The Qantas Travel Money Card (previously known as Qantas Cash) is also the only prepaid travel money card that lets you earn Qantas Points as you spend.

Note: Qantas Travel Money is rebranding as Qantas Pay from May 2024. Existing cardholders can keep using their cards, but applications for new Qantas Pay cards won't be available until 21 May 2024. We'll update this review with fresh details when Qantas Pay launches.

Should I load Japanese Yen onto my Qantas Money card to use in Japan or is it better to just load AUD and use that

Hi Maya, If you load it as AU currency, you may be charged currency conversion fees and international transaction fees, so you’re better off loading Yen.

Can you use your Qantas Money card to tap for purchases overseas? Will it work in Egypt?

February 14, 2024

The card works in all countries except in geographical regions currently affected by sanctions. These include Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Syria and the Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk regions, though Qantas may change and update this list at any time.

You will need to present the card and physically insert or swipe it, so you won’t be able to tap.

Hope this helps!

Hello Amy, Which of the Travel Money Cards can be linked to your phone for digital payments?

Amy Bradney-George Finder

December 27, 2023

Hi Pete, Thanks for your question. One option is to consider cards that can be added to Apple Pay or Google Pay, such as the Wise Travel Money Card or Revolut travel account. Some cards also offer apps that you can use to pay and/or manage the account. While mobile wallet payments are easy for online shopping, keep in mind that you may need to use a physical card when you’re travelling. So you may want to compare a wider range of travel money cards to find one you want. I hope this helps.

November 19, 2023

I want to know, if I have loaded CAN dollars and used my card for ‘tap’ purchases, such as a coffee ect. Do fees apply?

November 21, 2023

Hi Bel, This card doesn’t charge additional fees for contactless payments. Just keep in mind that there could be other costs, for example if a business applied a fee for card payments. I hope this helps.

Bell Customer representative did an excellent job

I contacted qantas mastercard to activate my pin bec last friday one cust rep helped me to activate the card but the pin she did not. I went to shop today and i was not able to use it bec my pin is not set up yet. Today I spoke with one cust rep and she said I need to call on Monday so frequent flyer staff can help me. Imagine credit call customer cannot use their card bec a rep cannot help to activate the pin. But I tried to call again and Bell qantas mastercard rep helped and assisted me very well. She helped me to log in to qantas website by resetting my frequent flyer questions. She is very knowledgeable even advice that answers should nver be with spaces which i did not know. Then we went again to wantas money apps and thats where we set up my pin. Bravo… thanks Bell your the best. Keep it up..

Worst banking app I’ve used

UPDATE: I received a developer response from Qantas Money following my review. This is great as it says to me that they are taking customer sentiment and feedback seriously. Since I posted this original review, the app has been performing much better, but there is still some obvious user flow issues where some things break or can’t be accessed. It’s still the worst banking app I’ve used, but I’ve only used about 6 so there could be worse out there. Thanks for the response and look forward to more updates. Upgrades to 2 stars as performance has improved and balance always visible. I’m not really sure how the average ratings for this app are largely positive. This app is quite frankly terrible. The app experiences “technical issues” around 3-4 times a week, where several basic functions don’t work (like your balance, transactions, or statements). When this happens, you basically can’t use the app. The offers section also only works about 10% of the time, though i don’t use that much. What’s more, often the balance is incorrect, and a couple of times the app has even said my card has been cancelled, before correcting itself several hours later. It also asks me to log in to access different parts of the app, even though I’m already logged in. Honestly if I knew how poor this app was compared to the other ones I use, I may not have got this credit card… I’ll know for next time.

Developer Response ,

If you are still experiencing specific issues, please contact us at 1300 992 700, available 24/7. Qantas Premier Credit Card - great as long as you don’t try to use overseas

I gave up on this credit card as the most frustrating customer service experience I have ever endured. I know - that’s saying something. Every time I tried to use it overseas it would be blocked as a suspicious transaction. After blocking, Qantas Credit Card then SMS you telling you to ring their international number. When you call it, you discover it’s a wrong number. So you google a national phone number and phone them. This costs - remember you are likely to be ringing from your mobile and having to pay exhorbitant global roaming phone and data charges. I was phoning from Guatemala and Belize. When you do get through to a call centre you find its staffed by competent Citibank staff. They generally sympathise and restore the card. Then the very next time I’d go to use it, it would be blocked again. And so the stupidity rolls on. There’s a serious problem with this Card’s risk management leadership and nobody is being held to account for it. I eventually had to complain through the relevant government authority before I could get an apology of sorts from these incompetents. It’s amusing and ironic that Qantas operates a Card that works as long as you don’t use it while travelling.

How To Apply For A Business Credit Card

Published: Apr 25, 2024, 9:28pm

Table of Contents

What is a business credit card, who can apply for a business credit card, what is a business credit score, what is a ‘good’ business credit score and how can i improve mine, steps for applying for a business credit card, what factors should i consider when applying for a business credit card, frequently asked questions (faqs).

A business credit card can be a valuable tool, helping you cover any cash-flow shortages, and separate personal and business finances, particularly as your business grows.

It can also come with added benefits depending on the type you choose, from extra cards for employees, to the ability to earn points on purchases, which you can exchange for rewards.

With a vast range of business credit cards on offer to Australians, finding and applying for the right card to suit you and the needs of your business can be tricky. We detail how different types of business credit card work and the common eligibility criteria, explain why your business and personal credit scores are important and lay out the steps for applying for a card below.

Related: How To Set Up A Business In Australia

As with personal credit cards , the business variety comes in a range of shapes and sizes to appeal to the vast needs and preferences of business owners. The main types are:

Interest-free period credit cards: You have a set period—usually 51-55 days—during which you pay no interest on purchases. It can help with short-term cash flow, allowing you to cover bills when you haven’t yet received customer payments.

Rewards credit cards : These cards can offer cash back or gift cards, or allow you to earn points on purchases, which can later be redeemed for rewards such as flights, hotel stays and everyday shopping with the lender’s retail partners. They often come with higher annual fees than other types of credit card.

Low-rate credit cards: This type of card best suits those who need to carry a balance from month to month and want to pay a minimal amount in interest. These cards usually come with rewards or perks.

Charge cards: Unlike credit cards, these cards have no pre-set spending limit, but you’ll usually be required to pay the balance in full each statement period. Certain charge cards may offer the option to pay off a portion of the balance, up to a limit, over time instead.

Related: Our Pick Of The Best Credit Card Offers For Australians

Before applying for a business credit card, it’s best to check the eligibility requirements. Criteria can differ depending on the card, and the lender, but generally you will likely need to:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia
  • Be the director of the business
  • Have an Australian Business Number (ABN)
  • Meet the lender’s stated minimum annual turnover requirement (e.g. $75,000)
  • Be registered for goods and services tax (GST)
  • Have good credit history with no record of bad debt or payment default.

A lender will assess your business credit card application based on a number of factors, including your business income, business information and credit history. The latter is reflected in a score.

As Patrick Coghlan, the chief executive of CreditorWatch explains: “A business credit score is a number that represents the creditworthiness of a business based on its past payment behaviour—both good and bad.

“It is calculated by assessing the information detailed in a business credit report and typically collated by a credit reporting bureau such as CreditorWatch. Our credit score incorporates data from more than 50 private and public sources, including the ATO, Australian courts and ASIC, to assign a business one of 14 risk ratings, from A1 (very low) to F (default).”

It can be a good idea to check your business credit score with a credit reporting bureau before applying for a credit card. A lender may also consider your personal credit score when assessing your application.

“At CreditorWatch, we would consider any entity rated C2 or above as able to meet its credit commitments,” Coghlan explains.

“A1, A2, A3, we rate as very low risk; B1, B2 as low risk; B3, C1as neutral risk; and C2 as acceptable risk.

“When applying for business credit, particularly for small businesses, many financial institutions will also consider the personal credit history of the applicant.”

If your business credit score is poor, you may want to work on improving it before applying for a credit card.

“One of the best ways to improve your business credit score is to consistently pay your bills and invoices on time. From utility bills and office rent to client and supplier invoices, consistent and timely payments through your business bank account will contribute positively to your business credit score,” says Coghlan.

“Conversely, consistent late payments can result in court action by the creditors and a potentially late payment or default notice lodged against the business. These adverse events can negatively impact a business credit score, making it more difficult to secure business credit.”

The exact process for applying for a business credit card can differ between lenders; however, the following steps commonly apply:

  • Identify the type of business credit card you need and your preferred features. Is a traditional credit card that allows you to carry a balance with interest, or a charge card with no pre-set spending limit best? Does my business require travelling? If so, a travel reward card could be beneficial.
  • Shop around for a business credit card. One of the easiest ways is to visit lender websites and compare their offerings for the type of card you need. Among the features to check are interest rates, interest-free periods, account fees, other fees and charges for cash advances, foreign transactions, and late repayments, as well as any benefits, perks or rewards.
  • Check the relevant eligibility requirements , and ensure that both you and your business meet them.
  • Prepare required documentation based on a lender’s requirements. As part of the application you’ll need to submit your personal details such as your home address, driving licence number, and contact number. The lender will also require your business’ details such as the business entity name, ABN, and the details of individuals who own or control 25% or more of its share or voting rights. You’ll have to provide business financial information, and information on your level of tax debt and tax residency details.
  • Complete and submit the business credit or charge card application, in-branch, online, or by printing off a form and posting it to the lender. Remember, all information must be accurate and correctly inputted for the lender to approve the application. The lender will assess the borrowing strength of your business by conducting a hard credit check to review your business credit history and the likelihood of you making repayments. As these checks show up on the businesses’ credit report, applying regularly for credit, and lenders rejecting your application, can damage your businesses’ credit score. A lender may also run a credit check to assess your personal credit history, which works in a similar way, with similar implications.

If you apply online, you could be notified of your application status within minutes of submitting it. If successful, you may be able to access your new business credit card account straight away. Ultimately, the speed at which a lender provides a decision depends on whether you meet the eligibility criteria, the time it takes to verify your submitted documents and assessment of your credit history.

You’ll want to think carefully about the amount of credit your business needs, taking into account your monthly business income, everyday expenses and any cash flow shortfalls. A lender may have a maximum credit limit that you can apply for online, but offer a higher amount if you contact it.

You may choose to pay the full balance on your credit card each month, the minimum repayment required or an amount somewhere in between, but remember, paying more keeps the amount you pay in interest low. It’s essential to review a card’s terms and conditions and table of fees, noting the interest rate, fees and charges so you can find a card that best suits your business’ financial situation.

Finally, a business credit card can come with personal liability, where you, as the business owner, are responsible for all the transactions on the account, and the balance owing. Alternatively, several business owners and or directors may be jointly liable, or the business itself, for larger entities.

Should I get a business or personal credit card?

You may want to consider a business credit card over a personal one as it can offer benefits tailored to businesses such as additional cards for employees and  better rewards, more introductory bonus points and better point per dollar earning rates.

You may also be able to apply for a higher credit limit on a business credit card, though whether you will be approved for one will depend on your financial outlook and credit history. Using a business credit card also provides you with the opportunity to build a credit history for your company.

Can I get a balance transfer business credit card?

Yes, there are balance transfer credit cards for businesses. As with personal versions of these cards, they are designed to help you if you’re not clearing your balance on one or more credit card each month, and are paying a high interest rate.

You can consolidate your debt by transferring your balances to the card, which should offer a lower interest rate, helping you save money and improve your business credit score over time.

What is the best business credit card?

The best business credit card is subjective as the needs and financial situations of businesses and their owners vary greatly.

Before comparing cards, you’ll first want to decide the type you need, whether that be a low-rate card, reward card or another. Spending some time comparing your preferred type of card, from various lenders, will help you find the most suitable one for you and your business. The terms and conditions and schedule of fees for each card, will provide you with vital information on interest rates, and interest-free periods, annual fees, cash advance fees, late payment fees and more, if applicable.

If you’ve decided on a reward card with a travel program, you may want to take a look at what our research revealed to be the best business frequent flyer rewards credit cards .
