier Reef. There are plenty of organized tours to the reef operating from Cairns and Port Douglas daily. Local tour operators have their own pontoons anchored on different sections of the reef, so you can snorkel and dive until your heart's content. There are also daily trips to Fitzroy Island or Green Island.

Tropical Australian beach. Fitzroy Island, Australia

Green Island is a 6,000-year-old coral cay, where you can step off the sandy shore and immediately start snorkeling on the reef. Other activities on Green Island include scuba diving, glass-bottomed boat tours and kayaking. You can expect the same experience on Fitzroy Island, with kayaks and stand-up paddleboards for rent and coral reef just off the shoreline.

For an unforgettable adventure, you can take a helicopter flight or chartered boat to the private island of Vlasoff Cay for a castaway picnic that includes a bottle of champagne. Vlasoff Cay is a mere speck of sparkling sand surrounded by clear azure water. Don't forget your snorkel!

But Cairns also wins points for its selection of dynamic water sports. Keep the adventure going and parasail, go whitewater rafting down the Tully River, skydive onto palm-fringed Mission Beach or get your heart pumping on a crocodile-spotting jet-ski tour.

Be Blown Away By The Beaches In The Whitsundays

Aerial view of heart reef on a Great Barrier vacation. Australia

Then there's the whimsical Whitsundays, which consist of 74 islands sitting on or close to the Great Barrier Reef. It's the only section of the Great Barrier Reef that hasn't yet been impacted by severe coral bleaching. Your first stop should always be Whitehaven Beach, one of the world's most beautiful beaches. Its snow-like sand is juxtaposed beautifully against the vibrant turquoise ocean. While you can take a boat to the beach, there's always the option to go that extra step and fly to Whitehaven Beach.

Speaking of flying, one of the most popular things to do in the Whitsundays is to take a scenic plane or helicopter flight to see Heart Reef. This is the only way to see the heart-shaped reef, an iconic symbol of the Great Barrier Reef — skydive over the reef for an even closer look!

Next, there are plenty of sailing and snorkeling tours to enjoy from Airlie Beach . If a day tour isn't enough, there are two and three-day sailing experiences available. You can also stay overnight on the Reefworld pontoon with Reefsleep. Explore Hardy Reef by day and then literally sleep under the twinkling stars at night. For those that need their creature comforts, there are also Reefsuites available below deck with incredible floor-to-ceiling underwater views. Visiting the pontoon on a day trip is another worthwhile option. However, it's important to note that because the water in the Whitsundays is cooler than Cairns, you won't see as many brilliantly colored fish. But, don't be surprised if you find yourself in the presence of a friendly sea turtle instead.

Dive Deep Exploring The Great Barrier Reef

Pink soft coral on a shipwreck. Australia.

One of the ultimate water sports to enjoy on the Great Barrier Reef is scuba diving. While there are diving opportunities available from both Cairns and in the Whitsundays, there are tons of other exciting options.

First, there's the legendary North Horn dive site on the isolated Osprey Reef. Located at the reef's northernmost tip, it's characterized by a sloping coral shelf with depths from 12 meters to 1 kilometer (0.6 miles). But its claim to fame is the fact that it's been home to shark feeds for decades, so sharks are very accustomed to divers. While gray and whitetip reef sharks are the most popular, divers might also find themselves swimming alongside silvertip sharks, hammerheads, tiger sharks, manta rays and potato cod. It's an adventure to get there, but it's undeniably a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Then there's the Cod Hole, with its giant potato cod near luxurious and remote Lizard Island. Here, you'll find 24 secluded beaches and coral reefs just offshore. Another option is the SS Yongala shipwreck dive, which is easily accessible from Townsville or Magnetic Island. The ship sunk in 1911 and claimed 121 lives, but now it lives on in spectacular fashion and is home to hundreds of different fish, ray, turtle and coral species.

Aerial view of Lady Elliot Island. Australia

Sir David Attenborough named Heron Island in the Whitsundays and Lady Elliot Island as two of his favorite dive sites. Heron Island is just a short boat ride away from multiple dive sites, and guests of the all-inclusive resort can also snorkel right off the beach. Meanwhile, Lady Elliot Island is sitting pretty in a Green Zone (the highest protection zone), which translates to unparalleled diving and snorkeling. You can expect to see turtles, manta rays, dolphins, sharks and whales in its surrounding waters throughout the year.

One of the best ways to experience diving on the Great Barrier Reef is with a live-aboard experience. Tours range from overnight to over a week and this means you "live aboard" the boat by night but spend your day diving different reefs. It doesn't get more thrilling than that!

For More Thrills, Continue Down The Coast

Wave in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast. Australia

It's evident that Australia's East Coast is filled with wild wonders. But if you're on the hunt for more exciting water-based adventures following your Great Barrier Reef vacation, you'll find them in Queensland.

The Sunshine Coast in Southern Queensland is home to some of Australia's best surfing beaches. Noosa Heads is most renowned in the area as the best surfing spot , with breaks suitable for beginners to pro surfers. Noosa is also known for its supreme kite surfing conditions if that's more your style. Another drawcard is the Noosa Everglades. With a 37-mile-long river and lake system leading to the Pacific Ocean, it's the perfect spot for stand-up paddleboarding.

Meanwhile, in Mooloolaba, you can live out your dreams with Sunreef Hire, which offers the region's largest and fastest ocean jet-skiing experience. This means you have over 1 square mile parallel to Mooloolaba Beach to go as slow as a snail or as fast as Usain Bolt. Alternatively, embark on a 90-minute jet-ski tour that takes you on a 37-mile journey through mangrove-lined channels to Moreton Bay Marine Park. Keep your eyes peeled for sea turtles, dugongs and dolphins, and try not to get distracted by the breathtaking views from the Glass House Mountains.

Your next stop should be the glamorous Gold Coast. The beaches here host international surfing competitions, so surfers can't look past the breaks at Snapper Rocks and Burleigh Heads. If you prefer a more relaxing excursion, try stand-up paddleboarding along Tallebudgera Creek. The creek leads out to the ocean, but its sandbars mean the waters remain calm and perfect for stand-up paddleboarding year-round.

Alternatively, reach new heights with flyboarding. Fearless risk-takers need only apply for this adventure, as it involves attaching a device to your feet that creates water pressure to propel you into the sky. Another way to get the adrenaline pumping on the Gold Coast is on a jet boat ride. Get set for speeds of up to 50 mph and 360-degree spins. No other rush compares.

Aerial view of Tangalooma shipwrecks off Moreton island, Queensland. Australia

More Australian Oceanic Adventures

Beyond Queensland, Australia is brimming with wild escapades to add to your bucket list. Firstly, New South Wales cities like Newcastle and Sydney are known for their historic ocean pools. There's nothing quite like watching and feeling the waves break as you contently swim laps. Another activity is kayaking around magical Sydney Harbor.

Across the country in Western Australia is the 186-mile-long Ningaloo Reef. It's one of the few places in the world where you can swim among whale sharks, the 40-foot-long gentle giants of the sea. Tours depart from Exmouth daily between March and August. But outside of peak season, you can still admire the beautiful reef and have the chance to mingle with four turtle species, six toothed whale species and eight types of baleen whales.

Whether you see the Great Barrier Reef from the sea, sky or a sailboat, you're guaranteed to have an unforgettable Australian vacation . Plus, you don't have to travel far to find more exhilarating ventures on the water. No matter where you go in wonderful Australia, you'll never be bored.

Not only is the Great Barrier Reef a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s also one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World! As one of the largest living structures on Earth (even visible from space!), it consists of over 600 types of both hard and soft coral.

Depending on weather and water conditions, you’ll head to either Agincourt or Opal Reef to snorkel at 3 fantastic sites, with the option to do an intro dive, as well! This is perfect if you’ve never gone scuba diving before, and would like to try under the supervision of professional divers.

The cool thing is that this tour is really ideal for any experience level, as they customize the dive site visits and type of diving/snorkeling based on your specific skills.

Expand To See More See Less

After we had time to snorkel around at our first stop and explore the beautiful underwater world, we had morning tea and set off to the second one. We then had a delicious lunch onboard, which was nice and varied – suiting everyone’s tastes.

We then had a break to digest and enjoy an interpretive talk about the Great Barrier Reef, which made me appreciate the natural wonder even more!

We then went to the third site for an optional snorkel tour, where we saw many big and bright, colorful fish! All in all, it was a wonderful experience that gave me a whole new perspective on sealife and the reef – oh, and I learned how to actually snorkel properly!

More Information & Tour Booking

100% refund for cancellations within 24 hours of tour experience, 2. passions of paradise great barrier reef cruise by catamaran.

  • Duration:  9 hours
  • Departure: 1 Spence St, Cairns City QLD 4870
  • Departure Time: 7:00 AM
  • Includes:  A stylish fast modern catamaran visiting 2 exclusive outer reef locations, coffee and/or tea, lunch, snacks, complimentary snorkel tour and tuition, use of Snorkeling equipment, marine naturalist presentation, all marine park fees and levies, winter wet suits or summer sun suits

If you’re looking for one of the most magical and convenient ways to see the wonder that is the Great Barrier Reef, this is one of the best ways to go!

The Passions of Paradise Great Barrier Reef Cruise by Catamaran  tour is educational, with a fantastic crew that will make sure you’re safe and having a great time. This is a tour I’d recommend to even my dearest friends and family, so put it toward the top of your list if it’s your first time out here.

We started out by meeting with our crew at the Reef Fleet Terminal, where we did a quick check-in and received a briefing about what to expect. I immediately knew I’d made a good decision, with their incredible customer service and clear knowledge of the area.

I don’t know about you, but I’m a huge fan of entertaining crews, and that’s exactly what you’ll get here. We then boarded the luxury catamaran, which was one of the most beautiful, sleek, and spacious of any I’d been on.

The crew has access to nearly 30 different destinations on the outer Great Barrier Reef, and they will select the best 2 of those, depending on weather and water conditions that day. We were also able to select if we wanted to snorkel or dive, depending on our preferences and experience level.

No matter which one you choose, you’ll receive full instruction by professional guides, who made sure we all felt safe and were well watched after in the water. We saw such a wonderful spectrum of tropical fish, turtles, and of course, corals!

Pair all that with morning and afternoon tea, a delicious buffet lunch, and many beverages available for purchase, you have everything you could want, and more!

3. 2-Day Great Barrier Reef: Reefsleep Experience

  • Duration:  2 days
  • Departure:  Hotel pickup and drop-off available
  • Departure Time: 7:30 AM
  • Includes:  Dinner, breakfast, overnight accommodation in a Reefbed, round-trip cruise, semi-submersible coral viewing with reef appreciation talk, underwater viewing chamber, use of snorkeling equipment, lunch (2)

This is hands-down the most immersive, comprehensive way to see the Great Barrier Reef. Imagine spending your days snorkeling among breathtaking marine life and the legendary coral, filling up on delicious meals, and waking up to incomparable ocean views.

You’ll get all that and more, with the 2-Day Great Barrier Reef: Reefsleep Experience tour .  Rather than have to head to a meetup point like the previous tours have required, this tour includes a convenient hotel pickup so you don’t have to lug your bags around.

The crew was amazing from the very get-go, making all of us feel welcome, setting the tone for a fantastic experience. We got to choose whether we took our high-speed catamaran to either the Port of Airlie or Hamilton Island (I personally prefer Hamilton as it tends to have less tourists).

One of the highlights for me was transferring to a cool pontoon that came with an interactive underwater viewing chamber, so we could see all kinds of sealife without getting wet!

It even comes with a semi-submersible and a big sun deck that I thoroughly enjoyed soaking up the rays on while sipping on a cool beverage.

I had a fantastic time trying my hand at scuba diving, and felt comfortable and confident thanks to our experienced guides who showed me not only how to put on all the gear, but how to actually dive correctly.

When it was finally time for bed, we stayed in a swag, which is essentially a tent complete with a comfy mattress and bedding that zips up. With one breakfast, 2 lunches, and one dinner included (along with all the tea and coffee I could down),

I felt like literally everything was taken care of. We spent our evenings eating well, enjoying laughing and storytelling with the crew, and these 2 days flew by way too fast!

4. Seastar Luxury Outer Great Barrier Reef Island and Reef Tour

  • Duration: 7.5 hours
  • Departure: Marlin Parade, Cairns City QLD 4870
  • Includes:  Luxury Outer Great Barrier Reef, cruise morning & afternoon tea, lunch, mask, snorkel and fins, wet-suit or stinger-suit (seasonal), buoyancy vest and noodle, island access to famous Michaelmas Cay, guided snorkel Tour at Michaelmas Cay and Hastings Reef

I know that committing to a couple of days out on the Great Barrier Reef is not something that everyone is able to do. However, you can still get the full reef experience in just one day with the Seastar Luxury Outer Great Barrier Reef Island and Reef Tour .

This all-inclusive cruise has all you could ever want from a tour of this kind, and is the perfect outdoor activity if you’re only going to be in Cairns for a short amount of time.

Starting off early in the morning, we headed to the Cairns Marlin Marine, where we met up with the crew and boarded the beautiful Seastar. The crew was super friendly and knowledgeable, asking us about anything in particular we were interested in to try and tailor the day to us.

We were then served some tasty morning tea and set off toward Michaelmas Cay, known for its unique species of seabirds, giant clams, and more.

Not only that, but it’s known for being the biggest uninhabited coral cay in the area, by a long shot. As we arrived so early, we were actually the first vessel to arrive at the Cay, which already has very limited access due to the environment being so vulnerable to damage.

We got to choose if we wanted to go snorkeling or scuba diving, though no matter which one you select you can count on experienced guides to instruct you carefully.

We then stopped at Hastings Reef, which is part of the outer Great Barrier and is a typical outer reef with a shallow top and steep sides that look like cliffs! This one was actually pretty intimidating to me for some reason, though still absolutely fascinating to see and learn about!

After that, we headed back on board the luxury catamaran for a tasty lunch and drinks, making for the perfect day out on the water!

5. Sunlover Reef Cruises Cairns Great Barrier Reef Experience

  • Departure: Reef Fleet Terminal (Bottom floor, 1 Spence St, Cairns City QLD 4870
  • Departure Time: 10:00 AM
  • Includes:  Snorkeling equipment, Glass bottom boat tour, Sunlover waterslide and spacious sun deck, Great Barrier Reef and fish feeding presentations by our marine experts, Underwater observatory and ocean enclosed pool, Lunch Coffee and/or Tea, WiFi on board, fresh water showers and change rooms, Environmental Management Charge (EMC)

If you’re in Cairns, please do yourself a favor and take a trip out to see the Great Barrier Reef! This natural world wonder is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whose beauty and promise of adventure call travelers from all over the world!

The  Sunlover Reef Cruises Cairns Great Barrier Reef Experience  will take you on a sleek and modern vessel across the Coral Sea, with professional guides to lead the way to the underwater wonderland.

Our tour started out by heading to the Reef Fleet Terminal around 10:00 am, which allowed us to sleep in more than we were able to with the other tours! After going through a briefing with the crew, we hopped on our air-conditioned catamaran and headed out to the reef.

If you’re on the hunt for a tour of the Great Barrier Reef that’s perfect for children or entire families, this one takes the top spot, for me.

I know that it can be a bit stressful thinking about kids snorkeling or diving around something as large as the Great Barrier Reef, but I’d recommend this tour to anyone with younger ones.

The guides do a phenomenal job at keeping everyone safe, with precise instructions, patience, and expert knowledge that will give anyone the confidence to venture underwater.

Expect to see plenty of neon fish, colorful coral, and other wonders under the sea.

With free inclusions like a glass bottom boat tour, a kid’s enclosed ocean pool, underwater observatory, fish-feeding presentation, and the only theme park waterslide on the reef, there’s no shortage of fun activities to participate in!

I enjoyed the pontoon that came complete with a large sundeck, and the buffet lunch was delicious, and filling. You can even choose to add on other activities like diving, Seawalker Helmet Dive, Guided Snorkel Safari, or even a breathtaking helicopter tour!

6. Wavedancer Low Isles Great Barrier Reef Sailing Cruise

  • Duration:  7 hours
  • Includes:  Cruise from Port Douglas to Low Isles, Use of Snorkeling equipment, Guided snorkel tour with marine biologist, Glass bottom boat coral viewing, Guided beach walk with marine biologist, Lunch, Use of lycra suit, Morning tea/coffee on boarding, afternoon tea, Environmental Management Charge, Complimentary glass of sparkling wine on homeward journey

Next up is the Wavedancer Low Isles Great Barrier Reef Sailing Cruise tour , which is another great option for entire families with kids. If you’ve never seen the Great Barrier Reef before and would really like to experience it to its fullest in one, well-organized tour, don’t pass this up.

You’ll get to learn from the best of the best, including participating in a marine biologist-led snorkel tour!

We met up with our guides at Port Douglas, which was very easy to get to and didn’t really call for a hotel pickup. We also started the tour at 10:00 am, which was definitely preferable as we had kids in our party that would definitely not have been emotionally ready any earlier than that.

Our luxury, 98-foot catamaran was nice enough that I probably would’ve been happy just hanging out onboard the comfy, air-conditioned cabins!

The highlight for me was the onboard presentation by the marine biologist about the unique landscape of the Coral Sea and the Great Barrier Reef: the largest collection of coral reefs in the world!

We arrived at Low Isles, where we were given all necessary snorkeling gear, heading onto the soft sand to explore the countless sea critters under the surface of the cool waters!

\If you don’t want to get wet, you can check out the dry cabin of a glass-bottom boat, or simply stroll along the white sand beaches (or the tropical forest guided nature walk!).

No matter which activity you choose, you’re sure to have worked up an appetite, so refuel with a tropical lunch buffet! There are unlimited soft drinks available, as well as a fully licensed bar if you’d like to purchase some tasty cocktails.

This was one of the most exciting tours I’ve ever taken in my life, so if you’re someone who gets bored easily, grab your tickets now!

7. Full-Day Cruise Tour to Frankland Islands Great Barrier Reef

  • Departure Time: 8:00 AM
  • Includes:  Use of Snorkeling Equipment, Kayaks and Stand Up Paddleboards, Guided Snorkelling Tour and/or Adventure Snorkel tour, Morning, afternoon tea and Tropical buffet lunch, Protection suits (seasonal)

Located right off the coast of Cairns sits one of my favorite places in Australia: the Frankland Islands. Full of breathtaking natural beauty, adventure, and opportunities to see rare native wildlife, you won’t regret taking the Full-Day Cruise Tour to Frankland Islands Great Barrier Reef tour !

I loved this tour for how private and exclusive it felt, free of crowds, which isn’t always the case on these kinds of high-demand experiences!

Something that I really loved about this tour was that it started off with an early-morning hotel pickup, so we didn’t have to worry about calling a taxi or figuring out our way to a meet-up point.

Our guide was very outgoing and warm, answering any questions we had, and offering an educational commentary as we cruised along. We then got to our luxury boat, and as we got settled, cruised down the Mulgrave River, which was absolutely beautiful.

After that, there was a brief open water crossing, which lead us to our tropical island spot where we spent the next 4 to 5 hours.

This is a very secluded part of the reef, where just dozens of people are able to visit per day! It felt like we had the reef practically to ourselves, where we were able to choose if we wanted to hang out on the beach, or go snorkeling.

I chose to go snorkeling, and there was an expert marine biologist who gave us an amazing guide to the various corals and fish, breaking down how this complex ecosystem operates.

Afterward, we enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch right in the middle of this island paradise, along with endless coffee and tea. This was such a fun time and gave me a whole new appreciation for the reef and its inhabitants!

Snorkelling On The Great Barrier Reef

Snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef

Snorkelling gear is included with all of our Reef Tours. Snorkeling is the best and easiest way to see the reef because 90% of its diversity occurs within 4 metres of the surface.

It doesn't take long to get the hang of it and for beginners a crew member is usually on hand to offer tuition on gear use and snorkel techniques.

Snorkelling offers all swimmers, regardless of their skill level, the opportunity to see this diverse eco-system of the Great Barrier Reef up close.

A selection of buoyancy aids (foam noodles, life jackets and wetsuits) allows you to float effortlessly over rich, colourful coral gardens, and snorkel guides are usually available to guide you through the natural maze of beautiful coral and fish and point out all the 'cool stuff'.

Intro Dives Introductory diving, also resort diving are dives where people without diver training or certification can experience scuba diving under the guidance of a diving instructor. Intro dives are offered on most reef tour from cairns and available anyone over 12 years. The dive usually has a duration of 20 minutes.

Participants are briefed on the way out to the reef site to ensure both an exciting and safe first dive.

Certified Dives Divers will love the dramatic drop offs, swim throughs and bommies. Buddy up with a dive partner, or tag along with a dive guide for a grand tour of all the best spots on the reef.

Great Barrier Reef Pontoons

Great Adventures Reef Pontoon

There are 5 Reef Pontoons accessible from Cairns. Pontoons give you space and are suitable for all ages and especially ideal for families.

A pontoon is a spacious floating reef platform located at the outer barrier reef.

Pontoons Generally Feature, sundecks and undercover areas for relaxing and lunch, change rooms and snorkel access platforms. Glass Bottom Boat & Semi-Sub Tour departure points.

Some pontoons have built in under water observatories and special children's enclosed swimming areas. The Sunlover Moore Reef pontoon has a waterslide.

Pontoon Reef Tours offer a range of activities for swimmers and non-swimmers it means that everyone can experience the very best of the Great Barrier Reef.

Glass Bottom Boat Tours

Glass Bottom Boat on the Great Barrier Reef

Explore the wonders of the reef from the comfort of a glass bottom boat tour.

Hovering over beautiful coral gardens, giant clams and schools of colourful reef fish, a glass bottom boat is ideal for kids, non-swimmers and for those who are wanting to learn more about the reef.

Tours usually last around 30 minutes with a running commentary by a marine biologist. Most pontoon and island experiences include the option of taking a glass bottom boat tour.

Semi-submarine Tours

Semi Sub on the Great Barrier Reef

A semi-submersible coral viewing tour treats passengers to a divers view of the coral reef and marine life.

Sitting 1m below the water level, passengers can enjoy gliding through coral gardens and along the edge of coral drop bommies spotting a huge array of colourful reef fish.

With large viewing windows and air conditioning, these semi-submersible tours provide a divers perspective of the reef in comfort and without getting wet!

Tours are usually take around 30 minutes and are fully guided by an on-board marine biologist.

Wheely Friendly Reef Tours

Wheelchair access to the Great Barrie Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is wheely friendly from Cairns. Here are a few experiences that offer wheelchair access.

Reef Magic There is ramp access from the wharf to the vessel and vessel to the Marine World platform. However, passengers are required to negotiate at least one set of stairs on the vessel depending on tides and loading position so assistance may be required. The Reef Magic II catamaran has wide isles and a wheelchair accessible toilet & shower. Access to the water, coral viewing vessels, underwater observatory and sundeck all require stairs to be negotiated and would require a carer to be present if unable to walk unassisted.

Great Adventures Outer Reef Great Adventures vessel "Reef King" does have a motorised chair lift to enable transfer between the upper and lower decks, however it is recommended that passengers have some mobility or assistance to transfer from their wheelchair. Toilets on the vessel and outer reef are not wheelchair accessible. There are ramp facilities from the vessel to the floating platform. There are no disabled facilities on the platform and the platform does have decking where wheelchair wheels may get stuck. Access to the underwater observatory, swim platforms and semi-submersible is by stairs only.

Quicksilver Cruises Quicksilver VIII is the most suitable vessel for wheelchair passengers, however there are occasions when this vessel may not operate which is often not known till 24 hours prior to departure, so it is recommended to reconfirm your booking prior to travel. On Quicksilver VIII there is an oversized toilet cubicle suitable for most wheelchair passengers. Quicksilver V also has a wheelchair accessible toilet. At the platform a chair lift enables disabled passengers to be lowered into the water to enjoy snorkelling. There are ramp facilities from the vessel to the floating platform, however access to the underwater observatory, swim platforms and semi-submersible coral viewing vessel is by stairs only.

Sunlover Cruises Sunlover Cruises is very well set-up to accommodate wheelchairs. They have multiple entrance points onto the vessel, as well as a dedicated wheelchair table on the main deck, wheel chair ramps to get over door jams and very experienced and willing crew. In some circumstances, they may be able to offer glass bottom boat rides and even SCUBA Diving! but cannot guarantee this every time.

Choosing A Good Day To Visit The Reef

The Great Barrier Reef

Visiting the Great Barrier Reef is an unforgettable experience, and the weather plays a significant role visibility and comfort on your tour. Here are some things to factor in when choosing a day for your tour to the Reef.

Wind Speed: This is the main factor which will influence visibility. Low wind speeds are preferable, ideally less than 15 knots / 27km. Lower wind speeds result in calmer sea conditions, which means better visibility underwater and a more pleasant boat ride to and from the reef. Calm, sunny days following a period without heavy rain being ideal.

Sunshine: Sunny days enhance the colors of the coral and marine life, making your experience more vibrant. However, it's important to protect yourself against sunburn and dehydration, so be sure to apply waterproof sunscreen and drink plenty of water.

Season: The best time to visit the Great Barrier Reef is during the Australian winter and spring, from June to October. This period avoids the wet season (December to March), which can bring heavy rains and lower visibility due to run-off from the land.

Tides: Low tide can be the best time for snorkeling in shallow reef areas, as the coral and marine life are closer to the surface. However, some areas are best at high tide to avoid strong currents and to ensure there's enough water depth for comfortable snorkeling or diving.

Really enjoyed my day, it was relaxing and fun. The next time I want a day trip to unwind, would definitely consider another visit to Green Island. Thanks

Kerry Irving

Great day snorkelling, excellent facilities and amazing customer service!
Very good experience. The crew are very knowledgable and helpful and knew what they were doing. They also cooked the food which was delicious! I had a lot of fun. I did the snorkelling and saw a lot of fish, turtles and more. I felt very safe snorkelling as they kept an eye on us. It was a small group, which I really liked. I would definitely recommend this trip!
We just returned from an overnight trip and would turnaround and do it again! We loved everything!!! We are a group of four beginner divers (two adults and two teenagers) and we could not have had a better experience - the captain and dive instructor were knowledgeable, helpful and great company! Thanks Roman and Teddy!! The equipment is really well looked after and the boat is comfortable. We saw truly amazing things, learned something that we hadn?t tried before and even managed a night dive. Indescribably good. Do yourself a favour - explore the reef with these guys. It was amazing.

Samantha Anderson

Friendly, professional staff. Highly recommend a cocktail on the upper deck at the end of the trip. Delicious!

Craig Findlay

We scored a great day with only 7 on board, a whole day with the island pretty much to ourselves to explore and the ride over was great, the crew were very informative and welcoming, a well stocked bar if needed and an all round great experience. Will definitely go again
Thanks Jodi you made our trip easy and we had an amazing time

nice day out, friendly staff. Island has nice walks and beaches, even hot showers. Only minus; fly season.
It was great for my family. My children (7 and 10) had a great time. The staff were all friendly and taught them how to snorkel. They can swim but are a bit scared. Eventually they were snorkelling and swimming freely. Also the meals were all delicious! Thank you so much!(Arigatou!)

Garry Sanders

Totally enjoyed the whole experience. The crew were excellent (plus). Lunch was good. Trip across and back was good.

Jonathan Chapman

The whole experience provided on board the Evolution was second to none. We have waited a long time for this experience and it didn't disappoint us. The crew did you proud and the service they provided was excellent and the food was so tasty and plenty of it.

Very enjoyable day
The whole family had a fantastic trip to Dunk Island, would definitely recommend for families with young children not old enough to enjoy a day on the reef. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Overall a good experience and value for money. Definitely want to go back again as not enough time to explore in one day.

Andrew Arnett

Had a grate day out captain and crew are amazing. We will see you all again

Janie Beckhouse

We were well looked after on the ferry to Dunk Island and it is well worth spending the money to go to spend time on the island and enjoy the beautiful rain forrest and beaches. There is a great pop-up Mexican cafe on the island, too (Fri, Sat & Sun). The staff on the ferry were informative and friendly.
Friendly staff, well-equipped vessel.
Great way to see Cairns. Highly reccomended Thanks Chris.

The Great Barrier Reef, a jewel off the coast of Cairns, Australia, is not only famous for its vibrant coral and teeming marine life but also as a stage for one of nature's most magnificent performances: the annual whale migration. This spectacle draws nature enthusiasts and wildlife watchers from around the globe, eager to witness these gentle giants.

The whale watching season along the Great Barrier Reef is primarily between June and September. This period marks the migration of several whale species, including the awe-inspiring humpback and the elusive minke whales, as they travel to the warmer waters off the coast of Queensland to breed and give birth before heading back to the Antarctic.

Humpback Whales Humpback whales, known for their impressive acrobatics and haunting songs, are the main attraction. They start to make their appearance in the waters off Cairns around June, with sightings peaking through July and August. These months are ideal for witnessing these majestic creatures as they breach, tail slap, and nurse their young, offering a spectacular show to those fortunate enough to be in their presence.

Dwarf Minke Whales The Great Barrier Reef is also one of the few places in the world where you can swim with dwarf minke whales, an experience offered during a limited window from June to July. These curious and playful creatures often approach swimmers, providing an unforgettable and intimate wildlife interaction.

Whale Watching Experiences from Cairns For the best whale watching experience, consider booking a tour that specifically targets whale sightings. Many operators from Cairns offer day trips to the Outer Reef, where the chances of encountering whales are higher. These tours not only provide the opportunity to see whales but also to explore the stunning underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef.

Fitzroy Island Adventures provides a unique opportunity for whale watching tours from Cairns and Fitzroy Island during the season. Additionally, other reef service providers may also offer special whale watching tours, typically announcing these exclusive experiences before the season starts each year.

Witnessing the migration of whales on the Great Barrier Reef is a once-in-a-lifetime experience thatis available in Cairns between June and September.

10 Environmental Management Charge (EMC) Explained

When you book a day tour to the Great Barrier Reef, you may notice an additional fee called the environmental management charge (EMC). This fee is a part of most commercial activities, including tours, that operate within the Great Barrier Reef

When you book a day tour to the Great Barrier Reef, you may notice an additional fee called the environmental management charge (EMC). This fee is a part of most commercial activities, including tours, that operate within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park under a permit issued by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

When you participate in a tourist activity on the Great Barrier Reef, you are usually responsible for paying this charge to the tour operator. The tour operator then forwards the fee to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

Why do you have to pay the fee?

The environmental management charge plays a crucial role in the day-to-day management and long-term resilience of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The funds collected through this charge are directly used for the management and conservation efforts of the marine park.

Additionally, when you provide visitation information along with the environmental management charge, it greatly helps the Reef Authority and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) in developing sustainable management plans for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

By paying the environmental management charge, you are contributing to the protection and preservation of this magnificent natural wonder, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy its beauty.

The whale shark, estimated to be 4 - 5 metres in length swam up close and alongside the semi-sub window as excited passengers looked on in awe.

More often associated with the northern waters of Western Australia, whale shark encounters on the Great Barrier Reef are quite rare.

“We wouldn’t normally expect to see them here at this time of year. As plankton feeders you would expect likelier sightings around seasonal plankton blooms and coral spawning.”

As the largest fish in the sea reaching lengths of over 12 metres, whale sharks are docile fish feeding mostly on plankton, crab larvae and jellyfish, which they scoop up with their colossal gaping mouths while swimming close to the water’s surface. They are listed as a vulnerable species and prior to the mid 1980s there were less than 350 confirmed reports of whale sharks world-wide.

Throughout the day, the “beach buggy” transfers guests between Ocean Spirit and the beach. To protect this special bird sanctuary, access on the cay is limited to the roped beach area. Optional activites include introductory scuba diving and marine biologist guided snorkel tours to learn much more about the reef and the creatures that inhabit it.

What our Guests Say

This was such an amazing trip on the great barrier reef for us as a family. Both my 4 and 10 year old boys absolutely loved it 😍We will never forget this experience and hope other families out there will get to one day be as lucky as we were and get to snorkel in the great barrier reef for the day.

Mia Hoff – Google Business Review

The whole experience was great. We were lucky with the weather, which helped. The facilities all dealt with the number of customers well so there was plenty of room on the catamaran there and back as well as virtually no waiting for the glass bottom boat and mini sub. The reef views were quite spectacular. Overall the trip was excellent and good value.

Frank R – Tripadvisor

My husband and I had an awesome time on the Sunlover Reef Cruise. Staff were super helpful and the activities and equipment that we were provided with exceeded our expectations. We got to spend such a decent amount of time out snorkeling on the reef and had lots of freedom and choice to enjoy our day how we wanted too. Was great fun!

What It's Like to Cruise Through One of Australia's Most Remote Regions — With Deadly Crocs and Ancient Landscapes

The Kimberley in Western Australia is now an expedition hotspot, with luxury ships taking intrepid guests deep into one of the world’s last great wildernesses.

Matt Dutile

Pinch me: I’m sailing through a prehistoric paradise of towering sandstone cliffs in rich hues from orange to burgundy, an aqua ocean, and beckoning white-sand beaches, and it simply doesn't feel real. A setting this spectacular typically teems with tourists and posh resorts, yet we zoom along in Zodiacs for miles and see nary a soul or animal. Life here is primarily invisible — lurking underwater, hidden in trees, camouflaged on ancient rocks. Some of it is dangerous, even lethal.

Welcome to northwestern Australia’s Kimberley, a region about the size of Sweden and one so remote that even most Aussies never visit. It’s one of the world’s last great wildernesses, with a sparse population, of which nearly half is Aboriginal. Here I am, a wuss who naturally leans to catastrophic thoughts, on an expedition outing for the 264-passenger Seabourn Pursuit during its June 2024 inaugural sailing. With the Kimberley now an expedition hotspot, I had to get on board this 10-day Broome-to-Darwin voyage, even though I was hesitantly onboard.

On our first outing, idling in a Zodiac near the mothership, we get a lecture on the ferocious saltwater crocodiles, which may swim beneath and around our rubber boats. Greg Fitzgerald, one of 24 expedition team members and our guide for the day, sounds almost gleeful as he rapid-fires off lots of croc info: Salties are stealth predators, making no wake or bubbles in the water. You will not see them approach. They can sense a Zodiac a kilometer away. They swim fast and even run fast, in case you’re wondering about going ashore. They will eat us. They even eat each other.

“Saltwater crocodiles are the oldest reptiles on earth, the apex of predators. They can reach 19 feet long and weigh 1,000 pounds or more," he explains in a broad Aussie accent. " Never put your hands or legs in the water. Do not stand up unless I OK it," Fitzgerald adds, as if I was considering it.

“Can a croc jump onto a Zodiac or bump it from underneath?” I ask, my voice quivering. “I’ll never say never, but I’ve never heard of it,” shrugs Fitzgerald.  With those words of comfort, we are off full throttle, all leaning a bit forward in our Zodiac as instructed, me probably the most. Although we’re wearing lifejackets, I’d rather fall into the boat than out.

We see no crocodiles this day, but we learn so much about this primordial region that I can barely absorb it all. Take the underwater mangrove forests lining our ocean route. Fitzgerald points out their yellow leaves floating in the water. “They’re sacrificial leaves,” he says with reverence. “For the mangroves to survive in saltwater, these leaves give their lives, secreting all the salt to keep the trees alive.”

The sandstone cliffs bordering our waterways are a whopping 350 million years old and topped by flat plateaus dotted with acacia trees. Their layered, compressed, and craggy shapes, weathered by sun, water, and time, evoke faces and sandwiches — one is accurately nicknamed ‘lasagna.’ I must snap 1,000 pictures, as no two are alike.

It's hot here, even though it’s winter, the only time expedition ships visit, as the rainy summer brings typhoons and unbearable heat. The temperature feels warmer than the reported high 80s, and the sun pounds through my protective hat and clothing. “Drink a liter of water an hour,” advises Fitzgerald. He’s right. If we don’t, dehydration and fatigue sets in. Seabourn Pursuit grows quiet when cruisers are not exploring — naps are definitely a thing.

Yet, despite the clime, I am mesmerized. Each day is a jaw-dropper. Imagine the extreme contrast of cruising on an ultra-luxury expedition ship, where all accommodations are sumptuous suites with marble baths, and complimentary caviar and alcohol flows freely. Yet the second we climb into a Zodiac, we time-travel to ancient times marked by fossilized dinosaur footprints and often dangerous undetectable life. I admit, I keep expecting a T. Rex to appear on one of these clifftop plateaus, a next-gen Godzilla, or King Kong beating his chest.  It all looks like a movie set waiting for its dinosaur-driven cast.

As a rather Nervous Nelly, I find the expedition team — mostly unflappable Aussies eager for adventure and responsible for our safety every time we leave the ship — absolute heroes. They scout for crocs before and during our journeys ashore or snorkeling excursions, ensuring we all return safely to the boat, and I’m also impressed with how they guide the older passengers.

Our expedition team is downright gleeful here, as if crocs, venomous spiders, and poisonous snakes add to the allure. Fitzgerald kindly shares there’s a rare one-fanged snake here whose bite can kill you in 30 minutes.  I’m in awe of team member Sue Crafer, who also races yachts around the world.  Before we head to the Horizontal Falls, Crafer says, “Take in where you are. Feel the place.” She urges us to smell the iron from the sandstone and inhales deeply, her face awash with bliss.

We reach the Horizontal Falls in Talbot Bay — the only ones in the world — where extreme tides forcibly push water between narrow gorges, creating the illusion of gushing horizontal waterfalls. Crafer explains that water travels up to 10 knots, about our ship's speed, as she guides our Zodiac to the Falls’ edge. We skid and swirl a little like the Mad Tea Party ride at Disney World.  Then Crafer gets a radio call and grimly informs us about a situation with another Zodiac. She says aloud, “I hope no one is hurt.”  Our group's awe morphs to anxiety until we arrive at the boat with the “situation” and discover a smiling Seabourn crew greeting us with glasses of Champagne and passionfruit popsicles.

Next, we travel to Paspaley, a pearl farm in Kuri Bay, a special stop — Seabourn is one of just two cruise lines permitted to visit. We get a compressed course in how each South Sea pearl forms over a two-year process and even taste oyster pearl meat — delicious, like scallops — which our chef brings back on board for a sunset caviar bash.

One unforgettable morning, we rise at 5:30 a.m. for a Zodiac ride to Montgomery Reef, perhaps 1.8 billion years old. Sunrise lights the inky sky in blazing orange hues, making the early rise a thrill.  We zoom past green sea turtles, whose heads pop out of the water and then vanish. This coral reef is the world’s largest inshore reef, appearing and disappearing during the Kimberley’s giant tidal changes, which can vary a whopping 30 feet in one day. In low tide, the reef seems to rise from the ocean, and suddenly, lagoons, inlets, waterfalls, and mangroves materialize.  In high tide, the reef is swallowed by the sea once again.

We also gawk at cave art in two locations; they’re thousands of years old — some may be up to 65,000, as no one truly knows. At Freshwater Cove, indigenous Worrorra tribe members invite us to walk through a cleansing smoke ceremony and paint our cheeks with ochre.  This experience feels joyful and surreal, and I grin from ear to ear. Before we view the sacred art, a Worrorra guide says a prayer in his native tongue. We relish such delicate drawings - a cyclone resembling a spider web, a hand, a turtle, and a fish — and leave with more questions than answers, wondering who drew them and what their lives were like so long ago.

Finally, we see crocs on the Hunter River’s sandy shores. We cut our motor and drift close. One is estimated to be about 1,200 pounds, probably male. I see his eyes, so reptilian, so primordial, and it was full-body goosebump time.

Near the cruise end, it’s Seabourn Pursuit ’s inaugural day, and all cruisers gather for a shoreside ceremony on Ngula (Jar Island). Seabourn spent years developing relationships with the Wunambal Gaambera Traditional Owners to get to today. (Traditional Owners denotes Indigenous people possessing a traditional connection to an area of land designated their country from where their ancestors were forcibly removed.) These Traditional Owners, flown in by helicopters, are Seabourn Pursuit’ s godparents, marking the first time Kimberley’s Indigenous people are godparents of any expedition ship, despite some vessels having sailed here for decades.

Seabourn also contributes to tourism initiatives so Traditional Owners can return to their country during the dry season and sell their beautiful arts and crafts to all expedition ships, not just Seabourn’s. Pride and joy fill their faces, and tears moisten ours. Instead of the traditional Champagne bottle used for ship christening, this one is custom-made of sugar and filled with Kimberley sand — a poignant, decisive nod to sustainable tourism for which I’m fully onboard.

Palm Beach Zoo is helping save Florida's coral reef with a small team of divers and hope

Portrait of Kimberly Miller

The coral researchers weren't sure what they would find in the deep blue brine off of Palm Beach County's coast.

An early August dive to a reef named Playpen was the first of the year for the team from the Palm Beach Zoo , and whether they would sink into a white nightmare of bleached coral or find a happy colony of invertebrates was unknown.

For the past five years, the zoo, known mostly for its furry and feathered terrestrial life , has taken on the aquatic caretaking of imperiled rock-like animals in the salty confines of nearby Atlantic waters.

While Palm Beach County's coral may be more subdued than the sexy reefs of the Florida Keys, where flashy colors pop like fireworks, it's no less important.

“Corals supply food, shelter, healthy water quality and provide nursery grounds for juvenile fish. They are the foundational building block for the entire ocean ecosystem,” said zoo Chief Operating Officer Casey Coy, who is a member of the dive team. “Corals are also critically important to the economy in this area with all of the recreational fishing and diving.”

A small team of divers perform regular health checkups of the Florida Coral Reef Track that hugs Palm Beach County’s coast. The tract is the third-largest barrier reef in the world, stretching more than 350 miles from the Dry Tortugas in the Gulf of Mexico to the St. Lucie Inlet in Martin County.

Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach County's share of the vast colony of invertebrates are part of the Kristin Jacobs Coral Reef Ecosystem Conservation Area, which was established in 2018.

John Towey, the zoo’s media relations manager said the northernmost sections of the reef tract have a PR problem that can leave them overlooked when it comes to monitoring.

Resilience underwater: How 'happy coral' is thriving in a trashy, polluted port thrashed by cruise ships

“Something that’s 60-feet underwater doesn’t always get a lot of attention,” he said.

Doing work outside the zoo walls is something that sets the Palm Beach Zoo apart, Coy said.

"What's very common is for zoos to fund projects, but providing applied conservation is different," Coy said.

Palm Beach County has helped supplement the reef for 40 years with concrete and limestone rock structures. The Southeast Florida Coral Reef Initiative also works with scientists and the dive community to protect the reef by, in part, creating maps of where boats can moor safely, holding “reef friendly” workshops, and developing school curriculum.

The zoo’s coral assessment team said it fills in the gaps working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission as part of its Disturbance Response Monitoring Program. The program uses volunteers to look for the effects of warming waters on corals and outbreaks of stony coral tissue loss disease.

Corals bleach when overheated water causes the microscopic algae that live in coral tissue to die. The algae contributes food to the coral. Without it, the coral literally starves to death.

A 2023 marine heat wave in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea caused widespread bleaching in the Keys.

NOAA said a February study found that just 22% of 1,500 staghorn coral surveyed in the Keys survived last year’s heat wave.

“The good news is that the water temperatures here in Palm Beach County have been lower than the rest of the coral reef tract,” said Mike Terrell, the zoo’s coral conservation coordinator. “Healthy corals here could be the foundation in the future of helping revive the entire Florida reef.”

Terrell said the Gulf Stream current’s constant flush of saltwater flowing so closely to Palm Beach County’s coast contributes to the coral’s health. Although the current is warm, with temperatures in the upper 70s to mid 80s, it’s cooler than water in the Keys where coral is bleaching, Terrell said.

The rubbly mix of artificial and natural reef at Playpen is just south of the Lake Worth/Palm Beach Inlet in about 60 feet of water.

It’s one of 25 sites monitored by the zoo during August through October — the hottest and most perilous time of year for South Florida’s coral.

More: 'Daring' coral rescue as officials attempt to safeguard genetics of Florida reef tract

Ahead of the Playpen dive, Terrell described how they will string a line along the length of the coral tract. His job then was to swim along the line and check for coral stress from heat or disease.

What they found was a lemon shark, a loggerhead turtle and four varieties of coral, including star coral and brain coral.

What they didn’t find was any sign of widespread bleaching or disease.

“All of the species we saw today are doing really good and that's good news for the Palm Beach County reefs," Terrell said.

Sip to Save the Reefs: Coral Haze Returns with a Renewed Purpose

August 16, 2024 The Florida Aquarium

Facebook

Tampa, FL (August 16, 2024) – Raise a glass to coral conservation! Coppertail Brewing is supporting The Florida Aquarium with the relaunch of Coral Haze, a beloved pale ale with a mission. The crisp and refreshing beer is now available on draft and in 4-pack cans at Coppertail Brewing in Tampa, with $1 from every 16-ounce pint, and $4 from every 4-pack of Coral Haze sold flowing directly to the Aquarium’s critical coral conservation efforts.

“The return of Coral Haze represents more than just a beloved beer—it symbolizes the continued commitment of our community to protect and restore our vital coral ecosystems,” said Toni Wofford, The Florida Aquarium’s Vice President of Philanthropy. “Every pint enjoyed helps us advance groundbreaking conservation efforts that are critical to the survival of coral species facing extinction. We’re proud to collaborate with Coppertail Brewing once again to make an impact on the health of our oceans.”

Coppertail Brewing and The Florida Aquarium first collaborated in 2018 to create Coral Haze, with a shared purpose of making a meaningful impact on marine conservation. Since its debut, Coral Haze has become more than a fan-favorite beer—it’s a catalyst for change. Combined with another limited run in 2020, beer sales have already generated more than $27K for The Florida Aquarium’s coral conservation program. These funds are crucial in advancing the Aquarium’s groundbreaking work in coral reproduction and restoration, directly addressing the global coral crisis and protecting threatened species.

“We’re thrilled to bring back Coral Haze, a beer that not only resonates with our fans but also supports a cause close to our hearts,” added Gary Kost, Coppertail Brewing’s Marketing Director. “Collaborating with The Florida Aquarium allows us to contribute directly to the preservation of our coral reefs, a mission that aligns with our values as a brewery—we’re very much a nautical-themed brewery and our waterways are incredibly important to us. Every sip of Coral Haze helps protect the future of these critical ecosystems, and we’re honored to play a part in that effort.”

In September, Coral Haze will expand its reach to select Bay Area retail stores, including Total Wine & More, ABC Fine Wine & Spirits, and Luekens Wine & Spirits. This smooth and clean 6% ABV hazy pale ale features a light body and citrusy hop profiles that are balanced by a solid malt backbone, making it a perfect choice for enjoying sunny Florida days, while toasting a great cause.

Moscow: question for those who have gone from St Petersburg

I have read many of the threads that discuss whether or not Moscow is worth the expense and long day, especially when there are only 2 days in port.  I realize there are two strong opinions from people with one side saying it is worth it and the other side says stay in St Petersburg. We have decided to go Moscow on day 1 of our visit.

So, those who have done the long trip to Moscow....did you go with the cruise ship or a private guide?   If a private guide, who and would you recommend them?  Did you take the train both ways or fly one direction?

Been to Moscow several times. We have used the Sapsan both ways and have also flown both ways - never a combo of the train/plane. We enjoyed the Sapsan more than the flight. We have NOT travelled to Moscow when arriving by cruise ship so have no comment on your particular situation regarding a one day tour with only 2 days in St. Pete.  Good luck - hope the visit meets your expectations.

Thanks for the info.  Good to know you enjoyed the train more than the plane - I would expect we would too as flying is typically more hassle than taking the train.

We decided to book the trip to Moscow with the cruise ship after learning that if we miss the train or plane we don’t get a refund in addition to missing Moscow.  And, I’ve had friends who’s ship missed the St Petersburg stop due to weather.

Moscow is a great city but I would rather spend all two days in St Petersburg. Some years ago we had almost a week there and still it doesn’t seem enough. We also had one day in Moscow and the journey arranged by the local travel agency was well organized and comfortable. In a view of time restrictions of the journey (we spent almost 8 hours on the train and just 6-7 hours in the city) one day in Moscow still felt a little rushed. Anyway, enjoy planning your trip and hope you have a great time in Russia!

Coral

Just make sure the day you are going to Moscow, it is not one of their holidays or even a day before a holiday.

Moscow is an amazing city but it is frustrating when Red Square is closed for parades, etc.... It is hard to determine when they close it but it is definitely closed for their holidays. When it is closed - you can only walk around the exterior of the square and look in.

Thanks!   I will check.  We are in Moscow May 16.  I know May 9 is a holiday.

I have 2 days in St. Petersburg and am thinking about this possibility. I think it’s hard to do this with 2 days. The first day will take longer time to go ashore because of the immigration process. The second day is not possible due to the early all abroad time. It seems that it’s only worth doing it if there are 3 days in St. Petersburg especially when a full day of touring in Moscow is preferred.

For 2 days - spend the time in St. Petersburg. There is so much to see there. Save this for a 2nd trip.

When we were in St. Petersburg we were also very interested in visiting Moscow. We were already in Russia why not visit as much places as we could, right? We used Anastasia Travel for our St. Petersburg tour and also asked them to include Moscow. They were very helpful and were very much willing to arrange a day trip to Moscow for us but they suggested we just stay in St. Petersburg since we only had 2 days. They were kind enough to explain that we would just waste time and money if me push through with the Moscow trip. We would spend more time on the train instead of using the time to explore and enjoy the sights. They were actually correct and we ended up enjoying a wonderful 2-day tour in St. Petersburg. I guess we'll have to go back to see Moscow and make sure to stay longer!

When we went to St Petersburg we had the same dilemma. We decided not to go to Moscow and didn’t regret it one bit. There is so much to see! If you spend the 2 days in St Petersburg you can go and see Peterhof Palace on one of the days. We were on a Princess cruise and like flowslow, we booked our private tours with Katharina from Anastasia Travel.   This way we used our time to the fullest to see as much as possible at our pace with a personal guide. (We are not fond of the big group tours from the cruise lines).

We have two days and decided only staying in SPB for both days. We are thinking of forming a private tour with other cruisers on another forum as the CC roll call for that cruise is so quiet. We are looking into Anastasia Travel as well. Very excited to go!

I'm not sure about customs when coming in on a cruise ship. We were told that if we wanted to leave the ship, we would have to be on a tour, either a ships tour or private tour. I know we had to show our tour tickets at customs to be allowed to go further. We chose Alla tours and they were fantastic. We were docked in St. Petersburg for 3 days and we did go to Moscow on the Capsan train on the 2nd day. It was a VERY long day. We had to meet our group at 6:00am and were on the train at 7:00am. We arrived back at to our cabin at 1:30am the next day. It was a wonderful day and we're so glad we went but if we were in St. Petersburg for only 2 days, I probably wouldn't spend a day in Moscow. It is a 4 hour train ride each way, and if you need to be back to the ship to depart, it may not leave you much time in Moscow. The 8 hours we spent there, wasn't nearly enough. Traffic is horrible and we ended up getting off our bus and taking the subway to Red Square. Those 8 hours allowed us a tour of Red Square, which was phenomenal as well as a quick walk through GUM department store and a ride on the subway with several stops to see the mosaics, sculptures and chandeliers that are in the corridors of the subway stops.

But.....there is so much to see in St. Petersburg , the 2 days we spent there, were a whirl.

Whatever you decide to do, be sure you're in line to get off the ship before the ship arrives in port. We were in line an hour early and there were still about 20 people ahead of us. We found that the cruise ship allowed their tour groups to get off the ship first, so when we got to customs, the lines were outrageous. It took us about an hour in line and we were late starting our tour. I had organized the tour with Alla and had advertised it on our cruise forum here at Cruise Critic. There were 12 of us and we met up on the ship each morning and went through customs together so we all met the tour bus at the same time. That was very helpful!

The lines the first day were the worst and days 2 and 3 went much more quickly. Also, everyone was getting off the ship at the same time on Day 1, but tours met and left at different times on Days 2 and 3.

I believe that the ship tours to Moscow go via air, right?

Yes, as others have noted, there is MUCH to see in Saint Petersburg and in spending a week there one will barely scratch the surface - the same is true for Moscow.

It sounds like you want to get a "taste" of both cities - don't allow anyone to "throw water" on your plans as you best know what you want to do. You can always return for an extended visit.  😉

No, our ship tour is going by train there and back unless I misread something.  You are right...we just want a taste of both cities.  In fact, that is what we get from all cruise port stops - just a taste.  We are never there long enough to the see the area completely.

Interesting - I thought that the ship tours flew to Moscow when in port for only 2 days. Hope you will post upon return and let us know how it went.

Double checked and it says we go to Moscow on the high speed train.   Come back the same way.   From all I’ve read it takes a little longer (ship to Moscow sites) to fly than to take the train.

I've been thinking about that - and I might be wrong, but it seems to me an SPB-Moscow combo over a 3-day cruise is one of the few remaining cases where obtaining a full-fledged Russian visa actually makes sense (especially for families/groups and especially if one is willing to do some DIY trip planning).

Just to make sure, though - for those staying on the ship, is there some kind of curfew, or are you able to come and go as you please?

If you have a Russian visa there is no curfew - you may come and go as you wish. In fact, if you so choose, you can spend the entire time in the city (staying at a hotel in either Moscow or St. Petersburg) rather than returning to your ship each evening - but ONLY if you have a visa.

That is what my research shows too.  A quick google search showed the tourist visas for US citizens are $160.  I’m willing to pay for a tour rather than get the visa.  We’ve gotten most of the visas that are a pain to get and I’m tired of doing that.

2 minutes ago, Wayfairers said: I’m willing to pay for a tour rather than get the visa

I understand. Ru visa process can be expensive and time consuming, especially if you live far away from one of the visa centers.

I'm just trying to come up with a reasonably conservative number - what can one realistically expect to pay for a mad 1-day Moscow dash if they go DIY.

For a regular SPB-only itinerary, visa doesn't seem to make sense - not only price-wise, but also from the standpoint of convenience - all the local operators have their itineraries down to a science.

With Moscow, though, it's not so clear-cut.

I found that most of the tour operators will give you a tour but no guarantee that you make it to Moscow because you will miss the train if debarkation is too slow.  I found one tour that offers a 2 day tour with a flight to Moscow day 1 and train back and St Petersburg day 2.   Seriously considered them.   I briefly thought about getting a visa and spending the night in Moscow but never priced everything out. If you look into that I would love to see what you find. Probably not for us though because I want to see some of both cities.

I have visited Russia multiple times. I received my latest 3 year visa in May and here are the associated costs:

Single/Double/Multiple entry visa, consular fee = $198

Visa Center Processing fee = $50

Total = $248   (this is your total if you apply in person at one of the 4 consulates located in the USA - since I don't live near a Russian consulate, I must use the more costly mail option)

SO ... here is what I actually paid:

Multiple entry visa, consular fee = $198

Visa Center Processing fee by mail = $120

Return shipping/handling fee = $35

Total = $353

Totally worth the fee as I spend multiple weeks in Russia yearly and prefer DIY - personally, I would not consider a visa if it was a one time visit via cruise.

So, for DIY, added to the visa expense, one must add the cost of the sapsan train (or flight), Moscow transportation (metro is great), food & associated entrance fees to the Kremlin (and whatever else one has the time/desire to visit).

FYI: There is a HOHO in both Moscow & St. Petersburg.

Okay, I think the diy budget might be something like ₽20,000 (about $300) per person. This includes:

Train tickets: ₽9000 (5+4); Kremlin+armory: 1700 (1000+700)

Boat ride:600

Meals: 3000 (1500 per casual meal)

Contingencies (Uber ride if needed, etc): 2500.

It's based on a number of assumptions, so real-life mileage will vary - please let me know if you identify some glaring omissions or errors.

Assumptions:
