Professional Golfers Embrace The Woodlands as a Home Base: A Golf Hub Too
By Chris Baldwin , PaperCity The Woodlands
A deep golf culture percolates in The Woodlands — and it’s easy to fall in love with the benefits it provides. This master planned community is a hub of its own with a blend of nature, family and work life that George Mitchell originally envisioned some 50 years ago. It has quietly become a golf epicenter with many distinct advantages for competitive golfers from the major events The Woodlands hosts to the number of professional golfers who call the community home.
Two-time Major winner Stacy Lewis and former LPGA Tour player and college golf coach Katie Futcher represent The Woodlands in women’s golf, with both having grown up in The Woodlands. Carol Mann — the longtime pro who won two Majors and 38 LPGA titles, passing away at age 77 in 2018 — is another golf star who called The Woodlands home.
The 39-year-old Lewis credits growing up The Woodlands, an area that’s long supported girls sports on the youth and high school level (putting real resources behind them) with helping turn her into a professional golfer. Lewis played on the girls golf team at The Woodlands High School that carried a roster of 29 players. Opportunity abounds, just waiting to be grabbed.
“It’s just a great opportunity for the kids growing up here today,” says Lewis, who will be playing in The Chevron Championship at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands this week. “Just to have role models, and to have aspirations, and to have things to look up to.”
These LPGA stars are hardly the only professional golfer to embrace The Woodlands as something of the perfect home base.
On the men’s side, 2018 Masters winner Patrick Reed (who finished tied for 12th at Augusta this weekend), Champions Tour standout Jeff Maggert, Sahith Theegala, Cameron Champ, K.J. Choi, Bronson Burgoon and Jhonattan Vegas either currently live or practice in The Woodlands or at some point called The Woodlands home.
While Lewis, Futcher, Maggert, and Burgoon grew up in The Woodlands, other pro golfers just found their way here. Theegala used to visit an aunt who lived in The Woodlands area when he was a kid. Jhonattan Vegas, born and raised in Venezuela, fell in love with the practice facilities at places like Carlton Woods and the Golf Performance Center at The Woodlands, and all the international flights available out of IAH. Champ may be from California, but he went to Texas A&M and quickly embraced his life in The Woodlands. Champ frequently raves about the backyard barbecue setup he and Jessica have at their house.
With The Club at Carlton Woods’ two courses and The Woodlands Country Club’s five courses, this is an area awash in championship level courses and practice facilities. These days it’s not too hard for a pro to find a competitive game either.
For Theegala, living in The Woodlands area is something of a golf no brainer. The 15th ranked golfer in the world is a California kid, but he quickly discovered that this master planned community in Texas that’s a hub of its own brings many distinct advantages.
“It’s a pretty convenient, central location,” Theegala says of The Woodlands. “Having to get to LAX (Los Angeles International Airport) with traffic could be a 10-hour travel day. Here, I’m close to a major airport and it’s a two-hour flight to almost everywhere — direct. It’s been awesome for that. The practice facilities are really good.
“And I like the pace of life.”
With one of the LPGA’s Majors having relocated to The Woodlands starting last season, the PGA Champions Tour’s Insperity Invitational having built a 20 year tradition (it will be held April 29 through May 5 this year at The Woodlands Country Club Tournament Course), the Houston Open played each spring on the PGA Tour, in addition to the LIV Golf being played in Houston this June, this area is becoming more and more of a professional golf tournament mecca too. Theegala stayed at his own house for the Houston Open and Lewis plans to stay with her parents in the house she grew up in for The Chevron Championship this week.
“We know that with this kind of response, that this is the place we should be,” Chevron Championship tournament director Jeremy Harvey-Samuel says of the LPGA Major that made its debut in The Woodlands last spring with major community support. “And we need to be in this kind of environment for a Major championship.”
The Woodlands is a place to be. For golf, golfers and the lifestyle that George Mitchell envisioned more than five decades ago.

The event was cemented in golf history in 2006, when it was the site of golf legend Arnold Palmer's final competitive appearance. The following year it marked the first of Bernhard Langer's many senior wins, and he has won this competition a record 4 times.
Scott Dunlap is the defending champion; he claimed a single-stroke victory in the 2024 edition ahead of closest rivals Stuart Appleby and Joe Durant. New Zealand's Steven Alker, who was chasing a 3rd consecutive title here, finished 2 shots back.

Scott dunlap declared pga tour champions winner after final round washed out.
- Associated Press
THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Scott Dunlap was declared the 36-hole winner of the Insperity Invitational when rain washed the final round Sunday, giving Dunlap his first PGA Tour Champions title in nearly 10 years.
Devastating rain in the Houston area previously washed out the opening round Friday. Players managed to play 36 holes on Saturday, and Dunlap posted a 2-under 70 to take a one-shot lead over Joe Durant and Stuart Appleby.
That proved to be the winning score when rain soaked The Woodlands Country Club. It was the second 36-hole event in the last three weeks on the PGA Tour Champions because of weather. The other was in the Dallas area.
The 60-year-old Dunlap finished his 65-70 marathon with a bogey on the final hole that put him at 9-under 135.
“I think everyone knew there is a chance it could be a two rounder, but it is very dangerous to be in that mindset — ‘Oh, you are going to win,’ and then well, ‘We’re gonna play,’” he said after his round Saturday. “I did good work for the two rounds we knew were going to play.”
His only other PGA Tour Champions win was in the 2014 Boeing Classic.
Steven Alker tied for fourth and regained the lead in the Charles Schwab Cup. Bernhard Langer, playing for the first time since surgery on his left Achilles tendon three months ago, had rounds of 69-74 and tied for 31st in his return.
The PGA Tour Champions heads to Alabama for the Regions Tradition, the first of five senior majors on the schedule.

Mike Weir wins first PGA Tour Champions title at Insperity Invitational
- Associated Press
THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Former Masters champion Mike Weir won his first PGA Tour Champions event Sunday when he held steady with pars down the stretch for a 4-under 68 and let John Daly made the last mistake in the Insperity Invitational.
Weir and Daly were tied going down the stretch at The Woodlands, which was reduced to 36 holes because of heavy rain earlier in the week.
Daly, playing in the group ahead of Weir, was posing over his 9-iron over the water to the 18th green when it came up a fraction short and splashed next to the bulkhead. He made double bogey for a 69 and had to settle for runner-up.
Weir, who missed birdie chances inside 10 feet on the 16th and 17th holes, watched it all unfold and knew what he had to do. He fired his approach to about 15 feet behind the hole, and pumped his fist as he walked toward the green. He wound up winning by two shots.
"J.D. played great. It was unfortunate for him on the last," Weir said. "This means a lot. I played really well today. I'm still a little off with my putting. I made it hard on myself. But I hit the shots that I needed. It feels very good."
Because of rain that washed out the opening round Friday, the first round wasn't finished until Sunday morning and the tournament was reduced to 36 holes. That turned it into a shootout, and Daly and Weir provided most of the action.
Daly holed a 25-foot eagle putt on the par-5 13th to take a two-shot lead, and it looked as though he was on his way. In the next group, Weir hit his approach to 3 feet on the 13th for a matching eagle to tie for the lead again.
Weir fell back with a bogey on the 14th, but he caught a break when Daly missed his 3-wood into the par-5 15th and had to settle for par, and Weir made birdie to catch him again.
Daly couldn't believe he hit into the water on the final hole.
"I caught a gust on 18," he said. "I hit a 9-iron from about 155 and I hit a 9-iron from 141 there and I caught a gust and just got a bad break. But I can't hit the ball any better. I'm excited about next week."
The 50-and-over circuit plays the first of its five majors next week at the Regions Tradition.
Weir finished at 10-under 134.
Daly tied for second with David Toms and Tim Petrovic , who each closed with a 71. Bernhard Langer (69) and Bob Estes (68) tied for fifth.

Tradition of Excellence Continues at Insperity Invitational in The Woodlands through 2026
THE WOODLANDS, TX — The Insperity Invitational, presented by UnitedHealthcare, wrapped up the 19th edition of the award-winning tournament with an announcement that golf’s greatest names will continue having a positive community impact on and off the golf course in The Woodlands, Texas for another four years.
Insperity confirmed the annual Tradition of Excellence will continue in The Woodlands through its extension of the title sponsorship of the lone PGA TOUR Champions stop in the Houston area. UnitedHealthcare will also continue its long-standing commitment to the event, announcing it will support as presenting sponsor through 2026. As a result of their support, the players will contest for the largest amount of prize money in a non-major event on the PGA TOUR Champions at $2.7 million.
“This all began when I received a phone call from Mr. Arnold Palmer who encouraged me to take the step and get behind bringing this event to The Woodlands,” said Paul Sarvadi, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Insperity, who made the announcement during Thursday’s Players Dinner – originally themed “Dinner with The King” in honor of Mr. Palmer. The dinner brought together golf’s legends including Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Annika Sorenstam, Lee Trevino, among many others with the current stars on the PGA TOUR Champions.
“Our involvement with this golf tournament aligns with Insperity’s mission to help businesses succeed so that communities prosper. Bringing golf’s best to The Woodlands each year provides a tremendous economic boost for local businesses which in turn supports the charitable impact. I can’t think of a better way to honor Mr. Palmer’s life than to ensure the Tradition of Excellence continues.”
UnitedHealthcare has been the presenting sponsor of the event since 2005 and will continue this tradition of excellence for four more years.
“We are thrilled to be able to celebrate community, champions and charity alongside this wonderful community event,” said Tony Carr, National Vice President Aggregated Employer Solutions, UnitedHealthcare. “For nearly two decades the Insperity Invitational has made a positive impact in Houston area communities and we are honored to be a part of this long standing tradition.”
The Insperity Invitational, presented by United Healthcare, is managed and operated by Pro Link Sports. Since its inception in 2004, the tournament has made a significant economic and charitable impact in the Houston community with more than $18 million in donations to various local charities.
“The success of any great event starts with its corporate partners. With the leadership and commitment of Insperity and UnitedHealthcare, this tournament has been able to positively change the lives of the people in our community,” said Bryan Naugle, Executive Director, Insperity Invitational. “The generous investment of these two corporations, both financially and through the volunteer spirit of the employees, provides us with the opportunity to have a lasting charitable footprint on the region, creates networking opportunities for the corporate community, showcases junior golfers in southern Texas, and most importantly, inspires golf fans with a free opportunity to watch their heroes compete for one of the most coveted titles on the PGA TOUR Champions. We are so privileged to have them at our side to make all of this possible.”
The Insperity Invitational, presented by UnitedHealthcare, has received multiple awards for its community impact. The tournament has been recognized by many, including PGA TOUR Champions players, over the last two decades as a top event on the TOUR.
“The PGA TOUR has a long and storied history in the Houston area, and the PGA TOUR Champions will continue to build on that tradition,” said PGA TOUR Champions President Miller Brady. “This tournament is annually a player-favorite because of the outstanding fan support, the beautiful course, the outstanding conditions, as well as the warm welcome from the community. I’m confident that it will continue to be a premier event on the PGA TOUR Champions calendar well into the future.”
The tournament has delivered an impressive list of champions over the last 19 years including: major winner and defending champion, Mike Weir (2021); 11-time PGA TOUR winner, Scott McCarron (2019); four-time Insperity Invitational winner, Bernhard Langer (2018, 2014, 2008, 2007); two-time PGA TOUR major winner, John Daly (2017); Jesper Parnevik (2016); Ian Woosnam (2015); Esteban Toledo (2013); Fred Funk (2012); Brad Faxon (2011); Fred Couples (2010); John Cook (2009); Jay Haas (2006); Mark McNulty (2005) and Larry Nelson (2004).
A PGA TOUR Champions event, the Insperity Invitational presented by UnitedHealthcare features the world’s premier golfers age 50 and older. With the support of its Official Sponsors: Woodforest National Bank, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, 3M, Alfa Romeo, Pepsi, Sports Radio 610, National Car Rental, Vander Dys Fine Jewelers and Horse Soldier Bourbon Whiskey, the Insperity Invitational presented by UnitedHealthcare is managed and operated by Pro Links Sports. In 2008, the tournament received the prestigious Presidents Award as the best event on the Champions Tour, and in 2011 received the President’s Award for Excellence in Achievement. In 2012 and 2015, the tournament received The Players Award for having the “best of everything” for the players, sponsors and spectators. Fred couples returns to action on pga tour champions with six woods in his 'old man's bag', share this article.
We haven’t seen Fred Couples on the PGA Tour Champions since late March in Newport Beach, California, where he withdrew during the second round. He tried to play the next week at the Galleri Classic in Palm Springs but pulled out just hours before the action started with a lingering back issue.
Couples did play at Augusta National for the Masters in April (did you ever think he was going to miss that?) but he shot 80-76, missed the cut but vowed to return in 2025.
This week, the Seattle native is feeling good enough to play his hometown event, the Boeing Classic at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge in Snoqualmie, Washington.
Friday’s first round will be just his 10th on the season and he’s brought with him a unique mix of clubs.
“I have six woods,” he said in a PGA Tour Champions video on X. “Driver, 3-wood, 5-wood, 4-rescue, 5-rescue and a 6-rescue.”
Fred Couples has six woods in his bag this week 😅 The 64-year-old is making his first start since April @BoeingClassicWA . pic.twitter.com/e68rclDCOk — PGA TOUR Champions (@ChampionsTour) August 9, 2024
You might call that an old man’s bag but he was quick to add that he’s “loving life” with this set up.
Couples tied for 26th at the Boeing a year ago. It’s been since March of 2023 that he’s posted a top 10. He’s playing alongside Steve Flesch and David Duval in Friday’s first round. There are eight regular-season Champions tour events before the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs begin.

2024 Wyndham Championship leaderboard: Matt Kuchar holds solo lead as Round 2 action spills into Sunday
Kuchar sits atop the leaderboard as a marathon of golf awaits on sunday in north carolina.
The PGA Tour continues to play catch up at the 2024 Wyndham Championship as Round 2 action was suspended Saturday evening due to darkness. With a cut having still not been made, a handful of groups will return to the golf course early Sunday morning to complete second-round action and kick off a marathon day of golf.
When they do return to Sedgefield Country Club, Matt Kuchar will be the name occupying the top spot on the leaderboard at 12 under. Looking to maintain his perfect record of qualifying for the FedEx Cup Playoffs, the wily veteran has positioned himself to do just that thanks to a late-season surge.
Kuchar emerged from a clustered leaderboard late on Saturday surging past Cameron Young, Max Greyserman and Chad Ramey at 11 under. Billy Horschel and Aaron Rai finished up their second rounds at 10 under in the early afternoon and remain on the first page of the leaderboard ahead of Sunday's shootout alongside first-round leader Beau Hossler, who was stuck in neutral following his opening 60.
"Patience is the key," Horschel said. "We always know the winning score is always around 18, 20 under par, we know what we need to get to, you know you need to just keep giving yourself opportunities, keep putting the ball in the fairway, keep giving yourself opportunities on the greens and hopefully at some point you get on a little roll and make some birdies here and you sort of can push the gas pedal down a little bit when that happens."
Additional presences lurk on the second and third pages of the leaderboard as John Deere Classic winner Davis Thompson stands at 8 under. U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley fired a 64 to shoot into contention at 7 under and finds himself alongside Canadians Adam Hadwin and Adam Svensson.
1. Matt Kuchar (-12)
Only one man has qualified for all 17 iterations of the FedEx Cup Playoffs -- that man being Kuchar. Needing a victory in order to punch his postseason ticket for the 18th consecutive year, Kuchar finds himself in the pole position with 36 holes to play. Coming home in 5 under to grab the solo lead, Kuchar carded four straight birdies at one stage and needed to hole a combined 7 feet of putts to do so.
Other contenders
T2. Cameron Young, Max Greseryman, Chad Ramey (-11) T5. Aaron Rai, Billy Horschel, Beau Hossler (-10) T8. Justin Suh, Patrick Rodgers (-9) T10. Brendon Todd, Jacob Bridgeman, Trace Crowe, Davis Thompson, Charley Hoffman (-8)
Greyserman raced through Sedgefield Country Club on Saturday as he flirted with becoming the 15th player to shoot a sub-60 number on the PGA Tour. It was a game of runs for the Duke product as he opened his round with five straight birdies. Six straight pars set the scene for a back-nine sizzler that included circles on the scorecard from Nos. 12-15. Another arrived on the par-4 17th to give him a chance on the difficult closing hole to shoot 59. While he found the surface in regulation, Greyserman settled for par, a round of 60 and a share of the overnight lead.
Notables to miss the cut
While everyone in the field technically played the weekend in the regular-season finale, not all will be around for the second half of the tournament. Defending champion Lucas Glover enjoyed a highlight in the form of his sixth hole-in-one on the PGA Tour, but that's as good as it got. With his early exit, Glover will miss out on defending his title at the St. Jude Championship as he will not qualify for the postseason. Others are not in as dire of a position, but a good start in Greensboro, North Carolina, would have gone a long way towards their postseasons. Those players include Jordan Spieth, Min Woo Lee, Justin Rose and Will Zalatoris, who find themselves on the top 50 bubble in the FedEx Cup.
2024 Wyndham Championship updated odds, picks
- Matt Kuchar: 4-1
- Cameron Young: 4-1
- Billy Horschel: 7-1
- Aaron Rai: 7-1
- Max Greyserman: 8-1
- Chad Ramey: 14-1
- Beau Hossler: 16-1
Horschel is still the name of most interest. Following up a 62 with a solid 68, he proved he can navigate the par 70 even without his best stuff. As an added bonus, Horschel should be well-rested for Sunday's marathon having finished his second round in the early afternoon on Saturday while many of the other contenders were out on the golf course late.

Greyserman shoots 60
For the second straight day, a 60 has been shot at Sedgefield CC. Max Greyserman is the man to do it today and he now stands in a tie for the lead at 11 under. The Duke product has finished no worse than T31 since the U.S. Open and looks to make a massive leap in the FedEx Cup with another high quality outing having finished runner-up his last time out at the 3M Open.
Cut sweat time
The cutline is materializing at 4 under where Jordan Spieth currently stands after a par on the par-5 15th. On that same hole, his playing partner, Justin Rose, landed the eagle to get to 3 under and give himself a chance to see the second half of this tournament with three to play.
Hossler leaking oil
After grabbing the lead to himself, Beau Hossler has now dropped shots on two straight holes. From alone atop the leaderboard to one behind Chad Ramey, he will aim to get back on the birdie train on the more accessible front nine at Sedgefield Country Club with eight holes to play.
About two hours of play remaining
They went until roughly 8:10 p.m. ET yesterday, so it will be interesting if the leader, Beau Hossler, can finish this second round. He is currently on his ninth hole after a birdie on the par-4 17th to reach 12 under. He would love nothing more than to finish this round instead of coming back early tomorrow and then waiting for his third-round tee time.
Hossler regains share of the lead
While he hasn't been as sharp as yesterday, Beau Hossler adds a birdie on the par-5 15th to get into red figures on the day and into a share of the lead at 11 under. Playing on the more difficult back nine, Hossler now has a chance to start running downhill and potentially build on his lead.
Here comes Cameron Young
After a bogey-free 67 on Friday, Cameron Young has been shot out of a cannon on Saturday. He just played his first seven holes in 5 under to get within three of the leader, Chad Ramey. He's hit every fairway thus far and is making some nice putts from distance.
Hossler having a tough time
As easy as Day 1 was for Beau Hossler, his second round as been as difficult. It is still very early as he is through just three holes, but he has yet to connect on a fairway and has hit just one green in regulation. If he can right this ship over the next few holes and find his ball striking that could be large to remaining among the leaders.
Brendon Todd tacking on birdies
A bubble boy to begin the week, Brendon Todd has performed well through the first two days of this tournament. Following a 64 on Friday, he has added two more birdies to his scorecard to position himself inside the top 10. This current standing would be enough to punch his ticket into the postseason.

Pro golf week ahead: PGA Tour concludes regular season with Wyndham Championship in Greensboro
Top 70 players on fedex cup points list after this week will advance to playoffs at fedex st. jude championship near memphis.
There’s no more margin for error on the PGA Tour and the Korn Ferry Tour to make the postseason.
Both Tours will wrap up their playoff fields in the next two weeks, the PGA Tour concluding the regular-season FedEx Cup season beginning on Thursday with the Wyndham Championship at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.; and Korn Ferry Tour players have only two more shots at moving on, this week’s Pinnacle Bank Championship in Omaha, Neb., and next week’s Magnit Championship in Jackson Township, N.J.
The top-70 on the FedEx Cup points list will advance to the FedEx St. Jude Championship Aug. 15-18 at TPC Southwind near Memphis. The top-156 players on the Korn Ferry points list after the Jersey event will make the first round of the Korn Ferry Finals Aug. 22-25 at the Albertson’s Boise Open.
How do the PGA Tour, Korn Ferry Tour playoff systems work?
The PGA Tour pares the FedEx playoffs field to the top-50 after St. Jude to play at the BMW Championship the following week at Castle Rock, Colo. The top-30 after that make the Tour Championship in Atlanta Aug. 29-Sept. 1.
The Korn Ferry cutoff at Boise will be the top 144 for the Simmons Bank Open Sept. 12-15 in Franklin, Tenn., the top 120 for the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship Sept. 19-22 in Columbus, Ohio and the top 75 for the Korn Ferry Championship Oct. 3-6 in French Lick, Ind.
Who’s in danger of missing the FedEx Cup playoffs?
One of the biggest names on the outside of the top 70 entering the week is defending Wyndham champion Lucas Glover, who is 76 th on the points list, 17 points behind Victor Perez on the bubble (Perez is 71 st but another spot will be added to replace the late Grayson Murray, who is still 57 th on the points list).
A reminder about Glover, the 2009 U.S. Open champion: He went on a hot streak last year beginning with his victory at Sedgefield. He the won at Southwind the following week and finished fifth in the final FedEx Cup standings.
But he's struggling right now. Glover doesn't have a top 10 finish this season (he had three in four starts prior to Greensboro last season) and has missed four of his last six cuts.
Other past PGA Tour winners with work to do this week are Kurt Kitiyama (No. 74), Luke List (No. 75), Keith Mitchell (No. 79) and Matt Kuchar (No. 111). Kuchar has the longest active streak of making the PGA Tour's postseason at 17 years in a row — the only player to have reached the FedEx Cup Playoffs every year since it began in 2007.
What’s going on with LIV Golf?
The LIV Golf League is inactive this week but its tournament Aug. 16-18 at the Greenbrier Old White Course in West Virginia should continue a showdown between the top two teams, Bryson DeChambeau’s Crushers and Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII.
Rahm’s team is 15.5 points behind DeChambeau’s with the Greenbrier and LIV Chicago Sept. 13-15 remaining before the LIV Team Championship Sept. 21-22 near Dallas. The Rippers (captained by Cameron Smith of Ponte Vedra Beach) and Torque (captained by individual points leader Joaquin Niemann) are within mathematical striking distance of the Crushers.
Niemann has a 14.23-point lead in the individual standings over Rahm, who won his first LIV event three weeks ago and has finished among the top 10 in all 10 starts this season.
