Blunt Metro Umbrella : It’s clear that this umbrella’s structure provides durability, but despite its quality build, we found it to be too large for daily commuting and travel. However, this could be an excellent option to keep at home.

Samsonite Windguard Auto Umbrella : The umbrella's durability and quality materials make it feel sturdy and capable of withstanding harsh weather conditions, providing reliable protection. However, it requires significant force to close, which could be challenging for individuals with limited hand or arm strength. It also only comes in one color option: black.

EuroSchirm Swing Liteflex Ultra-light Weight Trekking Umbrella : This umbrella has a lightweight design and spacious canopy that accommodates two people comfortably, but the high price point and elongated size of the collapsed umbrella limits its portability and affordability compared to other travel umbrellas on the market.

Our T+L team tested 18 travel umbrellas in everyday scenarios to assess ease of use, protection, durability, portability, and value. We followed a comprehensive examination to evaluate each option, including overall construction, packability, performance in wet weather and windy conditions, coverage, drying time, and sturdiness. We used the umbrellas in a variety of practical scenarios, including rainy and windy days, and tested them while commuting to and from work to determine functionality, versatility, and durability. 

We took notes on how easy it was to open and close the umbrellas and their portability in different sized bags. Special attention was paid to the durability and quality of the umbrellas’ materials, including the fabric, wire structure, handle, and pole, to assess long-term resilience. In wet weather conditions, the umbrellas’ performance was evaluated in terms of its coverage, sturdiness, and comfort. Assessments include whether the umbrella adequately protects from rain, its size when fully open, the comfort of the handle, and stability in windy conditions. If exposed to rain, we also took notes on the time it took for the umbrella to dry completely and any signs of wear and tear. Some options did not make this list due to low-quality materials that blew inside out too easily and didn’t offer adequate coverage in the rain.

Our long-term plan includes testing these umbrellas for an additional six months to monitor each umbrella’s performance and durability in different travel scenarios and weather conditions. As we continue to test the umbrellas in various real-world settings, we will take notes on portability, practicality, and durability, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of each travel umbrella’s reliability. We will update these results if our findings should change and as we test new umbrellas.

Although I originally gravitated to this umbrella for its looks, the functionality is why it’s my absolute go-to. The canopy extends 102 centimeters and has a 93 centimeter shaft, meaning I’m not going to get pelted by rain when it’s windy (which is everyday in Chicago).

We purchased the Rain-Mate Compact Travel Umbrella so our reviewer could put it to the test. Keep reading for our full product review.

The Rain-Mate Compact Travel Umbrella comes in a tiny size that makes it highly appealing for travelers. You can stick this umbrella in your suitcase or purse and virtually forget about it, given it weighs just one pound and packs up to just 12 inches in length. 

As a traveler, I was particularly intrigued by the performance promises. This tiny umbrella was designed to outlast wind and storms despite its compact size. To find out if this was one of the year’s best travel umbrellas , I took the Rain-Mate out on a test-run during a rainstorm in New York City. Read on to find out whether or not it lived up to my expectations. 

Performance: Struggles with the wind

Based on its 42-inch canopy, I had a feeling this umbrella would keep me dry—and it did. It’s a spacious umbrella with more than enough room for one. Then the wind hit. The NYC waterfront has some mighty gusts of wind, and the Rain-Mate Compact Travel Umbrella simply couldn’t withstand them. After the third gust, the umbrella flipped, leaving me scrambling to flip it back as I dodged puddles and sought shelter.

Unlike many cheap umbrellas that flip once and go kaput, this umbrella has fiberglass ribs that make it easy to flip back.

To test it out in milder weather, I took the umbrella to Central Park on a breezy, sunny day. I used the umbrella to stay cool while reading on the lawn. Yet again, one gust too many sent this umbrella flipping. 

Here’s the good news, though: Unlike many cheap umbrellas that flip once and go kaput, this umbrella has fiberglass ribs that make it easy to flip back. Would I prefer it not to flip at all? Of course. But at least you won’t need an entirely new umbrella whenever a little wind hits.

Design: A large canopy that opens quickly 

When I first used the Rain-Mate Compact Travel Umbrella’s auto-open button, I was blown away by two things. First, I loved how quickly it opened. When I’m traveling, I’m often running in and out of stores, public transit, or restaurants, so the quick auto-open, auto-shut feature controlled by a button on the rubberized handle makes the umbrella highly functional when I need it most. 

Another impressive feature? Despite its tiny size, this umbrella’s canopy reaches 42 inches. While I could have fit someone else under the umbrella with me, I enjoyed keeping it all to myself—because I stayed pretty dry! (That is, until the wind hit.)

The quick auto-open, auto-shut feature controlled by a button on the rubberized handle makes the umbrella highly functional when I need it most.

While the manufacturer site doesn’t specify what material was used for the canopy, it feels like nylon to me. Unfortunately, it does not have UV protection features. While it kept me cool (when it wasn’t flipped out) during my sunny day at Central Park, I would’ve been better off with an umbrella built with UV protection . 

Portability: A compact, easily packable size

This umbrella weighs about one pound and packs down to 12 inches via a three-fold telescopic shaft, making it easy to stash in a travel purse or my go-to travel backpack . Given the umbrella’s size, it’s easy to throw it in a carry-on suitcase and forget about it—until you’re on a trip and need it!  

Despite its tiny size, this umbrella’s canopy reaches 42 inches.

Price: On par with competitors

At around $20, the Rain-Mate Compact Travel Umbrella is priced fairly and is comparable to its closest competitors. It costs more than the cheapest umbrellas, but it works slightly better. Plus, it’s guaranteed for life; no matter what happens, the company will replace it free of charge.

Competition: Can’t beat the competition

Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella: When comparing the Rain-Mate Compact Travel Umbrella with the Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella , both of which I tested, you’d expect the Rain-Mate to be much cheaper. It’s not nearly as durable, it flips out in the wind (when the Repel umbrella doesn’t), and it lacks Teflon waterproof material. Yes, it has a lifetime guarantee, but so does Repel. And yet, the Rain-Mate Compact Travel Umbrella is around $20, while the Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella—the better option, in our opinion—is only about $5 more. Both come in virtually identical sizes with similar colors, so the obvious choice—the one that withstands wind!—is the Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella.

Bodyguard Travel Umbrella: I also reviewed the Bodyguard Travel Umbrella, which packs down to about the same size as the Rain-Mate Compact Travel Umbrella (the Bodyguard closes to 11.5 inches long, while the Rain-Mate is 12 inches). When expanded, though, the Bodyguard is far and away the winner. It reaches 46 inches, 4 inches wider than the Rain-Mate umbrella. That means multiple people can fit under the Bodyguard umbrella. And while the Bodyguard umbrella is not as durable as the Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella, it’s much more durable than the Rain-Mate umbrella, which feels flimsy when compared to its two main competitors. When it comes to the Rain-Mate versus the Bodyguard, the Bodyguard is the better choice. When it comes to all three umbrellas, the Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella takes the cake. 

The Rain-Mate Compact Travel Umbrella is far from perfect. Similarly priced competitors work better when it comes to wind, but this umbrella does its job in the rain—and it comes with a lifetime guarantee.

Umbrellas are the kind of thing you don’t think about buying until the day you need one. That’s why city streets on rainy days are often littered with the broken remains of cheap umbrellas, quickly purchased from whatever convenience store was closest when the skies opened up.

But if you have an umbrella that is resilient, flexible, and small enough to carry with you all the time, you can avoid sacrificing another drugstore purchase to blustery winds. After testing 48 umbrellas since 2014 and researching many more, the Repel Easy Touch Umbrella is our favorite.

Tim Heffernan, one of the early testers and writers of our umbrella guide, used the Repel for more than a year and reported that after being stuffed in backpacks and subjected to the worst New York City had to offer, it held up well. He's since become more of a hooded raincoat guy but says the Repel is a good choice if you're committed to umbrellas.

The Repel excelled in all of our tests because it’s the right mix of portable and powerful, standing up to the harshest elements and bouncing back easily in the rare cases we managed to get it to invert. It’s comfortable to hold, and it collapses to 11½ inches, making it easy to store.

We put our test models through blizzards, inverted them multiple times by holding them directly perpendicular to the ground during a storm, and drenched them in the shower to gauge their coverage area. The Repel has nine support ribs (the structure the cloth stretches over), compared with most collapsible umbrellas’ eight or even six, so the Repel is exceptionally resistant to inverting.

The biggest reason the Repel stands apart is that if it does get turned inside out by the wind, its frame can spring back into shape and continue covering your head.

I bought my Telebrella in 2016. I live on a beach and use it regularly. We get many compliments and much interest. I have taken this umbrella down the side of a mountain in Crete Greece to Seitan Limania. Incredible I know, but it compacts tightly and is easy to travel with. I just bought a one for my brother for Christmas. He too is a regular beach goer.

Anyway, the umbrella is running up on 8years old and still in perfect working condition be it a bit faded. But is has been well used. I highly recommend!

Great Service by ShadeUSA. Got the Telebrella exactly when they said I would get it at the price listed. The fabric wasn't taut on the frame but worked well. The hooks we purchased worked well with it. Didn't need to use the clips for the wind. Shaded two of us sitting on lounge chairs. The second carry bag really helped resulting in less time to put it up after using it one day. We packed it in a large bag without any problems. Happy to have it.

We bought one and it worked as advertised. We were traveling by plane and it did fit in a large suitcase without adding a lot of weight.

Summary, love these umbrellas. Bought two Telebrella's and two sets of sand bags.

I bought these umbrellas because our timeshare raised the daily rental price to the point it just took a few days for the umbrellas to pay for themselves. So now they are “free” to use. Wish they had raised their prices before, so I would have looked earlier. Pros easily outweigh the cons. Add in the cost benefit and its really a no brainer if you rent umbrellas at a beach.

My tip Connect the two extensions to the bottom piece and then screw it down into the sand. It's much easier to get it straight this way. If you just screw down the bottom piece by itself, it’s hard to judge if it’s vertical. I also shortened the sandbag strings, thought they were little too long as they come.

Pros Don't have to schedule around when the activity hut opens to get umbrellas and then show them where to put them. Can set up any time we want instead of when they open. We always waited for them since we wake up early Don't have to wonder when they are going to take the umbrella down in the afternoon. Don't have to decide if it is worth it to get umbrellas when the weather is iffy. Especially since forecasts can be wrong. Don't need to stay all day at the beach. Can just come for a little while if we want. Biggest pro is savings, our timeshare charges a lot for one umbrella a day now, they paid for themselves in 3 days at the beach.

Cons Have to bring umbrellas from room to the beach. The carry bag makes it easier, and they are pretty light. Have to pack umbrellas in check in bag to bring. Have to let them down for lunch, or when away for a longer time to be safe, put pop back up when you come back. After a couple of times, this was easy so no big deal.

I wondered if I would have problems on windy days. It was fine, even when it got very windy. One afternoon, wind really picked up, and all the Costco Tommy B umbrellas were packed up, so by later it was just our umbrella and hotel umbrellas that were still out. Another day a big gust of wind knocked an arm down. So we installed the little binder clips and no more problems. On windy days, we also added a sand bag or two, connecting the sand bag to the upper part of the pole as instructed by customer service. I would locate the sand bag in the direction of the wind. So if you stood at pole and faced sand bag, you’d be facing the wind. Not sure if this was necessary, but it made me feel better.

Reached out to company to ask a question and got prompt service. Once I got the product I put it together to test it out and it is fabulous. I spend 10 weeks a year on beaches and have used just about every beach shade or umbrella imaginable from pop ups to tents to shade sails to the usual beach umbrellas sold at Costco, you name it. They’ve all failed or broke or just didn’t perform. I have spent probably $1,000 over the years on these various items as well as rentals. This is literally the first product that checks ALL the boxes: portable, fits in a checked bag, easy storage when at home, unbreakable frame, good quality materials, easy set up AS WELL AS easy take down and easy to put back in the damn bag. As others have said, when possible, you can assemble the umbrella in the hotel and take the bigger bag (which is included and thankfully, not an extra accessory) to save even more time at the beach. I have used (and junked) so many other products that were ok in one or two of these areas but so bad in the other areas that it wasn’t suitable for me. I have cursed a lot (and loudly) in trying to take down other products while I am hot, wet, sunburnt and ready to leave. This is a dream to take down. If this one ever were to break I would not hesitate to buy another of this exact same type. It’s a complete winner for me and a game changer. I look forward to telling everyone on the beach all about this umbrella cause This one will definitely draw a crowd upon assembly.

The best thing to do is to get on the brown circle (number 5) line since the most beautiful metro stations are situated on this line. The only exception is the metro stop Mayakovskaya one the green line (number 2). My suggestion is to get a map, mark these metro stops on there and hop on the metro. It helps to get an English > Russian map to better understand the names of the stops. At some of the metro stops, the microphone voice speaks Russian and English so it’s not difficult at all.

Another thing we found out, is that it’s worth taking the escalator and explore the other corridors to discover how beautiful the full station is.

These are my favourite metro stations in Moscow, in order of my personal preference:

1. Mayakovskaya Station

The metro station of Mayakovskaya looks like a ballroom! Wide arches, huge domes with lamps and mosaic works make your exit of the metro overwhelming. Look up and you will see the many colourful mosaics with typical Soviet pictures. Mayakovskaya is my personal favourite and is the only stop not on the brown line but on the green line.

2. Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya metro station is famous for its yellow ceiling. An average museum is nothing compared to this stop. Splendour all over the place, black and gold, mosaic – again – and enormous chandeliers that made my lamp at home look like a toy.

3. Novoslobodskaya Station

The pillars in the main hall of Novoslobodskaya metro station have the most colourful stained glass decorations. The golden arches and the golden mosaic with a naked lady holding a baby in front of the Soviet hammer and sickle, make the drama complete.

4. Prospect Mira Station

The beautiful chandeliers and the lines in the ceiling, make Prospekt Mira an architectural masterpiece.

5. Belorusskaya Station

Prestigious arches, octagonal shapes of Socialistic Soviet Republic mosaics. The eyecatcher of Belorusskaya metro station, however, is the enormous statue of three men with long coats, holding guns and a flag.

6. Kiyevskaya Station

The metro station of Kiyevskaya is a bit more romantic than Belorusskaya and Prospect Mira. Beautiful paintings with classical decorations.

7. Taganskaya Station

At the main hall Taganskaya metro station you will find triangle light blue and white decorations that are an ode to various Russians that – I assume – are important for Russian history and victory. There is no need to explore others halls of Taganskaya, this is it.

8. Paveletskaya Station

Another and most definitely the less beautiful outrageous huge golden mosaic covers one of the walls of Paveletskaya. I would recommend taking the escalator to the exit upstairs to admire the turquoise dome and a painting of the St Basil’s Cathedral in a wooden frame.

Travelling with Moscow’s metro is inexpensive. You can have a lot of joy for just a few Rubbles.

It’s absolutely beautiful! Moscow is a great city trip destination and really surprised me in many ways.

My partner and I did a self guided Moscow Metro tour when we were there 2 years ago. So many breathtaking platforms…I highly recommend it! Most of my favorites were along the Brown 5 line, as well. I also loved Mayakovskaya, Arbatskaya, Aleksandrovski Sad and Ploshchad Revolyutsii. We’re heading back in a few weeks and plan to do Metro Tour-Part 2. We hope to see the #5 stations we missed before, as well as explore some of the Dark Blue #3 (Park Pobedy and Slavyansky Bul’var, for sure), Yellow #8 and Olive #10 platforms.
