Cruises and maritime travel experiences

Popular cruise destinations around the world.

Cruising has become a popular choice for many travelers around the world. The destinations offered by cruise lines can vary widely, and each one offers its own unique experience. Here are some noteworthy and popular locations worth exploring on a cruise:

  • Discover the Greek Islands on a Mediterranean Cruise
  • Explore rugged terrain and glaciers in Alaska
  • Egypt’s Nile River for cultural exploration
  • South America’s Amazon Rainforest on a riverboat tour, literal eco-tourism journey.
  • Experience The North Pole aboard an ice breaker ship or seeing the abundant wildlife of Galapagos islands of Ecuador.
  • The Caribbean Sea with white sandy beaches and beautiful sunsets or the Pacific Ocean cruising to Hawaii for an adventure.

Besides these well-known destinations, there are several other unique places to embark on a voyage which is lesser-known but provide memorable experiences. For example, visiting remote parts of Asia like; some Indonesian islands that have not been explored before or sailing around Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America.

History has shown us that cruising initially began as a transportation mode from one country to another; it was during this time that onboard entertainment was limited to ballroom dancing, shuffleboard, and pool access. With leisure tourism rising exponentially via vacations to Europe in 1867, companies like P&O formed reliable cruise services from Great Britain across the Atlantic into New York City providing luxury accommodations together with comfort – making cruising more than just transportation but rather once in a lifetime journey to remember.

Why settle for an ordinary cruise when you can embark on a death-defying adventure through pirate-infested waters?

Types of cruises available

To learn about the various ways in which you can embark on a cruising adventure, delve into this section on types of cruises available. Discover the different kinds of travel experiences that await you, including ocean cruises and river cruises.

Ocean cruises

Ocean voyages by cruise ships typically take travelers to a variety of destinations around the world. These types of cruises offer various entertainment options and onboard activities, as well as the chance to explore exotic ports of call.

The following are different types of ocean cruises:

  • Adventure: Ocean cruises are perfect for travelers who want an adventure with plenty of stops at various locations.
  • Luxury: These trips provide a lavish way to experience the open sea, complete with gourmet food and personalized service.
  • Themed: Themed ocean cruises offer specialized programming for passengers interested in particular topics or hobbies such as wellness, wine tasting, or food tours.
  • Expedition: For those looking for an educational addition, expedition-style ocean cruises cater to adventurous travelers who seek experiences in remote areas like Antarctica and other regions around the globe.
  • Family-Friendly: Ocean cruises designed especially for families provide endless excitement for children and parents alike. Enjoy water sports activities right on the ship!

In addition to these five types of ocean journeys, some trips also combine river cruising experiences where they offer extended itineraries through multiple waterways.

If you’re considering an ocean voyage soon, we suggest placing your emphasis on having fun while experiencing different cultures. Don’t be afraid to immerse yourself in new activities or customs. This will make your trip much more meaningful and memorable. Additionally, you can opt-in for onboard workshops or attend lectures hosted by different experts along this journey. This way, you will not only get ample exposure but learn something new too!

Why sail on the ocean when you can cruise down a river and pretend you’re a wealthy 19th century aristocrat?

River cruises

For those seeking a voyage on water, there are options beyond just the ocean. Waterways such as rivers offer a different perspective of the world, one that is quieter and more intimate. Here are four key points about this type of journey:

  • River cruises typically involve smaller ships that are able to navigate the narrow waterways. This allows for stops in smaller towns and villages not accessible by larger vessels.
  • Scenic views are often the main attraction of river cruises, with routes following some of the most picturesque rivers in the world, such as the Danube in Europe or the Mekong in Southeast Asia.
  • Food and drink are usually included in the ticket cost, with many river cruise lines offering locally sourced ingredients and wines from nearby vineyards.
  • These cruises often attract an older demographic looking for a more relaxed pace of travel.

It’s important to note that while river cruises may not offer as many onboard amenities as ocean cruises, they provide unique experiences that can’t be found anywhere else. Don’t miss out on seeing some of the world’s most stunning landscapes from a different vantage point – consider a river cruise for your next adventure on water.

Cruising: where you can gain weight, get drunk, and still call it a vacation.

Benefits of cruising

To explore the benefits of cruising, let’s talk about how it’s the perfect solution for those seeking an all-inclusive travel experience. With factors like convenience and ease of planning, it’s no wonder why cruising has become increasingly popular. Additionally, unique onboard experiences ensure that cruising offers much more than just transportation from one port to another.

All-inclusive nature of cruises

Cruises provide an all-encompassing experience, from gourmet meals to on-board entertainment. Passengers can relax and enjoy the journey without worrying about additional expenses. With no need to worry about expensive meals or transportation costs, passengers can sit back and indulge in the amenities provided.

For those who want the best value for their money, selecting an all-inclusive cruise is a no-brainer. The benefits go beyond just budget-friendly options. From unlimited drinks to access to exclusive facilities , passengers can explore new destinations while enjoying premium services.

Missing out on a dream-like vacation may sound daunting – take advantage of all-inclusive cruises while they’re available! Experience exotic locations like never before with the added convenience of total indulgence at your fingertips .

Planning a cruise is easier than navigating through a corn maze blindfolded, and with less chance of getting lost.

Convenience and ease of planning

Planning for a cruise is a hassle-free process that can be easily managed with online platforms meant exclusively for travel planning. It offers multiple accommodation options, onboard activities, and makes booking excursions fairly easy.

The convenience of cruising also lies in the fact that it provides an all-inclusive vacation package . From meals and room service to transportation and entertainment, everything is sorted out beforehand. This saves travelers from the stress of managing their itinerary.

Moreover, cruises offer a wide range of dining options catering to every palate, including vegetarian cuisine . They also provide several recreational facilities such as pools, game rooms, and fitness centers. Cruise ships are equipped with theaters and casinos to keep guests entertained throughout their stay.

Additionally, cruising offers the opportunity to visit multiple destinations in one trip without the hassle of packing and unpacking every day. One may experience different cultures and landscapes at each stopover without worrying about logistics.

Don’t miss out on the benefits of cruising and enhance your travel experience with a memorable journey across oceans! Who needs land when you can play mini golf and rock climb on the high seas? Cruising: where your vacation and your workout are one and the same.

Unique onboard experiences

One of the top draws of a cruise is the unparalleled and distinctive experiences that one can have onboard. The many opportunities for indulging in an array of activities and entertainment options keep guests engaged and satisfied throughout their voyage. From world-class dining, spas, shopping , to shows and performances from renowned artists, each activity strives to offer an unforgettable experience.

Apart from these classic pleasures, a massive variety of educational programs , such as cooking classes or language courses, create moments of growth that go beyond a typical vacation. Cruise lines often organize itineraries to showcase local cultures on board through dance performances, folklore demonstrations or art exhibits. For those seeking more adventure than leisure, thrill-seekers can opt for the high-tech simulations offered by the newest ships or extreme sports like rock-climbing and surfing on board .

Overall, cruising is an immersive experience that offers activities suited for all guests’ interests ranging from laid-back to exhilarating. Regardless of the duration of your trip, there is no shortage of novel experiences which are highly recommended to enjoy with friends and family alike.

Get ready to pack your bags and leave your worries behind, because this cruise is going to rock your boat (in a good way).

Preparing for a cruise

To prepare yourself for a fun-filled cruise experience, you need to equip yourself with important tips to help make your voyage memorable. With ‘Preparing for a Cruise’, we provide useful information on ‘Booking Tips’ and ‘Packing Essentials’ to ensure you are a step ahead of the game!

Booking tips

Booking Strategies for Planning a Memorable Cruise Experience

Book your enjoyable cruise journey in hassle-free with these booking tips:

  • Research, compare and choose from different cruise lines to match your preferences and budget .
  • Reserve your cabin early to secure the preferred location and avoid last-minute price hikes.
  • Consider package deals or group discounts that offer other amenities such as excursions, dining, and spa services.
  • Read the fine print of the ticket including port charges, taxes, and gratuities before confirming your reservation.

It’s imperative to ensure no bank holds on your credit card payment; otherwise, it may trigger fraud alerts .

Did You Know: According to a study by Statista, around 30 million passengers were estimated to travel on cruises worldwide in 2019 .

Don’t forget to pack your sunblock , unless you want to come back looking like a lobster who just got back from vacation.

Packing essentials

As you prepare for your upcoming cruise, it is crucial to have all the necessary essentials for a comfortable and stress-free trip. Here are some items that should make it into your luggage:

  • Wardrobe Essentials: Pack clothes according to the itinerary, but make sure to bring versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched. Comfortable shoes, sunscreen and swimsuits are also important.
  • Toiletries: Carry travel-sized essentials such as toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner in a toiletry bag. Also don’t forget medications, first aid kit and seasickness remedies.
  • Electronics: Pack camera, chargers and power banks in a waterproof bag along with relevant travel documents like passport copies.

In addition to packing these essentials, remember to check the luggage allowance on your cruise line’s website. Some cruise lines have weight or size restrictions on baggage. Plan ahead so that you don’t end up paying extra fees or leaving important items at home.

We suggest preparing a packing list before starting the process of packing. It’s essential because it will help you stay organized and ensure you don’t forget anything . Packing cubes can help keep things compartmentalized; hangers can create space in tight cabins. Ensure you pack a bag or carry-on for when you embark so that any necessary items are easily accessible.

By following these suggestions, your packing process will be swift and smooth leaving you with ample time to enjoy your trip without worry or inconvenience!

Get ready to bust some moves on the dance floor or bust out your wallet at the casino – either way, your bank account will be cruising for a bruising.

Who needs excursions when the onboard activities include a never-ending buffet and an all-you-can-drink bar?

Onboard activities and excursions

For those vacationing on a cruise ship, there are numerous recreational and excursion options available. Passengers can partake in onboard activities and excursions that are both engaging and fun.

  • Onboard activities: Cruise ships offer an array of onboard activities to engage passengers of all age groups. From swimming pools, casinos, game arcades, movie theaters to live music performances, dance classes, art exhibits and libraries, passenger can take their pick.
  • Excursions at ports: The cruising itinerary features inbound ports which tend to be tourist-friendly cities with good infrastructure to support different types of tours. Popular excursions include sightseeing tours around the city’s main landmarks or countryside escape options such as vineyards or sporting events.
  • Fitness facilities: Fitness centers come equipped with machines for cardio training and weight lifting as well as group fitness classes like yoga or Pilates.
  • Kid’s Clubs: Many cruises cater specifically to families with children through various onboard kid’s clubs tailored for supervised entertainment such as arts & crafts activities, talent shows and themed parties while parents enjoy some adult time.

It’s worth noting that many cruise lines offer unique twists when it comes to selecting onboard activities and excursions. Depending on the particular cruise line you choose there may be additional options such as cooking courses or high ropes courses that may not have been previously mentioned.

To enhance your experience further consider booking popular experiences from renowned tour companies as they often have the backing of tried/tested experiences done hundreds of times over offering tour guides who specialise local expertise giving you tangible value for your money. Similarly opting for fewer but quality excursions than many hurried ones may allow passengers not only more leisure time but also greater insight into regional attractions.

Remember, the most dangerous activity onboard is reading the safety instructions while you’re already sinking.

Safety and health considerations

To ensure your safety and wellbeing while cruising, it is important to consider the safety and health regulations. In order for you to have a comfortable and healthy cruising experience, understanding cruise ship safety regulations, common health concerns, and taking necessary precautions is crucial. Let’s take a closer look at these sub-sections and find out how you can prepare yourself for a safe and enjoyable cruise.

Cruise ship safety regulations

Safety regulations on board cruise ships are strictly enforced to ensure the safety and well-being of passengers and crew members. Adequate training is provided to all staff in emergency procedures, first aid, fire safety, and evacuation plans. Regular drills and inspections are conducted to guarantee that all systems are functioning correctly, and all necessary equipment is readily available in case of emergencies. Safety regulations also extend to the ship’s design, construction, and maintenance. From lifeboats to the ship’s hull, everything must meet specific safety standards.

In addition to adhering to established guidelines, many cruise ships have implemented further measures to enhance passenger safety. These may include providing electronic bracelets that allow parents to track their children’s whereabouts or using drones for search-and-rescue missions during an emergency. Some ships even carry additional medical supplies beyond what health regulations require.

It is important to note that while rare, accidents can still occur on a ship despite strict safety protocols. The most notable example is the capsizing of the Costa Concordia off Italy’s coast in 2012 resulting in 32 fatalities. As a result, more stringent safety regulations were introduced worldwide for cruise ships.

Safety on board cruise ships continues to evolve with changing technology and an increased emphasis on passenger comfort without sacrificing security. Nevertheless, it remains a top priority for the industry as they strive towards providing their guests with an unforgettable experience on safe voyages at sea.

Remember, an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but a health insurance policy keeps bankruptcy at bay.

Common health concerns and precautions

When it comes to maintaining safety and well-being, there are a plethora of common health concerns and precautions one must consider. It is important to be mindful of potential hazards in the workplace, such as uneven surfaces or machinery, and to take all appropriate measures to minimize risk. Furthermore, adequate protection must also be worn at all times, including helmets and protective gear for specific jobs. Additionally, it is important to maintain good hygiene practices to prevent the spread of illnesses among colleagues. In particular, frequent hand washing can help reduce transmission of germs in high-traffic areas like bathrooms and kitchens.

To ensure optimal health and safety standards are maintained on a daily basis, it is crucial that workers are made aware of any unique health concerns that may arise from working with hazardous materials or performing physically demanding tasks for extended periods. Employers should also provide education on proper lifting techniques and stretching exercises to avoid injuries. Additionally, regular check-ups with medical professionals can help identify early warning signs of diseases or chronic conditions that could impact one’s ability to perform work duties.

Pro Tip: Regular breaks are key for avoiding fatigue or burnout during long work days. Remember to hydrate regularly, eat healthy snacks throughout the day, and take time away from screens to recharge properly.

Who knew a relaxing cruise could also leave such a devastating environmental impact? Maybe it’s time to switch to paddle boats.

Environmental impact of cruises

To understand the environmental impact of cruises, explore sustainable cruising practices and recycling and waste management efforts as solutions. By taking steps towards sustainable cruising, you can help reduce the carbon footprint and preserve the beauty of the surrounding marine environments. Learn more about the importance of sustainability and efforts towards reducing waste in this section.

The importance of sustainable cruising practices

Sustainable practices have become crucial in the cruise industry due to increasing concerns about their environmental impact. Implementing eco-friendly measures can significantly reduce carbon emissions , decreased waste production, and preserve marine life. Measures such as renewable energy sources, wastewater treatment systems and reducing single-use plastics are commonly used by responsible cruise liners. By prioritizing sustainable practices, the industry can contribute to a cleaner and greener future.

As more people look to travel environmentally responsibly, sustainable cruising practices have become a top priority for cruise liners. The use of hybrid engines, solar panels and biofuels are just a few examples of how ships have significantly reduced their carbon footprint while at sea. Additionally, many companies have instilled stricter policies on resource consumption resulting in the usage of freshwater reduced nearly half.

Unique initiatives geared toward protecting marine wildlife and preserving natural habitats are also being undertaken by many cruise companies. Programs focused on conservation such as cleaning up beaches and limiting shoreline activity can prevent negative impacts on wildlife and ecosystems.

Through carrying out sustainable practices such as reducing fuel consumption or using alternative fuels in their vessels’ engines has led to significant success stories in the industry over time. An example is MSC Cruises that illustrates its commitment to sustainability through building ships with advanced environmental technologies; thus it reduces carbon footprints. Therefore It’s vital for global culture to embrace this green transition for our water bodies’ survival sake akin to improving eutrophication standards as well as nutrification rates .

The cruise ship may be recycling, but the ocean is still getting dumped on.

Recycling and waste management efforts

Efforts towards Resource Management on Cruise Ships

Cruise ships are accountable for significant environmental damage, particularly with regards to waste disposal and fuel emissions. Nonetheless, in the last few years, recycling and resource management efforts have gained momentum within the industry.

  • Recycling and waste management measures have been implemented onboard cruise ships as a way of lessening their negative impact on the environment.
  • Solid waste is separated into various categories such as food, glass, metals, paper, and plastics.
  • The majority of recyclable materials are disposed of when the ship reaches shore as most ports can handle such materials.
  • Cruise ships have initiated partnerships with vendors that use reprocessed products in a bid to reduce their carbon footprint.

In addition to these measures, some cruise companies have started considering more sustainable options like utilizing biodegradable or compostable packaging for their onboard foodservice.

Discussions about resource usage on these large vessels must also include water conservation. In recent years some multibillion-dollar liners recycle wastewater through treatment plants or utilize new purification technology which means less overall water waste.

As cruise operators pledge to retain a positive public image there has been calls by green organizations demanding more transparency regarding how each fleet is dealing with their ecological impact.

It was not long ago that little concern was shown towards eco-friendly practices aboard large-scale vessels that navigated our seas. It’s essential we recognize the changes being made to help reduce environmental degradation, however insufficient they may be currently meeting consumer demand for greater sustainability considerations as responsible eco-friendly travel gains prominence.

With cruise ships getting bigger and bigger, the only way to truly ‘sail into the sunset’ is by creating an environmental disaster behind you.

Future of cruising

To envision the future of cruising with a focus on innovative technology to enhance the overall cruising experience, this section explores the advancements and their impact on the cruise industry. Delve deeper into the potential growth and evolution of the industry, along with how technology has transformed travelers’ experiences, as we examine the impact of technology on cruising experiences.

Impact of technology on cruising experiences

The application of technology in the cruising industry has truly revolutionized the way passengers experience cruises. Incorporation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) has resulted in an unprecedented level of personalization and convenience.

AI-powered systems can rapidly predict passenger preferences, offering a more personalized service. The IoT makes it possible for passengers to connect with devices on-board, streamlining transactions such as ordering meals or booking activities.

The use of Virtual Reality (VR) technology is also set to transform cruising experiences by providing immersive entertainment options for passengers. With headphones and VR headsets, passengers can now enjoy 3D movies and shows from anywhere in the ship without leaving the cabin.

This technological development is not only improving passenger experience but also optimizing cruise ship operations. Smart automation systems have simplified processes such as docking, navigation and maintenance, reducing the likelihood of human error.

Furthermore, these technological advancements are making cruising more accessible to people with disabilities through tools like virtual assistants, robots and usage of smart sensors.

In recent years, these technological advances have shown exceptional benefit to shipping companies such as Royal Caribbean International who recently used AI-driven thermal cameras to detect fever-like symptoms potentially signaling a case of Covid-19 among passengers who were then quarantined immediately.

Cruising has a bright future ahead – unless the robots decide to take over and turn us all into obedient passengers.

Potential growth and evolution of the industry.

The cruising industry is poised for remarkable growth and transformation in the coming years. With increasing technological advancements, passenger demographics, and changing preferences towards travel, there are significant opportunities for the industry to expand its offerings.

Innovation in environmental sustainability is a key component of the industry’s evolution. Developments such as greener propulsion systems, waste management solutions, and renewable energy sources will become increasingly relevant as consumers become more environmentally conscious.

Additionally, there is immense potential in incorporating digital technologies into cruise experiences. From personalized itineraries to advanced safety measures, technology can add value to every aspect of the cruising cycle, including booking, boarding, on-board activities & entertainment, shore excursions & transportation services.

Emphasizing onboarding of new demographics such as youthful travelers is another critical step towards the future growth of the cruising industry. Millennials’ travel preferences are vastly different from past generations in terms of both itinerary choice and preferred activities. Cruise lines who understand these preferences and cater accordingly will be leaders in this area.

All those interested in incredible oceanic vistas should book a cruise before this titanic industry transitions completely to embrace technological innovation providing comfort with eco-friendly values along with extraordinary customer experience. Don’t miss out; future-proof your vacation!

Maritime Travel

Maritime Travel Inc. began with a single storefront, called  Maritime Travel , in 1949. Since then, we’ve become the largest independent travel agency in Canada. Today, our retail operations consist of over 100 locations from coast to coast with 13 locations branded LeGrow’s Travel in Newfoundland and Labrador, several branded Voyages Maritime in Quebec and Northern New Brunswick and the remainder branded Maritime Travel right across the country. Combined, our retail operations generate annual sales of over $350 million and employ over 500 people.

On May 16, 2002, we changed our name from Maritime Marlin Travel to Maritime Travel. When we originally affiliated with Marlin Travel in 1986 to provide our customers with a national network, we gained the ability to use the “Marlin” name within Atlantic Canada. This affiliation served us well for many years. However, with our acquisition of The Bay Travel in 2002, now Maritime Travel @ the Bay giving us locations nationwide, we no longer needed this affiliation to meet customers’ needs across Canada. Maritime Travel better reflects who we are – a Maritime-owned and headquartered company with a truly national reach.

In December 2009, the company hired 36 senior travel counsellors who had been with BCAA Travel prior to BCAA closing its travel operations.  Between 2009 and 2013, there were numerous acquisitions in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario, including ATCO Travel in the fall of 2010.

Maritime Travel Inc. is also committed to staying one step ahead of our competition in the ever-changing travel industry. We believe that good people are particularly critical to our ongoing success. Hiring the best staff and providing them with attractive compensation packages and benefits has helped us to build and maintain a highly educated and experienced team of experts. In fact, many of our staff have been with us for over 10 years. Maritime Travel Inc. also provides extensive training programs for all our staff, and we continuously invest in leading-edge technology to stay competitive. Many of the technology solutions we have incorporated have had a significant impact on all aspects of our service, from operational efficiencies in the retail shops to innovative solutions for our business travellers, like online booking tools.

Recognized for its leadership and employee satisfaction, Maritime Travel has been named one of the Top 20 Best Employers in Canada for 2020 by Kincentric in its annual study. The country’s premier benchmark for excellent workplaces, The Best Employers in Canada program publicly recognizes organizations that have created great work environments. It’s the 11th consecutive award for Maritime Travel. Maritime Travel has been recognized as one of Canada’s Best Managed Platinum Club for 17 consecutive years. Prior to that, it had been named one of Canada’s Best Managed companies since 1998.

Maritime Travel Inc. is a fully integrated travel company specializing in all aspects of travel, including developing, packaging, marketing, and distributing travel products and services.

Air Charters

Operating since 1999,  Maritime Travel Air Charters  offers a convenient, often cost-efficient charter service for our clients. This gives our clients — with two or more persons traveling — significant opportunities to save money and time, all with the added freedom of flying on their own schedule.

Air Consolidation

Launched in 1999, Discount Air serves as an internal consolidator for our retail network, sourcing international fares that are far more competitive than scheduled fares. This means huge savings for our customers. Sourcing and negotiating the availability of attractive fares is the greatest challenge faced by most agents. By providing an in-house service with fares online, Maritime Travel Inc.’s retail operations enjoy a significant competitive advantage.

Business Travel Management

Maritime Travel Inc.’s Business Travel Management operations offer business travel services and products to companies of all sizes. Operating under the Maritime and LeGrow’s brands, we service over 25 per cent of all business travel accounts in Atlantic Canada. Our leading-edge e-commerce Travel Smart Suite of products and “Confirmed” Business Travel Program are two of the many exclusive services we offer our customers.

Inbound Services

Maritime Travel Cruise Services began as a small ground-handling company, servicing cruise ships arriving at Cape Breton Island. Today, Maritime Travel Cruise Services has expanded its service throughout Atlantic Canada, providing ground-handling services for companies such as Holland America and Princess Cruises, among others.

Maritime Travel Conventions

Maritime Travel purchased Convention Connections, now known as  Maritime Travel Conventions , as part of the acquisition of Atlantic American Express operations in November of 2005. This division has been in business for ten years, coordinating inbound convention services for organizations around the world. The services include negotiating and managing hotel room blocks, as well as coordinating flights and event planning.

Meetings and Incentives

Maritime Travel Meetings & Incentives  provides organizations with professional consulting and coordination of meetings, conventions and incentive programs. Companies face continuous operational challenges, such as building and maintaining morale, keeping staff turnover down and motivating their teams, all of which can be addressed with a well-planned and executed incentive program. The Maritime Meetings & Incentives team has broad expertise in developing meetings and incentive programs, from delivering client incentive trips hosted by our own president to developing incentives that can be driven or serviced from our regional branch network.

Retail Travel

Maritime Travel Inc. operates over 100 retail locations across the country under the brands, Maritime Travel, LeGrow’s Travel, Airline Reservation Center, and Maritime Travel at The Bay. Our retail operations offer vacation travel services and products through all three distribution channels: travel agencies, a national call center and Internet sites. Our size and market share have allowed us to develop exclusive products and services, such as our Maritime Travel Insurance and Exclusive Payment Options.

Wholesale Operations

Launched in 1999, Holiday Escapes (formerly Maritime Holidays) continues to expand its programs and destinations. Holiday Escapes has made considerable investments in software that allows our agents to book online while giving our branch network access to products that sometimes are exclusive, yet always the best price for our customers.

Port of Seattle outage continues two days after suspected cyberattack by ‘nefarious characters’

M ore than two days after the Port of Seattle identified a potential cyberattack, an outage continues to impact operations at Sea-Tac Airport and other Port-affiliated entities.

Port officials haven’t discussed details of the attack, and there’s no estimated time for return.

“We saw some nefarious characters that may have been on our system early in the morning on Saturday,” said Perry Cooper, senior media relations manager for the Port of Seattle, at a press conference Monday. “We actually turned off our entire system to avoid anything further.”

The outage is not impacting security screenings at Sea-Tac Airport and there were just seven flight cancellations Monday .

However, in-airport WiFi is not working, baggage services are disrupted, and some airlines are providing manual bag tags. Many TV screens showing flight info and security line wait times are blacked out.

Cruise travel is not impacted, but the Port’s Maritime Facilities phone systems were down. Email and phone services for Port staff were also down, and the Port of Seattle website is inaccessible.

The Port is providing updates at this webpage .

Here’s what else you need to know about the outage.

What happened?

The Port first  reported  the outage Saturday morning just after 9 a.m. PT, describing it as an “internet and web systems outage.” A few hours later, Sea-Tac Airport said the outage was due to a “possible cyberattack.”

Beyond that, it’s not clear who is behind the attack or how they accessed the Port’s technical infrastructure.

“We’re still working on analysis and recovery at this point, and hope to learn more in the future,” Cooper said.

Is TSA impacted?

No. The Transportation Security Administration runs on its own dedicated network, and was not impacted by the outage. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection said its systems were not impacted.

I’m flying through Sea-Tac Airport. What should I know?

Airport officials suggest sticking to carry on. If you have to check luggage, try to arrive early — especially if you’re flying Frontier, Spirit, Sun Country, JetBlue, and international airlines.

Those airlines use common check-in space and rely on the Port’s technical infrastructure for checking in bags, which is why they are more impacted by the outage.

Some international carriers are bringing in their own technical equipment to help the get through the outage, Cooper said.

What else is impacted at the airport?

The airport’s baggage conveyor belt system is also affected, which can cause delays in getting luggage to the right plane, Cooper said.

The airport’s lost-and-found center is closed, and its SEA Visitor Pass Program is not working.

The airport’s car parking system is also affected.

TSA said all passengers are verified by its own secure system and are then issued boarding passes.

When will the outage be fixed?

Officials haven’t talked about the severity of the incident, or when they expect things to be back and running. The Port is working with the FBI and other partners on the investigation.

Wasn’t there an outage at Sea-Tac Airport recently?

Last month, a flawed update from cybersecurity software company CrowdStrike  caused a global IT disruption , including at Sea-Tac and airports across the country. The incident impacted airlines — not Sea-Tac Airport itself. And it was not caused by a cyberattack.

What makes a Port or an airport an attractive target for hackers?

There is heightened concern about cyber threats to ports and other critical infrastructure, according to cybersecurity experts we interviewed . The hackers are typically criminal enterprises and nation-states. The data within port infrastructure can be valuable — passenger information, cargo manifests, etc. — and can be sold on the “ dark web ” for a large profit. In ransomware attacks, targets are often forced to pay ransoms.

The Biden Administration in February issued an executive order to bolster the security of maritime critical infrastructure.

What’s next?

The Port is providing updates at this webpage and its social media accounts, including @flySEA and @PortofSeattle .

There is no impact to The Northwest Seaport Alliance’s maritime operations, according to a spokesperson.

The Port provided phone numbers to call for urgent martime-related matters:

  • Recreational boating at (206) 601-4089 or VHF Channel 17
  • Fishermen’s Terminal at (206) 617-4898
  • Bell Harbor at (206) 462-9567
  • Marine Maintenance at (206) 556-1678
  • For Terminal 91 operations, call (206) 605-8152. If the call is not answered, leave a voicemail and then call the number again within 5 minutes.

Editor’s note: This story was updated with details about the CrowdStrike incident and the Northwest Seaport Alliance’s maritime operations.

The Port of Seattle has been hit by a suspected cyber-attack, heavily disrupting airport and maritime services in the city ahead of Labor Day.

The ongoing IT outage , which started on August 24, has led to significant delays to the check-in process at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), with no Wi-Fi currently available and display screens not working.

Additionally, certain airport programs and services, such as SEA Visitor Pass and the Airport Lost and Found, are currently unavailable.

Passengers are advised to get their mobile boarding pass and check baggage before they arrive at the airport to speed up the check-in process.

The Port said there are “indications” the outages have been caused by a cyber-attack.

Frontier, Spirit, Sun Country, JetBlue and International Airlines are particularly affected.

The Port of Seattle’s website is currently down, and baggage and flight information cannot be accessed on the SEA apps.

Port of Seattle Maritime Facilities phone systems are also down as part of the system outage, although Cruise ship services are operating as normal.

The incident is impacting early Labor Day travel, with the US public holiday taking place on September 2.

In a press conference on August 26, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Federal Security Director for Washington, Greg Hawko, emphasized that the security of the travelling public has not been impacted by the incident. The SEA continues to screen and check passengers and baggage effectively.

Critical Systems Isolated, No Estimated Recovery Time

The local government agency first reported “an internet and web systems outage” on August 24 at 09.45 PDT.

Shortly after, at 13.30 PDT, the Port said the outages to certain systems indicated a possible cyber-attack and critical systems had been isolated.

In the August 26 update, the Port of Seattle said it is in the process of working to restore the SEA to full service. However, there is currently no estimated time for return.
