Paddlewheeler to visit: american heritage coming to marietta.

american cruise lines entertainment jobs

Marietta will be visited by a paddlewheeler next week.

American Cruise Lines’ paddlewheeler, American Heritage, will arrive in Marietta on July 24 and its passengers will disembark at 8 a.m., according to American Cruise Lines’ Public Relations Manager Alexa Paolella.

She said the American Heritage is currently on a Grand Ohio River Cruise traveling from St. Louis to Pittsburgh that started July 13 and will end in Pittsburgh on July 26.

According to Paolella the Grand Ohio River Cruise is a 16-day cruise and it can sail in either direction between Pittsburgh and St. Louis.

According to American Cruise Line’s website, once the passengers arrive in Marietta they will have their choice of complimentary tours, a trip to the Castle Historic House Museum; a Marietta Local Loop Excursion which involves a visit to the Campus Martius Museum and the Children’s Toy and Doll Museum; a guided walking tour of Marietta’s Earthworks; a Harmar Heritage walk that shows off Fort Harmar and the Henry Fearing House; and a guided exploration of Mound Cemetery.

Paolella said the tours are offered continuously throughout the day so passengers can usually go on more than one.

She said the boat will leave Marietta at 11 p.m. Wednesday and its next stop will be Moundsville, W.Va.

According to Paolella, the boat can hold up to 150 people and the number of passengers on the boat right now is slightly less than that. She said the American Heritage offers almost every passenger a private balcony and for the rooms that don’t have one they have picture windows that open.

The website said the American Heritage first set sail in 2015, and according to Paolella all of the paddlewheelers had some renovations in the last couple of years.

She said they “were all redone with interior design in 2022.”

According to Paollella, the number of American Cruise Lines’ stops in Marietta will increase next year. She said American Cruise Lines boats will stop in Marietta eight times this year and 14 times in 2025.

She said this is due to the company switching Marietta from a half-day stop in 2023 to a full-day stop in 2024 and because they will be offering more of their 9-day long Ohio River cruises, on which Marietta is a stop, in 2025.

Family speaks out after getting stranded in Alaska mid-cruise

A cruise vacation through Alaska turned into a travel nightmare for one Oklahoma family who got stranded without their belongings after a mishap with a local excursion caused them to miss their ship's boarding window.

The Gault family, including six young kids and a 78-year-old grandmother, are now safely back home from Ketchikan. They had disembarked from the Norwegian Encore on Friday, July 12 to see a lumberjack show that they booked through the cruise line.

"When you talk about cruise nightmares this is the definition of it," Joshua Gault told "Good Morning America" of the incident.

He said when they tried to get back to the ship, the local tour operator had told them to wait for the next bus. But that bus never arrived. The family said they called the local port agent who rushed them to the ship, only to see it already pulling away from the dock with their belongings, including some of their passports.

"I was in shock, like utterly shocked," he said, recalling thinking at the time, "Are they really doing this right now?"

The Gaults said they quickly reached out to Norwegian. His wife, Cailyn Gault, told "GMA" that "the people that I was speaking with were so empathetic, they were apologetic — they're like, what do you need?"

The family said they had to cover the cost of their own food and hotel and find their own way back to Oklahoma — a journey that included sleeping on airport floors.

"It was completely overwhelming," Cailyn Gault said.

The family said they estimate the unplanned change cost them more than $21,000 just to get home, which included nearly $9,000 in customs fees for missing a stop in Canada. They said Norwegian is working with them to make it right.

"I think we are on a right path as far as both agreeing that something bad really happened here," Joshua Gault said.

A spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line told ABC News in an emailed statement that the company "will be reimbursing the family for all of the out-of-pocket expenses they incurred over these two days, as a result of missing the ship in Ketchikan, including meals, accommodations, etc. Reimbursements will be processed once receipts for these expenses are provided to us."

NCL said it has "initiated the process to refund the family for the fee imposed by the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, as a result of the guests not visiting a foreign port prior to returning to the U.S., as required when an itinerary originates from the U.S. in accordance with the Passenger Vessel Services Act."

Additionally, the cruise line representative told ABC News that "these guests will be receiving a pro-rated refund for the two cruise days they missed."

"As a gesture of goodwill, the company will also be providing each of the nine guests with a Future Cruse Credit in the form of a 20% discount of their cruise fare that can be used towards their next voyage," the spokesperson said.

Experts say if you leave your cruise ship for an excursion, always bring a government-issued photo ID and the name and number of the port agent, who is the best person to help travelers who may run into trouble.

"The port agent is the cruise line's representative in that port," Stewart Chiron, founder of The Cruise Guy, said. "In this case, contacting the port agent was the best move because they would be able to contact the ship."

US cyber agency CISA says malicious hackers are 'taking advantage' of CrowdStrike outage

As much of the world slowly gets back online after an outage caused by cybersecurity giant CrowdStrike led to global travel and business gridlock, malicious actors are also trying to exploit the situation for their own gain. U.S. cybersecurity agency CISA said in a statement Friday that though the CrowdStrike outage was not linked to a cyberattack or malicious activity, it has "observed threat actors taking advantage of this incident for phishing and other malicious activity."

Brian Kelley performs at RNC. What he sang and why Florida Georgia Line duo split

Country star brian kelley — formerly a member of florida georgia line with tyler hubbard — made an appearance at 2024's republican national convention..

Portrait of Marcus K. Dowling

Florida native and country singer-songwriter Brian Kelley's appearance at 2024's Republican National Convention occurs during the release cycle of "Tennessee Truth," his debut album, released on May 9.

Kelley is known as one half of the chart-topping country duo Florida Georgia Line, alongside Georgia native Tyler Hubbard.

The Volusia County native is set to perform "American Spirit" during a primetime spot on the convention stage at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wis. during Day 3 of the RNC, his father Ed Kelley told the Daytona Beach News-Journal .

The song was released as a single over the 4th of July weekend in 2022 as a tribute to those who've lost their lives in the armed forces. It was inspired by Kelley's grandfather, John Edward Kelley, who served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was also a prisoner of war and a recipient of two purple hearts.

Here's what to know about Kelley and what happened to Florida Georgia Line.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

'Cruise' and 'Meant To Be': Florida Georgia Line's chart-toppers

Florida Georgia Line spent the 2010s achieving country superstardom, selling over 50 million singles alone via hits like their 2012 Nelly collaboration "Cruise" and 2017's Bebe Rexha pairing "Meant to Be."

Over 12 years in Music City, the duo's blend of country, hip-hop, and rock elements achieved unprecedented commercial popularity. "Cruise" became the first country song ever to receive the Diamond (10 million sales) certification, spending 24 weeks at number one on Billboard's Country Sales chart.

Five years later, "Meant To Be" — their duet with pop vocalist Bebe Rexha — was a Billboard country sales charts leader for roughly three-quarters of 2018. Impressively, the song spent its entire run at No. 1. Also, in that chart's history, Hubbard and Kelley occupy the first, third, and fifth longest-charting singles: debut hit "Cruise" is at No. 3 with a 24-week chart-topping run in 2012-13 and "H.O.L.Y." achieved similar acclaim in 2016 for 18 weeks.

Big Machine Label Group executive vice president Jimmy Harnen stated regarding the success, "For Florida Georgia Line to have three in the top five is absolutely nuclear."

FGL House legacy: Florida Georgia Line among first country acts to open a Nashville bar; FGL House closing recalls how we got here

Florida Georgia Line's split — and its causes

The duo performed together for the last time  in September 2022  at the Minnesota State Fair. However, breakup rumors had been swirling long before then. In February 2022, Hubbard told People Magazine that the pair were "taking a break" instead of breaking up. A few months later, Hubbard confirmed that the pair had broken up due to Kelley wanting to go solo and said there was "no bad blood between the two of them."

Eighteen months following their split, Hubbard appeared on the "Bussin' With the Boys" podcast to confirm that a split he deemed "unexpected" was initiated by Kelley.

"BK came to me and said, 'Man I'm really feeling like I want to do the solo thing,' and I'm like really?" said Hubbard. "We were just getting out of our first deal, we were kind of in a sweet spot that we had worked for 10 years to get to."

Hubbard wanted to continue for a decade longer and supported him despite being caught off guard by his bandmate's decision.

"We've had an incredible ride; this is where it's going to go," said Hubbard. "Let's do it and crush it and you never know, maybe it'll bring us back together and we can have a reunion tour or whatever."

Kelley, who appeared on "Bussin' With the Boys" 48 hours after Hubbard, noted that he originally wanted to keep Florida Georgia Line going and be soloists under the same umbrella.

"I wanted to do it all, I didn't think that was out of bounds," he added.

"We had magic, amazing fans, we went on a hell of a ride. I'm forever grateful for that and just what a time."

Brian Kelley's solo career

Kelley's solo leanings began before Florida Georgia Line's official split with the release of his 2021 E.P. "Sunshine State of Mind" and 2022 stage musical "May We All," inspired by the Florida Georgia Line song of the same name.

After the split, he reached the "apples versus oranges" moment of his career when everything — from his appearance and style of dress to the types of songs he was interested in making — evolved.

"Brian Kelley doesn't have 19 No. 1 hits at country radio, and I've found the good in that. Allowing people to discover the truth of who I am is a critical moment to embrace pride in the freedom of the steps I've taken."

Moving on: Brian Kelley leaves Florida Georgia Line behind, finds 'Tennessee Truth' with new album

His latest album is comprised of songs more closely tied to how he's redoubled his efforts to be a crooner of rural anthems more linked to Alan Jackson and as well the influence of his father, Ed, renowned for serving on Ormond Beach, Florida's City Commission and being the Volusia County, Florida chairman  for two decades .

"I had to re-learn how to show up and patiently wait for my realness to emerge from the lyrics and the melodies perfectly. Once that happened, the same kid whose father is from the Nashville area and who once came to Opryland with his family and sang '"'Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident)' blended with me rediscovering the person who is no different from anyone who listens to this record."

Breaking news, manny jacinto reacts to ‘top gun: maverick’ for cutting his lines: ‘tom cruise is writing stories for tom cruise’.

He feels the need for speed.

Manny Jacinto , 36, is speaking out about “Top Gun: Maverick” cutting down his part.

“It’s flattering that there was a little bit of an outcry, but it wasn’t shocking to me,” Jacinto told GQ in an interview published Wednesday.

Jacinto, who is Filipino-Canadian and is married to “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” actress Dianne Doan, 33, added, “It kind of fuels you, because at the end of the day, Tom Cruise is writing stories for Tom Cruise.”

Tom Cruise.

He continued, “It’s up to us — Asian Americans, people of color — to be that [for ourselves]. We can’t wait for somebody else to do it. If we want bigger stories out there, we have to make them for ourselves.”

In the $1.5 billion box office hit, “Top Gun: Maverick,” which has been credited with saving the box office after the dismal pandemic year of 2020, Jacinto played LT Billy “Fritz” Avalone.

But, he said, after months of training and gym sessions, all his lines were cut, and his character had hardly any screen time in the finished product.

“There was this sense of where the film was going [on set], like I can see them focusing the camera more on these [other] guys and not taking so much time on our scenes,” said Jacinto.

The movie catapulted Glen Powell and Miles Teller to higher levels of fame.

But it hardly boosted Jacinto’s spotlight.

Manny Jacinto doing push ups.

Jacinto, who was also in “Nine Perfect Strangers” with Nicole Kidman, is best known for playing Jason, the goofy amateur DJ in “The Good Place” alongside Kristen Bell and Jameela Jamil. When fans come up to him and say Jason’s signature catchphrase, “Bortles!” it “puts a smile on my face,” he told The Post in 2021.

He also recently co-starred in the “Star Wars” series “The Acolyte” on Disney+.

“Fortunately, it still was a great experience — you get to see this huge machine at work, see how Tom Cruise works, and you get to be a small part of this huge franchise,” Jacinto told GQ about “Top Gun: Maverick.”

Manny Jacinto smiling.

He said that he learned from that experience of getting mostly cut from the film.

“Maybe it’s my lack of faith in this industry, but the people of color who find success, I feel like they still have to work at it and continue to fight for roles. The people I look up to—if you look at Steven Yeun, or Kumail Nanjiani, or even Donald Glover—they all had to, in some shape or form, create [projects for themselves] in order to continue to have a platform,” Jacinto went on.

He added, “Or even look at Dev Patel! He’s a huge star, but he had to make ‘Monkey Man’ himself [to get an action role like that], and that was even shelved at one point. That’s crazy to me. So that’s why I have this caution toward whether or not the industry will move things forward for my career. If anything, it fuels me to try and create things on my own terms and hopefully lead projects that way.”

In January, it was reported that a third “Top Gun” movie was in the works with Cruise, Powell and Teller attached.

What We Know About the Global Microsoft Outage

Airlines to banks to retailers were affected in many countries. Businesses are struggling to recover.

By Eshe Nelson and Danielle Kaye

Eshe Nelson reported from London and Danielle Kaye from New York.

Across the world, critical businesses and services including airlines, hospitals, train networks and TV stations, were disrupted on Friday by a global tech outage affecting Microsoft users.

In many countries, flights were grounded, workers could not get access to their systems and, in some cases, customers could not make card payments in stores. While some of the problems were resolved within hours, many businesses, websites and airlines continued to struggle to recover.

What happened?

A series of outages rippled across the globe as information displays, login systems and broadcasting networks went dark.

The problem affecting the majority of services was caused by a flawed update by CrowdStrike , an American cybersecurity firm, whose systems are intended to protect users from hackers. Microsoft said on Friday that it was aware of an issue affecting machines running “CrowdStrike Falcon.”

But Microsoft had also said there was an earlier outage affecting U.S. users of Azure, its cloud service system. Some users may have been affected by both. Even as CrowdStrike sent out a fix, some systems were still affected by midday in the United States as businesses needed to make manual updates to their systems to resolve the issue.

George Kurtz, the president and chief executive of CrowdStrike, said on Friday morning that it could take some time for some systems to recover.

How a Software Update Crashed Computers Around the World

Here’s a visual explanation for how a faulty software update crippled machines.

What was affected?

It is more apt to ask what was not affected. Everything from airlines to banks to health care systems in many countries was hit.

In Australia, passengers were stuck in long lines at Sydney airport as information screens went blank, and programming was disrupted at the national broadcaster. Airports in Britain, Germany and Taiwan had long delays at check-ins and flights were delayed or canceled. At an airport in South Korea, handwritten boarding passes were being slowly handed out.

Flights continued to be disrupted at some U.S. airports into the morning because of the cascading effect of flight delays and cancellations. The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that ground stops and delays would be “intermittent” at some airports as airlines grapple with residual technology issues.

The outage affected emergency 911 lines in multiple states, the U.S. Emergency Alert System said on social media — but most if not all of the emergency system problems appeared to be resolving themselves by midmorning.

A few hospitals in Germany said they would cancel elective procedures; and in Britain, some doctors in the National Health Service were unable to gain access to systems. Kaiser Permanente, a medical system that provides care to 12.6 million members in the United States, said all of its hospitals’ systems were affected, and it activated backup systems to keep caring for patients.

At some banks, including JPMorgan Chase, there were delays in processing trades because bankers could not log into their work systems. TD Bank, the 10th largest in the United States, said customers complained that they could not access their online accounts.

But the problems were not uniform. London’s Heathrow Airport said that its flights were still operating. The London Stock Exchange said that it could not publish news updates but the exchange, where trades take place, was working as normal. The auction system at the Norwegian central bank was briefly interrupted, but other major central banks, the European Central Bank and Bank of England, said there was no effect on their systems.

In some cases, issues were resolved relatively quickly. In Ukraine, Sense Bank and the mobile operator Vodafone reported brief problems with their services. At Dubai International Airport, two airlines switched to alternative systems, allowing operations to resume.

Major grocery chains in the United States appeared largely unaffected, with most stores operating as usual. But the world’s biggest logistics companies, including United Parcel Service and FedEx, did report disruptions, causing delivery delays in some regions. A spokesman for UPS said the company’s computer systems in the United States and Europe were affected.

Who’s to blame?

Mr. Kurtz said CrowdStrike took responsibility for the software bug, sent in a system update, that caused the outage. He said in a post on X that Mac and Linux users were not affected.

The incident was not a cyberattack, Mr. Kurtz said, adding that customers remain “fully protected.” But Mr. Kurtz warned on NBC’s “Today” show that the fix could take some time to put in place.

“We understand the gravity of the situation and are deeply sorry for the inconvenience and disruption,” Mr. Kurtz said. Microsoft offered suggestions to users to help resolve the issue, including restoring backup systems.

While CrowdStrike is at fault for the software bug, J.J. Guy, chief executive of cybersecurity company Sevco, said poor resiliency of Microsoft’s operating system is to blame for extent of the damage.

“Bugs happen all the time and are unavoidable, the result of business complexity and technology,” Mr. Guy said. “But this became a catastrophic incident because of the remediation procedures. The resiliency of the operating system was not sufficient to mitigate the risk of that.”

Microsoft did not immediately respond to requests for comment on its operating system. The company’s chief executive, Satya Nadella, said in a post on X that Microsoft is working with CrowdStrike to offer customers technical guidance and bring systems back online.
