Maldives Cruise: Indian Ocean Dhoni Life

Really enjoyed it! Good boat, good food, great snorkelling and also the CEO helped me so I could do a dive instead of snorkelling one of the days which I really appreciate. Could skip the beach clean up, not that its not needed but after collecting several of bags with trash the bags where just left on the island. Just left us all with a bad feeling, first of all seeing all the trash and then collecting as much as we could, was so much left though, just to leave it on the island in the end 🤷‍♀️. BUT the tour was great!

Quite an amazing adventure on Maldives made possible with care of the ecosystems and support to the Maldivian people. My guide, Archie/Muhamed was the best guide anyone could ever have in seeing and enjoying the beauty of Maldives. His connections with Maldivian people made my trip comfortable, convenient and an adventure to treasure. Would love to do it again with my family! Thank you so much Archie and Ruth!!

Maldive Dhoni Cruise Tour

Maldive Dhoni Cruise

The entire cruse was brilliant from day one and I was really sad to leave the Maldives on Sunday; so much so that I shall be booking another trip to go back same time next year. To be honest I was a little apprehensive about the trip as there appeared to be too much downtime on the itinerary however how wrong was I? The pace of the trip was perfect (snorkeling 2 or 3 time per day with downtime in between), the snorkeling was 5; the food on board fantastic (great chef) and the relaxed experience and uniqueness of the Maldives was just what you needed to get over the cold winter months in the UK. I saw more sea life that I imagined and had a fabulous time aboard the Dhoni. Special thanks to the tour leader (Shan) and the entire boat crew who were great. Some tips: You don’t need an adaptor plug as the plugs on the boat take UK plugs. Wear a bandanna if you are thin-on-top as when snorkeling your head can get burnt. Don’t overload yourself with too many changes of clothes; swimwear, a rash vest, shorts, track-suit trousers (for visiting the islands) and t-shirts are all you need.

We've just come back from fantastic holidays in Maldives, Maafushi island and must say that the tour with 3 really exciting full day trips was awesome. All the 8 days we spent really actively taking part in different trips apart from those ones that were included in the itinerary by Paylesstoursindia. We had an unforgettable time there . The accommodation was really nice with delicious food included in the plan. Paylesstoursindia made a great choice in terms of hotel, island and excursions choice. We are amazed and will recommend.

The Maldives is an Asian country set in the midst of the Indian Ocean. This small nation is spread across the Laccadive Sea and the Arabian Sea, with almost 1,200 little islands forming it. Each of these isles is clustered into atolls, with Male being the capital. A quick way to soak in the city feels of this island is to take the Half Day Male City Walking Tour .

Since you will most probably be landing at the Velana International Airport which is located in Male, the world’s smallest capital , you should ideally begin your exploration from there itself. Although there are many other public islands in The Maldives , Male happens to be the most convenient to arrive at since it is home to Maldives’ Inte rnational Airport .

Half Day Male City Walking Tour Timings & Fee

This 4-hour tour of Male, the capital city of The Maldives , is conducted twice daily. The morning slot is available daily  except Friday’s from 9 AM to 1 PM, while the afternoon timings are 2 PM to 6 PM and available 7 days a week. Depending on your arrival or departure schedule, you can select either of the Maldives half day tours .

The Half Day Male City Walking Tour is priced at USD 55 per Adult above 13 years and USD 27.50 per Child (6 – 12 years) . The fee includes return transfers to and from the jetty, some light refreshment at a café, entrance to Sultan Park and charges of the walking tour guide. Local taxes are priced into the ticket, so you need not pay extra. The tax amount includes 16% GST and 10% service charge.

Half Day Male City Walking Tour Experience

If there is any way to understand Maldives’ history and culture in a matter of a few hours, it is through this half day walking tour of Male. Right at the outset, your tour guide gives you an overview of the capital city, which is an island in itself. As your meeting point is a jetty at the harbour area, you are also given some information about its importance in the context of islands.

Maldives’ Education System & Religion

You gradually move on to Male’s oldest school and get to know about its education system that has ensured a 98% rate of literacy in The Maldives. The schooling system is also closely linked to the religion of this country. Islam is the state mandated religion in The Maldives, and anybody who wishes to become a citizen must convert into a Muslim first. As you spend more time here, you will notice how Islam has a deep impact in almost everything in the lives of the Maldivians.

Old Friday Mosque & Abu – al – Barakaath’s Tomb

As you learn about their faith, you are taken past the Old Friday Mosque. Also known as Malé Hukuru Miskiy, this is one of the oldest mosques in the city and quite grand at the same time. You will pass by the tomb of Abu – al – Barakaath who influenced one of the erstwhile sultans of The Maldives to convert the country into Islam.

Royal Garden Café

Your next stop is the Royal Garden Café where you will be able to relish some traditional black tea. The café is a nobleman’s house with intricate Maldivian architecture that will catch your eye. Male’s Royal Garden Café is one of the favourite gathering spots of the locals, and if you wish to interact with them, you will get ample opportunity to do so here.

November 3rd Memorial

After the tea break, you will continue your walk to Male’s November 3rd Memorial. Erected in the memory of 8 military servicemen who were martyred in 1988 while they tried to protect The Maldives from a terrorist attack, this is a place to grieve and be thankful for the sacrifice of those who give up their lives for their country.

Sultan Park & National Museum

The next halt of the Half Day Male City Walking Tour is the sprawling Sultan Park. This park is a reminder of the time when The Maldives was not a republic but was governed by a Sultanate. The park is a great place for leisurely strolls and taking pictures against art installations. Sultan Park also houses the National Museum which exhibits traditional attire, coins, artillery, paintings and a lot of other artefacts that underscore the culture and history of The Maldives.

Islamic Centre & Jumhooree Maidhaan

After you exit Sultan Park, you are taken back toward the harbour. You might recognize some of the monuments that you have already seen by this time during the walking tour. You will also walk past the Islamic Centre of Male and reach a popular meeting point, called the Jumhooree Maidhaan. Alternatively known as the Republic Square or Independence Square, this is where a tall flag post bears the national flag of The Maldives.

Your walking tour guide will explain to you significance of the colours and what each shade means. You will also be shown various government buildings which are located around Jumhooree Maidhaan.

Male Fish Market & Local Market

Whether you enjoy shopping or are simply amused by the din, you will love the next part of the half day Male City walking tour . As you stroll along the harbour to the west, you will come across the island’s fish market. Bustling with eager shoppers, haggling traders and busy fishermen, the marketplace is full of excited voices and the strong smell of freshly caught sea fish.

You will then move on to the local market where you will be able to admire the variety of tropical fruits and vegetables. The pop of colour and delicious aromas will undoubtedly make you hungry. You will have some time here to chat with the Maldivian stall owners about their food and also relish some fresh produce and homemade sweet delicacies.

The final leg of this half day tour in The Maldives is a visit to the top of one of Male’s tallest buildings. Thanks to the rooftop vantage point, you will get to see all of the city from a bird’s eye view. You can take plenty of photos from up here. A group photo will be taken here against the city backdrop for keepsake.

Things to Keep in Mind during the Half Day Male City Walking Tour

Walking tours are always fun, more so when it is in a paradise like The Maldives. To ensure that your half day Male City walking tour is without any hiccups or unpleasant surprises, keep these pointers in mind:

  • You are advised to dress modestly since The Maldives is a Muslim country. As a general rule, shoulders and knees should be covered.
  • Carrying religious books that are contrary to Islam is prohibited in the country. Also, idols cannot be carried into this island. If found, such items are often confiscated or the tourists are asked to leave The Maldives.
  • The walking tour fee does not include the entry fee into the National Museum which is located inside the Sultan Park. While the entry charges for the park are paid for, you will have to take out your own tickets if you also wish to visit the museum.
  • This Maldives half day tour is ideal for those who like a personalized and intimate experience as the group size is capped at 8. This is to ensure that you don’t have to jostle for space or queue up for taking pictures during the walk.
  • While some snacks and a cup of black tea are included in the tour fee, if you wish to eat more at the Royal Garden Café, you can pay out of your own pocket.
  • The walking tour of Male lasts for four hours, but you need not worry about having to walk continuously. We will adjust the pace as per your walking speed, and provide for plenty of resting stops throughout.
  • Although the Male city walk passes by a lot of important landmarks such as the President’s Palace, and others, we will not have the time to enter each of those. Nevertheless, it is possible to admire the architectural aspects and the outer grandeur of these buildings.
  • The Male City walking tour operates under all weather conditions. As we will not cancel or reschedule your booking, you are advised to dress appropriately. Maldives’ weather , even though mostly sunny and warm, is sometimes rainy. It is better to carry an umbrella or a raincoat to be able to comfortably participate in the walk on a cloudy day.
  • If you wish to cancel your booking, you can do so only at least 24 hours before the tour date and time.

Your exploration of The Maldives does not have to end with this walking tour. You can explore more activities on this island or the other islands on other atolls. There are plenty of full day tours , half day tours , snorkelling tours and diving tours, photography trips, cooking classes, local dining experiences, sandbank tours , underwater environment conservation excursions, walking tours , yachting, sunset cruises, fishing trips and other interesting things to do in this island nation!

What to Expect

Your tour starts with an overview of Malé and the harbor area, a very important aspect of any island nation. Passing by the oldest school in the city, learn about the education system and why the Maldives has a 98% literacy rate. Visit Hukuru Miskiiy – Old Friday Mosque and the tomb of Abu-al- Barakaath and learn why the Maldives converted to Islam and how the Islamic faith underpins everyday life.

Stop for a refreshing cup of traditional black tea at a local cafe, a popular spot for locals. Find out the importance of betal nuts and try them for yourself! Stopping at the November 3rd Memorial, hear the story of how 8 brave military servicemen died in the protection of their country from a terrorist attack in 1988. Wander through Sultan Park, a reference to the time the Maldives was governed by a sultanate (entrance fee included) now developed into a peaceful oasis in the middle of the city.

Walking back towards the harbor area, pass by the Grand Friday Mosque and the Islamic Center, Malé’s famous architectural landmark, and onto Jumhooree Maiden – Independence Square. From here, learn the meaning of the Maldives national flag and pick out key government buildings.

Heading west along the harbor, visit the bustling fish market and the local market, where the sights, sounds, and smells will fill your senses. Chat with the local stallholders and taste tropical produce and homemade sweets.

Your guide will provide a selection of lunchtime restaurant options based on your tastes. Following lunch, jump into a taxi with your guide in order to reach the terminal where your ferry departs to Villimalé from.

The island, once a resort and also a prison, was ‘developed’ to assist with the ever-growing population of Malé. It offers the ideal escape from the ever-busy capital city. Wide, open streets, an abundance of greenery so unlike Malé, two local beaches, and a peaceful atmosphere.

Stepping off the ferry in Villimalé, you may not be stepping back in time but you will be able to understand and visualize how the city islands would have been prior to urban modernization. A 60-minute walking tour of the island will allow you to understand and appreciate the local way of city life, as well as learning how the local community together with NGO Save the Beach work to protect both their island and ocean environment.

Sample hedhika local savory snacks served with black tea and allow your taste buds to discover Maldivian flavors. Before returning to the ‘big city,’ we take time to sit back and relax in true Maldivian style and observe the hustle and bustle of the capital from afar.

Tripadvisor reviews.

Did the full day walking tour and had a lovely day with Shark. Definitely recommend this if you are going to spend a few days on the island – I’ve learnt quite abit about the history of the island, the prospective and the day to day life of the locals. Things I wouldn’t and couldn’t understand just by reading up or going around by myself. Loved the local lunch which was included in the package as well! I was alone as my husband was working and felt comfortable and safe throughout the tour too – thank you Shark and the SP team 😊

Alexandra C

I was very happy with my Malé and Villimale tour with Secret Paradise. Both Ruth and our guide Mash were incredibly helpful and friendly. Mash was extremely knowledgeable and took us on quite the adventure of the city of Malé and then of the small eco-island of Villimale where we got introduced to the Save the Beach project. We got picked up and dropped off at the airport. It certainly beats sitting in the airport the whole day. I couldn’t have spent a better last lay in the Maldives!

What a great day and adventure I had during my walking tour of Male with Secret Paradise. My tour guide (Zaff) was engaging and provided all sorts of anecdotes as we traversed the busy city. So many sites and stories behind those places. I really loved the way the tour flowed, pausing when needed and taking time to take in the beautiful sights and moving quickly when traversing the busy roads. Secret Paradise were very accommodating – changing my meeting times at the last minute. I highly recommend the tour with Secret Paradise, indeed, I recommend them for all your Maldives travels!

Zaff, my tour guide was excellent. He was very flexible to make best use of our time and the weather conditions and went out of his way to make the day as enjoyable and educational as possible

Great way to see this very small but very busy city. Guides were knowledgeable and we got far more out of the day than if we had explored on our own.

They helped create some context about the country beyond the resorts and snorkeling. Lunch was at a restaurant set in a lovely old Maldivian home. We then went to Villimale and met Bébé from Save the Beach, a Maldivian eco group that works to effect change

Archie joined us in Male proper, had a coffee and time flew by till the Friday prayer time. We soon ended up visiting Save the Beach NGO in Villimale. Bebe is very passionate about the initiative and very knowledgeable about the corals.
