Discover the history, culture and cuisine of Thailand on this river cruise of the ancient city of Ayutthaya  from Bangkok. Spend two or three unforgettable days aboard the traditional Thanatharee barge !

Ayutthaya Historical Park

Day 1: Bangkok - Ayutthaya

After picking you up from your hotel in central Bangkok between 7:30 am and 8 am, we'll take you by minibus to  Ayutthaya , the former capital of the ancient Kingdom of Siam where our boat will be waiting for us. We'll spend the next two or three days aboard the  Thanatharee , a  fully restored traditional Thai wooden barge . What better vessel to delve into the history and culture of Thailand?

We'll then head to the  Chao Sam Phraya National Museum . After discovering the impressive collection of historic treasures and artefacts from the ancient city of Ayutthaya, we'll embark on a  bike ride around the Ayutthaya Historical Park . This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to the ruins of the old city and is one of the most important archaeological complexes in Thailand . We'll explore its fascinating palaces and temples by bike, keeping an eye out for the famous Buddha's head - will we find where it's hiding?

Having made the most of our time in the historical park, we'll enjoy a  delicious dinner aboard the Thanatharee . Indulge in different mouth-watering delicacies of Thai cuisine, like chicken fried with cashew nuts, tom kha gai or coconut chicken soup, chicken wings and much more.

Day 2: Ayutthaya - Bangkok

Wake up first thing in the morning for a unique experience: we'll prepare some traditional sweets and offer food to the local monks  on their daily alms round. Afterwards, we'll enjoy our own breakfast on board the boat while taking in the beautiful views from the river.

With renewed energy, we'll grab our bikes again and set off on a tour of Ayutthaya to learn about its traditional culture. After a delicious lunch on board the boat, we'll return to  Bangkok  where we'll say goodbye. You'll be dropped back off at your hotel in the Thai capital around 4:30 pm.

3 Day Cruise

When making your reservation, you'll have the choice to extend your stay on the iconic  Thanatharee  boat for another day. If you choose this option, after lunch on the second day we'll explore a  local market  to immerse ourselves in local daily life. Then, on the third day, we'll visit local communities where we'll continue learning all about the culture and traditions of Ayutthaya .

Accommodation

This two or three day cruise includes one or two nights' full board accommodation on board the Thantharee , a  restored traditional wooden barge . You'll sleep in private double cabins with a shared bathroom. Children must stay with at least one adult and the maximum capacity of each cabin is three people.

What people love about 3 day thailand tours.

Arja (Jane) was an awesome guide! Totally recommend if you only have a couple of days and wanna learn about Thai culture and WW2.
The tour was a good experience as it was kinda unique in a different way. Our guide , Suchin Temo was excellent and an added asset to your company indeed! Driver was nice and a safe one too. The only complain to this trip was accommodation. Hot water services was inadequate in most of the hotels (Doi Maesalong, has intermittent hot water and Diamond Park Inn ) has no elevator and AC was blowing hot air all night. Most of the hotel staff (receptionists & resto staff can not speak English or can hardly understand English at all. NEEDS IMPROVEMENT !!!
Must do! This tour made our vacation and couldn’t have been happier. Tour guide was fantastic, driver was safe and professional, hotel was fancy and centrally located in Old Town. Highly recommend!

Loy Dream on the river

The Loy Dream Cruise delivers a lavish and intimate way for just four guests to experience the ‘Land of Smiles’ along Thailand’s majestic Chao Phraya River. The vessel is an historic teak rice barge, which has been impeccably restored and reincarnated as a delightful river cruise ship that takes her cue from a bygone era of travel.

You can expect graceful décor, white-glove hospitality ‒ including round-the-clock butler attention ‒ gourmet meals prepared by a private chef and the services of an expert tour guide well-versed in regional history.

Only Two Staterooms

Ornately decorated in polished mahogany and teak, the two Staterooms on the Loy Dream each offer 269 square feet of fully air-conditioned living space, with design evoking the charms of old Siam. Each has an en-suite bathroom designed in soothing marine colors and equipped with herbal soaps, a hairdryer, every modern comfort and amenity.

Each stateroom is supplied with luxurious bedding, soft bathrobes, slippers, a vanity area, make-up mirror and a safe deposit box. Regular and feather pillows are provided for extra comfort.

Gourmet Dining

Presented in the dining room with exceptional views of the water, the daily-changing Michelin starred menu by the acclaimed Thai chef, Thitid “Ton” Tassanakajohn, of Le Du Bangkok restaurant, features Royal Thai cuisine and European dishes, with locally sourced produce.

You can also look forward to afternoon tea and sunset cocktails served with canapés such as tiger prawn wrapped bacon, and coriander tofu skewer with peanut sauce. Decadent brunches feature delights such as Canadian lobsters, an oyster bar, and caviar paired with fine wines.

Aboard The Loy Dream

The Loy Dream’s sophisticated interiors showcase traditional craftsmanship and regional influences evoking the heritage of old Siam. Relax on the Sun Deck sipping Champagne or savoring lavish afternoon teas. Watch life along the river unfold from the comfort of your elegant Dream Stateroom.

Relish a traditional Thai massage, while you’re on board, administered by skilled therapists who will stretch and pull your body through a variety of poses to stimulate your blood flow, reduce stress, increase your flexibility and boost your energy.

Entertainment

Communal areas have been purposely designed to host sunrise yoga, traditional dance performances and other activities promoting cultural immersion. Something marvelous to watch during your voyage is a Muay Thai demonstration; this martial art, which is unique to Thailand, was developed several hundred years ago and is a form of close-body combat that utilises the whole body as a weapon.

On Shore Activities

Every day is filled with adventure, serendipitous moments and discoveries. Guided excursions might include cycling on Bang Kachao island, a tuk-tuk ride around the royal palaces, and walks around the UNESCO World Heritage Site ancient town of Ayutthaya.

During your exploration of some of the region’s most spectacular sacred temples, you can participate in Thai rituals ranging from feeding the fish and encouraging the cycle of life, to making a donation to the monks.

This entire exquisite barge is yours to commandeer for parties of up to four looking for an unforgettable vacation. A magnificent way to celebrate a special occasion.

Itineraries & Prices

All itineraries are subject to change due to seasonal weather conditions (and resultant variations in river and tributary water levels) affecting accessibility to locations. Thus navigation routes, times and excursions may need to be modified at the cruise captain’s or your guide's discretion.

Thailand, Bangkok Marble Temple

From Ancient Temples to Modern Towers

Thailand cruises.

Whether you're seeking paradise islands or contemplative temples, Thailand has it all.

Thailand is unique in Southeast Asia – it's the only country that never capitulated to a foreign power, so its culture and character remain distinctive and intact. You'll see it as you eat your way through varieties of spicy noodles at Bangkok's street food markets, take an hour for quiet contemplation in the temples of Chiang Mai or bask in the vibrant colors of Krabi and Phuket. Cruise to Thailand to explore stunning beaches like Kata Noi and Ya Nui near Phuket, glide down the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok in a traditional Thai boat or adventure through the country's historic spots and see the Buddhas at the Grand Palace and the Wat Pho Temple.

Thailand, Phuket Island

LEAVE THE LAND BEHIND

No matter where your Thailand cruise calls, a beautiful beach isn't far away. Sun yourself on the beaches of Krabi, or head out on a boating expedition in Bangkok or Phuket. Either way, you'll fall in love with the turquoise waters of Thailand.

Thailand, Boats by Railey Beach

THAI TAXI TRIPS

Long-tail boats are more than just pretty things to photograph, though you'll surely be called to snap a few photos of them. As far as southern Thailand's seafarers are concerned, they're the original taxi. If you're up for a getaway, hop onto one of these water taxis for a day trip from Krabi or Phuket to quiet islands like Koh Poda or party spots like Koh Phi Phi.

Thailand, Krabi Beach

BEACH-YA YOU WON'T WANT TO LEAVE

All of Thailand's beaches are amazing, but you're sure to notice some important differences. While the islands of the Andaman Sea (to the west and south of Phuket) feature dramatic cliffs and fluorescent waters, white sand and more muted shades of turquoise define the experience of swimming in the Gulf of Thailand south of Bangkok . No matter where you take a dip, though, you'll be in paradise.

Thailand, Scuba Diving Training

SEAS THE DAY

Thailand's Koh Tao island is one of the world's most affordable and enjoyable places to SCUBA dive or get certified. Don't have time for a course? You can get amazing underwater views when you snorkel, so be sure to bring your underwater camera.

Thailand, Bangkok Grand Palace

INLAND ADVENTURES

Thais are rightfully proud of their heritage, from the long-ruling Chakri dynasty to hundreds of years of Theravada Buddhism. From ancient culture to the pulse of modern Bangkok, you'll find a unique mix of the historic and the contemporary in Thailand with your cruise holiday.

Chicken Pad Thai

SAVOUR THE FLAVOUR

Thailand's street food scene boasts quick, delicious meals to fuel you as you adventure through the cities. Don't be afraid to dive into local delicacies during your holiday, or pair familiar favourites like Pad Thai noodles and green curry chicken with tangy  Som Tam  papaya salad or crispy  Khaaw Muu Grop  pork belly with rice.

Thailand, Monkey by a Buddhist Pagoda Ruins

MONKEY AROUND IN THAILAND

Thailand offers a ton of opportunities to responsibly get wild. Ethical establishments like the Gibbon Rehabilitation Centre in Phuket allow visitors to honour nature as they observe it, and at Khao Yai National Park, a less-than-two-hour drive from Bangkok, you can see elephants roam the land before you raft below thundering waterfalls.

Thailand, Chiang Mai

CITY AND COUNTRY

While Thailand's temples give you a peek into ancient history, its cities offer more modern adventures. Explore award-winning shopping malls like Bangkok's Siam Paragon, or enjoy a panorama from the viewing deck of Baiyoke Sky Tower. To glimpse local culture, visit rice fields outside Chiang Mai or the villages of Phuket.

Thailand, Phang Bay Traditional Long Tail Boat

Start your Southeast Asian Adventure in Thailand

While Krabi and Phuket have world-class beaches, you can find beautiful views all over Southeast Asia. Continue sailing southward toward Malaysia, where islands like Langkawi and Penang fuse amazing Andaman scenery with a mix of eclectic cultures. Southeast Asia is a wonderland for urban travellers, too. See the skyscrapers of Kuala Lumpur and Hanoi, explore ancient cities like Hong Kong or take advantage of world-class shopping, from Singapore's upmarket Orchard Road to the rough-and-tumble markets of Ho Chi Minh City.

Thailand, Phuket Islands

THE PHUKET PERARL

While Phuket is where many travellers arrive in Thailand, it is also the perfect start to a Southeast Asian journey. Take long-tail boat trips to Koh Phi Phi or Koh Khao Phing Kan (aka 'James Bond Island'), or explore the inland part of the island, where you can walk the streets of old-town Phuket or enjoy a panorama from atop the aptly named 'Big Buddha'.

Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam Ben Duoc Temple

STEP INTO SOUTHEAST ASIA

Thailand is both a cross-section of Southeast Asia and a gateway to the region. Cruise through the Andaman Sea to Malaysia, or sail into the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea to explore destinations like Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines . By adventuring through Southeast Asia, you're sure to see the region come alive.

Basic English is broadly spoken in areas of Thailand where tourists often visit, but learning some basic Thai will earn you many smiles.

Service of alcohol in Thailand is prohibited before 11 a.m. and between 2-5 p.m., so be sure to head to the bar at the right times.

To show respect for local customs, remove your shoes whenever entering a temple or a local person's home.

CUISINE HOW TO SAY 'DELICIOUS' IN THAI

Thai can be a difficult language for non-natives, but you should definitely learn the word  aroi , which means 'delicious'. It'll be the perfect way to describe the indulgent cuisine of the area, full of bright spices, pungent fish sauce and tangy vinegar.

Pad Thai Traditional Noodles

WOK THIS WAY

Whether you eat it with shrimp, pork or chicken, few Thai dishes are more satisfying than stir-fried noodles, also known as pad thai. Stop by one of the food stalls on Charoen Krung Road or another of Bangkok's popular street food spots, where pad thai is traditionally cooked up with tangy-sweet paste of tamarind, a tropical fruit.

Thai Green Curry with Chicken

Spicy, creamy green curry is even more delicious in Thailand than it is at home. The creamy coconut milk base of this comforting Thai classic is made with fragrant green chilies, lemongrass, ginger and garlic. Make sure to order rice, since the dish is served a la carte here.

Green Papaya Salad

PAPAYA PRIDE

There's no better way to get a taste of Thailand's northeast Isaan cuisine than som tam, a salad made with shredded green papaya, fresh tomatoes, dried prawns, a squeeze of lime juice and as much or as little chilli as you like.

Related Ports

Explore the bustling streets of Bangkok, tasting your way through street-food vendors and side-stepping tuk tuk rickshaws. Swim in crystal clear blue waters surrounded by dramatic cliffs and rocks in Phuket. Or make your way to neighboring Malaysia to experience Penang and Kuala Lumpur.

It’s Amazon Prime Day!

The annual sales event began on July 16 and will run through the 17, and right now, a new offer on Kindle Unlimited is available alongside Kindle Prime Day deals .

Of course, Amazon is known for year-round sales but deals on things like Kindle Unlimited are more rare.

Right now, Amazon Prime members can get three months of Amazon’s library-esque reading subscription for free.

Kindle Unlimited is normally priced at $11.99/month, so this is a pretty great deal if you ask us, and it comes just in time for all of the summer reading you can do on your waterproof Kindle .

Read all the books you want and save $36 in the process? Sign us up.

Most currently active deals, including the Audible deal and this Kindle Unlimited offer, are only for Amazon Prime subscribers.

If you aren’t one already, you’ll need to be anyway to shop the rest of the sales, and who can resist a free trial? The 30-day trial will take you through Prime Day. A Prime membership costs $14.99/month or $139/year, and in addition to access to exclusive de als , you’ll gain access to free books on Prime Reading , original shows and movies on the Prime Video streaming service, and so much more.

Kindle Unlimited

Two black tablets side by side

Kindle Unlimited  is a subscription-based service for readers who primarily read e-books. If you read just two KU books a month, the subscription pays for itself.

Similar to a library (only paid), subscribers can borrow and hold up to 20 books at a time in a digital library. There’s also included access to select audiobooks and popular magazines.

Kindle Unlimited’s catalog changes often, with books coming off of and joining the service all of the time. However, once you borrow a book, it stays in your library until you return it, even if that book is no longer available to borrow on Kindle Unlimited.

We recommend borrowing books as soon as you see them even if you don’t plan on reading them right away, because they could be gone between when you first spot them and when you decide to read them.

Kindle Unlimited’s library is made up of over four million titles, per Amazon, and we’ve found that there seems to be a particular emphasis on romance novels and thrillers.

Not sure what to borrow? Here are some of the most popular titles you can expect to see right now:

  • “ The Housemaid” by Freida McFadden
  • “The Duke and I” by Julia Quinn (the inspiration for “Bridgerton” Season 1!)
  • “My Lady Jane” by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows
  • “Yours Truly” by Abby Jimenez
  • “Red, White & Royal Blue” by Casey McQuiston
  • “Things We Never Got Over” by Lucy Score

Thailand expands visa-free travel for 93 countries, including Australia

tourists in thailand

Thailand has expanded its visa-free travel for Australians from 30 days to 60 days as part of a new tourism scheme.

The visa can be extended up to 30 days more through the Thai immigration bureau.

Ninety-three countries and territories are eligible for the new scheme, up from 57 previously.

On Monday, Thailand also announced relaxed rules for several other visa categories.

The validity of "digital nomad" visas for self-employed, remote workers will increase to five years from 60 days, with each stay limited to 180 days.

The country will also allow visiting students, who earn a bachelor's degree or higher in Thailand, to stay for one year after graduation to find a job or travel.

The changes, which came into effect on Monday, are part of the South-East Asian nation's latest efforts to boost travel and tourism.

Tourism is a key driver of Thailand's economy and a big source of employment, but it has struggled since the pandemic.

Thailand recorded 17.5 million foreign tourists in the first six months of 2024, the tourism ministry said, up 35 per cent from the same period a year earlier.

Foreign arrivals generated revenue of 825 billion baht ($34 billion), data showed.

In pre-pandemic 2019, Thailand welcomed a record 39.9 million arrivals, generating 1.91 trillion baht ($79 billion).

2,000+ US flights canceled: United, American Airlines resume service after global outage

  • A global IT outage caused delays and cancellations for air passengers around the world.
  • Several U.S. carriers, including American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines, issued ground stops for all their flights early on Friday due to communication problems.
  • The aviation sector is hit particularly hard due to its sensitivity to timings.

William Sikora III was supposed to fly from Philadelphia to Detroit on Friday morning.

“We are stuck at this airport,” he posted in a video on X at 6 a.m., zooming in on blue airport screens showing system errors. “United, Delta, America, all this stuff is down. People are just sitting here. The apps still say our flight’s on time because they can’t update information in the apps.”

Air passengers around the world faced delays, cancellations and problems checking in as airports and airlines were caught up in a  massive IT outage  that also affected industries ranging from banks to media companies.

Several U.S. carriers, including American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines, issued ground stops for all their flights early on Friday due to communication problems, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

There were over 2,000 flights canceled and more than 5,300 delays as of 12 p.m. ET, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware . Most airlines were able to resume operations as the morning progressed, but many said they expected disruptions to continue throughout the day.

More on the outage: Global tech outage grounds flights, hits banks and media businesses

Megan Brown said Washington Dulles Airport was surprisingly calm, even as the airline industry was in turmoil. She said the airport was less crowded than usual, making for a quicker-than-expected security screening, and passengers seemed understanding about the disruptions.

"We just took the gamble and came here, and hopefully we’ll leave today,” Brown told USA TODAY by phone from Dulles. “There’s nothing you can do.”

Her family's 8:25 a.m. ET flight to San Francisco was delayed, but they were able to take off within a couple of hours. "A cheer just erupted as the gate agent said we are going to start boarding," she said.

Around the world, airports and airlines advised customers to arrive earlier than normal for flights.

Around 9 a.m. Sikora posted another video showing fellow travelers sitting on the floor and standing in the middle of a crowded Philadelphia International Airport terminal.

“Everyone is in the same boat. Just wandering and sitting,” he told USA TODAY, hoping his flight, originally scheduled for 6 a.m., would now take off at 12:20 p.m.

Issues online: Instagram may be the best social app to get your flight issues fixed. Here's why.

The cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike blamed the global tech outage on a defect in an update for Microsoft Windows hosts.

The aviation sector is hit particularly hard due to its sensitivity to timings. Airlines rely on a closely coordinated schedule often run by air traffic control. Just one delay of a few minutes can throw off a flight schedule for take-offs and landings for an airport and airline for the rest of the day.

"This is not a security incident or cyberattack," Crowdstrike CEO George Kurtz posted on X . "The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed."

Airline waivers and DOT requirements

The Department of Transportation confirmed that it considers the delays and cancellations caused by Friday's IT outage to be "controllable" by the airlines. While airlines may say they didn't cause the computer error, it means that the DOT will hold them responsible for upholding the commitments they've made to customers when it comes to policies like rebooking or hotel and meal vouchers as the mess gets sorted out. Every airline's policy is outlined on the DOT customer service dashboard.

Travelers are in for a rough day, but airlines are doing what they can to provide extra flexibility to those affected by the outage.

  • American issued a waiver for affected travelers covering all of its U.S. hubs.
  • Delta : Delta resumed operations just before 8 a.m. ET, but said it expects disruptions to continue throughout the day. The airline issued a waiver allowing all passengers traveling Friday to rebook their flights.
  • United : In a statement, United said it was resuming flight operations as of 6:20 a.m. ET, but expects delays and cancellations throughout the day. The airline issued a travel waiver for select airports so passengers can make changes if their flights are affected, though a United spokesperson told USA TODAY that nearly all of the airline's flights depart or arrive in one of the airports covered by the waiver.
  • Spirit : The airline issued a waiver allowing customers who are booked to fly Friday or Saturday through any airport in its network to change their flights at no additional charge.

What happens if my flight is canceled?

Department of Transportation rules  require all airlines to offer customers a refund if their flights are canceled for any reason, but customers may be entitled to additional compensation if a cancellation is within the airline's control.

It is unclear whether an IT outage affecting all airlines would qualify within their control.

What should I do if my flight is delayed?

If your flight is experiencing a long delay, the Transportation Department suggests asking airline staff if they will pay for meals or a hotel room.

The DOT dashboard reflects airlines' official policies, but many carriers handle compensation for delays on a case-by-case basis and may provide vouchers or other benefits in some situations that are not formally covered.
