‘Sea Song Sessions’ is a collection of British maritime folk songs and sea shanties, performed Jon Boden, Seth Lakeman, Ben Nicholls, Emily Portman & Jack Rutter which will be released on 30 September on Topic Records.
You can hear songs from the Sea Song Sessions and more LIVE at three, one-off harbourside and onboard performances from musicians on the album and friends. They will sail by Tallship Anny from performance to performance. Join them as they dock along the Cornish coastline on their voyage!
The concept for the album came to them in 2021, when they were asked to prepare an evening of sea-related songs for the Folkestone Festival. Boden’s celebrated work with Bellowhead (of course no strangers to sea-faring songs) and Ben Nicholls’ band, Kings of The South Seas (who play exclusively maritime-influenced music), Seth Lakeman’s own extensive body of work from the South West as well as Emily Portman and Jack Rutter’s sizeable oceanic repertoires, all formed the natural foundation and inspiration for these acclaimed musicians to conceive the Sea Song Sessions. They chose to record material from each artist’s repertoire, traditional songs and some newly written for these sessions.

Sea Song Sessions, a Collaborative Maritime Collection from Boden, Lakeman, Nicholls, Portman & Rutter – a review
The recent resurgence has made it clear that sea shanties remain an important part of the UK singing tradition. Topic Records reminds us what songs about the sea can really be, as Alex Hurr explores.
Releasing a compilation of sea shanties has taken on a different meaning since the bizarre (yet exciting) internet phenomenon that took place at the end of 2020. It may have crossed your mind, as it did mine, that Topic Records might be ‘cashing in’ on this trend (as out of character as that may be), but we would both be quite mistaken. These songs are not designed to pander to any algorithm – what you’ll hear here is a genuine collection of songs performed by lovers of shanties, who were originally asked to prepare some sea-related songs for Folkestone Festival before the good idea of creating an album came about. Jon Boden , Seth Lakeman , Ben Nicholls , Emily Portman and Jack Rutter are all household names and, with their extensive repertoires, seem like a perfect selection for the task.
The album opens with one of my personal favourite sea-themed tunes; ‘The Rambling Sailor’ (also known as ‘Young Johnson’, Roud 518 ), was brought to a wider audience by Tim Hart in 1968 but collected by Vaughan Williams way back in 1907. This rendition has great rhythm and veers towards an American traditional twang reminiscent of bluegrass. The sound of the ensemble here is particularly enjoyable, building a strong image of the group from the offset.
The next traditional song on the album is ‘Rock’n’Row Me Over’ (‘One More Day’, Roud 704 ) on which Emily Portman takes the lead and invites us on a beautifully wistful journey, full of longing and trepidation that one can imagine feeling on those long sea voyages far, far away from home. The ensemble vocals at the end invoke images of a band of wayfaring marauders on their way to a distant land, lamenting for that which has been left behind – a common theme in these songs of the sea. Portman follows on with another traditional song, ‘Short Jacket and While Trousers’ (‘The Rakish Female Sailor’, Roud 231 ), a song that has particular notoriety because of its subject matter, touching as it does on themes of cross-dressing, repressed homosexuality and, of course, unrequited love. Though there are many variations, they all describe a woman who dresses as a man in order to board a ship and join her lover in some far-off land. The twist, as in many of these renditions, sees the captain develop feelings of a lustful nature, wishing that woman-dressed-as-man were indeed a maid, so that they could be together. A great ballad, expertly reproduced by Emily Portman and the band.
Jon Boden shines with his performance of ‘Fire Marengo’, a ‘cotton-screwing’ song (well worth a deeper dig if you’re into these sorts of things). Here, the whole ensemble brings energy to the song, creating an exciting and powerful atmosphere, and making the listener want to jump up and shout, “fire!” It gave me fantasies about boarding a ship and leaving it all behind… but alternatively would be a great song to introduce at your next singaround to really get the blood pumping.
‘Young Susan on Board of a Man-of-War’ [ Roud 1533 ] is led by Jack Rutter, who gives one of my favourite renditions. It’s another ballad with a strong female character at its helm. Susan dresses as a man to board a ship with her bloke, but ends up getting shot, though we must assume not fatally, as they swiftly return to England where they get married and (one presumes) live happily ever after with nothing but a fine story and a hefty scar.
Those with their fingers on the folk releases pulse might spot that this compilation is mostly made up of songs already released elsewhere by these artists, but re-recorded with this exciting line-up. Although the songs aren’t strictly new in this sense (and it is folk, after all), I would say that the manner in which they are performed and compiled here for Topic Records makes the disc far greater than the sum of its parts. This is folk with a modern edge, and I might even go so far as to say it nods in the direction of American Country in its timbres and sound quality. The tunes are energetic and, though they feature predominantly acoustic instrumentation, make up a powerful but varied selection of tracks.
Notes from the Shovel Dance underground
I get the impression that the intention of this album was to prove that there is more to the sea shanty genre than ‘ The Wellerman Come ‘ (to randomly pick one song from the recent resurgence). The depth of storytelling and history of sea shanties is broad and fascinating, and this album does a great job of giving us a flavour of this. Perhaps only an institution as loved as Topic Records could compile such a compelling collection of songs featuring some of the most dynamic performers in the contemporary folk scene today, on which each musician is given the opportunity to bring their expertise and shine. This will be an album I come back to time and time again because of its great selection, expert arrangements and enthusiastic delivery.
Sea Song Sessions is released on Topic Records on September 30th. It can be ordered by following this link .

FREEDOM FIELDS 15TH ANNIVERSARY
Seth Lakeman was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2005 for ‘Kitty Jay’. It catapulted Lakeman into the forefront of the new British folk movement and his follow up was the gold-selling ‘Freedom Fields’ which was released twice in 2006. Produced by his brother Sean Lakeman it came out on iScream and was then re-released by Relentless (EMI) where it went on to become Seth’s first of 6 UK Top 40 albums.

To celebrate the 15 th anniversary, Seth will be playing a worldwide concert stream with his band playing the album which includes ‘ Lady of the Sea’, ‘King and Country’ and ‘ White Hare’ plus other favourites.
Seth says “ I’m really excited to be able to share the whole Freedom Fields album for its 15th anniversary! It’s a collection of songs hugely inspired by the Westcountry and it still seems to be the most popular album I’ve recorded so far. This is going to be pretty special. I hope you can tune in to watch!”
Freedom Fields helped Seth build on his traditional cult following but found him a whole new audience for his rhythmic, captivating brand of indie-folk song writing. He was named Folk Singer of the Year, and ‘ Freedom Fields’ awarded Album Of The Year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2007.
“Delicious harmonies and the occasional fiery fiddle are the order of the day, with his impressive song-writing skills shining out of every tune.” BBC Music (Freedom Fields)

Seth Lakeman takes a break from the Robert Plant musical juggernaut in Autumn 2018 to release his ninth studio album ‘The Well Worn Path’ on 26 October before heading out on tour in November with a new band line-up.
Seth found time at the beginning of the year, in between charging around the globe with Robert and his band, the Sensational Space Shifters, to record his new studio album The Well Worn Path. It’s a return to a no-nonsense, organic, classic folk-rock approach with hints of Fairport Convention, Neil Young, Nick Cave and Billy Bragg – plus Lakeman’s trademark foot-stomping, fiddle bow-shredding and soaring vocals. Seth brought in top producer Ben Hillier and along with long-time collaborator Ben Nicholls on upright and electric bass he was joined by new boys Kit Hawes on electric and acoustic guitar and drummer Evan Jenkins. One of the finest female folk voices Kathryn Roberts also contributes sublime backing vocals to the album.

VARIOUS ARTISTS – Sea Song Sessions (Topic TSCD612)
The set opens with ‘The Rambling Sailor’, a rousing version probably led by Seth Lakeman – it’s hard to be sure without notes. So far so conventional. Jack Rutter leads an equally boisterous ‘The Dreadnought (Bound Away)’, a shanty (if that is the correct term) from the 1920s. It has a good pedigree, being previously recorded by Ewan MacColl, Barbara Dickson and Louis Killen. Emily Portman brings her own delicate style to ‘Rock ‘n’ Row Me Over’, telling the tale from the point of view of the young girl in the first line. See Stan Hugill’s Shanties From The Seven Seas for a full discussion of the song and, indeed, every other traditional shanty.
The first “new” song is Jon Boden’s gentle ‘Salvation Army Band Girl’ which tells of a girl who plays the tenor concertina and the young sailor she promised to wait for. It’s followed by the broadside ‘Jack And The Bear Skin’ sung with appropriately deadpan humour by Ben Nicholls in his rolling bass voice. Emily again takes the female viewpoint on ‘Short Jacket And White Trousers’, a naval version of the familiar female drummer story probably from Bert Lloyd. ‘The Good Ship Anny’ is an instrumental named for the tall ship on which the performers sailed between gigs around the Cornish coast while ‘Fire Marengo’ is immediately recognisable as Jon Boden – you couldn’t mistake him.
‘Some Old Salty’, a favourite song of mine by Lal Waterson and Oliver Knight, lacks the loose swing of the original – instead Emily brings a wistfulness to the lyric. Ben follows her again with ‘The Mermaid’s Song’ – not the rollicking traditional shanty but a rather more sedate 18 th century poem. Seth adapts a Cornish folk tale for ‘The Lady And The Lantern’ and Jack reprises ‘Young Susan On Board Of A Man-Of-War’ from his otherwise land-locked album, Hills. Finally Jon closes the set with the reflective piano-based ‘Deep Blue Sea’.
Sea Song Sessions is a perfect example of ensemble work. These guys have known each other for years and everyone fits together so well that they have room to experiment and be imaginative and perhaps a little daring.

Sea Song Sessions
Topic Records
30 September 2022
Given Britain’s position as an island nation, it should not be surprising that music and song related to the sea feature prominently in its social and political history. With evidence of sea shanties going back to at least the mid-1400s, sea songs and ballads from the 17 th century onwards and forebitters from the period of 1780-1830, there is a wealth of material to be trawled. More recent times have been a fecund spawning ground, too, for example, Sea Songs, the early 20th-century arrangement of three British sea songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams through to 2021’s excellent Seaspeak album of original compositions from Joe Danks (read the Folk Radio review here .)
As might be expected, the oldest independent record label in the world and leviathan of British folk music, Topic Records has a long and enviable reputation for recording maritime/sea songs, for example, Sea Songs & Shanties , from 1971, Blow The Man Down , and our Editor-in-chief’s pick Farewell Nancy , from 1964 . Now add to this list Sea Song Sessions , an album which sits remarkably comfortably with its illustrious predecessors and one which is sure to make waves and be a copper-bottomed success.
This latest nautically themed collection, produced and mixed by Ben Hillier (Blur, Doves, Elbow, Magic Numbers, Nadine Shah) at his Agricultural Audio studio “of incredibly rustic proportions, built out of straw, in the middle of a field” just north of Lewes over two days in May of 2022, features a collaboration between five stellar figures in the contemporary folk world, Jon Boden , Seth Lakeman , Ben Nicholls , Emily Portman and Jack Rutter .
The initial stimulus for the album came to the musicians in 2021 when they were asked to prepare an evening of sea-related songs for the Folkestone Festival . With several of those involved already having worked in collaboration on other musical projects, indeed with Ben too (see Kings of the South Seas ), all five are well-versed in sea-faring songs, and the decision was made to record material from each of the artist’s repertoire. The 13 tracks, in the main traditional broadsides, ballads and shanties, with the odd new composition and more recent song, will mostly be familiar. Still, the freshness and originality with which this talented collective re-interprets the folk standards and breathe new life into such classics mean that each unfolding track is revelatory.
The collection opens with the traditional The Rambling Sailor , the first single taken from the album. Widely known and collected around the world, whilst the occupation of the protagonist ranges from miner to soldier,
Here the version tells of the philandering of a sailor, one young Johnson, and is based on the version by Tim Hart and Maddy Prior from their 1968 release Folk Songs of Old England Vol.1 .
‘..with my false heart and flattering Tongue, I’ll court all girls both old and young, I’ll court them all but marry none, and still be a rambling sailor.’
Having found The Dreadnought (Bound Away) in The Oxford Book of Sea Songs, Jack added his own music and chorus. Obviously referencing the eponymous clipper famed for its speedy crossings between Liverpool and New York, Jack adds, “…it’s full of the excitement of large sailing ships, larger oceans and the prospect of new beginnings” .
There have been many recent recorded versions of Rock’n’Row Me Over , Roud 704, an end-of-voyage shanty sung with enthusiastic anticipation by those on board. The Home Service , Ashley Hutchings and the Blair Dunlop -led incarnation of The Albion Band immediately spring to mind. This gentle reading, however, with Emily taking lead vocals, is a thing of beauty, truly on a par with these previous esteemed versions. Her outstanding vocals also take centre-stage on Short Jacket and White Trousers . A song which sits within the group relating to young women dressing up as men, also known as The Rakish Female Sailor, Emily sang a further variation, I Am A Maid That’s Deep in Love , on the Fathoms album by The Furrow Collective , here her lead vocal is given ample space to breathe in front of sympathetic guitar from Jack and double bass from Ben, and careful listening to the lyrics will pay dividends.
Young Susan on Board of a Man-of-War is another traditional song in which a female ‘put on a jolly sailor’s clothes, and daubed her hands with tar / To cross the raging seas for love, on board of a Man-of-War’ , although in this case Young Susan took this action to accompany her sailor lover, unbeknown to him and the story inevitably unfolds. With Jack on lead vocals, the additional accompaniment on this version presents a fuller sound to that on his Hills release, neither better nor worse, merely different.
Ben provides sonorous lead vocals on two old broadsides, Jack and the Bear Skin and The Mermaid’s Song , the latter featuring some excellent harmonies in a song which has a distinct Transatlantic air. The former, a humorous piece delivered here with a melody, to these ears, has very much an Eastern European, perhaps unsurprising given the fact that, according to The World On The Street website, the song was probably published between 1880 and 1900 and tells of a sailor’s return from the Baltic with an enormous beard cultivated using bear grease,
‘Jack to her now appeared with a most enormous beard A head of hair transmogrified him so you see That his sweetheart never knew him ‘till at her feet he fell in A rolling on a bear skin from the Baltic Sea’
Of the remaining traditional songs, Fire Marengo , recorded by Jon as both a Bellowhead track and also as part of his one-year “Folk Song A Day ” Project, unbelievably some 12 years ago, is given an electric, sparkling makeover, whilst The Lady and the Lantern is the tragic tale of a shipwreck and the loss of a baby, the mother of whom died of grief and whose spirit still inhabits the area.
This is a hauntingly eerie piece delivered by Seth in a suitably sombre tone over mournful harmonium and violin.
‘They sometimes still see her float over the water, a portent to warn of disaster and doom. Through storm and rough weather her spirit lies restless, her lantern still shines through the dark and the gloom’
Of the non-traditional offerings, there is Seth’s The Good Ship Anny, the sole instrumental on the album, Jon’s wonderful Salvation Army Band Girl , which I venture to suggest is a ‘traditional song in waiting’, and what is undoubtedly a modern classic Some Old Salty , by Lal Waterson and Oliver Knight .
The closing song on the album, the Victorian ballad Deep Blue Sea , learnt by Jon at Forest School Camp, is a spartan track featuring his piano and lead vocal together with close, hymnal harmonies from Ben, Emily, Jack and Seth, creating a celestial atmosphere that is a perfect ending to a glorious album which showcases some of the best of the current crop of British folk artists delivering some of the best music you’re likely to hear this year.

With Jon Boden, Seth Lakeman, Ben Nicholls, Emily Portman & Jack Rutter
They chose to record material from each artist’s repertoire, traditional songs and some newly written for these sessions and the album was released on Topic Records. Folk Radio described it as “ a glorious album, showcasing some of the best of the current crop of British folk artists”.

Commencement-Eve Pops offers musical tour of America
Dr. Nick Weiser and the Fredonia Jazz Orchestra will be featured along with the Fredonia Vocal Jazz Ensemble when Rockefeller Arts Center presents “A Big Band Musical Tour of America,” the 2024 Commencement-Eve Pops concert.
From Glenn Miller’s “St. Louis Blues” and Tony Bennett’s “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” to Nat King Cole’s “Route 66” and Gladys Night’s “Midnight Train to Georgia,” hundreds of songs have been written about famous American cities, states and places.
Rockefeller Arts Center’s 2024 Commencement-Eve Pops will cover these tunes and more with “A Big Musical Tour of America” on Friday, May 17 at 7:30 p.m. in King Concert Hall at SUNY Fredonia.
Tickets are available online 24/7. Tickets may also be purchased on Monday, Wednesday or Friday by phone at (716) 673-3501 or in person at the Fredonia Ticket Office in the Williams Center.
The concert will feature the 17-piece Fredonia Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Nick Weiser and the Fredonia Vocal Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Assistant Professor James Harrington on a “musical tour of America that spans from north to south and from sea to shining sea.”
Also in the spotlight will be a number of student dancers performing to choreography by SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor Paul Mockovak.
Rockefeller Arts Center Director Jefferson Westwood serves as producer for the Commencement-Eve Pops. He said the “rough idea” of a concert based on tunes about U.S. cities and states developed slowly over a number of years as he looked through printed and online catalogs of big band charts.
“It actually came into more focus as Dr. Weiser and I were finalizing the repertoire for our 2022 Commencement-Eve concert, ‘A Salute to the Big Apple,’” he said. “Once we had a cluster of well-known tunes, we started looking aggressively for other compositions to complete the program. This led to the inclusion of ‘Stars Fell on Alabama’ and ‘Midnight Train to Georgia.”
Rockefeller Arts Center’s Commencement-Eve Pops is a tradition dating back 30-plus years. The goal of the 2024 edition is to once again provide an enjoyable evening of musical entertainment.
“I’m always happy when audience members tell me how impressed they are with the quality and professionalism of our student performers,” Mr. Westwood said.
“Commencement-Eve Pops: A Big Band Musical Tour of America” is a DFT Communication Pops Series event presented as part of the 2023-24 Lake Shore Savings Season at Rockefeller Arts Center.
