About ho chi minh city.
Southern Ho Chi Minh City is a lively metropolis full of contrasts. From cheap guesthouses to luxury hotels, from expensive restaurants to the best street food, and from colorful markets to impressive war memorials. Are you going to Vietnam? Then you shouldn’t skip Ho Chi Minh City.
Frequently asked questions about Ho Chi Minh City tours
There is plenty to do in Ho Chi Minh City, but it is a busy city with millions of residents and scooters everywhere. It promises to give an impression during your trip, but for some this can be too much and prefer to leave the city as soon as possible.
The best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City is in the dry season. This is in the months of December to April. But you can actually visit Ho Chi Minh City all year round. The city does not have to deal with violent natural phenomena (such as can occur in North and Central Vietnam) and the climate is actually always pleasant.
10 Ho Chi Minh City tours highlight
1. Cu Chi Tunnels
Crawl through the Vietnam War tunnels, watch out for the traps, shoot the shooting range and learn more about the war.
1. War Remnants Museum
Perhaps the best museum in the country. An impressive display of artifacts, photos and military vehicles that tell the story of the Vietnam War.
3. French colonial buildings
Between tall skyscrapers you will find French colonial buildings that are still in use today.
4. Street food tour by motorbike
Hop on the back of the motorcycle to explore the vibrant city and stop along the way to taste street food like a local.
5. Nightlife
The best nightlife can be found here; skyscrapers with a rooftop bar, beer stalls on the street, busy nightclubs, cozy bars and opera performances.
6. Reunification Palace
The place where the Vietnam War ended is now a museum. A visit takes you back to that time, since everything is still there from that time.
7. Bitexco Financial Tower
It was the tallest building in the city, but is still the most beautiful skyscraper. Upstairs you will find a restaurant and viewpoint.
8. Nguyen Hue Walking Street
The place where Vietnamese come in the evening for social life. A good insight into the daily life of the Saigoneers.
More authentic life can be found in the local markets throughout the city. From normal markets, to pet, flower and motorcycle markets.
10. Saigon River
Take a speedboat across the Saigon River to the Mekong Delta or take a dinner cruise with a view of the skyline.

From the heartbreaking War Remnants Museum to luxe shopping strips, gourmet restaurants to delectable street stalls, HCMC is a taste of all Vietnam has to offer. You’ll get to view the daily life of the city’s local traders as you are dazzled by the scents and a kaleidoscope of colours while we navigate through the narrow winding streets of the market before we explore the Saigon Chinatown.
Gaze At Cholon – Chinatown Saigon
Cholon, which directly translates to “Big Market”, was first established in the late 1700s when a large number of Hoa, an ethnic Chinese minority residing in Vietnam. Thien Hau is widely considered the most beautiful temple in the area and really worth paying a visit! After visiting this legendary temple, we will head to Secret Weapon Cellar.
Secret Saigon Underground
The NLF dug numerous secret cellars in the heart of Saigon to store weapons and explosives brought from rural bases such as Cu Chi for fighting against the South Government, particularly the 1968 Tet Offensive. Early in 1967 the house’s owner, Trần Văn Lai, dug two cellars underneath the house to store pistols, rifles, grenades and over 350kg of TNT were transported there in hollowed-out boxes and specially-adapted wickerwork baskets and plant pots. After visiting this historic place, we will head to the memorial of Thich Quang Duc who shocked the world by burning himself to death in 1963.
Learn From Different Perspectives During The Vietnam War!
Next, we will head back to the city centre to visit the fascinating War Remnants Museum. This will be an emotionally hard-hitting experience given the graphic content of the museum. Nevertheless, it will be a valuable stop for anybody wishing to learn more about different perspectives surrounding the Vietnam War and its continuing effects today.
Stop For A Tasty Local Lunch
After the museum, we’ll take a well-earned rest and enjoy a tasty Vietnamese set-menu lunch at an authentic restaurant. After we’ve fueled up on these delicious local dishes, it’s off to our first stop of the afternoon which will be the Reunification Palace. Here you’ll learn all about its important place in Vietnamese history.
An Afternoon Of Amazing Architecture
Our next stop will be the famous Notre Dame Cathedral and Central Post Office. Your knowledgeable guide will explain all the history behind these two incredible buildings. Your guide will show you the historic CIA building where one of the last U.S Helicopters flew out of Saigon in 1975. Next, we’ll walk you to visit more HCMC highlights including the Opera House, Hotel Continental, Rex Hotel and City Hall as well as viewing the mighty Bitexco.
Our Final Stop!
In order to wrap up a wonderful day, we recommend you to come up to Rex Hotel rooftop for the legendary “Five O’Clock Follies” cocktail or simply have a cup of coffee or tea at the Coffee Apartment. After the last stop, we will get you safely back to your hotel in the comfort of our private vehicle. Don’t forget to give a hug to your lovely guide and ask for recommendations from our local expert!

I now refer my friends, family and colleagues, as well as book all of my tours, accommodation and flights with Maika because I feel very lucky to have finally found an organisation in Asia that gives me the confidence to do so.
The tour was very well organized, and the guide spoke very good English. We got to see and experience so many things: Besides visiting a pagoda and Buddha statue, we also went on a boat ride (with a stop to enjoy a coconut drink) and visited local businesses producing rice paper, conical hats and mats. We had fresh fruit and tea for a snack and Pho soup for lunch which was delicious! We had such a good day and would highly recommend this tour!
We went on this tour, two families of four, with children aged 9-12 years old. We were really happy with it and highly recommend. Lin was our guide and she was fantastic, would really do a trip with her again. It was nice to do this privately and easy to adjust with Lin if needed. Maika helped us book the accommodation in Can Tho which we really appreciated. Would highly recommend and for sure do again.

You did a great job looking after all of our family of 7. The kids enjoyed all the tours and especially the Mekong cruise …as did we……because the kids were so happy we got to enjoy some time to ourselves too. I would recommend Maika Tours if your thinking of visiting Vietnam!

Local buses cover a good portion of the city. Travellers can also take a boat along the river, for a day trip to Củ Chi Tunnels or the Mekong Delta.

What other guests say about our tours and locals
"We did a full day private Mekong Delta tour with Huyen and were super happy! Huyen is not only very knowledgeable on the area and its history and customs, she also knows places that bigger tour groups just wouldn't get to. Everything from the drive down, to lunch and the different ways of travelling through the villages and canals was perfect. Thanks to Huyen, we saw and experienced a lot of things we wouldn't have otherwise."
Great and insightful tour with Ted
"We spend a few hours with Ted to visit Ho Chi Minh and understand the culture, the past, and the present of the city. It was really cool and insightful. Thank you so much, Ted, for sharing those stories with us! "
Great tour with Huyen
"My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our 3 hour tour of the main sights of Ho Chi Minh with the delightful Huyen. We learned so much and the time flew by. Huyen is not only very informative but very funny and a lot of fun. Highly recommend a tour with Huyen."
Local knowledge and colour
"Huyen conducted an excellent 6 tour tour for us of HCM City. We asked for “off the beaten track” and she delivered in spades. She navigated us through the markets, stopping to explain local foods and customs and for us to try treats. She provided us with a honest and insightful narrative of the difficult and traumatic past of Vietnam. She radiates enthusiasm, humour and engagement. "
An amazing way to explore Saigon
"We did our food tour with Elise on the first day of our trip. It was an excellent introduction to the city and to Vietnamese cuisine. Elise was incredibly knowledgeable about both and shared so much with us. It was a pleasure to spend the evening with her and the perfect way to start our trip. We strongly recommend Elise as your food tour guide."
Very special and memorable tour
"Thien took us (family of 5) to the Cu Chi tunnels and it was an incredible tour. The whole family mentioned the tour as a highlight of the entire Vietnam trip. Thien made sure that the tour is truly a private tour for our family distanced from huge crowds and long queues. She offered to take a longer trip to the original tunnels vs the shorter distanced and more crowded one. We appreciated the option and went with her proposed longer drive and it was very special to be in the village and experience the tunnels narrated by the stories from Thien. We would definitely recommend this tour with Thien to everyone. "
Great foodtour
"We had a perfect tour with Elise! She told us a lot about Saigon and we had the opportunity to taste different food! It was very delicious all the time! Thanks a lot Elise! "
Review about Thien
"A very professional and fun guide. Her knowledge of Saigon and the tunnels made the day truly remarkable. Especially as it is so historically close to her family. Thien moved the dates at short notice when she didn’t have to and it is greatly appreciated. Thanks for an unforgettable day. "
Wunderful experience
"This was a great trip through HSMC/Saigon with Thien. We learned so much about the history of the City and Vietnam, about the wonderful culture and we visited all the relevant places in HCMC. Thank you Thien, that was just a perfect trip! "
We had great days with Thien
"It’s great to have Thien as a guide. She took us to the Mekong Delta’s hidden spots and to the Tunnels. Both tours were absolutely great; we felt like we were the only tourists (also at the tunnels)! Thien is a very smart and funny lady and speaks English fluently. So don’t hesitate and go on an adventure with Thien :) "

1 Day in Ho Chi Minh: The Perfect Itinerary for First-Timers
So, you’re heading to Vietnam and would like to spend 1 Day in Ho Chi Minh City? Then this post is for you.
Previously known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam’s largest city. This is the first place I visited during my trip to this country and I stayed here for about two weeks in total (I visited HCMC three times).
HCMC is the best place to dive into history and learn more about the Vietnam War. But this city is also home to bustling markets and interesting landmarks.
In this guide, you will find the best things to do in Ho Chi Minh in one day. It’s full of insider tips and you will also find a useful travel guide at the end of this post. It includes the best time to visit, how to get around and more.
So, let’s dive right into it, here are the best places to visit in a day ni HCMC!

10 Best Things to Do in Ho Chi Minh in 1 Day
1. visit the war remnants museum.
If you’re asking me, Ho Chi Minh’s War Remnants Museum alone makes this city worth visiting. Visiting this museum is one of these bucket list experiences in Southeast Asia , especially if you’re a history lover.
This museum houses many photographs, documents, weapons and other artefacts related to the war and it’s one of the most interesting museums I ever visited. It does a great job documenting the atrocities of the Vietnam War and the impact it had on civilians.
🇻🇳 If you would like to learn more about the Vietnam War (and if you have enough time), the Cu Chi Tunnels, located 40 km (25 mi) from HCMC, are worth visiting too.
2. Admire the Saigon Central Post Office
The Saigon Central Post Office is a beautiful example of French colonial architecture. It was built between 1886 and 1891 by the French architect and engineer Gustave Eiffel, who’s most famous for designing the Eiffel Tower in Paris .
This is the largest post office in Vietnam and it quickly became one of Ho Chi Minh’s most iconic symbols.
What I loved the most about this post office is that, once you step inside, you feel as if you’re stepping back in time. The interior consists of one big hall with beautiful arches and mosaic tiles. The postal counters can be found on both sides of the room and there’s a large portrait of the Vietnamese Communist revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh on the wall.
💌 This is still a functioning post office, so if you want to send postcards to your loved ones, the Saigon Post Office is the perfect place to mail them!
3. Stop by the City Hall and Ho Chi Minh Statue
The Ho Chi Minh Statue is just a 5-minute walk from the Saigon Central Post Office (#2 on this list) and it’s worth stopping by when you’re in the neighbourhood.
Ho Chi Minh was the president of Vietnam from 1945 to 1969 and as HCMC was named after him, a visit to this city would be incomplete without seeing his statue.
The statue is located right in front of the City Hall, which is worth checking out too. This colonial building was built in the early 1900s and it’s also known as the People’s Committee Building. Note that as this is a government building, it’s not possible to enter it.
4. See the Notre Dame Cathedral
Built by the French between 1863 and 1880, the Notre Dame Cathedral is the largest catholic church in Vietnam and one of the country’s four basilicas. In the olden days, this is where French colonialists would come to attend the mass and pray.
The cathedral was built in Neo-Romanesque and Gothic architectural style and it features two towering bell towers. It’s one of Ho Chi Minh’s most famous landmarks and one that cannot be missed during a visit to this city.
5. Explore Nguyen Van Binh Book Street
The Nguyen Van Binh Book Street is one of the best places to visit in Ho Chi Minh for book lovers! Here, you will find plenty of great bookshops and cosy cafes.
This street was named after Vietnamese intellectual Nguyen Van Binh in 2000, but it changed names a couple of times before that. It’s one of Ho Chi Minh’s oldest streets and it was named Hong Kong Street during the French colonial period.
It’s good to know that you will find a great variety of books here. Many of them are in English and themes range from classic literature to politics and science.

6. Visit the Independence Palace
If you’re spending 1 day in Ho Chi Minh City, the Independence Palace is one of these places that cannot be missed.
Also known as the Reunification Hall, it was the home and office of the Vietnamese president during the Vietnam War. The Independence Palace, built in 1962, replaced the Saigon Governor’s Palace after it was bombed.
Here, you can visit the palace’s enormous rooms. Some of the most important ones are the presidential office, the conference room and the war room. There’s also an exhibition building where you can learn more about the palace and the history of Saigon.
7. Go to the Cafe Apartments
The Cafe Apartments is one of Ho Chi Minh’s most unique sites! This nine-story building was built in the 1960s and it originally housed dormitories for government and military personnel.
In 2010, however, this building was completely transformed and it now houses cafe apartments, a new concept in HCMC. You will find plenty of cosy, locally-owned restaurants, cafes and shops here.
This is a place I loved visiting when I was in Ho Chi Minh. The concept is truly unique – I’ve never seen anything like it!
🥗 The Cafe Apartments are the perfect place to stop for lunch, a drink or a snack. I had coffee and pie at Partea and it was delicious.
8. See the View from the Bitexco Financial Tower
With its, 262.5 m (861 ft) the Bitexco Financial Tower is the second-tallest building in Ho Chi Minh (Landmark 81 surpassed it in 2018). This was the tallest building in Vietnam when it was completed in 2010, though.
One of the best things to do in Ho Chi Minh is to visit this building’s Skydeck that’s located on the 49th floor. You will have a spectacular, 360-degree view of the city from here.
🎫 Get a skip-the-line ticket to the Bitexco Financial Tower to save time!
9. Visit the Ben Thanh Market
The Ben Thanh Market is one of Ho Chi Minh’s most popular markets. You will find over a thousand stalls here, selling anything from dried fruits and nuts to local handicrafts and art. This is a great place to shop for Vietnamese souvenirs .
Apart from being a great place to go shopping, the Ben Thanh Market also has a rich history. It was built by French colonialists between 1912 and 1914. Although many restorations took place here, the exterior structure and clock tower have been preserved.
This is a place I loved strolling around in and I bought a handfan here.
💰 Make sure to haggle before buying something at this market, the prices are not fixed and vendors tend to overcharge tourists.
10. Explore Bui Vien Street
Also known as “Western Street”, Bui Vien is the backpacker’s street of Saigon and it’s full of restaurants, bars and pubs. Chances are you will also find music shows and street performers here.
This is the perfect place to head if you would like to experience the city’s nightlife. But even if partying isn’t really your thing, it’s a nice place to catch the lively atmosphere in the evening.
Some of this street’s most popular bars are Cloud 9 Bar, Boheme and Hair of the Dog. I have to admit I didn’t check out any of them myself (I’m not much of a partygoer), but I’ve heard great things about them.

Best Time to Visit HCMC
HCMC is one of the best winter destinations in Asia . The best time to visit this city is between December and April, this is when the weather will be at its best. You can find an overview of the seasons in South Vietnam below:
- Dry season (December to March): The dry season is the best time to visit HCMC, the weather will be nice and dry at this time of the year. You can expect temperatures around 30°C (86°F).
- Rainy season (April to November): In the wet season, it will rain a lot and humidity will be high. Temperatures usually fluctuate around 33°C (91,4°F) at this time of the year. I visited Ho Chi Minh in November and it wasn’t that bad, though, there were quite some showers but they never lasted very long.
How to Get Around Ho Chi Minh
While walking is a great way to explore a new city, if you only have one day in Ho Chi Minh, you might want to opt for a faster way to get around the city.
- Motor taxi: The cheapest and most efficient way to get around Ho Chi Minh is with the motor taxi. You can easily order one with the Grab app .
- Taxi: Taking a taxi is the most comfortable way to get around the city, but it’s also the most expensive one (Vietnam is one of the cheapest countries in Asia , though, so it’s pretty affordable).
- Scooter: If you feel confident, you can rent a scooter in HCMC. I rented one for a couple of days when I was there, but it was the most stressful place I’ve ever driven one due to the crazy traffic.
Where to Stay in Ho Chi Minh
There are many hotels, hostels and guesthouses in HCMC. There’s truly something here for any taste and budget. You can find my top recommendations below.:
- La Siesta Hotel ( ⭐ 9.4/10, $$$): La Siesta Hotel is the place to be if you want to indulge yourself in luxury. This is one of Ho Chi Minh’s top hotels, featuring magnificent rooms, an outdoor swimming pool and a fitness and spa.
- Leiden Homestay ( ⭐ 9.8/10, $$): This charming homestay is centrally located. It offers spacious, beautifully decorated rooms and it’s set in a quiet environment. It’s one of the best places to stay in HCMC for those on a mid-range budget.
- Vy Da Central Market Hostel ( ⭐ 8.7/10, $): This is a great place to stay if you’re on a tight budget. Vy Da Central Market Hostel is perfectly located and offers clean beds in a dormitory.
