Last week, Björk shared details of her upcoming performance at this year’s Coachella , revealing that her set will feature a local orchestra and span her three-decade discography.

“We are so excited to bring björk orkestral to [Coachella], the singer wrote on Twitter (January 25). “We will bring on the stage a local orkestra and play arrangements from 30 years”. The announcement was accompanied by the dates Björk is due to perform at Coachella, which are slated across the festival’s two weekends on April 16 and April 23.

Spanning the singer’s 10-album catalogue, it will include songs from latest album ‘Forrossa’, which NME described as “heavier – and more hopeful – than anything before” in a  four-star review . “There’s a lot of pleasure in the album,” Björk said of ‘Forrossa’ in an  interview with  NME   last year. “It’s about enjoying that space.”

Björk’s orchestral set will mark her first appearance at Coachella since 2007 when she headlined the Californian event  alongside  Red Hot Chilli Peppers  and  Rage Against The Machine . For this year’s line-up, the singer is billed beneath  Frank Ocean , who will headline Coachella 2023 with  Bad Bunny  and  BLACKPINK .

Brant Bjork is pretty much singlehandedly credited with the formation of the stoner rock genre after the release of single “Blues for the Red Sun” with his band Kyuss in 1992. While things may have moved on somewhat with Brant performing solo these days, he is still the king of Stoner Rock and absolutely kills it during any of his performances.

A big sound like Brant Bjork’s requires a big band and a big setup to go with it. The drum lines and guitar riffs are out of this world during one of Brant’s live shows, and his lighting and stage set up are awesomely rock and roll. This guy is as much a rock star today as he was in the early nineties, and there is no way any of his fans would deny this.

Brant’s solo career has been so successful, that he has a multitude of material to select from for a gig. While he may vary the set list here and there, Brant knows that his fans are there for the music they love and he provides them with the performances they’ve been dying to see. “Automatic Fantastic”, “Too Many Chiefs... Not Enough Indians” and “Low Desert Punk” are all standout tracks during a Brant Bjork gig. You’ll remember his show for a long time, but those three tracks will really make a huge impression.

Brant Bjork played Tuesday May 9th, 2017 at The Gov, Adelaide, South Australia. Brant really feels what he plays. He occasionally looks genuinely surprised by his guitar playing! Consequently it's hard not to enjoy the groove laden rock Brant Bjork and his band throw down. Jamming reigns during this set which also featured Sean Wheeler cavorting around for 3 songs. Sean's addition wasn't necessary but he was a bit of fun onstage. I enjoy all the nuisances of a live Brant set, the relaxed vibe, fuzzy grooves, bluesy grooves, pushing his specs back on his face, lyrics delivered like commandments, everything that happens on stage seems to make the gig better.

Björk, tour review: A soul-baring spectacular

bjork tour uk

Björk’s return to the London stage for the first time in three years coincided with her Somerset House exhibition, Björk Digital, which enables fans to interact with the Icelandic singer in videos using 360-degree virtual reality headsets.

For an artist who has always embraced technology, an orchestral Royal Albert Hall performance might have seemed like a surprisingly safe comeback.

Being Björk, though, she made her musical makeover spectacular — a mesmerising evening of soul-baring songs and outlandish outfits.

Performing in a winged dress and glowing headpiece by James Merry, she revisited last year’s heart-rending Vulnicura album, which chronicled her break-up with artist Matthew Barney.

While the absence of its glitchy electronics and crunching beats took some getting used to at first, the Aurora Orchestra made her anguish majestic on Stonemilker.

History Of Touches was unbearably sad and, by the end, Björk sounded almost broken.

For all the Nordic despair, though, this was a big, bold and at times witty show from a singer whose dramatic, swooping vocal had found a perfect home at this venue beside the surging strings.

&#13; <p> </p>&#13;

The humour was more evident following the interval, when Björk appeared in an illuminated fibre-optic dress by Icelandic designer Hildur Yeoman.

Not many singers could get away with performing I’ve Seen It All, from the film Dancer In The Dark, while resembling a jellyfish drifting across a stage.

There were great roars of approval as Björk extended the orchestral collaboration to her back catalogue. As well as a magnificent Joga, Pagan Poetry combined rawness with a stirring arrangement and the lovely Anchor Song was set to shivering strings.

Encouraging the audience to dance for the finale of Pluto, Björk transformed its juddering techno into an orchestral assault led by her fearsome vocal. Even without the latest technology, Björk remains a true original.

Jad Salfiti

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

Mournful, swarming strings sounded, cueing “Stonemilker”, as Björk sauntered on stage at Berlin’s Waldbühne (German for forest theatre), an amphitheatre-style stadium engulfed by trees, for the opening of the next stop in her Orchestral tour. It’s an appropriately folkloric venue for an artist who embroiders her avant-garde music with themes of flora and fauna.

Delayed for two years, the concept behind Orchestral was an “unplugged” concert series that presented stripped-back acoustic string arrangements of the Icelandic artist’s works, alongside local collaborators. On Friday she was joined by the string section of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (under conductor Bjarni Frímann Bjarnason). “There are more locals on the stage than Icelandic people, and I would like to point that out!” Björk chirped.

Many of the songs fared remarkably well without electronic beats, especially “Hunter” and “Isobel”. In its orchestral reimagining, “Hunter” was sluggish and slurring, sliding notes rendering the song more sinister than in its original outing 25 years ago. Throughout the concert, the orchestra dextrously mimicked the glitches and microbeats (such as the sound of shuffling cards and ice cracking) in her albums by employing techniques such as pizzicato.

There were limitations to the capacity of the orchestra to replicate the sounds of Icelandic natural phenomena, such as volcanic eruptions, snowstorms and geysers, which are central to 1997’s Homogenic and 2015’s Vulnicura . Perhaps the point was not to emulate but to reimagine.

Björk’s soaring voice remained extraordinary, expressive and clear. She sang unaccompanied by back-up singers or choirs and sounded almost identical to studio recordings from decades earlier. From high belting to spoken-word whispers, her voice shifted rapidly, conveying rage, sorrow and elation, often in exaggerated, theatrical ways.

Some songs didn’t work as well without the edge that volcanic beats provide. The stuttering “I’ve Seen It All” — originally recorded as a duet with Radiohead’s Thom Yorke — was less captivating without those beats and Yorke’s accompaniment. The same can be said for the unnaturally quiet “Aurora”, whose fragility on record didn’t transfer so well to an orchestral stadium setting.

Björk is renowned for her idiosyncratic aesthetic, and on Friday she was wearing an intricate silver mask (by her co-creative director, James Merry), with orchid-like decorations. While there is something anarchic in her wearing a mask just as we can take off ours, it would have been better if her ethereal singing were accompanied by the actorly vulnerability and expressiveness she is more than capable of delivering.
