MICROCHIPPING

Dogs and cats must be microchipped in order to obtain a pet passport Malaysia. It is also a requirement for entering most countries. No other pet species require microchips when traveling to Malaysia.

A microchip is a permanent method of electronic identification. The chip is around the size of a grain of rice – and is implanted just under your pet’s skin between its shoulder blades. Each chip has a unique number that is detected using a microchip scanner.

Not only is it a requirement to enter Malaysia with a pet, it is highly recommended your pet is microchipped. This is because if you were to lose your pet while, a microchip makes it far more likely that you will be reunited.

We recommend that microchipping your pet is the first step in the process of obtaining a Malaysian pet passport. This is because in many countries your pet’s rabies vaccination won’t be valid unless your pet is microchipped first.

Not all countries require pets to have microchips fitted before traveling, however most of them do. It is also highly recommended for all pets to increase the likelihood you are your pet being reunited if lost.

Quarantine is NOT required if:

  • You are traveling from Brunei Darussalam, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore or the United Kingdom; AND
  • Your pet was born there or at least there for the 6 months prior to entering Malaysia.

If your pet is entering Malaysia from any other country, your pet will be placed in quarantine. Your pet will be released straight away if it is found to be free of any sign of infection. Flying into Malaysia with a pet

Whether you are flying with your pet or it will be flying without you, it is important to choose an airline that serves the entire route from beginning to end. Before selecting an airline you will need to check their pet policies to ensure that they will allow your pet to fly. Will the airline allow your dog or cat to fly in the cabin with you? What are the restrictions? Will your pet need to travel in the cargo hold? Another option for airline pet travel is by private charter. Although this is more expensive than commercial airlines, pets will fly in the cabin with their owners in luxury, regardless of their size.

BEFORE YOU FLY

There is no restriction on the number of domesticated pets you can import – luckily there is no restriction on the number of pets you import, as long as that number is permitted at your specific residency.

Book your flight into an approved port of entry – pet animals can only enter Malaysia through the ports of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Senai International Airport in Jahore, Labuan International Airport Labuan F.T. or Bayan Lepas International Airport in Penang.

Reservations for quarantine must be made – you must reserve your pet’s slot at least 2 weeks in advance as quarantine facilities are often full.

Ensure you have the correct carrier – pets are required to travel in an appropriate cage according to its size and weight if travelling as freight. The requirements will differ depending on your airline, and whether your pet will travel in the cabin or the cargo. Generally, only dogs and cats weighing less than 5 kg can travel in the cabin in an agreed bag (depending on your airline). Carriers and crates must be leak proof.

ONCE YOU LAND

Clinical examination and document check – after arrival you will need to bring the your pet, along with the original health documents, to the Quarantine Station. The quarantine officer will verify your pet’s veterinary health certificate and vaccination records. Additionally, your pet will have a clinical examination/quarantine observation to ensure your pet is healthy and disease free. The animal/(s) will be examined clinically at the Quarantine Station for issuing Provisional Quarantine Clearance Certificate.

If the dog or cat is/are free from any clinical illness as well as the documents including veterinary certificate/ vaccination records are found in order, quarantine isn’t usually required. However, if the pet is detected with any signs of clinical illness during inspection, then they will be placed in quarantine.

FLIGHT OPTIONS

Accompanied cargo / in the cabin – generally, small inoffensive domestic pets such as dogs, cats and birds, accompanied by valid Health and Rabies vaccination certificates, will be accepted on domestic flights in the cabin or in cargo hold at owner’s risk and subject to requirements of the carrier. This is usually not an option for international flights, however it differs between airlines.

Manifest cargo – manifest cargo is a system wherein the import of pet is done using the airline cargo. If the pet is being transported in this manner, the documents must include of copy of the passport of the owner/caretaker, a copy of the owner/caretaker’s e-ticket and a copy of the air way bill.

What airlines allow flying a pets to Malaysia?

Most airlines allow flying pets to Malaysia. However, depending on the airline you fly with, pet policies differ.

When flying with a pet, it’s important to check airline pet policies before booking any travel. Different airline’s have different rules for flying with pets, including which breeds are allowed, the size and weight of pets that are permitted, and the number of pets they allow. Fees also vary between airlines.

Most airlines will allow pets to fly in the cargo section of their planes, in a climate controlled, comfortable pet zone. Although some pet owners think this will be stressful for their pets, it can actually be a lot calmer than flying in the cabin.

Some airlines will allow pets to fly in the cabin with their owners, but generally only small dogs and cats that weigh under 8kg are permitted. This is because they must fly inside an airline-approved carrier that fits under the seat in front of their owners.

Malaysian Airlines allows pets to fly on both domestic and regional flights. Just like with excess baggage, the fee will be calculated depending on the zone you are flying to and weight (pet and carrier combined):

*Zone 1 : Malaysia (Peninsular, Sabah & Sarawak). Zone 2 : Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia (Denpasar, Surabaya, Kuala Namu), Myanmar, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam. Zone 3 : India, Indonesia (Jakarta), Japan, Republic of Korea, Nepal, Sri Lanka. Zone 4 : Australia, New Zealand. Zone 5 : United Kingdom.

Guidelines for Pet Carriers

If you are flying to Malaysia with a pet, it is important that you use a pet carrier that is approved by your airline. Different airlines have different pet carrier policies, which often vary between aircrafts and routes. Check that your pet carrier is approved for your chosen airline, aircraft and route.

The rules and regulations have been set out by International Air Transport Association (IATA) ensure that dogs are comfortable when travelling. Thus, inside their travel carriers, pets must be able to stand up, turn around and lie down in a natural position in their kennel (without touching any side or the top of the container).

iata carrier guidelines

Furthermore, the rules for pet carriers also vary depending on whether your pet will be flying in the cabin or cargo area of the plane.

If you are travelling in the cabin with your dog or cat, then you will need to ensure that the carrier fits under the seat in front of you. This is why, generally, only small dogs and cats weighing under 7-8kg are permitted in the cabin.

Additionally, if traveling with a dog, airlines often require that he or she is be obedient to your commands and can behave appropriately in public. Thus, he mustn’t bark or growl at other passengers or staff. If your dog does not behave in an appropriate manner, some airlines may transfer him to the cargo hold at an additional cost, or refuse to transport him all together. Some airlines require a consent form to ensure your pet is flight-ready.

MOST AIRLINES ONLY ACCEPT CAGES THAT COMPLY WITH THE FOLLOWING IATA REGULATIONS:

  • The cage must not have wheels
  • It must have a solid roof
  • The screws and nuts that hold the lower and upper parts of the cage must be properly installed and tightened – because yes, the cage must consist of two sections, made of solid and rigid plastic
  • The cage must also include bowls firmly attached to its lower wall containing food and water
  • It must be clean, but also and above all waterproof and covered with materials capable of absorbing liquid materials
  • It must be well ventilated, with openings in all 4 sides of the cage
  • The cage must also be properly closed, using a lock that cannot be opened from the inside
  • Finally, it must bear a label distinguishing the top from the bottom and another indicating that the cage contains a live animal

  • The veterinary clinic that you visit
  • The species of your pet
  • Whether your pet already has a microchip and rabies vaccination

Firstly, different countries and veterinary clinics will have different prices for veterinary treatments and vaccinations. If you want to save some money, check the prices of a few different veterinary clinics.

Furthermore, different countries have different requirements for importing pets.

Additionally, some pets species may require more treatments and vaccines than others. For example, dogs require more vaccinations than cats, when traveling to the Malaysia. Alternatively, rodents, rabbits, reptiles and amphibians do not require any vaccinations.

If your pet already has a microchip, and a recent rabies vaccination, you will probably pay less for your Malaysian pet passport. Generally, a microchip and rabies vaccination both costs between $20-60 each, in the USA.

The cost of getting a Malaysia Pet Passport is broken down into the following (USD – pet dog or cat):

  • Microchipping – $20-50
  • Rabies vaccination – $20-50
  • Health certificate – $25-150
  • Parasite treatment – $3-15
  • Pet air ticket – $1000-4000 (depends where you are traveling from and the weight/size of your pet)
  • Pet crate – $20-100+
  • Malaysian pet passport application – RM 7-9 / $1.80-2.25 (depending on pet species)

How long does it take to get a Pet Passport Malaysia?

Generally, it will only take around 3 days to obtain a pet passport Malaysia to import a pet into Malaysia .

Getting your pet’s microchip, vaccinations and health certificate shouldn’t take long, just a quick appointment at the vet. However, you will need to wait at least 30 days after getting your pet’s rabies vaccination, before you can enter Malaysia.

Furthermore, you will need to apply for a import license, which can be obtained in person in Malaysia or online by either an agent or the owner.

To save time, when making an appointment be sure to advise the veterinarian staff that you want to get a pet passport. This will ensure that they have everything required in stock and will allow them time to prepare.

To export a pet from Malaysia , it may take you longer than a day to get your complete pet passport.

Different countries have different requirements for importation of pets, so the time depends on where you are traveling to. For example, if you are traveling to a country that requires a rabies titer test (rabies blood test), the process will take longer. In these cases, you should allow yourself at least 4 months to prepare. This is because you must wait 30 days after your pet’s rabies vaccination to have their blood sample taken. Once you have your results back, you must then wait an additional 3 months before your pet is permitted to travel.

Give your veterinary clinic a call to confirm roughly how long it will take them based on where you are going.

Malaysia is listed as an non-EU listed country, which means they accept EU Pet Passports. You will just require additional documents, such as parasite treatment certificates, additional vaccinations and an import permit.

Yes, however they must be older than 4 months old. Dogs and cats under the age of 3 months are not permitted to enter Malaysia. Additionally, your dog or cat will need a rabies vaccination, after which you will need to wait 30 days before entering Malysia.

All pets will need to have their health checked at the quarantine facilities, unless you are traveling from Brunei Darussalam, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore or the United Kingdom, and your pet was born there or at least there for the 6 months prior to entering Malaysia.

All you need to know about bringing your pet dog or cat to Malaysia

Malaysia is a favourite tourist destination and a beautiful country to be a pet parent. Dogs and cats are welcomed in Malaysia, and the vibrant community has many exciting activities for you and your pet.

If you are planning to travel to Malaysia with your pet, there are several steps to the process. Certain breeds of dogs are not allowed, and your pet needs to fulfil all the pet import regulations to be allowed to travel into the country. Here’s what you should know about pet travel to Malaysia:

Microchip your pet

Microchips are essential to international travel; they help identify your pet correctly and are of great help if your pet goes missing, or is lost.

All pets travelling to Malaysia must be implanted with an ISO compliant microchip. After implanting the microchip, remember to record the microchip number correctly in all your pet’s records.

Vaccinations and blood tests

Pets travelling to Malaysia must be vaccinated against rabies with an approved anti-rabies vaccine between 30 days and 12 months before the date of travel. If your pet is flying from Australia, they will not need a rabies vaccine if they have been living in Australia for more than six months before the date of journey.

Dogs travelling to Malaysia must be vaccinated for the following diseases: canine adenovirus type 2, canine distemper, canine parainfluenza, and canine parvovirus. Cats must be immunised against Chlamydia psittaci, feline panleukopenia, feline calicivirus and feline rhinotracheitis. The vaccinations must be given at least 12 months before the date of travel and recorded in the health certificate with the microchip number.

Dogs and cats flying in from Australia must be tested for Hendra Virus using the Serum Neutralisation Test (SNT) at dilution 1 in 2 with negative results. The test must be done within 14 days of export.

External and internal parasite treatments

Pet dogs and cats must be treated for external and internal parasites between two and seven days of export. The internal parasite treatment must target both cestodes and nematodes, and the external treatment should exterminate all fleas and ticks from your pet.

Make sure your vet makes a note of the name of the drug, active ingredients and date of treatment in your pet’s documents.

Import permit and veterinary health certificate

To enter Malaysia, you will need to apply for an import permit issued by the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (MAQIS). If you are flying in a pet dog to Malaysia, check that your dog is not on the list of restricted and banned breeds. You can apply for the import permit online, or a pet travel agent can do it on your behalf. This permit is valid for 30 days from the date of issue.

Your pet will also need a pet passport or veterinary health certificate that has a record of all the vaccinations and treatments received by the pet before flying. It must contain a description of the pet and the microchip number for easy identification. The veterinary health certificate must be issued by a registered veterinary officer recognised by the government veterinary authority of the country of origin.

The health certificate should state that the pet has been examined by a registered vet not more than seven days before the date of journey, and has shown no clinical signs of ill health.

Banned and restricted dog breeds

Malaysia has banned the entry of some aggressive and dangerous dog breeds. Before transporting your pet dog into Malaysia, make sure your dog is not the list of banned breeds. These dog breeds are on the no-import list and cannot travel to Malaysia.

  • American Bulldog
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Brasileiro
  • Japanese Tosa
  • Neapolitan Mastiff
  • Pit Bull Terrier (American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Bull Terrier)

Some dog breeds are on the restricted breed list and are allowed into the country, provided the dog meets specific import conditions. Restricted dog breeds are:

  • Bull Mastiff
  • Bull Terrier
  • German Shepherd / Alsatian / Belgian Shepherd / East European Shepherd
  • Perro de Presa Canario (Canary Dog)

Restricted dog breeds are allowed entry into Malaysia only after the dog gets approval from the Director-General of Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services. You will have to request permission before applying for the import permit. The conditions for approval are:

  • Your dog must not be younger than three months of age
  • Your dog must have a pedigree certificate issued by an approved organisation in the country of origin
  • Your dog should be implanted with an ISO-compliant microchip, and the microchip details must be recorded on the pedigree certificate
  • The name and address of the importer responsible for the dog must be mentioned in the application
  • The home where the dog will reside in Malaysia will be inspected by the Director to verify that the dog will be safe and well cared. The Director will assess the size of the residence, the kennel, the compound and safety and control of the dog before approving.
  • A written declaration from the importer must accompany the pet stating that your dog is a personal pet and not intended for sale. Your dog must be kept secured within your compound at all times and kept on a lead and muzzle when he or she is in public places. Your dog has to be under the control of a trained and skilled handler at all times.

Pet quarantine in Malaysia

Pets flying in from United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, Japan, Brunei, Sweden and Singapore are not required to be quarantined provided they are healthy on arrival and have fulfilled all import conditions.

Pet dogs and cats travelling to Malaysia from Australia will be subject to quarantine of not less than ten days if all other import parameters are met. If your pet is travelling from Thailand, they will be quarantined for 14 days.

Dogs and cats will be inspected by a quarantine official on arrival and placed in an approved quarantine facility. They will be released after their mandatory quarantine if they found to be healthy and free of any diseases. The quarantine period can be extended up to six months if your pet dog or cat does not fulfil import regulations.

What You Need to Know Before Bringing Your Dog to Malaysia

ExpatGo Freelancers

This article was written by Jennifer Dawson.

Relocating your pet to another country is never easy. But if you’re planning on settling in Malaysia, you can take comfort in the fact that your home-to-be is generally a pet-friendly one. Dogs are among the  most popular pets in Malaysia , where it’s not unusual to see several pet owners walking their dogs in the evening. And with organizations like  PAWS and SPCA encouraging pet adoption , the number of pet-owning households in Malaysia is increasing every year. However, it has to be noted there are certain state bylaws in place that prohibit pets in high rise buildings such as condos and flats.

pet travel to malaysia

How To Bring Your Dog To Malaysia

First of all, you have to check if your dog is one of the prohibited breeds in Malaysia. Certain dog breeds (like the American Pit Bull and Pit Bull Terrier) aren’t allowed in the country, so double-check before starting the process. To bring your dog to Malaysia, you’ll need to get your pet  microchipped, dewormed, and vaccinated . You’ll also need an import permit, which you can get online or through an agent. It is highly recommended you go through a well-experienced agency like PetAir Malaysia.

And unless you’re travelling from the UK, Ireland, Sweden, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Brunei, or Singapore, your pet will also need to be quarantined for a minimum of seven days. The Kuala Lumpur quarantine facility is clean and safe, but do check in on your pet during the quarantine period’s visiting hours.

Flying With Your Pooch

Not all airlines will allow dogs to fly in cargo, so make sure to double check with the airline before booking your ticket. Try to look for airlines that allow dogs in the cabin , as this will make the experience much more pleasant for you and your dog. Consider getting natural calming aids that will help your dog relax and prevent your pet from acting out during the flight.

On Dogs And Malaysian Culture

pet travel to malaysia

Plenty of Malaysians love dogs. Malaysia has dog-friendly condos, dog parks, dog cafes, and more. The country even has  dog psychologists and acupuncture specialists ! But it’s also important to note that Malaysia has a large Muslim population, and because traditional Islamic teachings discourage keeping dogs as pets, dogs aren’t allowed in many public areas. Today, many Malaysian Muslims keep dogs as pets in Malaysia, but it’s still better to err on the side of caution and be sensitive to the local culture.

When looking for a place to stay, look for somewhere that’s close to a dog-friendly park, or one with a garden your dog can access. Make sure to check if a place is dog-friendly before bringing your pet, especially if you’re in a predominantly Muslim community. If you want to be able to move around more freely with your pet, consider moving to a predominantly Chinese area, where you’re more likely to find more dog-friendly establishments.

If you’re a new graduate who’s still uncertain about your professional life, your dog can even help you build your network. Just look for community activities like puppy play dates, which won’t just let your pup socialize with other dogs, but help you meet people in the area. Moving to a new country can be daunting, so having your pup by your side can make a world of a difference.

Depending on your country of origin, your pet may require a quarantine period upon arrival in Malaysia. Check the specific quarantine regulations applicable to your pet.

Also most airlines offer pet transport services, but it’s essential to check their pet policies and restrictions beforehand. Ensure your pet has a suitable travel crate that meets the airline’s requirements.

All you need to know about flying with your pet | Pet-friendly airline Malaysia

pet travel to malaysia

✈️ Are you travelling soon?

Table of content, ‍ all you need to know about flying with your pet | pet-friendly airline malaysia.

Thinking of traveling the world with your furbabies? Here’s what you need to do and prepare to travel with Malaysia Airlines – a pet-friendly airline.

Pet Policy for Malaysia Airlines

Before flying, here are the rules and regulations that paw parents need to abide by.

  • What kinds of transportation does Malaysia Airlines offer? ‍

In a temperature- and pressure-controlled compartment of your flight as checked luggage.

  • Can I check my pet in as checked baggage? ‍

Pets that match the requirements below are allowed to travel as checked baggage:

  • There can only be domesticated animals, like cats, dogs, and fish.
  • The crate must meet all requirements
  • Documents needed to travel to your destination
  • What are the costs involved with transporting pets? ‍

Fees are depending on weight and are comparable to excess baggage fees. Rates and tariffs for the import and export of animals are as below:

For further information, you may get in touch with Malaysia Airlines directly.

  • What specifications apply to the crate? ‍

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Malaysia Airlines demand that the crate meet the following criteria in addition to the size and weight limits:

  • Your pets must be able to stand, turn around, and lay comfortably inside the pet crate. For most airlines that allow brachycephalic breeds (snub-nosed dogs) to fly in cargo, they will need a size larger than usual.
  • Fiberglass, metal, stiff plastics, welded metal mesh, solid wood, or plywood must be used to make the crate (note that not all airlines will accept crates made of wood, e.g. Air France and KLM)
  • On the long side of the crate, there must be handles or space bars for handling.
  • The door of the container must have a reliable, spring-loaded locking system that extends at least 1.6 cm (5/8 in) over the door's horizontal extrusions above and below. A pet cannot bend doors; they must be made of hard plastic, a metal that has been cast or welded, or both. To prevent your pet from suffering any harm, the door needs to be paw- and nose-proof.
  • Bowls for food and water both need to be fastened to the inside of the front door and refilled from the outside of the crate without opening the entrance. Filling water bowls is made simpler for airport personnel by little funnels that are cable-tied to the entrance. Food can be placed in a plastic bag and attached to the crate's top.
  • A minimum of two sides (domestic flights) and a maximum of four sides of the container must be ventilated (international flights). The apertures must be at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter and spaced 4 inches (10 cm) apart from center to center over the upper two-thirds of the opposing end and the remaining two sides.
  • The container must have directional stickers and LIVE ANIMAL STICKERS written on the top and sides in letters that are at least one inch tall.
  • The name of the pet and the owner's contact information must be written on the container. The most effective way to do this is to use duct tape or other strong tapes to secure your pet's information to the outside of the crate.
  • What documents are needed? ‍
  • Medical Certificate
  • All pets entering or departing Malaysia must have an original certificate from a private or government veterinarian confirming that "the pet is healthy and free from any contagious or infectious disease at the time of inspection." You should be aware that certification is only valid for seven days.
  • Import Permit
  • Obtained from the Malaysian Department of Veterinary Services , and faxed over to the country of origin
  • Export Permit
  • Obtained from the country of origin
  • Pet Quarantine

If you are traveling to Malaysia, the government requires the pet to be quarantined. Unless your pet is traveling from Ireland, Brunei Darussalam, Japan, Singapore, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom, dogs and cats must stay in quarantine for at least seven days. If no signs of illness are identified, your pet will be released from confinement. The quarantine period may be extended to six months if needed. Do take note that arrangements for quarantine must be made in advance.

  • What are the breed restrictions?

The following pets will not be transported:

  • Affenpinscher
  • American Bulldog
  • Bordeaux Mastiff
  • Boston Terrier
  • Brussels Griffon
  • Bull Mastiff
  • Cane Corso
  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
  • Dogo Argentino
  • English Mastiff
  • English Toy Spaniel
  • Fila Brasileiro
  • French Bulldog
  • Japanese Chin
  • Presa Canario

Pet Passport

pet travel to malaysia

Introduced in 2010, a pet passport is a small booklet that contains all the paperwork needed to bring a pet into Malaysia and back out again. This paperwork must be presented to customs officers in order for them to clear your pet when you travel. A pet passport essentially serves as proof that your pet is in good enough health to travel.  With a Pet Passport for Malaysia, your pet won't often have to endure a protracted quarantine period. In general, the Director General of Veterinary Services or the Director of the State Veterinary Department will issue your pet with a microchip, rabies vaccination, parasite treatment, health certificate, and import license. Learn more about pet passport guide here .

What To Prepare Before Flying?

pet travel to malaysia

Traveling may be both enjoyable and stressful. Even for something as peaceful as a vacation, there is a lot to prepare and plan ahead of time. The pressure is even higher when you are traveling with your pet. It's more complicated than just packing an additional bag to fly with a pet. Prior to arriving at the airport, you need to make special preparations for a flight involving animals. It could cause a lot of worry for both you and your pet. You can perform as much research as possible ahead of time so that you can feel comfortable that everything is in order. Here’s what you should know about traveling with your furry babies.

  • Schedule a visit to your vet

When traveling with a pet, the first thing to do is make a vet appointment. You should make sure your pet is healthy enough to fly. Make a second appointment not far from your departure date if your veterinarian gives you the all-clear to go.  To find out what paperwork you'll need, consult the airline and state veterinarian where you're going. Airlines frequently demand a health certificate that was issued at most 10 days prior to your journey. Planning your vet visits well in advance of your travel will help ensure that the necessary documentation and immunizations are completed, which may need many trips. ‍ Immunizations, Certificates, and Tests: Some nations may need bloodwork, rabies certificates, and particular vaccinations up to 6 months before departure. Because authorities may need to quarantine your pet upon arrival, breaking these guidelines could result in separation from your pet in your destination country. ‍ Medicine and flea prevention: If your pet has to be on any medication, special food, or flea and tick prevention, be sure to receive enough from your veterinarian to last the duration of the trip and a few weeks after. ‍ Stress Reduction: In addition to any necessary blood tests, vaccines, medications, and paperwork, your veterinarian can also provide you with information on therapies that may lessen the stress of traveling with your pet. For instance, having your pet's microchip implanted may allay worries about leaving home and losing your pet. If your pet is prone to anxiety, it may also be a good idea to consult your veterinarian about sedative options during the journey. Learn more about microchipping here .

  • Book in advance

Booking early will ensure that you receive the trip of your choice because airlines only allow a certain number of dogs per flight. Make your bookings well in advance, especially if you plan to travel overseas or with your pet in cargo since the necessary preparations might take months.

  • Rehearse with your pet

If your pet has never traveled a large distance, start off by taking them on small drives and gradually extending the distance. To help them get acclimated to it more quickly, make sure to always put them in their carrier. Take them for a stroll around the airport to familiarise them with the sights, sounds, and scents of the airport. Reward your pet for good conduct and speak to them in a soothing manner.

  • Buy the right crate

Make sure the shipping crate you purchase for your pet has IATA approval. Your pet should be able to sit, stand, and turn around comfortably in any crate or carrier. It must be stable enough to stay put as the car or plane accelerates or decelerates.

  • Make the crate comfy

Flying can be unpleasant for your pet due to crowded airports, pressurized planes, and unexpected noises. What can you do is provide some of your pet's favorite items, such as a blanket, a cherished toy, a miniature bed or pillow, and a shirt bearing your smell, to help him unwind. Additionally, make the carrier look as lovely as you can before you depart. Many animals flee and hide when they see their carrier emerge. Pawrents must make them feel at ease and encourage them to view it as a small getaway where they may unwind.

Learn about the pet policy of your airline

pet travel to malaysia

The different airlines have different pet policies. Hence, it is very crucial for pawrents who wish to fly with their pets to study and learn about pet policy for the chosen airline.  The majority of airlines have separate websites that outline their pet regulations and how to book an in-cabin or cargo shipment. Here are some links to pages with particular airline information about taking dogs along for the ride:

Moving to Malaysia with your pet

pet travel to malaysia

If you have a cat or a dog that you cannot part with, transporting it to Malaysia is an important decision. Regulations vary depending on which country you are from, the type of animal you have, and its health status. It is therefore recommended to get closer to the nearest Malaysian Embassy and to consult a pet transport specialist before you start.

Malaysia is considered a country where rabies is under control. On the other hand, in 2015, rabies cases were reported in three states located in the north of the country (Perlis, Kedah and Penang), so it should be noted that animals traveling to or from these regions will be subject to more severe conditions and even more strict if they subsequently travel to other countries.

There are no restrictions on the number of pets you wish to bring, on the strict condition that you provide suitable accommodation for the pets.

Certain animals such as reptiles and rodents are not subject to the rabies vaccine, but they must still have a health certificate.

Restrictions on pets entering Malaysia

If you have an unusual pet, you should check whether it is protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), and you will need to seek additional permissions if this is the case.

Puppies and kittens must be at least three months old before entering Malaysian territory. Some pet birds may have access to Malaysian territory, but you will need to obtain an import permit from the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services and a medical certificate issued by a government-approved veterinarian. This certificate must particularly indicate that your bird pet has been carefully monitored during the six months preceding its arrival and that it is not a vector for diseases like avian flu.

Malaysia does not allow certain breeds of dogs to enter the country. The following breeds are prohibited: American Pitbull, Pitbull terrier, Pitbull, American Staffordshire terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, American bulldog, Neapolitan mastiff, Akita, Dogo Argentino and Fila Brasileiro.

Other breeds are allowed to enter Malaysia, provided the owners make a formal application to the State Director of Veterinary Services, mentioning full details of the dog and relocation plans. This authorization is valid for Rottweiler, Doberman Pinscher, German Shepherd, Belgian Shepherd, East European Shepherd, Bullmastiff, Bull Terrier and Canary Mastiff.

Entry requirements

The following procedure applies for permitted species of cats and dogs traveling to Malaysia :

  • Your pet must be equipped with an unencrypted 15-digit ISO 11784 microchip. If the microchip is not ISO 11784 compliant, you will need to bring your own microchip scanner.
  • Your pet must travel with an import license issued by the Director-General of Veterinary Services or the State Director. An authorized agency can take care of the online procedures for you. The license is valid for 30 days from the date of issue.
  • No rabies titer test (RNATT) is required for pets entering Malaysia. However, your dog or cat must be vaccinated against rabies between 30 days and 12 months before entering Malaysia.
  • Dogs should also be vaccinated against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvovirus and parainfluenza virus, while cats should also be vaccinated against feline panleukopenia virus, viral rhinotracheitis, feline calicivirus and feline leukemia.
  • If you are traveling from the United States or Canada, a veterinarian accredited by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) or by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) must complete your veterinary certificate. pet for approval. The document must be submitted to the Malaysian authorities within 7 days of the entry of the animal into the territory. If you are not traveling from one of these countries, the certificate must be endorsed by the competent authority in your country responsible for the import and export of animals. Your animal must then travel with this vaccination certificate, which details all the vaccines administered by your veterinarian.
  • Pets must travel to Malaysia by airfreight and be declared to the Animal Quarantine Officer upon landing to be permitted entry.
  • All domestic dogs and cats must be free from signs of contagious disease when examined at the point of entry into Malaysia. If your dog or cat does not appear to be in good health, further examination by a licensed veterinarian can be carried out at your expense.

Read also Traveling to Malaysia

If your pet is entering Malaysia from the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Japan, Brunei or Singapore, no quarantine is necessary if all conditions are met. On the other hand, owners traveling with pets from Singapore must meet other requirements.

If your pet enters Malaysia from another country, it must be quarantined for at least seven days (10 days if coming from Australia). Your pet will be discharged if there is no evidence of infection or disease. When deemed necessary, the quarantine period can instead be extended for up to six months. Decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.

All dogs and cats requiring quarantine must enter Malaysia at Kuala Lumpur International Airport or Bayan Lepas International Airport, Penang. Animal quarantine centers are located at these two airports, and there is also another one at Padang Besar. Reservations for the quarantine facility should be made at least two weeks in advance, as these establishments are often full. Pet owners are responsible for the care of their dog or cat while in quarantine.
