The 2023 Sanford International final leaderboard is headed by winner Steve Stricker, who earned the win on the 2023 PGA Tour Champions schedule at Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls, S.D..
Stricker wound up winning this event once again on the PGA Tour Champions with a one-shot win over Y.E. Yang, taking the 54-hole event on 16-under 194 on the back of a final-round 4-under 66.
Joe Durant completed the medal stand in this event, two shots behind the former PGA Championship winner.
Stricker won the $300,000 winner's share of the $2,000,000 purse.
Sanford International recap notes
Stricker wins the 23rd PGA Tour Champions title of the year, getting into the winner's circle again on the 50-plus tour.
The money Stricker -- and every player in the field -- earned is converted into Charles Schwab Cup points, with every dollar converted into two points during the Charles Schwab Cup playoffs.
There is no cut on PGA Tour Champions-run events, including the major championships they run. Every pro who finished the tournament was paid.
The 2023 PGA Tour Champions schedule continues next week at the Pure Insurance Championship at Pebble Beach.

New PGA Tour Champions golf tournament begins in Bradenton this week. What to know
- Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below
The text message last week wasn’t a total surprise for Billy Andrade.
The United States vice captain had a conversation a few months ago with captain Jim Furyk about Furyk’s back not feeling great.
“Just be ready, be prepared,” Andrade said Wednesday of the conversation.
Then, Andrade said, Furyk let him know he couldn’t play.
Andrade is stepping in to fill the void as Team USA battles Team Europe and Team International in the inaugural World Champions Cup at the Concession Golf Club in East Manatee.
The PGA Tour Champions tournament begins Thursday, with ESPN and ABC airing the action through Sunday’s final round. The format features Scotch sixsomes, sixball and singles matches. However, unlike the Ryder Cup and President’s Cup, the World Champions Cup is a stroke play competition over nine holes.
In Scotch sixsomes, both players in each two-man team tee off with alternate shot played into the hole after a tee shot is picked. Two points are awarded to the team with the lowest score, the next lowest receives one point and the highest score gets zero points.
The team with the most points at the conclusion of Sunday’s singles matches wins the tournament, with each team member getting $100,000 of the $1.35 million purse.
World Champions Cup set to begin in Bradenton
Andrade’s inclusion as a player due to Furyk’s back injury means he’ll join Steve Stricker, Justin Leonard, Brett Quigley, David Toms and Jerry Kelly as players to watch on Team USA this week.
“Every hole is its own tournament, really, and you’re trying to win each hole,” Andrade said about the tournament format using stroke play compared to traditional match play.
The U.S. faces an International side comprised of captain Ernie Els, Vijay Singh, Retief Goosen, K.J. Choi, Stephen Ames and Steven Alker and a European team with captain Darren Clarke , Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomerie, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, Robert Karlsson and Alex Čejka.
And they’ll do it at the Concession, an East Manatee golf course that plays tough on approach shots and around the greens.
“The greens are pretty treacherous. They’re difficult, they’re elevated and they have so many runoffs and collection areas on all sides,” World Champions Cup tournament chairman Peter Jacobsen said. “So I think this is more of a second shot golf course than it is a tee ball golf course. Fairways are pretty generous, pretty wide. When Tony Jacklin and Jack Nicklaus designed it, I think they had the intent of making it pretty easy off the tee. Not easy, but wide.”
“But I think the precision is asked for on the second shots. And on and around the greens, that is where matches are won or lost. So you’re going to see a lot of chipping. I’ve always said on The Concession Golf Club, players that have the more superior short game are going to be the ones that come out on top.”
Clarke was in the area last year for some tarpon fishing, but he also got in a round at the Concession.
“I really enjoyed the golf course,” Clarke said. “It was brilliant.”
But it’s also a hard test.
“Even when you think you’ve got an opportunity with like a sand wedge or a wedge in your hand, you’ve got to be so precise to not catch the wrong slope,” Clarke said. “Because you can hit a good shot and it just trickles down off a slope and then you’ve got no shot from there. So it’s challenging, to say the least.”
Thursday’s sixball session begins at 9:30 a.m. Tickets and more information are available at www.worldchampionscup.com/ticket-information/ .

Bernhard Langer returns from Achilles tear next week
W orld Golf Hall of Famer Bernhard Langer will return to action next week for the first time since tearing an Achilles tendon in February.
The PGA's Champions Tour announced Friday that the 66-year-old German will compete in the Insperity Invitational from May 3-5 in The Woodlands, Texas, an event he has won four times.
"This tournament has a special place in my heart," Langer said. "It was my first victory out here on the PGA TOUR Champions in 2007, and it is just a fantastic event all around. I am looking forward to making my return to competition in The Woodlands."
Langer underwent surgery on Feb. 2 to repair the Achilles injury sustained while playing pickleball.
Langer won the U.S. Senior Open and the Chubb Classic last year to give him a record 46 career Champions Tour victories, besting Hale Irwin's 45. Since joining the tour in 2007, he has won 12 senior major tournaments.
Langer is a six-time winner of the senior tour's Charles Schwab Cup championship, most recently in 2021. He won three times on the PGA Tour, including twice at the Masters in 1985 and 1993.

Bernhard langer set for return three months after achilles surgery.

Three months after tearing his Achilles tendon and undergoing surgery, Bernhard Langer is scheduled to return on the PGA Tour Champions.
Langer’s injury occurred while playing pickleball on Feb 1. He had surgery the next day and had to miss what was supposed to be his final Masters appearance earlier this month.
The two-time green jacket winner and World Golf Hall of Fame member said in a statement on Friday, however, that he was all-systems-go for next week’s Insperity Invitational on the PGA Tour Champions.

Langer is the tour’s all-time winner, with 46 titles. He’s a four-time champion at this event and has won 28 events after the age of 57.
“Statistically, they say that guys win the most tournaments from age 50 to 55 on the PGA Tour Champions, and then they kind of drop off. I’m trying to continue to prove them wrong,” said the 66-year-old Langer. “This tournament has a special place in my heart. It was my first victory out here on the PGA Tour Champions in 2007, and it is just a fantastic event all around.”
The tournament will be held May 3-5 at The Woodlands Country Club in The Woodlands, Texas.

2024 Zurich Classic leaderboard, scores: Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry among leaders after Round 1
Mcilroy and lowry headline a crowded leaderboard as the competition moves to foursomes for friday.
There aren't many firsts left for Rory McIlroy to achieve in his PGA Tour career, but he checked one off the list Thursday at TPC Louisiana. Making his debut appearance in the Zurich Classic, the 34-year-old looked like the seasoned veteran he is alongside Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry. The two fired an 11-under 61 in the four-ball format amid the windy afternoon conditions to sit with the teams of Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard, Aaron Rai and David Lipsky and Ben Kohles and Patton Kizzire atop the leaderboard after Round 1.
While this week marks McIlroy's first attempt at claiming the PGA Tour's annual team event, it also represents his 11th start of the year as he continues to play through some relative early season struggles. McIlroy had no issues in the first round as he drove the ball beautifully, struck towering iron shots and picked apart the par-72 layout in unison with Lowry.
"You know that you sort of need to get off to a good start, and thankfully we did," McIlroy said. "We were 4 under through 4, which was really nice to see, and from there you've got some momentum and you're just trying to keep it going. But for the most part today, we kept both balls in play. We were having two looks basically on every hole at birdie, and that's the way you need to play better ball. Everyone thinks it's maybe a bit more gung ho than that, but as long as you have two balls in play off the tee, two balls on the green, I think you're always going to do pretty well in this format."
The two began their days with four birdies out the gate and tacked on a couple more to turn in 6-under 30. A birdie on No. 10 was followed with a disappointing par on the par-5 11th, but that did nothing to dampen their spirits. McIlroy struck his best iron of the day into the 12th when he feathered an 8 iron against the wind and to tap-in distance.

Lowry picked him up on the very next hole with a birdie of his own to get the team to 9 under and added another on the difficult par-3 14th to get to double digits under par. With four holes remaining, the two appeared likely to overtake the clubhouse lead, but a couple middling pars to go along with one last birdie on the par-5 18th meant there will be four teams sleeping on the lead tonight before the competition transitions to foursomes on Friday.
Let's take a look around the rest of the leaderboard after the first round in Louisiana.
The leaders
T1. Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry, David Lipsky/Aaron Rai, Ryan Brehm/Mark Hubbard, Ben Kohles/Patton Kizzire (-11)
Outside McIlroy and Lowry, the top of the leaderboard is surprising, to say the least. Hubbard has notched a couple top 20s, a top five and has yet to miss a cut this season while Rai has been solid, but the rest of the lot haven't seen the weekend with much consistency. Hubbard's teammate, Brehm, has seven missed cuts in 11 starts. Rai's teammate, Lipsky, has missed eight cuts in 11 starts and is without a top 40. Kizzire has six missed cuts and a withdrawal in nine starts, and Kohles has six missed cuts and a withdrawal in 11 starts. Four-ball can hide deficiencies, but the same cannot be said for foursomes, which will be played Friday and Sunday.
"Just like usual, we ham-and-egged it," Hubbard said. "I don't think either of us were feeling amazing about our games coming into the day, but we just feed off each other really well. We relax each other out there, and best ball is just a fun format. I didn't putt great last week, but he had a lot of holes where he snuggled it up there nice and close for par and it really freed me up. You just kind of get confidence that way, and I think even you watching me make some putts gave you confidence and you poured them in at the end."
Other contenders
T5. Davis Thompson/Andrew Novak, Thomas Detry/Robert MacIntyre, Cameron Champ/MJ Daffue (-10) T8. Sam Stevens/Paul Barjon, Garrick Higgo/Ryan Fox, Luke List/Henrik Norlander, Corey Conners/Taylor Pendrith, Zac Blair/Patrick Fishburn, Marc Meissner/Austin Smotherman, Callium Tarren/David Skinns, Keith Mitchell/Joel Dahmen (-9)
Detry and MacIntyre got off to a dream start by playing their first four holes in 4 under. After hitting a lull, the two turned it on and carded six back-nine birdies to shoot 10-under 62. MacIntyre has the team experience from this past fall's Ryder Cup, while Detry has been enjoying a very solid 2024 campaign. The staying power of all these teams on this leaderboard is interesting given the volatility of foursomes, but the two Europeans should be up to the task.
I think it's about leaving each other to it," MacIntyre said regarding Friday's strategy. "We're both good players, both know what we're doing with the golf ball. It's just trusting each other. If I hit a good shot, you hit a good shot. If you hit a bad shot, don't say sorry, you're not meaning to do it. You just keep walking forward and keep trying to hit good shots and committing to them and see where we end up. Can't really do anything about it. It's difficult because you might not hit a 5-foot putt until the 17th hole. It's completely different. All you can do is try your best."
2024 Zurich Classic updated odds, picks
Odds via Sportsline consensus
- Rory McIlroy/Shane Lowry: 13/5
- Xander Schauffele/Patrick Cantlay: 10-1
- Aaron Rai/David Lipsky: 15-1
- Thomas Detry/Robert MacIntyre: 16-1
- Andrew Novak/David Thompson: 16-1
- Nick Taylor/Adam Hadwin: 18-1
- Corey Conners/Taylor Pendrith: 18-1
- Joel Dahmen/Keith Mitchell: 20-1
Let's roll with the 2022 champion at 10-1. Schauffele and Cantlay burned a ton of edges on Thursday but kept themselves in it with a late flurry of birdies. They now transition to foursomes for two of the next three days where they were dominant a year ago. In 2023, the two fired a 9-under 63 in Round 2 and a 6-under 66 in Round 4 in this format. If they card something similar in the mid 60s tomorrow, they should be in business heading into the weekend.
