The official Tour Championship trophy: The story behind ‘Calamity Jane’

In addition to the traditional tour championship trophy awarded to the winner, the victor also gets a replica putter as a prize..

Paul Reidy

Bobby Jones’ Calamity Jane is one of the most famous golf clubs of all time . The Augusta native Jones used the Calamity Jane putter to help him win 13 major championships , including the Grand Slam in 1930. During the course of his career, Jones used two versions of the Condi rose model.

The original version of the club was actually made for William Winton, a golf club dealer from West London, but made its way to the U.S. via Jim Maiden, a Scotsman who emigrated to the country and eventually became head golf professional at Nassau Country Club on Long Island.

It was Maiden who game the Calamity Jane name for the putter after learning about American sharp shooter Martha “Calamity Jane” Canary, who was a notorious character during the mid to late 1800s .

Maiden kept the putter in his possession for years until the 1920 U.S. Amateu r when he offered Jones the chance to try it out following a defeat to Francis Ouimet. As the story goes, Jones buried no less than eight consecutive putts with Calamity Jones and left the course with the putter in his possession.

Jones would go on to win his first three major championships with the original Calamity Jane before clubmaker J. Victor East noticed the club had become defective . The emery cloth caddies used in the 1920s to buff the head had put a twist in the sweet spot, wearing out the face of Jones’ putter.

East would go onto make further versions of the Calamity Jane putter with Jones going on to win a further ten majors with the original clubs now housed in a trophy case at Augusta National Golf Club, while Calamity Jane II can be found at the USGA’s museum in Far Hills, New Jersey.

Putter prize

As of 2017, it was decided that as well as the traditional winner’s trophy, the champion at the East Lake course in Atlanta, Georgia would also be given a replica silver Calamity Jane putter as a tribute to local legend Jones.

Viktor Hovland wins Tour Championship and takes FedEx Cup title

Viktor Hovland, of Norway, celebrates winning the Tour Championship.

 • Copy Link URL Copied!

Viktor Hovland played the best golf of his life in the final two weeks of the PGA Tour season, and it paid off Sunday with the biggest trophy of his career — a FedEx Cup title along with the $18 million bonus.

Staked to a six-shot lead, Hovland didn’t flinch under a relentless challenge from Xander Schauffele . The 25-year-old Norwegian stayed on the attack and closed with a seven-under 63 for a five-shot victory in the Tour Championship at East Lake.

Hovland capped off his best season with three victories. Even more staggering is that he played his final tournaments — the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields and the Tour Championship — in 36-under par.

Schauffele made him work for that $18 million and got to within three shots with seven holes to play. Hovland ended the suspense with a 25-foot par putt on the 14th hole, and he put Schauffele away with a 10-foot birdie putt on the 16th.

Schauffele and Hovland put on a superb show. Playing in the last group, on a day that was delayed nearly two hours by thunderstorms, they had the best scores of the day.

Hovland was the No. 2 seed going into the Tour Championship, meaning he started at eight-under par. Hovland posted a 19-under 261 — the same score as Schauffele, who started the tournament at three-under par.

Schauffele did everything he could. He was six shots behind when he left East Lake on Saturday evening, knowing that his only hope was to put as much pressure on Hovland as he could over the front nine.

Schauffele shot 30. Hovland nearly matched him birdie for birdie, posting a 31 that included a key 15-foot par save on No. 2 after the two-hour delay from thunderstorms that slightly softened the East Lake turf.

Schauffele, for all his California chill, was simply relentless. He holed an 18-foot birdie putt on the par-three 11th hole and followed with a 12-foot birdie on the 12th, cutting the lead to three shots with seven holes to play.

It felt like the margin was even smaller considering how well Schauffele was playing, and Hovland having missed three birdie chances from 10 feet or closer.

The putt that mattered came at the 14th, the toughest hole at East Lake. Hovland came up short of the green, about 100 feet from the flag, and his pitch was weak and stopped just inside 25 feet from the hole.

He poured it in the heart and pumped his fist stronger than he had all day. The clincher was another pure short iron, this one to 10 feet on the 16th for birdie. At that point, the engraver went to work on the silver FedEx Cup trophy.

El Segundo, Calif.'s Louis Lappe, right center, celebrates with manager Danny Bole.

Louis Lappe’s walk-off home run lifts El Segundo to Little League World Series title

Louis Lappe hit a walk-off home run in the sixth inning to power El Segundo to a 6-5 win over Curaçao in the Little League World Series championship game.

Now it’s a matter of how his peers judge his season. The PGA Tour player of the year was thought to be a two-man race between Masters champion Jon Rahm and his four wins and Scottie Scheffler with The Players Championship among his two wins and the No. 1 ranking from his remarkable consistency.

Hovland ended the season with wins at the Memorial and two FedEx Cup playoff events, including the one that mattered.

U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark won the B-Flight, closing with a 65 to finish third, 11 shots behind. That was worth a $5 million bonus. Rory McIlroy had a 65 to finish fourth and collect $4 million, while Patrick Cantlay (66) was alone in fifth to earn $3 million.

The next time Hovland and Schauffele meet is for no prize money at all — the Ryder Cup in Rome in a month’s time.

A Triple-Bogey Start Vanquished, Rory McIlroy Captures the FedEx Cup

McIlroy edged out Scottie Scheffler, who had held the lead in Atlanta for almost the entire Tour Championship. Sungjae Im and Scheffler finished tied for second, a stroke behind.

tour championship trophy

By Alan Blinder

ATLANTA — On Thursday, his scorecard a shambles after only two holes at the Tour Championship, Rory McIlroy did not find himself thinking about golf’s comeback magicians or his fellow major champions.

Instead, he considered the example of a 20-year-old player, Joohyung Kim, also known as Tom Kim, who won the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C., this month.

“He started with a quad and ended up going on to win the golf tournament,” McIlroy, who had opened his Tour Championship with a triple-bogey and a bogey, said then. “It is possible.”

So McIlroy proved it himself. Three days after he produced an instant debacle at East Lake Golf Club and six weeks after he faltered at the British Open , McIlroy orchestrated the largest final-round comeback in the history of the Tour Championship and defeated Scottie Scheffler by a stroke on Sunday. Although McIlroy’s win did not end his eight-year drought in major tournaments, he earned $18 million, claimed his third FedEx Cup, a record, and allowed the PGA Tour to close a turbulent season by crowning a beloved stalwart as its champion.

“I just felt so close all year,” McIlroy said after his victory in Atlanta, where Scheffler started with the tournament lead Thursday and held it until Sunday evening. “I had a couple wins, but I was just waiting for something. Maybe this was it. I got a little lucky with Scottie not playing his best golf today, and I took advantage of that with my good play.”

But, McIlroy added, “I went up against the best player in the world today and I took him down, and that’s got to mean something.”

Even though McIlroy trailed Scheffler by six strokes at the beginning of the fourth round, the final two holes of his third round — played on Sunday morning because of Saturday’s weather in Atlanta — suggested he was in fighting form: He birdied both.

McIlroy started the final round with a bogey, but he made birdie on No. 3 to bring his score even. Starting with the fifth hole, he stitched together three consecutive birdies that would undergird a 32 on the front nine. Scheffler, McIlroy’s partner in the final pairing, had three bogeys in the first half of the fourth round, which he finished with a three-over-par 73.

For as sure-footed as McIlroy so often seemed Sunday, and for as wobbly as Scheffler sometimes was, McIlroy did not assume sole command of the leaderboard until the final putts at No. 16.

He might as well have on No. 15, though.

Thirty-one feet from the pin, McIlroy tapped the ball and then stood like a statue, his putter barely aloft as the ball broke to the left. Then it swung toward the hole, McIlroy stepping back — and willing, praying, something — a few steps before it rolled into the cup. McIlroy raised his right fist in jubilation as the crowd thundered its approval.

Scheffler made a bogey on the next hole and, at last, surrendered the solo lead.

“I really fought hard today; Rory just played a really good round of golf,” Scheffler said. “He made some key putts there at the end, and he definitely deserved to win.”

Scheffler finished in a tie for second with Sungjae Im. Xander Schauffele was two strokes behind them, and Max Homa and Justin Thomas finished tied for fifth, trailing McIlroy by four strokes.

In McIlroy, 33, the PGA Tour got a FedEx Cup winner who has been one of its fiercest loyalists during the year’s upheaval over LIV Golf, the new series that has lured top players with hundreds of millions of dollars from Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund.

The dramatics over LIV were hardly absent from Atlanta — McIlroy was paired Thursday and Friday with Cameron Smith, the British Open winner who has not publicly denied a British news media report that he intends to defect as soon as this week. But McIlroy’s win was a boon for an entrenched order that has lately been besieged.

“Everyone on tour has had to deal with a lot; even the guys that have went to LIV have had to deal with a lot,” McIlroy said before adding, a few moments later: “This is the best place in the world to play golf. It’s the most competitive. It’s got the best players. It’s got the deepest fields. I don’t know why you’d want to play anywhere else.”

He could have been forgiven, of course, for thinking otherwise Thursday in the rain in Atlanta. But Sunday, he said his mind had “automatically” wandered to Kim’s resurrection in Greensboro.

“I could have easily thought the other way and thought: ‘I’ve got no chance now. What am I doing here?’” McIlroy said Sunday, when he shot a 66. “But I just sort of, I guess, proved that I was in a really good mind-set for the week, and I didn’t let it get to me too much and just stuck my head down and got to work.”

By a lone stroke, it was enough.

Rory McIlroy rallies to win Tour Championship, third FedEx Cup title

 • ESPN News Services

ATLANTA -- This year it became easy to overlook Rory McIlroy 's four majors, 30 wins on four continents and two years at No. 1 in the world. He has been viewed mostly as the strongest voice and staunchest defender of the PGA Tour in its battle against Saudi-funded LIV Golf.

So perhaps it was only fitting that a most tumultuous year for the PGA Tour culminated Sunday with McIlroy holding its biggest prize.

He had the final say with his clubs.

Six shots behind before the Tour Championship started, 10 shots back after two holes, McIlroy rallied from a six-shot deficit in the final round against the No. 1 player in the world and closed with a 4-under 66 to become the first three-time winner of the FedEx Cup.

"It's been a tumultuous time for the world of men's professional golf in particular,'' he said. "I've been in the thick of things. I guess every chance I get, I'm trying to defend what I feel is the best place to play elite professional golf in the world.

"It's in some ways fitting that I was able to get this done today to sort of round off a year that has been very, very challenging and different.''

It came at the expense of Masters champion Scottie Scheffler , the No. 1 player in the world who birdied four of six holes Sunday morning to finish the storm-delayed third round at 66 and build a six-shot lead. Not even McIlroy, who birdied the last two holes in the morning to get into the final group, thought he had a great chance.

But then Scheffler never regained his groove, missing fairways and greens and par putts. He made only one birdie in a closing round of 73 and tied the PGA Tour record for losing a six-shot lead in the final round.

"I just didn't get off to a good start early, but after that I grinded as hard as I could,'' Scheffler said. "For whatever reason my swing wasn't where it had been the first few days this week.''

McIlroy had a 17-under 263 for his raw score, the best of the week. He started at 4 under as the No. 7 seed and finished at 21 under to capture the $18 million bonus.

Sungjae Im fell back with a double bogey on the 14th hole and still managed a 66 to tie for second with Scheffler.

McIlroy referred to the final round as a "spectacle," and not just because of the pro-McIlroy crowd that chanted his name along the closing holes.

"Two of the best players in the world going head-to-head on the best tour," he said.

McIlroy needed plenty of help from Scheffler, who never trailed until the 70th hole. Scheffler looked out of sorts early, and McIlroy capitalized. With three straight birdies, he tied Scheffler on the seventh hole. And then it was a nail-biter to the end.

It was a stunning display at East Lake that turned on two shots.

McIlroy holed a 30-foot birdie putt on the par-3 15th hole to tie for the lead.

After he flew the green by some 20 yards, his pitch was running fast and headed off the front of the green when it hit the pin and settled 7 feet away. He saved par. Scheffler blasted out of a bunker to just inside 10 feet and missed, making bogey that put him behind for the first time all week.

Scheffler badly misread a 10-foot birdie chance on the 17th to tie, sending the Tour Championship to the final hole with $18 million on the line.

Scheffler's 4-iron on the par-5 18th sailed short and right into a bunker, and he blasted out over the green. McIlroy went left against the grandstand, took relief and got onto the green for an easy par.

"I wanted to win the season-long title,'' Scheffler said. "I've had a really great year and I wanted to finish it off with a win here, and unfortunately I wasn't able to do that.''

McIlroy won the FedEx Cup in 2016 in a playoff. He won the FedEx Cup again in 2019, the first year of a staggered start. This might have been the sweetest of all, coming off a year in which the PGA Tour has been in a nasty battle with LIV Golf, which already has attracted some two dozen players and now is part of an antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour.

It was McIlroy who has declared fierce loyalty to the PGA Tour over the past few years when rival leagues were coming into view. And it was McIlroy who joined Tiger Woods in leading a momentous player-only meeting last week that led to significant changes ahead for the tour.

So, yes, this had an extra level of satisfaction. And no, he didn't mind the burden he carried as the de facto voice of the tour.

"If you believe in something I think you have to speak up, and I believe very strongly about this. I really do,'' McIlroy said. "I hate what it's doing to the game of golf. I hate it.

"I think when you believe that what you're saying is the right things, you're happy to stick your neck out on the line.''

Even at the Tour Championship, typically a celebration of the end of the year, there was talk all weekend of more defections coming in the next few days. The Daily Telegraph reported three weeks ago that British Open champion Cameron Smith was leaving for LIV Golf, and sources confirmed his expected move to ESPN .

Harold Varner III , Marc Leishman and Anirban Lahiri also are expected to leave, sources told ESPN. Cameron Tringale announced his decision on Twitter.

Still to be determined is Joaquin Niemann , whose manager said the Chilean golfer would discuss the options with his father later Sunday.

"Everyone on tour has had to deal with a lot," McIlroy said. "Even the guys that have went to LIV have had to deal with a lot. It's just been a very tumultuous sort of era in our game. This is the best place in the world to play golf. It's the most competitive. It's got the best players. It's got the deepest fields. I don't know why you'd want to play anywhere else.''

With all that speculation, the Tour Championship that looked to be a runaway turned into a dynamic show. And in the end, the tour's biggest voice had its biggest trophy.

Viktor Hovland knew he was playing the best golf of his life. Staked to a six-shot lead Sunday in the Tour Championship, he figured a steady diet of fairways and greens and plenty of pars would be the safest route to winning the FedEx Cup.

Xander Schauffele made him change his plans.

And then the 25-year-old Norwegian star performed even better.

Hovland didn't flinch under a relentless challenge from Schauffele, matching birdies at East Lake in Atlanta from start to finish until he capped off the best two weeks of his career with his biggest trophy — a FedEx Cup title and the $18 million US bonus.

He closed with a 7-under 63, the lowest score by the winner in Tour Championship history, and won the Tour Championship by five shots over Schauffele.

"The game plan was to try to play as boring as possible — play it like Tiger back in the day when he would post a 69 or 70 in a major championship and walk away with the victory," Hovland said.

Norway's Viktor Hovland claims FedEx Cup title with 5-shot victory

This was anything but boring golf — Hovland with a 63, Schauffele with a 62. A six-shot lead was cut to three shots on the back nine until Hovland poured in a 25-foot par putt on the 14th hole that made an already steep hill all but impossible for Schauffele to scale.

"What he was doing today was very special," Hovland said. "It made this day more stressful than it should have been."

So ended a season when Hovland won for the first time in the United States at the Memorial, had a multiple-win season, and then capped it off with two weeks of such sublime golf that he won the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields and the Tour Championship at 36-under par.

 • Viktor Hovland holds 6-shot lead entering final round of Tour Championship
 • Morikawa breaks Tiger's 36-hole mark at East Lake, shares Tour Championship lead with Hovland

Schauffele made him work for that $18 million, firing at flags from the opening hole. He got to within three shots with seven holes to play and had momentum on his side. And then Hovland ended the suspense with that 25-foot par putt on the 14th hole, and he put Schauffele away with a 10-foot birdie putt on the 16th.

Schauffele and Hovland put on a superb show. Playing in the final group, on a day that was delayed nearly two hours by thunderstorms, they had the best scores of the day. The next best score was a 65 from players who never had a chance at winning.

"I thought 62 would have let me get close to him," Schauffele said. "He played unbelievably well. He made important putts and he's just played like a champ."

Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C., finished 25th at 2 under, while Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont., was 26th at 1 under.

“It’s pretty surreal to be standing here right now.”

Viktor Hovland reflects on his incredible run and #FedExCup victory. pic.twitter.com/4RJsKgK0qo — @PGATOUR

Hovland was the No. 2 seed going into the Tour Championship, meaning he started the tournament at 8-under par. Hovland posted a 19-under 261 — the same score as Schauffele, who started the tournament at 3 under as the No. 15 seed.

It was the second time in four years that no one scored better than Schauffele, and he left Atlanta without a trophy to show for it. Such is the nature of the FedEx Cup finale, and the importance of a strong season and a big performance in the two post-season events leading up to the Tour Championship.

"I'll hold my head up high," Schauffele said. "It was the most fun I had losing in quite some time. It's such a weird feeling. I shot 62. I lost by five. Just kudos to Hovi. He played unbelievably well the last few weeks to get himself into this position and to really just put a cherry on top for himself and his team."

Schauffele did everything he could. He was six shots behind when he left East Lake on Saturday evening, knowing that his only hope was to put as much pressure on Hovland as he could over the front nine.

 • Morikawa shoots 61 to go from 9 strokes behind to 3-way tie for lead at Tour Championship
 • Lucas Glover wins FedEx Cup opener in playoff over Patrick Cantlay

Schauffele, for all his California chill, was up for the fight no matter the odds.

He made an 18-foot birdie putt on the par-3 11th hole and followed with a 12-foot birdie on the 12th, cutting the lead to three shots with seven holes to play. It felt like the margin was even smaller considering how well Schauffele was playing, and Hovland having missed three birdie chances from 10 feet or closer early on the back nine.

 • More golf coverage

He closed with three straight birdies that only mattered for the margin of victory.

Now it's a matter of how his peers judge his season.

The next time Hovland and Schauffele meet is for no prize money at all — the Ryder Cup in Rome in a month's time.

Davis Thompson makes it three in a row at John Deere Classic ‘Trophy House’

Georgia alum earns first pga tour title at tpc deere run.

Change Text Size

Make it 24 in ’24.

And three-for-three for "Trophy House".

In what started as a crowded final-round race for the John Deere Classic trophy, Davis Thompson quickly found himself running alone on Sunday.

He lapped the field with birdies on six of his first nine holes en route to a closing 7-under 64 at TPC Deere Run, a tournament record-setting total of 28-under 256, and a four-shot win over a trio of runners-up.

In his second year and 63rd start on the PGA TOUR, the 25-year-old blossoming star from Georgia became the 24th player to score his first PGA TOUR victory in the 53-year history of the Quad Cities event.

And, notably, he became the third straight winner out of an Airbnb rental house located just a few miles from TPC Deere Run, following 2022 winner J.T. Poston and last year’s winner Sepp Straka.

The newest Trophy House winner was the last man to book a room there this year when Straka opted for a hotel room with his wife and new baby, as Thompson found himself traveling solo while his wife, Holly Grace, served as a bridesmaid back home.

“It's kind of crazy,” Thompson said of the improbable streak of victories for visitors to the six-bedroom house just outside Colona, Illinois. “I stayed in Sepp's room. Me and him may be fighting for that room next year.”

Davis Thompson's news conference after winning John Deere Classic

Although Thompson’s talent had him trending toward victory, he said more than coincidence may be behind the success of Trophy House.

“Staying in a hotel room by myself, I probably would've let my mind wander a lot,” he said after taking a share of the lead into Sunday for just the second time on TOUR. “My mind did wander, but hanging out with those guys last night, doing laundry and watching sports kind of kept my mind off things.”

Said Poston, one of this year’s six housemates, “We have fun, play a lot of cards and once we get home it’s pretty relaxed. I think when you’re playing well, that’s nice to go back to that and not be thinking about your golf. Obviously, it’s working.”

So are a new set of Titleist irons that Thompson put in his bag and a new golf ball he put in play in April. He’s had six top-25 finishes since the change, including runner-up finishes at the Myrtle Beach Classic and last week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Now, he has a dominating victory over arguably the deepest field in Quad Cities history, and he has joined a stalwart group of recent first-time TPC Deere Run winners that includes major champions Jordan Spieth, Bryson DeChambeau and Brian Harman.

Davis Thompson's commanding lead secures win at John Deere

To hear fellow TOUR players who know the former University of Georgia All-American well, Thompson has the game to match that latter trio’s subsequent success.

“I have been telling him for a couple of years he’s capable of reaching the top of the game, being a consistent Ryder Cupper for America and probably getting into the top 10 of the world,” said fellow Georgia alum Brendon Todd. “He’s that good. There’s not a lot of difference between his game and where Scottie Scheffler was three years ago.

“I said last week he’d probably be the guy who’d keep the mojo going for that house.”

Two-time major winner Zach Johnson is a close friend of Thompson’s father, Todd, a former Georgia Bulldog golfer himself and tournament director of The RSM Classic. Johnson often plays alongside Davis Thompson back home on St. Simons Island, Georgia, with accomplished pros like Harman, Poston, Harris English, Patton Kizzire and Davis Love III, among others.

“We saw it coming about two, three months ago,” Johnson said. “He did some changes in his golf bag and it started to click. He's in that talent realm, and what we're seeing, if you know him, it’s not surprising.”

Thompson might be the last guy to say such things out loud. Quiet, sneaky funny, and mostly unemotional are words those close to him use to describe him.

His wife, who flew to the Quad Cities on Sunday, said Thompson showed more emotion when the final putt dropped on Sunday than he did on their wedding day, but having dated Thompson since high school, she well knows the heart of a lion he carries inside.

“He is literally a national treasure,” she said. “He’s a secret, but once you get to know him, he’s a whole different person.”

Davis Thompson's 44-footer for birdie is the Shot of the Day

Thompson conceded his expectations upon joining the TOUR were not inconsiderable.

“I mean, of course, like every young guy, my expectation was to win every week, and that's just not feasible,” he said.

Yet, rather than tempering expectations, he worked doubly hard to attain them.

“It just kind of takes me a while to get adjusted, and then once I get comfortable, I kind of get in a groove and start to play well,” he said. “I feel like the past couple months, I got more and more comfortable and was able to break through this week.”

More spoils may follow. Playing in Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups and ranking near the top of the game certainly are ambitions, but he knows those are rewards to be earned.

“Yeah, I mean, obviously those are the goals,” he said. “But now that I've got my first win, I feel like the work is only beginning. The goal is to play this game for 20-plus years and have a great career.

“Yeah, as far as goals, honestly, just not really thinking about that right now. Just hopefully trying to get some sleep on (the Deere) charter flight to the Genesis Scottish Open.”

That, and, perhaps, to sleep in Trophy House again next July.

New leadership group, Champions Trophy plans and more – Key takeaways from India’s squad for Sri Lanka tour

India will be led by two different captains for the T20I and ODI legs of the Sri Lanka tour, all set to commence on 27 July.

With Rohit Sharma having retired from the T20Is, Suryakumar Yadav will lead the side in the shortest format against Sri Lanka. Barring a few changes, the side bears a familiar look to the squad that featured in India’s successful ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign.

The ODI side sees a number of stalwarts including Rohit and Virat Kohli return to the setup. As India gear up for their first tour under new head coach Gautam Gambhir, let us look at the key developments in the squad.

Every Hardik Pandya boundary at T20WC 2024

Watch the dynamic all-rounder smash with the bat at the #T20WorldCup 2024.

Emphasis on all-rounders

India will travel with a strong all-rounder contingent, marked by the presence of Riyan Parag, Hardik Pandya (T20Is only), Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar and Axar Patel.

This could mark a shift in the makeup of the lineup, especially in ODIs, wherein the side can field a mix of batting and bowling all-rounders. Riyan Parag offers a spin-bowling resource in the top or middle order, a facet that India’s ODI setup has lacked for a number of years.

Axar Patel reflects after stunning POTM performance | IND v ENG | T20WC 24

After taking 3/23 (4) to put India in the driver's seat in their ICC Men's T20 World Cup semi-final against England, Axar Patel's performance is marked with the Player of the Match award.

What's next for Ravindra Jadeja in white-ball cricket?

Ravindra Jadeja, who also retired from T20I after the T20 World Cup win, was omitted from the ODI side. With India already carrying a number of all-round options, this might signal a move away from Jadeja in white-ball cricket.

Instead of the 35-year-old, India have gone with younger options in Washington Sundar and Axar Patel as the bowling all-rounders.

Sundar impressed during the recently concluded T20I series against Zimbabwe, winning the Player of the Series award, while Axar helped India win the key moments during the triumphant T20 World Cup campaign with his exceptional display in all three disciplines on the field.

Best of KL Rahul | CWC23

With three scores of over 50 and an average of 75, KL Rahul enjoyed a prosperous World Cup.

Core of CWC23 backed for CT25

Along with skipper Rohit and Kohli, ODI regulars who featured in the Cricket World Cup 2023 including KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Shubman Gill, Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj are a part of the side.

Experienced names like Rahul, Gill (who was a reserve) and Iyer had missed out on the final squad for the T20 World Cup, but have the new management’s backing for the 50-over game. Rahul and Iyer had a standout Cricket World Cup with the willow, scoring 452 and 530 runs respectively, while Gill (354 runs) also made substantial contributions as an opener.

With the ICC Champions Trophy around the corner, India will likely field the core of this group for the event in 2025.

Gill enters the leadership group

After leading a second-string side in Zimbabwe, Gill has been named as the vice-captain in both formats for the Sri Lanka series. With several big names including KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer back in the side, Gill’s elevation shows that he has been marked out as a future leader in the white-ball setup.

On the other hand, Hardik Pandya who was the vice-captain for the side in the recently concluded T20 World Cup, has been relieved of the leadership duties. With Rohit’s retirement, Hardik could’ve been a possible captain in the T20I format, but in his stead, India have chosen Suryakumar Yadav to lead the T20I side for the Sri Lanka tour, with Gill as his deputy.

Fresh legs in the pace department

Apart from Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana (for ODIs) and Khaleel Ahmed are the other pacers in the mix. With Jasprit Bumrah being rested, and Mohammed Shami on the recovery road after his right heel surgery, India have opted to try out new faces with the goal of strengthening their pace department.

Khaleel, who last played ODIs in 2019, picked 17 wickets in the 2024 IPL and was among the reserves for the T20 World Cup before playing in Zimbabwe earlier this month.

Harshit Rana was also a part of the squad for the Zimbabwe tour but didn't play a game. Harshit had a splendid IPL with tournament winners Kolkata Knight Riders. The 22-year-old picked 19 wickets at an average of 20.15, picking big scalps throughout the season including Heinrich Klaasen, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul.

"Coolest trophy in all of sports"- Defending champion Brian Harman gushes over Claret Jug as he hands it back ahead of 2024 Open Championship

B rian Harman is at the Royal Troon Golf Club to defend his Open Championship title. As the defending champion, his first activity of the week was to return the Claret Jug, the trophy that recognizes the

"Champion Golfer of the Year."

Harman presented the trophy to Martin Slumbers, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of The R&A, the governing body that organizes the final major of the season. The defending champion expressed his appreciation for the Claret Jug and said he was "sad" to have to return it.

"In my opinion, it's the coolest trophy in all of sports," Brian Harman said (via the PGA Tour news service). "So I think it's deserving of all of the pageantry that's involved with it. A little sad to give it back, but I'll remember everywhere it's been forever. I'm happy to give it back, happy to be here. Ready to get going."

The Claret Jug is the oldest trophy in the world of golf, and one of the oldest in all sports. It has been awarded to the winner of The Open Championship since 1872, and its first winner was the legendary Young Tom Morris.

The original trophy was retired in 1928, and is currently on display at The Royal & Ancient St. Andrews Golf Club (better known as "The Home of Golf"). The replica currently in use was introduced that same year and the first to receive it was another legend, Walter Hagen.

A look at Brian Harman's performance at the 2023 Open Championship

Brian Harman began at the 2023 Open Championship with a first round of five birdies and one bogey (67) that left him tied for fourth place, just one stroke off the lead.

In the second round, the eventual champion brought his A-game, as he birdied four consecutive holes on the front nine, before making par on 12 consecutive holes, and closing with an eagle on the 18th.

This performance vaulted him to the top of the leaderboard by five strokes. Given the course and weather conditions at Royal Liverpool, the venue for the 2023 event, this lead proved to be crucial.

On the so-called "Moving Day", Brian Harman carded four birdies and two bogeys for a 69 to maintain his five-shot lead over runner-up Cameron Young .

The final round was played in a steady drizzle, but this did not prevent Harman from extending his lead to six shots. The eventual champion carded a four-birdie, three-bogey 70 in the fourth round to finish at 13-under 271.

Behind Harman, the battle was fierce. Four players finished tied for second, while seven others finished in the top ten. Among them was Tommy Fleetwood (T10), who was playing as the local player, as Royal Liverpool is his home course.

Other big names in the top 10 were Jon Rahm , Rory McIlroy, Tom Kim , and Max Homa .

Pakistan Ready To Skip 2026 World Cup If India Refuses To Travel For Champions Trophy 2025: Report

Pakistan Ready To Skip 2026 World Cup If India Refuses To Travel For Champions Trophy 2025 Pakistan Ready To Skip 2026 World Cup If India Refuses To Travel For Champions Trophy 2025: Report

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has threatened to skip participating in the 2026 World Cup in India if the BCCI does not allow the Indian cricket team to travel to Pakistan for Champions Trophy 2025, Geo News Urdu reported.

As per several media reports, the Indian government is unlikely to permit the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to send Team India to Pakistan for ICC Men's 2025 Champions Trophy, scheduled for February-March 2025. BCCI may request ICC to adopt a hybrid model for India's matches, enabling the Men in Blue to play their Champions Trophy 2025 matches at a neutral venue, most likely either Dubai or Sri Lanka, but not in Pakistan.

Also on ABP Live | Yashasvi Jaiswal, India Smash Record For Most Runs Scored Off First Ball In T20I. Here's How

However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is determined to host all Champions Trophy 2025 matches in Pakistan and plans to oppose any proposals for a hybrid model during the ICC’s annual conference in Colombo, scheduled between July 19-22.

What will happen if India decides to skip playing Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan?

If India opts out of the Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan, Sri Lanka might replace them based on ICC rankings. The tournament is scheduled to be held from 19 February to 9 March.

Champions Trophy matches will take place in Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Lahore, with all of India's matches scheduled to be held in Lahore. PCB has reportedly allocated Rs 12.80 billion for the upgrade of three stadiums: Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium, Karachi's National Bank Cricket Arena, and Rawalpindi International Cricket Stadium.

Except for India, all 8 teams participating in Champions Trophy have already played in Pakistan. PCB believes that BCCI has no concrete reason for not sending their national cricket team to Pakistan.

Team India last toured Pakistan for a bilateral series during the 2008 Asia Cup. Since then, both teams have only faced each other in ICC tournaments.

World Cup trophy starts worldwide tour in Moscow

Russia will host the 2018 World Cup this summer. AFP

Ten months before the 2018 World Cup kicks off there, the ceremony took place at Luzhniki stadium, which has been fully renovated and will also host the final and five other matches.

The event was also attended by football stars of the past -- Bebeto of Brazil and former French striker David Trezeguet.

Putin has promised that his country will complete the preparations for hosting the tournament on time.

"Everything is going according to scedule, everything is supported by the financial backing," Putin said.

Infantino said he was confident Russia would put on a tournament to remember.

"The World Cup is the most famous sports symbol, it's unique," he said.

"We will tell Russia and the entire world what a competition will take place here in 2018. I'm confident that it will be a remarkable tournament."

The FIFA boss said he was impressed with the modernisation of the Luzhniki stadium.

Moscow, Russia | AFP | The World Cup trophy tour began a worldwide tour in Moscow on Saturday at a ceremony attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin and FIFA chief Gianni Infantino.

Ten months before the 2018 World Cup kicks off there, the ceremony took place at Luzhniki stadium, which has been fully renovated and will also host the final and five other matches.

The event was also attended by football stars of the past — Bebeto of Brazil and former French striker David Trezeguet.

Putin has promised that his country will complete the preparations for hosting the tournament on time.

“Everything is going according to scedule, everything is supported by the financial backing,” Putin said.

Infantino said he was confident Russia would put on a tournament to remember.

“The World Cup is the most famous sports symbol, it’s unique,” he said.

“We will tell Russia and the entire world what a competition will take place here in 2018. I’m confident that it will be a remarkable tournament.”

The FIFA boss said he was impressed with the modernisation of the Luzhniki stadium.

“The stadium is absolutely amazing. It’s very beautiful and it has absolutely everything that a stadium of the highest class should have,” Infantino said.

Champions Trophy: Pro-terror rallies cast further shadows on Indian Team's Pak tour

On burhan wani's death anniversary, evidence of pro-terror elements on social media raises significant security concerns for the indian cricket team's tour to pakistan for the icc champions trophy 2025..

Team India going to Pakistan to play Champions Trophy? El Big Updated

 • BCCI hesitant to send team to Pakistan for ICC Champions Trophy 2025
 • Pro-terror rallies in Karachi and Islamabad commemorating Burhan Wani's death
 • Security concerns due to proximity of rallies to cricket venues

Amid reports of BCCI’s reluctance to send the Indian cricket team to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, videos have emerged of widespread pro-terror rallies in Karachi and Islamabad commemorating Burhan Wani's death anniversary. Wani, the poster boy of Hizbul Mujahideen, is part of a militant organisation designated as a terror outfit by the European Union, Canada, the United States, and India.

Coinciding with the death anniversary, a terror attack killed five Indian Army personnel on July 8 after Pakistan-sponsored terrorists ambushed an Army convoy in Badnota village in Jammu division. Support for the violence in Jammu and Kashmir extends beyond Pakistan’s ignominious intel agency to multiple pro-terror elements in various Pakistani cities.

Evidence of organised gatherings supporting Burhan Wani were found across social media platforms like Facebook, X and Instagram.

India Today’s OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) team discovered more than a thousand X(formerly Twitter) posts with hashtag #BurhanWani mostly from Pakistan-affiliated accounts. Additionally, there were a total of 843 posts containing the keyword "Shaheed Burhan” (martyr Burhan) featuring pictures and videos paying tribute to the Mujahideen leader.

Scouring through hundreds of posts, at least 20 locations of pro-terror rallies were identified in Karachi, Islamabad, Muzaffarabad, and Neelum Valley. The close proximity of some of these protest sites to the ICC Champions Trophy venues causes legitimate security concerns for the Indian cricket team.

In Karachi alone, scores of protesters can be seen shouting anti-india slogans approximately 6 km from National Cricket Stadium, one of the three proposed venues of the tournament.

Similar scenes were observed on the streets of capital city Islamabad where the Indian High Commision became the target of the anti-India gatherings. This venue is roughly 8 km from Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, another ICC Champion trophy site.

While former Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi has urged the Indian cricket team to visit Pakistan, pleading that "sports should be kept away from politics," the ongoing terror attacks and pro-terror rallies makes it unlikely. Afridi tried to make a case by floating Virat Kohli's massive fan following in Pakistan, claiming, "He will forget the love he has for India when he comes to Pakistan."

Pakistan observes the 8th of July as "Resistance Day" owing to the death anniversary of Burhan Wani. As per the reports, over 300 Kashmiri youths in Muzaffarabad, a district of PoK, were seen saluting his photo, chanting pro-freedom slogans, and pledging resistance against India.

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference Azad Jammu and Kashmir (APHC-AJK) also organized protest rallies in Islamabad, where participants marched towards the Indian High Commission holding portraits of the deceased Mujahideen leader. Many joined the protest from districts of Kotli and Neelum Valley. Pro-terror rallies were also held from Arts Council to the Karachi Press Club, as seen in X(formerly Twitter) videos.

At least five major terror attacks have been reported in Jammu in the first six months of 2024, in which over a dozen security personnel and civilians were killed. Such incidents of recurring security concerns coupled with pro-terror gatherings makes it unlikely for the BCCI to send the Indian cricket team on the tour.

Due to rising cases of cross-border terrorism in recent times, India has not played cricket in Pakistan since the 2008 Asia Cup. The Pakistan Cricket Board proposed that India play all its matches in Lahore due to its close proximity to India, but the BCCI is not keen on Team India touring Pakistan.

Earlier this year, BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla said that the Indian team would visit Pakistan for the tournament only if the Central government allowed it.

#WATCH | Delhi: On the Champion Trophy to be held in Pakistan next year, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla said, "In the case of the Champion Trophy, we will do whatever the Government of India will tell us to do. We send our team only when the Government of India gives usâ€æ pic.twitter.com/TeA3dZ5Twn — ANI (@ANI) May 6, 2024

The FIFA World Cup trophy arrived in Moscow on Sunday carried by Germany’s Lothar Mathaus, following its biggest global tour in the tournament’s history, with less than two weeks to go before the 2018 edition kicks off.

Mathaus, who helped West Germany win the tournament in 1990, unveiled the 6.1 kilogram, 18 carat solid gold trophy – which has been handed to the winner of the competition since the 1974 edition – in an event held near the Kremlin, reports Efe.

Hundreds of people, including dozens of young soccer players, gathered in the centre of Moscow to see the trophy as it arrived in the Russian capital, 11 days ahead of the opening match pitting the hosts against Saudi Arabia.

The trophy will be exhibited at Gorky Park and Pushkinskaya Square, where fans can take photos under tight security measures.

On June 7, the trophy is scheduled to arrive in Luzhniki stadium, where it will remain until the final, due to take place on July 15.

Nine months ago, the trophy started its world tour at Luzhniki in an event attended by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

From September 2017 until its arrival in the stadium, the trophy visited more than 50 countries, covering nearly 150,000 kilometres (93,206 miles).
