Fort Bragg is home to the largest concentration of sea-shore glasses in the world. These glass fragments are often washed up as tiny pieces of broken or damaged glass.

The museum has three rooms that house a vast collection of Farrington’s pieces, including unusual and rare pieces.

The exhibits are organized by color and describe the most common reasons for coloring. For example, the formation of lavender glasses due to the sun’s oxidation of magnesium-clarified.

The exhibits also include other objects, such as bottles, stoppers, and marbles.

14. Fort Bragg Dog Park

The Fort Bragg Dog Park is located at the center of the City; it has a large landmass for recreational activities, dog shows, challenges, and other fun activities of pet dogs.

The park is a happening house for all kinds of pups with different sizes and functions; it serves as the City’s favorite pet-friendly dog tourist attraction in California.

The land area of the park is separated into sections ranging from sections that are covered with grass to the big dog side, which has lovely shade, and sections of dogs with large canines and small and timid pups, which provide ample space for a dog of all size to play around.

Additionally, the Fort Bragg Dog Park is one of the top attractions for a pet in the City; all dogs should be fixed and properly vaccinated before entering the park with a current license in place.

15. Jackson State Forest

This forest, located in the middle of the Mendocino Coast redwood area, is the largest of eight demonstration forests that CAL FIRE manages.

It is home to large numbers of coastal redwoods, Bishop pine, Douglas, Grand fir, Hemlock, and alder trees m. There are also a variety of native animals.

There are three trails available for demonstration within the forest, including those on the Forest History Trail or the Waterfall Grove Trail.

Popular leisure activities include swimming, biking, hiking, picnicking, horseback riding, and camping.

The forest has seasonally operated campgrounds open between mid-May and September on two campgrounds.

Seasonal hunting is allowed. Visitors should be aware that fishing is not permitted on the property due to the state Department of Fish and Wildlife laws.

16. North Coast Brewing Company

North Coast Brewing Company, a local independent craft brewery on the Mendocino Coast, was established in 1988 by Mark Ruedrich.

Nationally, the brewery is known for its award-winning brand name. Its beers have won hundreds at national and international contests.

The company produces 19 seasonal and year-round beers, including its Red Seal flagship Ale Scrimshaw Pilsner and Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout. These beers are available nationwide in 48 states.

It also produces San Francisco beers with its Acme label. This was acquired in 1994.

North Coast Brewing Company’s Fort Bragg location has a taproom as well as an eatery. They offer made-to-order pizzas, fine pub food, and a wide range of other beverages.

It is an annual patron of the Monterey Jazz Festival (SFJazz), The Mendocino Film Festival, and the Oregon Jazz Party.

18. Pudding Creek Beach

Pudding Creek Beach, a public-use beach, is located near MacKerricher State Park. It is under an old train trestle which is now used for a recreation trail bridge.

The beach is located in Pudding Creek’s deep, sandy cove. It is surrounded by high walls of rock. Visitors can park at no cost on Highway 1.

It is home to a large Tidal Pool as well as a variety of meandering trails that lead to hiking trails that take you south towards Glass Beach or MacKerricher Main Beach.

During the summer months, sunbathing and swimming are popular activities on the beach.

Beach access is available for dogs on leashes, and Restrooms are available for guests.

19. Guest House Museum

This mansion was built with redwood from the coast. It was originally used as a senior officer and later as a guesthouse for the company.

The company kept the mansion throughout many business deals and changed its name until it was finally given to Fort Bragg by Georgia-Pacific Company in 1985.

It is now a living museum that is run by the Fort Bragg–Mendocino Coast Historical Society. It houses a variety of railroad-related artifacts and civic history.

20. Skunk Train

Skunk Train , a famous historic railroad line located in California’s Mendocino County, offers guests the opportunity to travel on an 1885-year-old train that was operated by the California Western Railroad.

The name was coined in 1925 because of the introduction of a single unit, self-propelled motorcars, as well as the smell the engines generated.

As part of guided tours, trains depart from Fort Bragg stations and Willits stations through Mendocino County’s renowned Redwood Route.

Noyo River Canyon tours depart from Fort Bragg and travel alongside the Pudding Creek estuary, the Noyo River and showcase native wildlife and flora.

Excursions with special trains, such as the BBQ dinner train, are also available. You can purchase food and beverages at the station.

22. Triangle Tattoo and Museum

Triangle Tattoo and Museum, a Fort Bragg-based tattoo shop and museum, is one of a few museums that have tattoo-related artifacts.

The museum was established in 1986 by Madame Chinchilla, Mr. G., radio personalities, tattoo artists, and radio personalities.

It is located in a historic Victorian storefront, right across from Fort Bragg’s Guest House Museum.

The museum is open to visitors all week long and includes a variety of interesting exhibits on tattoo history and how they are used across cultures.

The exhibits comprise one American tattoo patriotism exhibit, an exhibit on circus sideshows as well as an exhibit on prisoners who were tattooed with no consent.

You can see artifacts made from tattoos and historical photos that depict indigenous or Western characters with unique tattoos.

Tours of the museum are offered for small groups and organizations, including curriculum-incorporated tours for school groups.

23. Fort Bragg Coastal Trail

Fort Bragg Coastal Trail runs 4.5 miles and is paved by Fort Bragg City Council in the Fort Bragg Coastal Trail and Restoration Project.

This trail’s first section, which was opened for public access in January 2015, covers 82 acres of the former Georgia-Pacific Mill site. It also includes other industrial lands.

It also extends for over 1 mile along the coast bluff drainage, which was just restored to its original condition.

Fourteen interpretive signs give information about the region’s natural and economic background. Two welcoming areas welcome visitors at this trail’s Glass Beach trailhead.

Additionally, the trail has twelve benches that were created by the local artist.

The trail’s second phase, completed in 2018, adds approximately a mile and includes additional interpretive panels as well as stairs that lead to Fort Bragg Landing Beach.

26. Seaside Beach

Seaside Beach can be found nine miles from Fort Bragg. It is adjacent to MacKerricher State Park’s northern end at Seaside Creek’s outlet into the Pacific Ocean.

The beach has a small, free parking lot located on Highway 1, about a mile north of the Ten Mile River bridge.

26. Headlands Coffeehouse

Headlands Coffeehouse opened its doors in April 1995, when co-owners Mary Gealey, David Gealey, and Peter Gealey first opened it.

Juan and Lenore Naal, a husband-and-wife couple, purchased the coffeehouse in 2006.

The cafe aims to create an ambiance that is an intimate neighborhood hangout and jazz bar, with live jazz as well as folk and world concerts seven days a week.

There are many traditional coffee shop drinks available, including the unique blended frozen Glacier drinks.

You can choose from a variety of breakfast, lunch, or dinner buffets. Highlight dishes include Fort Bragg Bakery bagels and grilled panini.

The park’s southern section is home to Glass Beach, which is known for its sand-polished, glass-covered fields, which were formed by the accumulation of trash during the 20th Century.

You can fish on the 30 acres of Lake Clone. This manmade reservoir was formed by the damming of a brackish marsh.

Visitors can also indulge in other popular outdoor activities, which include hiking, biking, and horseback riding.

You can also camp at a campsite during the night. There are also excursions to the ocean for whale watching.

28. Northcoast Artists Gallery

It is run by its members and hosts ongoing exhibitions of their work. These include rotating solo and group exhibitions.

Twenty full-time gallery members produce multidisciplinary pieces using mediums like painting, photography, sculpture, jewelry making, textiles, and painting.

This gallery hosts the Friends Show every year. It invites both local artists and long-term associates to display their work for the community.

History, art, fine dining, family fun, outdoor sports, spectacular coastline, and splendid lodgings are just a few of the elements that make Fort Bragg and Mendocino County a unique Northern California destination.

Many of the experiences in Mendocino County were hosted for my husband and me. However, all opinions are mine.

The dramatic Mendocino County coastline can be accessed by road and air.

While you need a small aircraft to access the municipal airports in Willits, Fort Bragg, Little River, and Anderson Valley, better fly-in options are larger airports. Santa Rosa is the closest at 85 miles away.

Three Roads Head West

Three roads take you west of Highway 101 to your Mendocino County destinations.

From the north, exit at Leggett on Highway 1 and enjoy the stunning coastal route traveling south. From the east, exit at Willits, taking Highway 20, which drops you at the south end of Fort Bragg.

From the southeast at Cloverdale, take Highway 128, which takes you through fascinating and picturesque Anderson Valley. The quintessential postcard landscape through the Navarro River Redwoods State Park caused us to stop frequently to gaze in awe at the stately trees and discern their subtle fragrance.

• Allow lots of time for stops through Anderson Valley.
• The roads to and from Highway 101 have many curves. Use caution during all hours and follow posted speed limits.
• If you are driving from the south, take Highway 1 from San Francisco and enjoy the incomparable California Coast on your 172-mile journey north.
• The Mendocino County coast enjoys very mild weather year-round, and snow is virtually non-existent. Fog and low overcast are common. Bring layers for warmth. When we arrived on the Mendocino Coast in late spring, the strong, biting wind caused even the locals to remark how unusual it was. They said these winds typically only occur during the winter.

 1. Fort Bragg (Known For Glass Beach)

The town of Fort Bragg was founded in 1857 before the American Civil War and is a California Historical Landmark.

Once a trash dump in the 1950s and ’60s, Glass Beach gained popularity as the waves washed the glass onto the shore as smooth little gems. Unfortunately, visitors carried away much of the sea glass, so now it’s illegal to take away any of the glass from this southern beach of the MacKerricher State Park.

2. Skunk Train Railbikes Tour

The most exciting experience in Fort Bragg is the Railbikes Tour of Pudding Creek Estuary . Departing from the Fort Bragg Skunk Train station, custom-built railbikes accommodate two people and are pedal-powered.

Running from spring through fall on the same tracks as the Skunk Train to Glen Blair Junction, this excursion even welcomes pets. 

3. Fort Bragg Murals

A great way to see the murals in the Fort Bragg Alleyway Art Project is by railbike. One mural, painted on the wall of the railbikes garage, is named “Mendocino, Land of Extravagant Visions” by Marta Alonso Canillar. As a love letter to Mendocino County, iconic fragments of the county blend with the artist’s life experiences in one colorful mural. 

4. Skunk Train From Fort Bragg On The Pudding Creek Express

The historic Pudding Creek Express departs the Fort Bragg train station for a seven-mile scenic roundtrip train excursion through the Pudding Creek Estuary. Once the train reaches Glen Blair Junction, passengers can get out, explore the trails through the redwoods, or have a picnic. 

5. Skunk Train From Willits

A 2-hour round trip ride on a historic Diesel-Electric engine train will take you from the valley floor to the highest point on the historic Wolf Tree Turn line . Descending into the Noyo River Canyon, thick with native redwood trees, a brief stop at Crowley allows passengers to get off the train for better views. 

6. Fort Bragg And Mendocino Certified Farmers Markets

Proud to encourage buying and eating locally, Fort Bragg hosts the Certified Farmers Market on Wednesdays, and Mendocino hosts it on Fridays. Everything from knife sharpening on-site to raw meats for your pets to handcrafted organic heart-shaped chocolates. All produce is Certified Organic.

7. Noyo Harbor

Noyo Harbor is the boat docking and port area for Fort Bragg, California. Fresh fish caught in coastal waters out of Noyo Harbor is served within hours to a couple of days at the finest restaurants up and down the Coast. Chefs pride themselves on serving the freshest fish at their table.

Movie scenes have been filmed in Noyo Harbor. Perhaps the most recognizable is The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming .

Whale watching from November to February is a popular activity out of Noyo Harbor during the whale migration between Mexico and Alaska. 

8. Noyo River Grill

Nestled among small houses and fishing-related businesses in Noyo Harbor, Noyo River Grill serves an unlikely treat. Learning the secret of making light, homemade fettuccine pasta from their mother, Chef Guillermo Medina, and his brother, Gabriel, who runs the front of the house, brings this indulgence as a “special” to their diners.

Along with a fresh array of seafood, patrons get a great view of the river and ocean. Live performances on Fridays and Saturdays make the Noyo River Grill popular in Fort Bragg for dining and entertainment.

9. Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens

Plan your escape to botanical pleasure at Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens . The Gardens are a destination in all seasons of the year.

The mild coastal climate and quality soil are ideally suited for flowering Rhododendron plants, succulents and cactus, heaths and heathers, as well as perennials.

A haven for bird watchers, The Gardens host more than 180 bird species throughout the year.

When we drove into the parking lot, ponds with flowering waterlilies met our gaze reminding us of Monet’s Water Garden in Giverny, France. 

10. Point Cabrillo Light Station

A restored lighthouse is located along the dramatic Mendocino County coastline. The Point Cabrillo Light Station , a California State Historic Park, is between Fort Bragg and Mendocino. 

In addition to the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, the 1st Assistant Lightkeeper’s House and the Marine Science Exhibit are open to the public. The Park is open from sunrise to sunset every day of the year.

Pro Tips: It’s a half-mile walk from the parking lot near the main road, Highway 1, to the lighthouse. Disabled-person parking spaces close to the lighthouse require a placard. Don’t forget to take your Lighthouse Passport to be stamped for your collection. 

11. Pygmy Forest Discovery Trail

A trail at Van Damme State Park called the Pygmy Forest Discovery Trail is a fascinating forest that showcases short, stunted trees and shrubs that may be over 100 years old. They survive on poor soil fertility but do not thrive. A complex ecological condition of underlying wave terraces associated with unusual soils restricts vegetation growth.

The Pygmy Forest Discovery Trail is an easily accessible boardwalk for those requiring wheelchair access. 

A few yards beyond the Pygmy Forest, the stunted vegetation gives way to full-size redwood trees.

12. Forest Bathing

In the 1980s, the Japanese developed a practice of bathing in the forest atmosphere to reduce stress and unplug from technology. Shinrin in Japanese means “forest,” and yoku means “bath.” Shinrin-yoku means you take in the forest through your senses. It is simply being in nature and intentionally connecting your five senses – sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch.

Sara Bassindale of All Rhythms Wellness was the guide for my first s hinrin-yoku experience . The Pygmy and Redwood Forest at Van Damme State Park was the perfect setting. While you don’t need a guide to forest bathe, I was glad Sara taught me how to experience it for the first time.

13. Van Damme State Park

The fern-filled lush forest at Van Damme State Park offers camping year-round.

In addition, it’s an excellent place for families and outdoor activities like hiking, camping, running, birding, or watching salmon spawn.

Van Damme State Beach is across the highway. Some wheelchair-accessible accommodations are available in the park and a beach wheelchair is available upon request seven days in advance for beach use.

14. Anderson Valley

Approaching coastal Mendocino and Fort Bragg from the southeast on Highway 128 make Anderson Valley your mini destination. Stop for a meal, some art, and some wine tasting.

Anderson Valley grape growers specialize in Alsatian varietals, Pinot Noir, and sparkling wines. Annual major wine events include the International Alsace Varietals Festival in February and the Pinot Noir Festival in May.

Many artists live and work in Anderson Valley and represent a broad spectrum of formats. Open Studios/Art Tours are traditionally held during Memorial Day weekend for the Anderson Valley Art Guild .

One artist whose work fascinates me is Rebecca Johnson . We visited her studio, located on Highway 128 in Navarro. Many of her stone carvings dot the grounds. You can walk around each piece and see the artwork and craftsmanship from all sides.

Pro Tip: Call ahead to make an appointment to visit artists in their studios. Personal conversations bring their artwork to life.

The Bewildered Pig , on Highway 128 in Philo, serves curated meals, and reservations are required. Their hyper-local and seasonally driven menu is five courses with optional wine pairings. I’m told it’s a luscious food experience along with delicious hospitality.

Once called “The Dumps,” residents used this area as a landfill, discarding glass objects, among other waste, until 1967. Although larger debris was later cleared, myriad glass pieces remained. 

Over decades, nature's persistent waves and wind transformed this glass into vibrant, polished stones that melded with the beach's natural grains. Today, these coves brim with sea glass, a testament to nature's rejuvenation ability. However, if you're wondering, “Can you take glass from Glass Beach Fort Bragg?” the answer is no. As part of a state park, collecting or removing sea glass is prohibited by law. Visitors are urged to admire but leave the beauty undisturbed.

5. Explore MacKerricher State Park

Notably, a vast tidal pool to the north is perfect for exploration. And if you fancy a longer walk, nearby trails connect to other beaches, including the renowned Glass Beach we mentioned above. It's an ideal spot for frugal travelers looking to enjoy natural beauty without the price tag.

9. Walk Around Downtown Fort Bragg

Downtown Fort Bragg is an excellent spot for everyone. If you like art, check out the colorful wall paintings around town. One of the special paintings shows a lighthouse called “The Lighthouse.” There are also art shops like Northcoast Artists Gallery and Glass Fire Art to look around in. If you want to buy something as a gift to take home, then plenty of tourist shops sell things like pottery, necklaces, clothes, and gifts. There is a central business area for those interested in old stories. If you are lucky enough, there might be a guided tour that you can join.

10. Visit Guest House Museum

The Guest House Museum is an important spot in Fort Bragg. It's a big old house built in 1892 from redwood trees. It was made by a wealthy man named Charles Russell Johnson for special guests and himself. The house was special because it was the first in the area with electricity and running water. It even has beautiful colored glass windows near the stairs. Today, it's a place where you can learn about Fort Bragg's history and see old things from the town. Friendly people inside will tell you stories about the past. Outside, there's a big piece of a really old tree. The museum is near the famous Skunk Train on 343 North Main Street. It's usually open on Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm. It's free to go in, but they accept donations.

11. Kayak The Noyo River

Want to try kayaking? The Noyo River is a great spot. It's less famous than Mendocino's Big River but is calm and pretty. You can put your kayak in the water at two spots in the South Harbor. If you don't have a kayak, you can rent one all year from Subsurface Progression or in the summer from Noyo Fishing Center. The best way to see the Noyo River is with a guided tour.

12. Walk Around Noyo Harbor

Noyo Harbor in Fort Bragg is one of the last working harbors on the US West Coast. It's perfect for a walk where you can watch fishing boats go out and come back with fresh fish. The harbor is busy with the sounds of bells and whistles, and you'll see boats, ropes, and all the activity of a natural seaport. There are also many good seafood restaurants in the Noyo Harbor District. Noyo Fish Company has seafood ready to cook or eat. Sea Pal Cove is famous for its hamburgers and fish and chips. Dolphin Isle is good for breakfast and sandwiches, and Silver’s at the Wharf and Princess Seafood Restaurant are great for lunch and dinner, with lovely views and music.

13. Ride The Skunk Train

The Skunk Train is a special journey through the redwoods that's been around since 1885. You'll ride through big old trees, go over bridges, and pass through cool tunnels to reach the Noyo River Canyon. The views are beautiful and look the same as over 100 years ago. Wondering about the name “Skunk Train”? The train had a strong smell in the past because of its fumes. People said it was like a skunk because you could smell it before seeing it. But don't worry, it's just a fun name now! The real name is California Western Railroad. It's a great way to see nature and learn some history.

14. Walk The Pomo Bluffs Park Trail 

Pomo Bluffs Park in Fort Bragg sits on a high cliff near the Noyo River. From February to April, it's a great place to see gray whales as they move to colder waters up north. There's a smooth path for walking and cycling along the cliff and some smaller dirt paths that lead to points over the rough sea. Watch the waves hit the rocks and see Noyo Bay on the park's north side. You can also spot Noyo Harbor Beach from the cliff. There are seats along the path where you can sit and enjoy the lovely view. Remember, there's no beach here, and the edges are high, so don’t go too close to the edge while walking.

15. Visit The Model Railroad

Discover the area's logging past with a visit to the Model Railroad. This captivating display boasts over 1,300 feet of track, representing six real-life miles. Witness miniature versions of logging camps, bridges, a pier, a town, and more. A treat for both kids and adults!

This family-friendly attraction offers a detailed peek into the logging history through its intricate model setup. Find this fascinating railroad just beside the Skunk Train Depot in Fort Bragg. And the best part? Entry is complimentary with a Skunk Train ticket.

16. Eat With The Locals

David's Deli – Currently topping the list on Trip Advisor, this local deli near the harbor is a favorite hangout spot in Mendocino. Not only does it boast a diverse menu, but you can also expect generous portions. Nestled in the boatyard shopping center, it's a top pick for breakfast or lunch.

Eggheads Restaurant – Many say, “It's not a trip to Fort Bragg without breakfast at Eggheads!” Dive into a unique experience with its Wizard of Oz theme throughout, making every meal magical.

The Wharf – This spot serves local cuisine ranging from American to seafood. What stands out is the scenic harbor view, especially if you're seated next to the window. Perfect for watching boats glide by while you dine.

Glass Beach, nestled within MacKerricher State Park near Fort Bragg, Northern California, is a trio of small, narrow beaches adorned with millions of smooth, colorful sea glass pieces in various shapes and sizes.

When I first set foot on Glass Beach, I marveled at how the ocean could transform discarded items into such captivating gems.

However, be prepared that the glass may not be as abundant as you expect, as it has sadly become depleted over time.

A steep descent from the coastal trail at Noyo Headlands Park leads to the beaches, where the remaining glass is primarily clear, with occasional brown and green pieces and the rare red or blue fragment.

The area is also home to tide pools, so plan your visit during low tide to explore these fascinating ecosystems and observe the glass up close.

The dramatic coastline features rugged cliffs and massive rocks, making it an ideal spot for bird watching and admiring the powerful waves crashing over the rocky terrain.

Glass Beach is also a popular destination for scuba diving and snorkeling, offering a depth range of 10 to 60 feet.

If you’re looking to do a nice road trip from San Francisco or the Bay Area, Fort Bragg makes a nice weekend getaway or longer for you to enjoy the ocean and slow down and unwind from the daily pressure. You’ll love being outdoors and enjoying the simple things like a walk on the beaches lined with wildflowers, cruising the downtown district or just lounging over a delicious seafood meal is always a great way to enjoy the vibe and easy lifestyle here. Fort Bragg, California is also a fantastic base to explore other areas in Northern California including; Mendocino wine country and tasting experiences, Mendocino, Eureka, Crescent city, state parks in this region and a fun road trip along the Hwy 1 coast highway.

Where is Fort Bragg Located?

Located about a 3 ½ hours drive from San Francisco, you can take Highway101 and cut through to inland through Anderson Valley on CA 128 or take the slow scenic drive Highway 1 to reach the Mendocino town and a little further down to reach Fort Bragg, Calfornia.

Being a year-round destination, it is hard to pick and ideal time but the weather does have an effect on what you can do and see in the area. Temperatures along the coast are cool between the mid 50s to 60s degrees and summer tends to bring more foggy days and winters are miserable with storms and windy weather. The shoulder season in spring and fall tend to be the best times when the weather is nicer with some warm skies in the area. Foggy days is typical in the mornings and later burn off into beautiful skies for the rest of the day.

Top 15 things to enjoy around Fort Bragg and surrounding areas

1. explore the downtown district.

With a very walkable and cute downtown district with basically two parallel blocks, you can shop till you drop at all the fun art galleries, home stores and cool boutiques lining both sides of the street. Or for a nice break pop into any of the bakeries or specialty food venues along the way or even have a nice meal if you want to lounge and linger longer over a delicious meal. It’s fun to window shop, look for souvenirs and have a chat with all the friendly locals and shop owners in the area.

2. Go Beach combing on the various beaches

Of all the things to do in Fort Bragg, spending some time on the fun beaches to do some beach combing, looking for glass, or just enjoying nature and the rugged coastlines are simple and fun to do around town. All of these beaches are hang out beaches because the water is extremely cold, but they are perfect for having picnics, beach combing and just enjoying some of the gorgeous views in the area.

3. Treasure hunt for tumbled glass at the glass beach

A popular past time with locals and visitors alike is to explore glass beach found at the coastal trail on Noyo Headlands Park. Climb down the steep pathways to the beach area and you’ll find finely tumbled glass particles that have been smoothed from the generations of time on the beach. Originally a dump site in the area that was common on the coastlines of Fort Bragg, glass bottles, headlights and other glass were continually dumped here and in time have been broken down with the rough surf and created a treasure finding spot for collectors. Other fun things to do is check out the fun tidepools to explore or if you are brave go snorkeling or diving to find some abalone or check out the underwater scene in the area.

The famous glass beaches at Fort Bragg are a fun draw to the area but did you know that there is also a cool museum dedicated to tumbled glass from the area? Check out the sea glass museum and collections of the Captain Cass’ sea glass collection of over 150,000 pieces of found and made things with the sea glass. Chat up the owner and he might give you more inside tips of how to find more glass treasures in the area that are worth getting to on your own.

Visit the State Parks, historic monuments and coastal trails

There are quite a few parks located around and close to Fort Bragg, Ca from the forested areas to the coastlines with rugged cliffs and trails to wander around. It’s fantastic to be outdoors and explore the inland forest areas to the beach and rugged coastline areas of Fort Bragg.

4. Visit MacKerricher State Park 

One of the best state parks in the area that combines both forested trails, fern grottoes and waterfalls to bluffs, headlands and wild coastlines with trails to explore in each of those areas. Enjoy the tidepools and look for marine life including migrating whales passing through the area. Exploring Haul road allows you to visit Cleone lake and hike, bike or jog this 10 mile path that is a popular spot for birdwatching and finding migratory and local birds in the area.

5. Point Cabrillo Light Station

Part of the the California historic park, the Point Cabrillo Light Station sits on headland in between Fort Bragg and Mendocino with a distinctive compound that includes the lighthouse, three lightkeeper homes, a blacksmith and carpentry shop and other out buildings that are a living period museum to explore. There’s even a cool 240 gallon aquarium to check out in the blacksmith shop that is cool to see and enjoy.

6. Hike the Noyo Headlands coastal trail

A fantastic trail that you can easily hike or bike through at the Noyo Headlands coastal trail that is actually part of the California coastal trail that runs throughout the state. In this section of the five mile trail, you can stroll on your own and enjoy the tide pools, coves and hidden beaches and the spectacular coastal views in the area. Parking is easy at either ends of the trail route for you to access the trail.

7. Explore Pudding Creek Beach

Explore this scenic area of Pudding Creek where it flows directly into the ocean with some small pools or lagoons that develop with the tide. You can explore the beach areas and check out the natural caves, arches and wetland areas surrounding the creek area. It’s fun to beachcomb the area, have a nice picnic and explore all the areas around the beach, sand dunes areas and photograph this scenic spot of Fort Bragg.

8. visit the pudding creek trestle bridge.

This historic trestle bridge on the coastline was built in the early 1900s and used to transport local timber in the area for export. At over five hundred feet in length you can actually walk across the bridge and enjoy this unique experience on the bridge and capture it in pictures. Originally part of five trestle bridges that hauled lumber from the local mill about 10 miles inland from Fort Bragg the bridge is fun to explore and even enjoy a fantastic sunset view at Fort Bragg.

9. Go on a Railbike tour or on the Skunk Train

Operating since 1885, the skunk train is an institution in the area with a 7 mile tour through forested areas in the Pudding Creek estuary and traveling to the end at Glen Blair Station and back to Fort Bragg. Along the way you’ll pass through old growth redwood forests, canyons, waterfalls, trestle bridges and and a historic part of Mendocino county. You can also do an unusual railbike tour experience on a two man type of open air bike that is self powering through real railroad tracks in the same areas covered by the Skunk train. It’s a fun way to exercise and explore nature at the same time.

10. Visit the Mendocino Botanical Garden

This gorgeous botanical garden combines both wild nature with wetlands, bluffs, the rugged coastline and forests along with more manicured and beautiful swaths of perennials and annuals plants with a colorful burst of foliage and flowers that thrive in this garden. The best time to enjoy the gardens is during summer to early fall when all the beds are bursting with flowers in bloom. For a change of pace you can do some of the lovely hikes through the wetlands and forest areas and then into the coastal bluffs trail for stunning views of the coastal areas.

11. Enjoy a Model Railroad Experience

This is the place to bring out the child in your with a model railroad experience that is fun and unique. The model railroad you’ll find at the Mendocino Coast Model Railroad Society is a fun place to visit with over 1300 feet of track, cool town, logging mills and camp and local backdrops with model trains. Managed by local volunteer train enthusiasts love to share their passion, you’ll love visiting with your family here. The visit is free with the purchase of a Skunk train or railbike experience and housed in a building close to the Skunk Train Depot.

11. Explore Mendocino Town

A short drive south from Fort Bragg is the quirky art community at Mendocino town or community as it is actually designated. You can easily explore the main drags with two parallel streets full of art galleries, shops and boutique stores, delicious bakery, coffee and artisanal food shops or have a bigger meal at any of the fabulous restaurants. 13. Go kayaking on the Noyo river

The water and kayaking is easy to do around the quiet estuary areas and the Noyo river hosted through Liquid Fusion Kayaking . A popular family friendly activity to do on the water and enjoy the views, wildlife and even some sea lions, harbor seals, otters and other marine life on the river. You can sign up for tours or just rent the kayaks on your own with tips of where to head in the right direction on your own.

I have heard about Glass Beach and have long wanted to go to the Fort Bragg area… I have heard that you aren’t allowed to collect beach glass from there; is that correct? Looks like there are several other sites in the area I would like to see. Will put this area on my list!

The glass beach is located on a state beach at Fort Bragg so collecting things on the beach is not typically allowed but people do have their own mindset on treasures they find anywhere on their travels don’t they?

Point Cabrillo and the glass beach are my go-tos in this new duscovery!
